Resumen
Although Bernardin's correspondence spans most of his adult life and involves a wide range of correspondents and subject matter, there is a marked increase in the number of correspondents and frequency of correspondence from the time he begins to enjoy real literary success. Indeed, the relationship between the reading and writing of letters and the writing and reading of Bernardin's published works is a close and multi-faceted one. The focus for this article is the correspondence between Bernardin and Mme de Genlis, one of the most significant literary figures in Bernardin's correspondence network. Their correspondence casts light on Bernardin's place in late eighteenth-century literary and cultural life and his developing identity as an author. Bernardin's correspondence with Mme de Genlis helps him to deal with practical issues surrounding the publication of his works, and to explore the moral and ethical implications of authorship; but it also reveals the difficulties inherent in the act of correspondence itself.

Early nineteenth-century natural history books reveal that British naturalists depended heavily on correspondence as a means for gathering information and specimens. Edward Newman commented in his History of British Ferns: ‘Were I to make out a list of all the correspondents who have assisted me it would be wearisome from its length.’ Works such as William Withering's Botanical Arrangement show that artisans numbered among his correspondents. However, the literary products of scientific practice reveal little of the workings or such correspondences and how or why they were sustained. An exchange or letters is maintained if the interests of both recipient and writer are satisfied. Withering's book tells us only that his interests were served by his correspondents; it allows us to say nothing with certainty about the interests of those who wrote to him. Published texts effectively hide the means by which the author determined the veracity of distant correspondents and also the way these informants demonstrated their credibility.

This article explores the issue of women's representational genealogies through an analysis of Andrea Arnold's 2011 Wuthering Heights. Beginning with 1970s feminist arguments for a specifically female literary tradition, it argues that running through both these early attempts to construct an alternative female literary tradition and later work in feminist philosophy, cultural geography and film history is a concern with questions of ‘alternative landscapes’: of how to represent, and how to encounter, space differently. Adopting Mary Jacobus' notion of intertextual ‘correspondence’ between women's texts, and taking Arnold's film as its case study, it seeks to trace some of the intertextual movements – the reframings, deframings and spatial reorderings – that link Andrea Arnold's film to Emily Brontë’s original novel. Focusing on two elements of her treatment of landscape – her use of ‘unframed’ landscape and her focus on visceral textural detail – it points to correspondences in other women's writing, photography and film-making. It argues that these intensely tactile close-up sequences which puncture an apparently realist narrative constitute an insistent presence beneath, or within, the ordered framing which is our more usual mode of viewing landscape. As the novel Wuthering Heights is unmade in Arnold's adaptation and its framings ruptured, it is through this disturbance of hierarchies of time, space and landscape that we can trace the correspondences of an alternative genealogy.

Following previous work by the authors (Ponce de León & Duarte 2013; Duarte & Ponce de León 2015; Duarte & Ponce de León 2017; Duarte & Ponce de León 2018; Ponce de León & Duarte 2020), the paper aims to analyse the discourse values of the Spanish forms ahora (que) / ahora bien - studied in detail by specialists (Martín Zorraquino & Portolés 1999; Santos Río 2003; Fuentes 2009; Loureda & Acín 2010) - and their correspondences with Portuguese discourse markers, by analysing Portuguese translations of Spanish literary texts. The paper is divided in three parts: a) In the first part, following our previous work (Ponce de León & Duarte 2020) and other studies - some of them cited above - that analyse discourse markers, the different discourse values assumed by these forms are briefly presented and analysed, from a synchronic and diachronic perspective, based on grammatical and lexicographical resources, as well as on Spanish corpora. b) In the second part, the correspondences of the analysed values of ahora (que) / ahorabien with Portuguese expressions, ora and agora are determined. Studies on these Portuguese markers (Duarte 1989; Gonçalves 2004; Marques & Rei 2020) are used to establish these correspondences. c) In the third part, the correspondences of ahora (que) / ahora bien in a corpus of translations into Portuguese of Spanish-language literary texts are studied, trying to clarify the acceptability of different translation solutions for each value of the forms ahora (que) / ahora bien.

The Mongolic term khaan (‘king’), for which there is full correspondence, semantic and phonological, in sixteenth century Portuguese cão, is used as a starting-point to identify the graphemes that correspond to several Mongolic consonants in place names transcribed in the chapters related to the Tartars in Fernão Mendes Pinto’s Peregrinação (1614). With the deduced rules of pronunciation at hand, it is possible to establish new pairs of lexical correspondences and solve a brief lexicon extracted from the list of Tartar toponyms.

The article precedes the publication of 14 newly found correspondences of the classic of Russian literature of the 20 th century Vsevolod Ivanov (1895–1963). All of them were published in August – September 1919 in the mobile front-line newspaper “Vperyod” and are connected with the history of plots and stories of the writer about the Civil War in Siberia, first of all, with his famous story “Armored Train 14-69”. The publication fills in the gap associated with the incompleteness of the set of the newspaper “Vperyod” in the repositories of Moscow and St. Petersburg. The gap was filled thanks to the newspaper fund of the Scientific Library of Tomsk State University. The political and literary contexts of Ivanov’s work in the newspaper “Vperyod” are recreated, his relationship with the editor of the newspaper V. G. Yanchevetsky (1875–1954), known as the writer Vasily Yan, is described. An explanation of the changes in the views of the writer in 1919 is proposed. The poetics and genre of the published correspondence is preliminary characterized.

In Russian linguistics, there is a categorisation of equivalents to German compound words in Russian. The article discusses the features of the existing approach and suggests refinements based on the conducted analysis. The relevance of the article lies in the fact that it complements the existing criteria and expands the ideas concerning possible correspondences to German compound 66 words in Russian, which is a contribution both to the study of compound words in German, and to the comparative study of German and Russian languages, in general. Compound words in the German language as a specific phenomenon in the word formation of this language present the object of the study, and its subject is the categorisation of correspondences between compound nouns in German and their equivalents in Russian. The method of comparison includes correlating German compound nouns with their equivalents in Russian, identifying the frequency of using certain models when translating German compound nouns into Russian on the basis of an excerpt from the original text and its translation. The purpose of the article is to systematise the correspondences of German compound nouns in Russian on the example of a certain literary text. The author’s task is to update the categorisation of correspondences for compound nouns in German and their equivalents in Russian, suggested in previous studies, in the process of identifying the predominant type of correspondences on a specific literary material. The following methods were used: a continuous sampling method, the component analysis, a descriptive method, a comparative analysis of the original and translation, and the method of quantitative analysis. The study combines the comparative (proper linguistic) aspect and the translational one. The main models of correspondences to German compound nouns in Russian found confirmation within the analysed material, while the author suggested some additions, which present the novelty of the research. The following results were noted: in terms of frequency the model of “an adjective plus a noun” takes the first place among correspondences to German compound nouns in Russian; the second place is taken by root and derivative words of the Russian language; the third place occupies a group of translation transformations, supplemented by the author; the fourth place is taken by a model of “a noun plus another noun in the genitive case”; the fifth place goes to prepositional word combinations. Two small groups - compound nouns of the Russian language and set expressions - are added by the author. In the identified group of transformations, the use of various translation techniques is noted, for example: adding and omitting lexical units, replacing parts of speech, generalisation, concretisation, semantic development, holistic transformation, replacement of one syntactic construction with another.

Problems of polish romanticism in the perception of literary critic Mihal Grabovskyj (according to the materials of correspondence). This article is devoted to integrated research into correspondence of polish literary man M. Grabovskyj, analyzed literary and philosophic views of master in a diachronic aspect, his aesthetic priorities, described the evolution of general vital references of theoretician, and outlined the division into periods of creation and philosophic views of figure. A lot of attention is given to elucidation letters’ genres of M. Grabovskyj and its style. For the first time it is the attempt of new valuation of his achievements and intentions, consideration and description epistolary heritage of M. Grabovskyj, which include theoretical-literary dialogues with the famous polish artists of XIX c. In his enormous array there are the conceptual reasoning andestimations of both work of separate writers and of that timeliterary process. The looks of writer were constantly evolved, that does any division into periods of correspondence conditional enough. However there sre distinguished two periods: European-”loyal” (1823 -1843) and later “tendentious” clerical-panslavics’ (1843 – 1863). The range of letters’ problems of of the first period marks adaptation of ideas of European (German) romanticism to national traditions, grouping and consolidation by the leaders of Polish romantic literature. These ideas contain optimistic character and sent to deepening the national perception of the world. The second period is characterized by correlations of the own theory of romanticism, ambiguousness of communicative structure. Grabovskyj comprehended the nomenclature of texts of romantic canon. The letters of М. Grabovskyj, that became the article of independent analysis first, substantially specify presentation in the relation to his literary- aesthetic program realized in the articles. In that correspondences, especially in those that are addressed to the closest friends he was frank and formulated the positions laconically and clearly. In the letters of artist it is legitimate to see continuation of critical articles.

Abstract Recent research on deictic elements has made extensive use of translation corpora to demonstrate that asymmetries between translational paradigms signal subtle contrasts from a systemic and pragmatic perspective. The purpose of the present study is to identify translation correspondences of the English spatial demonstrative this in Lithuanian and to discuss the contrastive features within the analytical framework of translational explicitation and implicitation. The results indicate that in the prototypical situational usage there is a high degree of correspondence between this and its Lithuanian translation, while textual uses demonstrate low formal equivalence. A tendency to implicitate stems from the null subject construction and object ellipsis in Lithuanian and is also a result of the availability of facultative deictic words in Lithuanian. The apparent systemic difference between the deictic systems of English and Lithuanian indicates a tendency towards optional implicitation and stylistic variation in literary translation.

In this study we examine the occurrences and correspondences of terms for affinal kinship in a Bulgarian – Ukrainian parallel corpus of fiction. All instances of the terms selected for study, matching and non-matching, were located and counted, and the frequencies compared. Some of the asymmetries found may have roots in culture and history whilst others reflect diverse features of language and the practice of literary translation.

The correspondences between Faulkner’s and Odojewski’s works can be found not only on the formal level in the use of stream of consciousness, but also in the creation of characters, especially women, and the construction of spaces.

Resumen
The problem of the pictorial past in literature and of literary influences in painting has created a whole tradition. The literary experience of the image and the pictorial exercise in literature demonstrated the affinities between them, based on a specific view of the world. From contemporary philosophy, culture and literature, painting chooses its elements, symbols and ideational background, which is the substrate of the pictorial work. Translating them into the language of images, the painter reaches a more personal interpretation of literary works. The article presents a reflection on the prolific artistic career of the artist Cezar Secrieru, whose work creates a unique creative dynamic by transposing the mental and literary image into his canvases. The “Correspondences” of the arts enrich the deep ideational background of his creation, but also the diversification of the pictorial meanings potential.

The realm of discursivity is in truth heteroclite, submitted to metamor-phoses that testify the various correspondences between the axis of being (the on) and that of the existent (gegonos) is testified. Discursivity “pre-sentifies” in a manifested manner a referent that at the same time is not able to determine its existence without associating itself with a situation of knowledge, implicitly with a form of rendering and representation. Be-ing articulated as a conceptual hypostatisation of reason (the philosophic discourse), or a form that creates significance (the artistic discourse), a textual and socio-historical device (the literary discourse), as a closing up of the circle of interpretations (the scientific discourse) or as resignation in silence (the religious discourse), discourse itself emerges as a reflection of conscience about things, that is, it acts, produces, searches for affirmation, thus and ultimately crafting out a possible world.

Статья описывает наличие самодийско-монгольских языковых контактов на примере нарицательной лексики селькупского, хамниганского говора бурятского языка и литературного бурятского языка. Обнаружились как лексические, так и семантические соответствия селькупских, хамниганских и бурятских слов, что наводит на необходимость постановки проблемы изучения природы данных соответствий, как в аспекте этноязыкового субстрата, так и в плане языковых заимствований как результата длительных контактов. Перспективным оказалось привлечение лексики из Хамниганско-русского словаря, составленного, в том числе, и на основе полевых записей известного бурятского просветителя Цыбена Жамцарано, изданных в виде сборника «Улигеры ононских хамниган» в1911 г. Т. н. «к-говор» хамниган позволяет предполагать, что этот говор представляет собой «промежуточный» язык или пространственно-временной предел в историческом развитии бурятского языка. К примеру, сопоставление хамниганского күбкэ(н), көбкө(н) ‘лесной мох’ и бурятского хубхээ(н) ‘мох’ обнаруживает чередование к- // х-, типичного и для селькупского қальдерқо ~ қальтырықо ‘ходить; бродить; бегать’ и бурятского халтирха ‘поскальзываться; скользить; кататься на санках’. При этом результаты исследования ономастической лексики Восточного Забайкалья позволяют обозначить все-таки субстратное начало селькупско-бурятских соответствий нарицательной лексики. В отечественной науке пока не разработана область межъязыковых диахронных контактов, которая смогла бы объяснить подобного рода соответствия в области лексики исследуемых языков. Промежуточным звеном средневековых этноязыковых параллелей, объясняющим попутно этногенетическое начало монголоязычных бурят, является т.н. «хамниганское» прошлое бурят, т. е. самодийское. Детальное изучение соответствий нарицательной лексики двух неродственных языков (что не исключает гипотезы урало-алтайского языкового союза) позволяет, во-первых, иметь в виду и наличие тюркоязычной основы как общей, возникшей преимущественно в средние века, во-вторых, подтверждает наличие типологически обусловленных языковых явлений как селькупского, так и бурятского языков в области фонологии и грамматики. The article describes the presence of Samoyed-Mongolian language contacts on the example of the common vocabulary of the Sel’kup, Khamnigan dialect of the Buryat language and the literary Buryat language. Both lexical and semantic correspondences of Sel’kup, Khamnigan and Buryat words were found. This suggests the problem of studying the nature of these correspondences, both in terms of the ethno-linguistic substrate and in terms of language borrowings as a result of long-term contacts. The lexica taken from the Khamnigan-Russian dictionary, compiled and being based on field records of well-known Buryat educator Tsyben Zhamtsarano’s collection of folklore texts “Sacred tales of the Ononsky khamnigans” in1911. We reveal the problem through phonological correlations. The so-called “K-speech” of Khamnigans suggests that this dialect represents the “intermediate” language, or the “space-time bor-der” in the historical development of the Buryat language. For example, a comparison of khamnigan kubke (n), kobko(n) ‘forest moss’ and Buryat khubhe(n) ‘moss’ reveals an alternation of k- // x-, typical for Sel’kup kalderko ~ kaltyryko ‘walk; wander; run’ and Buryat haltirkha ‘slip; slide; sledge’. The results of the Samoyedic onomastic substrate of Eastern Transbaikalia allow us to confirm thesis of the tribal names Samoyed and Khamnigan as one and the same onoma. We suppose the so-called “khamnigan” past of the Buryats, i. e. Samoyed, is an intermediate link, which simultaneously explains the ethnogenetic origin of the Mongolian-speaking Buryats. A detailed study of the correspondence of the common vocabulary of two unrelated languages (which does not exclude the hypothesis of the Ural-Altaic language union) allows, first, to keep in mind the presence of the Turkic-language basis as a common one, and secondly, confirms the presence of typologically determined linguistic phenomena of both Sel’kup and Buryat languages in the field of phonology and grammar.

Abstract Daily communication today is predominantly digital, but contemporary novels continue to be interested in paper letters. Why? What do letters, written on paper, offer to the novel in the twenty-first century? This essay explores the material letter's contemporary value as metaphor, reading as a case study Ian McEwan's The Children Act. McEwan's novel dramatizes a conflict between religion and the secular law, which is an example of the type of dispute that Jean-François Lyotard identifies in The Differend: a dispute that is unresolvable because the process for regulating it is unable to register the wrong that one side suffers. In their different modes, these two texts consider intractable conflict and the ethics of its regulation, the workings of which are analyzed here through the suggestive correspondences between the dynamics of Lyotard's differend and those of letters. These correspondences derive, this essay argues, from the letter's material properties, which underlie its ability to function as metaphor. The letter's temporal structure of delay and the silences and instability that delay produces, in particular, have productive affinities with the workings of the differend. These correspondences help to delineate the conflicts of The Children Act and to reveal the value of the letter as metaphor more generally. This case study presents an example of the letter as a metaphorical resource, whose possibilities are distinct from those of digital communications and whose flexibility and nuance help to account for contemporary novels' continued interest in the letter.

In this paper, the ballet of Igor Stravinsky The Rite of Spring is interpreted from the perspective of Gaston Bachelard’s philosophical thought. Bachelard’s systematic psychoanalysis of literary images in The Psychoanalysis of Fire is applied to the interpretation of musical images in The Rite of Spring. Bearing in mind that rhythm is a key characteristic of Stravinsky’s composition, the paper analyses the immediate correspondences between Stravinsky’s and Bachelard’s perception and interpretation of rhythm in the works under consideration.

In this study we examine the occurrences and correspondences of terms for blood kinship in a Bulgarian – Ukrainian parallel corpus of fiction. All instances of the terms selected for study, matching and nonmatching, were located and counted, and the frequencies compared. Several interesting asymmetries are found, some due to differences in the structure of the kinship systems, which in turn have roots in culture and history, others reflecting diverse features of language and the practice of literary translation.

Purposes: This article is devoted to the study of realityн translation, the identification of the main types and difficulties of translation based on the material of literary works translated from Russian into Tatar. Implication/Application: Among the objective difficulties of the works of Russian writer translation into the Tatar language, one can note the mismatch of Russian and Tatar words or phrases expressing realities. It is especially difficult to translate those words and expressions that are close in meaning, but differ in “volume”. Results: The authors show the dependence of translation strategy choice on external sociocultural and pragmatic factors. The study also found out what problems may arise during the transfer of realities in translation, and the main difficulties are highlighted that arise during the translation of realities, in particular, during the absence of an equivalent, correspondence or analogue in the translated language, the need to convey not only the meaning of reality but also its color. Novelty: In our work, the essence of the realities was determined, the main aspects of reality transfer during translation were analyzed, the types of correspondences by a value between the realities, which can be grouped into three main ones, are considered: full, partial correspondence and its absence.

The article is devoted to the study of literary and biographical connections between the collision of Ivan Goncharov's first novel “A Common Story” and the conflict between Fyodor Dostoevsky and his guardian Pyotr Karepin. Analysing biographical materials, the author hypothesises that Fyodor Dostoevsky, meeting with Ivan Goncharov, while the latter was working on “A Common Story”, could partly influence the creation of the main collision and central images of the novel. Noting the plot and figurative convergence, the author of the article also shows the ideological difference between Ivan Goncharov and Fyodor Dostoevsky in the presentation of the conflict between uncle and nephew – two different minds, worldviews and representatives of two different generations. The author of the work presents significant and interesting correspondences between the life and creative paths of Ivan Goncharov and Fyodor Dostoevsky, noting the similar literary influences experienced by both writers, and also points to salons and literary circles where they could meet.

The aim of this paper is to bring to light through intertextual analysis some dimensions of continuity between the Hellenistic and Imperial theology of Isis and the figure of the Sacred Feminine as it appears in the Trimorphic Protennoia (NHC XIII 1). Instead of attempting to establish a diachronic (=historical) relationship of dependence between sources (e.g., borrowing, allusion, influence), this study establishes correspondences that can be traced on the literary level. Through a reception-oriented analysis, it will be possible to show the continuity between the Isiac religion and the late ancient mysticism of the Trimorphic Protennoia. A late ancient reader would have experienced the Nag Hammadi text in dialogue with Isiac traditions, and this literary dialogue with the Isiac religion would have nurtured and shaped their understanding of the sacred feminine described in the Trimorphic Protennoia.

Sebald (1944–2001) — first of all, on the example of his final work, the novel Austerlitz (2001), in which the most important themes and main stylistic and artistic strategies of the writer culminate. It is shown that the features of this text, including ways and patterns of movement and unfolding of thought in it, reflect and echo Wittgenstein’s ideas on “family resemblance” as a hidden principle organizing human language and experience (Philosophical Investigations, 1953). Since the research methodologically relies on a systematic approach, within which the writer’s creative heritage is viewed as a unity with its own hierarchy, structure, network of internal and external correspondences, an assumption is made, confirmed by several examples from other writer’s texts, that the identified functions and ways of existence of L. Wittgenstein’s image and ideas are characteristic for the literary text of the writer as a whole.

Abstract Since “we live in a culture of confession” (Gilmore 2001: 2; Rak 2005: 2) a rapidly growing popularity of various forms of life writing seems understandable. The question of memory is usually an important part of the majority of autobiographical texts. Taking into account both the popularity of life writing genres and their recent proliferation, it is interesting to see how the question “what would we be without memory?” (Sebald 1998 [1995]: 255) resonates within more experimental auto/biographical texts such as a graphic memoir/novel I Was a Child of Holocaust Survivors (2006) by Bernice Eisenstein and a volume of illustrated poetry and a biographical elegy published together as Correspondences (2013) by Anne Michaels and Bernice Eisenstein. These two experimental works, though representing disparate forms of writing, offer new stances on visualization of memory and correspondences between text and visual image. The aim of this paper is to analyze the ways in which the two authors discuss memory as a fluid concept yet, at the same time, one having its strong, ghostly presence. The discussion will also focus on the interplay between memory and postmemory as well as correspondences between the texts and the equally important visual forms accompanying them such as drawings, portraits, sketches, and the bookbinding itself.

Abstract Many contend that the Hellenistic-era author Artapanus employed the LXX translation, albeit in relatively liberal fashion. Departures from LXX narratives are attributed to his literary and apologetic interests. Although he may have relied upon a combination of oral and written sources, most scholars presuppose his primary reliance upon the LXX. This paper evaluates arguments for Artapanus’s use of the LXX, highlighting the paucity of decisive verbal links and weakness of other proposed linguistic correspondences, and attributing the emergence of similar Greek naming conventions between Artapanus and the LXX to the shared Egyptian provenance. These findings challenge the prevailing consensus concerning Artapanus’s source for Jewish traditions.

Interrelation of literary and linguistic aspects in translating prosaic literary works - a contemporary American novel - into Russian is dealt with. Paramount attention is focused on the most significant literary aspect - the protagonist’s figure and its characterization formulated by the author of the original as well as her peculiarities recreated and represented in the translated text. The protagonist’s main features are defined concretely on the basis of the authorial description and characterization of her appearance, behavioral, psychological and some other personal individual traits represented in detail in the original, but, however, either deliberately distorted or erroneously translated. The methodology of research is based primarily on the comparative linguistic analysis of relevant excerpts taken from the original and its published translation. Special attention is paid to the results of the performed distortions followed by the authors’ detailed commentaries and, in most cases, their own suggested versions of contextual correspondences. A strictly systematized explicit classification consisting of four types of the translation invariant’s violation, defined and exposed by the authors, will, hopefully, help systematize them while teaching translation to philology students as well as caution translators of literary prose, both beginners and advanced ones, against making mistakes of this sort in their practical creative activities.

In this short study we explore allusions to the Jacob Cycle in 1 Samuel, and the network of correspondences between Genesis 31 (Jacob fleeing from Laban, and Rachel stealing the teraphim) and 1 Samuel 19 (David fleeing from Saul, and Michal aiding his escape through teraphim). Both of these episodes feature deceptive fathers-in-law (Saul and Laban), younger daughters (Michal and Rachel), fugitive husbands (David and Jacob), and hidden idols (Michal hides the teraphim in the bed to fool Saul’s agents, and Rachel hides her father’s teraphim under her camel’s saddle). We suggest that this example of intertextuality between Genesis and Samuel has a number of theological and literary purposes.

The article is devoted to the analysis of translation techniques of English lexical colloquialisms into Ukrainian. Lexical colloquialisms are widely represented in the modern fiction that is caused by the tendency to maximal naturalness. Artistic relevance of lexical colloquialisms in a literary text (imitation and stylization of colloquial speech, characteristics of a hero, his / her attitude to the reality) proves the importance of their adequate rendering in the target text. The degree of ethical depth serves as a criterion for singling out the categories of lexical colloquialisms. The lowest degree is attributed to general colloquialisms, the highest one to vulgarisms and the medium degree to slangisms. Stylistic equivalent, descriptive translation, compensation, omission, cause and effect substitution, generalization, antonymic translation, addition are proved to be the main techniques of translating lexical colloquialisms. Significant neutralization of stylistically reduced words in the Ukrainian translation is revealed. The degree of ethical depth of a considerable number of lexical correspondences is proved to be higher than the one of the units of the original text. Decrease of expressiveness (increase of the degree of ethical depth) is extremely evident when translating vulgarisms. Euphemisation of vulgarisms is applied by the translator three times more than disphemisation. The general number of the units of the lexical colloquialisms translated with the preservation of the degree of ethical depth makes 52,6 %, while decrease of the degree of the original ethical depth amounts to 8 % and increase of the related parameter makes 39,4 %. 19,5 % of the units of the English lexical colloquialisms are not rendered into Ukrainian at all. These facts prove distortion of the speech of the main hero caused by its artificial ennoblement.

This essay discusses translation and translator choices in the context of importing a small-language poet into English-language circulation. Small-language imports play a modest but supporting role in counteracting the sort of cultural daltonism that screens any number of cultures and literatures from general global view. Taking the first English-language anthology of poetry by nineteenth-century Catalan-language poet Jacint Verdaguer (<i>Selected Poems of Jacint Verdaguer: A Bilingual Edition</i>, University of Chicago, 2007) as a case in point, the author/translator argues that if the native-culture value of poetic production is to be preserved in the new cultural and literary currency, contextual essentials (historical, social, literary) must be brought to light. Where the texts themselves are concerned, the translator of poetry must seek to re-create the form-content synthesis of the original, even as new intratextual and intertextual meanings and correspondences emerge in translation.

AbstractIn literary-critical and text historical studies of the Bible the comparison of parallel texts plays an important role. Starting from the description of the proximity of parallel texts as a continuum from very close to very loose, this article discusses the way in which the computer can facilitate a comparison of various types of parallel texts. 2 Kings 18-19 and Isaiah 37-38 are taken as an example of two closely related texts. The Kings chapters and their parallels in 2 Chronicles 32 occupy a position at the other side of the continuum. These chapters differ so much, that it is sometimes impossible to establish which verses should be considered parallel. The computer-assisted analysis brings to light some striking correspondences, that disappear in traditional synopses, such as Ben David's Parallels in the Bible. These observations have an impact on our evaluation of the Chronicler's user of his sources and his literary taste.

It interprets manuscripts not as on the margin of the Beckett corpus, but as part of the poetics of marginality central to the Beckett canon. RUL MS3000 promises to keep the "whole Dantesque analogy out of sight". Moving from the teasing promise to do so, this study will analyse the interaction between Dante's presence and absence in these Beckett manuscripts.

Abstract Although Immanuel of Rome’s Bisbidis abounds with onomatopoeic inventiveness, it has received little critical attention aside from its status as a curiosity: a dazzling poem by the only Italian Jew with extant medieval Italian lyrics. While this paper explores Immanuel’s familiarity with works by Cecco Angiolieri, Dante Alighieri, and other duecento Italian poets, it aims to demonstrate the ways in which Bisbidis embodies the medieval Hebrew-via-Arabic genre of the maqāma. After providing background on secular medieval Hebrew literature composed in the Mediterranean region and situating Immanuel’s composition in its literary-historical context, I evaluate several components – including thematic, formal, and philological correspondences – that Bisbidis shares with the Hebrew maqāma.

The article outlines the insuffi ciently studied issue «Vyacheslav Ivanov and Jakob Böhme». The goal of the research is to defi ne the sources that infl uenced Vyach. Ivanov’s theory of religious realistic symbolism. The philosophy of Vyach. Ivanov’s art is analyzed, and the contingencies between his theory and the mystic learning of Böhme and his followers concerning symbolic correspondences are highlighted.
