Texto completoThanks to the valuable advances in Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems coupled with their convergence to wireless communication systems, the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). In the WSN context, all the efforts are made in order to propose energy-efficient solutions. With the recent developments in CMOS technology, low-cost imaging sensors have been developed. As a result, a new derivative of the WSN, which is the Wireless Video Sensor Network (WVSN), has been proposed. The particularities of the video data as well as the inherent constraints of the nodes have introduced new challenges. In this thesis, we propose two cross-layer based solutions for video delivery over the WVSN. The first solution proposes a new energy efficient and adaptive video compression scheme dedicated to the WVSNs, based on the H.264/AVC video compression standard. The video stream is then handled by an enhanced version of MMSPEED protocol, that we propose and note EQBSA-MMSPEED. Performance evaluation shows that the lifetime of the network is extended by 33%, while improving the video quality of the received stream by 12%. In the second solution, we enrich our compression scheme with mathematical models to predict the energy consumption and the video distortion during the encoding and the transmission phases. The video stream is then handled by a novel energy efficient and improved reliability routing protocol, that we note ERMM. Compared to a basic approach, this solution is extending the network lifetime by 15%, while improving the quality of the received video stream by 35%

Texto completoNowadays, the proliferation of inexpensive hardware such as CMOS cameras and microphones that are able to ubiquitously capture multimedia content has led to the emergence of wireless multimedia/video sensor networks (WMSN/WVSN). As a consequence, a wide spectrum of applications can be projected in many areas and everyday life. Compared to traditional WSNs, WVSNs introduce unique challenges due mainly to the big amount of data to be captured and transmitted over a constrained network. In this work, we first propose a cluster-based (hierarchical) routing protocol called ELPC (Energy Level Passive Clustering) where the main objective is to enhance the network lifetime while handling video applications. This is achieved thanks to a load balancing feature where the role of clusterheads is alternated among candidate nodes depending on their energy level. The second contribution consists in a multipath routing protocol with interference awareness. Instead of completely suppressing interferences, our multipath routing protocol tries to minimize them through a simple algorithm without extra overhead. Multiple paths are built at once while minimizing their inter-path interferences thanks to some additional information on neighboring nodes piggybacked on the route request messages. In addition to interference awareness, we propose a multiqueue multipriority scheme where the influence of data type in a video is considered. Simulation results show that using less interfering paths combined to a multiqueue multipriority scheme allows for better video quality

Texto completoWireless Sensor Network (WSN) is the set of elements called micro-sensors able to collect data and transmit it via wireless links. In recent years and with the development of hardware elements such as CMOS cameras, the integration of multimedia content has become possible in the WSNs, that leds to the development of Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network (WMSN). The WMSNs requires short-range and high-speed wireless links that support the transmission of multimedia contents such as images and videos in indoor environments, which justifies the use of Ultra Wide Band (UWB) wireless transmission technology, more precisely the IEEE 802.15.3c standard. In order to ensure a better image/video transmission with a certain quality of service over UWB IEEE 802.15.3c system, many robust and efficient source encoders are used on our research work like JPEG and SPIHT for image transmission and H.264/AVC for video transmission. Our contributions in this manuscript focus on improving the quality of service (QoS), firstly for the case of image transmission by the application of various adaptive techniques including unequal error protection UEP at the channel encoder side and hierarchical modulation, hybrid modulation and adaptive OFDM modulation at the modulator side. Secondly, and for the case of video transmission, all the techniques previously mentioned have been applied to improve the quality of transmitted videos at the receiver side. In addition, we acted on the choice of the size of the GOP (Group of Pictures) at H.264 /AVC encoder to show the influence of the GOP size during the video transmission on the errors propagation produced by the noisy multi-path channel. The originality of this thesis is to propose effective techniques for the improvement of transmitted multimedia contents quality through UWB IEEE 802.15.3c system, more precisely the audio visual high rate physical layer mode (AV HRP) while keeping a good QoS and minimizing the rate distortion ratio and exploit the characteristics of WMSNs which are widely used to deploy services in IoT multimedia applications

Texto completoGreat research efforts have been carried out in the field of challenged multihop wireless networks (MWNs). Thanks to the evolution of the Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology and nanotechnologies, multihop wireless networks have been the solution of choice for a plethora of problems. The main advantage of these networks is their low manufacturing cost that permits one-time application lifecycle. However, if nodes are low-costly to produce, they are also less capable in terms of radio range, bandwidth, processing power, memory, energy, etc. Thus, applications need to be carefully designed and especially the routing task because radio communication is the most energy-consuming functionality and energy is the main issue for challenged multihop wireless networks. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the different challenges that govern the design of challenged multihop wireless networks such as applications challenges in terms of quality of service (QoS), fault-tolerance, data delivery model, etc., but also networking challenges in terms of dynamic network topology, topology voids, etc. Our contributions in this thesis focus on the optimization of routing under different application requirements and network constraints. First, we propose an online multipath routing protocol for QoS-based applications using wireless multimedia sensor networks. The proposed protocol relies on the construction of multiple paths while transmitting data packets to their destination, i.e. without prior topology discovery and path establishment. This protocol achieves parallel transmissions and enhances the end-to-end transmission by maximizing path bandwidth and minimizing the delays, and thus meets the requirements of QoS-based applications. Second, we tackle the problem of routing in mobile delay-tolerant networks by studying the intermittent connectivity of nodes and deriving a contact model in order to forecast future nodes' contacts. Based upon this contact model, we propose a routing protocol that makes use of nodes' locations, nodes' trajectories, and inter-node contact prediction in order to perform forwarding decisions. The proposed routing protocol achieves low end-to-end delays while using efficiently constrained nodes' resources in terms of memory (packet queue occupancy) and processing power (forecasting algorithm). Finally, we present a topology control mechanism along a packet forwarding algorithm for event-driven applications using stationary wireless sensor networks. Topology control is achieved by using a distributed duty-cycle scheduling algorithm. Algorithm parameters can be tuned according to the desired node's awake neighbourhood size. The proposed topology control mechanism ensures trade-off between event-reporting delay and energy consumption

Texto completoMultimedia applications in WSNs convey large data (image, audio and video) that requires high transmission rate and intensive treatment and therefore high energy consumption. Effectively transmit these heterogeneous flows, while ensuring their reliability and guaranteeing QoS requirements, with the limited resources available, especially in critical contexts, remains an open scientific problem. That is why, in this thesis, we are interested in aspects related to : routing, fault tolerance and interference management in WMSNs.Given the very low number of routing protocols, that have approached the experimental phase and still less those who approached it during data transmission in real time, we developed in this context, a geographic routing protocol baptised GNMF (Geographic Non-interfering Multipath Fault-tolerant),First, we improved node's selection mode used by the greedy-forwarding, to deal with local minimum problem, where a multi-criteria objective function (distance, energy and reception power) related to next-hop choice has been defined. Then, we introduced an optimization phase of built paths to eliminate loops and an adaptive approach to manage simultaneous traffic transmissions. After that, we oriented towards fault tolerance, to ensure transmitted data reliability and network connectivity. To this end, we modeled the number of lost packets during package delivery and proposed two mechanisms. The curative is used when sudden failures occurs and the preventive to anticipate batteries depletion. Both are combined with a dynamic failover strategy during alternative paths construction. Finally, we presented an interference model and a third mechanism that limits interactions between adjacent links. In addition, we also defined a path loss model in a multipairs environment (source, sink) and computed the error probability coefficient based on a distance function that separates the data flows. A new metric has been added in the objective function, related to noise sum of the active nodes that interferes on forwarding set nodes of the current node.Obtained results show the effectiveness of the proposed approaches that have been studied and validated both by simulation and on an experimental testbed

Texto completoWireless Sensor networks are attracted many activities of research and development during the last decade. Yet, the distributed behavior of a WSN remains centered on two main objectives: sensing and routing. This thesis advocates the introduction of an additional feature, which can be considered interesting from a functional point of view and potentially from the power consumption one: starting from a designer-specified requirement, implement a multiple level synergy between (groups of) nodes, based on adequate interaction. This is achieved by automatic generation and distribution of correct-by-construction code, relying on the Supervisory Control Theory. The Discrete Controller Synthesis (DCS) technique is an application of this theoretic framework. In this thesis, we show how DCS can be used for WSN. Thus, its potential is at two levels. The intra-cluster scheduling of a redundant group of sensors with specifications expressing the mutual exclusion during the activation of a sensor within a cluster, essential to save the energy within the network and then a multicriteria automatic generation of an optimal routing functionality. Specifically, an optimal path should have both a minimal length and go through nodes having maximal residual energy. The cited formal tools lean on a modelling approach based on communicating finite state machines (CFSM). The scientific challenges are generally related to the nature of the WSN as well as to its size. The DCS can only generates a monoblock controllers, while the WSN’s behavior is essentially distributed. The issue is how to distribute a global controller, who appears in the form of a logical constraint expressed on the global state of the network, into local controllers while adding the necessary synchronization to guarantee a distributed functioning equivalent to the initially generated controller
