In 1556, Claude Roillet, a literature professor at the Collège de Bourgogne and Collège de Boncourt, published a collection of his works as a poet and dramatist under the title Varia Poemata (Paris: Guillaume Julien). This collection notably contained four Latin tragedies, which were titled Philanira, Petrus, Aman, and Catharina. Of these four works, only the first, Philanira would become the subject of a French translation published in 1563 by the Parisian press of Richard Thomas, then republished—again in Paris—by Nicolas Bonfons in 1577. This paper will examine the particulars of this French version in terms of (1) the conversion into the vernacular of the various Latin metrical forms that the author uses and (2) the equivalency of lexical expressions, and even the strategies of imitation, in a French text that demonstrates a tendency to amplify the original Latin composition.

Abstract Context.—The investigation of high-profile fatalities poses special challenges to medical examiners and coroners. Most high-profile cases can be readily recognized early in the course of the investigation. Commonly encountered examples include police-related fatalities or deaths in custody, deaths of celebrities, and mass fatalities or clustered deaths (eg, serial killers). Medical examiner and coroner offices should have policies and procedures in place for adequately handling such cases. A rational approach to these high-profile cases includes activating medical examiner or coroner investigative teams, preplanning before the autopsy, using special autopsy techniques and toxicology procedures, skillful questioning of key witnesses, preparing detailed and comprehensive reports, and planning effective communication with the media. Objective.—The investigation of the sudden and unexpected death of Anna Nicole Smith, an entertainment personality, is presented as an example of how to address the challenging issues inherent in high-profile fatalities and how to adequately prepare for the forensic investigation of high-profile cases. Design.—This article presents a methodical approach to the investigation of high-profile deaths. Results.—A comprehensive, preplanned forensic investigation and autopsy (including use of adjunctive studies) following the death of Anna Nicole Smith resulted in the accurate determination of the cause and manner of her death while adequately convincing the public of the objectivity and reliability of the Medical Examiners Office with respect to its conclusions. Conclusion.—The forensic investigation of death in high-profile cases can be much more tedious and demanding than the investigation of routine cases. It requires more stringent safekeeping of the body and its evidence, more extensive and sophisticated dissection techniques on occasion, and exhaustive toxicologic analysis to exclude low-probability allegations. Procedures for honest, unbiased, and judicious communication with outside agencies and the media must be followed. Failure to follow such procedures might have serious consequences for the medical examiner, the family of the deceased, and the community at large. Adherence to these suggested guidelines may resolve most of the intricate problems involved in the investigation of these types of cases.

This work takes the case of laurent schwartz (1915-2002) to study the collective life of mathematics in the second half of the 20th century. Its goal is to show how collective practices have then been constitutive of mathematical work and community, as well as how they evolved over this period. through a biographical lens, by considering schwartz both as an important actor who has left numerous traces and as a simple witness, we present several tableaus of the collective. we study the encounter between schwartz and the collective life of mathematics during world war ii, in particular through his interaction with the bourbaki group. we then analyze the diffusion of the theory of distributions in mathematics and its historiography, and show schwartz?active role in these processes. a chapter devoted to the kernel theorem (théorème des noyaux) and its later written incarnations allows us to deepen our study of interactions between writing practices in mathematics and various kinds of collectives. Three forms of collective organization of the mathematical work are then investigated: the conference (through a study of the 1947 colloquium on harmonic analysis), the seminar, and, finally, the mathematical research center (taking as an example the centre de mathématiques de l'ecole polytechnique). Finally, we take on the question of schwartz's political engagement as a mathematician. we wish to show how this engagement embodies a certain conception of the mathematical community, while taking some inspiration from its particular social practices

Górska-Szkop, Beata. "Gabinety osobliwości w literaturze drugiej połowy XIX wieku. Obecność i konteksty". Doctoral thesis, 2019. https://depotuw.ceon.pl/handle/item/3364.

Konstrukcja pracy oddaje różne etapy obiegu osobliwości w kulturze i literaturze. W pierwszym rozdziale poddaję interpretacji teksty podróżnicze powiązane z realnie istniejącymi kolekcjami osobliwości. Ich autorami są zarówno pisarze (Józef Ignacy Kraszewski, Sygurd Wiśniowski), jak i uczeni (Karol Darwin, Konstanty Jelski, Benedykt Dybowski) oraz kolekcjonerzy (Michał Tyszkiewicz). Sprawdzam, w jaki sposób badali i opisywali napotkane osobliwości, a zebrane przez nich eksponaty zestawiam z atrakcjami turystycznymi (w rozumieniu Deana MacCannella) i pamiątkami (w rozumieniu Anny Wieczorkiewicz). Sartor Resartus, Niewidzialny, Mistrz Twardowski, Xiądz Faust, ale też realne laboratoria Tesli, Szczepanika i Ochorowicza), prywatnych (m.in. Kuzyn Pons, Pan Major, The Spoils of Poynton) oraz magazynach osobliwości (m.in. Magazyn osobliwości, Lalka, Jaszczur, Złota czara). Interpretacje podporządkowane są trzem podstawowym perspektywom: praktyki, poetyki i polityki (wg Susan Pearce) zbierania, pokazywania i oglądania osobliwości. Zaprezentowane w tekstach eksponaty czytam, wzorem kolekcjonerów, metonimicznie (wg Elaine Freedgood). To jednocześnie opowieści silnie uwikłane w dyskurs klasowy, narodowy i konsumpcyjny.
So far, cabinets of curiosities have been studied mainly by researchers of Renaissance culture and literature, especially art historians dealing with the history of European collecting. This is understandable, because the age of curiosity was the time when the first erudite wunderkammers were created. In my dissertation, I assume that in the nineteenth century, and especially in its second half, the conditions arose for the re-development of this exhibition form, which in turn entailed its transference from an organising principle of aristocratic collections to the contexts of popular culture and literature. The aim of my dissertation is to describe and interpret the various manifestations of cabinets of curiosities in the literature and cultural context of the second half of the 19th century. I understand cabinets of curiosities as collections presenting a microcosm, the design of which is based on the belief that the universe is best represented by those things that are unique, rare, and peculiar. I argue that the interest in curiosities was a consequence of the values which permeated the cultural formations of the nineteenth-century and functioned so as to enable exploration and description of issues which seemingly neither positivism, naturalism nor scientism were capable of reflecting. I assume that "curiosities" is a functional concept, in the sense that it describes the viewer rather than the object. From this point of view I study both how nineteenth-century authors portrayed their epoch using this figure, and the kinds of stories we can reconstruct from examining curiosities. This work is part of the cultural history of literature both in the sense of its thematic scope and the diverse research instruments it deploys. Among the latter are tools used by literary studies, cultural studies, and the history of art. Works that inform the analysis include novels as well as short stories, travel descriptions, philosophical treatises, scientific and popular science texts, tourist guides and newspaper articles. Foreign literature provides the context for the Polish texts studied. 1 The structure of the work reflects various aspects of the circulation of curiosities in culture and literature. In the first chapter, I interpret travel texts related to real-life collections of curiosities. Their authors included writers (Józef Ignacy Kraszewski, Sygurd Wiśniowski), explorers (Karol Darwin, Konstanty Jelski, Benedykt Dybowski), and collectors (Michał Tyszkiewicz). I inquire into how they researched and described the curiosities they encountered, and how the exhibits they collected were related to tourist attractions (Dean MacCannell) and souvenirs (Anna Wieczorkiewicz). In the second and third chapters, I focus on the places presented in the literature (Elżbieta Rybicka) in which the curiosities were studied, exhibited and sold: scientific cabinets (including Sartor Resartus, Niewidzialny, Mistrz Twardowski, and Xiądz Faust, but also real Tesla, Szczepanik and Ochorowicz laboratories), private collections (including Cousin Pons, Pan Major, and The Spoils of Poynton) and magazines of curiosities (including The Old Curiosity Shop, Lalka, The Skin of Sorrow, and The Golden Bowl). I examine the texts from three basic perspectives: the practice, poetics and politics (Susan Pearce) of collecting, and the showing and watching of curiosities. In common with the collectors, I read the exhibits presented in the texts metonymically (Elaine Freedgood). While in the first three chapters I focus primarily on things, the last chapter is about human curiosities, exhibited in the cabinets that belonged to the metropolitan culture of attractions (from the panopticus to the spiritualistic séances). I examine the significances that have been attributed to human bodies in the various discourses in which curiosities were embedded (Anna Wieczorkiewicz). The interpreted texts confirm the widespread presence of curiosity cabinets in 19thcentury literature and culture, and a vivid interest in what is unusual, unknown, or invisible. The curiosities examined enabled and facilitated the introduction of that "uniqueness", characteristic of speculative fiction, to the realm of realism, thereby abolishing the sharp boundary between idealism and materialism, religion and science, fact and miracle; they became a catalyst for modernity. The presented collections tell their own stories about the nineteenth century, using the poetics of curiosities, which operates with specific means of expression, narrative construction, and textual forms. Among the stories from the literary cabinets of curiosities, there are those inspiring universal affinity, evoking melancholy and utopia, and embodying modern norms. At the same time, these stories are enmeshed in class, national and consumer discourses. Although by displaying curiosities, that which is to be considered normal is strongly signalled, normality nevertheless does not here assume an attractive guise. Contact with curiosities allows 2 emancipation from the rigid framework of bourgeois society and participation in culture created by geniuses and eccentrics: travellers, artists, explorers and collectors. In my dissertation, I show that the turn to curiosities takes place in a time marked by the rapid development of science and technology, and new discoveries that shake the existing paradigms and denature the current image of the world. Curiosities help this image to be sewn back together, creating a bridge between the past, modernity and the future.

Resumen
AbstractSituated at the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, the island of Cyprus has always been a bridge as well as a border between the Middle East and Europe. It has also been an important place of both emigration and immigration. The situation in Nicosia, the capital city, is marked by decline following the 1974 conflict and partition. At the same time, however, the city has become an important settling place for international migrants, whose presence has grown during the last 20 years. Today Nicosia’s situation lies between a typical south European city (in which migrants find room in the interstices) and a post-war city. Following the growing effort within migration studies to use the street as a laboratory of diversity and cosmopolitanism (Susan Hall), this paper focuses on a single street. Formerly an important business street, Trikoupi Street is now well known as one of the most cosmopolitan streets in Nicosia, in which south Asians, Arabs, Sub-Saharan Africans as well as Eastern Europeans converge. These different populations correspond to different migratory waves as well as different modes of incorporation into local society. In this chapter, we aim to see how the street level may help us to reflect upon important topics in Cyprus such as contested citizenship, urban change, local/global connections, as well as new forms of cohabitation and patterns of subaltern cosmopolitanism. We also aim to reflect upon the multiple temporalities of the neighborhood, in order to show how the history of the street (and the history of the neighborhood) impacts on current ways of life in Trikoupi. We define the current situation as “suspended cosmopolitanism.”

Resumen
This chapter discusses Newton's collaborative chymical project with Nicolas Fatio de Duillier in 1693. By examining Fatio's hitherto unstudied letter to Newton from the summer of 1693 in conjunction with Newton's manuscript “Three Mysterious Fires”, the chapter shows that the latter text represents the fruit of an elaborate set of procedures devised by Newton in conjunction with Fatio. These processes were related to another set of operations from Newton that Fatio recapitulates in the aforementioned 1693 letter. The procedures that Fatio quotes from Newton provide an important key for understanding both Keynes 58 and the laboratory notebooks. In a word, they are simplified procedures for making such important desiderata as the caduceus of Mercury and the scythe of Saturn, Decknamen that arise in the records of Newton's experimentation and reading notes.

Resumen
The only accolade that American chemist Glen T. Seaborg cared for more than winning the Nobel Prize was having an element named in his honor. In 1994 his colleagues gave him that distinction, elevating the Nobel laureate to the status of helium and hydrogen. Over the next fifteen years, six more elements followed seaborgium onto the periodic table, bringing the total to 112. The last, enshrined in 2009, pays homage to Nicolas Copernicus. Unlike Seaborg, Copernicus never sought such a tribute. Having already scored ample name recognition with the Copernican Revolution, he didn’t really need it. If anything, by the time copernicium was recognized as an element, the periodic table needed him. Copernicium is one of twenty elements containing more protons than the ninety-two naturally found in uranium. All twenty are made artificially in laboratories by colliding preexisting elements such as zinc and lead in a particle accelerator or cyclotron. In some ten billion billion bombardments, two protons will fuse to make one atom of a new super-heavy element. Typically the atom is unstable, lasting perhaps a millisecond before decaying into lighter elements again. All of which makes element fabrication a tricky enterprise, nearly as miraculous as alchemy and considerably more contentious. Who synthesized the first atom of an element, and therefore gets to name it? Seaborg’s UC Berkeley laboratory was the only one in the business through the 1940s and 1950s, netting him ten elements, including plutonium, for which he won the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. By the 1960s, however, there was competition from the Soviets, resulting in the so-called Transfermium Wars. For several decades the periodic table became a political battlefield rather than an intellectual commons. Nothing could have been further from the table’s Enlightenment origins. The product of empirical research and intended to disseminate universal knowledge, a table of presumed elements was first published by the French chemist Antoine Lavoisier in 1789, arranging thirty-three substances, including silver and sulfur and phosphorus, based on observed attributes (such as “Oxydable and Acidifiable simple Metallic Bodies”) rather than according to philosophical precepts.

Resumen
Abstract The parasitic species associated with infections under natural, accidental laboratory, or experimental conditions, with cutaneous larva migrans and their definitive hosts are the following: Biology. The port of entry to the definitive host by infective larvae of hookworms (see Chapter 13) and of Strongyloides (see Chapter 12) is the skin; species of Ancylostoma may also use the oral route (see Chapter 13). In both cases the larvae migrate to the intestine and develop into adults. In nature, the larvae of theseparasitic species may accidentally or purposely invade hosts other than their normal definitive hosts, remaining dormant in the tissues (see Chapter 13). For example, the larvae of A. caninum in abnormal hosts migrate from the skin and distribute throughout the skeletal muscle cells (Lee et al. 1973, 1975; Nichols, 1956), and the larvae of A. tubaeforme of cats invade the salivary glands and nasopharyngeal epithelium (Norris, 1973). In these tissues, the larvae remain in a state of paratenism.

Resumen
Abstract THE YEARS THAT FOLLOWED would bring many more types of lasers, but ruby and helium–neon soon became the mainstays of laser research and applications. The two nicely complemented each other. Maiman’s elegant design made ruby simple and robust; its short, powerful pulses were valuable in research and industry. Bennett, Javan, and Herriott’s helium–neon laser was also a winner, generating a few milliwatts of light in a continuous and highly-coherent beam that was useful in a variety of research situations and alluring for communications. Helium–neon lasers took off rapidly after two other Bell physicists, Alan D. White and J. Dane Rigden, in 1962, made a version that emitted a visible red beam. Red helium–neon lasers became the standard for laboratory demonstrations and were the first type mass-produced for use in supermarket checkout scanners. Both helium–neon and ruby lasers have passed their prime after more than forty years, but remain in use.

Resumen
Abstract One of the most common features about the research careers of Nobel laureates is that many have worked at some point under a former or future Nobel laureate or with someone closely associated with a laureate. Hans Krebs (M53) constructed a genealogy of Nobel laureate biochemists and all, without exception, came from laboratories of Nobel laureates or future Nobel laureates. When John Walker (C97) finished chemistry studies, he became a PhD student of Edward Abraham in Oxford. Abraham had been part of the penicillin team during the Second World War, and a PhD student of Robert Robinson (C47), before he went to work with Boris Chain (M45). When Walker visited the Justus von Liebig Museum in Giessen, Germany, he realized that through Abraham and Robinson he descended from the great German chemists in a scientific genealogy. Walker appreciates how Abraham guided him in reading appropriate literature, like the paper by Jacob (M65) and Monod (M65). Such guidance was crucial as there were no formal requirements or mandatory course work; it was only the opportunity that was provided. Edward M. Purcell (P52) is another good example of a Nobel lineage member. John Van Vleck (P77), who was one of his teachers in graduate school, had been involved in developing microwave radar during the Second World War, heading a group of researchers in which he succeeded Norman Ramsey (P89). The division head to whom Purcell reported was I. I. Rabi (P44). Later, at Harvard, Nicolaas Bloembergen (P81) was one of Purcell’s graduate students.

Resumen
We report results from a multi-scale field experiment conducted in Cyprus in July 2010 in order to investigate the Urban Heat Island (UHI) in Nicosia capital city and its interaction with multi-scale meteorological phenomena taking place in the broader region. Specifically, the results are analysed and interpreted in terms of a non-dimensional/scaling parameter dictating the urban heat island circulation reported from laboratory experiments (Fernando et al, 2010). We find that the field measurements obey the same scaling law during the day, in the absence of any other flow phenomena apart from the urban heating. During the night we find that the deduced non-dimensional value reduces to half (compared to that during the day); this is due to the presence of katabatic winds from Troodos mountains into the urban center of Nicosia and their cooling effect superimposed on diurnal urban heating. Based on this deduction, the impact of various proposed heat island mitigation measures in urban planning can be evaluated.

Resumen
A NiCrAl-type foil (alloy 214) was selected for evaluation for heat exchanger applications for a concentrated solar power (CSP) system. Due to the formation of a protective alumina surface oxide, this class of alloys can operate at higher temperatures than conventional stainless steels or even Ni-base alloys, such as alloy 625. Laboratory testing is being conducted at 1000° and 1050°C in dry air using 10 h thermal cycles in order to simulate the CSP duty cycle at a high temperature to accelerate the degradation process. Mass change data showed indications of degradation of the foils with exposures up to 8,000 h. Foil specimens also were stopped after 2,400 h to measure the loss of Al in the foil as a method to predict lifetime. Previous lifetime modeling results for 1h cycles in air with 10%H2O provided an initial basis to predict lifetime for this material to >100,000 h operating times as a function of foil thickness and exposure temperature for this application.

Resumen
Abstract A Round Robin study involving 19 coating suppliers and independent laboratories was conducted on tensile testing of thermally sprayed coatings to determine the accuracy and consistency of the tensile data among the participating labs and within a lab. One coating system (NiCrAl) and two adhesive types (film vs. liquid epoxy) were used. The results showed the average tensile strengths for the coating system using the liquid epoxy systems (EC2086/EC2214) were consistently higher than the average values which resulted using the film epoxy system (FMIOOO). However, less scatter in the results was observed when the FMIOOO film epoxy was used.

Resumen
The Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (KAPL) and Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory are testing a supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO2) Brayton power cycle system. The 100 kWe Integrated System Test (IST) is a two shaft recuperated closed Brayton cycle with a variable speed turbine driven compressor and a constant speed turbine driven generator using S-CO2 as the working fluid. The IST was designed to demonstrate operational, control and performance characteristics of an S-CO2 Brayton power cycle over a wide range of conditions. The IST design includes a comprehensive instrumentation and control system incorporating results of turbomachinery operational testing performed at Barber Nichols Inc (BNI) in the Sandia National Laboratory’s DOE test loop. A detailed dynamic performance model was used both to predict IST performance and to evaluate the testing completed at BNI. The IST construction was completed in mid 2011 and is currently undergoing shakedown testing. Results of testing completed to date and future testing plans will be summarized.
