Resumen
Although neglected for decades, American poet, journalist, and painter Nicholas Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931) made a significant contribution to the rising film theory with his book The Art of The Moving Picture, the first American study of a kind, published in 1915. Having noticed the widespread popularity of silent movies among the millions of film lovers in the USA, Lindsay proposed that this new visual art form, which, according to him, represented a combination of a traditional theatre play and diverse elements of painting, sculpture, architecture and other forms of visual expression that he called photoplay, could, in due time, become a truly American art brand. For that reason, he advocated the establishment of film schools, film libraries and archives, as well as the use of film for educational purposes in schools. This paper analyzes Lindsay’s key theoretical tenets of film as an important fine art as presented in his book The Art of The Moving Picture, as well as his visionary predictions regarding the later development of film (and later television) as not just lucrative, commercial products, but also an interesting field of academic study.

Resumen
The four plays reviewed here concern First Nations characters who wrestle with conflicting identities. All of the plays succeed in challenging what Robert Appleford calls the “limiting definitions of the authentically Native” (71) by shifting Native discourse and creating a unique hybrid identity. Darrell Dennis’s two plays focus on young urban Aboriginals who struggle to have their own distinctive Native voice in an environment that expects them to behave in a stereotypical, traditional “Indian” way. The characters struggle to balance the tension between their urban identity and their Native heritage. The plays by Penny Gummerson and Constance Lindsay Skinner concern characters who attempt to find a synthesis of their interracialness once they discover they arc part Native.

Resumen
David Gill was an outstanding astronomer over several decades at the end of the nineteenth and into the early twentieth century. He was famous for his observational accuracy, for his painstaking attention to detail, and for his hands-on knowledge of the fine points of astronomical instrumentation. Astronomy, though, was a second professional career for David Gill. This account maps out the surprising and unusual path of David Gill’s life before he became Her Majesty’s Astronomer at the Cape of Good Hope. It covers aspects of his education, his horological career, his employment by Lord Lindsay to oversee the Dunecht observatory, his personal expedition to Ascension Island and his appointment as Her Majesty’s Astronomer at the age of 34. The account includes local detail and images not found in the main biography of David Gill. It ends with some detail of Gill’s continuing interest in clocks after his appointment.

Resumen
Saving money and time are very important in any research project, so we must find a way to decrease the time of the experiment. This method is called the accelerated life tests (ALT) under censored samples, which is a very efficient method to reduce time, which leads to a decrease in the cost of the experiment. This research project includes inference on Lindley distribution in a simple step-stress ALT for the Type II progressive censored sample. The paper contains two major sections, which are a simulation study and a real-data application on the experimental design of an industry experiment on lamps. These sections are used to conduct results on the study of the distribution. The simulation was done using Mathematica 11 program. To use real data in the censored sample, we fitted them to be compatible with the Lindley distribution using the modified Kolmogorov–Smirnov (KS) goodness of fit test for progressive Type II censored data. We used the tampered random variable (TRV) acceleration model to generate early failures of items under stress. We also found the values of the distribution parameter and the accelerating factor using the maximum likelihood estimation of (MLEs) and Bayes estimates (BEs) using symmetric loss function for both simulated data and real data. Next, we estimated the upper and lower bounds of the parameters using three methods, namely approximate confidence intervals (CIs), Bootstrap CIs, and credible CIs, for both parameters of the distribution, ψ and ζ. Finally, we found the value of the parameter for the real data set under normal use conditions and stress conditions and graphed the reliability functions under normal and accelerated use.

Resumen
Statement of the problem. The historical context of the influence of trombone players on the performance style of European schools has not yet been studied despite the widespread use of method books “The schools of trombone playing” by all musicians, from amateurs to professionals. However, in the past, leading teachers and methodologists mainly from conservatories presented the performance trends of that time and developed new ones in their works, which guided the further development of the future generations’ performers. Recent research and publications. The issue of method books and their influence on European trombone schools was actively studied at the end of the 20th century (Guion, 1988; Lapie, 1995; Weiner, 1993, 1995, 1999 a, b). In this context, an important place belongs to the article “Slide trombone training and method books in France (1794–1960)” (Sluchin & Lapie, 1997), which contains a lot of information about method books of that period, the evolution of European trombone schools, the contribution of method books authors to the development of trombone playing in the nineteenth century and a detailed analysis of the most influential authors. The most significant recent works are dissertations that examine the history of the Paris Conservatory, the creativity of prominent trombone teachers and their works on methodology (Velázquez, 2019; Carlson, 2015). Ukrainian researchers have not studied this issue yet. The purpose of the article is to study the influence of the method books “The schools of trombone playing” on European trombone art. Research methodology. The focus of the research is to study the most famous and innovative method books of the nineteenth century. The article applies the historical and chronological approach as the leading one in the study and organization of the research material; comparative approach to find the main differences between these “schools”; systematic and analytical approach to identify the most significant differences and their influence on the development of trombone mastery; historical and cultural approach to study the process of formation of national European trombone schools. The novelty of the study is manifested in the chronological classification of all known trombone schools in the nineteenth century and a detailed analysis of the most influential ones. Results and conclusion. Having analyzes the most significant European schools of trombone playing from the very first work by A. Brown, written in 1794, to the work by J. B. Arban, we have traced the process of historical development of the technical skills of musicians and identified the sources of the European method of trombone performance. In this context, the role of France is revealed as outstanding, because the first trombone class opened at the Paris Conservatory led to the emergence of the first original “school of playing”. This was followed by a whole cascade of similar works, first in France and then in other European countries. During the nineteenth century, thanks to the aforementioned method books and the Paris Conservatory, the French had a constellation of trombone players, including: Leo Arnaud, Michel Becquet, Henri Couillaud, Paul Deliss, AntoineDieppo, VincoGlobokar, AndréLafosse, DanielLassalle, JacquesMédecin, Fabrice Millischer, Nicolas Moutier, Jérôme Naulais, Alfred Alexandre Quentin, and many others. After the French success, Germany took the initiative and, thanks to the work of Franz-Josef Fröhlich, created its own school of tromboneplaying with a large number of performers, such as Friedrich August Bellecke, Johannes Culottes, Karl Traugott Queisser, Friedrich Schenker, and Paul Weschke. Thanks to A. Wirth, in the 1870s, a British method of trombone playing emerged, and hence a number of British performers of the XIX–XX centuries, including Byron Fulcher, Lance Green, Gustav Holst, Chris Houlding, Lindsay Schilling, John Kenny, Dave Stewart, and Roger Argente.

Resumen
Abstract. In recent years wildland fires in the United States have had significant impacts on local and regional air quality and negative human health outcomes. Although the primary health concerns from wildland fires come from fine particulate matter (PM2.5), large increases in ozone (O3) have been observed downwind of wildland fire plumes (DeBell et al., 2004; Bytnerowicz et al., 2010; Preisler et al., 2010; Jaffe et al., 2012; Bytnerowicz et al., 2013; Jaffe et al., 2013; Lu et al., 2016; Lindaas et al., 2017; McClure and Jaffe, 2018; Liu et al., 2018; Baylon et al., 2018; Buysse et al., 2019). Conditions generated in and around wildland fire plumes, including the presence of interfering chemical species, can make the accurate measurement of O3 concentrations using the ultraviolet (UV) photometric method challenging if not impossible. UV photometric method instruments are prone to interferences by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are present at high concentrations in wildland fire smoke. Four different O3 measurement methodologies were deployed in a mobile sampling platform downwind of active prescribed grassland fire lines in Kansas and Oregon and during controlled chamber burns at the United States Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station Fire Sciences Laboratory in Missoula, Montana. We demonstrate that the Federal Reference Method (FRM) nitric oxide (NO) chemiluminescence monitors and Federal Equivalent Method (FEM) gas-phase (NO) chemical scrubber UV photometric O3 monitors are relatively interference-free, even in near-field combustion plumes. In contrast, FEM UV photometric O3 monitors using solid-phase catalytic scrubbers show positive artifacts that are positively correlated with carbon monoxide (CO) and total gas-phase hydrocarbon (THC), two indicator species of biomass burning. Of the two catalytic scrubber UV photometric methods evaluated, the instruments that included a Nafion® tube dryer in the sample introduction system had artifacts an order of magnitude smaller than the instrument with no humidity correction. We hypothesize that Nafion®-permeating VOCs (such as aromatic hydrocarbons) could be a significant source of interference for catalytic scrubber UV photometric O3 monitors and that the inclusion of a Nafion® tube dryer assists with the mitigation of these interferences. The chemiluminescence FRM method is highly recommended for accurate measurements of O3 in wildland fire plume studies and at regulatory ambient monitoring sites frequently impacted by wildland fire smoke.

Resumen
Abstract Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of gynecological cancer-related deaths. The propensity for metastasis within the peritoneal cavity is a driving factor for the poor outcomes associated with this disease, but there is currently no effective therapy targeting metastasis. In this study we investigate the contribution of stromal cells to ovarian cancer metastasis and identify normal stromal cell expression of the collagen receptor, Discoidin Domain Receptor 2 (DDR2), that acts to facilitate ovarian cancer metastasis. In vivo, global genetic inactivation of Ddr2 impairs the ability of Ddr2-expressing syngeneic ovarian cancer cells to spread throughout the peritoneal cavity. Therefore, we wanted to further investigate how various DDR2-expressing stromal cells may individually be contributing to ovarian cancer metastasis. First, we investigated mesothelial cells, as these are one of the first cell types that ovarian cancer cells interact with during metastasis. We find that DDR2 expression in mesothelial cells lining the peritoneal cavity facilitates tumor cell attachment and clearance. To examine the contribution of DDR2 expression in mesothelial cells in vivo, we have generated and validated a mouse model in which Ddr2 is specifically knocked out in mesothelial cells. We have ongoing experiments to determine whether inhibition of DDR2 in just mesothelial cells decreases ovarian tumor cell attachment and tumor burden in a syngeneic model. Following interaction with mesothelial cells, metastatic tumor cells contact fibroblasts. We find that omentum fibroblast expression of DDR2 promotes tumor cell invasion. Mechanistically, DDR2-expressing fibroblasts are more energetically active, such that DDR2 regulates glycolysis through AKT/SNAI1 leading to suppressed fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase and increased hexokinase activity, a key glycolytic enzyme. Upon inhibition of DDR2 we find decreased protein synthesis and secretion. Consequently, when DDR2 is inhibited in fibroblasts, there is reduction in secreted extracellular matrix proteins important for metastasis. Specifically, we find that fibroblast DDR2 inhibition leads to decreased secretion of the collagen crosslinker, LOXL2. Adding back LOXL2 to DDR2 deficient fibroblasts rescues the ability of tumor cells to invade. Overall, our results suggest that stromal cell expression of DDR2 is an important mediator of ovarian cancer metastasis. Resumen
Abstract Urothelial carcinoma (UC) presents most frequently as bladder cancer and is the most common cancer of the urinary system in the United States. UC relapse and progression are common and impose a significant negative impact on the lives of patients and healthcare resources. To elucidate the biological mechanisms of UC and find novel biomarkers, we analyzed the clinical and genomic data in the Oncology Research Information Exchange Network (ORIEN). We conducted gene-based and gene-set based association tests on rare germline variants comparing the exome sequencing of 336 UC patients and genome sequencing of 366 healthy controls (42 unrelated individuals from the Centre d'Etudes du Polymorphisme Humain [CEPH] families and 324 from the University of Utah Heritage 1000 [H1K] Projects). The analysis of loss-of-function (LoF) variants revealed that the forkhead box (FOX) J2 gene set was significantly associated with UC at the genome-wide level (Bonferroni-corrected p-value=0.01). Genes in this gene set contain a motif that matches the FOXJ2 transcription factor binding site. Firth-penalized Cox proportional hazard regression on overall survival identified LoF variants in genes down-regulated in naive CD8 T cells to be associated with worse prognosis (Bonferroni-corrected p-value=0.032, hazard ratio=28.2, and 95% confidence interval 6.66 to 119.0). In exome sequencing of tumor tissues, we searched for driver genes and pathways by testing for higher variant allelic fractions than the genome average. The tests yielded eleven genes with genome-wide significance (Table 1). By gene set analysis using the MSigDB Hallmark database, significant pathways included the P53 pathway (p<2 × 10−16), Wnt beta-catenin signaling (p<2 × 10−16), E2F targets (p=8 × 10−13), PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling (4 × 10−7), and apoptosis (p=9 × 10−7). These results reveal the germline predisposition variants and somatic oncogenic drivers in UC and suggest immune evasion as a contributing factor for poor clinical outcomes in UC patients. Table 1. Resumen
The selective hydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes is a crucial step in the synthesis of fine chemicals. However, the widely utilized Palladium (Pd)‐based catalysts often suffer from poor selectivity. In this work, we demonstrate a carbonization‐reduction method to create palladium carbide subnanometric species within pure silicate MFI zeolite. The carbon species can modify the electronic and steric characteristics of Pd species by forming the predominant Pd‐C4 structure and, meanwhile, facilitate the desorption of alkenes by forming the Si‐O‐C structure with zeolite framework, as validated by the state‐of‐the‐art characterizations and theoretical calculations. The developed catalyst shows superior performance in the selective hydrogenation of alkynes over mild conditions (298 K, 2 bar H2), with 99% selectivity to styrene at a complete conversion of phenylacetylene. In contrast, the zeolite‐encapsulated carbon‐free Pd catalyst and the commercial Lindlar catalyst show only 15% and 14% selectivity to styrene, respectively, under identical reaction conditions. The zeolite‐confined Pd‐carbide subnanoclusters promise their superior properties in semihydrogenation of alkynes.

Rome, Amy. "The voice embodied : a practice-based investigation through the Praxes of Noah Pikes, Enrique Pardo, and Linda Wise". Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 2007. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/18915/.

Resumen
What is the voice embodied? How is it possible to understand the voice as a gesture: a movement perceived as body? What are the creative processes of expressing voice? An interdisciplinary study into the artistic training and performance of voice, the aim of this thesis is to explore these research questions by examining three contemporary voice practitioners in conjunction with my practice. The practitioners, Noah Pikes, Enrique Pardo, and Linda Wise, are original members from the Roy Hart Theatre (1969-1990). Founded in the 1960s on the pioneering work of the German musician and voice teacher Alfred Wolfsohn (1896-1962), Roy Hart and the Roy Hart Theatre extended Wolfsohn's distinctive interdisciplinary approach to voice training within theatre practice. This investigation brings together the practices of Pikes, Pardo, and Wise for the first time to explore a lineage of Wolfsohn and Hart's work. Examining the practitioners' interdisciplinary methodological approaches to voice training and performance, the research reveals how these original members of the Roy Hart Theatre are challenging conventional methodologies to the way in which the voice of the actor-singer-dancer is trained through practice. My interaction with these international practitioners and their practices produced primary documentary evidence in the form of video footage and interviews. This primary research material presented within the thesis, was filmed in the artists' studios in London, Zurich and Paris over a five-year period, and provides rare experiential insights into these contemporary interdisciplinary approaches to training voice and performance in multicultural professional workshop settings. In addition, the thesis contains DVD recordings of the documentary: 'The Whole Voice' (2002) detailing Pikes' praxis, and my contemporary solo theatre performance: 'The Badlands' (2004). Demonstrating elements of the practices central to my investigation, the performance of the 'The Badlands' should be viewed as one example in practice, of how the ideas explored in the thesis might be realized. Whilst the study of artistically training and performing voice is a practical endeavour, pedagogically the practice poses a number of complex theoretical questions concerning the nature of how the integral brain/body is experienced. My research endeavours to bring theory and practice together. It reveals variations in the practitioners' praxes, including a shift from Wolfsohn, who drew directly from the psychological theories espoused by C.G Jung, to Post-Jungian perspectives. The study explores the significance of this development, placing a particular emphasis upon how agency and the imagination are conceived in practice. Exploring beyond the fundamental Jungian and post-Jungian psychological theoretical frameworks underpinning the practices central to this study, I propose through my practice to examine the significance of extending Wolfsohn's original ideas about the voice embodied from an existential phenomenological line of thought and the parallels this philosophy shares with more recent research stemming from neuroscience.

This chapter details Now Eleanor's Idea (1985–94). The five-and-a-half-hour tetralogy represents the conclusion of the American adventure, of Ashley's “history of our consciousness as Americans.” Now Eleanor's Idea, with its four symmetrical parts, embodies the great coming together in the Los Angeles of the future, with fragmented identities that need to be reconstituted. The tetralogy could be called Ashley's magnum opus, a mammoth continuum. Its operas—Improvement: Don Leaves Linda, eL/Aficionado, Foreign Experiences, and (the “title opera”) Now Eleanor's Idea—are clearly differentiated by style and density, and the chapter elaborates on each of these in turn. The chapter also introduces two more members of Ashley's ensemble: singer Joan La Barbara and recording engineer Tom Hamilton.

Resumen
Children´s Rights – A Handbook for practioners, ed. by Ingo Richter, Lothar Krappmann and Friederike Wapler. More than twenty years ago, the UN adopted the International Convention on the Rights of the Child. And, finally, after more than twenty years of public dispute, in 2018 the German government decided to incorporate the rights of children into the country’s constitution. But what are children´s rights? What does the UN Convention mean by children´s rights? Have they been implemented in Germany in the past, and how will they look in the future? In this handbook, fifteen legal experts from different fields, such as the family, education, work, the media, migration, data protection, criminality etc., try to find an encompassing answer to these questions. The book has been written for lawyers and social scientists, particularly for those who have to deal with these rights in their everyday work, so that they know how to implement them in the future. With contributions by Hans-Jörg Albrecht | Hans-Peter Füssel | Lothar Krappmann | Gabriele Kuhn-Zuber | Roman Lehner | Thomas Mörsberger | Ingo Richter | Stephan Rixen | Kirsten Scheiwe | Sebastian Schiller | Stefanie Schmahl | Daniela Schweigler | Friederike Wapler | Reinhard Wiesner | Linda Zaiane

Resumen
Showing informants in a variety of contexts provides a broader picture of them, and highlights the potential pitfalls associated with their use within our criminal justice system. Police depend on insiders to prosecute the perpetrators of many of the so-called victimless crimes like drug dealing, money laundering and political corruption. As victimless crimes have grown, so has the use of informants. Providing insights into law enforcement techniques as well as the Court's response to them, Bloom illuminates the pernicious legal ramifications that can result from the justice system's relationship to and use of informers. Law professors, criminologists, and law enforcement scholars will find Bloom's account of this much used and abused but under-reported aspect of America's law enforcement efforts both edifying and sobering. There are different kinds of informants. Some are used to infiltrate and destroy organized crime operations, and others, such as Linda Tripp, are used to investigate government officials. Informants are motivated by a variety of reasons, including financial gain, political power, elimination of competition, and avoiding criminal punishment. Some are even imaginary, fabricated by police to justify their activity. Bloom discusses each type of informer, grounding his commentary in real cases, some well known, others obscure. He then concludes by suggesting how potential and real abuses of the informant system can be curbed.

Resumen
Learn how to integrate pop culture and technology into school library programs and classrooms, and make today's digital content, mobile devices, and students' changing interests work to the educator's advantage. Today's school libraries need to evolve and meet the needs of 21st-century students—the instruction, programming, and library services must be relevant to today's learners. Additionally, the interactions between educators and the students are what make the critical difference in the students' learning, and turn the library and classroom into places where they will find, assimilate, experience, and understand information. This book provides practical strategies for using pop culture and technology trends to connect with easily distracted middle and high school students and hold their attention. Author Linda D. Behen addresses why school libraries are in transition and why there is a need for dramatic change. She discusses the evolution of all libraries in response to digital content; ubiquitous mobile devices such as smart phones, iPads, and other tablet computers; patrons' changing interests; and the ways in which schools and school libraries have found to effectively adapt to technology changes and student needs. This book is essential for middle and high school librarians and educators, library school students and instructors, and young adult public librarians.

Resumen
The idea of the fourth dimension of space has been of sustained interest to nineteenth-century and Modernist studies since the publication of Linda Dalrymple Henderson’s The Fourth Dimension and Non-Euclidean Geometry in Modern Art (1983). An idea from mathematics that was appropriated by occultist thought, it emerged in the fin de siècle as a staple of genre fiction and grew to become an informing idea for a number of important Modernist writers and artists. Describing the post-Euclidean intellectual landscape of the late nineteenth century, The Emergence of the Fourth Dimension works with the concepts derived from the mathematical possibilities of n-dimensional geometry—co-presence, bi-location, and interpenetration; the experiences of two consciousnesses sharing the same space, one consciousness being in two spaces, and objects and consciousness pervading each other—to examine how a crucially transformative idea in the cultural history of space was thought and to consider the forms in which such thought was anchored. It identifies a corpus of higher-dimensional fictions by Conrad and Ford, H.G. Wells, Henry James, H.P. Lovecraft, and others and reads these closely to understand how fin de siècle and early twentieth-century literature shaped and were in turn shaped by the reconfiguration of imaginative space occasioned by the n-dimensional turn. In so doing it traces the intellectual history of higher-dimensional thought into diverse terrains, describing spiritualist experiments and how an extended abstract space functioned as an analogue for global space in occult groupings such as the Theosophical Society.

Resumen
During the 1950s and 1960s, jazz music became solidly entrenched in America’s institutions of high art patronage as the music’s most prestigious venues shifted from popular clubs and ballrooms to concert halls and upscale summer festivals, most notably the Newport Jazz Festival. While for most professional jazz dancers, this period marked a time when the work “dried up,” there were several lindy hop and rhythm tap dancers who managed to access these spaces through their relationships with jazz historian Marshall Stearns. Stearns was a key player in the adoption of jazz history as an academic subject and an advocate for the serious study of Black vernacular dance. This chapter asks why Stearns’s efforts to “legitimize” and institutionalize jazz dance largely failed, given that his similar advocacy for jazz music clearly succeeded. It argues that Stearns’s folkloric conceptualization of “vernacular jazz dance” fell short of the successful “consensus narrative” he built for jazz music in that concertized adaptations of Black vernacular dance practices by choreographers such as Katherine Dunham and Alvin Ailey were not legible to Stearns as contiguous extensions of the traditional folk and popular dance forms he problematically fetishized as dying folk art in need of preservation. The discursive barrier Stearns built between the worlds of vernacular and concert dance, while intended to safeguard from cultural appropriation so-called authentic or vernacular jazz dance forms, ultimately reinforced primitivist narratives that discursively foreclosed many possibilities for dance as a vital creative partner in jazz music’s present or future.

Resumen
As open systems persist, garbage collection (GC) can be a vital aspect in managing system resources. Although garbage collection has been proposed for the standard Linda, it was a rather course-grained mechanism. This finer-grained method is offered in Lindacap, a capability-based coordination system for open distributed systems. Multicapabilities in Lindacap enable tuples to be uniquely referenced, thus providing sufficient information on the usability of tuples (data) within the tuple-space. This paper describes the garbage collection mechanism deployed in Lindacap, which involves selectively garbage collecting tuples within tuple-spaces. The authors present the approach using reference counting, followed by the tracing (mark-and-sweep) algorithm to garbage collect cyclic structures. A time-to-idle (TTI) technique is also proposed, which allows for garbage collection of multicapability regions that are being referred to by agents but are not used in a specified length of time. The performance results indicate that the incorporation of garbage collection techniques adds little overhead to the overall performance of the system. The difference between the average overhead caused by the mark-and-sweep and reference counting is small, and can be considered insignificant if the benefits brought by the mark-and-sweep is taken into account.

Resumen
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien's fantasy novel for children, The Hobbit, has always been regarded as a canonical work of art by the literary critics. The journey through Middle-earth has flourished with this novel and paved the way for his other canonical trilogy, The Lord of Rings. The novel has also been adapted for the cinema by the director, Peter Jackson with a series of three fantasy films. Whereas Tolkien has actually written the novel for children, Jackson has filmed the trilogy for the adults. Right along with this different aim on the target audience between Tolkien and Jackson, there are also numerous differences and changes between the novel and the film series. Thus, the purpose of this study is to compare J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again (1937) with Peter Jackson's film series, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) in terms of the journey, the fellowship and the space based on Linda Hutcheon's adaptation theory.

Resumen
This chapter uses the 1791 trial of Pedro Dionisio Muñoz de Carballo to analyze the intersection of racism, racialization, and the artistic sphere as well as details of art production in Cuba during the late eighteenth century. Muñoz de Carballo, a free man of color and owner of a painting supply shop in Havana, was accused of selling lethal substances. This case took place during a period of great racial conflict. After the Haitian Revolution, fears of slave revolts increased. Black Cubans dominated the art sphere, and this caused racial anxiety. The case against Muñoz de Carballo was intended to ensure order and to exclude Blacks from Cuba’s art world. Art was marshaled as an effective tool to justify the political economy of slavery built upon white supremacy. Royal authorities used strategies such as the development of an aesthetic of good taste, the establishment of a fine arts academy, and the organization of artists into guilds. These measures ensured a rigid hierarchy that served as a glass ceiling for Blacks and mulatos. Linda Marie Rodriguez not only discusses art and race, but offers a clear picture of the material culture related to art in Cuba around 1800.

Resumen
Much of this chapter focuses on the melodramatic genre and its application in contemporary extreme cinema. Melodrama typically involves loss, and/or a character that arrives too late. In Linda Williams’s notion of the “body genres,” these are films designed to elicit tears, and they frequently revolve around family. However, these are narrative concerns and therefore speak to emotions—particularly sadness. Extreme Cinema attempts to demonstrate how contemporary practices might embellish emotive narrative content with affecting cinematic techniques. Lars von Trier’s 2009 film Antichrist, for instance, is about the death of a child and how the parents of the deceased child negotiate their grief, anger, and guilt. Von Trier visualizes the overwhelming anxiety and suffering by means of hyper-stylization—exaggerated colours and lighting, audio design, slow-motion, rapid-fire editing, extreme close-ups, etc. Also discussed is the work of Japanese filmmaker Shion Sono, particularly his films Strange Circus and Why don’t you play in hell?.

Resumen
Abstract In “Cancer? I’ve Had It!” Rodgers encourages millions of This Week readers that detection can often lead to a full cure. Rodgers relates how a pain in his jaw led to tests and the removal of a portion of one jaw and numerous lymph nodes, and how with mild medication he was able to appear on television, rehearse and write additional material for a new show (Pipe Dream), fly to California to attend “a lot of very fine parties; and visit his daughter Linda had no physical difficulties to overcome in doing a job for which a much younger man should have gone into training; nor were there any aftereffects except a feeling of great exhilaration and accomplishment. Though we recognize our attitude is illogical, many of us are reluctant to admit that we have had cancer, even if there has been a complete cure. Most of us seem to feel that there is some sort of stigma attached to the disorder, almost as though it were a so-called social disease. Why this should be, no one seems to know and the doctors themselves seem baffled by what can only be called a phenomenon of unreason. Reason or no, the net result is that we hear very little from the patient or his family about the cure and only learn of the disaster. The “net-net” result is more fear and less chance of cure. Frankness on a social level could be enormously helpful, and publications, such as this one, could aid greatly by demonstrating that the opposite side of the coin need not always be black. I am not fatuous enough to believe that everyone who develops cancer can be as fortunate as I have been, but it cannot be denied that my expirience stands for what it is-far from happy but far from terrible. I went to a small party this Sunday. Four people there had been successfully treated for cancer. I shall feel deeply rewarded if, having read this, some of you who have signs of this kind of trouble will go for early help-not through terror but through hope.

Resumen
Biological pattern discovery problems are computationally expensive. A possible technique for reducing the time to perform pattern discovery is parallelization. Since each task in a biological pattern discovery application is usually time-consuming by itself, we might be able to use networks of workstations (NOWs) that communicate infrequently. Persistent Linda (PLinda) is a distributed parallel computing system that runs on NOWs and it automatically utilizes idle workstations (Anderson and Shasha, 1992; Jeong, 1996). This means that labs can do parallel pattern discovery without buying new hardware. We propose an acyclic directed graph structure, exploration dag (E-dag for short), to characterize computational models of biological pattern discovery applications. An E-dag can first be constructively formed from specifications of a pattern discovery problem; then an E-dag traversal is performed on the fly to solve the problem. When done in parallel, the process of E-dag construction and traversal efficiently solves pattern discovery problems. Parallel E-dag construction and traversal can be easily programmed in PLinda. Finding active motifs in sets of protein sequences and in multiple RNA secondary structures are two examples of biological pattern discovery. Before discussing the framework, we introduce these two applications and briefly describe their computational models. Consider a database of imaginary protein sequences D = {FFRR, MRRM, MTRM, DPKY, AVLG} and the query “Find the patterns P of the form *X* where P occurs in at least two sequences in D and the size of P |P| ≥ 2.” (X can be a segment of a sequence of any length, and * represents a variable length don’t care [VLDC].) The good patterns are *RR* (which occurs in FFRR and MRRM) and *RM* (which occurs in MRRM and MTRM). Pattern discovery in sets of sequences concerns finding commonly occurring subsequences (sometimes called motifs). The structures of the motifs we wish to discover are regular expressions of the form *S1 * S2 * ... where S1,S2,… are segments of a sequence, that is, subsequences made up of consecutive letters, and * represents a VLDC. In matching the expression *S1 * S2 * … with a sequence S, the VLDCs may substitute for zero or more letters in S.

Resumen
Abstract Previously, well monitoring in Siak block relied on production crew scheduled tour that needed six hours to complete one cycle of all wells in Lindai field. This paper describes the utilization of digital technology to observe well parameters while sending notification if there is any anomaly regarding those parameters through smart phone application or website. Smart microcontroller was installed in wellhead panel and three sensors are mounted in desired point around wellhead to perform online Intelligent Well Monitoring (IWM) for well’s parameters. If abnormality occurs, real time notification would be sent to user’s smart phone application or website by using global mobile communication system (GSM) signal. The parameters monitored were pressure, temperature, and load because they are essential to be analyzed as initial diagnosis of well problem. Based on the readings, production team could quickly perform troubleshooting to prevent loss production opportunity (LPO). The programming of this smart microcontroller used C language as data compiler. This method was tested in one of the wells in Lindai field, which has the highest oil production. After three months of surveillance, in terms of data quality, the values shown by this tool had only five percent differences compared to manual survey using calibrated measurement tools. Additionally, the parameters could be monitored online, real time, and gave the notification directly to users should there be any issues. Moreover, this tool could reduce the response time of the field crew significantly from six hours following the conventional field tour to only in five minutes by relying on real time notification. In addition, the operational cost of this tool was 82% cheaper compared to other well-known online monitoring tool available in the market so it is considered economical. In the long term, this tool will be implemented on all wells in Siak block for integrated real time monitoring. Furthermore, the impact of field scale implementation will be much greater such as increasing data accuracy by eliminating human error from manual well checking and improving safety of the crew by reducing the possibility of fatigue. The utilization of smart microcontroller for online well monitoring is beneficial for marginal field with high number of wells and wide field coverage. Earlier, real time well monitoring is usually considered expensive investment that rarely become priority. However, the implementation of IoT (Internet of Things) by using this tool can be the game changer in marginal field and maximize the well’s production by reducing LPO.
