Resumen
Leptothrix are long bacteria of rare occurrence; although these bacteria have been implicated in causing vaginal symptoms identical to candidiasis, studies on prevalence and effect on overall vaginal health are lacking. In this study, we evaluated data of women referred to a private clinic for treating vulvovaginal symptoms (n = 1847) and reassessed data of our previous and ongoing studies (n = 1773). The overall rate of leptothrix was 2.8% (102/3620), and the mean age of affected women was 38.8 ± 10.65 years (range 18−76). The majority of the women with leptothrix had normal vaginal flora (63.7% [65/102]). Leptothrix was associated with a higher risk of candidiasis (relative risk (RR) 1.90, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.1600–3.1013; p = 0.010) and a lower risk of bacterial vaginosis (RR 0.55, 95% CI, 0.3221–0.9398; p = 0.029) and cytolytic vaginosis (RR 0.11, 95% CI, 0.0294–0.4643; p = 0.002). No cases of trichomoniasis were observed. Human immunodeficiency virus infection increased the risk of leptothrix (RR 3.0, 95% CI, 1.6335–5.7245; p = 0.000). Among the women evaluated for vulvovaginal symptoms, 2.4% (45/1847) had leptothrix, and in 26.7% (12/45), leptothrix was considered the causative entity. This study suggests that leptothrix occurrence is rare; it remains unresolved if it can be a cause of vulvar symptoms.

Resumen
The provided study involves investigating chemical interactions in Leptothrix biomaterial through infrared spectroscopy. The analysis explores variations in chemical relationships based on the nature of chemical bonds and biomaterial coordinates. The primary chemical bonds identified in the biomaterial are associated with Fe-O vibrations and resonances of [OH] functional groups. Additionally, the study presents model representations detailing the formation mechanism of water molecules within the Leptothrix matrix. Model calculations for a two-vacancy cluster defect structure in Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 reveal lifetimes of 180 ps and 174 ps, respectively.

Resumen
A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, motile, non-pigmented, facultative aerobe that grew optimally at pH 6.5 and 30 °C (strain PM1T) was isolated for its ability to completely degrade the gasoline additive methyl tert-butyl ether. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that this bacterium was a member of the class Betaproteobacteria in the Sphaerotilus–Leptothrix group. The 16S rRNA gene sequence identity to other genera in this group, Leptothrix, Aquabacterium, Roseateles, Sphaerotilus, Ideonella and Rubrivivax, ranged from 93 to 96 %. The chemotaxonomic data including Q-8 as the major quinone, C16 : 1ω7c and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids and a DNA G+C content of 69 mol%, support the inclusion of strain PM1T in the class Betaproteobacteria. It differed from other members of the Sphaerotilus–Leptothrix group by being a facultative methylotroph that used methanol as a sole carbon source, and by also being able to grow heterotrophically in defined media containing ethanol, toluene, benzene, ethylbenzene and dihydroxybenzoates as sole carbon sources. On the basis of the morphological, physiological, biochemical and genetic information, a new genus and species, Methylibium petroleiphilum gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed, with PM1T (=ATCC BAA-1232T=LMG 22953T) as the type strain.

Resumen
This study investigated whether any possible bio-corrosion of pumps could occur when operating underground pumping stations in coastal regions. Groundwater in the stations was found to contain Leptothrix sp. (iron-oxidizing bacteria, IOB) and Desulfovibrio sp. (sulfur-reducing bacteria, SRB). Four different metal specimens were exposed to saline water media, where Leptothrix sp. or Desulfovibrio sp. were inoculated solely or together. The result showed that IOB not only provoke the corrosion of galvanized and stainless steels but also accelerate (by 5–10 times) the formation of zinc/iron precipitates. The SRB specifically mediated the corrosion of zinc steel to a greater extent than the IOB. In a single medium, STS 304, galvanized steel, iron and zinc steel resisted corrosion in that order. However, in the mixed culture, the metals were corroded by a factor of 2–7 more than in the single medium. On disinfection, a higher NaOCl concentration surprisingly caused increased chemical corrosion, and UV light scattering due to corrosion precipitates enhanced microbial corrosion. Consequently, the metals showed more biochemical corrosion than the control, especially in a mixed culture. In particular, the level of STS 304 corrosion was significantly higher in the presence of microbes than the control.

Resumen
In medical literature bacteria of the genera Leptotrix and Leptotrichia are often considered as identical. Actually, they are antipodes, standing very far apart from each other in evolutionary terms. The confusion arose due to morphological similarity (filamentous forms). Leptotrix is a type of iron bacteria that live in neutral and slightly acidic fresh waters with a very low concentration of organic matter. The energy metabolism of leptotrix is strictly aerobic, oxidative, and chemoorganoheterotrophic (they oxidize divalent iron ions into trivalent iron to produce energy). Its clinical role has not yet been proven. Bacteria of the genus Leptotrichia are normal inhabitants of the oral cavity, urogenital tract and intestine of humans, they are strict anaerobes (some strains are microaerophiles). They cause inflammatory diseases in patients with immunosuppression of different genesis. However, assessment of their clinical role, when they are isolated from non-sterile habitats, requires the use of a skilled ecological approach, including knowledge of the dynamics of cell numbers, the dominance of a particular species, etc. It is absolutely unacceptable to diagnose the diseases caused by leptotrichia on the base of smear microscopy results (for example, smears of discharge from urogenital tract).

Resumen
Relatively little is known about the microbial communities present in natural environments that meet physico-chemical conditions for the development of potential leaching microorganisms such as thermal ecosystems from the Chilean Altiplano. Thermophilic leaching enrichments were obtained and identified from a high altitude solfataric pound in Lirima hot springs in the Chilean Altiplano. This ecosystem is characterized by hot underground freshwaters, enriched in sulfur compounds showing pH from neutral to acidic. Microbial diversity has been scarcely explored here, and preliminary results demonstrate that hydrothermal pounds are represented by thermophilic anaerobic and acidophilic taxa. Thermophilic leaching cultures in shake flasks were obtained using ferrous iron and pyrite as energy source. The presence of Bacteria and Archaea in oxidizing enrichments was determined by PCR amplification of 16S rRNA genes. A preliminary analysis of microbial diversity using massive sequencing revealed that Bacteria were more abundant than Archaea in both enrichments. Specifically for the iron-oxidizing culture, the majority of the sequences clustered within the Proteobacteria phylum (79%). Among Proteobacteria, the proportion of Betaproteobacteria (42.2%) and Gammaproteobacteria (21.27%) was much higher than that of Alphaproteobacteria (15.5%). Within the Betaproteobacteria class, the most frequent genus was Leptothrix-like. Similar results were obtained for the pyrite oxidizing culture. Interestingly, this study shows the presence of microorganisms close to the Leptothrix genus under low pH conditions (1.7-2.8) and their capacity to grow at high temperatures with ferrous iron or pyrite as sole energy source

Resumen
Strains L10T, L108 and CIP I-2052 were originally obtained from methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE)-contaminated groundwater and from a wastewater treatment plant, respectively. All share the ability to grow on tert-butanol, an intermediate of MTBE degradation. Cells are strictly aerobic, motile by a polar flagellum and exhibit strong pili formation. Poly β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) granules are formed. The DNA G+C content is 69–70.5 mol% and the main ubiquinone is Q-8. The major cellular fatty acids are 16 : 1 cis-9 and 16 : 0 and the only hydroxy fatty acid is 10 : 0 3-OH. The major phospholipids are phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) 16 : 1/16 : 1 and phosphatidylglycerol 16 : 0/16 : 1. A significant amount of PE 17 : 0/16 : 1 is present. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of these strains are almost identical and form a separate line of descent in the Rubrivivax–Roseateles–Leptothrix–Ideonella–Aquabacterium branch of the Betaproteobacteria with 97 % similarity to 16S rRNA genes of the type strains of Rubrivivax gelatinosus, Leptothrix mobilis and Ideonella dechloratans. However, physiological properties, DNA–DNA relatedness values and the phospholipid and cellular fatty acid profiles distinguish the novel isolates from the three closely related genera. Therefore, it is concluded that strains L10T, L108 and CIP I-2052 represent a new genus and novel species for which the name Aquincola tertiaricarbonis gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is strain L10T (=DSM 18512T=CIP 109243T).

Resumen
The species of the ant genus Strumigenys Smith, 1860 from Southeast Asia are reviewed based on recent sampling efforts as well as unreported historical material from southern mainland China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. We report 42 new species records for these regions. A total of 20 species new to science are described: S. anhdaoae sp. nov., S. claviseta sp. nov., S. crinigera sp. nov., S. decumbens sp. nov., S. delicata sp. nov., S. densissima sp. nov., S. doydeei sp. nov., S. fellowesi sp. nov., S. intermedia sp. nov., S. jaitrongi sp. nov., S. liuweii sp. nov., S. longidens sp. nov., S. mediocris sp. nov., S. rongi sp. nov., S. scutica sp. nov., S. strummeri sp. nov., S. xenopilus sp. nov., S. yamanei sp. nov., S. zanderi sp. nov. and S. zhenghuii sp. nov. The descriptions of the existing species S. elegantula (Terayama & Kubota, 1989) and S. nathistorisoc Tang et al., 2019 are revised. Strumigenys formosensis Forel, 1912 syn. nov. is synonymized with S. feae Emery 1895 in the light of recently collected specimens. Three species complexes are created within the S. leptothrix-group: elegantula-complex, leptothrix-complex and zanderi-complex, based on differences in dentition. A new species group, S. nathistorisoc-group, is introduced. The key to Strumigenys of East Asia (as Pyramica) by Bolton is partially revised to accommodate species from these species groups that were described since the publication of the key. Finally, the implication of our results to the region and the current limitation of species groups and complexes of the genus is discussed.

Resumen
ABSTRACT A common form of biocatalysis of Mn(II) oxidation results in the formation of biogenic Mn(III, IV) oxides and is a key reaction in the geochemical cycling of Mn. In this study, we grew the model Mn(II)-oxidizing bacterium Leptothrix discophora SS-1 in media with limited iron (0.1 μM iron/5.8 mM pyruvate) and sufficient iron (0.2 μM iron/5.8 mM pyruvate). The influence of iron on the rate of extracellular Mn(II) oxidation was evaluated. Cultures in which cell growth was limited by iron exhibited reduced abilities to oxidize Mn(II) compared to cultures in medium with sufficient iron. While the extracellular Mn(II)-oxidizing factor (MOF) is thought to be a putative multicopper oxidase, Mn(II) oxidation in the presence of zero added Cu(II) was detected and the decrease in the observed Mn(II) oxidation rate in iron-limited cultures was not relieved when the medium was supplemented with Cu(II). The decline of Mn(II) oxidation under iron-limited conditions was not accompanied by siderophore production and is unlikely to be an artifact of siderophore complex formation with Mn(III). The temporal variations in mofA gene transcript levels under conditions of limited and abundant iron were similar, indicating that iron limitation did not interfere with the transcription of the mofA gene. Our quantitative PCR results provide a step forward in understanding the regulation of Mn(II) oxidation. The mechanistic role of iron in Mn(II) oxidation is uncertain; the data are consistent with a direct requirement for iron as a component of the MOF or an indirect effect of iron resulting from the limitation of one of many cellular functions requiring iron.

Resumen
Bioleaching and biocorrosion are based on similar biochemical processes. Microbe-surface interaction, biofilm formation and concomitant extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) production gained increasing interest in the past decades. Nowadays it is generally accepted that biofilm formation and an accompanying formation of manganese oxides by manganese oxidizing bacteria such as Leptothrix spp. account for one type of pitting corrosion of stainless steel (SS). However, little is known about biofilm formation, EPS composition of manganese oxidizing microorganisms and their influence on microbiologically influenced corrosion. Consequently, we studied biofilm formation of Leptothrixdiscophora, the biooxidation of manganese in biofilms on floating filters as well as biofilm formation on stainless steel and the involved corrosion processes. Cells were visualized by epifluorescence (EFM) or confocal laser scanning –microscopy (CLSM). Additionally, the influence of biofilm formation and biooxidation of manganese by L. discophora on the open circuit potential (OCP) and pitting potential (Epit) of stainless steel was measured using a 3 electrode setup. L. discophora grew well in biofilms on floating filters and on SS coupons and incorporated in both conditions Mn2+ in the form of MnO2 from the bulk phase into the biofilm. OCP measurements of actively manganese-oxidizing biofilms on stainless steel showed a significant ennoblement of ≥200 mV.

Resumen
Applicability of development of technology using bioreactor and floating media filter is shown. The technology is based on the biological oxidation of iron and manganese by a group of iron oxidizing bacteria (IOB). The description, the operating principle and the results of technology testing are given. If the content of iron is 4,9-5,71 mg/L, manganese - 0,12-0,2 mg/L and carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide are present, the quality of treated water meets all normative requirements. A microscopic analysis of the backwash water from bioreactor and filter was carried out. It has been established that Leptothrix type iron oxidizing bacteria are involved in the oxidation of compounds of dissolved forms of iron and manganese.

Resumen
Cervical-vaginal infections are one of the most common infections seen in women of the reproductive age group. The important infectious agents in Gardnerella vaginalis, Candida, and Trichomonas vaginalis. Pap smear cytology is used as an important screening test for various epithelial cell abnormalities and cervical cancer. It is also useful in the diagnosis of various pathogenic microorganisms causing cervicovaginal infections. To determine the prevalence of cervicovaginal infections on Pap smears, and study their cytomorphology and clinical correlation. : This is a three-year retrospective study from June 2018 to May 2021 performed on conventional Pap smears in the Pathology laboratory of a Government hospital in North India. The prevalence of various cervicovaginal infections was determined and their cytomorphological spectrum was studied. The Bethesda System of classification was followed for reporting Pap smears. All the females attending Gynaecology OPD of the hospital with various complaints were included. Females with a history of cervical cancer and unsatisfactory samples were excluded from the study. Out of the total number1344 pap smears examined during the three years, 1291 (96.058%) were reported as NILM, remaining 53(3.044%) were diagnosed as epithelial cell abnormalities and cervical cancer. Among the 1291 cases of NILM, 421(32.61%) smears were positive for specific pathogenic microorganisms. Out of, 421 smears, examined,254(60.33%) were BV followed by136 (32.30%) of candida infection. Trichomonas contributed to 22(5.22%) cases, whereas in one case (0.23%) each of Actinomyces and HSV was seen. Mixed infection by Trichomonas and leptothrix was seen in 4(0.950%) cases and Candida and leptothrix contributed to 3(0.712%) cases. Cervico-vaginal infections are an important cause of morbidity in the reproductive age group. Cervical cytology is an invaluable method to diagnose these infections. About 90% of infections are caused by Bacterial Vaginosis and Candida. All women of the reproductive age group should undergo a Pap smear examination for timely diagnosis and proper management of cervicovaginal infections.

Resumen
Dolníček (2020) described several occurrences of bog iron (limonite), which according to his article originates in recent streams by chemical precipitation, without the important role of microorganisms on this process. However, similar occurrences of reddish or orange slime, frequently accompanied by oil-like films floating on the water, are according to many papers ascribed to the biogenic iron oxidation by bacteria. To solve the origin of such precipitates, we have sampled similar materials in four places near Ostrava - Hrabová, two close to Řepiště and Staříč, and also two sites in the vicinity of Hulín investigated by Dolníček (2020). In all cases, scanning electron microscopy of dried samples at the low vacuum (ca 50 Pa) revealed a dominant share of tubular sheaths of the Leptothrix-Sphaerotilus group of bacteria. The prevailing diameter of 1.5 to 1 μm should point to genus Leptothrix, while those with a diameter up to 2.5 μm (genus Sphaerotilus) are far less common. Spiral chains of Gallionella were recognized in all samples, as well as rare pennate diatoms. Space between bacterial filaments is predominantly filled with densely stacked particles micrometer to submicrometer in size, sometimes with oval, fibrous, or tabular shape. It might be both decomposed material of previously mentioned genera and some other small-sized bacteria. Energy-dispersive spectroscopy shows dominant content of iron and oxygen, with a minor admixture of Si, Ca, Al, and P. Powder X-ray diffraction of such microbial mats is showing clastic admixtures (quartz, feldspar group minerals, illite-muscovite, and kaolinite) and two broad low-intensity peaks of ferrihydrite. Only sample D from Řepiště locality shows an absence of ferrihydrite and the presence of hematite and magnetite and/or maghemite. Therefore, we demonstrated that bacterially-induced precipitation plays a major role in the genesis of such recent bog iron occurrences and there are ways how to characterize such material by both biological and mineralogical procedures.

Resumen
The role of certain types of bacteria is quite decisive in the formation of iron and manganese precipitates. Bacteria and other organisms participate in the precipitation of soluble iron and manganese in many different ways. The production of hydrogen peroxide seems to be an important phase in the formation of the precipitates. Bacteria produce hydrogen peroxide as an intermediate or an end product of metabolic processes (Gorlenko etal., 1983). Iron and manganese bacteria are typical gradient organisms, growing in a sharp gradient between oxidized and reduced environments. Iron precipitating types are oligotrophic and manganese precipitating types need higher concentrations of organic compounds. Manganese precipitating bacteria are eutrophic. Iron bacteria are sessile, and grow attached to the solid surfaces of filter media. Typical iron and manganese precipitating bacteria in groundwaters are Gallionella, Leptothrix, and Metallogenium.

Resumen
Understanding the molecular underpinnings of manganese oxidation in Leptothrix discophora SS1 has been hampered by the lack of a genetic system. In this report, we describe the development of a genetic system for L. discophora SS1. The antibiotic sensitivity was characterized, and a procedure for transformation with exogenous DNA via conjugation was developed and optimized, resulting in a maximum transfer frequency of 5.2×10−1 and a typical transfer frequency of the order of 1×10−3 transconjugants per donor. Genetic manipulation of L. discophora SS1 was demonstrated by disrupting pyrF via chromosomal integration with a plasmid containing a R6Kγ origin of replication through homologous recombination. This resulted in resistance to 5-fluoroorotidine, which was abolished by complementation with an ectopically expressed copy of pyrF cloned into pBBR1MCS. This system is expected to be amenable to a systematic genetic analysis of L. discophora SS1, including those genes responsible for manganese oxidation.
