Resumen

In this study, a questionnaire translated from a national survey on physical activity of 2,002 U.S. adults (Morrow, Jackson. Bazzarre. Milne, & Blair, 1999) was adopted to survey a random sample of 812 Chinese adults through a city wide telephone interview. The respondents demonstrated poor awareness of the role of physical activity in disease prevention. Older adults possessed poorer knowledge of physical activity but higher activity levels than their younger counterparts did. Results indicated that the level and knowledge of physical activity of Chinese adults are related to age. The perceived importance of physical activity was the lowest among other health behaviors. Age, educational level, and knowledge of appropriate exercise prescription to achieve health benefits were factors used to discriminate among sedentary, somewhat active, and physically active groups. The importance of intervention programs to raise the physical activity level and knowledge of Chinese adults was demonstrated by this study.

Resumen

<span>This article presents the use of a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) for the wind energy production and electrical energy injection produced into an electrical grid. The objective is to perform modeling and direct control of the Wind Energy conversion System (WECS), taking into account the problems of wind speed variations and generator maintenance. The direct torque control (DTC) is applied to the machine-side converter and direct power control (DPC) is applied to the grid-side converter. The performance of WECS is tested in MATLAB / SIMULINK environment simulation with a real wind profile of Essaouira-Morroco city. The simulation results obtained show that the proposed direct controls provide high performance in terms of setpoint tracking, speed, stability and power quality.</span>

Resumen

Reading is of paramount importance in the modern era. It is an invaluable tool to instill knowledge in people and lead them to sustainable development. This study aimed to investigate the shared responsibilities of stakeholders in promoting early literacy and reading culture in Rwanda. The study was conducted in five districts in Rwanda, one in each province, including the city of Kigali. This study is conducted within the framework of the Theory of Emergent Literacy (EL) pioneered by Marie Clay (1926–2007) (Rohde, 2015; Teale, 1986; Tracey and Morrow, 2006), according to which literacy development begins very early in life and children’s early reading and writing experiences are of considerable importance in their overall literacy development. The study applied a descriptive research design, which consists of collecting quantitative and qualitative data. The target population was 437,988, which was the total number of households in the five districts. It involved 598 parents in selected households, school administrators, and local authorities. A convenience sampling technique was used to select parents, while a purposive sampling technique was applied to select school administration and local authorities. A questionnaire, interviews, and observation were used as data collection tools. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The findings of the study revealed that parents carry out their responsibilities and interactions with children by cultivating a reading culture and reading stories to them before school age. Findings also showed that parents acknowledge teachers’ interactions with children through giving them take-home reading assignments. The strategies that are used to develop early literacy and reading culture include showing pictures, using games and songs, and devoting some hours to reading on specific days in a week. The study identified challenges including parents’ illiteracy and poverty preventing them from being involved in their children’s education, the lack of enough books in schools, and overcrowded classes. It is recommended that government support be increased by making reading materials more accessible to children; that parents’ role in developing the reading culture and early literacy should be more visible; and that there is a need for adult literacy education to enable parents to read to their children and monitor their reading practice.

In the global knowledge economy, knowledge-intensive industries and knowledge workers are extensively seen as the primary factors to improve the welfare and competitiveness of cities. To attract and retain such industries and workers, cities produce knowledge-based urban development strategies, where such strategising is an important development mechanism for cities and their economies. This paper investigates knowledge-based urban development strategies of Brisbane, Australia that support generation, attraction, and retention of investment and talent. The paper puts forward a clear understanding on the policy frameworks, and relevant applications of Brisbane’s knowledge-based urban development experience in becoming a prosperous knowledge city, and concludes by providing invaluable insights and directions for other cities seeking knowledge-based urban development.

Resumen

That the cultural industries are highly networked and operate in clusters is now well established. The notion of cluster is linked to the idea of place-based advantage, with cultural industries gaining competitive advantage from mobilising the resources of places to compete in global markets. ‘Place’ in the cultural industries is frequently taken to be the city, where city is seen as the key resource for cultural industry clusters and a primary point of intervention for cultural industry policy in creative city policy-making. In this article, I want to look at some of the implications of these moves for both academic research and policy discussion. The reasons for this emphasis on policy relates to some large questions of urban governance and cultural politics surrounding the proactive government of clusters which are raised by recent work on the cultural industries, notably by Alan Scott.

Kansas has been a part of a stable craton since at least the beginning of the Paleozoic some 550 m. y. ago. The majority of the sedimentary rocks deposited during the last 550 m. y. are products of numerous inundations by shallow seas. Interspersed with these transgressions were periods of erosion, many coinciding with widespread uplift. The distribution of reservoir-quality rocks has been controlled by the varying structural and depositional settings in both time and space. The identification of these reservoirs begins with a knowledge of the geologic history as detailed by the vast subsurface information base, mainly wire line logs and completion records, that is available for Kansas. Seismic profiling has been and will continue to be used effectively to resolve structural traps. The trend in exploration in the midcontinent has been to strengthen the search for reservoirs associated with more subtle structures and difficult-to-find stratigraphic traps. Stratigraphic traps will become increasingly important, particularly within established production trends. The many unconformities in the midcontinent stratigraphic column afford numerous types of trapping geometry such as truncation beneath an unconformity, traps associated with buried valleys, discontinuous onlap onto erosion surfaces, and porosity pinchouts due to changes in original depositional conditions and diagenetic alteration. The most widespread petroleum accumulations in Kansas occur in structural and stratigraphic traps associated with the pre-Pennsylvanian unconformity. Production associated with the unconformity includes numerous lower Paleozoic pay zones which subcrop directly beneath the unconformity in the Sedgwick, Salina, and Anadarko basins; the Arbuckle production on the Central Kansas uplift; and numerous fields which payout from either conglomerates or weathered zones along the unconformity. Considerable production also occurs farther up-section with the Cherokee and Lansing-Kansas City groups, and down-section in the Viola Formation and Simpson Group. In order to demonstrate the potential use of the seismic method in defining subtle traps, synthetic seismograms were produced for selected strata in central Kansas. Critical attributes of reservoir rock and associated strata conducive to seismic stratigraphic processing include the thickness of a potential reservoir bed and its velocity and density contrast with adjacent strata. Thicker strata such as the Morrow and most lower Paleozoic formations may be more easily defined by seismic-stratigraphic methods. In contrast, the stratigraphy of the Pennsylvanian and Permian cyclothems may not be amenable to definition by seismic methods because these units contain heterogenous reservoirs interbedded with other thin strata of similar composition.

When travelling to a new city, we acquire knowledge about its physical terrain, directions, historical facts and aesthetic features. Engaging in tourism practices, such as guided walking tours, provides experiences of a city that are necessarily mediated and partial. This has led scholars in tourism studies and more recently in philosophy to question the epistemological value of city tours, critiquing them as passive, lacking in autonomous agency, and providing misrepresentative experiences of the city. In response, we argue that the mediated and partial knowledge of a city acquired through city tours is not epistemologically disvaluable. Although city tours involve the transmission of testimonial knowledge, this does not necessarily render tourists as passive and non-autonomous. Instead, tourists have the potential to actively participate in the generation of their knowledge, given that testimonial knowledge is often actively co-produced. Moreover, we argue that city tours also provide a tourist with valuable ‘objectual knowledge’ of a city, which has the potential to be first-personal, active, and does not necessarily misrepresent the city’s identity. This type of knowledge is valuable both for tourists as credible epistemic agents, and for the city itself, as the knowledge generated by the tour can facilitate an accurate representation of the city and promote social transformation. We conclude by highlighting four further epistemic and ethical implications of our argument.

Resumen

A smart city can be defined as a city exploiting information and communication technologies to enhance the quality of life of its citizens by providing them with improved services while ensuring a conscious use of the available limited resources. This paper introduces a conceptual framework for the smart city, namely, the Smart City Service System. The framework proposes a vision of the smart city as a service system according to the principles of the Service-Dominant Logic and the service science theories. The rationale is that the services offered within the city can be improved and optimized via the exploitation of information shared by the citizens. The Smart City Service System is implemented as an ontology-based system that supports the decision-making processes at the government level through reasoning and inference processes, providing the decision-makers with a common operational picture of what is happening in the city. A case study related to the local public transportation service is proposed to demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the framework. An experimental evaluation using the Situation Awareness Global Assessment Technique (SAGAT) has been performed to measure the impact of the framework on the decision-makers’ level of situation awareness.

Resumen

Having the ability to give form to cooperative environments while easing the process of collective reflection, serious games have been put forward since the sixties, as a way to overcome challenges in participatory processes. This paper discusses the City Makers game prototype and reports on the game development process, with a focus on five key game-testing sessions. The overall aim of the serious game is to foster collective reflection and facilitate knowledge transfer in and across multidisciplinary groups. The hypothesis is that framing the participation process in a game format facilitates idea generation and dialogue between stakeholders. Therefore, the paper concludes with a set of challenges a serious game has to overcome in order to communicate knowledge from one group to another

Cities worldwide are building ‘resilience’ in the face of water-related challenges. International networks have emerged through which urban communities draw on each other’s experiences and expertise in order to become resilient cities. Learning is a key principle in resilience-building, but thus far little empirical research is available on city-to-city learning and learning for urban resilience. This paper presents an analysis of how policy relevant knowledge on the notion of ‘Water Squares’ is exchanged between Rotterdam and Mexico City. We mobilize a framework composed of four distinct phases: exploration and marketing (phase 1), building pipelines (phase 2), translation and adoption (phase 3), and internalization and reflection (phase 4). Critical in first phase was introspective analysis of one’s own systems, strengths and weaknesses, rather than an outward-looking search for knowledge or mentees. During the second phase, the cities reframed their own narratives to match those of their counterparts as a way to create a mutual understanding of each other’s struggles and histories. This facilitated policy and knowledge exchange as equal partners on a basis of trust. In the third phase, strong local leaders were recruited into the process, which was key to anchor knowledge in the community and to reduce the risks of losing institutional memory in centralized, hierarchical institutions. For the fourth phase it should be stressed that by internalizing such lessons, cities might strengthen not only their own resilience, but also enhance future exchanges with other cities.

Este artigo mostra uma metodologia analítica aplicada ao estudo de clima urbano, inspirada no Urban Climate Map (UC-Map). Foram utilizados uma série de camadas de informação espacial, medições climáticas e conhecimento do clima urbano para avaliar e mapear o potencial térmico e dinâmico em área urbana, visando identificar diferentes campos térmicos. As informações foram agrupadas em quatro eixos principais, a saber densidade construtiva, albedo, cobertura vegetal e altimetria. A proposta metodológica foi aplicada para a cidade de Juiz de Fora-MG, uma área urbana de médio porte, localizada em uma região de mares de morros, na qual fatores como declividade e altitude são importantes no potencial térmico e dinâmico. O resultado da aplicação desta metodologia converge com os dados experimentais e evidencia os efeitos do uso do solo, dos materiais construtivos e do fluxo de pessoas e mercadorias na definição de diferentes campos térmicos. Evidencia que a distribuição e o tamanho da cobertura vegetal, além da amplitude da ventilação, interferem e proporcionam ambientes mais frescos e, portanto, reduzem o armazenamento de calor. A metodologia apresentada é simples de aplicar e pode ser adaptada para outras áreas urbanas com características semelhantes às de Juiz de Fora-MG. Methodological Propose Applied to The Urban Climate Study A B S T R A C TThis article shows an analytical methodology applied to the urban climate study, inspired by the Urban Climate Map (UC-Map). A series of layers of spatial information, climate measurements and knowledge of the urban climate were used to evaluate and map the thermal and dynamic potential in an urban area, in order to identify different thermal fields. The information was grouped into four main axes, namely constructive density, albedo, vegetation cover and altimetry. The methodological proposal was applied to the city of Juiz de Fora-MG, a medium-sized urban area, located in a region of sea of hills, in which factors such as slope and altitude are important in the thermal and dynamic potential. The result of the application of this methodology converges with the experimental data and evidences the effects of the use of the soil, constructive materials and the flow of people and merchandise in the definition of different thermal fields. It shows that the distribution and size of the vegetation cover, besides the amplitude of the ventilation interfere and provide fresher environments and therefore reduce the storage of heat. The methodology presented is simple to apply and can be adapted to other urban areas with characteristics similar to those of Juiz de Fora-MG.Keywords: Thermal fields, urban climate, spatial model, urban climate map, dynamic potential.

Setrag Manoukian’s City of Knowledge in Twentieth Century Iran: Shiraz,History, and Poetry combines the application of Michel Foucault’s conceptualizationof the relationship between “knowledge” and “power” with a “historicaland ethnographic investigation” into the sociocultural and political lifeof twentieth-century Shiraz in order to portray a history of Iran and Iraniansthat differs from the usual accounts focusing on Tehran.The book is intended for both Iranian studies scholars and the generalpublic interested in the history of Iran. Resumen

Economic forces and industrialization are determinant factors in wealth creation; however, an important part of the equation has been omitted by most of the industrial and social players, especially in developing countries. The business cycle’s impact on the environment, on the life cycle assessment, and on the biocapacity of the earth has had a tremendous effect on the equilibrium of all the sub-systems (economic, social, and environmental resources). Based on these systemic requirements, a synergistic approach involving all the stakeholders has been collated and a systemic framework, the Sustainable WIT Model has been developed, and is designed to build “sustainable clusters of high value, globally competitive industries” for developing regions. This paper discusses how the Sustainable WIT Model has been applied to one of the most important industries currently having an impact on economic, social, and environmental ecosystems worldwide - the sustainable construction industry - in a region where it is creating suitable conditions for a city to become part of a knowledge-based economy. The SWIT Model considers the economic growth of the industrial life cycle as a priority, but also includes other external forces that have previously been ignored, such as societal impact, human well-being, and bio capacity, in such a way that the sustainability cycle can be economically viable.

Resumen

Public administrations handle large amounts of data in relation to their internal processes as well as to the services that they offer. Following public-sector information reuse regulations and worldwide open data publication trends, these administrations are increasingly publishing their data as open data. However, open data are often released without agreed data models and in non-reusable formats, reducing interoperability and efficiency in data reuse. These aspects hinder interoperability with other administrations and do not allow taking advantage of the associated knowledge in an efficient manner. This paper presents the continued work performed by the Zaragoza city council over more than 15 years in order to generate its knowledge graph, which constitutes the key piece of their data management system, whose main strengthen is the open-data-by-default policy. The main functionalities that have been developed for the internal and external exploitation of the city’s open data are also presented. Finally, some city council experiences and lessons learned during this process are also explained.

Resumen

Purpose. This study aims to examine the potential for knowledge-based urban development (KBUD) in Lviv, focusing on how city authority, educational institutions and IT cluster can serve as primary drivers for this model and which knowledge zones will define the spatial development of Lviv as a knowledge city. Given Lviv’s dynamic growth and the challenges posed by Ukraine’s current socio-economic climate, KBUD provides a strategic approach to promote sustainable development, enhance the city’s role at both the national and global levels, and shape Lviv's brand as an innovative city. Methodology. The study conducted from June 2023 to June 2024, involved a multifaceted research approach to understand KBUD's applicability in Lviv. Spatial planning documents, legal frameworks, and population and quality of life indicators from 2011-2024 were analyzed through comparative geographical, statistical, and graphical methods. To assess the impact of the Lviv IT Cluster on urban transformation, expert interviews were conducted, involving 12 specialists from urban management, strategic planning, academia, youth policy, and technology sectors. These experts assessed the city’s KBUD readiness, the IT cluster’s transformative role, and the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) of KBUD implementation. Results. Lviv’s KBUD potential is evidenced by its growing population, proximity to the EU, and an established IT cluster – the largest in Ukraine. The Lviv IT Cluster’s development has proceeded in three stages: initial formation (2011-2013), rapid expansion (2014-2019), and pandemic- and war-induced constraints since 2020. While the cluster has catalyzed Lviv’s economic and intellectual capital growth, challenges include spatial inequality and economic disproportions. The expert assessment positioned Lviv’s KBUD at a median score of 7 from 10, with the city authority, universities, NGOs, and the IT Cluster recognized as KBUD drivers, albeit with the city council leading in importance. In the context of the Lviv IT Cluster, it has been found that it is currently a cluster initiative, as there is no clear spatial localization of the formed IT cluster within the city. Its impact remains insufficient to serve as the driving force behind Lviv's knowledge-based urban development. The proposed model for Lviv’s knowledge-based spatial development suggests creating nine knowledge zones, including central zone as a connectivity hub, linking other zones and managing KBUD resources, as well as educational (emerging around university campuses as knowledge production hubs) and industrial zones with growth potential. This model aims to establish a network of centers, foster connections between the zones, and create a central axis for KBUD. Scientific Novelty. This study contributes a comprehensive model for KBUD specific to the Ukrainian context, with Lviv as a case study. It demonstrates the potential of an integrated approach combining intellectual, cultural, economic, and environmental components to enhance urban sustainability. The study’s findings emphasize a collaborative ecosystem involving municipal, educational, civic and private sectors in fostering knowledge-driven urban transformation. Practical Significance. The insights gathered provide a foundational framework for implementing KBUD in Ukrainian cities, addressing both current challenges and long-term strategies. By emphasizing the creation of knowledge zones and local-level planning, this model can guide cities in utilizing their intellectual assets effectively.

Resumen

COVID19 pandemic became the primer focus of health problem by the government since the case was increasing every month in 2020. The impact of this pandemic was spread quickly across many areas including Surabaya city. Youth generation often found to be a silent source of infection. Furthermore, young people behavior often ignoring health prevention policy makes the infection more easily to spread. This condition might be because of their knowledge regarding COVID19 was relatively not enough. Factor that may affect their knowledge are varies including knowledge of city of residence. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between knowledge about city of residence with youth generation knowledge of COVID19 as this factor has not yet been studied before in Indonesia. We conducted an analytical cross-sectional with an online survey for youth generation across Surabaya to understand their knowledge concerning Surabaya and COVID19. A total of 57 participants were voluntarily enrolled in this study. The result data were analyzed statistically. There is significant positive correlation between participants’ knowledge of Surabaya city with knowledge of COVID19 (r= 0.314; p= 0.017). Furthermore, knowledge of COVID19 was significantly different between youth who have better knowledge of Surabaya than lower knowledge (p= 0.021). Knowledge of Surabaya city was correlated with knowledge of COVID19. Youth who have better knowledge regarding their city of residence seem to have better knowledge of COVID19. Knowledge concerning city of residence proven to be important in order to increase knowledge of COVID19 in youth generation.
