Resumen
Rangelands cover around half of the planet’s land mass and provide vital ecosystem services to over a quarter of humanity. The Himalayan rangelands, part of a global biodiversity hotspot is among the most threatened regions in the world. In rangelands of many developing nations policies banning grazing in protected areas is common practice. In 1998, the Indian state of Sikkim, in the Eastern Himalaya, enacted a grazing ban in response to growing anthropogenic pressure in pastures and forests that was presumably leading to degradation of biodiversity. Studies from the region demonstrate the grazing ban has had some beneficial results in the form of increased carbon stocks and regeneration of some species of conservation value but the ban also resulted in negative outcomes such as reduced household incomes, increase in monocultures in lowlands, decreased manure production in a state that exclusively practices organic farming, spread of gregarious species, and a perceived increase in human wildlife conflict. This paper explores the impact of the traditional pastoral system on high elevation plant species in Lachen valley, one of the few regions of Sikkim where the grazing ban was not implemented. Experimental plots were laid in along an elevation gradient in grazed and ungrazed areas. Ungrazed areas are part of pastures that have been fenced off (preventing grazing) for over a decade and used by the locals for hay formation. I quantified plant species diversity (Species richness, Shannon index, Simpson diversity index, and Pielou evenness index) and ecosystem function (above ground net primary productivity ANPP). The difference method using movable exlosure cages was used in grazing areas to account for plant ANPP eaten and regrowth between grazing periods). The results demonstrate that grazing significantly contributes to greater plant species diversity (Species richness, Shannon index, Simpson diversity index, and Pielou evenness index) and ecosystem function (using above ground net primary productivity as an indicator). The multidimensional scaling and ANOSIM (Analysis of Similarities) pointed to significant differences in plant species assemblages in grazed and ungrazed areas. Further, ecosystem function is controlled by grazing, rainfall and elevation. Thus, the traditional transhumant pastoral system may enhance biodiversity and ecosystem function. I argue that a complete restriction of open grazing meet neither conservation nor socioeconomic goals. Evidence based policies are required to conserve the rich and vulnerable biodiversity of the region.

Resumen
Abstract Dutch impersonal passives are often considered to be only compatible with atelic volitional verbs, such as werken ‘work’, lachen ‘laugh’, and zwemmen ‘swim’. Two recent corpus studies, however, argue that a wider range of verbs is compatible with the construction, presenting examples of attested impersonal passives with telic and non-volitional verbs. This paper lends further support to this view, by providing an exploratory study of the frequencies of different intransitive verbs appearing in the construction, as well as a discussion of the telicity of attested impersonal passives with vallen ‘fall’ and sterven ‘die’. The paper concludes that also with these telic non-volitional verbs, the impersonal passive merely conveys the occurrence of the type of act described by the verb, without specifying whether this occurrence is constituted by a single or multiple events, or whether it involves one or more participants.

Texto completo
Resumen
In recent years, the expression “Sustainable Agriculture” has entered public discourse on social, economic, and ecological issues, especially in the context of analysing the negative effects of certain crop production practices. For example, efficient irrigation is now essential due to the ever-changing political environment in respect to water access. Furthermore, interest in alternative weed control methods has grown with an emphasis on reducing tillage and pesticide use. To achieve a sustainable agro-industry, new systems for crop production must be found. One such system, for irrigated maize on sodic soils in the Lachlan Valley was hypothesized and tested in the research reported here. This system incorporated the use of drip irrigation on permanent beds, with the use of residue retention through zero tillage and the use of legume cover crops over winter. Growth, yield and water use efliciency of maize grown under different irrigation methods were measured in order to provide information towards the formulation of guidelines for best irrigation practice management. The new cropping system was compared to the standard practices of the Lachlan Valley such as flood irrigation and conventional tillage. In an experiment conducted to compare four irrigation methods border check (B) irrigation used 6.3ML of irrigation water; drip (D) irrigation reduced this volume by 52% and furrow (F) and permanent bed (P) irrigation had intermediate water requirements. From 15 DAS, crop LAI and dry matter were lowest in B and highest in D compared with other irrigation methods. Despite the large difi‘erences in crop growth, grain yields were similar in all treatments except B, which was reduced by up to 15%. The water use efficiency of yield ranged from 1.80 (in border check) to 4.05 (in drip) t/Ml due to the large differences in the quantity of water applied to each treatment. During the production of the legume cover crop over winter, dry matter yields were lower than expected from the literature. Poor growth may have been attributable to herbicide residues remaining in the soil from the maize crop. Experiments were conducted to test the tolerance of the clover species Trifolium subterraneum cv. Nungarin, Trifolium balansae cv. Paradana and Trifolium vesiculosum cv. Zulu to the herbicides atrazine and metolachlor, that are commonly used in maize production systems in the district. All three clover species showed low tolerances to the herbicides, with subterranean clover showing the highest tolerance. Substantial retardation of growth occurred in the subterranean clover with atrazine concentrations of less that 1% of the recommended rate (9 g ai/ha). Sustainable production of irrigated maize on sodic soils in the Lachlan Valley of New South Wales will involve the adoption by farmers of Best Irrigation Management Practices (BIMP’s). Such practices identified in the literature or by experimentation in this thesis include the following: i) the application to soil of gypsum and lime; ii) the use of permanent beds for cropping, and preferably with drip irrigation; iii) the production of a winter cover crop; and, iv) the use of zero-tillage where practical. Management of cropping systems will continue to be influenced strongly by economic factors, as growers try to remain viable. Soil erosion, continuous cropping and soil fertility, interactions between crops, and nitrogen cycling and management must be addressed. Farming practices which include reduced tillage, crop rotation, opportunity cropping, legumes and fertilizers can be better utilised by farmers to improve sustainability and subsequently profitability.

The present investigation examines the role of cognitive and non-cognitive values in scientific practices. This analysis is based on a comparison between the models proposed by Hugh Lacey and Larry Laudan to explain the dynamics of scientific activity. We will see that in Laceys model, whose main idea are the strategies of investigation, both kinds of values have legitimate roles in scientific activity. In the reticulated model, proposed by Laudan, the author admits only cognitive values as constitutive of scientific rationality. Based on a comparison between both models, we will try to show that Laceys model seems broader than the reticulated model, in the sense that the reticulated one could be considered as a part of Laceys model.

IN OUR REFLECTIONS WE WANT TO FOCUS MORE ON THE CAHIERS OR NOTEBOOKS OF PAUL VALERY THAN HIS OEUVRES, THAT IS, MORE ON HIS "MANUSCRIPTS" OR ROUGH DRAFTS AS OPPOSED TO THE HACKNEYED "TEXTS". FURTHERMORE, WE INTEND TO RECONSIDER THE QUESTION OF THE SUBJET OF (AS WELL IN) WRINTING, BEGINNING AGAIN AT THAT POINT WHERE A CERTAIN MODERN EPISTEMOLOGY SEEMS TO HAVE LEFT THIS TYPE OF INQUIRY, MORE THAN TWENTY YEARS AGO, PARTICULARLY IN THE THOUGHT OF JACQUES LACAN. HOW DOES THE DECISION TO WRITE (ONESELF) COME TO THE FORE IN THE PSYCHE OF AN INDIVIDUAL ? FROM WHAT SUPPOSITIONS AND ACCORDING TO WHICH DESIGNS ARE THE WORDS INVENTED THAT THE "I" TRANSCRIBES ON THE LEAFLET OF A ROUGH DRAFT ? WHO AND WHAT PART OF HIM OR HERSELF TRACES OUT ON THE MANUSCRIPTS THIS "I" OF "I WRITE" with ALL ITS UNRULINESS AS WELL AS ITS DIRECT RELATIONSHIP TO THE INEVITABLE DISCONTINUITY THAT WRITING FRAGMENTS OF ANY KIND DISPLAY, TO THEIR CONFUSION AND "MIXING", THEIR "BROAD SKETCHES, THEIR DIAMONDS OR MOMENTS. . . " ? BUT ALSO : WHERE AND HOW CAN WE ASSURE OURSELVES OF THE EXISTENCE OF A SUBJECT, ESPECIALLY IN THE LANGUAGE THROUGH WHICH PASSES ITS "DESIRE OF WRITING", WHILE TURNING IT ON ITS HEAD AT THE SAME TIME ? ACCORDING TO WHAT "PALPITATING ABUNDANCE" OR "SPEECH WITHOUT SPEAKER", IN TERMS OF WHAT NON-REFERENTIAL LANGUAGE, DOES AN INDIVIDUAL INSCRIBE HIS OR HER "SUBJECTIVITY OR SUBJECT AS BEING" INTO THE LITERARY ENDEAVOR ? INDEED, IN ACCORDANCE WITH WHAT TRIAL OF LIFE ITSELKF, FROM SUCH A POINT ON, IS IT INSCRIBED ?

The study has the interest to investigate the existing values in science and analyze the possibility of promotion of ethics in the scientific pratices in the contemporaneity. The basis for this analysis is on Hugh Lacey s studies on the search for an epistemological model based on the adequacy of present values in scientific practices to social projection and human needs. This analysis shows that to have a better understanding of science and its objective, we should distinguish the values, the moments and the decisive strategies for the development of science. The Lacey s proposed has two articulations a distinction of values (cognitive and noncognitive) and a distinguish of the proper times of scientific practice that would enable a better explanation and justification of the problem of ―value-free science‖. To Lacey, there are three moments of scientific activity that allow us to analyse the performance of values: the moment M1, to adopt ways and strategies for research; the moment M2, to accept theories; and the moment M3, to apply scientific knowledge. The distinction of values is needed to support the view that scientific knowledge can be impartial and still serve as social values. Already, the distinction of moments of scientific activity allows the author to indicate the suitable place for investigating social influences in the research (at the moments M1 and M3). We realize that the modern tradition of science used a materialist understanding that selected restricted and one-dimensional strategies of research, overly linked to noncongnitive values of control of natural objects that privilege capitalists values, that, almost always, do not guarantee the enjoyment of other values essential for the human welfare. Therefore, this discussion suggests the importance of rethink the present values in science for a scientific activity that balances the ideal of the understanding of the world, together with the ability to generate useful Technologies for the flourishing of humanity.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis examines the present-day and Late Quaternary fluvial geomorphology and hydrology of the upper Lachlan Valley in central western New South Wales. The sediments and morphology of the channel and floodplain are described from its principal alluvial reaches: the confined, single channel reach from Cowra to Gooloogong, the unconfined, single-channel reach between Gooloogong and Cadow, and the anabranching reach on the Condobolin Plain. Present-day channel and floodplain morphology in single-channel reaches of the Lachlan River is dominated by the highly variable hydrologic regime, which is accentuated in confined reaches of the river, but is also influenced by inherited channel forms. In confined reaches, where the effective floodplain is 6,000-3,000 yrs is in good agreement with lake-level and other environmental records within the catchment.

Resumen
The Hawkesbury River is the longest coastal river in New South Wales. A vital source of water and food, it has a long Aboriginal history and was critical for the survival of the early British colony at Sydney. The Hawkesbury’s weathered shores, cliffs and fertile plains have inspired generations of artists. It is surrounded by an unparalleled mosaic of national parks, including the second-oldest national park in Australia, Ku-ring-gai National Park. Although it lies only 35 km north of Sydney, to many today the Hawkesbury is a ‘hidden river’ – its historical and natural significance not understood or appreciated. Until now, the Hawkesbury has lacked an up-to-date and comprehensive book describing how and when the river formed, how it functions ecologically, how it has influenced humans and their patterns of settlement and, in turn, how it has been affected by those settlements and their people. The Hawkesbury River: A Social and Natural History fills this gap. With chapters on the geography, geology, hydrology and ecology of the river through to discussion of its use by Aboriginal and European people and its role in transport, defence and culture, this highly readable and richly illustrated book paints a picture of a landscape worthy of protection and conservation. It will be of value to those who live, visit or work in the region, those interested in Australian environmental history, and professionals in biology, natural resource management and education.

Parents and teachers today face a swirl of conflicting theories about child rearing and educational practice. Indeed, current guides are contradictory, oversimplified, and at odds with current scientific knowledge. Now, in Awakening Children's Minds, Laura Berk cuts through the confusion of competing theories, offering a new way of thinking about the roles of parents and teachers and how they can make a difference in children's lives. This is the first book to bring to a general audience, in lucid prose richly laced with examples, truly state-of-the-art thinking about child rearing and early education. Berk's central message is that parents and teachers contribute profoundly to the development of competent, caring, well-adjusted children. In particular, she argues that adult-child communication in shared activities is the wellspring of psychological development. These dialogues enhance language skills, reasoning ability, problem-solving strategies, the capacity to bring action under the control of thought, and the child's cultural and moral values. Berk explains how children weave the voices of more expert cultural members into dialogues with themselves. When puzzling, difficult, or stressful circumstances arise, children call on this private speech to guide and control their thinking and behavior. In addition to providing clear roles for parents and teachers, Berk also offers concrete suggestions for creating and evaluating quality educational environments--at home, in child care, in preschool, and in primary school--and addresses the unique challenges of helping children with special needs. Parents, Berk writes, need a consistent way of thinking about their role in children's lives, one that can guide them in making effective child-rearing decisions. Awakening Children's Minds gives us the basic guidance we need to raise caring, thoughtful, intelligent children.

Resumen
AbstractIn the 1970s, the number of accessions held in national and international seed and gene banks increased steadily. This growth, initially a source of pride, was recognised as a liability by the 1980s. Too many accessions lacked the basic information necessary for researchers to access and use samples knowledgably. Many gene banks came under scrutiny for poor management practices and several found themselves accused of mishandling a ‘global patrimony’ entrusted to their care. In this paper, I explore one response to these concerns that attracted attention from many in the germplasm conservation community: creating linked, standardised databases of collections. Calls for more and better data about accessions often emphasised that these data would make collections easier to use and therefore more valued. Here I take a close look at the early history of data collation and standardisation as a means of ‘rationalising’ collections, a motivation that was not advertised as prominently. This historical example shows the infrastructures developed to facilitate data exchange in the context of seed and gene banking to have been tied up with both mundane imperatives to cut costs and lofty goals of building political bridges—in addition to the often-repeated ambition of making plant breeding more efficient.

Resumen
Abstract In 1412 the Inca Pachacutec, accompanied by his son the imperial prince Yupanqui and his brother Capac-Yupanqui, undertook the Conquest of the Valley of lea, whose inhabitants, though peace loving by nature, lacked neither the resources nor the army to wage war. That was the wise monarch’s understanding, and before resorting to arms he proposed to the Iquefios that they submit to his paternal government. The latter willingly agreed, and the Inca and his 40,000 warriors were cordially and splendidly received by the ICans.

Resumen
Abstract The USSR’s brutal religious repression, followed by a marginal opening of associational space that allowed Islamist ideologies from the Middle East and South Asia to spread to the Uzbek republic, led to underground religious entrepreneurship. Mostly hujra students, these entrepreneurs created an Islamist opposition movement at the end of perestroika. Chapter 8 explores the content, trajectory, and limited success of Adolat and the Islamic Revival Party of Uzbekistan—organizations comprising the first wave of Uzbek Islamism. These groups’ young leaders—most notably Adolat’s Tohir Yo’ldosh—lacked deep sacred authority, although they did construct some Islamic authority through their association with the revivalist imam Shaykh Abduvali Qori. The Uzbek first wave also lacked networks beyond the Ferghana Valley. Adolat’s puritanism and antisystemic, albeit nonviolent, challenge to President Karimov alienated many and ended in the regime’s destruction of the movement. The chapter ends with a survey of Karimov’s anti-Islamic politics, which bred an emergent second Islamist wave, beginning in the mid- to late 1990s with the nonviolent pro-caliphate party, Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami.

Resumen
This chapter focuses on the decline of the Glasgow Law School during the period 1801–1830. When John Millar died in 1801, he was succeeded by Robert Davidson, who lacked his predecessor's broad, philosophical approach. While, with Millar, the masters at the University of Glasgow had been keen to use the patronage system to gain an active and successful professor who would attract students and promote the values of Enlightened education, Davidson was appointed because he was the principal's son. He failed to maintain viable classes in Civil Law, and appears to have ceased to teach it after 1819. He did have students for Scots law, seemingly in reasonable numbers. The chapter considers how legal education in Glasgow changed, away from the values of Adam Smith and Millar, and towards a supposedly ‘practical’ rather than theoretical focus, during Davidson's tenure.

Resumen
This chapter provides the rationale of the first of three tools suggested in this book to assess value and satisfaction of e-learning systems in order to provide an assessment of the effectiveness of such systems. The other two tools are presented in the following chapter. The first tool proposed by the conceptual model is the Value-Satisfaction grid which aggregates the learners’ value and satisfaction with e-learning systems in order to indicate the learners’ perceived effectiveness of e-learning systems. The Value-Satisfaction grid also helps indicate the action and improvement priorities that are needed for the characteristics and dimensions of an e-learning system under study. A proposed method of aggregation of learners’ perceived value of e-learning systems and satisfaction with e-learning systems to construct the Value-Satisfaction grid and the two tools presented in the following chapter is also presented in this chapter. The understanding of the Value-Satisfaction grid provides the first building block toward a complete set of assessment tools of learners’ perceived effectiveness of e-learning systems. The development of this set of tools is a significant achievement as scholars have suggested that prior research in technology mediated learning (TML) lacked the overall system approach and concentrated only on one or two dimensions at a time (Alavi & Leidner, 2001a, p. 9).

Resumen
Historical explanation and the understanding of international relations can be enhanced by applying detailed psychological, neural, and social mechanisms to real-world events. By applying the method of social cognitive-emotional workups to the origins of World War I, this chapter shows the relevance of an integrated account of beliefs, concepts, values, rules, analogies, metaphors, emotions, inferences, and communication. The result transcends the limitations of purely narrative explanations in history and provides insight into why the field of international relations has lacked a satisfactory general theory. Explaining social changes in both groups and individuals requires understanding the communicative interactions of cognitive-emotional minds; the result is mechanistic-narrative explanation. Dealing with complex historical developments such as the outbreak of wars requires solution of the person–group problem.

Resumen
The degree to which people experience threats to their survival shapes their basic values. Throughout history, most people lived just above the starvation level, but in the years after World War II, unprecedented prosperity and social welfare safety nets launched an intergenerational shift from survival to self-expression values. When the first postwar birth cohort reached adulthood in the 1960s, student protests erupted, inaugurating pervasive cultural changes. Historically, a coherent set of pro-fertility norms evolved that limits women to producing as many children as possible and that stigmatizes any other form of sexual behavior not linked with reproduction. Because pro-fertility norms require people to repress strong drives, there is a built-in tension between them and their polar opposite, individual-choice norms. Throughout history, societies that lacked pro-fertility norms tended to die out, but in recent decades, a growing number of societies have attained high existential security, long life expectancy, and low infant mortality, opening the way for a shift from pro-fertility norms to individual-choice norms.

Resumen
Abstract With RTGS having become the dominant settlement model for large-value payment systems around the world, the focus of attention has naturally shifted away from credit risk, to liquidity risk. A long-established finding in the monetary economics literature is that the presence of a ‘cash-in-advance’ constraint can inhibit trade (Svensson, 1985; Lucas and Stokey, 1987). However, it is only recently, with the widespread adoption of RTGS, that this fundamental insight has been applied to the analysis of payment-system design. A number of studies – including those by Freeman (1996a, 1996b), cited in Chapter 2, but also Green (1997), Lacker (1997) and Kahn and Roberds (2001a) – have adapted neoclassical monetary models to settings more closely resembling those seen in modern payment systems.

Resumen
The investigations carried out by the Pachacamac Valley Archaeological Program and Field-School made clear that the current appearance of monumental Pachacamac, with a planned layout that has three walls and two long straight streets that run through the central part of the sanctuary is due, exclusively, to the feverish activity of the Inca administration. Apparently, Inca Pachacamac lacked the characteristics of a city with dense and extensive permanent residential occupation, and its layout was determined by the ceremonial function of the site's architecture. The last 11 excavation campaigns conducted at Pachacamac indicate that there have been no continuities, either in the architectural design or in the layout, throughout the five successive periods of human occupation that occurred at the site: the Middle Lima, the Late Lima (Maranga), the Initial Ychsma-Wari, the Middle Ychsma, and the Inca. Furthermore, each of the periods is characterized by different types of architecture and a particular distribution of the built space, compared to the others. From this, it can be inferred that it is the Inca administration that undertook the task of building a great ceremonial center with spaces destined to temporarily house the pilgrims, communication axes, and temples of imperial worship.

Resumen
Between Brazil and Portugal, bobbin lace is a practice that constitutes a cultural value without borders. But there is a serious risk of discontinuity of this tradition, due to the low demand for these lace associated with the decrease in the number of lacemakers, the lack of adaptation of contemporary computerized techniques, and to lack of interest of the younger generations. In the process of creating and making bobbin lace, it is possible to identify a particular problem that design can collaborate with. As a crucial component, the importance of the “piques” design for the process of making original laces is highlighted. There are few lacemakers who are specialized in the task of creating new “pique”. This research proposes the creation of a software that facilitates the recording of memory and the creation of new designs for bobbin lace. A bibliographical research was carried out in order to analyze possible existing similar solutions. For the proposition of the new software based on the resolution of a real problem and on the user's needs, it was decided to approach the interaction design methodologies

Seven inbred maize lines from the active collection of Laboratory of plant genetic resources were tested for their susceptibility to fungal pathogens using visual evaluation of disease symptoms and molecular diagnostics. The highest infection rate was registered in MAN2492 and was 35%, therefore the respective genotype can be classified as susceptible. MAN2466 lacked symptoms of diseases and for MAN2488 minimum value of the respective parameter was registered (5%) – resistant genotype group. Quantitative analysis showed that the overall value of DNA sequences specific for the fungal genome was the lowest in the grain of MAN2488, MAN2491, MAN2470 genotypes.

Resumen
A new type of chromogenic substraces based on derivatives of phenoxazine is presented. Particularly interesting is the blue dye 7-amino-3-diethylamino-8-methylphenoxazine (ADMP) with a molar extinktion coefficient of about 80,000 at 624 nm. Peptides were linked to the aminogroup of the dye and red coloured substrates were obtained with a λmax value of about 540 nm. On account of the distinct difference of the λmax values and the negligable influence of the absorption peaks of the acylated and the free dye this chromophore is suitable for the synchesis of substrates. Besides the spectral properties of chese new chromogenic peptides we determined their characce-riscics using serine proteases involved in the process of coagu-lacion and fibrinolysis. In comparison co para-nitroaniline substrates the introduction of the relatively bulky ADMP into the peptide sequence led to products with superior properties in respect of sensitivity and specificity. It was found that the ADMP substrates are particularly favourable for the determination of thrombin, urokinase and activated protein C in the presence of other proteases.

Resumen
In the recently proposed LACE framework for collective entity resolution, logical rules and constraints are used to identify pairs of entity references (e.g. author or paper ids) that denote the same entity. This identification is global: all occurrences of those entity references (possibly across multiple database tuples) are deemed equal and can be merged. By contrast, a local form of merge is often more natural when identifying pairs of data values, e.g. some occurrences of 'J. Smith' may be equated with 'Joe Smith', while others should merge with 'Jane Smith'. This motivates us to extend LACE with local merges of values and explore the computational properties of the resulting formalism.

Historical data has shown that in times of volatility, many business models have lacked the flexibility of an agility mindset which may be described as a myopia in thinking and decision making. This research examines factors of agility in management by examining Apple Inc. as a case study and comparing it against the five domains of digital transformation. This is an ongoing study that looks at concepts such as leveraging digital technologies to create customer networks, innovation through collaborative technologies, shifting from traditional perceptions of competitors to partners, big data and value proposition. The purpose of this study is to help internal and external stakeholders to better identify high-potential success factors which will contribute to stronger corporate sustainability and, consequently, better longevity.

Michalak, Julia, Josh Lawler, John Gross y Caitlin Littlefield. A strategic analysis of climate vulnerability of national park resources and values. National Park Service, septiembre de 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/nrr-2287214.

Texto completo
Resumen
The U.S. national parks have experienced significant climate-change impacts and rapid, on-going changes are expected to continue. Despite the significant climate-change vulnerabilities facing parks, relatively few parks have conducted comprehensive climate-change vulnerability assessments, defined as assessments that synthesize vulnerability information from a wide range of sources, identify key climate-change impacts, and prioritize vulnerable park resources (Michalak et al. In review). In recognition that funding and planning capacity is limited, this project was initiated to identify geographies, parks, and issues that are high priorities for conducting climate-change vulnerability assessments (CCVA) and strategies to efficiently address the need for CCVAs across all U.S. National Park Service (NPS) park units (hereafter “parks”) and all resources. To help identify priority geographies and issues, we quantitatively assessed the relative magnitude of vulnerability factors potentially affecting park resources and values. We identified multiple vulnerability factors (e.g., temperature change, wildfire potential, number of at-risk species, etc.) and sought existing datasets that could be developed into indicators of these factors. To be included in the study, datasets had to be spatially explicit or already summarized for individual parks and provide consistent data for at least all parks within the contiguous U.S. (CONUS). The need for consistent data across such a large geographic extent limited the number of datasets that could be included, excluded some important drivers of climate-change vulnerability, and prevented adequate evaluation of some geographies. The lack of adequately-scaled data for many key vulnerability factors, such as freshwater flooding risks and increased storm activity, highlights the need for both data development and more detailed vulnerability assessments at local to regional scales where data for these factors may be available. In addition, most of the available data at this scale were related to climate-change exposures, with relatively little data available for factors associated with climate-change sensitivity or adaptive capacity. In particular, we lacked consistent data on the distribution or abundance of cultural resources or accessible data on infrastructure across all parks. We identified resource types, geographies, and critical vulnerability factors that lacked data for NPS’ consideration in addressing data gaps. Forty-seven indicators met our criteria, and these were combined into 21 climate-change vulnerability factors. Twenty-seven indicators representing 12 vulnerability factors addressed climate-change exposure (i.e., projected changes in climate conditions and impacts). A smaller number of indictors measured sensitivity (12 indicators representing 5 vulnerability factors). The sensitivity indicators often measured park or landscape characteristics which may make resources more or less responsive to climate changes (e.g., current air quality) as opposed to directly representing the sensitivity of specific resources within the park (e.g., a particular rare species or type of historical structure). Finally, 6 indicators representing 4 vulnerability factors measured external adaptive capacity for living resources (i.e., characteristics of the park and/or surrounding landscape which may facilitate or impede species adaptation to climate changes). We identified indicators relevant to three resource groups: terrestrial living, aquatic living (including living cultural resources such as culturally significant landscapes, plant, or animal species) and non-living resources (including infrastructure and non-living cultural resources such as historic buildings or archeological sites). We created separate indicator lists for each of these resource groups and analyzed them separately. To identify priority geographies within CONUS,...

Resumen
The Browns Hole quadrangle is in Weber and Cache Counties of northern Utah and covers the eastern part of Ogden Valley, a rapidly developing area of the Wasatch Range. The Middle and South Forks of the Ogden River bisect the quadrangle and are important watersheds and recreational areas to the communities of Ogden Valley and the Wasatch Front. The towns of Huntsville and Eden are just west of the quadrangle, unincorporated communities with year-round residents are present throughout the quadrangle, and numerous summer-cabin communities are present in the eastern part of the quadrangle. A portion of Powder Mountain ski resort, which draws year-round visitation and recreation, is present in the northwest corner of the quadrangle. The quadrangle contains the Willard thrust, a major thrust fault with approximately 30 mi (50 km) of eastward displacement that was active during the Cretaceous-Eocene Sevier orogeny (Yonkee and others, 2019). In the quadrangle, the Willard thrust places Neoproterozoic through Ordovician strata in the hanging wall over a fault-bounded lozenge of Cambrian strata and footwall Jurassic and Triassic strata (see cross section on Plate 2). Neoproterozoic strata comprise a succession of mostly clastic rocks deposited during rifting of western North America and breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia (Yonkee and others, 2014). These rocks include the Cryogenian-age Perry Canyon and Maple Canyon Formations, and the Ediacaran-age Kelley Canyon Formation, Papoose Creek Formation, Caddy Canyon Quartzite, Inkom Formation, Mutual Formation, and Browns Hole Formation. The Browns Hole Formation is a sequence of interbedded volcaniclastic rock and basalt lava flows that provides the only radiometric age control in the quadrangle. Provow and others (2021) reported a ~610 Ma detrital apatite U-Pb age from volcaniclastic sandstone at the base of the formation, Crittenden and Wallace (1973) reported a 580 ± 14 Ma K-Ar hornblende age for a volcanic clast, and Verdel (2009) reported a 609 ± 25 Ma U-Pb apatite age for a basalt flow near the top of the formation. Cambrian strata in the hanging wall include a thick basal clastic sequence (Geertsen Canyon Quartzite) overlain by a thick sequence of interbedded limestone, shale, and dolomite (Langston, Ute, and Blacksmith Formations). Hanging wall rocks are deformed by Willard thrust-related structures, including the Browns Hole anticline, Maple Canyon thrust, and numerous smaller folds and minor faults. Footwall rocks of the Willard thrust include highly deformed Cambrian strata within a fault-bounded lozenge exposed in the southern part of the quadrangle, and Jurassic and Triassic rocks exposed just south of the quadrangle. The Paleocene-Eocene Wasatch Formation unconformably overlies older rocks and was deposited over considerable paleotopography developed during late stages of the Sevier orogeny. The southwest part of the quadrangle is cut by a southwest-dipping normal fault system that bounds the east side of Ogden Valley. This fault is interpreted to have experienced an early phase of slip during local late Eocene to Oligocene collapse of the Sevier belt and deposition of volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks (Norwood Tuff) exposed west of the quadrangle (Sorensen and Crittenden, 1979), and a younger phase of slip during Neogene Basin and Range extension (Zoback, 1983). Lacustrine deposits and shorelines of Pleistocene-age Lake Bonneville are present in the southwest corner of the quadrangle near the mouth of the South Fork of the Ogden River and record the highstand of Lake Bonneville (Oviatt, 2015). Pleistocene glacial deposits, present in the northwest corner of the map, are likely related to the Pinedale glaciation, commonly expressed by two moraine building episodes in the Wasatch Range (Quirk and others, 2020). Numerous incised alluvial deposits and geomorphic surfaces are present along major drainages and record pre- and post-Lake Bonneville aggradational and degradational alluvial and colluvial sequences. Mass-movement deposits, including historically active landslides, are present throughout the quadrangle. Crittenden (1972) mapped the Browns Hole quadrangle at 1:24,000 scale, which provided an excellent foundation for the general stratigraphy and structure, but the 1972 map lacked important details of unconsolidated surficial units. As part of 1:62,500 scale mapping of the Ogden 30'x60' quadrangle, Coogan and King (2016) updated stratigraphic nomenclature, revised some contacts, and added more details for surficial units. For this map, we utilized new techniques for data acquisition and analysis to delineate surficial deposits, bedrock contacts, and faults more accurately and precisely. Mapping and field data collection were largely done in 2021–2022 using a combination of GPS-enabled tablets equipped with georectified aerial imagery (U.S. Department of Agriculture [USDA] National Agriculture Imagery Program [NAIP], 2009), orthoimagery (Utah Geospatial Resource Center [UGRC] State Geographic Information Database, 2018b, 2018c; 2021a, 2021b), and lidar data (UGRC State Geographic Information Database, 2006; 2011; 2013–2014; 2018a), previously published geologic maps, topographic maps, and applications for digital attitude collection. We also used hand-held GPS units, Brunton compasses, and field notebooks to collect geologic data. Field data were transferred to a Geographic Information System (GIS), where the map was compiled and completed.

Resumen
When considering countries of phenomenal economic development and growth, Korea is among the top tiers. While there are other economies with similar economic growth, including those of Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, the economic growth of Korea is exceptional considering that the country lacked basic economic foundation in the past. R. Lucas Jr. (1993), a Nobel Laureate in economics and also a renowned scholar of the respective field, praised the country's economic success, by stating that "I do not think it is in any way an exaggeration to refer to this continuing transformation of Korean society as a miracle". As an evidence for his argument, he asserted "Never before have the lives of so many people undergone so rapid an improvement over so long a period, nor is there any sign that this progress is near its end". Yet, the history of Korea is more than just its outcome; it is the history of continuous national ordeal, a series of challenges and crisis that required people to toil night and day to overcome the situation. If it were not for today's splendid economic success, it would have been more appropriate to describe the history of Korea as that of wretchedness and misery. The fact that South Korea became one of the leading nations in the world is nothing less than a miracle, considering that it underwent many hardships after its independence such as fratricidal Korean War, a long period of dictatorship, 4.19 revolution as a reactionary to the dictatorship, 5.16 military coup, the engagement in the Vietnam War, two oil crises, another military coup afterwards, civil revolutions, a foreign exchange crisis, and the global economic crisis. Economic growth means value-added increase in a certain period of time. To boost this value-added increase, the elements of production such as labor, capital, and land must be both accumulated and invested. Furthermore, it requires the effective use of these elements by combining them when necessary, so that the best value can be drawn out. In other words, the vital factor in economic growth is raising productivity. Then, given similar situations, how come some countries show different performance in factor accumulation or productivity improvement? The accumulation of resources and increase of productivity depend on economic incentive. Proper institution in an economy that provides incentives for economic agents enables factors to flow and to be accumulated where productivity is high. It also gives motivation for innovation and improvement of productivity. Competition in product markets and acquisition of resources and raw materials with low cost through an open-door policy can induce the accumulation of elements and improvement of technology, where in a broader perspective, open-door policy can also be considered as a part of institution. The growth of the Korean economy is unique since only a few economies could demonstrate compatibly high growth rates for a long period. However, at the same time, Korea's case is never unique as its success story is based on factor accumulation, productivity enhancement and, most of all, a fundamental called institution. Its growth was possible due to the fact that there was a proper functioning of market backed by the establishment of proper institutions. The Korean government indeed worked favorably towards the establishment of institution and running of economy in a market-friendly manner. Some features of its growth pattern are worthwhile to be illustrated as there are still a large number of developing countries and high income countries with unstable institutions worldwide, which could gain from a part of Korea's story, at least, and collect substantial knowledge for their future growth.

Resumen
Objectives. Patient safety practices (PSPs) focused on sepsis prediction and recognition, encompass interventions designed to identify patients with sepsis early and improve timely adherence to guidelines. Our objectives were to review the evidence published after the previous Making Healthcare Safer (MHS) report to determine the effectiveness of sepsis prediction and recognition PSPs on patient safety related outcomes. Methods. We searched PubMed and the Cochrane library for systematic reviews and primary studies published from January 2018 through August 2023, supplemented by gray literature searches. We included reviews and primary studies of sepsis prediction and recognition PSPs reporting measures of clinical process (time to diagnosis or treatment, adherence to guidelines, Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock Early Management Bundle), patient outcomes (hospital or intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay, mortality), implementation (use, barriers, and facilitators), or costs. Findings. We focused on 7 systematic reviews and 8 primary studies that were eligible for full review, and briefly summarized 36 pre-post studies that lacked a separate comparison group. All the sepsis prediction and recognition PSPs were multi-component interventions. Across the systematic reviews and primary studies of neonates, the PSPs improved clinical process measures (low strength of evidence), but evidence was insufficient about length of stay or mortality outcomes. Across the systematic reviews and primary studies of adults, the PSPs did not demonstrate an effect on clinical process, length of stay, or mortality outcomes. In primary studies of adults, evidence was insufficient in the prehospital setting for mortality, length of stay, and clinical process measures. In the emergency department setting, strength of evidence was low for mortality and clinical process measures and insufficient for length of stay. In ward or hospitalwide settings, strength of evidence was low across all three outcome types. The secondary outcome of alerting system performance (e.g., positive predictive value) could not be meaningfully compared across studies due to diversity in populations and interventions. Conclusions. This review finds that recent primary studies and systematic reviews do not support that specific PSPs for sepsis prediction and recognition are effective at reducing mortality or length of stay or improve clinical processes in adults in pre-hospital, emergency department, or hospitalwide settings as compared to usual care. Sepsis prediction and recognition PSPs may improve clinical process outcomes in neonates in ICUs.
