Resumen
This chapter analyzes the emergence of antiblack violence in Kansas in the 1860s and 1870s. It argues that a dominant “Free State narrative” that has traditionally interpreted Kansas as a locale of historically benign race relations has failed to reflect the intensity of Reconstruction-Era racism in a Southern Plains state that was born amid antebellum sectional agitation over the slavery question. In the aftermath of the war, white Kansas made a mockery of the Smoky Hill and Republican Union's optimism, unleashing a campaign of violence aimed at enforcing their supremacy over blacks in the young state. The dichotomy between the Union's wartime optimism and its assessment of reality thereafter finds its parallel in the historiography of Kansas.

Resumen
The Thesis describes the main parameters of lighting quality evaluation and comparison of light output efficiency of different light sources, development of three LED street luminaires, and light output and LED power supply efficiency analysis. A classification of street lighting systems has been developed. The developed new lighting systems have been experimentally tested in real conditions at several test sites. As a result, a control system for lighting systems and LED luminaires has been developed that is adaptive to traffic intensity, using motion sensor data and dynamically recalculating the required lighting class, thus achieving maximum energy efficiency and ensuring the required traffic safety.

Resumen
Brightness of an object is not determined solely by physical intensity of light reflected from the object, but it is also affected by spatial structure of the surrounding light. In the new brightness illusion introduced by Hong and Kang, on the other hand, brightness of a stationary object can be greatly altered by the presence of another object that is moving around the stationary one. This novel brightness illusion sheds light on the question of how interaction among visual objects affects their appearance. This chapter discusses these concepts, including possible neural mechanisms, and explores implications for other illusions, including motion-induced blindness, among others.

Resumen
Photon detectors transform information, carried by light, to an electrical analogue. Signals contain information on the time of occurrence and the intensity in terms of the number of photons involved. Photon rates may be constant with time, slowly varying, or transient in the form of pulses. The time response is specified in terms of some property of the pulse shape, such as its rise time, or it may be expressed in terms of bandwidth. Light detector applications fall into two categories: imaging and non-imaging; however, only the latter are considered. Detectors can be further divided into vacuum and solid state devices. Vacuum devices include photomultipliers (PMTs), microchannel plate PMTs (MCPPMTs), and hybrid devices in which a silicon device replaces the discrete dynode multiplier. PIN diodes, avalanche photodiodes (APDs), pixelated silicon PMTs (SiPMs), and charge-coupled devices (CCDs) are examples of solid state light detectors.

Resumen
Accustomed to conducting low-intensity warfare before 1914, the Indian Army learnt to engage in high-intensity conventional warfare during the course of World War I, thereby exhibiting a steep learning curve. Being the bulwark of the British Empire in South Asia, the ‘brown warriors’ of the Raj functioned as an imperial fire brigade during the war. Studying the Indian Army as an institution during the war, Kaushik Roy delineates its social, cultural, and organizational aspects to understand its role in the scheme of British imperial projects. Focusing not just on ‘history from above’ but also ‘history from below’, Roy analyses the experiences of common soldiers and not just those of the high command. Moreover, since society, along with the army, was mobilized to provide military and non-military support, this volume sheds light on the repercussions of this mass mobilization on the structure of British rule in South Asia. Using rare archival materials, published autobiographies, and diaries, Roy’s work offers a holistic analysis of the military performance of the Indian Army in major theatres during the war.

Mulligan, Jeffrey B. Illusory Variations in Apparent Dot Brightness Induced by Density Modulations. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780199794607.003.0056.

Resumen
When small, closely spaced dots are moved closer together, they appear brighter. The effect is observed for dot spacings of half a degree of visual angle or less and can be cancelled either by dimming the dots themselves or adding a compensating modulation to the background. The effects are easily observed and challenge current models of brightness perception. This illusion demonstrates that we are unable to judge the brightness of a small dot independently of the total amount of light falling in its local neighborhood. All of the dots are rendered with the same intensity, but the dots appear brighter in the regions where the density is higher.

Wilson, Andrew. Trade across Rome’s Southern Frontier. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198790662.003.0019.

Resumen
This chapter explores the interplay between political and military events and the evolution of trade between the Sahara and Roman territory in North Africa. It reassesses the chronology of Roman expeditions into the Sahara in the Flavian period, arguing that the expedition of Septimius Flaccus took place in AD 77–81, and that Julius Maternus’ expedition must have occurred in 82–5. In the light of the evidence from fieldwork in southern Libya since the late 1990s, the chapter looks at the development of Saharan trade in antiquity, the relations between Roman frontier systems and the control of trade routes, and the fluctuations in intensity of trade over time, and considers the extent to which the Roman state may have been interested in customs duties from Saharan trade.

Resumen
Owing to the overwhelming amount of often sensitive data hitting contemporary users of networked devices almost everywhere, this volume’s two keynote addresses deal with the security and ethical problems of the increasingly intelligent and autonomously acting devices in our environment. Then, light is shed on theoretical, algorithmic, technical and security aspects of big data analytics, data mining, information retrieval and machine learning. As no other area of computer science and engineering, autonomous systems accelerate the development of new systems’ hardware and highly specialised applications with an unprecedented intensity. Thus, the corresponding topics addressed in this book range from computer architectures for embedded systems dedicated to safety-related automation applications and designed for verifiability and correct operation over approaches to suppress electromagnetic interferences and to Interpret experimental data to questions related to their design and develo...

Texto completo
Resumen
Prostate cancer is among the most commonly diagnosed cancers among men, ranking second in cancer globally and first in Western countries. There are marked variations in incidence globally, and its incidence must be interpreted in the context of diagnostic intensity and screening. The uptake of prostate-specific antigen screening since the 1990s has led to dramatic increases in incidence in many countries, resulting in an increased proportion of indolent cancers that would never have come to light clinically in the absence of screening. Risk factors differ when studying prostate cancer overall versus advanced disease. Older age, African ancestry, and family history are established risk factors for prostate cancer. Obesity and smoking are not associated with risk overall, but are associated with increased risk of advanced prostate cancer. Several additional lifestyle factors, medications, and dietary factors are now emerging as risk factors for advanced disease.

Resumen
The role of emotion in clinical education and practice is discussed, drawing upon thinkers such as Derald Wing Sue, John Dewey, Joanna Shapiro, and others. Focusing on Alice Munro’s short story “The Floating Bridge,” different themes of classroom discussion are described, as well as an in-class writing exercise including examples of participant responses. Several questions and themes are explored: How does exploration of judgment in readers’ response to a literary text offer insight into the role of judgment in a clinical context? What is the effect of hearing the various emotional responses of other readers in enhancing an appreciation of diverse perspectives? How might we understand this classroom/workshop in light of John Dewey’s description of an aesthetic “experience” of particular clarity and intensity? And finally, what are the consequences of such pedagogical approaches integrating attentiveness to emotion for healthcare training and practice?

Resumen
The WTO case law has considered that measures relating to the processes and production methods (PPMs) of imported products by the importing country are not GATT-incompatible per se but the precise conditions applicable to such measures remain unsettled. This debate on the justifiability of trade restrictive measures by the importing country may be analysed in the light of competing visions of the future. While in the free traders’ imagination the free trade increases states’ wealth and thus enables them to address environmental problems, environmentalists seek to prevent catastrophic futures, which could occur through certain production practices. A form of ideal future might also be discovered in the acknowledgment of sustaintable development as one of the objectives of the world trading system. These different and partly competing visions of the future may be a way to explain the intensity of the PPM debate and the evolution and fluctuation of the case law in this field.

Rai, Shirin y Anand Prakash. Indian Debates on the International Left: Selected Writings of Lajpat Rai. SAGE Publications India Pvt Ltd, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.4135/9789354792120.

Texto completo
Resumen
This book traces the Indian Left’s engagement with the international communist debates of the 1960s and 1970s, shedding new light on the fault lines within the Left as well as on its international solidarities. Lajpat Rai argued for rethinking established leftist positions, seeking inspiration in experiment and developing creative approaches for the sustainability of socialist ideas and ideals. The contemporary relevance of these debates is significant as the Left remains without a sharp response to the rise of neoliberalism and right-wing populism in India, and a failure of the Left to recognize the challenges emanating from a strongly integrated and organized finance capital on the one hand and the increasingly self-aware identity politics on the other. Democratic opposition rather than a bureaucratic thinking needs to be the backbone of any meaningful Left struggle. Lajpat Rai’s passionate writing gives expression to the spirit and intensity of political debates at the time and the role of the Left intelligentsia in comprehending, from a committed socialist angle, the shifting paradigms of an unstable world to help bring about progressive change.

Resumen
This book investigates the phenomenon of deference to Member State authorities in EU free movement law. It enquires into the decision-making latitude which the European Court of Justice grants national institutions by means of two deference doctrines: the margin of appreciation and decentralized judicial review. At the same time, it sheds light on a number of broader developments in European law. These include changes in the intensity of judicial review, the relationship between centre and periphery, the interaction between political and adjudicative processes, and the division of powers between EU and Member State courts. Drawing on an original data set of free movement cases from 1974 to 2013, the book examines how and which decisions the Court defers to national institutions. It tests the impact of twelve variables on the practice of judicial deference. The results reveal that free movement law and the internal market have substantially changed over the past four decades. The Court has scaled down its involvement in and reduced its control over Member State affairs. The book argues that these new-found ‘passive virtues’ are linked to the legal, political, and institutional changes that have taken place in the EU.
