Texto completoThis proposal was developed due to the need for studies concerning the process of inferentiation, in order to contribute to an improvement of the study of communication through the understanding of the inferential process. The study made possible the understanding of how the neo and post-gricean theories describe the communication and the way in which this description is applied in the communicative dialogues. In addition, it was possible to observe the importance of understanding the historical and philosophical bases, allowing a delineation of the description and the pragmatic objects developed in this work, recognizing the proximity in the semantic-pragmatic relations, highlighting the standard implicatures of Levinson (2000) as responsible for importance of this approach for the understanding of the levels of meaning, verifying how the Neo and Post-Gricean theories occur with regard to generalized conversational inferences by means of a comparison between these pragmatic perspectives and the projection of the theory that best corresponds to the communicative practice to this type of implicature, advancing in the understanding of how the process of implication of the generalized implicatures occurs, understanding that, although the post-gricean approach better predicts the interpretation of this type of implicature, it is necessary to recognize the importance of Neo-Griceans of the scalar implicatures from lexical scales.

The Pragmatics, a sub-area of Linguistics which integrates this work, studies the language in use, devoting itself to the understanding of the real meaning, including concepts such as inferences, context and subjectivity. The work developed here is a bibliographical one, constructed in such a way as to form a consistent theoretical basis on the generalized conversational inferences, in order to present a meta- analysis of selected articles involving these inferences and theories presented. The general objective of this dissertation is to compare the post and Neo-Gricean approach of cases of inferences, focusing on generalized conversational implicatures, in selected experiments, with specific objectives to understand the histories and philosophical bases related to Pragmatics, to discuss concepts relevant to the Gricean theory (Grice, 1957/1975), Post-Gricean (Sperber & Wilson, 1995) and Neo-Gricean (Levinson, 2000), observe the properties of inferences in theories and analyze pragmatic experiments concerning generalized conversational implicatures in order to understand how the inference process occurs in communicative practice and how the interpretation of generalized implicatures in human communication occurs. This proposal was developed due to the need for studies concerning the process of inferentiation, in order to contribute to an improvement of the study of communication through the understanding of the inferential process. Texto completoThis qualitative study investigated the reasons why American priests resigned their ministries. Two separate analytical lenses were used. One lens included a thematic analysis of reasons for resignation, and a second lens involved a developmental study of the men applying Levinson's psychosocial theory of adult development. Regarding the developmental analysis, the intent of this study was not to confirm or refute Levinson's theory but to understand the development of the sixteen men by applying his theory. Nevertheless, the results of the developmental analysis seemed to support Levinson's postulation of alternating structure-building and structure-changing periods but appeared to question his construct of age-linked periods especially for men in middle adulthood. Although this study supported his reported developmental tasks, it found that the men in the study dealt with some of them at a later age than postulated. Consequently, the writer concluded that Levinson's theory may need to be modified when applying it to men who have committed themselves to a Catholic professional religious life-style. The men developed differently than Levinson's sample because of the unique structure of the institutional Church and priesthood that seemed to delay the men's attainment of responsibility and independence. Several implications and recommendations for further research were suggested. [TRUNCATED]

Texto completoThis research examines the relationship between depression and locus of control among 240 Greek old people and among 247 Greek students. Two questionnaires are used to do this research. The Pichot and Al's (1984) self-evaluation symptoms of depression questionnaire and the Levenson's internal-external locus of control scale (1973). The factor analysis in both old people and students subjects showed the same factor that others researchers were fonded. Our results support the hypothesis that there is a significant positive relationship between the level of depression and the belief in an external control and a significant negative relationship between the level of depression and the belief in an internal control, both for the old people and the students. Analysis of variance shown that the students are more external than the old people. The elderly are more internal and shown less depression. The relationship between depression and factors socio-cultural shown that some factors are significantly associed to depression but some others not

Texto completoDeutschmann, Mats. "Apologising in British English". Doctoral thesis, Umeå University, Modern Languages, 2003. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-43.
Texto completoThe thesis explores the form, function and sociolinguistic distribution of explicit apologies in the spoken part of the British National Corpus. The sub-corpus used for the study comprises a spoken text mass of about five million words and represents dialogue produced by more than 1700 speakers, acting in a number of different conversational settings. More than 3000 examples of apologising are included in the analysis.
Primarily, the form and function of the apologies are examined in relation to the type of offence leading up to the speech act. Aspects such as the sincerity of the apologies and the use of additional remedial strategies other than explicit apologising are also considered. Variations in the distributions of the different types of apologies found are subsequently investigated for the two independent variables speaker social identity (gender, social class and age) and conversational setting (genre, formality and group size). The effect of the speaker-addressee relationship on the apology rate and the types of apologies produced is also examined.
In this study, the prototypical apology, a speech act used to remedy a real or perceived offence, is only one of a number of uses of the apology form in the corpus. Other common functions of the form include discourse-managing devices such as request cues for repetition and markers of hesitation, as well as disarming devices uttered before expressing disagreement and controversial opinions.
Among the speaker social variables investigated, age and social class are particularly important in affecting apologetic behaviour. Young and middle-class speakers favour the use of the apology form. No substantial gender differences in apologising are apparent in the corpus. I have also been able to show that large conversational groups result in frequent use of the form. Finally, analysis of the effects of the speaker-addressee relationship on the use of the speech act shows that, contrary to expectations based on Brown & Levinson’s theory of politeness, it is the powerful who tend to apologise to the powerless rather than vice versa.
The study implies that formulaic politeness is an important linguistic marker of social class and that its use often involves control of the addressee.

The thesis presents a comparative study of multichannel Filtered x least mean square (MCFXLMS) and Levinson-based lattice algorithm. Two different control modes of the Multichannel feedforward ANC systems are considered in a highly reverberant environment with four noise sources as tested data. Simulations of the study were conducted by using Matlab. The results show that global noise control were achieved with multiple speakers and sensors used. According to the simulation results, MCFXLMS provides the same silent zones as the Levinson-based lattice algorithm, and both algorithms create larger enough silent zones to satisfy the requirements in the frequency below 500Hz. On the other hand, the Levinson-based lattice algorithm achieves higher average noise reduction, especially in broadband noise cases. Further, since the Levinson based lattice algorithm is not an adaptive one, so it is not suitable for complex and non-stationery conditions.

The patrol boat radiates electromagnetic waves from the radar and analyzes the radar echo to determine whether the object is in the area of the radar detection. However, the land and sea clutters may also occur in the radar echo and make the radar detection tend to be wrong. Compared the sea clutters with the land clutters, the sea clutters due the sea reflection behaves the time-varying random process is a dominant interference in the radar detection for the patrol boat. Moreover, the radar detection problem becomes more difficult when the moving target in the sea is in the low speed for the moving target in such a situation may be hidden in the strong sea clutters. To solve the detection problem of low-speed target hidden in the strong sea clutters, this thesis proposes the module-based Levinson-Durbin architecture for the strong sea clutters to distinguish the low-speed target out of the sea clutters. This architecture employs the Levinson-Durbin algorithm combined with the infinite impulse response (IIR) filter to realize the autoregressive (AR) model-based high-resolution spectrum estimator. The advantage of the AR spectrum estimator can detect the low-speed target by using short coherent integration time. Moreover, the cell-averaging constant false alarm rate (CA-CFAR) is adopted as for the selection of the detection algorithm. Finally, the top-down design flow is employed to implement the module-based spectrum estimator with Levinson-Durbin algorithm and IIR filter. To this end, we first use the MATLAB software to verify the validity of the proposed algorithm, and then use the System Generator of Xilinx to realize the hardware design.

Politeness has been such a hot topic in pragmatic research with many studies examining the phenomenon under different contexts, and approaches. However, so far there has been a few studies investigating politeness in the context of dissertation defenses - a very important academic genre but under researched. This study aimed to explore politeness strategies employed by examiners, advisors and candidates in dissertation defenses in two Taiwan universities, specifically the Question and Answer sessions. The study based on Brown and Levinson (1987) politeness theory which gives a comprehensive taxonomy of strategies for analyzing the phenomenon. The purpose of this research was to shed light on what strategies participants employed to achieve politeness in a context of dissertation defenses, which contain a lot of face threatening, face maintaining and face supporting acts (Haugh & Watanabe, 2009). The results showed that examiners and advisors used negative politeness most, then positive strategies and bald on record to manage face; while candidates preferred positive politeness than negative ones, and no bald on record instance was found. The genre, power and social distance were argued to influence on the participants’ selections of politeness strategies.
