Resumen
This dissertation analyses the influence and impact of the discourse on Physiognomy on European theatrical culture at the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth centuries. The debate about the scientific nature of Physiognomy prompted by the work of Johann Caspar Lavater, is discussed in the theoretical and philosophical introduction. Starting from the concept that Physiognomy refers to particular signs on the face, which can be read and interpreted through a well-defined system, this dissertation looks for evidence of a knowledge and awareness of this pseudo-scientific theory among various authors of theatrical works. The methodology applied in the two analytical parts refers to the semiotics of theatre and the subdivision of its material into “performance text” and “dramatic text”. The first part discusses the influence of Physiognomy on theatrical performance. Theatre is seen as a public space and the actor stands at the centre of the performance. The acting manuals published between 1740 and 1840, offer a large amount of physiognomic and pathognomic elements, among them, the theory related to the passions and emotions comes to be of crucial importance in this analysis. In the second part, the influence of Physiognomy on the plays is analysed. This part is dedicated to a text analysis of a selected dramatic corpus of plays in French, English, Italian and German. The analyses begin by summarizing some newly developed genres, such as Melodrama, Comédie Larmoyante, Drame bourgeois, Rührstück, and Bürgerliches Trauerspiel. Physiognomy makes an appearance in many different guises: in the so-called “physiognomical portraits”, for instance, where we find animated discussions on the passions to be displayed, and also direct references to Johann Caspar Lavater and his science. The text analysis ends with a contextualization of the dramatic corpus seen within a wider artistic production of the time (portraits, caricatures, silhouettes).

Resumen
The dualism subject/object has dominated literary imagination, especially throughout the twentieth century, not only in the Western world but also in the Asian continent. However, over the last twenty years, an ontological shift in focus can be observed in the narratives produced by Indian women authors, in which the material object world, from being merely the background, becomes the structural framework of the story. Through their special interest in the domestic, contemporary Indian women authors rehabilitate the small objects and invest them with metonymic power to such an extent that they become symbols of women’s lives. My research aims at demonstrating that an object-oriented close reading of contemporary narratives by Indian women writers offers new insights into Indian women’s condition, not only from the point of view of gender discrimination but also of identity formation, both in postcolonial India and in the diaspora. The theoretical framework I use is based on Bill Brown’s “Thing Theory,” a recent approach which puts subjects and objects in relational rather than oppositional terms. The corpus of writings I have selected includes Arundhati Roy’s novel The God of Small Things (1997), Anita Nair’s novel Ladies’ Coupé (2001), Jhumpa Lahiri’s short stories “Mrs. Sen’s” and “The Third and Final Continent” (1999), and Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s novel The Mistress of Spices (1997). The critical analyses of the texts demonstrate that gender is no less physical than an object. It can be materialized either through the externalization of thoughts and ideologies or through the internalization of the physical object world. Hence, the semiotic apparatus in contemporary Indian women writers’ fiction tells stories of objectification and marginalization and, consequently, constitutes significant reading matter.

Resumen
This thesis is a re-evaluation of Lin Shu (1852-1924) and his literary translations. Lin Shu is one of China’s most influential translators. He initiated modern literary translation in China, and his translations imported new ideas, literary concepts, styles and techniques from the West. These, in turn, influenced the emergence and development of modern Chinese literature. Nevertheless, Lin Shu and his translations have been belittled and even dismissed for various reasons over the years. The emergence and development of target/culture-oriented translation theories offer the possibility of re-assessing Lin Shu and his translations. The re-assessment of Lin Shu and his translations in this study is based on target/culture-oriented translation theories, which emerged in the 1970s. Target/culture-oriented translation theories focus on the mutual influence between a translation and its target culture, especially on the influence of a translation on the target culture and readers as a criterion for successful translation rather than examining whether the target text is faithful to the source text, as in the traditional linguistic approach. These target/culture-oriented theories can effectively explain the translational phenomenon of Lin Shu, as Lin Shu translated with the needs of the target culture and readers in mind. He attached great importance to the cultural function and influence of his translations during a period of historical transition in China. The criticisms of Lin Shu and his translations in China and elsewhere have largely been negative, often highlighting political issues - his endorsement of the constitutional Qing monarchy and his conservative attitude to the New Culture Movement - as well as his free translation method. Target/culture-oriented translation theories offer a framework for the re-assessment of Lin Shu and his translations that bypasses these narrow approaches. Adopting target/culture-oriented translation theories, this thesis examines Lin Shu’s translations in a trans-cultural context. Lin Shu based his translations on the needs for the Chinese culture and readers of that time, which was clearly embodied in his choice of, and response to, the originals works. The prefaces and postscripts that he wrote for his translations illustrate the new cultural and literary factors that Lin Shu introduced into China. In this respect, Lin Shu’s translation of La Dame aux Camelia is perhaps the most famous case study of his translation method. Through a comparative analysis of the Target Text (TT) and Source Text (ST), the thesis discusses the ‘truthfulness’ of Lin Shu’s translation, and stresses that ‘truthfulness’ lies in seeking poetic equivalence rather than formal equivalence between the target and source texts. We argue that poetic equivalence is similar to Nida’s principle of correspondence, but is beyond his dynamic equivalence. It lays special stress on literary or aesthetic equivalence. Poetic equivalence in Lin Shu’s translations relates to the stylistic expression in China’s literary language and is therefore intrinsic to sinicization. Lin Shu’s skill in classical Chinese is central to our notion of poetic equivalence. However, I argue that Lin Shu’s translation strategy is actually also beyond equivalence. It is primarily embodied in his constant adaptation of the original to the perceived needs of Chinese culture and the acceptability of his translations to Chinese readers. Adaptation includes omission, addition, alteration and abridgment. In terms of target/culture/reader-oriented translation theories, Lin Shu’s adaptations were acceptable in the cultural context of his time. In brief, this study clarifies Lin Shu’s contribution in introducing Western culture and literature into China. The study also stresses the cultural influence of Lin’s translations on modern Chinese culture and on later generation of Chinese writers and translators. This thesis concludes that Lin Shu played a role of utmost importance in the establishment and evolution of early-modern and modern Chinese translation, particularly of modern literary translation in China. Therefore, Lin Shu is the father of modern Chinese literary translation.

Resumen
Since the first trade voyages and colonialist campaigns to the non-European lands, representations of non-European cultures by the Western world have been constructed with the influence of Exoticism and Orientalism, which are concepts that focus on the articulated difference between the Eurocentric world and “the Other”. This articulated difference has played an important role in postcolonial studies for a long time in analysing the representations of the Other as an unfamiliar and inferior entity and gave way to the concept of “exotic sameness”, which took every non-European culture as generically exotic. Food is considered as a cultural symbol by food scholars and food studies explores these uses of foodstuffs to reveal political and cultural meanings. The representation of Turkish culture in the United States was influenced by the Exoticist and Orientalist perceptions before 9/11 for they focused mainly on Turkey being a generically exotic Eastern country with a mysterious culture. After 9/11 attacks, American representations started including reflections of Islamophobia in representing Turkish culture. In these representations, food is significant as a cultural symbol and this thesis explores the change in the tone of representation in US popular culture by analysing selected literary and visual materials through the lens of food studies.

“Spain is different”.

Texto completo
Resumen
The aim of this research is to compare Christopher Marlowe’s play Doctor Faustus (1604, 1616) with the first French translation by Jean-Pierre Antoine Bazy (1850) and the first Italian translation by Eugenio Turiello (1898) in search of the changes that are symptomatic of the cultural and ideological context of translation production. The case of Doctor Faustus represents the epitome of the instability of a dramatic source text. Two main versions of the play (the so-called A-text and the B-text) differ in structural, thematic and doctrinal terms. At the same time, neither version delivers a coherent vision. The research seeks to examine whether Bazy’s and Turiello’s translation, emerging at 50-year intervals and belonging to different yet related geographical, historical and literary traditions, further multiply the potential readings of the original or whether they display a more consistent framework. In addition, we will analyse the causes of textual variation. The regularities of the translators’ behaviour and their intervention in translation are manifested across a consistent trend of changes, technically labelled as shifts. First, we will apply a comparative model of translation analysis in order to identify the shifts that occur in the process of linguistic rendering. Then, we will discuss the ways in which the identified patterns of shifts affect the general meaning and the structure of the target texts in question. Finally, adopting a socio-cultural approach, we will show how certain shifts are conditioned by different cultural and ideological factors operating in the recipient systems. This will confirm or reveal the translators’ own ideology and the interpretation of the original, which is in turn indicative of their positions within the complex political and ideological space that surrounds them. The results demonstrate that the two translations represent the ideological extremes in the general reception of the Faust myth and that they mirror a different point in the cultural and political evolution of nineteenth-century Europe.

Resumen
The purpose of this thesis is to establish a direct relationship between literature and fields of knowledge such as science and technology, by focusing on some concepts that were fundamental for both science and the humanities at the beginning of the 20th century. The concepts are those of simultaneity, multiple points of view, map, relativity and acausality. In the spirit of several recent ideas, for example Katherine Hayles’ isomorphism notion, the dissertation shows how writers such as James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Thomas Mann and Robert Musil developed the mentioned concepts within their narratives. The working hypothesis is that those concepts were at a crossroad of human activities, and that those authors used them extensively within their narratives. It is further argued that those same concepts – as developed by Joyce in Ulysses, Woolf’s shorts stories and novels from the end of the 1910’s until the end of the1920’s, Mann’s Der Zauberberg (The Magic Mountain), and Musil’s Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften (The Man Without Qualities) — are still fundamental for our conception of time and space today. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first two chapters will analyse the concepts of simultaneity and multiple points of view and their relationship to cartography as developed within English literature and culture. The next two chapters will address the concepts of relativity and acausality, as developed within German literature and culture.

The present study aims at analyzing how dark humour as a cinematic genre travels cross-culturally through a specific mode of audiovisual translation, i.e. dubbing. In particular, it takes into consideration the processes involved in dubbing humour from English into Italian as observed in the English- and Italian-language versions of ten British and American dark comedies from the 1940s to the 2000s. In an attempt to identify some of the main mechanisms of the dark humour genre, the humorous content of the films was analyzed in terms of the elements on which specific scenes are based, mainly the non-verbal and verbal components. In the cases in which verbal elements were involved, i.e. the examples of verbally expressed humour, the analysis was concerned with whether they were adapted into Italian and to what effect. Quantification of the different kinds of dark humour revealed that in the sample of dark comedies verbal dark humour had a higher frequency (85.3%) than non-verbal dark humour (14.7%), which partially disconfirmed the first part of the research hypothesis. However, the significance of contextual elements in the conveying of dark humour, both in the form of Nsp VEH (54.31%) and V-V (V+VE) (21.68%), provided support for the hypothesis that, even when expressed verbally, dark humour is more closely linked to context-based rather than purely linguistic humour (4.9%). The second part of the analysis was concerned with an investigation of the strategies adopted for the translation of verbal dark humour elements from the SL (English) into the TL (Italian) through the filter of dubbing. Four translational strategies were identified as far as the rendering of verbal dark humour is concerned: i) complete omission; ii) weakening; iii) close rendering; and iv) increased effect. Complete omission was found to be the most common among these strategies, with 80.9% of dark humour examples being transposed in a way that kept the ST’s function substantially intact. Weakening of darkly humorous lines was applied in 12% of cases, whereas increased effect accounted for 4.6% and complete omission for 2.5%. The fact that for most examples of Nsp VEH (84.9%) and V-AC (V+VE) (91.4%) a close rendering effect was observed and that 12 out of 21 examples of V-AC (PL) (a combined 57%) were either omitted or weakened seemed to confirm, on the one hand, the complexity of the translation process required by cases of V-AC (PL) and V-AC (CS). On the other hand, as suggested in the second part of the research hypothesis, the data might be interpreted as indicating that lesser effort on the translator/adaptor’s part is involved in the adaptation of V-AC (Nsp VEH) and V-V (V+VE). The issue of the possible censorial intervention undergone by examples of verbal dark humour in the sample still remains unclear.

This thesis investigates language and culture learning through technologies with special attention to the global and local dimensions of this process. Building upon three case studies experienced at the University of Bologna, the examination of the usage and the effectiveness of technological tools for language and culture learning is conducted in relation with the phenomena of student mobility and internationalisation of higher education. The primary focus is upon Italian language and culture, but other languages and cultures are also taken into account. Similarly, some specific technologies – i.e. the Moodle platform, the MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) and the context of mobile Apps – are spotlighted while dealing with technology for learning purposes in more general terms. The initial chapter is dedicated to providing a thorough methodological overview and raises the relevant critical issues which will be discussed in the following chapters. The second chapter is devoted to the E-LOCAL (Electronically Learning Other Cultures And Languages) experience, which resulted in the creation of the E-LOCAL Moodle courses for six languages and cultures and their institutional systematisation. The third chapter analyses the transition from the E-LOCAL Moodle course to the E-LOCAL MOOC course of Italian language and culture. The fourth chapter discusses the ILOCALAPP (Incidentally Learning Other Cultures And Languages through an APP) the experience and the usage of the UniOn! App for the incidental learning of languages and cultures, whose contents are geo-localised in the reference cities. To conclude, the final chapter provides a systematic reflection upon the results collected in the attempt to identify a possible theoretical framework for learning languages and cultures through technologies. In fact, the conclusions of this work summarise the current and future usages of the tools described, while also opening the path to new possible research perspectives.

Resumen
This dissertation aims to explain the importance and the fundamental role played by the audiovisuals during the process of learning and commanding, step by step, a foreign language. In this thesis, the idiom object of study is American English. In particular, since both language and culture-bound elements need to be taken into consideration to fully handle a foreign language, this work is based on the linguistic and cultural analyse of a famous American tv show from the Nineties, early Two Thousands, the popular and evergreen “Friends”. The following work will deal, in different sections, with the power of videos during the process of learning, especially tv shows, focusing in particular, among the other topics, on the use of subtitles. A section will be dedicated to the the cognitive studies in the field of linguistics linked to the use of audiovisuals along with the problems related to it, such as brain overload, and to the role primarily played by the so-called “mirror neurons”. Afterwards, the relationship abilities in the field of communication will be studied starting from the tv show, following a communicative competence model which includes both verbal and non-verbal issues, such as the ones linked to gesture and the value of culture-bound elements, more generally, present in the show. Finally, the issues of teaching and learning with audiovisuals will be presented, along with the different activities and games which can be proposed after watching the show, and the benefits they can produce in this field, in a playful and “cheerful” perspective of foreign language learning.

Resumen
In the recent decades a new type of economic system based on collaborative consumption has increased in popularity. The new cost competitive model challenges the traditional business model that has fueled the hyper consumption, which the 20th century is known for. This research focuses on how national cultures impact the development of this new economic system, in order to understand how much people of different cultures are willing to share. A conceptual model was created to try to understand cultural influence on sharing. Hofstede’s cultural dimensions have been used to measure and compare the empirical data, that was collected through five focus groups representing four different countries: Sweden, France, China and United States. Out of the six cultural dimensions, it was found that the indulgence dimension together with power distance might influence people’s willingness to share. Indulgence was also found to explain socialization as a motivational factor together with power distance and long-term orientation. In conclusion, four different sharing sectors were analyzed, and it was found that transportation and clothing was considered shareable, disregarding national culture. Accommodation might be dependent on national culture since the focus groups that were supposed to be indulgent showed resistance to share, while the restraint groups showed a greater willingness. Technology was not considered shareable by any group. Furthermore, three motivational factors, that might be depend on national culture, was identified. These are environment, socialization and technology. An additional four motivational factors were identified, but these might be independent of national culture. These four are personal, economical, trust/safety and convenience. Lastly, additional findings showed that similar genders have similar willingness to share across cultures which makes it a topic of interest for future research.

Resumen
Although Chang Ping-lin is well-known for his role in the revolutionary movement that culminated in the termination of imperial rule in 1911, he is more often remembered as a prominent classical scholar. His life and thought illustrates the uneasy relationship between political revolution and cultural conservatism among the intellectuals of his generation, and his advocacy of preserving the national essence paved the way for the far-reaching National Essence Movement in the early twentieth century. This dissertation, thus, represents a study of the tension between politics and culture among Chinese intellectuals and the significance of cultural conservatism during that era. Chang's concern to preserve the national essence was not only because he was a classical scholar, and therefore, felt a responsibility to uphold classical teachings, but also because he believed it was essential for the survival of the nation. Under pressure from Western powers, Chang was afraid that Chinese culture was threatened with extinction. In order to prevent foreign conquest, Chang believed that reform or revolution in China was necessary, and that the most important mission of the reformer or revolutionary was to preserve her unique culture. Therefore, he gave priority to the preservation of the national essence over that of the nation. The latter was important only because it was needed to save the former. And reform or revolution was in turn necessary to save the nation. Chang's lifelong commitment to the preservation of the national essence manifested itself in his two careers: one as a political activist and the other as a classical scholar. Even after the establishment of the Republic of China, Chang remained active in the political arena. He continued to speak out against whatever he perceived to endanger China's sovereignty or its culture. Apart from his involvement in politics, Chang also devoted himself to teaching and the study of China's rich cultural heritage. This effort to preserve the national essence was the most consistent thread in his life.

Resumen
Food is an important part of human cultural expression, and recipes are a way of transmitting the knowledge on its preparation. This dissertation consists in the translation from English into Italian of a sample of recipes belonging to the British and Italian cultural areas and to a mixed “Anglo-Italian” area. The focus is on the rendition and acceptability, for an Italian public, of the cultural elements of the recipes originally thought for a British public . First, the work provides some considerations on the relationship between food and culture. Then, the characteristics of the genre “recipe” are exposed, and useful aspects of translation theory are presented. The recipes included in the dissertation are then translated and each one is presented with a commentary which focusses mainly on their cultural aspects. In conclusion, it is possible to observe that the main problems relate to units of measurement, ingredients’ availability and the need to substitute them or explain their characteristics, implicit traditions in the source culture that need to be explained in the target culture, how Italian recipes and references are treated by the British which need a “re-Italianization” process when presented to the Italian culture, and the need to render the critiques moved to Italian cuisine more acceptable for an Italian public especially in those contexts where they cannot be eliminated.

This research investigates the notion of cultural appropriation with specific reference to Black culture. It connects the key concepts of minstrelsy to more recent cultural and aesthetic expressions like Hip Hop. The initial analysis of Love and Theft, Eric Lott’s pivotal work on early 19th century blackface, provides useful tools for the analysis of more recent phenomena, like Hip Hop and so-called blackfishing on social media. The objective is is to establish a connection between the significance of blackface in 19th century’s white America and the appropriation of African American artistic expressions in the 20th and 21st century by arguing that these are strictly entangled in meaning and audience perception. The link between past and present is conveyed through an exploration of black masculinity, from enslavement to artistic rebellion. Discussion includes an analysis of selected minstrel’s songs, and of white appropriation of rap. The final part calls attention to a relatively recent phenomenon among celebrities and more specifically on social media, which consists in acquiring African American aesthetic features, both in skin color and in body shape.

Agriculture 4.0, also known under several aliases such as ‘digital agriculture', ‘smart farming', and ‘e-farming' is currently developing rapidly in terms of research, development, and commercial applications. As with Agriculture 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0, the objective of Agriculture 4.0 is the use of technology to improve all areas of agriculture. In Agriculture 4.0 it is the application of microelectronics and microtechnologies. Unlike before, these technologies bring things such as the internet-of-things, big data, telecommunications, novel sensing, rapid feedback, data analysis, connectivity, artificial intelligence etc. In principle, all these areas should result in a massive modernization of farming in terms of organisation, yield, efficiency, and quality of produce. However, Agriculture 4.0 is so vast that if one is to contribute to it, even in a minor way, one has to choose a specific area to contribute. The area chosen for the study in this PhD was flax fibre production. Flax fibres are naturally strong fibres which can be extracted from flax stems. The flax stems have evolved to have robust micrometre-diameter fibres running the length of the outside of the stem, and held in place in the external tissue of the stem. Once extracted and isolated, flax fibres have numerous applications ranging from textiles to composite materials. In order to facilitate the mechanical extraction of flax fibres from their parent stems, the stems undergo a process known as ‘retting'. Retting leads to the breakdown of the external tissue between the fibres. A common form of retting is known as ‘dew retting'. In dew retting, natural processes such as bacteria and fungi result in enzymes which break down the middle lamella and gradually separate fibre bunches and fibres from bunches. The length of dew retting depends heavily on the weather. Too little retting results in difficult fibre extraction in the factory, too much retting can result in a compromise in fibre quality. It has long been known that there is an optimum retting point-even the ancients knew this. Certain skilled artisan farmers are able to judge this point via a combination of manual manipulation of the stems, observation of damage caused to the external tissue via this manoeuvre, and also observing the colour and the smell of the stems during this very skilled, but artisanal, testing. It is clear that the artisan is performing rudimentary laboratory tests quite literally ‘in-the-field'. It would seem logical therefore to try to quantify such tests and see if a reliable tool can be made to help the artisan. And indeed, this is exactly what others have attempted. The introduction of the PhD gives examples of attempts to make optimal-retting tools in the 1980s and after. Inspired by this early work, the work of this PhD attempts a full multiscale mechanical characterization of flax stems and fibres during a retting cycle (summer 2022) and, somewhat ambitiously, performed in real time-to our knowledge for the first time. The mechanical characterization involved macroscopic mechanical tests (bending, crushing, and twisting), as well as novel microscopic mechanical testing of single flax fibres using novel methods inspired by MEMS. In addition, the nanoscopic mechanical properties of the primary cell wall of retting flax fibres was characterised using nanoindentation AFM. As the experimental work, analysis via analytical modelling, and interpretation descends in scale from macro, through micro, to nano, we learn a little more of how the retting affects the stems, their properties, and their fibres. In addition to simply learning, a very positive outcome of the PhD is that one is able to suggest a mechanically-induced damage mechanism in stems which could be the basis for a tool. One can note however, that the uncontrollable multiparameter nature of the subject, e.g. the weather, means that several studies would be needed to confirm beyond doubt observations from a single retting cycle

Abstract: The change in the relationship between the public and the media and also between the journalist and its own profession after the emergence of the wireless connection to the Internet and the online social networking sites are the starting point of this study. To investigate this new scenario, we take as object the Brazilian vehicle Catraca Livre, which publishes material produced by its journalists and complements its content with the help of a network of collaborators. Based on the concepts of network society, participatory culture and curation, we understand that the public stops being passive and becomes a produser, and also the journalist leaves the position of gatekeeper and assumes the role of curator. And, rethinking the reception and defining it now as a dissemination, we investigate how the network centered on the fanpage of Catraca Livre, with the help of Graph Theory and node and network metrics, in order to understand how the information published by Catraca Livre profile on Facebook circulate through the connections established among the various nodes, making the vehicle fanpage a technical resource of spreadable media. At the end, we point out that the business model proposed by the site is viable and adapted to the networked society; the journalist assumes the role of curator, but does not abandon his traditional duties; and although its potential in RSO is still poorly explored, Catraca Livre is able to disseminate its content in the network.

Resumen
This dissertation aims at providing readers of Nabokov's fiction with a better awareness towards his works and the way they playfully engage with concepts such as culture, national representation, and identity, especially if one considers how much Nabokov’s production, although often indirectly, was aimed at establishing a dialogue with the American lifestyle and its values. In particular, the following pages will investigate his approach towards three key aspects that have been traditionally associated with American culture that are deeply interrelated. The first part of this inquiry will discuss the influence of mass media and consumer culture on the shaping of the character’s choices, and they way they problematically react to and engage with such concepts; the following chapter analyzes gender representation and the myth of innocence within American culture, a theme constantly present in the novels; while the third will be focused on the way Nabokov’s physical worlds (the semi-realistic U.S. of “Pnin" and “Lolita" and the Kingdom of Zembla) challenge us to explore those very boundaries that define national belonging and to rethink the idea of nation and its limits.

This study approaches the relations of family and school, from the perspective of the family. It aims to analyze the meanings attributed by family to the school as a space for plural relationships, and understand the relations that these mothers constitute culturally with schools and their everyday pedagogical practices. When we seek to understand this problematic, it was established as guiding principles of the search in/from/with everyday life. Accordingly, we focused on, as main interlocutors, mothers and authors such as Certeau (1994), Morin (2000) and Freire (1978), among others, on the understanding that cultural diversity is an essential element of the complex relationship between family and public school, because they come from different cultural contexts. In the course of the research it was made the use of the procedure of dialogic conversation as a production process and information analysis. The current analysis highlights that families observe the difference between cultural and report that they are from different socio-political context set by the school, they came from rural areas and their lives were marked by the struggle for survival, and the work activity has been present since their childhood. For the families that participated in this research the school is/was not part of the cultural repertoire significance in their lives and it feels that they attribute to them, are in negotiations with their symbolic universe. The mothers hold a speech of a schoolar binding and pertencing, but the school has the time as possible in their daily lives. Thus, the dynamics of family and school relationships, is configured as complex, and the ambiguity in maternal speech marks a thinking/doing about the school in which they demonstrate ways of making the common man, involving the art of duplicity of the saying and doing, gimmnicks and antidiscipline

ABSTRACT The aim of this work is to focus on the connection between culture and translation. It is not an odd claim: culture influences translation in so many different ways, from understanding to re – elaborating. For this reason we can easily say that the job of a translator is strictly linked to the cultural aspect that becomes a key player on the translation process. As we will show in the study you are going to read about, the translator task is not easy as it may seem even if it has been considered a second-level activity for a long a time. Many linguists, researchers and academic professionals as well, such as Susan Bassnett and Eugene Nida, talked about translation, defining what it is, its development process and describing the task of the leading role involved with it: the translator. Even not in a specific and detailed way, this work sketches out a general view of the translation process as a whole, focusing on the claim that it is not enough to study grammar, structural sentences or linguistic peculiarities to be a good translator, that would be a very shallow attitude and not a professional one at all. As a matter of fact, it is also necessary to have a strong cultural knowledge of the source language, knowing not only its history, social background or literature but also its political assets, costumes, traditions, and so on. In this way it will be possible to catch the linguistic hints of a text, its characteristics, being able to lead the target reader in the world of the source one. Culture is not a static process, is a dynamic one, because culture is busy going on with life passing. We also dealt with this aspect in the following work, showing how it concretely influences the translator job, describing how culture can be defined and the way she can affect a translation. We did all this through examples taken from Los demonios de Berlín, a crime novel set on 1945’s Berlin written by Spanish author Ignacio Del Valle, where fictional murders, mysteries and love mix with real historical events and characters. This historic aspect is one of the most culturally charged one and it forces the translator to know well about that in order to do his job in the better way. We also mentioned some linguistic problems connected with culture the translator may encounter during its working process: neologisms and special culturally charged words called culturemas. It had also worth a mention idiolect and problems linked to translator choices to be adherent to author writing style. Let’s enter the cultural translation world.

This research focuses on the concept of « linking value », applied to mutualist insurance companies, in order to contribute to the revival of their core values and democratic ideals. It is fed by the evolutions of contemporary society, where chosen consumption is progressively replacing mass consumerism, thus moderating the producer-consumer dichotomy, which allows new types of relationships between actors to emerge. The progressive disappearance of the borders between consumption actors is key to our work, as the mutualist insurance companies’ stakeholders build new types of relations, beyond classic consumption relations, which yields not only exchange value and use value, but also a linking value. The concept of linking value was originally developed by social science, and further brand community developments have led to mobilize this notion in the marketing field. Its usage in the field of insurance services is new. Our work comprises a survey among members of Groupe Macif, including interviews with Macif employees, Macif delegates, and Macif’s historic founder. Linking value is an “evasive object”, and we had to implement a specific research methodology in order to bring it to light and characterize it within the company. To analyze the interviews, we used an appropriate coding technique, through dedicated software (Modalisa). The research is carried through a double data analysis method, named etic - emic (or horizontal – vertical), aimed first at understanding what has a meaning in the respondent’s locutions, and then at identifying the elements of structure of the linking value from the meanings identified. Such reasoning requires that the interviewer has empathy capacities with the respondents. Our research brings the following results: • First, we qualify the “link experience” based on emotions, a reciprocity intention, an ethical functioning and shared confidence. • We then propose a characterization of linking value in the mutualist field, based on an extension to Rémy’s typology (2000), which is the current reference for services companies. • Next, we show how linking value emerges, depending on it being based on a priori activism, or on a posteriori relationship between the employees and the policy holder. • We establish the main characteristics of linking value: its capacity to temper the otherness created by the contract, an asymmetry between the partners of the exchange, the very lack of community feelings among members. • We expose the privileged expression vectors for this linking value: the empathy deployed by company’s employees and the solidarity schemes. • Recognition emerges also as a foundation to linking value. We register our reasoning in the field of recognition theory, as it founds an ethic of interpersonal relationship, constituent of social link. The mutual recognition dynamics allows each individual to experience a “collective revival”, and to share his belonging to a political or ethical community, without losing his identity. Mutualist insurance companies need to recognize such a pluralist community, in which each individual sees himself in the purpose of a company model, as this recognition founds linking value. We finally show that resuming the democratic ideals that historically founded Mutualist Associations is what will allow them to restore an authentic social link, in the spirit of modern mutualism

This project undertakes an analysis of the Crystal Easel, exhibition apparatus created in the late 1950s by the Italian-Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi as the central element in the expographic composition of the Museu de Arte de São Paulo, MASP. Taking the spatial solution for which the apparatus was planned and the curatorial discourse embedded in it as starting point, the study will show that the design of this object created a singular expographic grammar that, even after its extinction in 1996, continues to reverberate forcefully in international discussions about the challenges of displaying art in museums today. This research relects the need to turn our attention to Lina Bo Bardi\'s proposal, evidencing the validity of resuming the museum\'s original proposal as a way to recover a fundamental space for cultural experience in the city of São Paulo - a museum which, like few others, was born of a deep understanding of the particularities of Brazilian culture.

Literature and realia. GDR-culture-specific terms in the Italian translations of Wendeliteratur Realia are expressions referring to culture-specific phenomena, which can only be understood in the particular cultural context in which they are embedded; consequently they lack a corresponding expression in the target language. In the works of contemporary German literature focusing on life in the GDR, the so called Wendeliteratur, realia are used with a “quotational” function to denote and connote the particular situation of East Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall and in the period until Germany reunification. Starting from the existing works concerning culture-specific terms, this thesis proposes a definition of realia. Through an integrated approach joining together the different theoretical issues of the translation studies with the practical issues of the translation task, it then develops a specific taxonomy for culture-specific terms in the GDR and investigates the main translation strategies and concrete procedures through an analysis of the solutions proposed in the translated works. The different choices in the Italian versions are finally submitted to an analysis based on the isotopies containing culture-specific expressions. Realia are repeated through the text assuring its coherence, they constitute an orientation for the interpreting task of the reader/translator, they guide him/her to recognize the different levels of the textual coherence and to choose the most appropriate solutions, taking into account the different textual dimensions and the complexity of the translation task. The results of the analysis are used as reference points for the translation into Italian of Friedrich Christian Delius’ novel Die Birnen von Ribbeck.

I have done my paper in quest of “neutral Italian”, that national, standard, unitary language which is a model for all regional and individual variations. I have dealt with the topic historically : I have singled out the most meaningful stages of this cultural debate (an essential component of the matter of the Italian language) examining school curricula, theories and lack of implementation. The first part of my paper focuses on the dichotomy between plain language and dialect while the second part deals with the contrasting realities of “neutral Italian” and “regional Italians” The cultural debate has shown the existence of continuing interest in a linguistic model for the spoken language tracing a sort of “geometrical” history of the language, going from the Florentine hub, to the “ Florence-Rome axis” and then to the “ northern triangle” finally to get to the most recent theories about the “geophonic centre”. As regards the school world I have detected the lack of an efficacious, structured linguistic policy on the spoken language other than on the written and the grammatical one.

Poetry is usually identified with the written text as if the oral form belonged to another kind of literature which is not considered as much important as the 'proper', academic poetry. However, oral poetry is widespread in different cultures nowadays, not only as the heritage of a past folkloristic tradition but as a new roaring form of art. Actually, Tracie Morris and Jean “Binta” Breeze are two clear examples of how the voice can be so effective in poetry and how two different genres, Sound Poetry and Dub Poetry, have so much to tell about black culture and the influence of sound and performance in the individual perception.

Resumen
When the sentimental novel of the 18th century is contemplated, the established topics of the figure of the man of feeling, the concept of domestic/public spheres, passion versus logic/reason as a result of emotions all come to mind. These topics have been discussed in depth for so long they are considered tropes of eighteenth-century literature. Enlightenment selected for this study is no coincidence. It was in the era of the Enlightenment that a new attitude appeared, which gave impetus to the design of that system of values, which remains relevant at the beginning of the third millennium. The purpose of the study is to identify the core of the values of the Enlightenment culture in the English novel of the 17th -18th centuries. To achieve this goal, it is planned to solve the corresponding problems: to study rationalism based on the material of Daniel Defoe’s novels, to consider the problem in the sentimental novels of the 17th -18th in the example of “Man of Feelings” by Mackenzie, and to draw general conclusions about the values of the Enlightenment culture based on the analysis of the sentimental English novel. The structure of the thesis is consisted of an introduction, two chapters, conclusion and list of used literature.

Composite materials based on natural reinforcements are constantly evolving towards products that are either the least expensive or the most efficient, and ideally both at the same time. For the sake of environmental protection and public health, their use has become a major issue and will be even more in the near future and in the long term. The automotive industry, for example, is increasingly interested in plant fibers in order to use renewable and sustainable materials, and to lighten vehicles whose mass is responsible for 75% of fuel consumption (cellulose fibers are 30 % less dense than glass fibers). It is in this context that this research work takes place, whose main objective is to study the effect of the transformation parametersof textile flax (scutching, hackling and homogenization) as well as the effect of its conditions of culture (degrees of maturity and retting) on the physicochemical and mechanical characteristics of technical flax fibers and the mechanical performance of the associated biobased flax /epoxy composite materials, produced by thermocompression. For each flax Modalities (reference, transformation and culture), technical flax fibers are characterized by Van Soest method, X-ray diffraction, pycnometry, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in order to determine and compare respectively their biochemical composition, crystallinity index, density, thermal stability and morphology as well as the different chemical bonds present on the surface. The tensile mechanical properties of each technical flax fiber, unidirectional veil of flax fiber and thermopressed bio-based composite material are also determined. A new method, considering temperature and relative humidity during tensile tests, is proposed to calculate the cross section of technical flax fiber. The results of the transformation campaign show that the flax hackling step can be deleted without affecting the mechanical properties of the proposed bio-based composite materials. The results of the culture campaign show a slight effect of the degrees of maturity and retting of technical flax fibers on the mechanical properties of the biobased composite materials produced. It appears that the degrees of maturity and retting of flax impact their rigidity and breaking properties, respectively

Although women were excluded from the public life, politics, the right of citizenship and History, at least in the centuries that preceded the 19th and the first half of the 20th century there is, nevertheless, a situation in which they were recognized in a very privileged way and that went beyond their private lives: dance, the language of the body. This paper aims to trace the history of the womans body through dance, specifically the ciranda (a popular dance) by Lia do Itamaraçá. The objective is to analyze what is determined in the feminine by the body and what is imaginary and from this point of view verify whether the ciranda produces a body Other, different from the bio-power as stated by Foucault. Finally, we would like to find the libertarian actions effectuation that would shape as the breakage of the corporeity limits imposed by society.
