The research was conducted with the aim of finding out the influence of service quality, ease of transactions and estimated value on customers' decisions to use rahn products at PT Pegadaian Syariah Sungai Liput. This type of research is quantitative, the data source used is primary data. The population and sample for this research are Rahn customers at Pegadaian Sungai Liput, totaling 1,949 people as the population, and 96 respondents as the sample in this research which was calculated based on the Slovin formula. The data obtained was analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package For Social Sciences) analysis techniques. The equation model analyzed is multiple linear regression analysis, classical assumption tests and hypothesis testing (T test, F test and coefficient of determination (R2). The research results show that partially service quality and estimated value have a significant positive effect on customers' decisions to use Rahn products, while ease of transaction has no effect on the customer's decision to use Rahn products. Simultaneously all independent variables, namely service quality, ease of transaction and estimated value together have a significant positive influence on the customer's decision to use Rahn products. Future researchers can use even more variable variables outside Variants of estimated value, costs and services influence customers' decisions to use rahn products at PT Pegadaian Sungai Liput. This is because, in this study, these three variables were only able to explain 34.1% of variations in customer decisions. This study has problem limitations. namely, the research only looks at the influence of service quality, ease of transactions, and estimated value as variables in revealing customers' decisions to use Rahn products. Resumen
Objectives. Erectile dysfunction is a major comorbidity of diabetes. Stem cell transplantation is a promising method to treat diabetic erectile dysfunction. In this study, we evaluated whether low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) could enhance the efficacy of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) and investigated the underlying molecular mechanism. Materials and methods. Sixty 8-week-old male Sprague–Dawley rats were randomly divided into the normal control (NC) cohort or the streptozocin-induced diabetic ED cohort, which was further subdivided into DM, ADSC, LIPUS, and ADSC+LIPUS groups. Rats in the ADSC or ADSC+LIPUS group received ADSC intracavernosal injection. Rats in the LIPUS or ADSC+LIPUS group were treated with LIPUS. The intracavernous pressure (ICP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were recorded at Day 28 after injection. The corpus cavernosum tissues were harvested and subjected to histologic analysis and ELISA. The effects of LIPUS on proliferation and cytokine secretion capacity of ADSCs were assessed in vitro. RNA sequencing and bioinformatic analysis were applied to predict the mechanism involved, and western blotting and ELISA were used for verification. Results. Rats in the ADSC+LIPUS group achieved significantly higher ICP and ICP/MAP ratios than those in the DM, ADSC, and LIPUS groups. In addition, the amount of cavernous endothelium and cGMP level also increased significantly in the ADSC+LIPUS group. In vitro experiments demonstrated that LIPUS promoted proliferation and cell cycle progression in ADSCs. The excretion of cytokines such as CXCL12, FGF2, and VEGF was also enhanced by LIPUS. Bioinformatic analysis based on RNA sequencing indicated that LIPUS stimulation might activate the MAPK pathway. We confirmed that LIPUS enhanced ADSC VEGF secretion through the Piezo-ERK pathway. Conclusion. LIPUS enhanced the curative effects of ADSCs on diabetic erectile dysfunction through the activation of the Piezo-ERK-VEGF pathway. ADSC transplantation combined with LIPUS could be applied as a synergistic treatment for diabetic ED.

A tanulmány Szondi Lipót sorsanalízisének szemléleti, elméleti alapjait mutatja be.

Microgravity leads to muscle loss, usually accompanied by cognitive impairment. Muscle reduction was associated with the decline of cognitive ability. Our previous studies showed that low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) promoted muscle hypertrophy and prevented muscle atrophy. This study aims to verify whether LIPUS can improve cognitive impairment by preventing muscle atrophy in hindlimb unloaded mice. In this study, mice were randomly divided into normal control (NC), hindlimb unloading (HU), hindlimb unloading + LIPUS (HU+LIPUS) groups. The mice in the HU+LIPUS group received a 30 mW/cm2 LIPUS irradiation on gastrocnemius for 20 min/d. After 21 days, LIPUS significantly prevented the decrease in muscle mass and strength caused by tail suspension. The HU+LIPUS mice showed an enhanced desire to explore unfamiliar environments and their spatial learning and memory abilities, enabling them to quickly identify differences between different objects, as well as their social discrimination abilities. MSTN is a negative regulator of muscle growth and also plays a role in regulating cognition. LIPUS significantly inhibited MSTN expression in skeletal muscle and serum and its receptor ActRIIB expression in brain, upregulated AKT and BDNF expression in brain. Taken together, LIPUS may improve the cognitive dysfunction in hindlimb unloaded rats by inhibiting muscle atrophy through MSTN/AKT/BDNF pathway.

Resumen
Objective. Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) is an important regulator of tissue growth. Previous studies have shown that low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) stimulates bone growth. The objective of this study was to evaluate the possible synergetic effect of LIPUS and local injection of nonviral bFGF plasmid DNA (pDNA) on mandibular growth in rats.Design. Groups were control, blank pDNA, bFGF pDNA, LIPUS, and bFGF pDNA + LIPUS. Treatments were performed for 28 days. Significant increase was observed in mandibular height and condylar length in LIPUS groups. MicroCT analysis showed significant increase in bone volume fraction in bFGF pDNA + LIPUS group. Histomorphometric analysis showed increased cell count and condylar proliferative and hypertrophic layers widths in bFGF pDNA group.Results. Current study showed increased mandibular condylar growth in either bFGF pDNA or LIPUS groups compared to the combined group that showed only increased bone volume fraction.Conclusion. It appears that there is an additive effect of bFGF + LIPUS on the mandibular growth.

Resumen
Various therapeutic strategies for angiogenesis are performed to improve symptoms in patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI). Pre-clinical studies have shown that low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) exposure induces angiogenesis. LIPUS may be a new stratergy for treatment of CLI. The purpose of this pilot trial was to evaluate outcomes in patients with CLI who were treated with LIPUS. Fourteen patients with CLI, who were not candidates for angioplasty or surgical revascularization, were enrolled in this study. Historical control data were obtained from the Hiroshima University PAD database. The primary endpoints were major amputation and death. The outcomes were compared in 16 lower limbs of the 14 patients with CLI who were treated with LIPUS and in 14 lower limbs of 14 patients with CLI as historical controls. All patients were followed for after 5 years after treatment with LIPUS. The mean duration of LIPUS exposure in the LIPUS group was 381± 283 days. During the 5-year follow-up periods, there were 3 major amputations and 7 deaths in the LIPUS group and there were 14 major amputations and 7 deaths in the historical control group. The overall amputation-free survival rate was significantly higher in patients who were treated with LIPUS than in historical controls. There was no significant difference between overall mortality-free survival rates in the LIPUS group and historical control group. LIPUS is a noninvasive option for therapeutic angiogenesis with the potential to reduce the incidence of major amputations in patients with CLI.

Resumen
Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) serves as a non-invasive treatment tool that reaches the lesion site in the form of ultrasound. Due to its low toxicity, low thermal effect, and low immunogenicity, LIPUS has attracted wide interest in disease treatment. It has been demonstrated that LIPUS can activate multiple signal pathways in the shape of sound wave and one of the most acknowledged downstream response components is integrin/focal adhesion kinase (FAK) complex. In recent years, the functions of LIPUS in bone regeneration, bone healing, bone mass maintenance, and cellular metabolism were found. Various oral diseases and their treatments mainly involve hard/soft tissue regeneration and reconstruction, including periodontitis, orthodontic tooth movement (OTM), dental implant, mandibular deficiency, and dentin-pulp complex injury. Thus, more and more researchers pay close attention to the application prospects of LIPUS in stomatology. We searched these articles in PubMed with keywords LIPUS, temporomandibular joint (TMJ), periodontitis, orthodontics, and pulp, then classified the retrieved literature in the past five years by disease type. In this review, the function effects and possible mechanisms of LIPUS in periodontal tissue regeneration, orthodontic treatment, implant osseointegration, TMJ bone formation/cartilage protection, and dentin-pulp complex repair after injury will be summarized. The challenges LIPUS faced and the research limitations of LIPUS will also be elucidated. Therefore, this paper intends to provide new insights into oral disease treatments, explore the optimal application specification of LIPUS, and probe the future research orientation and the prospect of LIPUS in the dental field.

Resumen
Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has been proved to promote the proliferation of myoblast C2C12. However, whether LIPUS can effectively prevent muscle atrophy has not been clarified, and if so, what is the possible mechanism. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of LIPUS on muscle atrophy in hindlimb unloading rats, and explore the mechanisms. The rats were randomly divided into four groups: normal control group (NC), hindlimb unloading group (UL), hindlimb unloading plus 30 mW/cm2 LIPUS irradiation group (UL + 30 mW/cm2), hindlimb unloading plus 80 mW/cm2 LIPUS irradiation group (UL + 80 mW/cm2). The tails of rats in hindlimb unloading group were suspended for 28 days. The rats in the LIPUS treated group were simultaneously irradiated with LIPUS on gastrocnemius muscle in both lower legs at the sound intensity of 30 mW/cm2 or 80 mW/cm2 for 20 min/d for 28 days. C2C12 cells were exposed to LIPUS at 30 or 80 mW/cm2 for 5 days. The results showed that LIPUS significantly promoted the proliferation and differentiation of myoblast C2C12, and prevented the decrease of cross-sectional area of muscle fiber and gastrocnemius mass in hindlimb unloading rats. LIPUS also significantly down regulated the expression of MSTN and its receptors ActRIIB, and up-regulated the expression of Akt and mTOR in gastrocnemius muscle of hindlimb unloading rats. In addition, three metabolic pathways (phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan biosynthesis; alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism; glycine, serine and threonine metabolism) were selected as important metabolic pathways for hindlimb unloading effect. However, LIPUS promoted the stability of alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism pathway. These results suggest that the key mechanism of LIPUS in preventing muscle atrophy induced by hindlimb unloading may be related to promoting protein synthesis through MSTN/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway and stabilizing alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism.

However, during the period of LIPUS therapy, it is undetermined whether LIPUS promotes the formation of heterotopic ossification (HO), which usually occurs in muscle tissues after trauma such as bone fracture and spinal cord injury. Here, we used 6-week LIPUS therapy in a 42-year-old Chinese male patient with a fracture nonunion in combination with ultrasonography for monitoring fracture healing and HO formation. After the LIPUS therapy, the mineralized bone formation in the area of defect of the distal tibia was presented in an ultrasound image, which was consistent with the outcome of plain radiography showing callus formation and the blurred fracture line in the area exposed to LIPUS. In addition, ultrasound images revealed no evidence of HO development within soft tissues during the period of LIPUS therapy. This study suggests that ultrasonography is a potential tool to guarantee the performance of LIPUS therapy with monitoring HO formation. Easy to use, the integration of the handheld ultrasound scanner and the ultrasonic therapeutic apparatus is entirely dedicated to help orthopedists make high-quality care and diagnosis.

Resumen
Microglia, astrocytes, and oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) may serve as targets for remyelination-enhancing therapy. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has been demonstrated to ameliorate myelin loss and inhibit neuroinflammation in animal models of brain disorders; however, the underlying mechanisms through which LIPUS stimulates remyelination and glial activation are not well-understood. This study explored the impacts of LIPUS on remyelination and resident cells following lysolecithin (LPC)-induced local demyelination in the hippocampus. Demyelination was induced by the micro-injection of 1.5 μL of 1% LPC into the rat hippocampus, and the treatment groups received daily LIPUS stimulation for 5 days. The therapeutic effects of LIPUS on LPC-induced demyelination were assessed through immunohistochemistry staining. The staining was performed to evaluate remyelination and Iba-1 staining as a microglia marker. Our data revealed that LIPUS significantly increased myelin basic protein (MBP) expression. Moreover, the IHC results showed that LIPUS significantly inhibited glial cell activation, enhanced mature oligodendrocyte density, and promoted brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression at the lesion site. In addition, a heterologous population of microglia with various morphologies can be found in the demyelination lesion after LIPUS treatment. These data show that LIPUS stimulation may serve as a potential treatment for accelerating remyelination through the attenuation of glial activation and the enhancement of mature oligodendrocyte density and BDNF production.

Resumen
Background: Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS), as a safe biophysiotherapy, can enhance bone-tendon (B-T) healing in vivo and induce osteogenic or chondrogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stromal cells in vitro. This study aimed to determine whether LIPUS can improve the efficacy of transplanted mesenchymal stromal cells on B-T healing. Hypothesis: LIPUS can induce lineage-specific differentiation of transplanted adipose-derived stromal cells (ASCs) at the B-T healing site, thus resulting in superior healing quality when compared with LIPUS or ASCs alone. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: A total of 112 mature rabbits with partial patellectomy in the hindlimb were randomly assigned into mock sonication without ASCs (control), ultrasonication without ASCs (LIPUS), mock sonication with ASCs (ASCs), and ultrasonication with ASCs (LIPUS + ASCs). The treatment time of the mock sonication or ultrasonication was 20 minutes per day. Autologous ASCs were transplanted to the healing site by fibrin glue during the operation, and LIPUS was delivered daily starting at postoperative day 3 until euthanasia. The patella–patellar tendon junctions were postoperatively harvested at 8 and 16 weeks for radiological, histological, and mechanical evaluations. Additionally, 9 animals were used for ASC tracking with mCherry protein. Results: Radiologically, there was more new bone formation and remodeling in the LIPUS + ASCs group as compared with the other groups. Synchrotron radiation micro–computed tomography showed that the LIPUS + ASCs group significantly increased bone volume fraction, trabecular thickness, and trabecular number at the healing site as compared with the other groups at postoperative 8 weeks ( P < .05 for all). Histologically, immunohistochemical staining confirmed that the transplanted mCherry-ASCs can differentiate into osteoblasts and fibrochondrocytic-like cells. Meanwhile, as compared with the other groups, the LIPUS + ASCs group showed more formation and maturity of the fibrocartilage layer and new bone at postoperative weeks 8 and 16 ( P < .05 for all). Biomechanically, the LIPUS + ASCs group showed significantly higher failure load and stiffness versus the other groups at postoperative weeks 8 and 16 ( P < .05 for all). Conclusion: Autologous ASC transplantation stimulated with LIPUS can result in superior B-T healing quality when compared with LIPUS or ASCs alone. Clinical Relevance: This study demonstrates the effectiveness of using ASC transplantation stimulated with LIPUS for B-T healing and provides a foundation for future clinical studies.

Resumen
Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) migration is promoted by low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS), but its mechanism is unclear. Since autophagy is known to regulate cell migration, our study aimed to investigate if LIPUS promotes the migration of MSCs via autophagy regulation. We also aimed to investigate the effects of intra-articular injection of MSCs following LIPUS stimulation on osteoarthritis (OA) cartilage. For the in vitro study, rat bone marrow-derived MSCs were treated with an autophagy inhibitor or agonist, and then they were stimulated by LIPUS. Migration of MSCs was detected by transwell migration assays, and stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) and C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4) protein levels were quantified. For the in vivo study, a rat knee OA model was generated and treated with LIPUS after an intra-articular injection of MSCs with autophagy inhibitor added. The cartilage repair was assessed by histopathological analysis and extracellular matrix protein expression. The in vitro results suggest that LIPUS increased the expression of SDF-1 and CXCR4, and it promoted MSC migration. These effects were inhibited and enhanced by autophagy inhibitor and agonist, respectively. The in vivo results demonstrate that LIPUS significantly enhanced the cartilage repair effects of MSCs on OA, but these effects were blocked by autophagy inhibitor. Our results suggest that the migration of MSCs was enhanced by LIPUS through the activation autophagy, and LIPUS improved the protective effect of MSCs on OA cartilage via autophagy regulation.

Resumen
Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is an emerging physical therapy for the treatment of early temporomandibular joint injury and has a good effect on promoting cartilage and subchondral bone tissue repair. However, the best LIPUS intensity and treatment duration remain unclear. This study is aimed at observing the preventive and therapeutic effects of different modes of LIPUS and at identifying the optimal LIPUS treatment regimen for temporomandibular joint injury. In the present study, rat models of temporomandibular joint injury were established using a chronic sleep deprivation (CSD) method, and the effect of LIPUS as intensities of 30, 45, and 60 mW/cm2 was observed at 7, 14, and 21 days. After CSD, the condylar cartilage of the rats demonstrated variable degrees of surface roughening, collagen fiber disarrangement or even partial exfoliation, decreased proteoglycan synthesis and cartilage thickness, decreased chondrocyte proliferation, decreased type 2 collagen (COL-2) expression, and increased matrix metalloproteinase- (MMP-) 3 expression at all three time points. When the rats with CSD received different intensities of LIPUS treatment, the pathological changes were alleviated to various extents. The groups receiving 45 mW/cm2 LIPUS showed the most significant relief of cartilage damage, and this significant effect was observed on days 14 and 21. These results demonstrated that LIPUS can effectively inhibit CSD-induced condylar cartilage damage in rats, and LIPUS treatment at an intensity of 45 mW/cm2 for at least 2 weeks is the optimal regimen for temporomandibular joint injury.

Resumen
To investigate how a back propagation neural network based on genetic algorithm (GA-BPNN) optimizes the low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) stimulation parameters to improve the bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) viability further. The LIPUS parameters were set at various frequencies (0.6, 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2 MHz), voltages (5, 6, 7, and 8 V), and stimulation durations (3, 6, and 9 minutes). As only some discrete points can be set up in the experiments, the optimal LIPUS stimulation parameter may not be in the value of these settings. The GA-BPNN algorithm is used to optimize parameters of LIPUS to increase the BMSCs viability further. The BMSCs viability of the LIPUS-treated group was improved up to 19.57% (P<0.01). With the optimization via the GA-BPNN algorithm, the viability of BMSCs was further improved by about 5.36% (P<0.01) under the optimized condition of 6.92 V, 1.02 MHz, and 7.3 min. LIPUS is able to improve the BMSCs viability, which can be improved further by LIPUS with parameter optimization via GA-BPNN algorithm.

Resumen
Background: As many researchers have focused on promoting the graft-bone healing of artificial ligaments, even with numerous chemical coatings, identifying a biosafe, effective, and immediately usable method is still important clinically. Purpose: (1) To determine whether a low-intensity pulsed ultrasound system (LIPUS) promotes in vitro cell viability and osteogenic differentiation and (2) to assess the applicability and effectiveness of LIPUS in promoting the graft-bone healing of artificial ligaments in vivo. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) sheets and grafts were randomly assigned to control and LIPUS groups. MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts were cultured on PET sheets. Cell viability and morphology were evaluated using a live/dead viability assay and scanning electron microscopy. Alkaline phosphatase activity, calcium nodule formation, and Western blot were evaluated for osteogenic differentiation. For in vivo experiments, the effect of LIPUS was evaluated via an extra-articular graft-bone healing model in 48 rabbits: the osteointegration and new bone formation were tested by micro–computed tomography and histological staining, and the graft-bone bonding was tested by biomechanical testing. Results: Cell viability was significantly higher in the LIPUS group as compared with control (living and dead compared between control and LIPUS groups, P = .0489 vs P = .0489). Better adherence of cells and greater development of extracellular matrix were observed in the LIPUS group. Furthermore, LIPUS promoted alkaline phosphatase activity, calcium nodule formation, and the protein expression of collagen 1 ( P = .0002) and osteocalcin ( P = .0006) in vitro. Micro–computed tomography revealed higher surrounding bone mass at 4 weeks and newly formed bone mass at 8 weeks in the LIPUS group ( P = .0014 and P = .0018). Histological analysis showed a narrower interface and direct graft-bone contact in the LIPUS group; the surrounding bone area at 4 weeks and the mass of newly formed bone at 4 and 8 weeks in the LIPUS group were also significantly higher as compared with control (surrounding bone, P < .0001; newly formed bone, P = .0016 at 4 weeks and P = .005 at 8 weeks). The ultimate failure load in the LIPUS group was significantly higher than in the control group ( P < .0001 at 4 weeks; P = .0008 at 8 weeks). Conclusion: LIPUS promoted the viability and osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts in vitro and enhanced the graft-bone healing of PET artificial ligament in vivo. Clinical Relevance: LIPUS is an effective physical stimulation to enhance graft-bone healing after artificial ligament implantation.

Resumen
Backgrounds We demonstrated that coronary adventitial inflammation plays important roles in the pathogenesis of drug-eluting stent (DES)-induced coronary hyperconstricting responses in pigs in vivo. However, no therapy is yet available to treat coronary adventitial inflammation. We thus developed the low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) therapy that ameliorates myocardial ischemia by enhancing angiogenesis. Aims We aimed to examine whether our LIPUS therapy suppresses DES-induced coronary hyperconstricting responses in pigs in vivo, and if so, what mechanisms are involved. Methods Sixteen normal male pigs were randomly assigned to the LIPUS or the sham therapy groups after DES implantation into the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery. In the LIPUS group, LIPUS (32 cycles, 193 mW/cm2) was applied to the heart at 3 different levels (segments proximal and distal to the stent edges and middle of the stent) for 20 min at each level for every other day for 2 weeks. The sham therapy group was treated in the same manner but without LIPUS. At 4 weeks after stent implantation, we performed coronary angiography, followed by immunohistological analysis. Results Coronary vasoconstricting responses to serotonin in LAD at DES edges were significantly suppressed in the LIPUS group compared with the sham group. Furthermore, lymph transport speed in vivo was significantly faster in the LIPUS group than in the sham group. Histological analysis at DES edges showed that inflammatory changes and Rho-kinase activity were significantly suppressed in the LIPUS group, associated with eNOS up-regulation and enhanced lymph-angiogenesis. Conclusions These results suggest that our non-invasive LIPUS therapy is useful to treat coronary functional abnormalities caused by coronary adventitial inflammation, indicating its potential for the novel and safe therapeutic approach of coronary artery disease.

Resumen
Objective: This is a systematic review of the effects of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on stem cell differentiation. Background Data: Recent studies have investigated several types of stem cells from different sources in the body. These stem cells should strictly be certified and promoted for cell therapies before being used in medical applications. LIPUS has been used extensively in treatment centers and in research to promote stem cell differentiation, function, and proliferation. Materials and Methods: The databases of PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus were searched for abstracts and full-text scientific papers published from 1989-2019 that reported the application of LIPUS on stem cell differentiation. Related English language articles were found using the following defined keywords: low-intensity pulsed ultrasound, stem cell, differentiation. Criteria for inclusion in the review were: LIPUS with frequencies of 1–3 MHz and pulsed ultrasound intensity of <500 mW/cm2. Duration, exposure time, and cell sources were taken into consideration. Results: Fifty-two articles were selected based on the inclusion criteria. Most articles demonstrated that the application of LIPUS had positive effects on stem cell differentiation. However, some authors recommended that LIPUS combined with other physical therapy aides was more effective in stem cell differentiation. Conclusions: LIPUS significantly increases the level of stem cell differentiation in cells derived mainly from bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. There is a need for further studies to analyze the effect of LIPUS on cells derived from other sources, particularly adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells, for treating hard diseases, such as osteoporosis and diabetic foot ulcer. Due to a lack of reporting on standard LIPUS parameters in the field, more experiments comparing the protocols for standardization of LIPUS parameters are needed to establish the best protocol, which would allow for the best results.

Resumen
The aim of this retrospective clinical study was to determine if there is a reduction in the overall treatment duration in orthodontic patients using low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) and Invisalign SmartTrack® clear aligners. Data were collected from the first thirty-four patients (9 males, 25 females; average age 41.37 ± 15.02) who finished their orthodontic treatment using an intraoral LIPUS device and Invisalign clear aligners in a private clinic. The LIPUS parameters used by patients at home for 20 min/day were: ultrasonic frequency 1.5 MHz, pulse duration 200µs, pulse repetition rate 1 kHz, and spatial average-temporal average intensity 30mW/cm2. A control group (11 males, 23 females; average age 31.36 ± 14.41) matching for the same malocclusions was randomly selected from finished treatment cases of the same clinician. The date of first Invisalign attachment placement and first use of LIPUS application was recorded as T0, and the date of retainer delivery was recorded as T1. The treatment duration (T1–T0) and treatment reduction percentage with LIPUS device were collected and analyzed using two-sample t-test in Microsoft Excel. Treatment duration was significantly reduced in the LIPUS group (541.44 ± 192.23 days) compared to control group (1061.05 ± 455.64 days) (p < 0.05). The LIPUS group showed on average 49% reduction in the overall treatment time as compared to the control group. The average compliance of the patients using LIPUS was 66.02%. Patients who used LIPUS showed a clinically significant reduction in the overall orthodontic treatment duration compared to the control group who used Invisalign clear aligners only.

Resumen
Abstract Aim: The aim of this study was to assess and describe the morphological effects of an intra-articular injection of Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) and/or Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound (LIPUS) stimulation on the mandibular condyles of growing rats, using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and histology. Methods: Twenty-six young (23-day-old) rats were divided into 5 groups identified as LIPUS-stimulated (20 minutes daily using 50 mW/cm2, 1MHz, 0.2 millisecond pulses), MSCs injected (1 x 105 cells/kg), LIPUS + MSCs, medium injected, and untreated controls. All treatments were performed in the left temporomandibular joint of each rat (TMJs). At day 21, CBCTs were obtained for cephalometric analysis and 3D reconstructions. After animal sacrifice, left and right TMJ sections were histologically prepared and examined. The Wilcoxon sign rank test and the Kruskal-Wallis 2 test were applied for statistical comparison. Results: Imaging results showed that left condyles were wider in all LIPUS-treated groups (p < 0.05), while the LIPUS-only group had a greater left sagittal condylar length. LIPUS-treated groups displayed a lower midline shift to the right (p < 0.02). No significant differences were observed in the MSC group. Bone marrow morphology and vascularity differed between the groups as LIPUS-treated groups exhibited increased vascularity in the erosive cartilage zone. Conclusion: It was established that LIPUS and MSC application to the TMJ region of growing rats favoured transverse condylar growth, while LIPUS application alone may enhance sagittal condylar development. The MSC injection model had little effect on sagittal condylar growth.

Resumen
Objective The present study explored whether low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) enhances the therapeutic efficacy of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in osteoarthritis (OA) cartilage repair by regulating autophagy-mediated exosome release. Design MSCs were isolated from the rat bone marrow and treated with rapamycin, 3-methyladenine, or LIPUS. The mechanism of the LIPUS-stimulated exosome release by MSCs was analyzed by inhibiting autophagy. In addition, the MSCs were co-cultured with OA chondrocytes and stimulated by LIPUS, with or without exosome release inhibitor intervention. The exosome release was detected through transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nanoparticle tracking analysis, and biomarker expression analysis. Autophagy was analyzed through TEM, autophagy-related gene expression analysis, and immunofluorescence analysis in vitro. Furthermore, a rat knee OA model was constructed and treated with MSCs, GW4869, and LIPUS. The cartilage repair was assessed through histopathological analysis and extracellular matrix protein expression analysis. Results The in vitro results indicated that LIPUS promoted MSC exosome release by activating autophagy. The in vivo results demonstrated that LIPUS significantly enhanced the positive effects of MSCs on OA cartilage. These effects were significantly blocked by GW4869, an inhibitor of exosome release. Conclusions LIPUS can enhance the therapeutic efficacy of MSCs in OA cartilage repair, and the underlying mechanism is related to the increase in autophagy-mediated exosome release.

Low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) therapy has demonstrated clinical effectiveness in achieving union in a variety of fracture situations. Few studies have investigated the effectiveness of LIPUS therapy in foot and ankle surgery. The overall rate of union in all published studies relating to the use of LIPUS in a variety of foot and ankle fracture and fusion situations is 95%. Some studies suggest lower healing rates (~ 67%) when LIPUS therapy is used to treat hindfoot fusion nonunion. A well-powered, high-quality, randomized controlled trial is needed to demonstrate the clinical and cost effectiveness of LIPUS therapy in foot and ankle surgery.

Although the digestion and absorption of lipids that are necessary for the survival of living organisms are well known in general terms, nevertheless how different lipids to be digested, how it is distributed into the bloodstream, and how to be used by the cells, are unknown issues by most non specialist people. In recent years, knowledge of lipid digestion and absorption has expanded considerably. More insight has been gained in the mechanism of action of H + pump as a transport system in fatty acid absorption. New knowledge gained on the structure-function relationship and mechanisms of action of several lipolytic enzymes in the gastrointestinal tract. This work intends to give an up to date view of lipid digestion and absorption.

Resumen
BACKGROUND The bone remodeling during orthodontic treatment for malocclusion often requires a long duration of around two to three years, which also may lead to some complications such as alveolar bone resorption or tooth root resorption. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS), a noninvasive physical therapy, has been shown to promote bone fracture healing. It is also reported that LIPUS could reduce the duration of orthodontic treatment; however, how LIPUS regulates the bone metabolism during the orthodontic treatment process is still unclear. AIM To investigate the effects of LIPUS on bone remodeling in an orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) model and explore the underlying mechanisms. METHODS A rat model of OTM was established, and alveolar bone remodeling and tooth movement rate were evaluated via micro-computed tomography and staining of tissue sections. In vitro , human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) were isolated to detect their osteogenic differentiation potential under compression and LIPUS stimulation by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, Western blot, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) staining, and Alizarin red staining. The expression of Yes-associated protein (YAP1), the actin cytoskeleton, and the Lamin A/C nucleoskeleton were detected with or without YAP1 small interfering RNA (siRNA) application via immunofluorescence. RESULTS The force treatment inhibited the osteogenic differentiation potential of hBMSCs; moreover, the expression of osteogenesis markers, such as type 1 collagen (COL1), runt-related transcription factor 2, ALP, and osteocalcin (OCN), decreased. LIPUS could rescue the osteogenic differentiation of hBMSCs with increased expression of osteogenic marker inhibited by force. Mechanically, the expression of LaminA/C, F-actin, and YAP1 was downregulated after force treatment, which could be rescued by LIPUS. Moreover, the osteogenic differentiation of hBMSCs increased by LIPUS could be attenuated by YAP siRNA treatment. Consistently, LIPUS increased alveolar bone density and decreased vertical bone absorption in vivo. The decreased expression of COL1, OCN, and YAP1 on the compression side of the alveolar bone was partially rescued by LIPUS. CONCLUSION LIPUS can accelerate tooth movement and reduce alveolar bone resorption by modulating the cytoskeleton-Lamin A/C-YAP axis, which may be a promising strategy to reduce the orthodontic treatment process.

Resumen
Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) can cause multiple sequelae and is currently incurable. Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) transplantation might provide an effective treatment method for POI. However, the clinical application of systemic MSC transplantation is limited by the low efficiency of cell homing to target tissue in vivo, including systemic MSC transplantation for POI treatment. Thus, exploration of methods to promote MSC homing is necessary. This study was to investigate the effects of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on the migration and homing of transplanted human amnion–derived MSCs (hAD-MSCs) to ovaries in rats with chemotherapy-induced POI. For LIPUS treatment, hAD-MSCs were exposed to LIPUS or sham irradiation. Chemokine receptor expressions in hAD-MSCs were detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Western blot, and immunofluorescence assays. hAD-MSC migration was detected by wound healing and transwell migration assays. Cyclophosphamide-induced POI rat models were established to evaluate the effects of LIPUS on the homing of systemically transplanted hAD-MSCs to chemotherapy-induced POI ovaries in vivo. We found that hAD-MSCs expressed chemokine receptors. The LIPUS promoted the expression of chemokine receptors, especially CXCR4, in hAD-MSCs. SDF-1 induced hAD-MSC migration. The LIPUS promoted hAD-MSC migration induced by SDF-1 through SDF-1/CXCR4 axis. SDF-1 levels significantly increased in ovaries induced by chemotherapy in POI rats. Pretreating hAD-MSCs with LIPUS increased the number of hAD-MSCs homing to ovaries in rats with chemotherapy-induced POI to some extent. However, the difference was not significant. Both hAD-MSC and LIPUS-pretreated hAD-MSC transplantation reduced ovarian injuries and improved ovarian function in rats with chemotherapy-induced POI. CXCR4 antagonist significantly reduced the number of hAD-MSCs- and LIPUS-pretreated hAD-MSCs homing to POI ovaries, and further reduced their efficacy in POI treatment. According to these findings, pretreating MSCs with LIPUS before transplantation might provide a novel, convenient, and safe technique to explore for improving the homing of systemically transplanted MSCs to target tissue.

Resumen
Dental implant restoration is the preferred choice for patients with dentition defects or edentulous patients, and obtaining stable osseointegration is the determining factor for successful implant healing. The risk of implant failure during the healing stage is still an urgent problem in clinical practice due to differences in bone quality at different implant sites and the impact of some systemic diseases on bone tissue metabolism. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is a noninvasive physical intervention method widely recognized in the treatment of bone fracture and joint damage repair. Moreover, many studies indicated that LIPUS could effectively promote the osseointegration of dental implants and improve the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). This review is aimed at investigating the research progress on the use of LIPUS in dental implant medicine from three aspects: (1) discuss the promoting effects of LIPUS on osseointegration and peri-implant bone regeneration, (2) summarize the effects and associated mechanisms of LIPUS on the biological functions of BMSCs, and (3) introduce the application and prospects of LIPUS in the clinical work of dental implantation. Although many challenges need to be overcome in the future, LIPUS is bound to be an efficient and convenient therapeutic method to improve the dental implantation success rate and expand clinical implant indications.

Resumen
The roles of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) and microRNAs (miRNAs) on hMSCs commitments have already been investigated; however, the effects of the application of their co-treatments in an in vitro cell model are still unknown. Our previous studies demonstrated that (i) LIPUS modulated hMSCs cytoskeletal organization and (ii) miRNA-675-5p have a role in HIF-1α signaling modulation during hMSCs osteoblast commitment. We investigated for the first time the role of LIPUS as promoter tool for miRNA expression. Thanks to bioinformatic analysis, we identified miR-31-5p as a LIPUS-induced miRNA and investigated its role through in vitro studies of gain and loss of function. Results highlighted that LIPUS stimulation induced a hypoxia adaptive cell response, which determines a reorganization of cell membrane and cytoskeleton proteins. MiR-31-5p gain and loss of function studies, demonstrated as miR-31-5p overexpression, were able to induce hypoxic and cytoskeletal responses. Moreover, the co-treatments LIPUS and miR-31-5p inhibitor abolished the hypoxic responses including angiogenesis and the expression of Rho family proteins. MiR-31-5p was identified as a LIPUS-mechanosensitive miRNAs and may be considered a new therapeutic option to promote or abolish hypoxic response and cytoskeletal organization on hMSCs during the bone regeneration process.

Resumen
Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects and underlying mechanisms of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced neuroinflammation. BV-2 microglia subjected to LPS administration (1 μg/mL) were treated with LIPUS stimulation. The levels of inflammatory mediators and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were quantified using the western blot. The results showed that LIPUS stimulation promoted the associated cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB)/BDNF expression in the LPS-treated microglia. Meanwhile, LIPUS treatment effectively suppressed the LPS-induced production of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, inducible nitric oxide synthase, and cyclooxygenase-2 in the microglial cells, in addition to inhibiting the LPS-induced expressions of toll-like receptor 4 and myeloid differentiation factor 88, as well as the LPS-induced activation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase and nuclear factor kappa B. Furthermore, LIPUS significantly decreased the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio in the microglia following LPS treatment. Our data indicated that LIPUS attenuated the proinflammatory responses as well as the decline in BDNF in LPS-treated microglia. This study provides a better understanding of how LIPUS stimulation regulates anti-inflammatory actions in microglia, providing further evidence suggesting that such stimulation may be regarded as a novel strategy for the treatment of neuroinflammation.

Resumen
The estimated morbidity rate of chronic kidney disease is 8% to 16% worldwide, and many patients with chronic kidney disease eventually develop renal failure. Thus, the development of new therapeutic strategies for preventing renal failure is crucial. In this study, we assessed the effects of daily low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) therapy on experimental hypertensive nephropathy and diabetic nephropathy. Unilateral nephrectomy and subcutaneous infusion of angiotensin II via osmotic mini-pumps were used to induce hypertensive nephropathy in mice. Immunohistochemistry revealed that daily LIPUS treatment ameliorated renal fibrosis and infiltration of inflammatory cells induced by angiotensin II. A similar therapeutic effect was also observed in mice with angiotensin II-induced hypertensive nephropathy in which splenectomy was performed. In addition, LIPUS treatment significantly decreased systolic blood pressure after 21 days. Subsequently, db/db mice with unilateral nephrectomy developed proteinuria; daily LIPUS treatment significantly reduced proteinuria after 42 days. In addition, immunohistochemistry revealed that renal fibrosis was significantly ameliorated by LIPUS treatment. Finally, LIPUS stimulation suppressed TGF-β1 (transforming growth factor-β1)-induced phosphorylation of Smad2 and Smad3 in HK-2 (human proximal tubular cell line) cells. LIPUS treatment may be a useful therapy for preventing the progression of renal fibrosis in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Resumen
The incidence of stroke recurrence is still higher despite the advanced progression of therapeutic treatment and medical technology. Low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has been demonstrated to possess therapeutic effects on neuronal diseases and stroke via brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) induction. In this study, we hypothesized that LIPUS treatment possessed therapeutic benefits for the improvement of stroke recurrence. Adult male C57BL/6J mice were subjected to a middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) surgery and then followed to secondary MCAO surgery as a stroke recurrence occurred after nine days from the first MCAO. LIPUS was administered continuously for nine days before secondary MCAO. LIPUS treatment not only decreased the mortality but also significantly moderated neuronal function injury including neurological score, motor activity, and brain pathological score in the recurrent stroke mice. Furthermore, the administration of LIPUS attenuated the apoptotic neuronal cells and increased Bax/Bcl-2 protein expression ratio and accelerated the expression of BDNF in the brain of the recurrent stroke mice. Taken together, these results demonstrate for the first time that LIPUS treatment arouses the expression of BDNF and possesses a therapeutic benefit for the improvement of stroke recurrence in a mouse model. The neuroprotective potential of LIPUS may provide a useful strategy for the prevention of a recurrent stroke.

Resumen
Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS), a therapeutic type of ultrasound, is known to enhance bone fracture repair processes and help some tissues to heal. Here, we investigated the therapeutic potential of LIPUS for the treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in two CKD mouse models. CKD mice were induced using both unilateral renal ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) with nephrectomy and adenine administration. The left kidneys of the CKD mice were treated using LIPUS with the parameters of 3 MHz, 100 mW/cm2, and 20 min/day, based on the preliminary experiments. The mice were euthanized 14 days after IRI or 28 days after the end of adenine administration. LIPUS treatment effectively alleviated the decreases in the body weight and albumin/globulin ratio and the increases in the serum renal functional markers, fibroblast growth factor-23, renal pathological changes, and renal fibrosis in the CKD mice. The parameters for epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT), senescence-related signal induction, and the inhibition of α-Klotho and endogenous antioxidant enzyme protein expression in the kidneys of the CKD mice were also significantly alleviated by LIPUS. These results suggest that LIPUS treatment reduces CKD progression through the inhibition of EMT and senescence-related signals. The application of LIPUS may be an alternative non-invasive therapeutic intervention for CKD therapy.

Resumen
Systemic inflammation is associated with intestinal inflammation and neuroinflammation by imbalancing the gut–brain axis. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects. This study explored LIPUS’s neuroprotective effects against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced neuroinflammation through transabdominal stimulation. Male C57BL/6J mice were intraperitoneally injected with LPS (0.75 mg/kg) daily for seven days, and abdominal LIPUS was applied to the abdominal area for 15 min/day during the last six days. One day after the last LIPUS treatment, biological samples were collected for microscopic and immunohistochemical analysis. Histological examination showed that LPS administration leads to tissue damage in the colon and brain. Transabdominal LIPUS stimulation attenuated colonic damage, reducing histological score, colonic muscle thickness, and villi shortening. Furthermore, abdominal LIPUS reduced hippocampal microglial activation (labeled by ionized calcium-binding adaptor molecule-1 [Iba-1]) and neuronal cell loss (labeled by microtubule-associated protein 2 [MAP2]). Moreover, abdominal LIPUS attenuated the number of apoptotic cells in the hippocampus and cortex. Altogether, our results indicate that abdominal LIPUS stimulation attenuates LPS-induced colonic inflammation and neuroinflammation. These findings provide new insights into the treatment strategy for neuroinflammation-related brain disorders and may facilitate method development through the gut–brain axis pathway.

Resumen
Postoperative neurocognitive impairment is an urgent problem with global aging accelerating. The prevention and treatment of postoperative neurocognitive impairment have been widely investigated but lack effective strategies. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS), a non-invasive tool, has shown an effect on neuroprotection, but whether it could attenuate the postoperative neurocognitive impairment and the underlying mechanisms remains unknown. An experimental setup for LIPUS stimulation of the hippocampus was well established. A laparotomy model in aged mice was applied, and a Morris water maze was used to assess cognitive function. RT-qPCR and western blotting were used to detect levels of Piezo1, synapse-associated proteins in the hippocampus, respectively. Immunofluorescent staining was also used to determine the neural activation and Piezo1 expression. The results showed that LIPUS increased synapse-related proteins of the hippocampus and attenuated cognitive impairment in aged mice. Meanwhile, LIPUS suppressed the overexpression of Piezo1 in the hippocampus. We further found that LIPUS promoted Calpain1 activity and increased extracellular regulated protein kinases (Erk) phosphorylation. Our results suggested that LIPUS could improve cognitive impairment and increase hippocampal synaptogenesis through the Piezo1-mediated Calpain1/ Erk pathway. LIPUS could be used as an effective physical intervention to alleviate postoperative cognitive dysfunction in the aged population.
