Resumen
The paper presents results of research carried out on two La Tène culture settlements situated in the vicinity of present-day Wrocław. The sites of Wrocław-Partynice 6 and Ślęza 11–12 revealed relics of La Tène culture buildings including semi-sunken houses, storage pits, and post-built structures, which are typical of La Tène culture villages distinguished by highly dispersed housing. The research yielded a considerable series of pottery and a small number of small finds made of clay, metal, and glass. Based on abundant analogies, the ceramic material, which included both wheel- and hand-made vessels, can be dated to the close of the Early La Tène period and the beginnings of the Middle La Tène period. The analysis of animal bones retrieved from archaeological features revealed that cattle was the predominant species in animal husbandry practiced by the people from both sites.

Resumen
The article presents the latest state of research on the issues of La Tène culture settlement in the area of modern-day Silesia. The text discusses the specific of field research and their interpretation in the light of all the discoveries that are known from the analysed region. Until recently, studies on the La Tène culture in Poland were considerably hampered by a particular state of research. The vast majority of finds which can be dated to the Early La Tène period have sepulchral nature, while the settlement sites represented the Middle La Tène period. The author also discusses the model of periodization used for the territory of Central Europe, the settlement potential of the local populations, their interregional connections and contacts with indigenous societies.

Resumen
The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of current knowledge concerning the late La Tène chronology in Bohemia and Moravia during the LT C2–D2 phases (150–0 BC) with an emphasis on developments in the latter stages of the La Tène occupation of the Middle Danube zone (LT D1b – LT D2). During the first century BC, specifically from the 70s and 60s BC onwards, a succession of events caused a rapid chain of reactions that resulted in the abandonment of the oppida and the replacement of the La Tène population in Bohemia by incomers of Germanic origin on the one hand, and a final rapid rise of the La Tène elites in the Middle Danube zone on the other. These processes are accompanied by a distinctive material culture of both local and external origin (Mediterranean and Germanic) and these objects tell us much about the society and its socio-economic strategies, distribution patterns and long-distance communication. The article does not aim to provide an historical account of the events that took place around the second half of the first century BC, such as Ceasar’s military campaigns against the Helvetians and in Gaul, the supposed participation of the Boii in these events, and the demise of the Celtic occupation of the Bratislava oppidum as a result of the (supposed) devastating incursion by the Dacians under the leadership of Burebista. The objective is to summarise what is known about the chronology of this turbulent period of the first century BC and to offer an archaeological overview of the developments of material culture in the Middle Danube zone. Key Words: Late La Tène, chronology, material analysis, metals, glass, oppida, Central Europe

Resumen
Sources of knowledge of treatment practices in the La Tène period in Central Europe are limited. Archaeologists very often classify findings on the basis of their personal opinions which are not substantiated by evidence. The theories that have been proposed so far are not widely accepted by the academics. Artefacts that are expected to be used for diagnostics and treatment are not usually chosen to deduce the form and processes of therapeutic practice in the La Tène period. The main issue of the topic is the possibility to distinguish between tools for therapeutic procedures and artefacts created for other purposes. However, there is also the question of whether it is possible to distinguish between tools originating from Central Europe and tools originating in the Roman or Greek environment, artefacts which originated in the studied period from medieval or modern objects, and the real artefacts, for which there are no suitable analogies, from counterfeits created in the 18th‒19th centuries. For this purpose, specific debatable sets of artefacts are used. The goal of the research is to clarify the real purpose of the examined artefacts, for which it was previously proposed that they were used for therapy or diagnostics in the La Tène period. The results of the review and analysis of the artefacts have their explanatory ability about the state of practice in the studied geographical area.

Resumen
The first part of our research focuses on the analysis of animal remains (>6000 identified specimens, NISP) from the Middle La Tène central settlement Haselbach in Lower Austria, one of the largest investigated archaeozoological assemblages of present-day Austria. Based on the age and sex profiles, the faunal assemblage from Haselbach shows characteristics of urbanization and centralization and bears striking similarities to the archaeozoological material of the central settlement of Roseldorf (Lower Austria), some 35 km northwest of Haselbach. The second part of our research discusses the historical and regional context of the archaeozoological results from Haselbach and compares them with other sites, based on a detailed review of published archaeozoological data from the La Tène period (c. 450 BC to the end of the first century BC). In total, 55 faunal assemblages from 46 sites in nine countries in Central Europe, representing different types of sites (lowland settlements, hilltop settlements, central settlements, oppida, assemblages of ritual activity, and mining sites) were examined. The synthesis of the archaeozoological data exhibits different husbandry strategies and suggests major changes, especially during the Middle La Tène period indicating agricultural intensification. The differences in the biological profiles of the major domesticated species are of crucial importance to better understand aspects of socio-economic organization; especially in the case of cattle, age and sex profiles are used to distinguish different patterns of cattle husbandry. Finally, morphometric and recent genetic analyses on cattle bones and teeth from La Tène sites in Central Europe provide new insights into the complex socio-economic behavior as well as long-distance networks, involving animal supply and mobility in an exciting period of change involving centralization and increasing influence from the South during the pre-Roman late Iron Age.

Resumen
The archaeological site of Ribnica near Brežice has been known to the general public since the mid-1950s as the location of the Roman roadside station Romula. Between 2001 and 2004, extensive archaeological excavations took place on the site because of the planned construction of the Ljubljana – Obrežje highway; among other things, it proved that this location was attractive not only to the Romans, but also to settlers in prehistory, the Middle Ages, and modern times. The earliest archaeological remains at Ribnica date to the Eneolithic period, followed by the Bronze Age settlement and a few pits from the La Tène period. Among the prehistoric finds, those from the Bronze Age are the most numerous, while those from the Eneolithic and the La Tène period appear only sporadically. Although two decades have passed since the excavations at Ribnica, the research results have not been published yet. In this paper, we provide an overview of the prehistoric remains discovered in Ribnica near Brežice.

Resumen
Imported artefacts from the Late La Tène period also include mosaic glass vessels produced using millefiori, reticella and ribbon mosaic glass techniques. The artefacts are part of the assemblages from the oppida of Stradonice and Staré Hradisko and from the Jičina-Požaha hillfort of the Púchov culture. Their origin can be traced to a Hellenistic workshop(s) in the eastern Mediterranean that was probably in operation in the second and first centuries BC. According to their chemical composition determined by means of SEM-EDS, NAA and LA-ICP-MS, the chemical type of glass of the mosaic vessels is the same as the glass used to make La Tène ring ornaments – soda-lime natron glass.

Resumen
The basis of this research is the compilation of a gazetteer of sites and finds of the La Tène and early Gallo-Roman periods (c. 475 BC - c. 31 BC) in north-west France. Two aspects of the evidence thus collected are examined in detail: settlement and coinage. For the early La Tène period, burial evidence provides the only significant source of information, and at present it is not of sufficient quality or quantity to do more than shed light on a few specific aspects of regional development. Similarly, the settlement evidence from the later periods is also relatively scarce. However the introduction of coinage in the middle La Tène, probably via mercenaries returning from service in the Greek world, provides a much more substantial body of information on developments between the third and first centuries BC. Following a consideration of the theoretical aspects of coin use and function, all the major types of coinage in north-west France are examined in detail, and a number of problems of attribution and interpretation are discussed. It is apparent from the study of settlement and coinage that several traditional interpretations of aspects of the La Tène and early Gallo-Roman periods in north-west France need to be reassessed, in particular questions concerning the development of oppida, and the function of coinage. In the concluding chapter a model of the development of coinage in the region is suggested, illuminated where possible by the application of settlement evidence. The result demonstrates clearly the extraordinarily cohesive nature of this area, which has been termed "greater Armorica", throughout the later Iron Age and into the Gallo-Roman era.

Resumen
This study reviews the evidence for the period spanning from Late Hallstatt to Late La Tène - the 6th to 1st C BC - in the circonscription of Rhône-Alpes, a region of 44 000 km² centred around Grenoble and Lyon. This evidence is presented in a gazetteer of 416 sites, comprising settlements, burials and isolated finds. Since Rhône-Alpes was a contact zone between Massalia and the northern 'barbarian' cultures, the understanding of trade was a research priority. The Rhône corridor was re-assessed in terms of 17 classes of imported artefacts and the indigenous natural and human resources of Central-Eastern France. It is concluded that this well known late Hallstatt trade route continued to develop after its supposed decline in the 5th C BC. It became a rhodanian cultural zone whose form anticipated that of the Provincia Transalpina founded by the Romans in 121 BC. Whealthy fringe settlements show how the boundary of this rhodanian cultural zone gradually moved northwards. Fortified settlements are mainly represented by the stone-built hillforts of the South and West. Generally, their interiors are not yet well documented, but certain characteristic structures - for example granaries and sanctuaries - were noticed. Amongst lowland settlements, a few began in the Middle La Tène as market centres. They then figured prominently in the Italian wine trade and were later still to become roman towns. Burial sites fall into 14 regional burial groups with varied funerary rites. In the rich and idiosyncratic alpine sector there is an opportunity to observe not only external contacts but also the movement of indigenous artefacts from valley to valley. Among general recommendations for further research are the definition of regional pottery groups, the characterisation of the 3rd C BC and the scientific investigation of a middle-Rhône hillfort. A case is made for independent dating evidence and less reliance on historical models.

The weapons from the main collection from La Tène (impact and thrusting weapons, lances, projectiles/throwing spears, shields) have been analysed for use-wear. Due to the anaerobic conditions, the pieces at the Laténium are largely well preserved, with many bearing a simple patina. This PhD thesis combines chronotypology, experimental archaeology, «ethnoarchaeology» and forensics to answer the following question : is it possible by examining the traces visible on the objects from La Tène and other sites to as certain whether the weapons were put beyond use deliberately, as part of a ritual, or did it occur during combat ? The objective is not to deduce the function of the enigmatic site (sanctuary, monument to a military victory,…) but to find ways of interpreting it

The presented study analyses on the example of Bohemia the question in what extent the creation of oppida (and more broadly the cultural transformation of the Transalpine world in the recent La Tène period) were influenced by Mediterranean impulses and to what extent they may be on the other hand considered as a local phenomenon. The historical and chronological background are studied in detail, the question itself is approached by an analysis of the corpus of Mediterranean imports in central Europe intended to evaluate the role of Bohemia (within the central European context) in the contacts with the Mediterranean. In the concluding chapter the oppida and their settlement systems are confronted with the Mediterranean towns. The contacts with the Mediterranean turn out to have been constant and significant for the Transalpine word, the oppida, however, seem to be a largely local phenomenon

During the Antiquity, the space between the Moselle and the Rhine is an area in which many historical events occured. Those events successively changed its administrative and political organization. This dissertation aims to study, through spatial, model, and comparative approaches, the evolution of the settlement of four micro-regions within a vast space between the I. c. BC to the V c. AD. In these frameworks, the shape and dynamics of the habitat, the structuring spaces they generate, and finally, the establishment choices of the settlements are consecutively studied. The results highlight the diversity of habitat types, spatial patterns and dynamics. The countrysides are not uniform and the mechanisms influencing the formation and the trajectory of the different types of perceived patterns are complex. They equally depend from many local factors and from the global historical phenomenon. The variety of cases described in this dissertation enables us to see that the countrysides are following several long evolution processes. The latter do not begin or finish on the borders of the defined historical periods

Intra-site spatial analysis of settlement does not allow use of general model applicable to any archaeological site. However some items have similar habitat settlement profiles. Can we consider looking for protocols transposable to usual settlement sites? The purpose of this study is based on an exploratory approach, on two protohistoric settlements. On the Bandkeramik site of Bucy-le-Long "la Fosselle", the analysis focuses on spatial distribution of the material remains within comparable architectural units. Data analysis is used to determine different study parameters. The informative potential of housing units, established according to morphological and taphonomic criteria, is evaluated and compared with the archaeological potential, determined from the richness of the furniture and the different categories of artifacts. The global intra-site analysis is made by grouping the furniture by functional category, to highlight significant assemblages of vestiges according to the dwellings. They allow to characterize and to segment the significant sets of food and technical activities at the site scale, based on houses partitioning. The site of Changis-sur-Marne "les Pétreaux" having suffered a long occupation from the Late bronze to the Early la Tène period, lead to a difficult reading of the settlements. During excavation spatial analysis is tried on structures groups. Then, the distribution of furniture is studied at various observation scales. However, those first divisions do not reflect groups of obvious rural settlements. A partitioning of the structures within smaller spatial entities is then engaged starting from the search for aggregates, highlighted by the space-time hot spot analysis. The dynamic of occupation of the site is thus more easily perceptible. Two case studies are finally challenged with other spatial studies about settlement sites. In addition to the material remains commonly seen as reference in the intra-site spatial analysis of settlement, archaeological structures find all their places

This archaeozoological study investigates morphological variations in different skeletal parts of the pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) according to two main assumptions: (1) the morphological changes of the animal reflect socio-economic changes; (2) there is a great diversity of pig’s forms, driven by different factors (environment, agropastoral strategies, cultural habits, etc.). Our analysis, based on these assumptions, tends to quantify and describe these changes and this diversification to try to understand their origin and mechanisms. For this we have observed the dental and skeletal remains of more than 600 archaeological sites, located on the Gallic, French and Italian territories, dated from La Tène moyenne to the modern period, using different methods of geometric and traditional morphometrics. In this way, we were able to build a strong osteometric framework for pigs and get new clues to a better understanding of farming practices for Gallic, Roman and medieval periods

Resumen
The article examines the archaeological site of Bizjakova hiša in Kobarid, in the area of Zgornje Posočje (Upper Soča Valley), where a burial with seven preserved horses’ skeletons and several metal finds (weapons, harness, jewellery, etc.) was found in 2010. Most of the finds are similar to the Celtic type. The burial dates back to the period around 300 BC and is part of the LT B2 phase. At the moment it is considered a singular event belonging to a ritual, which finds some confirmation in the sites of worship and in the sanctuaries in the Central European or Alpine area. It is one of the first sites in the Soča Valley where large finds dating back to the ancient La Tène period have been found; moreover, it is also the site with the largest number of horse skeletons dating back to the Iron Age.
