Resumen
After COVID-19, communication through online platforms has increased, leading to an accumulation of massive amounts of conversational text data. With the growing importance of summarizing this text data to extract meaningful information, there has been active research on deep learning-based abstractive summarization. However, conversational data, compared to structured texts like news articles, often contains missing or transformed information, necessitating consideration from multiple perspectives due to its unique characteristics. In particular, vocabulary omissions and unrelated expressions in the conversation can hinder effective summarization. Therefore, in this study, we restructured by considering the characteristics of Korean conversational data, fine-tuning a pre-trained text summarization model based on KoBART, and improved conversation data summary perfomance through a refining operation to remove redundant elements from the summary. By restructuring the sentences based on the order of utterances and extracting a central speaker, we combined methods to restructure the conversation around them. As a result, there was about a 4 point improvement in the Rouge-1 score. This study has demonstrated the significance of our conversation restructuring approach, which considers the characteristics of dialogue, in enhancing Korean conversation summarization performance.

Whilst most of the literature focusing on the Korean peninsula has concentrated on how to achieve unification through confidence-building measures, dialogues, negotiation and diplomacy, little attention has been paid to how a unified Korean identity, a core component of any potential reunification scheme could develop and be sustained. The paper addresses this gap by: (1) defining what national identity is, and how Korean identities have been formed, (2) outlining how both South and North Korea have understood and used the concept of national identity, (3) suggesting possible grounds on which the two Koreas could build a new, common national identity.

Resumen
This study aims to assess the current state of human rights policies in North Korea, identify key areas for improvement, and suggest the significance of enhancing human rights in the country. Employing focus group interviews (FGI), I identified five policy categories and 20 specific issues, followed by an empirical hierarchical analysis (AHP) to ascertain their relative importance and priorities. The analysis ranked the policy categories as follows: human rights protection (31.8%), human rights diplomacy (24.8%), human rights system (19.5%), human rights capacity (16.1%), and human rights dialogue (7.8%). Regarding detailed policy priorities, the results revealed the most urgent to be petitioning the United Nations and assisting victims of North Korean human rights abuses (1st), effectively implementing North Korean human rights laws (2nd), maintaining the adoption of the UN Resolutions on North Korean Human Rights (3rd), securing protection measures for North Korean defectors in third countries (4th), and resolving issues related to separated families, abductees, and POWs (5th). From these findings, I propose several policy implications: (1) advocating for measurable and verifiable improvements in North Korea's human rights; (2) ensuring robust, effective, and consistent human rights engagement with North Korea; (3) normalizing the execution of North Korean human rights laws by addressing existing irregularities; (4) prioritizing societal consensus and agreement; and (5) stressing the necessity for human rights dialogues and technical cooperation with North Korea.

Resumen
Computer communication via text messaging or Social Networking Services (SNS) has become increasingly popular. At this time, many studies are being conducted to analyze user information or opinions and recognize emotions by using a large amount of data. Currently, the methods for the emotion recognition of dialogues requires an analysis of emotion keywords or vocabulary, and dialogue data are mostly classified as a single emotion. Recently, datasets classified as multiple emotions have emerged, but most of them are composed of English datasets. For accurate emotion recognition, a method for recognizing various emotions in one sentence is required. In addition, multi-emotion recognition research in Korean dialogue datasets is also needed. Since dialogues are exchanges between speakers. One’s feelings may be changed by the words of others, and feelings, once generated, may last for a long period of time. Emotions are expressed not only through vocabulary, but also indirectly through dialogues. In order to improve the performance of emotion recognition, it is necessary to analyze Emotional Association in Dialogues (EAD) to effectively reflect various factors that induce emotions. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a more accurate emotion recognition method to overcome the limitations of single emotion recognition. We implement Intrinsic Emotion Recognition (IER) to understand the meaning of dialogue and recognize complex emotions. In addition, conversations are classified according to their characteristics, and the correlation between IER is analyzed to derive Emotional Association in Dialogues (EAD) and apply them. To verify the usefulness of the proposed technique, IER applied with EAD is tested and evaluated. This evaluation determined that Micro-F1 of the proposed method exhibited the best performance, with 74.8% accuracy. Using IER to assess the EAD proposed in this paper can improve the accuracy and performance of emotion recognition in dialogues.

Resumen
Cooperation in natural disaster management between the two Koreas, so far, has been limited. In inter-Korean cooperation, dialogues and conflicts were repeated depending on the political and military situation on the Korean Peninsula. The purpose of this study is to address factors affecting the inter-Korean natural disaster management cooperation and to prepare a plan to improve the cooperative system. According to the analysis results of this study, North Korea's vulnerability to natural disasters has increased, but the natural disaster management system lacks response capacity. In terms of disaster cooperation factors, there was no permanent consultative body. The cooperation regulations were not clear, and the establishment of a mutual cooperation system such as information sharing was insufficient. In addition, a consumer-oriented approach that considers North Korea’s needs first has been not enough. Based on these analysis results, this study suggests the establishment of a border management committee between the two Koreas and a disaster management agreement.

Objectives This study aims to investigate the performance aspect of directive speech act and hedging sentence patterns for politeness according to power relations through the discourse analysis of the Business Korean textbooks and suggests the ways of improving Business Korean textbooks. Methods This study chose three kinds of Business Korean textbooks published after 2018. These textbooks are composed of basic levels and intermediate levels. To analyze these textbooks, this study classified subtypes of directive speech act at first and then arranged the performance aspect of directive speech act according to the context variables and the aspect of the use of hedging sentence patterns for politeness in directive speech act. Results Based on the findings of this study, Business Korean textbooks published after 2018 are mainly composed of dialogues related to boss’ directive speech act. For this reason, the textbooks mainly dealt with boss’ command among subtypes of directive speech act. And hedging sentence patterns of ‘-(으)세요’와 ‘아/어 주세요’ were most commonly utilized in boss’ command speech act. But, subordinate and coworkers’ dialogues and directive speech act in the workplace were very little descried in the textbooks. Various politeness strategies and hedging sentence patterns are seldom used in Business Korean textbooks. Conclusions In the future, Business Korean textbooks have to deal with various directive speech act dialogues according to the power relation. And they have to use various kinds of politeness strategies and hedging sentence patterns for Business Korean learners. But this study did not suggest educational methods for directive speech act. In short, how to deal with directive speech act in Business Korean textbooks will be discussed in a follow-up study.

Resumen
A short but cardinal passage of Goethe’s Faust is the rhymed dialogue between Faust and Helen at their first encounter: the depiction of the very idealistic encounter consists of the process by which the ancient Greek mythical figure Helen learns about the difference and charm of the German poetic language, as well as its formal practices explained and guided by Faust. This passage is not only a description of the meeting of Helen and Faust but also, at the same time, verses on poetry and poetics. This remarkable passage leads us to look into other cases in world literature. With this inquiry I have found out many similar cases in the literature of my own country and of other East Asian countries, Japan and China. As an example, here is presented a highly sublime poetic dialogue, drawn from an outstanding work of premodern Korean literature, the very first Korean “novel” Kumo-shinhwa, from the mid-fifteenth century: an exchange of ekphrasis, verses of picture description. With its perfect, more than perfect, rhyme, the poetic dialogue presents the symbolized union of two persons as a matter of course. By means of this poetic dialogue it will be pointed out how a standard canon does not remain itself but finds its incessant dialogues on behalf of other rather hidden works. Or in short: how the margin shifts itself through exchanges and translations.

Resumen
Minari, a film screened in 2020 directed by Lee Isaac Chung, presents a Korean immigrant family having moved to Arkansas in fulfilling their American dream at the cost of being displaced and out of place. By focusing on the attempt made by Jacob, the father, to recreate the imagined home which refers to South Korea, this study aims to show how the displacement and unhomeliness in the construction of diasporic imagination are displayed in the film. David, the son, not only feels out of place but is also obligated to feel a kind of belonging to both cultures. Jacob’s mother-in-law, Soon-Ja, having newly arrived in the US brings recent memories of home into the family that represent the Korean immigrant perspective of living in the US for the first time. This approach will show how the American film attempts to incorporate the new forms of portraying the ‘elsewhere’ which is an important characteristic of American dream narratives. The analysis is conducted by referring to Bhabha’s unhomeliness and Walder’s displacement in comprehending the contrast between the stereotypical characteristics of Korean immigrants and the American dream through the dialogues and scenes. We would like to argue that Minari follows the convention of the American dream narratives. However, due to displacement and unhomeliness, the film shows how Korean immigrants experience being awkwardly immersed within the mainstream American cultural discourse.

Resumen
The European Union (EU) and South Korea (Korea) created the world’s biggest free trade deal since 1994 in 2011. It was not only the biggest in terms of economic size, it was also the most ambitious one that the EU has ever negotiated. The EU-Korea free trade agreement (EU-Korea FTA) is ambitious in the sense that it tackles not only the tariff barriers but also the non-tariff ones to reach full liberalization in trade. This article aims to weigh the European normative power via this interesting trade deal, the EU-Korea FTA. It takes a normative perspective to examine the concretization of the EU normative power with measurable standards, and tries to discern the impacts of the European values and norms on Korean reforms in trade. The article will focus on the regulatory network built up by the two sides in order to enforce and monitor the provisions especially on non-tariff barriers(NTBs) issues, and it concludes with the finding that the degree of normativity that the EU norms possess in Korean market is moderate, with strong rhetorical commitment, slow formal adoption, and unremarkable behavioural compliance. Certain European values have indeed been transformed into concrete regulations in the FTA, such as IPRs regulation, sustainable development, etc. However, for the implementation of the agreement to be effective, it takes not only government’s endeavour to enforce regulatory framework, but also more communication and cooperation on the social level to create this normative legitimacy for the Korean society to take in the European norms and values. It is believed that continuous dialogues through the regulatory network on different layers of the society would still be necessary on fostering and strengthening the bilateral relationship between the EU and Korea.

Resumen
Objectives The study aims to compare middle school English textbooks in Finland and Korea in terms of the structure of a unit, its contents, and the readability of reading texts. Methods To show the differences and similarities in the structure of a unit, the organization of textbooks was comparatively described. Then, the sequence of sections and the length of each section were examined. For the comparison of the content of the textbooks, communicative functions, language forms, and topics were analyzed. In addition, text readability scores were measured at the discourse level using Coh-Metrix version 3.0. Results English textbooks in Finland and Korea showed considerable differences in organization, length, types of activities, etc. First of all, in Finnish English textbooks, the same characters appeared throughout the textbook, while Korean English textbooks showed different characters in every unit. Therefore, Finnish textbooks mainly used narratives and dialogues centered around the characters, while Korean textbooks showed a relatively high proportion of informative texts. In Korean textbooks, communicative functions and language forms are clearly separated and act as the axis of the textbook, but Finnish textbooks utilize language forms for communication practice. There were no salient differences in the level of readability between the two countries. Conclusions This study gives the following implications for developing Korean middle school English textbooks. Using colloquial narrative texts can increase the authenticity of input without increasing the vocabulary in the national curriculum. The dichotomy between language forms and communicative functions needs to be moderated for the development of oral communicative competence. It is also worth considering adding extra reading materials to textbooks to encourage students' autonomy and give teachers flexibility in the selection of teaching materials. Also, it is necessary to think about ways to creatively utilize the positive effects of translation activities for lower-level students.

Resumen
During the post-Cold War period, North Korea(NK) found an exit from severe diplomatic isolation by improving its relationship with the U.S. and Japan. NK and the U.S. started dialogues as the level of councilor in Beijing in 1988, and they had five meetings in 1991. Both countries maintained continuity of talks at that time. Meanwhile, South Korea(SK) endeavored to ensure that NK-U.S. relationship should not overshadow the SK-NK relationship. In that same year, NK also initiated formal discussions with Japan for the normalization of relations. SK outwardly supported the normalization of NK-Japan. However, SK actually wanted to manage the improvement of the NKJapan relationship through prior consultations with Japan. Normalization of talks between NK-Japan started in January 1991. However, it was recognized that it would be difficult to succeed without the solution to the North Korean nuclear issue. Furthermore, issue, such as NK's abduction of the Japanese, emerged as important dialogue topics. Hence, both states had to be satisfied with the initiation of talks for normalizing the relationship. Eventually, despite its efforts to improve its relationship with U.S. and Japan, NK did not achieve its goals in 1991. In contrast, SK obtained results on the SK-NK relationship and diplomatic competitions of UN during the same period. This study shows two facts of the diplomatic history: first, SK and U.S. fiercely argued about the direction of the North Korea policy under the table in 1991. Second, with regard to the Normalization Talks of NK-Japan in 1991, SK used to SK-USSR economic cooperation as diplomatic means so that Japanese Reparation Policy did not disturb the SK-NK economic cooperation.

Resumen
When the books written by Jesuit missionaries were introduced to Joseon Korea via China during the 18th century, Joseon Confucian scholars were drawn to not only western science and technologies but also to theological ideas centered on Christian spirituality. Among many foreign conceptions, the most alien were the following three: immortality of the soul; eternal life in heaven or in hell after death; and finally, the resurrection of the body. There had been three responses from all levels of society: refutation, recognition, and reconciliation. First, Shin Hudam (1702–1761) wrote a book, Disputation on Western Learning, to dispute the above three doctrines as being most unreasonable and contradictory. Meanwhile, Jeong Yag-Jong (1760–1801) found that the doctrines were the true path to the salvation of human suffering and wrote the first catechistic book in vernacular Korean in the way that appealed to common people with Confucian backgrounds. Finally, Jeong Yag-Yong (1762–1836) was extremely careful, neither embracing nor rejecting, yet suggested alternative ways to address the core Christian theological problems without crossing the boundaries of Confucianism. All three were active dedicated responses to Christian spirituality and genuine Christian-Confucian dialogues, which also reflected common concerns and attitudes toward a new religion in Korean society.

Resumen
In 2021, South Korea will make the Squid Game drama series with the mystery horror genre. The research will look at the political thinking of Thomas Hobbes in this series with the aim of analyzing the form of natural consciousness, social contract in the form of the State which is broadcast through storylines, dialogues and descriptions of the situation in the Korean drama series Squid Game. This article is a literature study on the state of nature, social contract and the concept of the state from Thomas Hobbes' political thought through the drama series Squid Game produced from South Korea. His opinion of the state is scary, cruel, and obeyed like Leviathan to make the disorderly state of human nature controllable. Human nature is homo homini lupus or humans are wolves to each other. The social contract according to Thomas Hobbes is an agreement between the people and the state, but the state is not bound by the social contract. The state/king position is above the social contract, the state has absolute authority or is called the king, it cannot be wrong. This study concludes that in the Korean drama series Squad Game, there is a thought by Thomas Hobbes which states the importance of absolute state power to create perfection. Peace can be obtained by presenting fear to the individual through the State, conflict will be avoided, society will be subject to the law with fear that is continuously maintained by the State.

Resumen
Despite differences between Korea and Germany, German unification provides valuable lessons for Korean unification. Maintaining a dialogue channel between the two Koreas is critical for keeping peace and promoting reconciliation. It is also imperative that South Korean humanitarian work resume in the North. With humanitarian projects, South Korean NGOs can increase contact with ordinary North Korean people. “Change through contact” is a crucial method of demonstrating love for those in North Korea, promoting relationship-building and trust that may facilitate in creating a foundation for rebuilding North Korea and ultimately reuniting the Korean people.

Resumen
The challenge of nuclear proliferation in the Korean peninsula since 2006 with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea’s (DPRK) first nuclear test had not only drawn the global attention but created a perilous situation on the peninsula. Further the Hwasong-15 Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) of DPRK that was tested in February 2023 and thereafter has heightened tensions between Washington and Japan with Pyongyang. The United States’ (U.S.) diplomatic efforts to engage North Korea through bilateral means in recent times resulted in the first historic summit in Singapore (2018) and later in Vietnam (2019). Though these are undoubtedly positive developments, however, in the absence of any tangible deal after the Hanoi summit, the big question remains will the U.S. and North Korea end their mutual misperceptions, and work towards a viable solution. At the moment, the very fact that since 2019, the U.S. and North Korea have had no official dialogues is evident that misperceptions and distrust continues and finding any sort of solution is going to be a very difficult task now that North Korea has closed its borders since the COVID-19 pandemic started. The more isolated Pyongyang is, the more belligerent it will become in testing its missiles.

Resumen
Abstract This paper explores the memories of military prostitutes in US camptowns in South Korea through the film titled Tour of Duty (Kŏmi ŭi ttang, 2012). The film experiments with a genre of documentary, showcasing stories of three ex-prostitutes who struggle with their past experiences with US GIs. One of them carries on numerous dialogues with evil spirits, which give her physical and psychological pains that haunt her endlessly. Another woman keeps wandering in search of traces of her mother and friend, both of whom were prostitutes for US soldiers. She traces her memory of them around the ruins of what was called the monkey house, where US military prostitutes with venereal diseases were relocated. The film shows three women haunted by ghosts of the Cold War while remaining invisible and often forced to be silent within Korean society. The paper deals with gendered memory of the Cold War through the stories of wandering ghosts in the dilapidated streets of US camptown sites in South Korea. Pak Kyŏngt’ae and Kim Tongnyŏng, the directors of the film, challenge the boundaries of documentary film, experimenting with various filmic strategies such as interviews, monologues, fantasies, and personal memories.

Resumen
Globalization's huge expansion of information technology has become a crucial component in the Indonesian people's desire for Hallyu. Hallyu is linked with the realm of entertainment, including music, theater, cinema, and a variety of programs beautifully packaged to promote Korean culture. The growth of South Korean films may also be witnessed in how overseas viewers can appreciate them. The Negotiation, for example, is able to reach the Indonesian market and is available on the local video-on-demand streaming program, Vidio. There are a variety of lobbying and negotiation strategies which can be linked to The Negotiation. Five scenes and dialogues with messages related to communication techniques and business negotiations were selected and analyzed using the semiotic theory of Ferdinand De Saussure's model. A qualitative approach is used in this research procedure. This qualitative research adheres to the symbolic interactionism paradigm, which views human activity as the construction of meaning.

Resumen
In recent years, there are a lot of popular Asian films or dramas that got Indonesian remake. It leads to cultural shifts between the original one and the remake version which receives a good reaction from the viewers. Among the Indonesian remake films, the researchers found a significant cultural shift in Sweet 20, 2017 Indonesian film which is produced based on a popular South Korean film, Miss Granny. The aim of this research is to reveal the cultural differences contained in the films Sweet 20 and Miss Granny. This research employs analysis descriptive analytical analysis as the technique to analyze the data and use the theory of transcultural adaptation by Linda Hutcheon (2006), Koentjaraningrat’s theory which concerns seven elements of cultures and supported by Bronislaw Malinowski. This research uses descriptive qualitative method because it is related to the data which are text and visual taken from the dialogues and visualizations in Miss Granny and Sweet 20 films. Meanwhile, the researchers apply three techniques for data collection: observation (watching the films), documentation (documenting the dialogues), and recording (screenshotting the scenes). After examining it, the researchers found five elements as cultural shifts between Miss Granny and Sweet 20; namely religious system, social norms, art, living equipment, and language.

Resumen
Han (한恨) is a complicated Korean sociocultural concept which related to unresolved resentment, pain, grief, and anger. This han concept is often used in Korean cultural productions, for instance JTBC Korean drama, “Ssanggappocha (쌍갑포차), Mystic Pop-up Bar (MPUB)”. It tells about the characters’ han stories along with the process of how they resolve it. Therefore, this research used MPUB drama as research object to see the representation and finding the types of han. The theory used in this research is Andrew Sung Park’s theory (1993) about the structure of han. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method to analyze the data which is the dialogues of related scenes. The result of this research is out of nine forms of han according to Park, there are five forms of han discovered in the drama. Those forms are: (1) the han of individual: conscious-passive; (2) the han of individual: unconscious-active; (3) the han of individual: unconscious-passive; (4) the han of group: unconscious-passive; and (5) the han of nature. Generally, the dominant form found in the drama is han of individual expressed in passive way since the characters showed their process of accepting the han rather than being aggressive toward it.

Resumen
This article explores the psychology that motivates Yang Jung-Ung and his actors in the process of translating Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream into a Korean style. By focusing on the ways of showing the theme of the play in modern styles fused with traditional modes of theatrical practice, the director attempts to develop his own ways of expression to communicate with the modern Korean audience. In this process, Yang reconstructs the dialogues between the characters rather than rely heavily on Shakespeare’s text and language. For this reason, his production has often been criticised for missing Shakespeare’s poetry. However, the beauty of poetry is not only in Shakespeare’s language itself, but rather it is in the mental process of how the artist and audiences understand and translate its meaning in their cultural contexts. Shakespeare’s language includes a great deal of imagery that provides the artists with concrete information for constructing the stage mise-en-scène. In Yang’s production, Shakespeare’s poetry is expressed through the visual images created by the performer’s physical bodies, which reflects the director’s interpretation of the play in his cultural context. By analysing the performers’ physical movements, this article studies how Yang perceives the theme of Shakespeare’s Dream in relation to a Korean cultural context and presents his unique vision on the play.

Resumen
Women account for over eighty percent of recent North Korean defectors arriving in South Korea, yet there is dearth of gender-based research. Given the speed with which the dialogue on denuclearization with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK, North Korea) has progressed since 2017, there is a surprising gap in research on possible health threats. If sanctions are eased, interactions with these previously isolated people will increase leading to potential health problems. This article reviews studies published since 2000 to understand physical and mental health faced in DPRK, among North Korean defectors to South Korea, and to provide policy recommendations. A content analysis of ninety studies found that mental health challenges are severe for North Korean defectors, and that women suffer differently than men during defection and its aftermath. We recommend a more nuanced and gendered approach for future research in order to devise tangible solutions to improve the health of North Koreans in general, and defector women and children in particular.

Resumen
This paper aims to explore a connection between diasporic identity and culinary choice revolving around the life of the principal character Koonja in Grace M. Cho’s Tastes Like War: A Memoir (2021). It investigates how Koonja performs her culinary choices as a tool to heal and nurture her abjected diasporic identity. To do so, drawing upon the theoretical insights from diaspora and culinary identity, the paper employs the method of qualitative content analysis while analyzing and interpreting the memoir. The paper tracks Koonja’s sense of being displaced and dislocated for various reasons: Japanese and American violence in South Korea, the trauma of losing her family members, rejection and stigma in South Korea as a Yankee whore, giving birth to a son whose father was a mystery, marrying an American man in South Korea and immigrating to the United States (US) and discriminations in the US, and all these turmoils finally causing schizophrenia. The analysis and interpretation of the memoir reveal a finding: amidst Koonja’s sense of diasporic displacement and worthlessness, culinary kinship functions as a means of assimilation, and her culinary choices, which have been saturated by nostalgia for and memory of Korean food, reunite her with an emotional and a gustatory home. The finding implies a therapeutic connection between diaspora and culinary choices revealing food as a healing space in the life of Koonja. Hence, the paper not only offers a fresh perspective to look at the memoir but also creates avenues for critical dialogues in the discourse of diaspora and culinary identity.

Resumen
This study compared and analyzed saseol (texts like lyrics and dialogues) of Chinese Peking opera Hwayongdo (華容道 The Huarong Path) and the passage of 'Hwayongdo' in Korean pansori (musical storytelling) Jeokbyeokga. To this end, reviewing the written materials related to the Peking opera Hwayongdo, it found that it was first included under the title Dangcao in Chewangfu quben, a collection of librettos of early Peking opera works from the mid-Qing Dynasty (1636-1912). The title Hwayongdo was first used in the 'Qingshengping ban ximu' (repertoire of plays by the Qingshengping troupe) of the Chinese literature Dao Xian yilai Liyuan xinian xiaolu (a small record of the theater from the Daoguang and Xianfeng) at the 4th year of the Daoguang Emperor (1824). The results of comparing the saseol of the Peking opera Hwayongdo included in Jingju chuantong juben huibian (a collection of traditional Peking opera scripts) with that of 'Hwayongdo' in Jeokbyeokga performed by Song Sun-seop are as follows. First, the Hwayongdo of the two countries were different in terms of saseol composition by each section. Scenes were added to the beginning section in Peking opera whereas they were added in the middle and final sections in pansori. Second, the development of saseol contents was generally similar, but there were differences in the focal point of the description. Pansori 'Hwayongdo' had a strong tendency to express the character's way of speaking, expression, and appearance vividly and realistically. However, the Peking opera Hwayongdo was concisely organized around the plot. This phenomenon is not only because Chinese audiences are more familiar with the contents of the novel The Romance of the Three Kingdoms , but also because the dialogue, acting, and makeup of Peking opera actors were able to vividly express Hwayongdo and thus a realistic description was unnecessary. On the other hand, Korean audiences would have been very curious about the exotic subject matter and characters appearing in 'Hwayongdo' and to satisfy this curiosity, a more detailed description and added content would have been needed. This study are significant in that they confirm how the traditional performing art of China and Korea, both based on the same novel The Romance of the Three Kingdoms , has developed as different types of contents in the process of accommodating the performance environment and the taste of audiences.

The process of engaging the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea stands at a crossroads that presents challenges as well as opportunities. We believe that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) can indirectly help to facilitate North Korean reforms in three ways: (i) Political: via ASEAN’s ability to function as a neutral facilitator of dialogue; (ii) Economic: as models of economic reform for North Korea (particularly based on the experiences of Singapore and Vietnam); (iii) Social: the Choson Exchange based in Singapore is an ideal location for enabling North Koreans to study abroad and thus gain a greater understanding of other countries.

Resumen
In the mid-1970s, Japanese Prime Minister Miki Takeo actively promoted mediation diplomacy and passionately worked for a solution to the Korean question through great power guarantees from the United States and China. He sent his intermediary to Pyongyang and advocated dialogue between the United States and North Korea as well as between South and North Korea. President Gerald Ford and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, however, worried that Miki’s initiative could destabilize the favorable equilibrium for the United States and South Korea by either isolating the South Koreans or making them seem American puppets. Particularly, after the fall of South Vietnam in 1975, Washington remained receptive to South Korea, which worried that Japanese support would strengthen North Korea. The Chinese, while supporting Pyongyang’s diplomatic stance, also remained reluctant to join any bold diplomatic initiative. Miki made little significant progress apart from several rounds of frank exchange of views with American leaders. Still, these discussions between American and Japanese leaders demonstrate the nature and persistence of Japan’s concerns on the Korean question.

Resumen
Purpose. The article focuses on the study of film titles that we consider an integral part of cinema text from the point of view of its special sign nature. A film title gives the key to the subject matter of the film story line. The translator faces a number of challenges as it is essential to capture the semantic multidimensionality of the original title in order to transmit accurately the same vision, sense and tonality embodied in the original title. Methodology. The study is done in the light of the synergetic approach to film translation that emphasizes the dominant role of the image-sense and its influences on translation solutions. The polysemiotic nature of a film text should be taken into account while dealing with film title translations. Results. The image-sense is an integral unity that can be cognized only in the context of the whole as the essence of semiosis, unity of individual and general, creating an authentic image in a viewer’s mind. Image-sense is characterized by unpredictability and ambiguity that can be eliminated due to video image and the interaction of some semiotic systems in creating an integral entity. The research materials are film dialogues of Korean and American feature films.
