Bocoum, Sadou. "Le tourisme littoral en Basse Casamance (Sénégal) entre perceptions et réalités : diagnostics, contraintes, potentialités". Electronic Thesis or Diss., Orléans, 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024ORLE1029.
Texto completoTourism in Basse-Casamance is based on a diversity of natural and cultural potential. Despite these strengths, this sector which depends mainly on the coast faces various constraints that undermine its development. Therefore, the objective of this thesis is to understand the constraints of coastal tourism in Basse Casamance and participate in improving its management with associated risks, by defining well-identified priorities, and to contribute to the rational development of its tourist territories. It aims first to make a diagnosis of the tourist potential of the Lower Casamance and then to analyze land pressures and conflicts of use on the coast before ending up with tourist constraints related to coastal erosion in the municipalities of Diemer and Kafountine. Finally, it presents the adaptation strategies implemented and the expectations of the actors before concluding with recommendations. This thesis, beyond the cartographic and statistical approach that allowed to calculate the rates of variation of the slope line, to analyze the dynamics of land use, to understand the importance of infrastructure supply, is based on a quantitative and qualitative approach (through questionnaires, interview guides, focus-groups and observation) which has partly allowed to analyse the perception of the population, tourism actors and tourists. The results indicate a strong land pressure on the coastline. In 43 years (1979-2022), we see an urbanization that reached 802.77 ha in the municipality of Diembéring and 678.05 ha in that of Kafountine. It contributes to the increase in conflicts of use and coastal erosion. As a result, the results show that the concentration of activities and population accompanied by a development problem (according to 76% of hoteliers) leads to the emergence of unsanitary conditions (according to 72% of tourists and 77% of hoteliers), congestion on the coast, the proliferation of fumes and foul odours on the beach. Similarly, the results show that coastal erosion has become a serious threat with the pronounced degradation between 1979-2022 of the beach (of -511.926 ha in the commune of Diembéring against -333.082 ha in that of Kafountine), of the coastal vegetation (respectively of -670,76 ha against -3200,13 ha) and above all the hotel infrastructures (with 14% and 15% are within 50 meters of the line of coast). In the face of these constraints, adaptation strategies are put in place, but despite this, some phenomena such as land pressure, unsanitary conditions and coastal erosion continue to be major problems. Which makes the actors think they are ineffective. In addition, the actors try to diversify the tourist offer by valuing natural and cultural heritage that remains underexploited and unknown. Thus, this thesis proposes recommendations for the sustainable management of the coastline and the development of sustainable tourism through a regulatory zoning of the development of heritage with the establishment of circuits and the involvement of all actors in the initiatives. The goal is to better allocate financial resources, diversify supply and attract more visitors to the region

Texto completoAs in many Northern countries, the elderly population in France represents an important increasing part of the population. Generally there are more elderly women than men, and this number increases, as the elderly women get even older. The feminisation of the elderly population raises important issues. It leads one to reflect on the position provided to older women in our society. The goal of this thesis is to look at the specific practices of elderly women on seaside promenade. This spaces are chosen to question citadinité. Examining the relationship between the community and the behaviors of these women, regarding their required space, their anchor and their sociability, the citadinité assess the inclusion of the elderly persons in the society. It helps, especially, to see how the process of aging works in these dynamics of inclusion.Strolls on waterfronts allows the use of space with others, one’s self realization when facing retirement, and the drive to still be an active participant as one ages. These waterfront walksare rich fieldworks to grasp the assimilation of the aged women’s citadinité with their inclusion in the community. Looking at the life course of elderly women (familial, professional, residential), the analysis has shown a grand diversity of modes of inclusion in relation to the space. The application of the notion of déprise, a form of disengagement which looks at the evolution of use of space ,through aging showing on what people « give up » and « hold on», allows to investigate the level of maintenance of social inclusion in the community. Through these characteristics, waterfront walks offers to aging women a resourceful space to readjust practices as the disengagement suggests it, allowing the maintenance of the citadinité. The waterfront walk allows, through the practices, to express oneself, but in various forms as long as the search for social relationships, fresh air, independence, autonomy, novelty, have the power to establish the women’s citadinité through aging

Texto completoThe important evolutions of the coastal tourist planning lead to the mutation of the seaside resort system. The constituents of the latter are generated and modified according to the context of the society and to the conceptions of nature, tourism and town planning, definiting it. Thus, if the ecumene coast is contemporary with the earliest elitist resorts, falling within capitalism and ostentatious town building, nowdays, the heritage coast, prompted by a local voluntarism, is based on a well-regulated development and an integrated built planning. According to the assertion of the sustainable tourism, to the authentification of resorts as tourist products and to the emergence of original " heritage-land " territorialities, the model of the integrated coastal resort can be identified. The latter is one constituent pole of the " heritage land " of coastal integrated tourist planning, which caracterize the current mutation of the tourist coasts

Texto completoThe maritime vocation of Finistere has been reinforced for the last 30 years by the outstanding expansion of pleasure sailing. This department presents several specific characteristics as far as sailing harbour equipments are concerned : marinas have been rejected to the advantage of smaller units ; the yachting harbours have been set up with an irregular geographical distribution depending on the physical and human conditions of the coastal environment ; their customers are mainly composed of local sailors with a marked preference for a close sailing area, with fairly small incomes but a well-established sailing practice : the need for equipments has arisen more from a collective will than from the cupidity of some covetous property developers. The sailing harbours, centres for tourist and sea activities, participate in the development of the littoral of finistere. They open onto 3 different areas : the maritime space which constitutes a recreational zone with various exploitations, the town to which they are generally attached, the inland where they have socio-economical effects and find their users

Texto completoDespite their usefulness, few researches in social marketing have been conducted in the environmentaldomain (McKenzie-Mohr et al., 2011). This research proposes to focus on the persuasion of environmental associations promoting the adoption of pro-environmental behaviors on the littoral. A qualitative study carried out among 17 actors in coastal protection shows that the different elements of the social marketing mix are deployed by these actors with a predominance of communication in the case of associations. As the literature highlights the low level of involvement in environmental issues in recreational and tourism contexts, the second study focuses on communication heuristics. Thus, through a quantitative study of 1360 individuals, we analyze the effect of two communication heuristics: the nonprofit brand as the source of the message and the social norms within the message through a modeling of their effects on three pro- environmental behaviors (Garbage collection, petition signing, donation). The results model the antecedents of attachment to the nonprofit brand and show its significant positive effect on the adoption of pro-environmental behaviors. However, social norms do not moderate this relationship. This research contributes to the literature on social marketing highlighting the effects of nonprofit brand attachment to the adoption of behavior promoted by the association. It also contributes to the literature on pro- environmental behavior by studying these behavior in a less studied context, the recreational context. From a managerial standpoint, it offers a way to guide future communication campaigns of environmental associations and invites them to work on their branding strategy to accentuate the effects of thesecampaigns

Texto completoFrom the mouth of the loire down to that of the bidassoa, 550 kilometres of coastline stretch along, facing the ocean. After being devoted for a long time to maritime, agricultrual and forest activities, this atlantic area gradually became one of the chief touristic centres of our country. This success does not arise from more chance, but, on the contrary, is the outcome of experiences which reflect the history of mentalities, needs and customs of the prevailing groups which ever since the restoration, have followed one another, when we examine the main stages in the growth of seaside resorts, its enables us to point out the different splits which emphasize the history of touristic cities and conjure up the role played by factors of geographical location (climate, sites, men's actions). The touristic images are clearly defined. The decisive agents for growth (doctors, artists, railways compagnies. . . ) and their deeds are ultimately recorded. In a second section, we will take an interest in the different populations who happen to meet every summer. We will then analyse how tastes and customs changed in the course of time and how they brought about changes in the way in which those resorts grew. In a second stage, we will study the impact of tourism on social life from a demogreaphic as welle as economic wiew. And last of all, we will wonder under what conditions the native and the tourist populations managed to get together

Texto completoThe aim of this doctoral research is to analyse the issues raised by the emergence of surfing in Madagascar (Tananarive, Mahambo, Ambatomalama, Fort-Dauphin and Tulear) and Morocco (Rabat, Safi and Imsouane), based on a field study in several localities. The circulation of cultural models, in particular the transformation of a localised cultural physical practice into a globalised sport during the second half of the 20th century, reinforces the imaginaries and representations of the surf and the surfer both by the practitioners themselves and by non-practitioners. Since the beginning of the 2000s, the relationship with the coastline, and more precisely with the beach and the ocean, has changed through surfing in the above-mentioned localities, as this space of uncontrollable immensity exerts a repulsive and fearful effect on most Malagasy people, whether they live near the coast or not. In Morocco, however, public policies promote the development of coastal sports tourism. Various formal and informal organisational arrangements are established by surfers in order to transform their areas into a new outlet for (sport) tourism. The crossing of levels (from the body level to the global level), the issues raised in the fields of cultural geography and social geography, the implementation of a qualitative survey lasting several months in Madagascar and Morocco, as well as the lack of scientific literature on the Malagasy and the Moroccan coastal life, contribute to the originality of this research subject

Texto completoHow to consider the sustainability of tourist areas in time ? The analysis of dynamic evolution of space is apprehended through traditional theories and concepts. Through the examples of two coasts-economic model of mass tourism, this thesis wishes to contribute to the debate by placing the system of tourism stakeholders in the center of the analysis in a broader perspective of governance. The results from a series of interviews on the Vendée coast and the Costa del Sol illustrate the importance of the actor in structuring public spaces and in the refinement of the positioning of the site. Strategies adopted include the territorial marketing with the diversification of tourism offer or yet the identity of areas. In addition, the choices made by the system of actors are partially constrained as they perform in a given context and at a given time, marked in particular by processes such as changes in tourism practices and leisure, the development of residential mobility on coastal destination or the aging of the population in such areas. So, every touristic place is unique and its evolution depends on both the involvement of the system of the actors, the strategies and the processes in progress

Texto completoTourism on Brittany coastal area experiences a third development cycle. A first elitist cycle and a further mass-market one created a disbalance between north and south coast. They modelled a young low middle-class profiled customer type, more prone to camping and second housing. The new model introducts more artificialised leisure in touristic expenditures. It provides various mobilities to more segmented customers with more departures and various travel lengths. Brittany coastal aera benefits of brittany improving global trade mark in spite of weather uncertainty, ecological dangers and landscapes injuries. It remains a main holiday aera with a strong regional attendance and becomes slowly a prominent week end and second holiday zone. In this remodelling for an european middle class, higher quality in hotels and camping is linked with reduced capacities, all the so more for social holidays lodging. In the same time smaller and newer types of accomodation appear. Second homes decrease with their transformation in house for retirement and with a greater social selection. Public collectivities sustain touristic specialisation but also create a new spatial balance with tourisitc " pays ". The touristic destination has a new content with a multimodal transport link. A strong existing trade mark. A wide display of accomodation and leisure. On the new examined destinations, some have an uncomplete supply and a weakness in trade mark and attendance i. In each aera can be distinguished different strategies of seaside towns, of balneary suburbs ? of urban resort and of isolat resort ,based on distinct urban attributes and various maraketing profile. The north coast benefits of new comparative advantages, while east becomes stronger. Thus with its own light and splitted way, Brittany coastal aera accomodates the new touristic model

Texto completoAn important and varied population frequents the Languedoc-Roussillon coast. Indeed following a French determined politics of development to increase tourism (Mission Racine, 1963 - 1982) this coast has become the fourth most important tourist region of the country. To this seasonal human pressure another one has appeared for about ten years: the one of the permanent population who increases a lot with the newcomers. Tourists, nearby and local population (who embed the newcomers) have different perceptions and practices of the coast areas. From these different perceptions and practices, several “Territorialisation” processes appear. To reduce the conflicts and the environment damages due to sometimes inadequate organized human frequentation, it is necessary to act while enhancing the cultural identities linked to the coast some of them are in complete evolution. In this context, politics and administrators show strongly their wishes to find a balance between a demographic increase and inheritance protection. Indeed, a thought and tools have been developed to achieve this aim. To understand and eventually to analyze a territory frequentation we must answer to six key questions: How many people? Who are they? Where do they come from? What are their practices? Why do they come here and not somewhere else? What are the impacts due to the frequentation? The understanding and the analysis of the territorial dynamics (mutations, the way the areas are appropriated, the practices) for the frequentation and its impacts on the sensitive natural areas of the coast rely on the combination of the results of the frequentation studies, perception enquiries and the observation data of the Earth. Through an experimental research on the both well distinguished territories, Leucate and “palavasiens” lagoons, we will show developed indicators, as well as the used method to try to define some carrying capacity thresholds

Texto completoSince the 1960s, the activity of yachting has known a record development and Brittany is directly involved. Indeed, its coastline harbours more than 76. 000 pleasure crafts and contains hundreds of marinas, harbours and moorings. But beyond these figures, pleasure boating has its own territorial logic which is linked with harbours and moorings, yachting practices, and also with a hinterland where nautical sector firms and yachting residences are localised. Through this research work, many territorial uses, at the same time terrestrial and maritime, have been distinguished all along the Breton coastline. Even if more and more local authorities admit the legitimacy of these territories, there are still difficulties between the users and the administrative divisions. As these areas which are used for pleasure boating are appropriate in order to manage pleasure boating, but difficult to identify, this thesis proposes some keys to achieve this identification

Texto completoIn the context of the development of the notion of "Sustainable Tourism", that implies the revolution of tourism towards environment, this study tried to understand the perceptions and uses of Nature spread on the most important seaside resorts of the French Atlantic coast - Biarritz, Royan and La Baule. This research has the objective to know if Nature is really seen like an essential element of the seaside resorts. Beside, in order to confirm or deny the so-called "new" character of this environmentalist attention, we have studied the evolution of its perceptions and uses since the foundation of the seaside resorts. So, this research leads to establish that, far from being an immutable scientific reality, Nature is a dynamic social construction. A social construction that is used on the seaside resorts, defined since their creation like places combining the appeal of the urban centrality and the appeal of an environment of high quality. The long-standing of the Nature element doesn't mean the constancy of its interpretations that have being changing since the XIXth century. However, these evolutions affect more the perceptions than the practices of Nature that stays essentially used in a recreational context, in those seaside resorts dedicated to the re-creation including the recreation. This fact denies the ability of the forms of tourism so-called "ecologist" to replace its traditional uses, since the tourists are still above all looking for the leisure brought by the union of the coastline and the city, and this, despite a strong environmentalist feeling

Texto completoThe microbiological quality of bathing water is progressively decreasing from year to year, and can constitute a major public health problem. Thus, sanitary monitoring of the microbiological quality of bathing waters is carried out in accordance with the European directive (2006/7/EC) to ensure the sanitary safety of bathers and preserve the image of these recreational ecosystems. For many years, the bay of Aytré (Charente Maritime, France), has been classified as "poor quality" and this beach is prohibited for bathing since 2018. The health issues and the preponderant role of this beach on the tourism development and the local economy led to investigate the origin and the spatiotemporal determinism of this fecal contamination. This thesis presents an integrated approach to the analysis of the fecal contamination of Aytré Bay through a multidisciplinary study of different hypotheses analysed since the beginning of the 2000s by the local authorities. The level of fecal contamination of the bathing water during a year was relatively low with a notable seasonal variation in the abundance of the fecal contamination indicators Escherichia coli and enterococci. Exceedances of the regulatory thresholds on 24% and 32% of the water samples from Platin Nord and Platin Sud, the two bathing sites in Aytré Bay, were mainly due to enterococci. The microbiological quality of the sediment over time showed that the sediment was not a diffuse source of contamination in the water. The combined analysis of protein, genetic and chemical markers revealed the presence of enterococci species of environmental origin on the one hand, and on the other hand, a contamination of mainly animal origin and a small contribution from human origin. The analytical strategy and tools developed during this study will help to improve the sanitary surveillance methods of bathing waters

Texto completoThe aim of this doctoral thesis is to provide models of various developments specific to seaside resorts. These coastal regions are now considered as coherent economic entities thanks to the expansion witnessed in the tourist industry over the years. This study, which focuses on a large number of years, describes the development of these resorts, evoking all the factors which characterize the development of these seaside resorts in particular will be thouroughly examined, in terms of local and regional economy, national development, employment, population growth, etc. Even the most unexpected side effects of this growth will be dealt with. Indirectly, the emergence of new social trends, " propaganda ", images, etc, gradually gives birth to a new vision of the sea and the seaside. These elements will in turn create a new way of life. All the information comes from different archives of the seaside resorts in question, as well as the Archives Départementales of each district constituting the main source. An important selection of books dealing with seaside resorts constitutes another major source of information, together with pictures of all kinds relating to this subject

Texto completoOn July 13th 2001, the city of La Rochelle, involved with Paris in a candidacy for Olympic Games 2008, was seething with excitement. At the head of local population, elected representatives and managers of local yachting activities were waiting for the verdict of the International Olympic Committee, which would turn the small coastal city into a world-class centre of water-based sports. Although Beijing, and later London in 2012 were preferred, the Paris candidacy has awarded La Rochelle an international reputation. This thesis aims to describe how the city, primarily a fishing and trade harbour, hosted a marina in the early 1970’s that eventually became the largest one of the French Atlantic coast, with more than 4800 moorings. Based on theoretical concepts underlying leisure boating activities, a comprehensive study was carried out on documentary data since World War II. Tracing back the history of the local yachting club Société des Régates Rochelaises and the life of renowned sailors shed a new light on the root causes of coastal management in the city. In the early 1960’s, leisure yachting was a fresh boost to declining economic activities. Since then, ambitious projects were planned with the aim of turning La Rochelle into a seaside resort. The race for coastal planning was engaged at the broader scale of the Charente Maritime department, which was almost nicknamed "Leisure coasts". The La Rochelle marina was an important tool of territorial development and a valuable element of the city, but its sprawling growth eventually became a threat to seaside tourism

Texto completoThis study aims at exploring the relationships between land property and the various types of urbanization in greece along the sea-shore, a special attention being given to the spatial, economic and social conditions in which that process takes place. The first part is a critical analysis of the public policies set up to make possible the financing of the branch of tourism. It also studies the national pattern of regional planning which exists in the country. Finally, il shows their common influence upon the spatial extension of tourism at the nation-wide level. The second part is a case study of the touristic urbanization in the island of rhodes. The diachronic data gathered about the way land is being transferred between persons in three resort centers along the shore give important clues about the variety of methods wich are being used by landowners as the urban pressure goes on. Drawing upon the preceding analyses, the third part of the study tries to show how the various modes of touristic urbanization in rhodes island are submitted to more general conditions of the production of land rent as landowners and business confront themselves to each other so as to exploit this rend with the best possible conditions. The study of the socio-economical functions of land property on the one side, and the local geographical caracteristics on the other, suggest strong hypotheses for explaining the way one may see the touristic amenities develop and spread in the island

Texto completoPeople with disabilities can they be tourists ? Facing the discrepancy between the deficient body and the environment, what actions can be implemented to facilitate access of tourists with limited mobility to coastal amenities ? Spatial discontinuities create situations of disability and entail strong socio-spatial inequalities when it's a matter in access to territorial resources. Faced with this situation the law of February 11th 2005 mandates the establishment of public policy of accessibility based on the paradigm of design for all. If it is recognized that people with disabilities have the right to work, access to holidays and leisure attached to it are less taken into account in our society. Yet, the right to tourism is a strong social claim by disabled people. To answer this, French government help to create new modalities of access to tourism practices through the label "Tourisme & handicap". Widely unprecedented in the French geographic research, the relationship between tourism and disability raises yet many questions about mobility, mode of dwelling tourist, socio-spatial inclusion or citizenship of people with disabilities. For this we will do, using the tools of Geography, like GIS, the hypothesis of the usefulness of a territorial model tourism accessible so that the public policy of disability can contribute to fight effectively against spatial injustices, to facilitate the acceptance of human diversity and to maximise conditions of concretisation well-being of people otherwise capable

Texto completoOpen-access is probably the main cause of crowding on recreational sites. Then visitation equilibrium is not optimal because of an externality of congestion. Although, most or recreation demand models omit this explanatory variable or introduce it as exogenous whereas it is me result or a Nash equilibrium. We develop a theoretical framework to derive visitation equilibrium and visitation optimum in a two sites random utility model with participation. We find that congestion leads to two external effects: a first effect due to the repartition of visits and a second linked to participation. At equilibrium, we show that participation is too high and that the high quality site is too much visited. To apply this framework, a survey on visitation of 43 recreational sites has been conducted. 1079 tourists and. Residents have been interviewed. Random utility models have been estimated to explain participation and site choice. When models are estimated at the Nash equilibrium, congestion has a negative impact on utility. Finally, we simulate the impact of different kinds of taxes, on participation, on the repartition of visits and welfare. Only the simultaneous taxation of a sufficient number of sites increases the welfare by dropping participation

Texto completoTourism is considered a recent phenomenon that gained popularity with increase in leisure time and better means of transport. Our research focuses on two beach resorts : La Baule in France and Bournemouth in the United Kingdom. These destinations were created ex-nihilo by tourism and gained popularity in the 19th century. Statistical research shows that they have gradually evolved into cities wherein tourism remains one of the important factors in the economy. Our field research and interviews in La Baule and Bournemouth shows that both these sites are evolving into favoured destinations for "living" : be it for retirement or for owning second homes. La Baule remains a favoured destination where second homes are owned by people coming from the Paris region as well as the neighbouring city of Nantes. Bournemouth has seen an increased popularity thanks ti its investment in "education" : be it language schools or the famed Bournemouth University. The increased economic activity due to an increase in the local population has put pressure on housing demand. Both Bournemouth and La Baule are destinations that seem to have overcome the "seasonality" facror that most tourism destinations were once forced to live with. Texto completoAs the world population gets more and more water loving, the coast territories have been organized in order to answer this new request. In this dynamic, coast sports have been constantly expanding massively and in various forms to concern a larger portion of the population today . Reunion Island –in the Indian Ocean- has also taken part in this move. Yet, while the evolution of maritimity between tradition and modernity seems to be taking place in many places all around the world, the West coast of Reunion Island –although full of assets- seems unable to transform its initial resource in a territorial resource. Our work suggests studying the link between a territory –the West coast of Reunion Island- and its coast from a sociogeographic point of view in order to analyze the brakes to the apparition of a new maritimity within this space. Our results show that contrary to the conveyed picture, Reunion island and particularly its West coast is the right place to practice coast sports. In spite of the favorable geographic context, the absence of developments and events able to structure this expansion, together with the domination of the representations conveying the picture of a population “with their backs to the sea” seem to be limiting factors. The different actors concerned are partly responsible and particularly the political actors who do not play their parts as they do not carry a real territory project aimed at coast sports. It remains that the change of maritimity is at work on this coast. Reunion island is building its own model. The use of the coast space is evolving, growing out of its usual uses, the organization of events is developing encouraged by the expansion of Stand Up Paddle and the outlines of new developments are being drawn. On a board or in the sand, the new generation is taking over the coast integrating outside influences

Texto completoIn France, coastline is considered as a major area for tourism and leisure practices and is ranked before city, mountain and rural areas. This tourism attraction questions coastal areas organization and management in a context of coastline development and growing awareness of environmental issues among their managers. Focused on a micro-geographical approach analyzing beaches as recreation areas, this thesis demonstrates and explains that beaches organization and functioning depend on interrelation logics and spatial expectations of beachgoers. This research begins with a conceptual framework before analyzing the beach practice area through the positioning space and population of beachgoers. Later, it identifies hidden dimensions structuring beaches spatiotemporal dynamics distribution attendancy based on both individual, group and practice area scales. These dimensions are composed of geographic distances between users and beach occupation density. Finally, this research analyzes spatial expectations of beachgoers that explain the beach functioning. Between looking for tranquility or sociability, natural or urbanized areas, ordinary or extra-ordinary relation to beach areas, this work demonstrates that spatial expectations influence user’s attitudes and locations alongside beaches, and determine comfort and user’s satisfaction degree. Main results of this research are presented in a beach filling model directed to researchers and beaches' administrators
