Texto completoBinding communication and the hypocrisy paradigm are two strategies promoting environmental behaviours. Despite a high adherence to the “ecological norm”, people do not actually apply it in their everyday life. Our research objectives are theoretical and applied ones. On the theoretical level, we compare the applicability and efficiency of the two models and state the most favourable conditions for their use. We examine in particular the role of persuasion in binding communication and the conditions favourable to observe a behavioural change in the hypocrisy paradigm. On a practical level, we aim at informing the professionals about the appropriate procedures they can use to encourage behavioural change.Eight experimental studies are presented in order to meet these objectives. They aim at different types of behaviour through different types of protocols (in or outside the lab). We measure behavioural intentions, behavioural commitment and behaviours among samples of students and general French population (N = 812). Our results show that some of these procedures are effective in inducing behavioural change. However there are not all appropriate to every context. We highlight the efficiency of the committing procedures on behaviours. We put forward a tool to permit the selection of the best procedure according to the context in which the intervention occurs. We conclude by discussing the theoretical and applied contributions of this investigation

Texto completoThis thesis deals with the impact of agriculture on health and the environment from a behavioural economics perspective. Focusing on the controversial use of pesticides in the winegrowing industry, I demonstrate the importance of considering the trade-offs made by economic actors in order to understand the obstacles hindering a shift to sustainable production. On the consumer side, I experimentally measure the competitive effect of certification (organic farming) and technological innovations (e.g. resistant grapevines, reduction of sulphites) on consumers’ preferences. I observe that consumers are partly willing to review their taste requirements in exchange for high environmental quality level, but that their motives are essentially health-oriented, generating contradictory signals towards producers. Besides, selecting the best products is hampered by the little information consumers are provided with. On the supply side, I argue that ability to meet demand is strongly limited by the inertia of the production system. This inertia can be attributed to risk aversion but again, to a large extent, to a lack of information, rather than being, as is often suggested in an agricultural context, the result of imitation. This lack of information this time concerns the various options available upstream, in this instance, on the part of winegrowers. I then provide guidelines for public regulatory policies, at global level or at more local level of corporate governance, to enable a match between supply and societal demand

Texto completoThe Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector is constantly growing due to the increasing number of Internet users and the democratization of digital services, leading to a significant and ever-increasing carbon footprint. The share of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to ICT is estimated to be between 1.8% and 3.9% of global GHG emissions in 2020, with a risk of almost doubling and reaching more than 7% by 2025. Data centers are at the center of this growth, estimated to be responsible for a significant portion of the ICT industry's global GHG emissions (ranging from 17% to 45% in 2020) and to consume approximately 1% of global electricity in 2018.Numerous leverages exist and can help cloud providers and data center managers to reduce some of these impacts. These leverages can operate on multiple facets such as turning off unused resources, slowing down resources to adapt to the real needs of applications and services, optimizing or consolidating services to reduce the number of physical resources mobilized. These leverages can be very heterogeneous and involve hardware, software layers or more logistical constraints at the data center scale. Activating, deactivating and orchestrating these heterogeneous leverages on a large scale can be a challenging task, allowing for potential gains in terms of reducing energy consumption and GHG emissions. In this thesis, we address the modeling, evaluation and orchestration of heterogeneous leverages in the context of a large-scale cloud data center by proposing for the first time the combination of heterogeneous leverages: both technological (turning on/off resources, migration, slowdown) and logistical (installation of new machines, decommissioning, functional or geographical changes of IT resources).First, we propose a novel heterogeneous leverage modeling approach covering leverages impacts, costs and combinations, the concepts of an environmental Gantt Chart containing leverages applied to the cloud provider's infrastructure and of a leverage management framework that aims to improve the overall energy and environmental performance of a cloud provider's entire infrastructure. Then, we focus on metric monitoring and collection, including energy and environmental data. We discuss power and energy measurement and conduct an experimental comparison of software-based power meters. Next, we study of a single technological leverage by conducting a thorough analysis of Intel RAPL leverage for power capping purposes on a set of heterogeneous nodes for a variety of CPU- and memory-intensive workloads. Finally, we validate the proposed heterogeneous leverage modeling approach on a large scale by exploring three distinct scenarios that show the pertinence of the proposed approach in terms of resource management and potential impacts reduction

Texto completoEncouraging pro-environmental behaviours is deeply needed due to the significant impact of human activity on climate change. Part of the population is already engaged in virtuous behaviours, but many obstacles are still preventing climate action. It is even more significant in a tourism context since pro-environmental behaviours tend to fade during holidays. Researchers are still struggling to identify an effective approach that could lead to long-term responsible behaviours. However, the literature dedicated to transformative tourism highlights the power of the tourism experience to encourage individual transformations. To broaden existing research, this doctoral work suggests that practices experienced during a tourism activity could be transferred to everyday life and foster pro-environmental behaviours. Our empirical material is based on a longitudinal and multi-method data collection from nineteen respondents who walked several days on the Camino de Compostela. Our results first enrich the understanding of the holistic process of transformation in the context of a pedestrian itinerancy through the construction of a conceptual model exploring the dynamics of this process, the triggering factors as well as the types and duration of transformations. Our results also identify that confrontation with frugal practices during pedestrian itinerancy triggers the adoption of long-term pro-environmental practices thanks to a mechanism of transferability that encourages the transposition of frugal practices from holidays to everyday life. These results not only contribute to the literature on transformative tourism and the adoption of pro-environmental behaviours, but also make relevant methodological contributions. Our research also has a significant managerial and social impact since we invite tourism stakeholders to design frugal activities that could convince tourists to adopt more sustainable behaviours in their daily lives. This would contribute to the collective effort towards sobriety.Key words : long-term sustainable behaviour, transformative tourism, frugal practices, transferability, longitudinal study

Texto completoThe purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the study of the role of State intervention in the Mediterranean countries, and this in the promotion of the responsible approach. This doctoral work provides a general review of the study of the role of environmental factors in the context of sustainable qualified development. It discusses, among other things, changes in the perception of CSR policy in the Mediterranean region. In our study on CSR, we focus our research on both voluntary and obligatory approaches, following institutional constraints, and subject them to comparison. In doing so, we focus in particular on how the CSR concept has been strongly related to the notion of environmental sustainability. The first part of this work presents an exhaustive and critical review of the literature on responsible approaches. In the second part, which is essentially factual, we frame the empirical and institutional foundations of a green growth model. Estimation and validation are presented at the last chapter level. The results highlight the relationship between CSR and governance as regards sustainable growth and sustainable environmental-friendly growth, at the macroeconomic level. The results obtained allow us to confirm that firstly, CSR plays a positive role in order to improve the quality of the environment. Secondly, various approaches overlap and tie together to propose environmental-performance scenarios throughout the Mediterranean.Thirdly, it appears that the restrictive intervention of the state weakens CRE efficiency, added to this the impact on -CSR- of the disparity at the institutional level and between countries of different development level. Finally, according to the results obtained, we believe that the interaction between the will and the duty to carry out responsible actions could in turn constitute/ lead to a perfection in terms of ecological sustainability for Mediterranean-bordering countries

Texto completoCities consume enormous amounts of energy and resources, and generate most of the world’s CO2 emissions and waste. Demographic, urban and ecological pressures require us to re-evaluate 20th-Century urban design models, especially in China and India (750 million additional urban residents by 2030), to create more sustainable cities and societies.Applying a systems approach and industrial ecology to cities is perhaps the best way to accelerate progress. This thesis proposes a unique methodology and tools for evaluating the ecological performance of cities, and then tests them on Shanghai. Future research will focus on comparative studies of cities, based on the same variables. Once this is accomplished, it will be possible to create an Observatory of the Ecological Performance of Cities

Texto completoThe development of a Metropolis is very often associated with the construction of a vast territory, which limits it to the simple search for a pertinent perimeter or level. It implies, however, much more. The French intercommunality, that opens up to various forms of cooperation between different territorial entities, is an interesting approach in this respect. France is, indeed, often presented aborad as an example of cooperation and of decentralization, especially in countries with a strong centralizing tradition, such as South Korea. In this perspective, we will carry out comparative case studies mirroring the process of metropolisation in France and in South Korea. Our study seeks to illustrate how to structure the innovation system (IS) according to the co-construction scheme PAS, making it possible, among otherthings, to co-create an ecosystem of exchange, sharing and arbitration -and thus serving as a driving force and optimizing force in an urban system of specialization. Finally, our study aims at orienting spatial planning towards the integrated approach of sustainable development
