Texto completoA finales del siglo XX, una serie de experimentos que estudiaban neutrinos provenientes del Sol o de rayos cósmicos que colisionaban contra la atmósfera terrestre mostraron que estas partículas pueden cambiar su sabor, comportándose de una manera que el Modelo Estándar prohíbe explícitamente. El camino hacia la comprensión de las propiedades de los neutrinos, que podría revelar la siguiente estructura subyacente de la naturaleza, ha guiado desde entonces a miles de científicos. El escenario al inicio de esta tesis estaba impulsado por la última sorpresa experimental de los neutrinos: los primeros indicios que apuntan hacia su fuerte violación de la simetría materia-antimateria o CP. El objetivo de este trabajo es abordar el problema desde una perspectiva global para evaluar rigurosamente si las medidas punteras de física de sabor leptónico están apuntando hacia una nueva violación fuerte de una simetría de la naturaleza. Para ello, se combinan los resultados de todos los experimentos de neutrinos relevantes. Se evalúa cuantitativamente el estatus de la mezcla leptónica y de la violación de CP, que los datos apuntan a que podría ser máxima. Este indicio está dominado por un exceso de neutrinos electrónicos en el experimento de neutrinos con acelerador a larga distancia T2K. Dentro del paradigma de tres neutrinos masivos, y con el resto de parámetros de mezcla leptónica medidos con precisión en varios experimentos, el exceso solamente se puede acomodar mediante una violación de CP grande. A pesar de esto, tres neutrinos masivos es solamente una extensión mínima del Modelo Estándar: podría haber otra nueva física enmascarando los resultados, ya que la violación de CP leptónica aún no se ha medido de manera directa y concluyente. Por ello, esta tesis confronta la nueva física que podría afectar a los experimentos de transiciones de sabor de neutrinos con datos experimentales. La violación de CP inducida por las masas de los neutrinos y por la mezcla leptónica resulta ser bastante robusta. Tal y como se explora en este trabajo, los experimentos complementarios de interacción coherente entre neutrinos y núcleos juegan, y continuarán jugando en el futuro, un papel importante a este respecto.

Texto completoThe T2K experiment is an off-axis long baseline neutrino flavour oscillation experiment. In T2K, the neutrino beam produced by an accelerator at J-PARC, Tokai, is detected using the Super Kamiokande (SK) detector, Kamioka, located 295 km away from Tokai. The accelerator produce a very pure nu_mu beam. During the propagation of neutrinos between their production point and SK they may change flavour. This effect is the neutrino flavour oscillation. The main objective of T2K is to measure some parameters describing the neutrino flavour oscillation, in particular of theta13 and deltaCP. This determination is performed by measuring the nu_mu -> nu_e oscillation probability, via the nu_e appearance search. In 2011, T2K was the first experiment to observe nu_e appearance and published a 2. 5 sigma evidence that theta13 is not null. In this thesis we present the work done on the evaluation of the systematic error on the pi0 background reconstruction efficiency. The pi0 background is one of the main background sources affecting the nu_e appearance search through the detection of nu_e charged current quasi-elastic events at SK. Two different and complementary approaches have been developed. First, we have started developing a new device that partially reproduces the topology of physics events. Second, we have created a specific sample to estimate the systematic uncertainty of pi0 events reconstruction efficiency. This result was used in the official 2011 nu_e search. Furthermore, results from this sample will be used in future extended oscillation analysis. We also present the first study of the leptonic CP violation phase (deltaCP) using T2K nu_e data, assuming the recently measured value of theta13 by reactor experiments

Texto completoIn this thesis I report the results of performance studies conducted on the pattern recognition algorithm dedicated to the Scintillating Fibre Tracker to be installed in the LHCb detector during its upgrade. The performance increases both in terms of reconstruction efficiencies and in processing time when working with additional scintillating fibre layers. The alternative tracking strategies tested allow for an improvement on the timing end at the cost of the reconstruction efficiencies. Texto completoIn questa tesi e' presentato lo sviluppo e l'ottimizzazione di un algoritmo per la determinazione del sapore di produzione di mesoni neutri B^0 e B_s^0 , che sfrutta muoni ed elettroni prodotti nel decadimento semileptonico dell'altro adrone-b prodotto nel processo pp -> bbX a LHC. La carica dei leptoni e' utilizzata per identificare il sapore del mesone-b neutro. Tre campioni di eventi simulati contenenti i decadimenti B_s^0 -> J/psi phi, B^+ -> J/psi K^+ e B^0 -> J/psi K^+ sono sfruttati per lo sviluppo e il controllo delle prestazioni dell'algoritmo. Due reti neurali sono definite separatamente per muoni ed elettroni ed utilizzate per parametrizzare la probabilita' di errata attribuzione del sapore omega dell'algoritmo, utilizzando rispettivamente 24 000 e 20 400 eventi simulati contenenti decadimenti B_s^0 -> J/psi phi. Le prestazioni dell'algoritmo sono inoltre misurate e calibrate su un campione di eventi B^+ -> J/psi K^+ raccolti dall'esperimento CMS nel corso del 2012, pari a 20 fb^-1 . La carica del kaone determina univocamente il sapore del B+ al momento della produzione e consente la misura diretta della probabilita' di errata attribuzione del sapore. Il potere di identificazione dell'algoritmo P_tag = epsilon_tag (1 - 2 omega )^2 , e' misurato essere pari a 0.833 +/- 0.024 (stat.) +/- 0.012 (syst.) % per i muoni e 0.483 +/- 0.020 (stat.) +/- 0.003 (syst.) % per gli elettroni. Il potere di identificazione risultante dalla combinazione dei due algoritmi e' 1.307 +/- 0.031 (stat.) +/- 0.007 (syst.) %. L'algoritmo combinato di identificazione del sapore e' utilizzato nella misura dei parametri phi_s e DeltaGamma_s di violazione della simmetria CP, sensibili a potenziali processi di nuova fisica non inclusi nella descrizione del modello standard. Utilizzando il campione di dati raccolti dall'esperimento CMS nel corso del 2012, e' eseguita una analisi angolare dipendente dal tempo dello stato finale mu^+ mu^- K^+ K^- del decadimento B_s^0 -> J/psi phi, includendo nell'analisi l'algoritmo di identificazione del sapore. Un totale di 49 000 decadimenti ricostruiti del mesone B_s^0 sono utilizzati per estrarre il valore sperimentale della fase debole phi_s e la differenza di vita media DeltaGamma_s : phi_s = -0.075 +/- 0.097 (stat.) +/- 0.031 (syst.) rad DeltaGamma_s = 0.095 +/- 0.013 (stat.) +/- 0.007 (syst.) ps^-1
