Direct translations of classic works from the original language have become a major factor used by the publishing industry to attract the reading public. Thus, literary works that had originally reached the Brazilian reading public via indirect translations, primarily from an English or French source text, are now being rendered into Portuguese directly from Russian originals. Considering the impact that Russian literature had in the Western world when it started to circulate in translation in the late 19th century, this thesis focuses on direct and indirect translations into Portuguese of the work of two great Russian authors, Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoievsky. The study is informed by polysystem theory (Even-Zohar 1990) and Descriptive Translation Studies (Toury, 1995; Lefevere, 1992) and aims, through the analysis of comments produced by literary theoreticians, scholars, critics, and translators, both to determine the image of these authors and their respective works - and of Russian Literature as a whole - that was constructed by these translations and to verify to what extent the image resulting from recent direct translations from the original Russian texts differs from that which was produced by indirect renderings.

Texto completoThe present study aims to analyze the translation process of the book Queen of Air and Darkness (2019) of the Shadowhunters saga from English to Spanish by Hispanic fans. The fan translators considered that the previous official translations by Editorial Planeta did not fulfill their expectations. Therefore, they decided to use Facebook to start an online community translation process focused on producing a text in a short time, without compromising its quality. This qualitative study will allow us, through data production techniques such as interviews and document analysis, to learn more about the stages of the translation process of the fan translators team Shadowhunters contra la Ley. Also, it will help us to understand the internal relationship of the team and the relationship between the team and the fandom during the translation of the fantasy novel Queen of Air and Darkness.

Based on Jiří Levý s concept of illusionist translation this study investigates the issue of dialogue translation in literary works. Supported Marcos Bagno s observation that not even cultivated people speak according to the rules of prescriptive grammar, this research endorses the notion that we live in a register diglossia. Since the 1970s, according to John Milton, the Brazilian publishing market has been more open to the principle of the verisimilitude effect when it comes to recreating characters direct speech in Portuguese — a statement that will be verified through the comparison of three Brazilian versions of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain. Next, through the commented translation of excerpts from May We Be Forgiven, a novel by American writer A. M. Homes, we verify which orality markers are already accepted by the publishing market. Finally, this study also seeks new markers in descriptive grammars of standard spoken language.

Texto completoENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this dissertation two relatively under-researched areas within the scope of translation studies are investigated: the production process of translations and the sociological and cognitive aspects involved in this production process (as opposed to only studying the translation product). Process and sociological studies are currently on the forefront of research in translation studies and this dissertation attempts to contribute to these fields. The current study investigates the role of the various agents (among others the publisher, reviser and editor) involved in the production process of translations to illustrate how this process involves more agents than only the translator. Translation is proven to be a process involving a network of agents who work together to produce the final product, i.e. the target text. In this dissertation this interaction between agents is examined by making use of Latour's Actor-Network-Theory (ANT), a sociological theory that focuses on the network and links between agents within a production process. The production processes of literary translations that are analysed in this dissertation are Niggie – To hell with Cronjé (Ingrid Winterbach), Vaselinetjie – My name is Vaselinetjie (Anoeschka von Meck) and a selection of the "Stoffel tales" – In bushveld and dessert: A game ranger's life (Christiaan Bakkes). These texts were all translated by the literary translator Elsa Silke and published by NB Publishers in 2007, 2009 and 2008, respectively. The versions of the texts analysed are the source text, the concept translation, any other preliminary versions (manuscripts) and the completed published target text. These texts are analysed along with all available correspondence between agents to reconstruct the production processes in order to determine how translations are produced by means of interaction between different agents. This study is therefore greatly exploratory by nature and aimed at revealing the "invisible" of the production process of literary translations in order to contribute to and promote research within this under-researched field of translation studies. The main focus of this study is to analyse how each agent's inputs have a sociological impact on other agents and the production processes, as well as how their interaction and decisions impact the target text. The results are predominantly presented descriptively (within the framework of Descriptive Translation Studies [DTS]) and concepts of Nord's Functionalism, Even-Zohar's Polysystem Theory, Bourdieu's theory on the field of cultural production, Sharpe and Gunther's editing principles and Mossop's theory on editing and revision of translated texts are used to analyse and discuss the production processes of the three literary translations mentioned above. In conclusion a model is presented, based on these analyses, depicting a possible optimal production process for literary translations. A possible chronology of steps in the production process and means of interaction between agents are depicted by this model. With this proposed model this dissertation contributes to theory development within the field of translation studies and editing and revision theory. This model can be applied to production processes of literary translations to test if it is viable to apply in practice to ensure a more effective production process as well as a successful product (target text). If this model proves to be effective, it can eventually serve as a guideline for literary translation practice.

Texto completoThe aim of this study was to identify the strategies used to render the literary dialect in A State of Independence into the Swedish translation. In order to systematically study the translation solutions, a number of ‘coupled pairs’ consisting of source text ‘problems’ and target text ‘solutions’ were extracted from the original text and the translation. The ‘coupled pairs’ were then analysed in order to detect regularities in the translation solutions. The study showed that the major strategy used by the translator was the use of ‘eye-dialect’, i.e. non-standard spellings that simulate non-standard speech. Moreover, some passages in the translation had been standardised, whereas eye-dialectal spellings were found in other passages where the original did not contain any non-standard features. Finally, a comparative count of dialectally marked utterances in both texts was made. The count showed that the dialectal markers were in the majority in the translation, which might indicate that the translator has tried to compensate for the lack of equivalent target language features.

Texto completoThe graphic novel Persepolis (2000), written and illustrated by the Iranian artist and writer Marjane Satrapi, was first published in France, and then, due to its success, it was soon translated to several languages. Although it portraits a peripheral culture (Iranian), the fact that is was published in French and in a country where the comics culture is quite appreciated brought the work to the center of what Even-Zohar (1990) coined “literary polysystem”. On the same direction, its translations also occupy the center of the translated literature polysystem, since French comics are respected and consumed in the anglophone literary system. In Brazil, in addition to the aforementioned reasons, an autobiographical graphic novel fills the gap of such kind of production in the local literary repertoire. Considering it is an autobiographical narrative which takes place mostly in Iran, portraying the country's culture, yet originally written in French, the text presents cultural marks from these two cultures in a very peculiar way. Therefore, the translations need to adequate a series of terms from the source culture(s) to the target cultures; mostly, with regard to the Iranian context, due to the cultural distance between Western and Eastern countries. Concerning the translation activity, the researcher Javier Franco Aixelá (1996) designates as “culture-specific items” (CSIs) the linguistic expressions that may cause problems to translators due to divergences in cultural understanding, such as proper names, brands and institutions, for instance, items which are constantly present in Satrapi’s text; he categorizes those items according to the possible manipulation they may receive. In the present work, the culture-specific items are found in the source text, and the solutions used in the translations to Brazilian Portuguese and to English are categorized according to Aixelá’s proposition and, finally, compared. Thus, it is possible to observe if the difficulties in transposing the cultural items to both target languages are similar to each other, as well as if the strategies used by the translators of the two languages are the same or differ from each other.
