The two libraries and studies that follow are the products of an exploration into the problematic relation of man to nature. The work specifically examines the fact that while we are unquestionably a part of nature we are, at the same time, separated from it by our self-awareness. We exist as both symbolic and physical beings. As Christian Norberg-Schulz notes, we are precariously situated between the earth and the sky. Focusing on the fundamental elements of light and shadow, the projects explore the issues of separation and inclusion. It is hoped that a glimpse of the innate terror, wonder and beauty of our daily existence may be revealed. The work deals specifically with the making of layers and edges while accentuating spatial flow and continuity. The desire is to bring the library patron into close contact with nature while simultaneously emphasizing a profound separation. Complementary to this is an interest in highlighting a perception of leaving and returning. Reading involves leaving one's present awareness in order to pursue another that is revealed through the pages of a book. One may gain a new perspective on the world through one's literary ventures. Regardless, however, of the distance one may symbolically travel one must always return to the immediacy of one's present situation. Seemingly endless possibility is balanced by the confinement imposed by one's own mortality. In each project the visitor moves through layers of light and space, crossing a small, enclosed courtyard before reaching the main body of the library. Once inside, he regains a view of the courtyard as he sits down by the window to read. By emphasizing distance through layering, the visitor is withdrawn from the hectic cityscape and focused on the subtle interplay of light and shadow on simple concrete walls and on the fluttering leaves and branches of a tree. It is hoped that by withdrawing the visitor from the city and reminding him of his peculiar relation to nature he may renew his awareness of the human condition.

Here is an excerpt from the book's Preface by the author, William Arms, dated June 2005: This online edition of Digital Libraries is an updated version of the book of the same name published by the M.I.T. Press in January 2000. I am extremely grateful to the press for giving me permission to place it online even while the book is still in print. The field of Digital Libraries is moving rapidly. Most of this book was written in 1998 and many sections are now seriously out of date. In particular: * In the few years since the book was written, there have been some major developments. Important topics that need to be updated or included for the first time include the emergence of XML, the dominance of Google, reference linking, the Internet Archive, the Open Archives Initiative, and many more. * Numerous details need to be brought up to date. * A few projects have come to an end and a few topics have proved to be less important than expected. They need to be deleted or give less emphasis. * The book does not have a bibliography, because, only a few years ago, nobody had confidence in the longevity of URLs. The impact of conference attendance is shown to consist of three key themes: informational; social; and affective impact. In addition, the study found nine factors that can influence the impact conference attendance can have on the delegate and on their institution, and it presents connections between key themes of impact and influencing factors.

This research examines the development of virtual libraries in Commonwealth libraries in Australia in 1998-1999. The background to the study lies in some of the current issues in the information sector, and government responses to those issues. The study begins by considering the nature of the Australian Commonwealth Government, reviewing what government libraries are and whom they serve, and examining the future trends expected to affect Commonwealth libraries. The current state of virtual library research is then reviewed, and the need for research in the Commonwealth library sector examined. The author reviews the virtual library concept as expressed in the literature in the field, determines what a virtual library is, and gives consideration to why virtual libraries are being developed. The issues that affect and are affected by virtual library development are then examined. Based on this, a model of virtual libraries is formulated, along with a brief consideration of the possible application, importance and problems associated with each element of the model. The research design and methods that were used to gather information for this study are then outlined, along with the inherent limitations of the research model. Following this, the findings from a survey of virtual library development in Commonwealth libraries are discussed. The author then conducts some analysis of these responses, and makes comparisons between different Commonwealth library responses, as well as comparisons with virtual library studies conducted in American and Australian academic libraries. The research concludes by attempting to reach some conclusions about Commonwealth virtual library development and the validity of the proposed model of virtual libraries. Flowing from this, recommendations are made for further research in this field.

When building an application, native or web-based, you can be faced with the dilemma of finding an external library that will fit your needs. This thesis investigates the problem from a commercial viability standpoint. A new Compliance Reporting System needed a chart library to create appealing dashboards and reports. The aim of the thesis was to develop a generic method for finding, comparing and testing software libraries. The method was developed making use of multiple phases which were then applied to different chart libraries for the Compliance Reporting System. The devised method did not result in the desired outcome of finding a library for the Compliance Reporting System. It did, however, contain a number of successful steps. The first set of prerequisites was used to define relevant search terms. The second set of prerequisites reduced the selection of libraries. The adaptability tests examined the APIs. It was also found that the quality of documentation and public interface of the library can influence the possibility of successful utilization. Testing the extendibility would also have been beneficial. As for chart libraries in general, a lexicon of standardized terminology would be of great benefit.

The design of Digital Library Systems (DLSes) has evolved overtime, both in sophistication and complexity, to complement the complex nature and sheer size of digital content being curated. However, there is also a growing demand from content curators, with relatively small-size collections, for simpler and more manageable tools and services to manage their content. The reasons for this particular need are driven by the assumption that simplicity and manageability might ultimately translate to lower costs of maintenance of such systems. This research proposes and advocates for a minimalist and simplistic approach to the overall design of DLSes. It is hypothesised that Digital Library (DL) tools and services based on such designs could potentially be easy to use and manage. A meta-analysis of existing DL and non-DL tools was conducted to aid the derivation of design principles for simple DLSes. The desig n principles were then mapped to design decisions applied to the design of a prototype simple repository. In order to assess the effectiveness of the simple repository design, two real-world case study collections were implemented based on the design. In addition, a developer-oriented study was conducted using one of the case study collections to evaluate the simplicity and ease of use of the prototype system. Furthermore, performance experiments were conducted to establish the extent to which such a simple design approach would scale and also establish comparative advantages to existing designs. In general, the study outlined some possible implications of simplifying DLS design; specifically the results from the developer-oriented user study indicate that simplicity in the design of the DLS repository sub-layer does not severely impact the interaction between the service sub-layer and the repository sub-layer. Furthermore, the scalability experiments indicate that desirable performance results for small- and medium-sized collections are attainable. The practical implication of the proposed design approach is two-fold: firstly the minimalistic design has the potential to be used to design simple and yet easy to use tools with comparable features to those exhibited by well-established DL tools; and secondly, the principled design approach has the potential to be applied to the design of non-DL application domains.

This thesis aims to investigate the development and functions of public libraries in Rome and the Roman world. After a preface with maps of libraries in Rome, Section I discusses the precursors for public library provision in the private book collections of Republican Rome, and their transfer into the public domain with the first public libraries of Asinius Pollio and Augustus. Section II contains three 'case studies' of public libraries' different roles. The Augustan library programme is used in Ch.II.l to examine the role of imperial public libraries in literary life and the connections between Rome's libraries and those of Alexandria. Chapter II.2 concentrates on the libraries of Trajan's Forum to explore the intersection of imperial public libraries and monumental public architecture. This chapter responds to an important recent article by arguing for the continued identification of the Forum's libraries with twin brick buildings at its northern end, and suggests a series of correspondences between these libraries and its other monumental components. The conclusions of this chapter are important when considering the public libraries of the wider empire, several of which seem to have been inspired by the Trajanic libraries. Chapter II.3 considers imperial public libraries and leisure by looking at the evidence for libraries within bath-house complexes, concluding that their presence there is consistent with the archaeological and epigraphic evidence and fits in well with what we know of the intellectual and cultural life of these structures. Section III examines various aspects of the practical function of Roman public libraries: their contents (books and archives), division into Latin and Greek sections, provisions for shelving and cataloguing, staff, usership, architectural form, decoration, and housing of works of art. The picture that emerges is of carefully designed and functional buildings intended to sustain public, monumental, and practical functions. Section IV uses a variety of texts to examine the way in which libraries were viewed and used. Ch. IV. 1 discusses the evidence for use of libraries by scholars and authors such as Gellius, Galen, Josephus, and Apuleius. Ch. IV.2 examines parallels between library collections and compendious encyclopaedic elements within Roman literature and considers how library collections came to be canon-forming institutions and vehicles for the expression of imperial approval or disapproval towards authors. The channels through which this imperial influence flowed are investigated in Ch. IV.3, which looks at the directors and staff of the public libraries of Rome. The final section (V) of the thesis concerns public libraries outside the city of Rome. Provincial libraries provide a useful case study in 'Romanisation': they reveal a range of influences and are shown to embody local, personal, and metropolitan imperial identities. There follows a brief conclusion, and a bibliography. There are also five appendices of numismatic and epigraphic material discussed in the text. This material has not been adequately or completely gathered elsewhere and is intended to assist the reader; where appropriate it includes illustrations, transcriptions, and translations.

As New York' subway has adapted to changes in population, routing, and technology, numerous platforms have been abandoned - left as vestigial spaces within functioning stations. Despite their disuse, these spaces have enormous latent potential. This project couples two circulatory infrastructures in the city, public libraries and public transit, to reclaim three such platforms as sites for a new institution -- the Open Library. This institution seeks to extend the historical development of the library with a greater focus on access, knowledge production, and user-agency while also acknowledging the mobility inherent in the modern city and providing opportunities for interaction and circulation among people and artifacts. Located on abandoned platforms at Columbus Circle, Canal Street, and Brooklyn Bridge Stations, these libraries are designed such that the space of the library functions as a diagram of the institution. Each is an open, linear space formed between walls which function as reinvented stacks. Rather than a container designed solely according to the program of the book, here, each stack pairs a glass wall toward the subway with a wood wall facing the library while varying the character and separation of the pair according to the library's numerous programs -- sometimes only wide enough for books and acoustic baffling while at other times bulging to accommodate an entire room or a sky-lit planter. The result is a series of interventions within the subway that questions the relationship between knowledge production and consumption, provides places of interaction among people and artifacts, and instigates a physical and intellectual renovation of both subway and library.

The protease thermolysin has been used directly to synthesise dipeptides from Fmoc-protected amino acids on a PEGA1900 solid support. The thermolysin-catalysed solid phase synthesis of longer peptides is reported. Fmoc-protected peptides as long as hexamers (poly-L-leucine) and tetramers (poly-L-phenylalanine and poly-L-tyrosine) were enzymatically synthesised. In each case enzymatic synthesis of peptides resulted in the formation of a library of peptides varying in length, the formation of which was caused by “scrambling” by the enzyme. Due to the reversible nature of the enzyme catalysed peptide bonds, it was believed that the aforementioned solid phase peptide libraries may be exploited to generate dynamic peptide libraries. From the Juliá-Colonna asymmetric epoxidation it is known that chalcone undergoes non-covalent interactions with the amino terminus of poly-L-leucine. Chalcone was therefore employed as a suitable template for the PEGA1900 immobilised poly-L-leucine libraries. However, it was found that the Fmoc-protecting group used in these libraries inhibited binding of chalcone to poly-L-leucine. As an alternative, unprotected poly-L-leucine libraries were generated in solution phase from dileucine using thermolysin. The catalytic activity of poly-L-leucine library members and poly-L-phenylalanine library members in the Juliá-Colonna epoxidation was investigated.  These investigations demonstrated that the peptide amplified by chalcone in the dynamic combinatorial libraries displayed an improved catalytic activity in comparison to other library members. This indicates that dynamic peptide libraries may be exploited as a tool for identifying potential catalysts for the Juliá-Colonna asymmetric epoxidation.

TLS (Transport Layer Security) has an important part in encrypting the connections on the Internet today. SSL (Socket Layer Security) is the deprecated and dangerous version of TLS. SSL should not be used anymore. There are many protocols developed that use TLS. For example: HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure), FTPS (File Transfer Protocol with support for TLS) and IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol). All the protocols using TLS have also got many different implementations in different programming languages and libraries. This thesis researches the tools used to test how different (client-) libraries implement TLS. This thesis also researches the known TLS/SSL vulnerabilities. Digital libraries are an integration of complex computer and information systems that could benefit from a formal approach to design. There are various design aspects to consider in a digital library; a crucial aspect is security. Security often is a requirement in digital libraries that should be considered during the design process and not as an add-on feature. 5S provides a DL modeling framework, to define all the aspects of a digital library. It covers the different formats and types of digital objects stored, how they are grouped and organized, what sequence of operations occur in the digital library, how the objects will be represented, and who is part of the digital library community. However, the 5S descriptive language (5SL) previously did not cover the essential security requirements in a digital library. The goal of this research is to extend the 5S framework to describe the security requirements in digital library. An XML schema was developed to describe the necessary security requirements in a digital library, and some of the essential features of the digital library design. This work explains the key security requirements needed in a digital library from the 5S perspective and how the framework can be extended to include these requirements. The extended 5SL was applied to a case study on the Egyptian University Libraries Consortium.

Digital Libraries (DLs) are software systems specifically designed to assist users in information seeking activities. Stemming from the intersection of library sciences and computer networking, traditional DL systems impose library philosophies of structure and management on the sprawling collections of data that are made possible through the Internet. DLs evolve to keep pace with innovation on the Internet so there is little standardization in the architecture of such systems. However, in attempting to provide users with the highest possible levels of service with the minimum possible effort, many systems work collaboratively with others, e.g., meta-search engines. This type of system interoperability is encouraged by the emergence of simple data transfer protocols such as the Open Archives Initiative?s Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). Open Digital Libraries are an extension of the work of the OAI. It is proposed in this dissertation that the philosophy and approach adopted by the OAI can easily be extended to support inter-component interaction within a componentized DL. In particular, DLs can be built by connecting small components that communicate through a family of lightweight protocols, using XML as the data interchange mechanism. In order to test the feasibility of this, a set of protocols was designed based on a generalization of the work of the OAI. Components adhering to these protocols were implemented and integrated into production and research DLs. These systems were then evaluated for simplicity, reusability, and performance. On the whole, this study has shown promise in the approach of applying the fundamental concepts of the OAI protocol to the task of DL component design and implementation. Further, it has shown the feasibility of building componentized DL systems using techniques that are a precursor to the Web Services approach to system design.

Greek academic libraries have followed a different development path from that of libraries in West Europe and North America; rather than steady development, they have stagnated for many years and then made marked leaps of progress. The situation changed in 1996, with the involvement of the Greek academic libraries in the EC's Second Community Support Framework (SCSF) programme, which helped them to modernise their services, implement new technology and employ qualified staff. This study seeks to investigate the ways in which the electronic library has affected Greek academic libraries and librarians. The study has four central themes: firstly it reviews the notion of the electronic library. Secondly, it investigates the impact that Information Technology (IT) and Electronic Information Resources (EIR) have on Greek academic libraries. Thirdly, it examines in depth the impact of IT and EIR on librarians and looks into their training needs. The last theme focuses on the view of institutional staff concerning libraries and librarians. The survey shows that even though the SCSF programme has helped libraries to improve services and implement new technology, there are still libraries that encounter problems with the use of technology and many have limited access to EIR. On the other hand, libraries that manage to provide quality services based on new technology, still encounter problems relating to a limited number of PCs and limited website development. Furthermore, library staff made limited use of the available EIR. From the survey it became clear that even though many librarians had attended a training programme concerning EIR, the majority of them mentioned that they urgently needed retraining. From the interviews with librarians and institutional staff, it became apparent that libraries and librarians have made significant progress and managed to change and improve library's environment and services. Additionally, they agreed that library staff have improved their profile and established themselves in the academic community as information providers. As a result the majority of academics trust librarians with the use of IT and EIR and most of them agree that they can be in the forefront in developing services such as building a digital library, that will affect the whole academic community. This is the only research which has documented the significant changes in Greek academic libraries with the advent of EIR. It has sought to understand the impact on Greek librarians and to explore their changing role in Greek universities, as there has been marked progress in the improved working relationship with academic staff and an improved status for librarians.

Many studies worldwide have been done on job satisfaction in various subject fields including librarianship. The theoretical framework for this study refers however only on the Job Characteristics Model (JCM) (1976) of Hackman and Oldham. The reason why this model was chosen was because this model was the most appropriate model given the nature of the study, even though there are other models available. A brief overview of the other theoretical models namely; Maslow's (1943) hierarchy of needs and Herzberg's (1954) two factor theory of motivation are discussed as a starting point of this research study. Research librarians work under stressful conditions given the need to produce successful end results.

A new method of drug discovery, the pseudo-dynamic combinatorial library, is described. The technique involves expanding on the dynamic combinatorial library method, where a reversible synthetic reaction is carried out in the presence of a target. In the pseudo-dynamic combinatorial library, this reversible reaction is separated into two irreversible steps. The independent control of the two steps leads to superior selectivity in the screening process. A model system based on peptidic inhibitors of carbonic anhydrase was developed and studied. The synthesis of a series of new carbonic anhydrase inhibitors is described. Amino acids with sulfonamide and sulfamide functional groups, which are known to bind to carbonic anhydrase, were prepared. The synthesis of a series of active esters attached to solid support are described. The tetrafluorophenyl esters are shown to be ideal for amide bond formation in aqueous media. The properties of this class of active esters were investigated. Initial studies on a static library screening method are reported. The design and results of a series of dynamic combinatorial library experiments are described.

Private Universitäten haben diese Probleme in weit geringerem Maße. Unter Studierenden, Lehrenden und Universitätsbeamten ist durchaus die Ansicht verbreitet, dass Universitätsbibliotheken eine entscheidende Rolle in Lehre, Forschung und Studium spielen. Man nimmt allerdings auch zur Kenntnis, dass die Universitätsbibliotheken in Kenia, besonders diejenigen der staatlichen Universitäten, keine wirkungsvollen Dienstleistungen erbringen. Dies hat zur Entwertung ihrer Rolle in der Hochschullandschaft geführt. Die Studie zeigt, dass die moderne Informations- und Kommunikationstechnik in die kenianischen Universitätsbibliotheken Einzug gehalten hat. Doch ist die Entwicklung zum einen durch die Finanzierungslücken behindert worden, sodass Computer nicht angeschafft und Netze nicht aufgebaut werden konnten, zum anderen durch das Fehlen von geschultem EDV-Personal und durch die kümmerliche Telekommunikations-Infrastruktur im Lande. Diese Untersuchung kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass Maßnahmen erforderlich sind, die Situation der Universitätsbibliotheken in Kenia zu verbessern - dies auch als ein Weg, die Qualität des Universitätsstudiums in Kenia zu steigern. Diese Maßnahmen umfassen zunächst die Aufnahme einer langfristigen Planung auf allen Gebieten bibliothekarischer Arbeit. Zweitens sollten die leitenden Bibliothekare die zentrale Bedeutung der Bibliotheken hervor heben, welche ihnen im Zusammenhang der gesamten Universität zukommt. Um nutzbare Quellen der Information zu bleiben, müssen die Universitätsbibliotheken in Kenia, die moderne Informations- und Kommunikationstechnik einsetzen. Die Anwendung neuer Informations- und Kommunikationstechnik kann den Bibliothekaren an den Universitäten helfen, besseren Zugang zu örtlichen und zu globalen Informationen zu schaffen, zum Beispiel durch elektronische Media und Internetzugang.
This study argues that the provision of library services in Kenyan public universities is characterised by extremely inadequate resources in terms of funds, information materials, equipment and staff. Private university libraries experience these problems albeit to a lesser degree. Although there is widespread opinion among students, lecturers as well as university administrators that university libraries play a critical role in the teaching, research, and learning activities, there is also awareness that university libraries in Kenya, especially those in public universities are not effectively providing services which has limited their role in research and learning in the university. Finally, modern information and communication technology is being incorporated in the management of university libraries in Kenya. However, this trend has been hindered by first, lack of funds to purchase equipment such as computers and set up networks, secondly by lack of skilled personnel in information technology, and finally by poor telecommunications infrastructure in the country. There is therefore need for adoption of strategic planning in all areas of library management and to remain viable sources of information, university libraries in Kenya have to make use modern information and communication technology. This will enable university libraries to facilitate better access to local and global information for example through electronic and internet media.

The investigation was undertaken to establish, in the first place, whether it is correct to assume that university library managers in South Africa do understand the main tenets of marketing. Secondly, the investigation was undertaken to determine whether these librarians actually do implement some or all of the principles of marketing in the management of their libraries. The study was carried out in two parts: a literature survey and an empirical investigation. The investigation was confined to university libraries in South Africa. The literature survey of the relevant marketing literature had a twofold purpose. In the first place, the marketing of libraries could only be properly appreciated within the context of understanding what is meant by marketing. Secondly, it was an underlying assumption of the investigation that in order to determine whether the management of South African university libraries did understand and apply the principles of marketing, the questions posed to them in the survey would of necessity have to reflect the principles, concepts, terminology and techniques of marketing, as established in the literature survey. The survey of marketing literature therefore endeavoured to establish clearly the main tenets of marketing and the techniques of marketing planning, the broadened marketing concept which has extended marketing to non-profit organizations, and, the significance of the interactive relationship of services marketing. A survey of the relevant literature of librarianship was undertaken to gain an insight into how marketing was perceived by the Anglo-American library world. It was against this broader background of the literature of librarianship that the South African experience was considered. As part of the empirical investigation a questionnaire was constructed and mailed to the respondents in order to determine whether the principles of marketing are understood and implemented by university libraries in South Africa. The analysis of the data obtained from the questionnaire indicated that the management of South African university libraries have a general understanding of the principles of marketing, although at present only a small minority have an in-depth knowledge of it. From the analysis of the data it is also apparent that South African university library managers to a greater or lesser extent do carry out some of the main activities of marketing, although, for the present, they do not necessarily consider that they are implementing formal marketing planning in their libraries. Only a small minority of university libraries are actually engaged in some formal marketing activities.

Public libraries throughout the United States are increasingly using technological platforms to provide information resources to students across socioeconomic environments. Advances in technology have affected the way in which we learn with the advent of online learning, e-learning and shared learning experiences that have become ever present in schools and libraries. How relevant is the public library in the initiatives that are directly related to the much-needed support of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM)? This study explores the public library as a free, public space for informal learning and the democratic ideals of success as it relates to science education, achievement, and national innovation. The purpose of this study was to determine the challenges that the public library experiences in the implementation of STEAM programs, strategies, and practices employed by the public library in managing the implementation, and how the public library measures success in the process. The questions explored are an (a) examination of best practices in developing strategies for implementation and the challenges that public libraries face as they relate to the implementation and development of STEAM programs, (b) the challenges that public libraries face as they relate to the implementation and development of informal learning programs focused on STEAM, (c) how public libraries measure success within informal learning programs related to STEAM, and (d) what lessons have been learned in the development of informal learning spaces focused on STEAM in the public library.

The motivation for this work is based on two recognized research issues for digital libraries. One is the need for interlinked and semantically rich information spaces where relationship information is of particular importance. The other is the serviceoriented architecture of digital libraries. The digital libraries of the future will consist of smaller and independent systems that each will provide different functionality and access to different contents.

This work defines and explores a service for managing and using explicit relationships – the Digital Library Link Service. The service implements an instance-oriented approach to relationships that enables any kind of typed relationship to be created among the information objects of digital libraries. The service can be used to create consistent information spaces on top of digital library repositories and enables an associative organization and retrieval of information objects.

This work shows that the use of a fine-grained relationship model implemented as distributed objects enables distribution of the relationship network while still being able to support constraints and maintain consistency. The cost of this, however, is a complexity that can reduce performance and scalability due to the call latency of network communication. A prototype is developed that utilizes caching in order to solve this. Tests conducted show that this technique significantly contributes to the scalability and efficiency. This is particularly important when the relationship information is distributed across different processes with high calllatency in between.

The work further presents a prototype application for enhancing bibliographic catalogues with the rich set of relationship types defined in the bibliographic information model proposed by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions – the FRBR model. The Digital Library Link Service is used to implement an index that facilitates the navigation of bibliographic relationships in order to explore bibliographic entities along the paths laid out by the FRBR model. This demonstrates the applicability of the service as a flexible tool for associative organization of information objects.

The main applications of the service are limited to systems with a relaxed requirement in terms of automatic processing of larger sets of relationships. The main access paradigm explored for interacting with relationships is by navigation. The need for automatic and efficient processing of a large relationship network, e.g. for the purpose of indexing, can be supported by extending the system with additional functionality. Another recognized problem is that the use of CORBA references to address long-term persistent information can cause referential integrity problems. One possible way to solve this is to assigning objects globally unique identifiers that later can be used to recover from referential integrity problems.

This thesis focuses on the relationship between public libraries, that is, those library services provided by local authorities under the 1964 Public Libraries and Museums Act for use by the general public, and research conducted in such services by professional library staff - 'practitioner-researchers'- within the local government context. The aims of the study are: • To examine the relationships between local authorities, public library services, and research activities. • To review and evaluate contemporary research activities in public library services carried out by practitioner-researchers. • To identify and investigate the use of particular research methods and techniques used by practitioner-researchers. • To analyse, and provide a clear understanding of, limitations in current practice. Chapter One introduces the study and states the parameters and constraints of the research. The time period covered by this thesis is from the 1964 Public Libraries and Museums Act until April 1998. Chapter Two argues that as local government moves from a traditional model of service provision to a model of activities in support of strategic policy objectives, more attention will need to be given to 'deep' research in order to address cross-cutting issues. Chapter Three reviews the public library research scene from three perspectives, historical, thematic and current, and demonstrates the emergence of a more coherent approach with co-ordination and funding at a national level. It also shows that research methods remain undeveloped in the public library service as a whole. Research activity is largely confined to simpler issues of service development and does not extend to research addressing the impact of the service. Chapter Four outlines and explains the methodology used for the fieldwork. It demonstrates the rigour incorporated in the naturalistic inquiry approach, verifies the sample, and describes the process of data analysis. Chapter Five examines current practice in public library services through a series of twenty interviews with Chief Librarians. An overview of the findings is followed by a more detailed analysis which draws from the qualitative data. The analysis is set in context, making links with the earlier literature reviews. The closing section broadens the discussion to consider the influence of research on policy. Chapter Six synthesises the themes of the thesis. A description of the new agenda, and an analysis of its implications for research and organisational structures, enables a reconsideration of the rationale for research in local government. It is argued that simply demonstrating the relevance of the service is not enough; the real contribution of research must be in terms of policy development. Approaches to research, and in particular research methods, are reviewed to assess their suitability and a way forward is identified.

The quality of metadata in a digital library is an important factor in ensuring access for end-users. Several studies have tried to define quality frameworks and assess metadata but there is little user feedback about these in the literature. As collections grow in size maintaining quality through manual methods becomes increasingly difficult for repository managers. This research presents the design and implementation of a web-based metadata analysis tool for digital repositories. The tool is built as an extension to the Greenstone3 digital library software. We present examples of the tool in use on real-world data and provide feedback from repository managers. The evidence from our studies shows that automated quality analysis tools are useful and valued service for digital libraries.

This thesis describes the design, development, and evaluation of a social digital library to support users in finding information from a user-based point of view. This particular research project has been motivated by the fact that there has been very little research on the social features in digital library interfaces. This research aims to design a novel digital library interface by applying the concepts of social features to digital libraries. Also, the thesis investigates whether the functionalities in the social digital library help participants to accomplish different task types with minimum effort. Social features here refers to clustering users' interacting in a virtual community along with social information such as reviews, the number of recommendations and items/ viewed items by other people. In order to gain an insight into the social features that are useful for users to compt~te search tasks, I began with the development of The Victorian Times Digital Library by using PHP & MySQL. Initial design interfaces were tested by usability tests in order to overcome usability problems. Based on participants' feedback, the chosen features were presented in the social digital library and represented in different screens. These interfaces were then evaluated by several usability tests using an iterative design approach. Also during an iterative phase of design, the interfaces were revised based on Information Foraging Theory in order to increase strong information scent. The final version of the social digital library was then evaluated against a conventional interface in an effectiveness test. I performed an experimental study to examine the use of features in digital libraries to perform the tasks. A total of twenty four participants were recruited to perform various tasks on both interfaces and to rate their preferences. The outcomes of the effectiveness test were positive, with half of participants (12 out of 24) preferring the social interface and the rest of participants preferring the traditional one. Also, the results showed that the social digital library was able to help participants to accomplish different types of task with minimum time and effort. This was considered as a good result given the quality feedback from the participants. Also, some of findings emphasized the importance of social activities and look and feel over a set of social features.

This study contributes to knowledge and practice in the area of e-book management in academic libraries. The thesis is a three part study, two preliminary studies and the main study, with each part making a distinct contribution. As practitioners and researchers embark on a more extensive engagement with e-books and while the e-book market is developing rapidly, it is increasingly important that some agreement is reached regarding the definition of the term 'e-book'. Hence, the first study reported a content analysis of 36 e-book defmitions in order to determine a valid and representative definition of 'e-book'. The study proposed a two-part definition of the term reflecting both the persistent characteristics of e-books, and their dynamic and developing nature, driven largely by the changing technologies. Despite the growth in the e-book market, the e-book industry has been researched much less than the e-journal market. An overview of the e-book marketplace is a valuable starting point for academic library decision making about the management of e-book collections. Hence, the second study provided an overview of key e-book marketplace players and their services, by analysing the web sites of nine publishers and eleven aggregators as a basis for profiling their main services. The findings showed that the e-book market is changing. The majority of ebook vendors market typically to libraries, and publishers are increasingly using e-aggregators to distribute their titles. Collections of e-books are expanding gradually and e-book business models are complex and range considerably. Academic libraries are changing and e-books have been incorporated into their collections. The demand for e-books by library users is increasing and academic librarians are planning expansion of their e-book holdings. E-books are an exciting and controversial area for librarians but they pose various challenges to academic libraries. Nevertheless, the impact of ebooks on collection management practices is under-documented. Furthermore, the future of ebooks in academic libraries is a topic that has not been extensively investigated in the current literature. Therefore, the main study of this thesis provided in-depth insights into e-book management activities and what are the associated issues and challenges faced by the librarians. In addition, the study identified and validated the main stages of the e-book management process in academic libraries. Moreover, the main study gathered opinions on the factors that will affect the future and adoption of e-books in academic libraries. The survey approach was employed for the main study. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with 32 librarians working in seven UK academic libraries, each with different sizes and with different levels of engagement with providing e-book services. The card-game method was incorporated into the interview process mainly in order to test and establish the process of e-book management in academic libraries. Overall, the findings confirmed past and recent studies on the management of e-books, whilst offering additional insights into specific practices and challenges. The central and most significant part of the study is the proposed e-book management framework of activities and the associated issues and challenges in academic libraries. The e-book management process is complex and practice needs further development at all the stages of the process

This thesis initially set out to explore how heritage can be sustained in independent libraries. Noting a lack of sustainability research in the independent library sector, the remit of the study was extended to consider how the concept of sustainability has been interpreted in museums, libraries, and archives (MLAs) more widely. A critical analysis of the literature in this area revealed the shortcomings of the dominant triple bottom line approach which does not put enough emphasis on the role of MLAs in sustaining heritage. However, it is subsequently argued that increasing recognition of the importance of cultural sustainability offers the opportunity to address this issue. A Conceptual Model for the Levels of Sustainability in MLAs is proposed, seeking to provide the opportunity to further explore the relationship between MLAs and cultural sustainability. Based on the assumption that MLAs play a mediating role between the heritage that they sustain and external cultural sustainability goals, this model is used to guide the collection of data in independent libraries. Through a combination of document research and qualitative interviews a comprehensive account of the cultural heritage assets of independent libraries in the UK and USA, their potential contributions to cultural sustainability, and the challenges to achieving these contributions is established. This provides the basis for the proposal of the Conceptual Framework for Achieving Cultural Sustainability in Independent Libraries. The contributions of the thesis are twofold. Firstly, the Conceptual Model for the Levels of Sustainability in MLAs provides a new perspective to consider the relationship between MLAs and sustainability which reasserts the importance of their role in sustaining heritage. Secondly, the Conceptual Framework for Achieving Cultural Sustainability in Independent Libraries demonstrates the complexities of the relationship between an MLA organisation and cultural sustainability beyond one-way contributions to external cultural sustainability goals. By revealing the multi-layered and often conflicting sustainability requirements of MLAs to preserve cultural heritage, ensure the effective management of the internal culture of their organisations, and demonstrate commitment to external cultural sustainability goals, it provides a new tool by which to extend our understanding of the relationship between MLAs and cultural sustainability.

Through billions of years of evolution, nature has assembled a multitude of polymeric macromolecules capable of exquisite molecular recognition. This functionality is achieved by the precise control of amino acid sequence during the assembly of proteins, producing three-dimensional macromolecules with key residues anchored in the correct positions to interact with their targets. Developing ‘wholly-synthetic’ macromolecular analogues which mimic this function presents a considerable challenge to chemists, who lack the ‘biological machinery’ used by nature in the precision-assembly of polymers. In addressing this challenge, familiar chemical concepts, such as combinatorial methods and supramolecular interactions, have been adapted for application in the macromolecular arena. Working from a limited set of residues, synthetic macromolecules have been produced which display surprisingly high binding affinities towards target proteins, even possessing useful in vivo activities. These observations are all the more surprising when one considers the heterogeneity inherent within these synthetic macromolecular receptors, and provoke intriguing questions regarding our assumptions about the design of receptors.

Information management systems (digital libraries/repositories, learning management systems, content management systems) provide key technologies for the storage, preservation and dissemination of knowledge in its various forms, such as research documents, theses and dissertations, cultural heritage documents and audio files. These systems can make use of cloud computing to achieve high levels of scalability, while making services accessible to all at reasonable infrastructure costs and on-demand. This research aims to develop techniques for building scalable digital information management systems based on efficient and on-demand use of generic grid-based technologies such as cloud computing. In particular, this study explores the use of existing cloud computing resources offered by some popular cloud computing vendors such as Amazon Web Services. This involves making use of Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) to store large and increasing volumes of data, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) to provide the required computational power and Amazon SimpleDB for querying and data indexing on Amazon S3. A proof-of-concept application comprising typical digital library services was developed and deployed in the cloud environment and evaluated for scalability when the demand for more data and services increases. The results from the evaluation show that it is possible to adopt cloud computing for digital libraries in addressing issues of massive data handling and dealing with large numbers of concurrent requests. Existing digital library systems could be migrated and deployed into the cloud.

As new and emerging classes of information systems applications the applications become more overwhelming, pressing, and diverse, several well-known information retrieval (IR) problems have become even more urgent in this “network-centric” information age. Information overload, a result of the ease of information creation and rendering via the Internet and the World Wide Web, has become more evident in people’s lives. Significant variations of database formats and structures, the richness of information media, and an abundance of multilingual information content also have created severe information interoperability problems-structural interoperability, media interoperability, and multilingual interoperability. The conventional approaches to addressing information overload and information interoperability problems are manual in nature, requiring human experts as information intermediaries to create knowledge structures and/or ontologies. As information content and collections become even larger and more dynamic, we believe a systemaided bottom-up artificial intelligence (AI) approach is needed. By applying scalable techniques developed in various AI subareas such as image segmentation and indexing, voice recognition, natural language processing, neural networks, machine learning, clustering and categorization, and intelligent agents, we can provide an alternative system-aided approach to addressing both information overload and information interoperability.

In this era of the Internet and the World Wide Web, the long-time topic of digital libraries has suddenly become white hot. As the Internet expands, particularly the WWW, more people are recognizing the need to search indexed collections. Digital library research projects thus have a common theme of bringing search to the Net. This is why the US government made digital libraries the flagship research effort for the National Information Infrastructure (NII), which seeks to bring the highways of knowledge to every American. As a result, the four-year, multiagency DLI was funded with roughly $1 million per year for each project (see the "Agency perspectives" sidebar). Six projects (chosen from 73 proposals) are involved in the DLI, which is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Advanced Research Projects Agency, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. This issue of Computer includes project reports from these six university sites: Carnegie Mellon University, University of California at Berkeley, University of California at Santa Barbara, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Michigan, and Stanford University.

Grant funding offers one way to foster innovation, and, for large-scale projects, it may be essential; however, there are limited opportunities to secure such funding and many small projects may not warrant it. When grant funding is sought, the library's proposal is strengthened if it can demonstrate prior effort and expertise in the proposal area. Every opportunity to secure grant funding should be seized; however, libraries should not limit themselves to this funding option. This paper provides some brief guidelines for encouraging technical innovation without depending on grant funding.
