Resumen
In the late 50’s or early 60’s, there were huge interests towards building learning systems for individual learning and they are called with various names such as Intelligent Tutoring System, Microworld, Computer Based Training, Computer Aided System, Intelligent Computer Aided Instruction and others. They are made to be different with regard to the technological approaches and the learning pedagogies, knowledge models and student models. Over the years, the interest of building learning systems has migrated from individual learning on content knowledge to community learning as the result of the recent Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 sociotechnological wave. The paper describes the work that was done to develop the learning system in both situations – content knowledge and social knowledge where the experiences mainly in capturing the knowledge and representing them are different

Resumen
Purpose: No matter how superior the techniques employed are, it’s only through positive attitudes of teachers that the benefits of computer integration into the curriculum instruction could be realized. The overall objective of this study was to examine influence of computer aided learning for teacher and students in promoting assimilation of knowledge. Methodology: The paper used a desk study review methodology where relevant empirical literature was reviewed to identify main themes and to extract knowledge gaps. Findings: The study concluded that all the teachers and majority of the students (93.2%) disagreed to the statement that they had never used a computer and that they were not interested. Based on teachers’ perceptions towards the use of computer aided learning all the teachers’ strongly disagreed to the statement that computers scare them. Analysis of results showed that the teachers had a positive attitude towards computer aided learning. They therefore agreed that they believed computers were important teaching tool. The study also concluded that he school boards of management were partly involved in the training of teachers on computer aided learning and that the ministry of education also organized training courses for teachers on computer aided learning. Unique Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: The study suggests that parents associations (PA) in schools should develop a PA fund and organize equipping schools with more computers and other computer aided learning resources in order to make teaching and learning using computer aided learning easier. The current study suggests that there is need to organize in-service training for teachers in order to equip them with expertise skills and knowledge and build their confidence with ICT tools.

Resumen
The objective of this paper is to analyze and describe computer-aided design training and its aspects. A traditional and technology-supported learning process is described with the purpose of analyzing computer-aided design training and provision of knowledge assessment, and identifying problems in the CAD system training. The article analyzes the learning process by defining its objectives, the necessity of student characterization, motivation analysis, the necessity of feedback and other basic components; it analyzes the training methods, provides insight into technology-supported learning process, identifies the provision and types of computer-aided design training and knowledge assessment as well as describes feedback and its role in the training process.Elaboration of an intellectual learning system would solve the problems associated with lack of feedback, lack of adaptivity and the emergence of plagiarism (since only the end result of the design is subjected to the test and not the whole process of creating it, it is easy to pass another’s work for one’s own). A solution to these problems would facilitate the work of the teacher and improve student learning outcomes.

Resumen
Evolution in computer and other information communication technologies have made also possibilities to develop intelligente computer-aided learning tools for enhanced learning. Today, most researchers in the field of educational technology seem to be preoccupied with either heuristic, the development of Artificial Intelligence application, or the epistemology, philosophy concerned with the nature and scope (limitations) of knowledge and representation or varius learning theories such as constructivism and conectionism by computer program. The enthusiasm to develop technologicall advanced learning tools resulted in technologies with limited application. The need to develop simple computer-based tools to assist instruction and demonstrate its impressiveness to enhance learning is most important, but those tools desperetly need to be designed with epistemological (didactical) knowledge and integrated into a pedagogical framework. The paper presents researc connected with the design and use of an interactive computer-aided learning tool for enhanced learning and the impact of an interactive computer-aided e-learning tool on students learning achievement. The study was motivated by the need to evaluate the use and effectiveness of computer-aided learning applications as they are used in the instructional environment. The mayor research questions that guided this study are: Does the e-learning tool have a measurable effect on students learning? And what is the impact of the e-learning tool usage on students’ performance? The results of the study proof the impact of usage e-learning tools on students’ performance at knowledge assessment. While using the prepared e-learning tool, the score and the time of complete interactive session were measured. Key words: education, ICT, intelligente learning tools.

Resumen
Basic life support (BLS) knowledge is a necessity for nursing students, as they have to deal with cardiac arrest events during their professional career. Existing studies indicate poor BLS knowledge among health science students, including nursing students. Learning BLS requires an understanding of basic sciences, such as anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry, subjects perceived to be difficult, resulting in misconceptions. Hence, a multimedia-aided instruction on BLS, supplemented with cooperating learning groups, was developed to assist nursing students in gaining correct BLS knowledge. A pretest-posttest designed for single cooperating groups was employed to evaluate students’ achievements. Sixty-five undergraduate nursing students took the pretest and posttest that consisted of 10 open-ended questions, each designed to evaluate an aspect of their BLS knowledge. The results show significantly more students (60 vs. 20%) answered more questions correctly on the posttest compared with the pretest ( P value <0.05, Wilcoxon signed-rank test). Thus the multimedia-aided instruction package enhanced undergraduate nursing students’ understanding of BLS and also assisted to generate a positive perception of multimedia-aided instructions, supplemented with a cooperating learning group.

Resumen
Translation tools are commonly used for translating a text written in one language (source language) into another language (target language). They are used to help translators in translating big numbers of translation works in effective time. There are three types of translation tools being studied in the article entitled Machine Translation Tools: Tools of the Translator’s Trade written by Peter Katsberg published in 2012. They are Fully Automated Machine Translation (or FAMT), Human Aided Machine Translation (or HAMT) and Machine Aided Human Translation (or MAHT). Katsberg analyzed how each translation tool works, the naturality and approriateness of its translation and the compatibility of using it. In this digital era, translation tools are not only popular among translators but also among EFL learners. Beginning with the use of portable dictionary such as Alfalink and expanding to the more sopisticated translation tool such as Google Translate. Some novice learners usually use this translation tools in doing their task without recorrecting the translation result. This happens perhaps because they do not have enough background knowledge to evaluate the translation result. Thus, it will be better when the learners have good mastery in basic English and train them to be aware in evaluating the result from translation tools. On the other words, Human Aided Machine Translation may be the wise choice to do translation task effectively and efficiently particularly in managing the time.

Resumen
This paper reports pedagogical experiences and educational techniques in the field of Mechanics of Structures (Mechanical Engineering degree), resorting to computational tools. Several aspects are addressed, covering CAD (Computer-Aided Design) modelling systems to CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering) solutions, in terms of analysis and validation of mechanical resistance calculations. Therefore, structural mechanics fundamental concepts and mechanics of materials are also addressed. Particular focus is given on the development of curricula components related to Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing. Doing so, three-dimensional structural modelling is applied to study the behaviour in selected simple case-studies where an external load is applied and the corresponding deflections are evaluated. Then, analytical and numerical analyses are performed and compared. During classes, patent aversion to solve analytical problems was clearly observed on the part of the students once calculus knowledge was required. The typical trend in engineering students, skipping the manual analytical methodology to solve a problem in order to go straight to numerical simulations via commercial Finite Element (FE) codes, was observed. The main focus of this work is, therefore, to determine the pedagogical effects of allying the analytical procedures and virtual simulators. It was possible to confirm the beneficial aspects of such methodology, considering that the regular engineering student has already a scientific basis on calculus and analytical process. Such knowledge will support mechanical project decisions, from model development to the analysis, and a sounding background to perform criticism of the results provided by the software.

Rose and Wolfe (2000) demonstrated that decision aid design is critical to learning from decision aids, and aids that produce less cognitive load result in superior learning by aid users compared to aids that produce more cognitive load. The current research investigates whether a tax decision aid has differential affects on the knowledge acquisition of accounting students with varying perceived aptitudes for tax and interest in tax as a career. Results indicate that participants with more interest in and perceived aptitude for tax acquire more tax-related knowledge during manual task completion than participants with less perceived aptitude and interest. Similar to prior research, decision aids generally decrease learning relative to unaided environments. When decision aids do not produce a heavy cognitive load, however, participants with less perceived aptitude for and interest in tax learn as much in aided environments as they learn in unaided environments.

Resumen
Countless stories are told about local heritage sites. Because these stories are one-of-a-kind, they present a significant challenge to students' knowledge and awareness of their cultural background. Furthermore, literature is scarce on students' historical and architectural knowledge of local cultural heritage places. This study determined the level of local cultural heritage sites knowledge of sixty (60) students through school on wheels and multimedia-aided instructions. The study made use of a duly-validated researcher-made Local Cultural Heritage Sites Questionnaire. Frequency count, mean, and standard deviation were the descriptive statistics used while t-test was used for inferential statistics set at 0.05 level of significance using the Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. The results revealed that the level of students' historical and architectural knowledge of local cultural heritage sites was "moderate" and shifted to "high" when school on wheels and multimedia-aided instructions were introduced. There were significant differences in the historical and architectural knowledge of the students on local cultural heritage sites. Students' knowledge is improved via teaching and learning activities that give experiential and meaningful learning. Increased local cultural heritage knowledge of students is a step forward in promoting cultural heritage conservation and preservation.

So, the objectives of the research are to find out: (1) the influence of the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) Approach aided by Microsoft Mathematics software on students' mathematical communication ability (MCA), (2) an interaction between IMK and RME approach to mathematical communication ability, (3) the students' completion process in solving mathematical communication problems. The third objective is very important because it can reveal whether horizontal and vertical mathematization as the ideas of RME benefit the students. The results of the research show that: (1) there is a significant effect of the RME Approach aided by Mathematics software on students' mathematical communication ability, (2) there is no significant interaction between the initial mathematical knowledge and the learning approach to students' mathematical communication ability, (3) the students' completion process in solving mathematical communication problems attain the "good" category.

Resumen
To solve the problem of how to apply information technology in English education field, to realize the integration of information technology and courses and also to truly improve the study efficiency, the advanced technologies were combined with some education measurement theories and applied in computer-aided test field. In addition, a computer-aided autonomous learning system with adaptive feature was developed, which was a self-adaptive learning system of junior English. The results showed that, under the guidance of the classic test theory and the project response theory, the system was designed and developed on the basis of the “people-oriented” principle. With the increasing number of students wanting to practice, the system dynamically rewrote the relevant learning record parameters, and conducted a real-time record of the true level of ability of each different student in different knowledge points. In a word, practicing according to the actual situation, the learning system can help achieve a truly personalized learning, and meanwhile enhances the efficiency of learning.

Resumen
AbstractGiven the recent successes of Deep Learning in AI there has been increased interest in the role and need for explanations in machine learned theories. A distinct notion in this context is that of Michie’s definition of ultra-strong machine learning (USML). USML is demonstrated by a measurable increase in human performance of a task following provision to the human of a symbolic machine learned theory for task performance. A recent paper demonstrates the beneficial effect of a machine learned logic theory for a classification task, yet no existing work to our knowledge has examined the potential harmfulness of machine’s involvement for human comprehension during learning. This paper investigates the explanatory effects of a machine learned theory in the context of simple two person games and proposes a framework for identifying the harmfulness of machine explanations based on the Cognitive Science literature. The approach involves a cognitive window consisting of two quantifiable bounds and it is supported by empirical evidence collected from human trials. Our quantitative and qualitative results indicate that human learning aided by a symbolic machine learned theory which satisfies a cognitive window has achieved significantly higher performance than human self learning. Results also demonstrate that human learning aided by a symbolic machine learned theory that fails to satisfy this window leads to significantly worse performance than unaided human learning.

Resumen
Data driven based approaches to signal processing including deep neural networks (DNN) have shown promise in various fields. Such techniques tend to require significant training for good convergence. Model-based approaches, however, provide practical solutions often with insightful and intuitive interpretations. A hybrid approach that employs data driven techniques aided by knowledge from model-based approaches may help reduce required training and improve convergence rates. This work investigates the potential of deep learning techniques to detect targets while accelerating the learning process via use of expert/domain knowledge for the channel matrix based cognitive radar/sonar framework. The channel matrices characterize responses from target and clutter/reverberation. We will leverage our previous work [Ali et al. (2021); (2022)] on model-based adaptive detection approaches for cognitive radar/sonar. We compare the detection performance of model aided deep learning-based algorithms with that of traditional model-based techniques using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves from Monte Carlo simulations. We also study and compare the robustness of these techniques by changing the signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR), the number of targets and clutter sources, and the amount of available training data. The effects of choice of hyperparameters and loss functions are also studied.

Abstract Modern technologies have changed the landscape of teaching and learning in many ways, including introduction of computational support for knowledge assessment. Concept maps (CMs) can be used to externalise student’s internal knowledge structure in a form suitable for computer-aided assessment. Current CM-based knowledge assessment systems do not analyse semantics of CM elements. The paper represents a study designed to find out how big is the portion of a CM that is left unevaluated in default of semantic analysis.

Resumen
Flight control is a key system of modern aircraft. During each flight, pilots use flight control to control the forces of flight and also the aircraft’s direction and attitude. Whether flight control can work properly is closely related to safety such that daily maintenance is an essential task of airlines. Flight control maintenance heavily relies on expert knowledge. To facilitate knowledge achievement, aircraft manufacturers and airlines normally provide structural manuals for consulting. On the other hand, computer-aided maintenance systems are adopted for improving daily maintenance efficiency. However, we find that grass-roots engineers of airlines still inevitably consult unstructured technical manuals from time to time, for example, when meeting an unusual problem or an unfamiliar type of aircraft. Achieving effective knowledge from unstructured data is inefficient and inconvenient. Aiming at the problem, we propose a knowledge-graph-based maintenance prototype system as a complementary solution. The knowledge graph we built is dedicated for unstructured manuals referring to flight control. We first build ontology to represent key concepts and relation types and then perform entity-relation extraction adopting a pipeline paradigm with natural language processing techniques. To fully utilize domain-specific features, we present a hybrid method consisting of dedicated rules and a machine learning model for entity recognition. As for relation extraction, we leverage a two-stage Bi-LSTM (bi-directional long short-term memory networks) based method to improve the extraction precision by solving a sample imbalanced problem. We conduct comprehensive experiments to study the technical feasibility on real manuals from airlines. The average precision of entity recognition reaches 85%, and the average precision of relation extraction comes to 61%. Finally, we design a flight control maintenance prototype system based on the knowledge graph constructed and a graph database Neo4j. The prototype system takes alarm messages represented in natural language as the input and returns maintenance suggestions to serve grass-roots engineers.

Resumen
Network structure learning algorithms have aided network discovery in fields such as bioinformatics, neuroscience, ecology and social science. However, challenges remain in learning informative networks for related sets of tasks because the search space of Bayesian network structures is characterized by large basins of approximately equivalent solutions. Multitask algorithms select a set of networks that are near each other in the search space, rather than a score-equivalent set of networks chosen from independent regions of the space. This selection preference allows a domain expert to see only differences supported by the data. However, the usefulness of these algorithms for scientific datasets is limited because existing algorithms naively assume that all pairs of tasks are equally related. We introduce a framework that relaxes this assumption by incorporating domain knowledge about task-relatedness into the learning objective. Using our framework, we introduce the first multitask Bayesian network algorithm that leverages domain knowledge about the relatedness of tasks. We use our algorithm to explore the effect of task-relatedness on network discovery and show that our algorithm learns networks that are closer to ground truth than naive algorithms and that our algorithm discovers patterns that are interesting.

This paper explores how Peer-to-Peer learning can level-up students' understanding of computer-aided design (CAD) with Autodesk Auto- CAD programme for Interior Design Year 1 students. As students come from different knowledge backgrounds, they approach the module with different understanding levels, with the weaker students unable to follow the live demonstration tutorials. A peer tutoring assignment using a student-led peer-to-peer learning pedagogy, was introduced to advance students' understanding and internalise content better by reinforcing their learning. Each group has an equal proportion of students with different levels of knowledge and capabilities, and each group member conducted self-research on a topic segment, shared their knowledge and findings within their group, and thereafter curated a 15-minute lecture and facilitation workshop for peers. Tutors provided consultation and mediation, encouraging students’ participation. The assignment’s results showed that the peer-to-peer learning approach efficaciously empowered students and motivated learning, enabling them to be self-directed learners.

Resumen
Abstract. The application of machine learning (ML) techniques in various fields of science has increased rapidly, especially in the last 10 years. The increasing availability of soil data that can be efficiently acquired remotely and proximally, and freely available open-source algorithms, have led to an accelerated adoption of ML techniques to analyse soil data. Given the large number of publications, it is an impossible task to manually review all papers on the application of ML in soil science without narrowing down a narrative of ML application in a specific research question. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the application of ML techniques in soil science aided by a ML algorithm (latent Dirichlet allocation) to find patterns in a large collection of text corpora. The objective is to gain insight into publications of ML applications in soil science and to discuss the research gaps in this topic. We found that (a) there is an increasing usage of ML methods in soil sciences, mostly concentrated in developed countries, (b) the reviewed publications can be grouped into 12 topics, namely remote sensing, soil organic carbon, water, contamination, methods (ensembles), erosion and parent material, methods (NN, neural networks, SVM, support vector machines), spectroscopy, modelling (classes), crops, physical, and modelling (continuous), and (c) advanced ML methods usually perform better than simpler approaches thanks to their capability to capture non-linear relationships. From these findings, we found research gaps, in particular, about the precautions that should be taken (parsimony) to avoid overfitting, and that the interpretability of the ML models is an important aspect to consider when applying advanced ML methods in order to improve our knowledge and understanding of soil. We foresee that a large number of studies will focus on the latter topic.

Retrieval of information has substantially changed within the last two decades. Naturally, this has also affected learning/teaching techniques, and methods that are commonly referred to as “e-learning” have become an important part in modern education. Institutions have to decide if (and how) to implement this new form of teaching but face the problem that little subject-specific research has been published for different teaching modes and methods. The present study compares a course module of the physiology laboratory course for medical students in the preclinical phase before and after the introduction of computer-aided course instructions (CACI). Students were provided with an online questionnaire containing Likert items evaluating workspace redesign, acceptance of course instructions, incentive to actively participate in the course, and subjective gain of knowledge. CACI was clearly preferred over the previously used paper workbook. However, the questionnaire also revealed that the gain in knowledge, as subjectively perceived by the students, had not improved, which is in agreement with several studies that neglected a beneficial effect of e-learning on learning success. We conclude that the CACI meet today's student's expectations and that introducing this system seems justified from this perspective.

Is there an interface between explicit and implicit knowledge in L2 acquisition? Rick de Graaff's doctoral dissertation tests this question in an experimental study from a weak interface position. This position indicates that explicit knowledge has a facilitative role in the acquisition of implicit knowledge when it engages the attention of learners and makes them notice input features (Schmidt, 1990). De Graaff studies the effect of explicit computer-aided self-instruction on the acquisition of morphosyntax in Experanto (an artificial language, based on Zamenhoff's Esperanto) and Spanish (as a foreign language) by adult native speakers of Dutch. Acquisition is tested in interaction with five intervening factors that constitute a controlled linguistic, psychological, and pedagogic context (i.e., complexity of structures, rule-based learning in syntax and exemplar-based learning in morphology, familiarity with the structures, availability of explicit knowledge, and learners' aptitude). Experanto is chosen to control for the influence of previous knowledge and contact outside class, and Spanish is chosen to make the results more generalizable.

Human infants are altricial, born relatively helpless and dependent on parental care for an extended period of time. This protracted time to maturity is typically regarded as a necessary epiphenomenon of evolving and developing large brains. We argue that extended altriciality is itself adaptive, as a prolonged necessity for parental care allows extensive social learning to take place. Human adults possess a suite of complex social skills, such as language, empathy, morality, and theory of mind. Rather than requiring hardwired, innate knowledge of social abilities, evolution has outsourced the necessary information to parents. Critical information for species-typical development, such as species recognition, may originate from adults rather than from genes, aided by underlying perceptual biases for attending to social stimuli and capacities for statistical learning of social actions. We draw on extensive comparative findings to illustrate that, across species, altriciality functions as an adaptation for social learning from caregivers.

Tuberculosis (TB) and pneumonia, including pneumonia from SARS-CoV-2 infection, are among the main causes of lower respiratory infections, which are the fourth cause of death worldwide. Recently, the World Health Organization recommended the use of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) software as a tool to analyze chest radiographs (CXR) for TB screening and triage. Most CAD developed to date aim to screen exclusively for TB. This work applies the lifelong machine learning paradigm to detect both pneumonia and TB through CXRs and evaluate the models’ ability to retain and acquire knowledge. Two well-known lifelong learning models, the Efficient Lifelong Learning Algorithm (ELLA) and Learning without Forgetting (LwF), were applied to two public CXR datasets containing TB and pneumonia samples together with healthy CXR samples. Pneumonia detection was learned first and TB detection was learned as second task. The SP index, a function of sensitivity and specificity, was used to evaluate the models. We concluded that both algorithms were able to retain knowledge about pneumonia detection and were also able to learn TB detection.

Abstract This article explores learning among rapidly internationalizing small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and how this supports the post-internationalization growth and survival of these firms. We utilize a qualitative multiple case study approach of ten information and communication technology (ICT) SMEs from a key emerging market—India. Findings suggest that during the post-entry stage, rapidly internationalizing SMEs use a wide range of internal and external sources of knowledge. External sources of knowledge include peer networks, associations in the same industry, international clients/partners, and international connections developed through trade fairs and trade missions. Internal sources of knowledge such as self-learning, especially from trial-and-error and experiential efforts, were found to enhance product, market and technological knowledge; and consequently aided geographic and product diversification. The findings also indicate that firms use a mix of integrated, vicarious, congenital and experiential learning approaches in their post-entry growth and survival phases. Experiential and congenital learning were found to be facilitated by firms’ internal network sources, whereas external network sources provide an ideal platform for vicarious learning. The study provides new insights into networking and learning by providing evidence that exposure to and connection with diverse types of networks can result in various forms of valuable learning for rapidly internationalizing SMEs, which enhances their post-entry growth.

GeoGebra is an interactive geometry, algebra, statistics, and calculus application designed for teaching and learning math, science, and engineering. Its dynamic interface allows its users to accurately and interactively visualize their work, models, and results. GeoGebra employs the synthesis of three key features: modeling, visualization, and programming (MVP). Many studies have shown the positive effects of GeoGebra on the efficiency and effectiveness of learning and teaching topics related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. In this study, we discuss how GeoGebra provides an environment for learning that is very interactive and collaborative between the learner and the instructor. We also show how integrating GeoGebra into the learning scheme can help improve the skills and knowledge of school and university students in numerous advanced mathematical courses, such as calculus, mathematical statistics, linear algebra, linear programming, computer-aided design, computer-aided geometric design, analytic and projective geometry, and graphical representation. Therefore, this study shows the effectiveness of GeoGebra and its MVP key features in science and engineering, particularly in topics related to mathematics. Each key feature of GeoGebra is thoroughly analyzed, and further analyses, along with how GeoGebra can be helpful in different topics, are discussed.

The implementation of computers in chemistry education since 1960 is described. Computers can be applied effectively to redress weaknesses in the basic scientific knowledge of students, as well as to augment their practical experience of chemical processes. Often the description or the explanation of chemical processes relies on mathematical and physical models that are three dimensional and dynamic and that can be presented elegantly with digitized images on computer. Current demands on lecturers and students, as well as didactic applications of computers in tertiary teaching are briefly described under the following headings: computer literacy, subject or task specific applications, computer aided testing, computer aided learning, interactive multimedia, the use of electronic media for lecture presentations, Internet, and mass education.

The classroom learning environment facilitates human tutors to interact with every learner and get the opportunity to understand the learner’s psychology and then provide learning material (access learner prior knowledge and well align the learning material as per learner requirement) to them accordingly. Implementing this cognitive intelligence in intelligent tutoring system is quite tricky. This research has focused on mimicking human tutor cognitive intelligence in the computer-aided system of offering an exclusive curriculum to the learners. The prime focus of this research article is to evaluate the proposed SeisTutor using Kirkpatrick’s four-phase evaluation model. Experimental results depicting the enhanced learning gain through intelligence incorporated SeisTutor as against the intelligence absence are demonstrated.
