Resumen
The rate of movement of liquid drops toward their equilibrium position on smooth, horizontal solid surfaces (spreading kinetics) is considered in this study. A model for nonreactive liquid spreading which was developed for low-temperature liquids is applied to results for a set of high-temperature liquids and room-temperature liquids. These data were generated in a single laboratory following a consistent experimental methodology. The liquid-solid pairs were chosen to result in weak or no interfacial chemical reaction. Furnace atmospheres were chosen to provide data for liquid metals with submonolayer, thin or thick oxide films. Analysis of the high-temperature spreading kinetics for liquids covering a broad range of viscosity, surface tension, and density shows that they can be predicted with a constant shift factor applied to the deGennes expression for nonreactive spreading. The consequences of gravitational and inertial forces, substrate roughness, weak interfacial reactions, and liquid-metal oxide films are discussed.

Resumen
A novel wet process to synthesize metal oxide thin films has been developed. The process is called the Liquid-Phase Deposition (LPD) method. In this method, metal oxide or hydroxide thin films are formed on the substrate through the ligand-exchanging (hydrolysis) equilibrium reaction of metal-fluoro complex species and the F− consumption reaction of a F− scavenger. The LPD method is a unique soft solution process, and is performed by very simple procedures. In this paper, we develop a method of preparing composite oxide thin films, Pt-dispersed titanium oxide, and iron-nickel binary oxide thin films.

Perovskites and perovskite-like materials are actually of great interest since they offer a wide range of structural and physical properties giving the opportunity to employ these materials for different applications. Liquid-Delivery Metal Organic Chemical Vapour deposition (LD-MOCVD) was chosen due to the easy composition control for ternary oxides, high uniformity and good conformal step coverage. Additionally, it allows growing the films, containing elements, for which only solid or low vapour pressure precursors, having mainly thermal stability problems over long heating periods, are available. The purpose of this work was to grow SrRuO3, Bi4Ti3O12 and (Na, Bi)4Ti3O12 films by LD-MOCVD and to investigate the influence of the deposition conditions on the properties of the films. Additionally, the effect of the strain due to the lattice mismatch between substrates and films on the physical properties of the films was also investigated. SrRuO3 films were grown on stepped SrTiO3(001), NdGaO3(110) and DyScO3(110) substrates, which were prepared under different conditions by changing the annealing time and atmosphere. The termination of the substrates was measured by surface sensitive proton-induced Auger Electron Spectroscopy (p-AES) technique. Another systematic study of the relation between epitaxial strain and Curie temperature of thin SrRuO3(100) films was performed by using substrates with different lattice constants. The observed Curie temperature decreased with compressive and increased with tensile strain. Thin films of Bi4Ti3O12 as well as (Na, Bi)4Ti3O12 were successfully deposited. In order to grow stoichiometric and epitaxial Bi4Ti3O12(001) films, Bi excess in the precursor solution was necessary, due to the volatility of Bi. Substitution of Bi with Na in Bi4Ti3O12 was achieved for the first time for the films deposited by LD-MOCVD.

Resumen
AbstractThe capillary characteristics of the wicks are of great significance to the normal operation of the heat pipe, and this study carried out the wick experiment of vertical reel stainless steel wire mesh in liquid sodium working medium and the visual observation experiment of sodium film in the wire mesh wick. The experimental results show that when the temperature of liquid sodium is about 400 ℃, the capillary phenomenon of stainless steel wire mesh occurs more obviously, and after 450 ℃, the evaporation of sodium is gradually obvious and accompanied by the mass fluctuation of the wire mesh wick. The visual observation experiment of sodium liquid film in the wire mesh found that the wetting and transition point of sodium on the surface of the stainless steel wire mesh was about 410 ℃, which was a good verification of the occurrence of the more obvious capillary phenomenon of the wick at about 400 ℃.

Resumen
Organic-Inorganic composite materials (OICs) are used to describe the group of materials synthesized from polymers and inorganic metal alkkoxides. The interests in these materials arised from the need to ‘combine' the physical properties of inorganic glass materials and polymers such that the resultant OICs have the strength of the inorganic glass and flexibiliy of polymeric materials. Sol-gel technique have been the technique of choice due to much of its advantages, in particular the low temperature reaction. This is very important when natural rubber and its derivatives are used as the polymer component of the OICs. Work in our laboratory has demonstrated that OICs form liquid natural rubber (LNR) and 50% epoxidised natural rubber (ENR-50) can be prepared from various metal alkoxides, such silicon, zirconium and titanium. The OICs can be prepared as flexible transparent films, nanofibers and nanobeads. This Chapter will describe the preparation techniques and the properties of these OICs from various compositions of one and more metal alkoxides in both LNR and ENR-50. The applications of these materials in PANI will be briefly described.

Resumen
We develop a mathematical model of liquid flow and phase change phenomena during fabrication of micro- and nanochannels by laser-induced melting and evaporation of thin metal films deposited on glass substrates. Channels of cross-sectional sizes between several hundred nanometers and a few micrometers can be manufactured by wet etching or contact photolithography after the desired pattern is created by the laser in the metal film. Interaction of the laser beam with the metal film is a complicated process, characterized by high temperature gradients. In this work we investigate the regime where phase explosion takes place in a small region of the metal film surrounded by a pool of molten metal. In the melt region, both evaporation from the surface and viscous flow induced by thermocapillary stresses take place; all these processes are incorporated into the model. Evolution of the surface of the molten film is investigated, and the impact of phase explosion on the flow is discussed.

Resumen
Thin film of YSZ electrolyte is highly desired to reduce the electrical resistance in SOFCs. YSZ thin Films have been successfully produced using liquid fuel combustion chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) technique. Nucleation of the YSZ particles were investigated based on two processing parameters, i.e., substrate temperature and total-metal-concentration in the liquid fuel. An optimum substrate temperature was found for highest the nucleation density. The nucleation density was increased with the total-metal-concentration. Microstructure evolution of the YSZ particles in the early stage in film growth was also studied. It was found that the particle growth rate was linear with processing time, and the particle orientation was varying with the time in the early stage of the film processing. To enhance the film growth rate, the effect of thermophoresis was studied. By increase the temperature gradient towards substrate, the effect of thermophoresis was enhanced and the film growth is also increased.

Resumen
Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is powerful technique to study surface properties and processes in the μm- and nm-range. In-situ liquid AFM measurements were conducted to evaluate the surface degradation of two biocompatible metals: Ti as the most bio-inert (bio-stable) and Mg as the promising biodegradable metal. The pure Mg and Ti thin films were deposited using DC magnetron sputtering on glass substrates. The corrosion resistances of the samples were evaluated in in pure water and phosphate buffered saline (PBS). The results showed exponential decay of film thickness in water.

Resumen
The need for light weight, low power multicolor displays and backlights has spurred interest in thin-film, organic electroluminescent (EL) devices. A typical organic EL device consists of an indium-tin oxide anode (ITO) layer on a glass substrate, and sequential layers of bis(triphenyl)diamine (TAD, hole transporter), tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum (A1Q, electron transporter and green light-emitter), and a low work function metal cathode (e.g., Al or Mg:Ag).1 Device efficiency, stability, and spectral output can be tailored by incorporating intermediate layers of organic hole-blockers2 or blue-emitters,3 or doping A1Q with narrow spectral linewidth organic dyes.4 Cavity resonance effects have been employed in lithographically patterned optical microcavities to select single5or multiple6 colors out of broad spectrum organic emitters like A1Q. Device efficiency is a critical parameter, especially for liquid crystal display backlight applications. We will describe an approach for white light EL and an approach for enhancing device efficiency.

Resumen
Laser melting of thin metal films on a substrate is an essential step in a recently proposed technique for the fabrication of micro- and nanochannels of cross-sectional sizes varying from several hundred nanometers and a few micrometers. The metal film is electrolessly deposited on a glass substrate and then irradiated by a tightly focused laser beam. The molten material is removed from the hot region by the combined action of thermocapillary forces and evaporation. The film can then be used in subsequent manufacture steps such as wet etching or contact photolithography. We propose a mathematical model that describes laser-induced material removal from thin metal films. Our approach incorporates several important physical effects such as liquid flow in the melt, evaporation, thermocapillarity, as well as the re-solidification of the material due to heat losses into the substrate.
