Resumen
In this study, a questionnaire translated from a national survey on physical activity of 2,002 U.S. adults (Morrow, Jackson. Bazzarre. Milne, & Blair, 1999) was adopted to survey a random sample of 812 Chinese adults through a city wide telephone interview. The respondents demonstrated poor awareness of the role of physical activity in disease prevention. Older adults possessed poorer knowledge of physical activity but higher activity levels than their younger counterparts did. Results indicated that the level and knowledge of physical activity of Chinese adults are related to age. The perceived importance of physical activity was the lowest among other health behaviors. Age, educational level, and knowledge of appropriate exercise prescription to achieve health benefits were factors used to discriminate among sedentary, somewhat active, and physically active groups. The importance of intervention programs to raise the physical activity level and knowledge of Chinese adults was demonstrated by this study.

Resumen
Reading is of paramount importance in the modern era. It is an invaluable tool to instill knowledge in people and lead them to sustainable development. This study aimed to investigate the shared responsibilities of stakeholders in promoting early literacy and reading culture in Rwanda. The study was conducted in five districts in Rwanda, one in each province, including the city of Kigali. This study is conducted within the framework of the Theory of Emergent Literacy (EL) pioneered by Marie Clay (1926–2007) (Rohde, 2015; Teale, 1986; Tracey and Morrow, 2006), according to which literacy development begins very early in life and children’s early reading and writing experiences are of considerable importance in their overall literacy development. The study applied a descriptive research design, which consists of collecting quantitative and qualitative data. The target population was 437,988, which was the total number of households in the five districts. It involved 598 parents in selected households, school administrators, and local authorities. A convenience sampling technique was used to select parents, while a purposive sampling technique was applied to select school administration and local authorities. A questionnaire, interviews, and observation were used as data collection tools. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The findings of the study revealed that parents carry out their responsibilities and interactions with children by cultivating a reading culture and reading stories to them before school age. Findings also showed that parents acknowledge teachers’ interactions with children through giving them take-home reading assignments. The strategies that are used to develop early literacy and reading culture include showing pictures, using games and songs, and devoting some hours to reading on specific days in a week. The study identified challenges including parents’ illiteracy and poverty preventing them from being involved in their children’s education, the lack of enough books in schools, and overcrowded classes. It is recommended that government support be increased by making reading materials more accessible to children; that parents’ role in developing the reading culture and early literacy should be more visible; and that there is a need for adult literacy education to enable parents to read to their children and monitor their reading practice.

Resumen
In the global knowledge economy, knowledge-intensive industries and knowledge workers are extensively seen as the primary factors to improve the welfare and competitiveness of cities. To attract and retain such industries and workers, cities produce knowledge-based urban development strategies, where such strategising is an important development mechanism for cities and their economies. This paper investigates knowledge-based urban development strategies of Brisbane, Australia that support generation, attraction, and retention of investment and talent. The paper puts forward a clear understanding on the policy frameworks, and relevant applications of Brisbane’s knowledge-based urban development experience in becoming a prosperous knowledge city, and concludes by providing invaluable insights and directions for other cities seeking knowledge-based urban development.

In Africa, despite abundant natural resources and a young, creative population, the continent continues to struggle to spark sustainable growth. The scars left by decades of colonization, compounded by internal conflicts, still hinder the much-anticipated takeoff. International aid and poverty alleviation programs have yet to deeply transform the economic foundations of the continent. However, the advent of new technologies offers Africa a unique opportunity to make a qualitative leap by focusing on the knowledge economy. To achieve this transition, it is essential to create "knowledge territories", spaces conducive to innovation. This thesis explores the continent's capacity to adopt this model, using Morocco as a case study, which could inspire other African nations toward sustainable development based on knowledge. It deeply examines the concepts of the knowledge economy and "knowledge cities," evaluating their potential to catalyze a radical transformation of the African continent into a true hub of innovation and knowledge

Seutlwadi, Lebogang. "Adolescents' knowledge about abortion and emergency contraception a survey study". Thesis, Rhodes University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002561.

Texto completo
Resumen
Adolescents have become focal points of discussions and debates regarding sexuality and reproductive health matters. However, little research has been done particularly in South Africa to examine their knowledge concerning abortion and emergency contraception. Research indicates that a substantial proportion of adolescent pregnancies are unintended or unwanted. Abortion and emergency contraception are both time-sensitive services. Thus having accurate and comprehensive knowledge about both abortion and emergency contraception is pivotal, in the case of unintended or unwanted pregnancy or when engaging in unprotected sex or experiencing contraceptive failure that could lead to pregnancy. The 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) defined reproductive health rights for both men and women as the right to "decide freely and responsibly the number, spacing and timing of their children and to have the information and means to do so" (p. 60). That is, men and women should "have the right to make decisions concerning their reproduction free of discrimination, violence and coercion" (ICPD, 1994, p.60). Based on these definitions, it is rather evident that comprehensive and accurate knowledge are at the core of one's ability to make an informed consent. This is confirmed by Adler's (1992, p. 289) definition of informed consent or choice "a) access to sufficient information b) understanding the information c) competence to evaluate potential consequences d) freedom to make a choice and e) the ability to make and express that choice". It is from this framework that this study emerged. The aim of this study was to examine adolescents' knowledge concerning abortion and emergency contraception. The participants were Grade 11 learners between the ages of 15-24 years from five different schools in the Buffalo City Municipality. A sample of 514 was achieved. Data were analysed using descriptive cross-tabulation, chi-square and qualitative methods where appropriate. The results revealed that most of the participants did not have sufficient accurate knowledge concerning the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act, consequences of legal abortion and emergency contraceptive pills to make informed decisions. Furthermore, data also revealed that the participants' schools playa role in their sexual activity, their knowledge about the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act and about emergency contraceptive pills. Although this method made it feasible for the researcher to make general assumptions, non-responses were one of the limitations of the study. Similar research in various municipalities/cities in and outside the Eastern Cape is recommended so as to increase further awareness concerning the level of knowledge that adolescents have about contraceptive pills particularly emergency contraceptive pills, the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act and abortion in general.

Resumen
Thesis (MPhil-)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Innovation can be defined as a process whereby radical and incremental changes in thinking, in a process and in services lead to novel processes, products and services on a global scale. The nature of this “process” distinguishes it from similar processes concerning development and competitiveness with which it is often confused. Given their unique characteristics and challenges, cities are often the ideal and most likely sites for innovation in a globalised world. In the past, cities were mainly tasked with managing the affairs of their citizens. However, modern-day cities often find themselves facing more significant challenges, such as competing with other cities for investment, knowledge and tourists. In addition, cities in the 21st century are challenged to develop city cultures that are conducive to a knowledge-based economy and lifestyle. Against this background, the purpose of this thesis was to determine the relationship between innovation and cities in a knowledge-based economy (chapter 1). The chosen research methodology entailed critically analysing core concepts, namely cities (chapter 2), innovation (chapter 3), and the relationship between cities and innovation in the knowledge economy (chapter 4). Based on this, the researcher proceeded to postulate recommendations and suggestions for policies of innovation in cities (chapter 5). In so doing, the foundation was laid for the future development of a policy regarding innovation in developing cities (chapter 6).

"The role of geographic knowledge in sub-city level geolocation algorithms". Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Genova, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11567/941686.

Texto completo
Resumen
Geolocation of microblog messages has been largely investigated in the lit- erature. Many solutions have been proposed that achieve good results at the city-level. Existing approaches are mainly data-driven (i.e., they rely on a training phase). However, the development of algorithms for geolocation at sub-city level is still an open problem also due to the absence of good training datasets. In this thesis, we investigate the role that external geographic know- ledge can play in geolocation approaches. We show how di)erent geographical data sources can be combined with a semantic layer to achieve reasonably accurate sub-city level geolocation. Moreover, we propose a knowledge-based method, called Sherloc, to accurately geolocate messages at sub-city level, by exploiting the presence in the message of toponyms possibly referring to the speci*c places in the target geographical area. Sherloc exploits the semantics associated with toponyms contained in gazetteers and embeds them into a metric space that captures the semantic distance among them. This allows toponyms to be represented as points and indexed by a spatial access method, allowing us to identify the semantically closest terms to a microblog message, that also form a cluster with respect to their spatial locations. In contrast to state-of-the-art methods, Sherloc requires no prior training, it is not limited to geolocating on a *xed spatial grid and it experimentally demonstrated its ability to infer the location at sub-city level with higher accuracy.

Resumen
Knowledge Cities (KC) and Smart Cities (SC) have made significant investments with influence throughout the world in only four decades. This has occurred although these concepts are still being developed, being urgent to advance in their understanding. This article focuses on comparing these types of cities, seeking to understand their approaches, the fields of study in which they are developed and the lines of action in which they are projected. A mixed methodology is applied, qualitative to deepen the concepts and quantitative through the VOS viewer software, which is used to process more than two thousand articles indexed in Scopus. We found that the KC is formed around the notion of change of the productive matrix and develops issues related to its urban spatial and social conformation. While the SC concept is developed in the technological sciences, relating more to the use of the internet of things (IoT), big data, cloud computing, and its application in the city.

Turmena, Lucas, Aline Lusieux, Simone Sandholz, Flávia Guerra y Michael Roll. TUC City Profile: Recife, Brazil. United Nations University - Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), noviembre de 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.53324/rrep9173.

Texto completo
Resumen
Recife is a prominent front-runner for climate policymaking in Brazil, having formulated robust plans and strategies at the city scale. The next step is to overcome the gap between strategic planning and local action at the neighbourhood scale. Historically, urban development in Recife has been marked by social inequalities. To ensure social inclusion and justice in climate action, it is critical to open up governance structures to include bottom-up, community-based approaches and incentivize co-production of urban space between governmental and non-governmental actors. Climate action can build on opportunities to also tackle inequalities in Recife, prioritizing the most vulnerable communities. To support this goal, social indicators can be used next to traditional emissions data to assess how transformative climate action is in the city. The climate agenda should be mainstreamed into urban development in Recife, particularly in the context of upgrading informal and low-income settlements. Capacity development and awareness raising activities drawing on local expertise, knowledge and practices can facilitate that.

Resumen
Naucalpan shares critical sustainability challenges with Mexico City due to geographic proximity, notably those related to transport. Furthermore, deindustrialization, lack of integrated urban planning and climate change exacerbate everyday problems in the municipality, including air and water pollution, poor waste management, inequality and poverty. Better understanding the links between these issues could inspire transformative climate action at the local level. A strategic long-term vision for a more sustainable Naucalpan could build upon existing multilevel collaboration agreements and transnational partnerships. Vertical and horizontal integration and formalization of climate change mitigation and adaptation programs and projects could help the municipality to bridge fragmented climate agendas, sectoral development projects and short-term administrations. Naucalpan residents are increasingly recognizing socio-environmental challenges and conflicts at the local level, as well as the shortcomings of the institutionalized channels for citizen participation. As a result, different informal spaces for citizens to voice their opinions regarding government decisions and projects are emerging in the municipality. Addressing significant gaps in municipal data, knowledge and capacity regarding climate change is critical to accelerate a transformation towards sustainability in Naucalpan. Furthermore, existing community-led initiatives could be leveraged to anchor climate action and ensure buy-in from different actors.

Turmena, Lucas, Flávia Maia, Flávia Guerra y Michael Roll. TUC City Profile: Teresina, Brazil. United Nations University - Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), noviembre de 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.53324/eycc5652.

Resumen
Climate injustice is obvious in Teresina. Although the city makes a small contribution to national and global emissions, it is situated in a global warming hotspot. Teresina is already affected by extreme heat, and models anticipate that it will become even hotter and drier in the coming years. The city's high vulnerability to climate change particularly affects Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) groups living in low-income neighbourhoods. Social injustice and racism are tied together in the urban development process of Teresina. Flood-prone areas often overlap with vulnerable neighbourhoods at the fringes of the city, resulting in precarious living conditions. Climate action at the city level must simultaneously favour racial and climate justice to promote transformative changes towards sustainability. Teresina will likely have to absorb climate-induced migration from its surroundings, which may increase the challenges of already overloaded basic services and infrastructure. Urban planning in Teresina must accommodate future projections by combining climate mitigation with adaptation to provide low-carbon and resilient development. Urban climate governance is still emerging in Teresina, which makes this a key moment for transformative action towards sustainability. Entry points for transformation in the city include: promoting vertical and horizontal coordination to implement the climate agenda; increasing climate-related technical knowledge within the municipal government and awareness at the community level; fostering collaboration to generate and disseminate municipal climate data and amplify bottom-up climate initiatives; creating new climate narratives; strengthening citizen participation while recognizing and including vulnerable groups; declaring a climate emergency; and leveraging additional public and private funds for climate action.

Resumen
This discussion paper was developed by the Inter-American Development Bank’s (IDB) Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Division in collaboration with the Knowledge, Innovation and Communication Department (KIC). It was financed through the Cutting-Edge Knowledge Fund. Smart cities reveal the potential of innovative technologies to tackle tough and longstanding problems in cities and dramatically improve the way municipalities operate. Cities in Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries have a pressing need for solutions that can challenge existing problems while providing a solid return on investment. In recent years, Israel has developed a unique ecosystem approach toward its smart city technology, with a unique focus on collaboration between research institutes, local governments, and private entrepreneurs. This paper explains how the ecosystem developed and how it can benefit cities and residents. The paper starts by providing background information on the various drivers behind smart city innovation in Israel, including the information industry and government agencies. It then focuses on technologies developed in Israel, providing descriptions and a comprehensive analysis of cutting-edge solutions for smart cities developed by an ecosystem of companies, universities, governments, and startups. Later on, provides an overview of the research and development centers in Israel and the dynamics that fuel creative centers, focusing on the startup ecosystem, academic centers, and established IT companies.

Hogan, Eileen y Becci Jeffers. A sense of freedom: Exploring everyday experiences of cycling in an Irish regional city. Institute for Social Science in the 21st Century, University College Cork, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.33178/10468/15138.

Resumen
In current policy and planning discourse, there is great interest in reimagining and redesigning cities as more cycling-friendly spaces. Research shows that good cycling infrastructure is the first step to increasing cycling rates. However, social and cultural factors are also important for understanding the attractions of cycling and barriers to cycling but these tend to be under-explored in transport policy and research. In partnership with the Cork Environmental Forum and the Cork Cycling Campaign, this study set out to develop social scientific knowledge about cycling as a social practice, focusing on Cork as a case study of an Irish regional city, with a view to informing pro-cycling policy.

Casey, Meghan, Danielle Wagstaff, Joanne Porter y Rochelle Eime. Improving women’s physical activity in the City of Casey: Breaking down barriers using co-design and participatory research. Evaluation Report to the City of Casey, March 2024. Federation University, septiembre de 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.35843/ccbdber24.

Texto completo
Resumen
This research project actively engaged women to design physical activity programs in the City of Casey and provided knowledge to inform council decision-making and investment in community physical activity. Initally, four workshops were conducted with women (n=76) from culturally diverse backgrounds in the City of Casey to investigate the barriers they faced participating in physical activity and they co-designed solutions to improve participation. These women were also invited to complete a survey on their demographics, health, physical activity and barriers, to inform the design of physical activity programs (n=46 completed surveys). Following this, the Active Communities team at the City of Casey developed and facilitated the delivery of physical activity programs that would meet women’s interests and needs. This report is the second and final report to the City of Casey and summarises the evaluation findings from the co-design physical activity programs delivered in the City of Casey for adult women. A total of 21 women completed surveys (38% response rate) at two-time points: (1) after workshops and (2) 9 months later. A further three women participated in in-depth interviews about their lived experiences of attempting to overcome barriers to being physically active and taking part in the newly designed physical activities. Two council staff participated in an interview discussion to identify the scope of co-designed physical activity programs and the challenges and successes of undertaking a codesign approach.

Hammack, E. y Morgan Johnston. Three-dimensional numerical model study of flow near a scour hole in Isle of Wight Bay near Ocean City, Maryland. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), abril de 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/43921.

Texto completo
Resumen
A scour hole has developed in Isle of Wight Bay near Ocean City, MD. This hole could grow to the point that nearby land developments are threatened, so channel-bed protection measures may be implemented near this scour hole. Appropriately designing those bed protection measures requires knowledge of the flow behavior in the scour hole, so a three-dimensional model study has been conducted to determine the flow behavior at the extreme flood and ebb tides present during a pre-selected month of tide cycles. Steady-state simulations of the flows during those two tide conditions have been completed. Contour plots of the flow velocity near the bed and the corresponding bed shear stresses are provided as input for the design of the bed protection measures.
