Texto completoIn the middle of the 15th century, in central Vanuatu, the Kuwae volcano erupted. This cataclysm with global consequences gave rise, on a local scale, to the dislocation of a mythical island into an archipelago — the Shepherd Islands. For dozens of generations, the descendants of the pre-eruption people have been transmitting and confronting their versions of the Kuwae myth, particularly in the context of land disputes. These legitimizing discourses, endowed with a social efficacy at the very moment of their enunciation, summon a panoply of proofs, by virtue of a certain logic of historical truth. In the 1960s, it was these historico-mythical discourses from the old chiefdoms that enabled the archaeologist José Garanger to discover burials, thus corroborating the historical reliability of the oral tradition. Based on three distinct genres of discourse on the past, collected in the field in the Namakura and Nakanamanga languages, we propose to document and study the socio-historical scope of the Kuwae myth

Texto completoWe decided to study the history of the indigenous populations of Northwestern Amazonia from the beginning of the XVIIth century till mid XVIIIth century. More precisely, we analyzed the role and the evolution of the Indian chiefdoms in the double context of interethnic relations and European colonial enterprises. During this period, the great European powers – France, England, Holland, Spain and Portugal – strove for increasing their colonial possessions in South America. That is why with the beginning of the conquest of American lands, on one side we can observe that political conflicts opposing the great powers in Europe are exported into the colonized areas. On the other side, Portuguese missionaries systematically developed catechizing villages among native populations in order to promote Portuguese colonization and a first urbanization of the Amazon Valley. All these interventions took advantage of political networks, inner hierarchies and power positions existing among native societies before the arrival of the Europeans. As a matter of fact, missions and military expeditions provoked continuous wars transforming Indian chiefdoms into preferential mediators

This research is based on the “New Age Fairy Tale” written by Mr. Ho, Kuwan-Tsai, analyzing important literature elements like themes, subjects, plot developments, characters, view points, rhetoric, and harmony of composition and pictures in the story. Author’s unique use of words were generalized and the original story line were also compared to the one adapted. Findings are as followed: On the literature elements: 1. Most themes showing positive and active meanings. 2. Subjects are mostly about daily lives. 3. Majority of Plot developments use progressive or one-way structures. 4. Characters are mostly ordinary people or personified images. 5. View points are mostly the all-knowing point of view. 6. What’s common for rhetoric are figurative speech, repetition, and dinjan; what’s missing are words-hiding, impropriety, and inversion. 7. Three unique features on the displays of harmony between composition and pictures: complementation, supplement, and outlining differences. On the special writing skills: 1. The adapted story line usually keeps the original characters but changes the theme. 2. Three different styles for the story’s beginning and ending: agreement, author’s personalized ending, and ending with afterglow. 3. Frequent use of inducements as introduction for the following story line. 4. Use of the “alternating method” for articulating uniformity and differences of incidences. 5. Frequent use of “ellipsis” and “dash” for representing special meanings. 6. In rhyming, perfect rhyme is used when describing the same situation but not so much rhyming for lyrical descriptions and dialogues. 7. Most of the characters are named according to their personalities and unique features.
