Resumen
Light pollution is a new source of environmental pollution after exhaust gas, wastewater, waste residue, and noise. Research shows that light pollution is threatening people's health. In order to accurately measure the level of light pollution risk in a region, this paper established a light pollution risk index level model, and used this model to detect the level of light pollution risk in different types of places. Specifically, by determining the main factors that affect the risk of light pollution, and searching for corresponding data indicators from different countries to calculate the weight, this paper uses a combination of entropy weight and coefficient of variation to obtain the index weight, and establishes a light pollution risk index level model based on the weight. Finally, the model is applied to four specific types of locations to determine their risk level of light pollution.

Resumen
The purpose of this research is to investigate the structural efficiency of 8-node IsoTruss structures subject to uniaxial compression using numerical, dimensional, and optimization methods. The structures analyzed herein are based on graphite/epoxy specimens that were designed for light-weight space applications, and are approximately 10 ft. (3 m) long and 0.3 lb. (0.14 kg). The principal failure modes considered are material failure, global buckling, local buckling at the bay level, and longitudinal strut buckling. Studies were performed with the following objectives: to correlate finite element predictions with experimental and analytical methods; to derive analytical expressions to predict bay-level buckling; to characterize interrelations between design parameters and buckling behavior; to develop efficient optimization methods; and, to compare the structural efficiency of outer longitudinal configurations with inner longitudinal configurations. Finite element models were developed in ANSYS, validated with experimental data, and verified with traditional mechanics. Data produced from the finite element models were used to identify trends between non-dimensional Pi variables, derived with Buckingham's Pi Theorem. Analytical expressions were derived to predict bay-level buckling loads, and verified with dimensional analyses. Numerical and dimensional analyses were performed on IsoTruss structures with outer longitudinal members to compare the structural performance with inner longitudinal configurations. Analytical expressions were implemented in optimization studies to determine efficient and robust optimization techniques and optimize the inner and outer longitudinal configurations with respect to mass. Results indicate that the finite element predictions of axial stiffness and global buckling loads correlate with traditional mechanics equations, but overestimate the capacity demonstrated in previously published experimental results. The buckling modes predicted by finite element predictions correlate with traditional mechanics and experimental results, except when the local and global buckling loads coincide. The analytical expressions derived from mechanics to predict local buckling underestimate the constraining influence of the helical members, and therefore underestimate the local buckling capacity. The optimization analysis indicates that, in the specified design space, the structure with outer longitudinal members demonstrates a greater strength-to-weight ratio than the corresponding structure with inner longitudinal members by sustaining the same loading criteria with 10% less mass.

This research is devoted to the design of 10 inch lightweight adjustable wrench. The main purpose is that the structure of an adjustable wrench must pass the proof torque test of ASME B107.8. Applying Taguchi experiment method with finite element analysis software ANSYS WorkBench to obtain important dimensional factors that affect the structural strength of an adjustable wrench in a systematic way and get the optimum design parameters. The quality characteristics of Taguchi method is the equivalent stress in this research. Different combinations of factors from Taguchi orthogonal table were performed with simulation analysis by ANSYS WorkBench. The results show the primary factors affecting the structure strength of adjustable wrench jaws are the neck slope and the width of adjustable jaw which also help an adjutable wrench to resist against the torque force. The maximum equivalent stress of an optimized adjustable wrench is 1289.2MPa that is much lower than the material yield strength of 1657MPa. Compared with the equivalent stress 1692MPa of initial adjutable wrench design, the maximum equivalent stress of the optimized design decreased 402.8MPa. Moreover, the weight of the optimized adjustable wrench is 24% lighter than the weight of a 10 inch non-lightweight adjustable wrench. The result meets the research purposes in this study.

As the mature technology development in telecommunication systems, the security issues caused by SMS are growing including propagation of malware, fraud, adverting and even botnets. In Q1 2016 reports issued by Kaspersky, SMS Trojan is occupied by 20.5% as second place of the distribution of new mobile malware. Thus, this paper proposes an architecture called SMS Helper aiming to provide a solution to addresses SMS-related issues. This paper provides two modes: cloud service mode and real device mode. Since current Android dynamic analysis frameworks cannot send and receive SMS messages authentically, SMS Helper can help these frameworks to send and receive messages. This system keep the integrity of SMS logs and strengthen the frameworks to observe malware’s further behaviors. Meanwhile, the virtual environment can low the cost of researches. In addition, this paper finds a new way to figure out the operating environment through SMS and by means of SMS Helper to evade this kind of detecting method. Also, the information leaks result in advisements and frauds harassing users frequently. SMS Helper can be adopted in a real device as well to protect the privacy of users’ real numbers.

Resumen
Method engineering models and techniques have been extensively used for turning traditional methods into project-specific methods. However, it is increasingly being recognized that there exists a ‘dynamic’ and ‘light-weight’ methodology as well. These methodologies are popularly addressed as an agile methodology. Agile methodologies are gaining importance in many organisations. The thesis addresses the issue of providing project-specific methods for both traditional paradigm and agile paradigm. The solution starts by providing a decision support system that helps to predict the appropriate methodological model for the current project. The Decision support system based on the defined the set of weighted project characteristics along with the project-specific input metrics for these project characteristics. Further, thesis move towards the method configuration process for providing project-specific methods for both traditional paradigm and agile paradigm. The proposed method configuration process is analogous to system configuration. The system configuration is based on the construction of a ‘configurable system model’ that represents the essential system concepts and the interrelationship between these. Similarly, method configuration processes based on ‘configurable methods’ having as essentiality attribute. The process starts by developing a configurable Metamodel capable enough to model the concepts of the configurable method. The configurable Metamodel is an instantiation of decisional Metamodel that is an instantiation of generic Metamodel. Therefore, the proposed Metamodel is an instantiation of the generic model. Now just as the system configuration process yields a family of configured methods so also the method configuration process produces a family of methods. Further, the process was validated with the help of case studies in different domains.

The USB interface already exists on most computer hardware platforms. However, most of the threats of the USB devices are only found on USB flash devices. BadUSB is a hardware device that plugs into a target computer or other device through a USB interface and simulates HID. The interface, to execute the attack code or interference, to achieve control host and information leakage, currently blocking the BadUSB attack method, black and white list firewall is more common, using USB features and messages to determine the blocking effect. There are currently low-cost single-chip BadUSB platforms, such as Rubber ducky, Teensy USB and Arduino, etc., it cannot simulate simultaneous simulation of USB information, so that USB firewall can use this features to do interception. Therefore, in this paper, we will develop BadUSB that can pass current USB firewalls, This BadUSB can do lower-level faking, simulate multiple USB functions at the same time with the same USB device, and use the authentication mechanism to verify HID attacks.

Telenko, Cassandra. "Probabilistic graphical modeling as a use stage inventory method for environmentally conscious design". 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/19779.

Texto completo
Resumen
Probabilistic graphical models (PGMs) provide the capability of evaluating uncertainty and variability of product use in addition to correlating the results with aspects of the usage context. Although energy consumption during use can cause a majority of a product's environmental impact, common practice is to neglect operational variability in life cycle inventories (LCIs). Therefore, the relationship between a product's usage context and its environmental performance is rarely considered in design evaluations. This dissertation demonstrates a method for describing the usage context as a set of factors and representing the usage context through a PGM. The application to LCIs is demonstrated through the use of a lightweight vehicle design example. Although replacing steel vehicle parts with aluminum parts reduces the weight and can increase fuel economy, the energy invested in production of aluminum parts is much larger than that of steel parts. The tradeoff between energy investment and fuel savings is highly dependent upon the vehicle fuel economy and lifetime mileage. The demonstration PGM is constructed from relating factors such as driver behavior, alternative driving schedules, and residential density with local conditional probability distributions derived from publicly available data sources. Unique scenarios are then assembled from sets of conditions on these factors to provide insight for sources of variance. The vehicle example demonstrated that implementation of realistic usage scenarios via a PGM can provide a much higher fidelity investigation of energy savings during use and that distinct scenarios can have significantly different implications for the effectiveness of lightweight vehicle designs. Scenarios with large families, for example, yield high energy savings, especially if the vehicle is used for commuting or stop-and-go traffic conditions. Scenarios of small families and efficient driving schedules yield lower energy savings for lightweight vehicle designs.

Abstract I. Static light-scattering (LS) detection can determine the molecular weight (Mw) of polymers eluted with size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) without using any standards when the differential refraction index (RI) of solutes are obtained. On the other hand, the noisy chromatographic signal peak acquired using a static LS detector often causes difficulty in peak-width recognition. This disadvantage limits the determination accuracy and precision of the values. This study developed one second-order derivative filtering procedure by convolving the original LS chromatogram against the second-derivative curve of one artificial Gaussian-shape chromatographic peak to suppress the noises and to correct the baseline of the chromatogram. More accurate estimations of the chromatographic peak widths of pullulan samples were achieved to improve the determination accuracy. For noisy original chromatography peaks of pullulan 5 k (SNR of approximately 10), the non-ideal determination accuracy of the values (9.3%) is improved to –1.3% with the assistance of the filtering procedures. In addition, when the signal to noise ratio of the polymer sample is lower than the calculated limitation of the built-in application software package OmniSEC 4.6 (SNR lower than 10), the weight-average molecular weight (Mw) can not be calculated. But the has occupied a very important role in the synthesis of polymers. To overcome this limitation, we consider the principles of refractometer and light-scattering detector to get the molecular weight. Using the filtering procedure we designed in part one to find the more accurate peak width, then combining the numerical calculation to calculate the molecular weight of low SNR signal. We infer that we can use the numerical calculation to get the molecular weight measured from the SEC which the SNR is lower than the limitation of the software package. This method increased the calculable SNR of the software package OmniSEC to calculate the polymers’ weight-average molecular weight. Abstract II. Electrowetting on dielectrics (EWOD) is droplet-based microfluidic technique to control the generation, division, merge, or movement of droplets via electrical signals. The mechanical parts such as pumps and valves are not in needed for electrically actuated EWOD device. In this study, the dual-planar ITO glass slides were used to fabricate EWOD chip. The standard photolithography techniques were utilized to craft the bottom planar electrode array to coat with photoresist dielectric layer. The upper ITO glass slide was drilled through and chamfered for the convenience to fill liquid droplet. In addition, the dual-planar ITO glass slides were coated with the Teflon hydrophobic layer of 300 nm in thickness. The applied electric field with voltage 70 Vpp of 1 kHz is switched by relays to trigger the electrode on the bottom slide consecutively. This design of semi-opened chip can directly receive liquid sample or connect with the micro-channel outlet of continuous flow. In the future, we want to use the photomultiplier to pick up the signals from the fluorescence particles and couple with this EWOD microchip to separate the fluorescence particles from other non- fluorescence particles.

Resumen
With the development of fiber optical data transmission technologies and infrastructure on a global scale, the use of fiber optical sensors to perform sensing functions is becoming increasingly important mainly due to their advantages, such as small size, light weight, multiplexing capabilities and others. Therefore, in order to ensure more efficient use of optical sensor technologies, it is necessary to research and search for new solutions for the integration and use of fiber optical sensors in existing and future fiber optical communication system architecture. The main goal of the Doctoral Thesis is to study and evaluate the interaction of FBG fiber optical sensor networks and WDM-PON metro-access transmission systems implemented in a single system with theoretical and experimental research. In order to evaluate their performance in a unified system, a detailed study of the interaction between the FBG optical sensor network and the fiber optic data transmission system has been performed by implementing mathematical modeling and experimental development of such systems.

Krasnopolskaia, Iuliia. Design and Parametric Modeling of Pretensioned and Stiffened Membranes Project Work. Technische Universität Dresden, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.25368/2022.407.

Texto completo
Resumen
This research aimed to develop conceptually the pretensioned and stiffened membrane structures, using an experimental approach and computer simulation. The physical method of form finding included the pretensioned fabric with the glued grid made of the wooden sticks. Relaxation of the stressed membrane contributed to forming the specific anticlastic hyparic surface by energy release. The influence of the rigid elements pattern, intensity and direction of pretensioning on the final shape was investigated. The tensegrity structures were also built applying the same form finding way. These experiments led to the modelling of resulting samples with parametric design tools, namely Rhino and Grasshopper. Optimization of the final shape was carried out by changing parameters such as stiffenings configuration and membrane strength. This digital approach demonstrated successful simulation and rationalization of considered structures. Moreover, the final models can be used for further structural analysis and BIM. Considered membrane structures have very efficient load-bearing behavior. They are characterized by small weight, high light transmission and the ability to create large usable spaces free from columns. The most dangerous loads for membrane structures are wind and ponding. In practice, PTFE coated glass-fibre fabric and PVC coated polyester fabric are most suitable for pretensioned and stiffened membrane structures. The role of stiff elements can be played by steel profiles or metal tubes. The average time for the construction of a membrane structure is 6-15 months. Resulted pretensioned and stiffened membrane structures can be used as pavilions, roofs and awnings. They are distinguished by spectacular architectural view and very effective structural system. In addition, membrane tensile structures are characterized by high eco-efficiency and sustainability compared to other types of construction.

Resumen
AbstractIn view of the particularity of micro expression, there are some problems, such as resource waste or parameter redundancy in micro expression training and recognition by using large convolutional neural network model alone. Therefore, a method of using lightweight model to recognize micro expression is proposed, which aims to reduce the size of model space and the number of parameters, and improve the accuracy at the same time. This method uses mini-Xception as the framework and Non-Local Net and SeNet as parallel auxiliary feature extractors to enhance feature extraction. Finally, the simulation experiments are carried out on the two public data sets of fer2013 and CK+. After a certain training cycle, the accuracy can reach 74.5% and 97.8% respectively, which slightly exceeds the commonly used classical models. It is proved that the improved lightweight model has higher accuracy, lower parameters and model size than the large convolution network model.

Resumen
AbstractOne key aspect in analysis of heat pipe microreactors is the efficient modeling of heat pipes and its coupling with the solid reactor core. Various options exist for modeling of heat pipes. Most models require an explicit coupling between the vapor core, which brings in an additional layer of coupling when the heat pipe model is integrated into a system-level safety analysis model. This additional layer of coupling causes both convergence concern and computational burden in practice. This article aims at developing a new heat pipe modeling algorithm, where the heat pipe wall, wick, and vapor core are discretized and coupled in a monolithic fully-implicit manner. The vapor core will be modeled as a one-dimensional compressible flow with the capability of predicting sonic limit inherently; a two-dimensional axisymmetric heat conduction model will be used to model the heat pipe wall and wick region. The heat pipe wick and vapor core are coupled through a conjugate heat transfer interface. Eventually, the coupled system will be solved using the Jacobian-Free Newton-Krylov (JFNK) method. It is demonstrated that the new coupled system works well. Consideration of the vapor compressibility in the two-equation model allows more detailed representation of the vapor core dynamics while remains light-weight in terms of computational complexity. The new model is verified by an approximate analytical solution to the heat pipe vapor core and is validated by a sodium heat pipe experiment.

Resumen
This report documents the findings from SPR-4230 (Alternative Quality Assurance Methods for Compacted Subgrade). The main objective of SPR-4230 involved establishing performance-related quality assurance (QA) test methods for pavement subgrade construction. Because INDOT generally prefers specifying subgrade treatment type IBC (i.e., 14-in. cement modified subgrade), this study focused on performance-based QA test methods for constructing cement modified subgrade. Moreover, INDOT prefers using light weight deflectometer (LWD) for chemically modified subgrade construction acceptance, so this study aimed to use LWD deflection measurements as performance-related construction acceptance criteria. A laboratory study was performed to relate LWD deflections with resilient modulus that is the key subgrade performance-related parameter in pavement design. In addition, LWD deflections were related with unconfined compressive strength increase that is the key parameter in chemical soil modification mix design. A rigorous field study consisting of LWD testing and falling weight deflectometer (FWD) testing at INDOT new pavement construction sites was conducted to verify the laboratory developed relationship. Recommendations for implementing results of this study into cement modified subgrade construction acceptance is provided, as are recommendations for future research.

Aly, Radi y John I. Yoder. Development of resistant crop plants to parasitic weeds based on trans-specific gene silencing. United States Department of Agriculture, enero de 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2013.7598146.bard.

Texto completo
Resumen
Broomrapes (Orobanche/Phelipanchespp.) are holo parasitic plants that subsist on the roots of a variety of agricultural crops and cause severe losses to the yield quality and quantity. Effective methods for controlling parasitic weeds are scarce, with only a few known cases of genetic resistance. In the current study, we proposed an improved strategy for the control of parasitic weeds based on trans-specific gene-silencing of three parasite genes at once. We used two strategies to express dsRNA containing selected sequences of three Phelipancheaegyptiacagenes PaACS, PaM6PR and PaPrx1 (pma): transient expression using Tobacco rattle virus (TRV:pma) as a virus-induced gene-silencing (VIGS) vector and stable expression in transgenic tomato Solanumlycopersicum(Mill.) plants harboring a hairpin construct (pBINPLUS35:pma). siRNA-mediated transgene-silencing (20–24 nt) was detected in the host plants. Our results demonstrate that the quantities of PaACSand PaM6PR transcripts from P. aegyptiacatubercles grown on transgenic tomato or on Tobacco rattle virus-infected Nicotianabenthamianaplants were significantly reduced. However, only partial reductions in the quantity of PaPrx1 transcripts were observed in the parasite tubercles grown on tomato and on N. benthamianaplants. Concomitant with the suppression of the target genes, there were significant decreases in the number and weight of the parasite tubercles that grew on the host plants, in both the transient and the stable experimental systems. The results of the work carried out using both strategies point to the movement of mobile exogenous siRNA from the host to the parasite, leading to the impaired expression of essential parasite target genes. In light of the importance of parasitic weeds to world agriculture and the difficulty of obtaining resistance by conventional methods, we assume that genetic resistance based on the silencing of key metabolic genes in the parasite is now feasible. Resumen
Engineers and ecologists continue to explore new methods and adapt existing techniques to improve highway mitigation measures that increase motorist safety and conserve wildlife species. Crossing structures, overpasses and underpasses, combined with fences, are some of the most highly effective mitigation measures employed around the world to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVCs) with large animals, increase motorist safety, and maintain habitat connectivity across transportation networks for many other types and sizes of wildlife. Published research on structural designs and materials for wildlife crossings is limited and suggests relatively little innovation has occurred. Wildlife crossing structures for large mammals are crucial for many highway mitigation strategies, so there is a need for new, resourceful, and innovative techniques to construct these structures. This report explored the promising application of fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs) to a wildlife crossing using an overpass. The use of FRP composites has increased due to their high strength and light weight characteristics, long service life, and low maintenance costs. They are highly customizable in shape and geometry and the materials used (e.g., resins and fibers) in their manufacture. This project explored what is known about FRP bridge structures and what commercial materials are available in North America that can be adapted for use in a wildlife crossing using an overpass structure. A 12-mile section of US Highway 97 (US-97) in Siskiyou County, California was selected as the design location. Working with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), a site was selected for the FRP overpass design where it would help reduce WVCs and provide habitat connectivity. The benefits of a variety of FRP materials have been incorporated into the US-97 crossing design, including in the superstructure, concrete reinforcement, fencing, and light/sound barriers on the overpass. Working with Caltrans helped identify the challenges and limitations of using FRP materials for bridge construction in California. The design was used to evaluate the life cycle costs (LCCs) of using FRP materials for wildlife infrastructure compared to traditional materials (e.g., concrete, steel, and wood). The preliminary design of an FRP wildlife overpass at the US-97 site provides an example of a feasible, efficient, and constructible alternative to the use of conventional steel and concrete materials. The LCC analysis indicated the preliminary design using FRP materials could be more cost effective over a 100-year service life than ones using traditional materials.

Shomer, Ilan, Louise Wicker, Uzi Merin y William L. Kerr. Interactions of Cloud Proteins, Pectins and Pectinesterases in Flocculation of Citrus Cloud. United States Department of Agriculture, febrero de 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2002.7580669.bard.

Resumen
The overall objective was to understand the cloud flocculation of citrus juice by characterization of the interactions between proteins and pectins, and to determine the role of PE isozymes in catalyzing this phenomenon. Specific objectives were to: 1. identify/characterize cloud-proteins in relation to their coagulable properties and affinity to pectins; 2. to determine structural changes of PME and other proteins induced by cation/pectin interactions; 3. localize cloud proteins, PME and bound protein/pectates in unheated and pasteurized juices; 4. to create "sensitized" pectins and determine their effect on clarification. The original objectives were not changed but the methods and approach were modified due to specific research requirements. Two i postulates were: 1. there is a specific interaction of cloud proteins with de-esterified regions of ! pectin and this contributes to cloud loss; 2. isozymes of pectin-methyl-esterase (PME) vary in efficiency to create sensitized pectins. The appearance of citrus fruit juice is an important quality factor and is determined by the color and turbidity that .are conferred by the suspended particles, i.e., by the cloud and its homogeneity. Under some circumstances the cloud tend to flocculate and the juice clarifies. The accepted approach to explain the clarification is based on pectin demethoxylation by PME that promotes formation of Ca-pectate. Therefore, the juice includes immediate heat-inactivation upon ~ squeezing. Protein coagulation also promotes cloud instability of citrus fruit extracts. However, the clarification mechanism is not fully understood. Information accumulated from several laboratories indicates that clarification is a more complex process than can be explained by a single mechanism. The increasing trend to consume natural-fresh juice emphasizing the importance of the knowledge to assure homogeneity of fresh juice. The research included complementary directions: Conditions that induce cloud-instability of natural- juice [IL]. Evaluate purification schemes of protein [USA]. Identifications of proteins, pectin and neutral sugars ([IL]; Structure of the cloud components using light and electron microscopy and immuno-labeling of PME, high-methoxyl-pectin (HMP) and low-methoxyl-pectin (LMP); Molecular weight of calcium sensitized pectins [US]; Evaluation of the products of PME activity [US]. Fractions and size distribution and cloud components [IL-US]. The optimal pH activity of PME is 7 and the flocculation pH of the cloud is 3-4. Thus, the c roles of PME, proteins and pectins in the cloud instability, were studied in pH ranges of 2- 7. The experiments led to establish firstly repeatable simulate conditions for cloud instability [IL]. Thermostable PME (TS-PE) known to induce cloud instability, but also thermolabile forms of PME (TL-PE) caused clarification, most likely due to the formation and dissolution of inactive :. PE-pectin complexes and displacement of a protective colloid from the cloud surface [US]. Furthermore, elimination of non-PME protein increases TS-PE activity, indicating that non-PME proteins moderate PME activity [US]. Other experiments Concomitantly with the study of the PME activity but promotes the association of cloud-proteins to pectin. Adjusting of the juice pH to f 7 retains the cloud stability and re-adjusting of the pH to 40% DE reacts to immuno-labeling in the cloud fragments, whereas

Integrated Design Optimization for Long Span Steel Transfer Truss at Redevelopment of Hong Kong Kwong Wah Hospital. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, agosto de 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/icass2020.p.365.

Texto completo
Resumen
Long-span steel trusses are increasingly used in high-rise buildings to replace reinforced concrete thick transfer plate due to light weight and high load-bearing capacity. To support multi-stories above the steel transfer truss, a comprehensive method based on second-order direct analysis method has been applied for optimization design of long-span steel transfer truss in the Redevelopment of Hong Kong Kwong Wah Hospital (KWH) – Phase 1. In the project, a 35m long-span steel transfer truss is adopted at the 3rd to 5th floors to support the above 15-story reinforced concrete structure. Innovative technologies such as the integrated global and local optimization, the integrated design and construction have been explored and made to achieve better uniformity and harmony in structure. In particular, twin trusses with better structural performance, less fabrication cost and ease of constructability are studied and finally adopted in main trusses to replace original single trusses. The optimal scheme has brought both cost and time saving in fabrication, construction, operation and maintenance stages.
