Resumen
The amount of information currently available about the genomes of many livestock species, especially cattle and pigs, has increased dramatically in the past few years and the rate of its accumulation will continue to increase. A large number of scientific ‘tools’ is currently available for research aimed at understanding biological processes important to livestock production. These resources are being used to understand biological processes regulating reproduction, body composition and immune function in all livestock species. This research will create many opportunities to develop new tools for the improvement of livestock production. The best commercial application of genomics is in conjunction with reproductive enhancing technologies, such as artificial insemination, embryo transfer and cloning.

Resumen
Fescue toxicosis is a multifaceted syndrome that elicits many negative effects on livestock consuming ergot alkaloids produced by endophyte-infected tall fescue. The economic losses associated with fescue toxicosis are primarily due to reproductive failure including altered cyclicity, suppressed hormone secretion, reduced pregnancy rates, agalactia, and reduced offspring birth weights. For decades, a multitude of research has investigated the physiological and cellular mechanisms of these reproductive failures associated with fescue toxicosis. This review will summarize the various effects of ergot alkaloids on female reproduction in grazing livestock species.

Resumen
Nowadays, a modern trend of the animal husbandry is to increase the reproductive potential of livestock and poultry. There is a large interest worldwide in discovering new and safe non-hormonal biologically active substances obtained from natural sources, which could substitute the synthetic hormones. The positive influence on reproduction in livestock of the biologically active substances of natural origin such as isoflavones, carotenoids, minerals, phytohormones, PUFAs, etc. represent a potential alternative. These substances are derived from various plant sources and micro and macro algae as well. In addition, those substances could provoke positive changes in animal reproduction practices, corresponding to the modern EU requirements for quality and safe for the human health nutrients. The present mini-review summarizes the known in respect of the trend of substitution of the hormonal ones and outlines the potential non-hormonal additives in livestock husbandry.

Resumen
In vitro technology is one of the most dynamically developing and more and more stable biotechnological methods today accelerating selection, intensifying reproductive and genetic potential of breeding animals, allowing to increase breeding young animals production by one champion cow up to 5–10 calves per year, reduce generation interval and significantly accelerate process of updating and qualitative improvement of livestock. However, obtaining oocytes competent for in vitro development is one of the critical factors determining success of the method and depending on a number of biological and technical factors. This paper presents results of studies on effect of biological factors of direct and indirect impact on efficiency of obtaining oocytes in the system of transvaginal aspiration for the first time conducted in the Republic of Belarus. Yield of excellent and good quality oocytes increased during aspiration during the luteal phase of estrous cycle and remained almost unchanged during aspiration into the follicular phase. Presence of follicles with diameter over 8 mm in the ovaries during aspiration reduced yield of excellent and good quality oocytes averagely by 9.4 percentage points. Removing the dominant follicle 72 hours prior to aspiration allowed increasing the number of aspirated follicles by 41 %, and yield of oocytes – by 22.9 %. Microstimulation of ovaries prior to aspiration by follicle-stimulating hormones FSG-super and Plusset increased efficiency of aspiration in terms of the main indicators by 19.2–45.9 %. Follicular cyst or persistent corpus luteum in one of the ovaries reduced both quantitative and qualitative indicators of aspiration. The data obtained are of practical importance for development of technology for in vitro embryo production in the system of transvaginal aspiration of oocytes which will help to accelerate breeding process and increase efficiency of breeding work in livestock production in general.Acknowledgments. Resumen
AbstractAssisted reproduction is used to resolve infertility problems in human and in breeding programs to generate livestock. Except for gestation length and birth weight, perinatal outcome of children conceived by In Vitro Fertilization is similar to that of spontaneously conceived children. However, large offspring syndrome observed after In Vitro Production in livestock is quite alarming. The distinct parts of assisted reproduction (oocyte maturation, fertilization and culture) have been found to contribute to abnormal fetal growth and development. Genomic imprinting is suggested to be involved in the induction of the aberrant phenotypes observed after assisted reproduction. Furthermore, current knowledge on postnatal health of offspring conceived by assisted reproduction and speculations on potential longterm effects of In Vitro Fertilization will be described.

Resumen
[Truncated abstract] The activity of the reproductive endocrine axis is the result of interactions among many organs and tissues, particularly the hypothalamus, pituitary gland and gonad. However, it depends on more than the communication between anatomical structures because it is also affected by genotype, internal factors (e.g., metabolic inputs) and external factors (e.g., photoperiod, socio-sexual cues, stress, nutrition). This multifactorial complexity makes it difficult to use animal experimentation to investigate the pathways and mechanisms involved. Therefore, in this study, I have turned to mathematical modelling. The general hypothesis was that, by modelling the hormonal feedback loop that links the hypothalamus, pituitary gland and gonad, I would be able to discover the critical control points in this homeostatic system. This would allow me to inform and direct research into the processes that control reproduction, including inputs from environmental factors. My studies began with the development of a model of the negative feedback loop through which testosterone controls the secretion of pulses of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) by the hypothalamus. The model incorporated two critical factors: testosterone concentration and a time delay in the inhibition of the activity of the GnRH 'pulse generator' by testosterone. The general assumptions were: i) there are two positive feedforward processes (GnRH pulses stimulate LH pulses, and, in turn, LH pulses stimulate testosterone secretion); ii) testosterone exerts negative feedback that reduces the frequency of GnRH pulses. The model incorporated a group of equations that represent the GnRH pulse generator, through which the inhibitory effect of testosterone acted to reduce GnRH pulse frequency. Simulations were run with various values for the time delay in feedback and, as model development progressed, the simulations were extended to include combinations of time delays and levels of sensitivity of the GnRH pulse generator to inhibition by testosterone. The output of the simulations showed clearly that a time delay in negative feedback, as well as the concentration of testosterone, can greatly affect the frequency of GnRH pulses and the shape of the GnRH secretory profile. Importantly, the effect of the time delay depends on the sensitivity of the pulse generator to testosterone. In addition, the simulations suggested two additional components that might be involved in the control of the GnRH pulse generator: i) a delay in the rate of adaptation to a change in steroid feedback; and ii) a minimum pulse interval (maximum frequency). These studies iii therefore suggest that the regulation of the activity of the GnRH pulse generator, and thus the frequency and profile of GnRH and LH pulses, requires interactions among these four components. These interactions should be tested in animal experimentation. In the next stage, I extended the model so I could test whether the feedback delay might involve the process of aromatization in which testosterone is converted to oestradiol at brain level. ... This information can be used to direct future experimental studies that will help us to understand the factors that underlie the dynamic behaviour of the hypothalamic and pituitary systems that control reproduction.

In the present study were obtained, in a population of Nellore cattle, estimates of genetic parameters for the characteristics probability of calving up to 39 months at age (PC39), stayability, considering three calving until 5.2 (STAY5,2) and trhee calving until 6.2 years old (STAY6,2), and the first four calving interval (CI1, CI2, CI3 and CI4), treated as categorical traits, and scrotal perimeter at weaning (EPD) and at 18 months of age (EPS), treated as continuos trait. Were used Baeysian procedures, in single and two trait analysis, by using THRGIBBS1F90 and GIBBS2F90 programs. Information from Nellore animals belonging to the Geneplus-Embrapa program was used. The heritabilities for PC39, STAY3,1, STAY3,2, EPD and EPS in single trait analysis were 0.14, 0.20, 0.23, 0.28 and 0.36, respectively. For the calving interval estimates heritabilities for CI1, CI2, CI3 and CI4 were 0.13, 0.13, 0.12 and 0.017, respectively. These values indicate that genetic gains by direct selection in any of the intervals would be very small. In the two trait analysis the heritabilities for PC39 and EPS were 0.15 and 0.38, respectively. The low values of estimates showed that small gains would be obtained by direct selection in any of traits measured in females. EPD and EPS had higher heritabilities. The correlation between EPS and PC39 was positive with low magnitude (0.25), suggesting that the selection for the increase of EPS of sires could possibly lead to small changes in the PC39. In general, estimates of heritability for traits measured in dams were low and for traits measured in males were moderate to low. This result is likely those reported in most studies with the same traits. However, the threshold model was able to detect additive genetic variance for the traits under study and can permit to promote gains, albeit small, by direct selection.

Sorensen, George Edwin Peter. "Host-virus interactions in porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus infection". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/10040.

Resumen
Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is a rapidly evolving virus that has significant economic and welfare implications for the pig industry. Vaccination strategies have proved largely ineffective in controlling PRRSV, in some cases even reverting to virulence. An increasing body of evidence suggests a host genetic basis for PRRSV resistance so there is a need to examine the role of host genetics in a biologically relevant in vitro cell culture system. However, PRRSV research is inhibited by the current scarcity of suitable in vitro culture systems. With the aim of developing a convenient in vitro model, porcine bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDM) were evaluated as a PRRSV cell culture system. BMDM were found to be highly permissive to Type I PRRSV and amenable to genetic manipulation. BMDM proved to be excellent cells for virus production, producing significantly higher titres of PRRSV than commonly used alternative cell types. Surprisingly, PRRSV entry into BMDM was found to be independent of both the prototypic PRRSV receptors, CD163 and CD169, providing further evidence for the existence of alternate PRRSV entry mechanisms in primary cell types. To explore the genetics of pig susceptibility to PRRSV, network-based analysis of host transcriptional datasets, following PRRSV challenge, revealed important differences in co-regulated gene pathways between samples from pigs with different PRRSV-permissiveness. These pathways included genes with important, recently characterised, anti-pathogen activities. The incorporation of network-based transcriptional analysis and published genetic variation data led to the identification of a member of the guanlyate binding protein family, GBP-1, as a candidate host gene involved in controlling PRRSV replication. Overexpression of GBP-1 in BMDM revealed a significant anti-PRRSV function for this protein. Further investigation of published genetic variation in GBP-1 suggested a potential role of this gene in PRRSV tolerance. The results presented in this thesis provide evidence for an alternate PRRSV entry pathway in a biologically relevant cell type. The discovery of a highly PRRSV-infectable cell type with potential for genetic manipulation adds a useful new tool to the area of PRRSV research. The identification of GBP-1 as a novel anti-viral protein with a significant inhibitory effect on PRRSV infection, together with genetic variation in this gene, prompts further research into the genetic basis for PRRSV resistance.

In this paper, we will present the development of the prototype of the mobile application EQUIVAPP, which seeks to connect people working in the livestock and equine industry, thus facilitating communication with a portfolio of customers and specialized services in the sector, providing a high level of confidence by offering a variety of products valued and rated by the same users. In other words, to position ourselves within the customers as an application that helps them save time and losses by having a large number of potential partners with ratings that will ensure a premium quality of the services required. Likewise, all the services they want to access in the areas of reproduction, transport, sale of balanced or special feed and veterinary services will be present in the application. The development of this project is focused on putting an end to the high level of losses registered within the sector, since most of the contacts that many of the companies have are obtained through recommendations from neighbors or neighboring workers. Likewise, the implementation of technology in a rural sector is not a big problem, since most of the families dedicated to this sector have new generations that are up to date with the use of cell phones, computers, laptops and other technological devices.

Resumen
Abstract Science can help us understand what animals want and economics can provide the understanding of human motivation needed to deliver such wants. In our view, what needs further development in future is for economics and information/communication science and technology to channel awareness into appropriate action. This chapter elaborates on this idea by providing some illustrative examples. Focusing on animal health and welfare, it argues that there is much scope for improvement in profit and welfare on commercial farms simply by adopting the best disease management approach available. We also emphasize the importance of systems modelling and operations research (OR) in the future to ensure that animal welfare taps into the growing opportunities that developments in these methods are likely to bring. The chapter also argues that OR can provide a bridge between animal welfare science, economics and business to deliver improvements in animal welfare through food markets. The importance of big data and precision livestock farming in livestock production/reproduction, animal health and welfare, and the environmental impact of livestock production are also discussed. New genetic approaches to optimize livestock resilience and efficiency are highlighted. We argue that tackling difficult problems, such as sustainability (that encompasses animal welfare alongside environment and climate change), efficiency and resilience in farm animal production systems, is and will remain a vital focus of research in the agri-food sector. Research methods and governance still need to change to properly reflect this. It is envisaged that animal welfare will be affected by these developments and should, wherever appropriate, be explicitly considered.

Resumen
The Ayrshire dairy breed is renowned for producing large quantities of high quality milk and, therefore, is frequently used for crossbreeding. However, various hereditary anomalies caused by gene mutations have been recently recorded in calves produced by some Ayrshire sires. Most of these anomalies were shown to have a recessive inheritance pattern, thus imposing a threat of unpredictable dramatic changes in cattle genotypes under such factors as genetic drift, selection and inbreeding. The purpose of this study was to examine the susceptibility of the Ayrshire cattle bred in the North Caucasus to such hereditary abnormalities as complex vertebral malformation (CVM) and bovine leukocyte adhesion deficiency (BLAD). The investigation was carried out on 16 cows with various phenotype and reproduction disorders that were selected based on a three-year veterinary observation of 440 livestock animals. The target group cows were generally the descendants of Hannulan Yaskiyri, Riihiviidan Urho Errant and O.R. Lihting. The results demonstrated that no animals under study were the carriers of these genetic disorders, which proved the mutant alleles of BLAD and CVM to be absent from the Ayrshire cattle livestock bred in the North Caucasus. Therefore, the sires of these cattle can be successfully used for breeding.
