De, Leo Rocco. "Spazio vissuto e spazio rappresentato". Doctoral thesis, Universita degli studi di Salerno, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10556/1858.
Texto completoAutobiography is a highly problematic genre whose main features are commonly considered memory, experience and identity. Nonetheless, there is also an inevitably degree of fiction-making concerned with the autobiographical act, as most autobiographies are inspired by a creative, and therefore fictional, impulse to select only those events and experiences in the writer’s life that build up an integrated pattern. As such, this encourages questions about fact and fiction, about the relations between reality and the text, and about origins: in this sense, there is a necessary link between the conditions – political, economic, and social – in which writers find themselves and the kinds of stories they choose to tell. The space they inhabit and the accrued meanings of space and time play a constitutive role in their narratives; but space is not given: it is culturally constructed or produced, it incorporates temporal change. The progresses in technology, the new media and migrations have finally led to «time-space compression», and to the concept of nonplaces, where the individual is out-of-the-world. In this sense, Canada perfectly represents what it means to live in a «third space» of in-betweenness: so, we will see how German-Canadian writer Frederick Philip Grove avoids categorization of literary nationalism locating himself in an isolated and paradigmatic position between literatures; we will appreciate Mordecai Richler, whose irony is crucial in order to describe the moments and spaces given to a Canadian Jew in Montreal’s ghetto; finally, we will look at Michael Ondatjee’s continuous references to the cultural and political situation in Sri Lanka, and how he uses these connections to build a sort of third-person autobiography through which he can recover the memory of the places from his Ceylonese childhood. At the end of this analysis, it will be clear how many difficulties the autobiographical impulse has to face, how many parameters it has to respect, and how much truth and fiction influence and corrupt each other. Texto completoArchitecture and music. Space and time. Sound. Experience. These are the key words on which my research is based. It all started from the intuition of the existence of a link between two disciplines to which I have devoted much time and study, along two parallel academics paths: the school of architecture and the conservatory. After a long process of identification and analysis of the infinite possible approaches to the topic, I chose to focus on one of the most emblematic example of collaboration between an architect and a musician of the twentieth century: "Prometeo, tragedia dell'ascolto” (1984), composed by Luigi Nono in collaboration with Massimo Cacciari and Renzo Piano. Through the study of Prometeo, I was able to deal with many possible interpretations of the interdisciplinary relationship between music and architecture. The research was mainly carried out by analysing the writings of Nono and by studying the documents stored at Archivio Luigi Nono and Fondazione Renzo Piano. The dissertation consists of three parts: the first part deals with the role of space in Nono's works preceding the Prometeo, highlighting the importance of cultural and sound environment in Venice; the second part explores the composition process that led to the set-up Prometeo in Venice, Milan and Paris; the third part deepens what happened after Prometeo, and reflects on the contributions that this experience can give to the design of spaces for music, analysing different setups of the play without the ark, and studying the projects of Akiyoshidai's International Art Village and the concert hall of the new Philharmonie in Paris. The study of the experience of Prometeo aims to encourage the curiosity to research, and the experimentation of those 'infiniti possibili' of the architectural and musical composition mentioned by Nono.

Texto completoMy doctoral thesis is dedicated to the study of spaces and places in the work of the German poet Durs Grünbein. The first chapter deals with an excursus on the space studies, beginning with some of the traditional authors of the 20th century, to arrive to its latest theorists, which constitutes a useful methodological ground for the development of my analysis. This section ends with the attempt to apply the space studies, in particular the so-called spatial turn, to the literary studies. Afterwards my dissertation is carried out through a thematic criterion: the second chapter consists of an analysis of Grünbein’s work according to the categories outlined in the first part (heterotopias, non-places, places of memory), while the third chapter focuses on some peculiarly grünbeinian poetics of space, such as that of the border, like in the long poem dedicated to the philosopher Descartes. The fourth and last chapter deals with the “water topic”: after shading light on Grünbein’s continuity with the theorization of water as a place I have investigated its poetic and poetological worth, as well as its proximity to the myth (Atlantis) and through it to the recent «German-German history».

Texto completoThis research focuses on the study of common spaces conceived after the European events of 1989: those public places of common interest (shopping malls, cultural centres, multiplexes), now more than ever before important elements in the urban project. The new common spaces in Europe, multithematic projects of the hypertext city integrate pure trade with public life, raising the question of the concept of public space according to European tradition. The progress in structural and installation technique (intelligent building) that has turned the construction into a controlled, enclosed space, has brought into discussion the privatisation and interiorisation of the public space. The comparison between urban and architectural multithematic projects in Europe-public spaces conceived or built in Rome, Paris and Berlin-will contribute to the notion of public spaces. That will give rise to reflections on the influence of the European city on the character of the public space in the future

Texto completoThis work wants to reflect on the importance given to the concept of space within the formation of political identity among marginal groups living in the city. The case study is a small “floating community” called Harbor located in the city center of Copenhagen. The research is based on a year-long fieldwork conducted in the Danish capital from June 2016 to June 2017. The main aim of this work is to analyze the practices of space creation within the tension between urban planning and citizen autonomous dwelling the urban space. Drawing upon the latest theoretical frameworks in urban anthropology and urban studies this work will look into Harbor settler’s capacity to use spatial resources and spatial practices for identity and political affirmations. We consider space as a language used by Harbor’s settlers to communicate with institutions, when performing political actions. In this regard we use the emic concept of “Take up space” to indicate those practices in which space is used as a language to communicate the instances and identities of marginal groups living in urban environments. Focusing on the importance of space analysis, we argue that our ethnographic case would enrich the discussion within the theoretical framework of urban studies in anthropology.

Texto completoThis research project analyses the relationship between homeless people and public space, with particular attention given to the most recent strategies of urban policy aimed at regulating public space. The study is divided into two sections. The first section outlines the overall picture that emerges at an international level, highlighting three central dimensions: 1) the essential role of public space in the everyday life of the homeless; 2)the changes that take place in public space following urban renewal processes; and 3)the increasing control of public space leading to the exclusion of homeless people. Then using a funnel approach, the second section focuses on two European urban realities, Bologna and Amsterdam. The research is based on qualitative methods, namely in-depht interviews, direct observation of public space and the typical techniques of visual sociology, creating and using images as visual indicators of the ongoing processes, together with the analysis of both social and urban policies. The study identifies those urban spaces meaningful for the homeless, tracing their use of public space and its features, and the ways in which the city attempts to deal with the visibility of such population, which, especially in renovated city centres, poses problems of order, decorum and reorganisation of urban furniture. While realising the contingent and conditional character of control processes, the research reveals that in reality spaces of exclusion are being created within urban space which often correspond to exactly those spaces vital to the homeless. In conclusion, the analysis reflects on the image of a "showcase city" which underlies those processes; a city evidently not for the use of all but only for the use of some, relying as it does on exclusion.

Texto completoSUBJECT The city, as an artifact, as “the human invention par excellence” (Lévi-Strauss), is the background upon which this research wants to focus, in the foreground, on a specific instrument for its transformation: the demolition. The history of the evolution of the city (of any city) is the history of the conflict between the inertia of the city as the place of consolidated meanings and the will of the humans to transform it into the place of new possible meanings. This research is about projects of demolitions: architectural projects for the positive solution of that conflict within the city. PURPOSE The research wants to show how, moving the attention from what is demolished to what is not, it is possible to see demolition as a constructive instrument to preserve the city as a whole. This perspective is at the same time more pertinent and more promising for the city. Therefore, demolition could stand out as a useful tool to transform contemporary cities. METODOLOGY The first part of the thesis focuses on the distinguishing features of the demolition, emerging from the analysis of Paris transformation, dreamed and laboriously realized between 1789 and 1889. In particular, attention is focused on the space of the demolitions: the space where conflict between political, social and economical forces took place; the space used to build the modern/bourgeoise city starting from a medieval/feudal city. The cases analyzed in the second part of the thesis (from Sixtus V’s Rome to Bohigas’ Barcelona) show how demolitions have been used in order to transform the existing cities into other cities. On the one hand, demolition is revealed as the trigger that makes the relations between artifacts (monuments, buildings or cities) and their own consolidated meaning explode; on the other hand, the design of the space of the demolitions is revealed as the instrument to project their new meaning. CONCLUSIONS The space of demolitions has a negative form, since it is the result of a subtraction of volume. As negative, that space has a close relationship with the positive form lying inside it (the parts of the new city) and outside it (the surviving parts). The space of demolition is opened inside the old city to make room to the new city. The relationship between the two cities is defined through its design. For this reason, demolitions are acts of architecture; for this reason, from the point of view of the city, demolitions are positive acts. If “architecture is the will of the epoch translated into space” (Mies), demolition is a tool to open that space in the city.

C.A. Hunter.

Texto completoThis thesis is developed under three empirical essays, investigating the linkage between space and poverty in the urban industrialized Milan. The first essay, accepting the unifying conceptual framework for the analysis of such linkage issued by Chiappero-Martinetti, Moroni and Nuvolati (forthcoming), suggests a system of 27 indicators related to 3 key dimensions of wellbeing (physical, economic and social ), tests its robustness and provides the indication of a poverty profile for each of the former 20 areas of decentralization. The second essay considers only the economic dimension, extending the investigation to the 180 “aree funzionali”. From this analysis we find that, from 2000 to 2006, the average per capita income per equivalent components is significantly autocorrelated, according to various concentration schemes (typical spatial clusters, atypical spatial outliers). The third essay considers the three dimensions mentioned in the first contribution but related to the 180 “aree funzionali”. In opposition to that theory-driven, this data-driven approach allows to specify the relationship between the variables and sub-dimensions of wellbeing, to identify six distinct cluster groups on the basis of the synthetic measures obtained and to suggest a policy profile combining people and area-based interventions.

This research analyzes the operating modes through which the language of comics can afford a better understanding and a more effective representation of the built space. Comics therefore understood as cognitive, planning and communication tool. Issues are examinated that, through the history of representation and conception of space, form the context in which words and images (narrative and space) weave a synergy that finds expression in the comic: the evolution of the perception in the urban context the nineteenth and twentieth century, the mechanization of movement and the changing of the perception of urban space. They are then analyzed some elements of the built space with respect to which the language of comics articulates specific visual strategies (the plant, window, front view, the section and the scale). The look of a confined space that communicates with the surroundings through complex openings (for example the window) leads to the discovery of representative strategies linked to an urban space as a whole. The research explores, through the comparison of narrative moments related to the city in its overall size (urban scale with a historical study that highlights the elective relationship between comics and cities. They are then explored, along the lines of a series of movements within the city, issues such as recognition, orientation, crossing and “uncanny” architecture. Help and unifying element of this path is the gaze (the camera position, if we want to use a cinematic metaphor) of a hypothetical observer who moves from inside a building to the city (and beyond) . An observer who explores space drawing a synthesis and a reading of the city which seem precious and articulate and that it is capable, through the “mise en page” proper of the comic, to manage the gap between the detail and the whole urban space.
Tognon, Alessandro <1970>. "Rudolf Schwarz. La costruzione dello spazio sacro". Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2019. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/8857/1/tognon_alessandro_tesi.pdf.
Texto completoThe purpose of this research is to bring out the project range architect Rudolf Schwarz has developed from the end of the XIX century to 1961, while defining his own design theory about liturgical sacred space. He is a man of broad vision, his thought is the emblem of a man living the space of reality, which discreetly pushes himself to the intelligible boundaries. The selected Schwarz’s sixty churches, projects and buildings, can be classified in different “architectural types” : “Basilica” type; “Cruciform” type and “Hall” type. It is necessary to specify that this approach considers the several and complex modification and influences that are present in each project too. With these types that Schwarz names “prototypes”, as formal simplifications that need a typological choice while they are implemented, starting from the 20s, Rudolf Schwarz lays the groundwork for a general modern spatial and collective idea of the liturgical Christian rite celebration. Purpose of the research is understanding how much the architecture and the sacred, the project and the liturgy coincide from an ideological and a formal point of view. Understanding how much the architecture, that is permeated by historically inherited shapes, is independent form the liturgical rite and how much at the same time it can suggest new liturgical possibilities, in a period when modernism and constant improvement of building technologies ensures new construction possibilities but also takes the risk of loss of values of the architectural space and of the relation between the meaning of architecture and its building.
