Texto completoThis dissertation examines the construction of meaning and the crosslinguistic influence on the representation of the lexical signification and discursive meaning of the words work and travail. This study is based on definitional discourse and significations such as they are proposed by speakers articulating their metalinguistic semantic knowledge in the context of experimental research. The cultural concept of work is analysed by using Galatanu’s theoretical framework The Semantics of Argumentative Possibilities (SAP). A French/English constractive study allowed us to determine the similarities as well as the differences between the representations of the lexical signification and discursive meaning of the words “work” and “travail” proposed by four groups of speakers. Each group of speakers having its own linguistic profile (two groups of monolingual speakers – Francophone and Anglophone, one group of bilingual speakers whose native language is French and who speak English, and one group of bilingual speakers whose native language is English and who speak French) presents the opportunity to not only compare the variations between the representations of the lexical signification and discursive meaning of the words “work” and “travail”, but also to take note of the potential influence that competence in a foreign language can have on these representations. The second part of this dissertation includes an analysis of the representation of the insult loser as used in the United States. Inspired by the presence of an element linking work and said insult, the choice to present loser lends itself to exhibiting the discursive mobilisation of the social values instilled in the words work and loser

Texto completoSupport verbs have been studied to a great extent in the Lexicon-Grammar framework. This thesis aims at filling the gap of studies of support verb constructions in African languages, as well as that of comparative studies among languages of different families in order to validate the notion of the universality of support verbs. Indeed our research has demonstrated that support verbs do exist in Ewe, a Kwa language of the Niger-Congo family for which there had been no prior study of this notion. Moreover, a comparative study also revealed to us that support verb constructions in English, French and Ewe share certain syntax-semantic properties such as the reduction of the support verbe and its reconstruction through a relative clause. The three languages also shared the property of support verbs being agents of nominalization. However, there are also differences in these constructions. One of the differences is the fact that determination plays an important role in support verb constructions in English and French. However, determination is not an important factor in support verb constructions in Ewe. Other differences that were reflected in our thesis include the differences in number and frequency of support verb constructions (SVCs) in the tree languages, as well as differences in the interdependency links among the various elements of SVCs in the three languages. On the whole, English and French seem linguistically close and there were few syntax-semantic differences. On the other hand, Ewe displayed more differences – which supports the concept of different language-specific local grammars suggested by the Lexical-Grammar framework

Texto completoThis thesis is a linguistic study of the international lexicon of homosexuality, taking as its central assumption that internationalisms are the product of lexical borrowing and must be studied in a historical comparative perspective. Following a critical review of different approaches to loanword studies (philological vs. sociolinguistic), which places the problem within the more general realm of the neologism, the aim was to assess to what extent the shared homosexual lexicon in several European languages – French, Italian, Spanish, English and German – results from borrowing (loanwords or calques), by testing the hypothesis that most of these denominations can be traced back to a single origin, rather than being independently constructed. The path of each lexeme in each language is followed in order to highlight the points of contact between languages. The nomenclature consists of 13 monographic series: sodomy, against nature, buggery, bardash (with berdache), tribade, pederasty, sapphism, lesbian, uranism, inversion, homosexuality (with heterosexuality, bisexuality, transsexuality), gay, queer. Each series is divided by language so that the representatives of each of the five languages are treated on their own terms. Through a wealth of textual examples – many never before studied – and an analysis drawing on a comprehensive reading of the lexicography and major secondary sources, this thesis presents numerous corrections, clarifications, antedatings and discoveries on the lexicon under study

Texto completoIn this trilingual study, we discuss the passage of a linguistic sign from the current lexicon to the terminology of macroeconomics. Indeed, the semantics of a linguistic sign in the current lexicon and in terminology seem, at first sight, identical. Nevertheless, it is only a detailed analysis, semantic differences begin to emerge. We propose methods in order to analyze the different semantic features of a linguistic sign as it passes from the current lexicon to the terminology of macroeconomics.As for compound terms, we only deal with terms composed of two elements. The treatment begins with the base element according to categories and subcategories based on the general semantic features or on the origin of the base element. In addition, we divide the compound terms by using models based on the syntactic structure. Thus, a chapter is devoted to the treatment of compound terms composed of a noun and an adjective and another is dedicated to the treatment of compound terms composed of tow nouns. The different structure of compound terms encourages us to approach them differently. To explain this, we note that the base element, in compound N1-A1, tends to associate with an adjective in a preferential or obligatory way. Thus, we use the concept of "polarization" to deal with the behavior of compound terms N1-A1 where the base element polarizes the associated adjectives. On the other hand, the compound terms N1-N2 undergoes a kind of dilution where the basic element can be replaced by a synonym without changing concept. Moreover, the compound N1-N2 can change its structure without changing its concept. So we use the term "dilution" to describe this behavior.On the other hand, we offer some analysis to understand the semantics of the genitive case regarding the compound terms in Arabic N1-N2. To do this, we replace the genitive case by prepositional phrases to clarify the semantics of the structure of annexation. This also allows making a semantic categorization for the genitive case

Texto completoThis research is set within the fields of third language acquisition and multilingualism with a focus on developing our understanding of how multilingual competence functions. The research attempts to determine if the languages of a multilingual play distinctive roles in the acquisition of a new language specifically regarding the lexical and syntactic components in crosslinguistic interactions, and whether there is convergence between these phenomena. The research also examines the metalinguistic and crosslinguistic activities which allow learners to manage and comprehend the target language. The data for this research was collected from eleven case studies of speakers of Spanish and English with a variety of levels of proficiency in French. Participants were required to complete three speaking tasks. Approaches sourced from research from the fields of third language acquisition and language contact were utilised and developed to capture the complexity of the interactions, the typological relationship among the languages in contact, and the varying levels of the languages under examination. Using quantitative and qualitative analysis this research demonstrates how multilingual competence operates. The data indicates that participants activate all their languages to different degrees relating to different types of crosslinguistic interactions, syntactic properties and level of language. Participants also typically resort to their metalinguistic and crosslinguistic awareness to help them comprehend the target language and manage their output by the use of cognates, crosslinguistic consultations and inferences

During theoretical and practical research work, various aspects of bank credit have been examined : its definition, its recipients, conditions for extending credit some of which are related to the borrower's character, solvency and collateral security and the others to economic factors such as the business cycle, the bank's cash position, the prevailing credit policy, credit control instruments namely quantitative and qualitative credit controls, the minimum reserve requirements, the discount rate policy, the open-market operation and moral suasion. The "source" language of the glossary developed is english, given its predominance in business circles and international organizations. The entries selected and forming this glossary deal with bank credit as studied during research work. Their translation into french cannot be considered a final one. These entries are supported by contexts illustrating their practical use and are sometimes followed by their synonyms

Texto completoThis doctoral dissertation tackles a cognitive approach to metaphor in olfaction. Metaphor appears in an olfactory perspective. Minor perception of smell, both historical and cognitive, mirrors an olfactory discourse reduced to the bare minimum. There are few specific terms referring to smell. From this observation, the objective of the metaphor in the sense of smell is twofold: to develop a better perception of smell on one hand and to convey new perceptions thanks to smell on the other hand. This twofold objective matches a double metaphoric positioning of smell: an entity which either fits into a target domain or source domain. Smell, as target domain, reveals a great amount of metaphors benefitting the sense of smell. Thanks to metaphor, smell gains its own trajectory, substance, space and time, ontology and power. Smell becomes more observable and confirms the metaphor in its perceptive status. Smell, as source domain, entails recurrent perceptions: negative, approximative, and integrative. The study of these three motifs in light of contemporary cognitive theories of metaphor attests the motivation of metaphor in the field of smell, and then confirms the invention of meaning through metaphor. The examination of olfactory metaphors, using an English and French corpora in addition to an in-depth study of both metaphor and smell, reveals a large metaphoric spectrum, which can be attributed to the double metaphoric positioning of smell

Texto completoIn the early 80s, new terminological trends and theories emerged, along with new analysis methods. These new approaches opposed, completed, intersected with and combined with other disciplines outside the world of terminology, and thus created a new viewpoint of terminology and gave birth to new research leads among which a large number remains un- or very rarely exploited. I intend, throughout my thesis, to develop a few of these newborn ideas, by applying them to the space science terminology. By beginning with a ‘classical’ analysis of space science terminology – concept analysis and their relations, term analysis, elaboration of field trees, etc -, I paved the way towards a more advanced analysis that takes into consideration the concept ‘dimension’ and studies the repercussions of this ‘dimension’ notion of the fundamental elements of terminology, to move later on to knowledge evolution and diachronic terminology. Science progress and knowledge evolution also implicate the appearance of new concepts that demand the creation of terms in order to appoint them. After having given a fair idea of the terminological crisis the Arabic language is going through, I presented various terminological works of the Arab world, highlighting the creation of new terms and their modes of creation, and I finally elaborated a model of a trilingual terminological in the domain of space science
