Wotton, Debra Mary. "Consequences of dispersal failure: kereru and large seeds in New Zealand". Thesis, University of Canterbury. Biological Sciences, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/2509.

Texto completo
Resumen
The decline of kereru (Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae) may limit dispersal of large-seeded plants in New Zealand, but the consequences of this are unknown. I determined kereru disperser effectiveness by modelling seed dispersal distances (using seed retention times and movement patterns). Mean seed retention time was significantly longer for larger-seeded species, ranging from 37-181 minutes. Wild radiotracked kereru were sedentary, remaining at one location for up to 5.25 hours. The mean flight distance was 77 m and the maximum was 1, 457 m. Estimated mean seed dispersal distances for tawa (Beilschmiedia tawa), puriri (Vitex lucens), and fivefinger (Pseudopanax arboreus) were 95, 98, and 61 m respectively. Kereru dispersed 66-87% of ingested seeds away from the parent tree, with 79-88% of seeds dispersed <100 m and < 1% dispersed over 1,000 m. In a field seed-fate experiment, "pre-human" conditions (cleaned seeds, low density, away from parent, and protected from mammals) increased survival compared to "post-human" conditions (whole fruits, high density, under parent, not protected) for both taraire (Beilschmiedia tarairi; 15% vs. 2% survival to one year respectively) and karaka (Corynocarpus laevigatus; 60% vs. 11% to two years, respectively). Fruit diameter varied considerably within karaka, taraire, and tawa, although theoretically not enough for them to be swallowed by other birds. Nevertheless, other birds are reported to occasionally take fruits of nearly all large-seeded species. Small tawa seeds produced smaller seedlings in the glasshouse; therefore selection of only smaller seeds by alternative dispersers may negatively affect tawa recruitment. Kereru are generally not gape-limited, and fruit size preferences were independent of mean fruit size. Kereru provide effective dispersal by moving most seeds away from the parent, and enhancing seed and seedling survival. Therefore, both dispersal failure and introduced mammals negatively affect the regeneration of large-seeded trees in New Zealand.

Resumen
The Māori and Pākehā (non-Māori New Zealander-European descent) bicultural society in a rural community around Mount Maungatautari, New Zealand, seems to have overcome some significant culturally-embedded differences as exhibited in collaboration on a large-scale and complex conservation project that is community-based and driven, with minimal government control and funding. The emergence of this and other such community-initiated projects in New Zealand invites an examination to determine the socio-cultural factors associated with the emergence of such projects. A comparison of Hawaii’s state of community conservation is felt to highlight those key factors. Through the comparison, Polynesian and Western cultural-historical factors emerge as part of a suite of socio-cultural factors contributing to the New Zealand community’s cross-cultural communication and collaboration. Maori-Polynesian culture and values influence the present stage of collaboration with the elements of valuing differences, the maintenance of strong ties to land through tribal organization, tribal land recognition, ever-stronger culture and identity transmission, and a willingness to apply their own notion of tapu (sacred restriction or removal from the sphere of the profane) to suspend other cherished cultural traditions, allowing the regeneration of species in conjunction with community conservation. Pākehā culture in this project is derived from the re-visioning of New Zealand as a nation intended to be a bicultural society by both group’s ancestors in the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi and contemporary Waitangi tribunals, the cultivation of a “kiwi” identity that expresses multiple-generational ties and affection to land, and an increasing valuation of local biota and indigenous tikanga (ways of doing things) through local and international cross-cultural and environmental discourse.

Resumen
The present study is part of the Kaupapa Kereru Programme. The main aim of the programme is to increase the numbers and range of kereru (Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae) on Banks Peninsula. Home ranges, movements, diet and habitat use of 15 kereru captured in Hinewai Reserve, Banks Peninsula, were investigated from February 2005 to February 2006. Hinewai Reserve is the largest tract of regenerating native forest in a highly modified urban-rural landscape. Phenology of 11 plant species predicted to be key kereru foods, was studied to determine the pattern of food availability in Hinewai Reserve. Twelve radio-tagged kereru resided in the Hinewai Reserve study site (Otanerito Valley and Sleepy Bay) and three resided in Akaroa. Ripe fruit was available from January to August; the height of the fruiting season was in autumn. The bulk of new leaf growth occurred in spring and early summer although new leaves were available on broom and tree lucerne year round. Peak flowering occurred in spring. Kereru in Akaroa ate a total of 21 plant species; six of these species were native and 15 introduced. Kereru in the Hinewai Reserve study site ate a total of 26 plant species; 20 of these species were native and six introduced. Fruit was preferred when readily available. Native fruit appeared to be preferred over fruit of introduced species in Akaroa, where both types were available. New foliage of introduced legumes and deciduous species appeared to be preferred over new foliage of native species at both sites during winter and spring. These species were important food sources prior to the breeding season and may be selected specifically for their nitrogen and protein content. Food is currently not a limiting factor for kereru survival or reproductive success. Considerable variation in the use and preference of vegetation types of individual kereru made it difficult to identify trends in habitat selection. Use and preference for many vegetation types was seasonal; this was certainly because of the availability of food species included in or close to these vegetation types. Overall, native vegetation communities were used more than communities dominated by introduced species and forest communities were used more than non-forest communities. Kanuka (Kunzea ericoides) was used most often for non-feeding activities and 67% of observed nests were built in kanuka. Annual home ranges and core areas in the Hinewai Reserve study site (mean of 15.9 and 2 ha respectively) were significantly larger than those found in Lyttelton Harbour, Banks Peninsula in previous research (mean of 8 and 0.08 ha respectively). Home ranges were larger when fruit was eaten, than when no fruit was eaten indicating that kereru are more sedentary when feeding on foliage. Kereru from the Hinewai Reserve study site made no excursions >5 km and no daily movements >2 km. Kereru from Akaroa and Sleepy Bay travelled into Otanerito Valley to feed on horopito in autumn, indicating that there may have been a lack of fruit in their local areas during autumn. No kereru in Otanerito Valley travelled outside of the valley. The distribution of high quality food sources is likely to have caused the observed differences in home range and core area size between localities. Kereru in Lyttelton Harbour may have been restricted to small patches of high quality resources in a study area consisting largely of unsuitable habitat. In Hinewai Reserve, high quality resources were spread over larger areas and were more uniformly distributed. The density of kereru was unknown at both study sites, and this confounded assessment of habitat quality. However, it is likely that the Hinewai Reserve study site would support a higher number of kereru. The main factor limiting population growth in the present study was failure of nests at the egg and chick stage. The fledge rate was 17%. Two of fifteen adult kereru died. Control of predators should be the first aspect of management that is focused on, and will almost certainly increase reproductive success of kereru and loss of breeding adults. As the population of kereru on Banks Peninsula increases due to predator control in existing kereru habitat, food may become a limiting factor. Habitat can be improved for kereru by planting a diverse range of plant species that provide food year-round. Native fruiting species are greatly recommended for habitat enhancement and should be selected so that fruit is available for as much of the year as possible. Native and introduced legumes should also be made available as foods for winter and spring. As most land on Banks Peninsula is privately owned, co-operation and enthusiasm of the community is critical for successful management. Information and support needs to be given to landowners wishing to enhance their properties for kereru.

Qiu, Huiyong. "Keroro Gunsô : carnivalization in Japanese anime". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/44501.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis explores the playful world of Keroro Gunsô, a manga-turned-anime comedy that is immensely popular in millennium Japan and starting to gain popularity on a global scale. Drawing from a parody of Japan’s military aggression during World War Two, the anime plays with the public memory about Japan’s imperial past and the binary opposition between war and peace, invader and the invaded, and ultimately, patriarchy and matriarchy. This paper will examine the text of Keroro Gunsô as a symbolic site of what Mikhail Bakhtin called “carnival,” a discursive space for renewal, festivity and laughter freed from ordinary social restrictions and conformity. I would argue that Keroro Gunsô offers a playful fantasy for Japan’s “post-postwar memory” (as Carol Gluck calls it) to deal with social anxieties associated with Japan’s imperial past and its tragic defeat in the war. I will start my argument by looking at the increasingly significant role of carnival/festival anime in today’s global culture. Then, after a brief reading of the story of Keroro Gunsô, I will locate its text in the framework of “carnival” to examine its carnivalesque features: the attack against historical facts through parody as well as the reversal of Japan’s patriarchal hierarchy through the mobilization of its symbolic characters. Finally, I will examine how Keroro Gunsô embraces/celebrates Japan’s playfully weak, irresponsible, and ultimately, emasculated identity as a response to the social anxieties surrounding Japan’s defeat in World War Two. Through the alternate reading of this incredibly popular comedy, this paper attempts to explore a different side of Japanese society encapsulated in this carnivalesque anime behind its humor and festival laughter.

Resumen
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Chemistry, 1998.

The infrared vibrational Kerr effect was investigated as a potentially selective and sensitive detection method for explosives. The investigation of the vibrational Kerr effect commenced with the first reported measurement of the integrated infrared vapor absorption strengths for the explosives trinitrotoluene, (TNT), cyclotrimethylene trinitramine (RDX), and pentaerythritrol tetranitrate (PETN). From the infrared absorption spectra, the characteristic N02 symmetric and asymmetric stretch bands of the explosives were identified as spectral targets for the vibrational Kerr effect. The vibrational Kerr spectra of fluoroform and nitromethane were successfully measured with conventional Kerr techniques. The vibrational Kerr measurements were first made on the CH stretch-bend combinations of fluoroform around 7000 cm7'. The remainder of the vibrational Kerr measurements were carried out on the N02 asymmetric stretch band of nitromethane at 15 84 nf '. Nitromethane was an ideal test molecule of the infrared measurement system because of its similarity to the eplosives and its large room temperature vapor pressure. Rotationally resolved Kerr spectra of nitromethane were recorded for segments of the asymmetric stretch band and the expected qualitative features of the Kerr spectra were observed. Although the sensitivity needed for the detection of explosives was not demonstrated, the selective detection of polar molecules over weakly polar molecules was demonstrated for a mixture of nitromethane and nitrogen dioxide. The methods investigated for measurement of the Kerr effect in both the infrared and ultraviolet spectral regions are described in detail. Polarization modulation of the light source with phase sensitive detection was expected to increase sensitivity to the Kerr effect over conventional Kerr techniques. Despite the anticipated sensitivity enhancement offered by polarization modulation, poor performance of the photoelastic modulators and the Fourier Transform spectrometer impeded the demonstration of the enhancement
by James A. Janni.

Resumen

In this thesis we calculate the Hawking mass numerically for surfaces in Kerr spacetime. The Hawking mass is a useful tool for proving the Penrose inequality and the result does not contradict the inequality. It also does not contradict the assumption that the Hawking mass should be monotonic for surfaces in Kerr spacetime. The Hawking mass is quasi-local and defined by the spin coefficents of Newman and Penrose, so first we give a discussion about quasi-local quantities and then a short description of the Newman-Penrose formalism.

Resumen
We exploit the near-horizon conformal symmetry of rapidly spinning black holes to determine universal properties of their magnetospheres. Analytic expressions are derived for the limiting form of the magnetosphere in the near-horizon region. The symmetry is shown to imply that the black hole Meissner effect holds for free Maxwell fields but is generically violated for force-free fields. We further show that in the extremal limit, near-horizon plasma particles are infinitely boosted relative to accretion flow. Active galactic nuclei powered by rapidly spinning black holes are therefore natural sites for high-energy particle collisions.

Resumen

Penrose's inequality which relates the total mass of a space-time containing a black hole with the area of the event horizon, is a yet unproven condition that is required for the cosmic censorship hypothesis. It is believed that the inequality could be proved by using properties of the Hawking mass. This thesis gives analytical expressions for the Hawking mass in slowly rotating Kerr and Kerr-Newman space-times. It is also shown that the expressions are monotonically increasing, a result that does not contradict Penrose's inequality.

Resumen
The wilderness debate has largely been polarized into two main factions: the environmentalists, including groups such as the Montana Wilderness Society, which favors land preservation, and industrial groups, such as the Montana Wood Products Association, which favors extractive activities on public land. The debate includes both philosophical and economic considerations. The philosophical debate centers around the ethically correct use of public land, while the economic debate focuses on which type of land use provides the highest level of economic well-being to the citizens in adjacent areas. Historically, both sides have claimed that their particular land-use alternative provides the highest level of economic well-being, while neither side has convincing evidence to support its claim. One of the more important aspects of the economic debate has focused on jobs and which alternative provides more of them. An additional concern is how each alternative affects the wage rate in adjacent areas. The primary goal of this investigation is to estimate the effect, if any, of wilderness designation on the wages in areas adjacent to wilderness.

This thesis examines postcards of Pacific peoples that were produced in Sydney by the photographic firm Kerry & Co. during the first decade of the twentieth century. Like other visual images and technologies of that period, postcards have played an important role in shaping contemporary understandings of indigenous peoples, and, despite created for commercial purposes, they also relate to the production of anthropological knowledge at the turn of the century. This study is divided into three parts. The first part is devoted to the socio-cultural and historical contexts in which the Kerry & Co. postcards are embedded. Particular attention will be given to the company‟s postcard sample book around which the discussion of the Kerry postcards body will revolve. The second part, focusing on the three Aboriginal series, is characterised by a microhistorical approach to a photographic encounter on Wailwan land, and by the consideration of „contact zones‟ for the understanding of the social dynamics in front of Kerry‟s camera. The focus of both chapters is on the excavation of the origins and identities of the nameless Aboriginal „postcard people‟, and on the identification of their agency during the shared moment of the postcard imagery‟s production. The third part of the thesis focuses on the Samoan series which, for the „recycled‟ nature of its twelve motifs, assumes an even more „exotic‟ role within Kerry‟s body of indigenous people. The headdress tuiga becomes a cultural marker for Samoa in Kerry‟s stereotyping apparatus, and the whole series can be considered as born as a metaphor – their motifs being stripped of personal meanings already before entering Kerry‟s factory. I argue that, focusing on postcards as material objects in their own right, discloses many aspects of the dynamic relationships between societies, and reveals how active they are in creating meanings about cultures.

Resumen
The scalar tensor theory of gravitation is constructed in D dimensions in all possible geometries of spacetime. In Riemannian geometry, theory of gravitation involves a spacetime metric g with a torsion-free, metric compatible connection structure. If the geometry is non-Riemannian, then the gauge theory of gravitation can be constructed with a spacetime metric g and a connection structure with torsion. In non-Riemannian theory, connections may be metric compatible or non-metric compatible. It is shown that theory of gravitation which involves non-metric compatible connection and torsion, can be rewritten in terms of torsion-free theory. It is also shown that scalar tensor theory can be reformulated in Einstein frame by applying a conformal transformation. By adding an antisymmetric axion field, the axi-dilaton theory is studied in Riemannian and non-Riemannian geometries. Motion of massive test particles is examined in all these geometries. The static, spherically symmetric and stationary, Kerr-type axially symmetric solutions of the scalar tensor and axi-dilaton theories are presented. As an application, the geodesic elliptical orbits based on a torsion-free connection and the autoparallel orbits based on a connection with a torsion, are examined in Kerr Brans-Dicke geometry. Perihelion shift of the elliptical orbit is calculated in both cases and the results are compared.

Resumen
This thesis investigates the properties of an atomic system exhibiting a giant Kerr nonlinearity. The atomic energy level scheme involves four energy levels. A three level A subsystem in the atom exhibits the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), reducing the spontaneous emission noise. The fourth level leads to an ac-Stark shift of the ground state, which in turn leads to a giant, noiseless Kerr nonlinearity. Two different environments are explored. First, a system comprising of large number of atoms in an optical cavity is analysed. Detailed aspects of noise reduction in this system are investigated. In particular, strong squeezing in the quadrature in phase with the field driving the cavity mode is found, if the effective coupling of light to the atoms is strong. However, the linewidth of the predicted squeezing is found to be very narrow. This is attributed to a very steep linear susceptibility of the atomic medium. Since the widening of the squeezing window is possible only for weaker effective coupling, in turn reducing the squeezing level, a different environment is proposed. This involves a single four level atom, strongly coupled to the cavity mode. In such a strongly coupled system, the most appropriate approach is found to be that formulated in terms of polaritons – composite excitations of the 'atom-cavity molecule'. Adopting the polariton approach, nonclassical correlations in the field leaving the cavity are investigated. Strong photon antibunching is found and the effect of photon blockade predicted and described. The photon blockade effect can also be found in a system comprised of a two level atom coupled to the cavity mode, if the external driving is tuned to one of the vacuum Rabi resonances. A comparison between the two schemes is performed, and it is found that the four level scheme exhibits much better photon blockade. The reason for this is quantum interference between secondary transitions in the dressed states picture. Destructive interference cancels the transitions that would otherwise introduce a second photon into the system, hence producing a more robust photon blockade. All of these results are valid in the regime where external driving is weak. If the external driving strength is increased, the photon statistics (as measured by the zero-delay second order correlation function) changes from strong antibunching to strong bunching, over a relatively narrow range of driving strengths. The occurrence of this change can again be attributed to quantum interference. It is shown that the interference effect prevents the excitation of the composite system by a second photon, but not excitation by a two-photon transition (following the first excitation). Therefore, the third excitation manifold is excited, which then decays back to the first manifold in a two photon cascade. This two photon cascade is the source of correlated photon pairs causing an increase in the second order correlation function. The dynamics of forward scattering of light is presented, and nonclassical behaviour of the delay dependence of correlation function ('overshoots' and 'undershoots') is discussed. For the analytical treatment of this system, a method based on the polariton approach is devised, which includes the treatment of driving and damping. It is shown that this method is ideally suited to the analysis of strongly coupled systems, where only a few photons contribute to the dynamics.

Resumen
Art historian Joan Kerr (1938-2004) championed many little-known artists in her democratic approach to Australian art history. As an architectural historian she held strong views on how ??heritage?? restoration should be conducted. She was always entertaining, at times controversial. Virginia Spate described her as fulfilling Baudelaire??s definition of a critic as ??partial, passionate and political??.1 Using material from Kerr??s personal papers, interviews with Kerr herself and with family members, friends and colleagues, as well as selections from her impressive body of published work, I have aimed to write a sympathetic yet clearsighted biography of a woman who was, to quote her husband Jim Kerr, ??a teacher, writer, wife, mother and possum stirrer??.2 Biography has not always enjoyed academic attention and until late in the 20th century it was traditionally consigned to history.3 Yet this has been an uneasy liaison and biography is now considered a hybrid form, between history and literature, with links to autobiography, psychology, sociology and anthropology. In the introductory chapter I explore the potential of these disciplines for interpreting the facts of a life. I also include a survey of literary biographical writing (including useful models), a discussion of the concept of ??public intellectual?? in relation to Joan Kerr??s reputation in Australian art history and technical issues such as structure, voice and ??speaking for??. Subsequent chapters trace Joan Kerr??s private life ?? childhood, health, education, marriage and motherhood ?? as well as her academic achievements, her work in 19th- and 20th-century Australian art and architectural history, her curatorial practice and major publications, her use of humour and satire and confrontations with art critics, academics and administrators. The final chapter encompasses Kerr??s tribute dinner at Government House in June 2003, her death on 22 February 2004 and funeral on 1 March 2004. In writing this biography I have aimed to do justice to Joan Kerr??s life and work as well as to produce an informed piece of scholarship that could be enjoyed by everyone interested in Australia??s cultural heritage.

This Thesis describes the basic framework of a relativistic ray-tracing code for analyzing accretion processes around Kerr black holes. We begin in Chapter 1 with a brief historical summary of the major advances in black hole astrophysics over the past few decades. In Chapter 2 we present a detailed description of the ray-tracing code, which can be used to calculate the transfer function between the plane of the accretion disk and the detector plane, an important tool for modeling relativistically broadened emission lines. Observations from the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer have shown the existence of high frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HFQPOs) in a number of black hole binary systems. In Chapter 3, we employ a simple \hot spot" model to explain the position and amplitude of these HFQPO peaks. The power spectrum of the periodic X-ray light curve consists of multiple peaks located at integral combinations of the black hole coordinate frequencies, with the relative amplitude of each peak determined by the orbital inclination, eccentricity, and hot spot arc length. In Chapter 4, we introduce additional features to the model to explain the broadening of the QPO peaks as well as the damping of higher frequency harmonics in the power spectrum. The complete model is used to fit the power spectra observed in XTE J1550-564, giving confidence limits on each of the model parameters. In Chapter 5 we present a description of the structure of a relativistic alpha-disk around a Kerr black hole. Given the surface temperature of the disk, the observed spectrum is calculated using the transfer function mentioned above.
(cont.) The features of this modified thermal spectrum may be used to infer the physical properties of the accretion disk and the central black hole. In Chapter 6 we develop a Monte Carlo code to calculate the detailed propagation of photons from a hot spot emitter scattering through a corona surrounding the black hole. The coronal scattering has two major observable effects: the inverse-Compton process alters the photon spectrum by adding a high energy power-law tail, and the random scattering of each photon effectively damps out the highest frequency modulations in the X-ray light curve.

This doctoral dissertation focuses on the nonlinear optical response of water vapour as well as some solids at terahertz (THz) frequencies. In this study, the propagation of broadband single-cycle THz pulses through a medium with the third-order nonlinear optical response is theoretically investigated. Also, a technique to measure the nonlinear response of transparent materials based on the time-domain THz spectroscopy is developed, which provides frequency dispersion curves of the nonlinear Kerr coefficient (n₂). A numerical model is used to simulate the THz pulse propagation. This model takes into account non-paraxial effects, self-focusing, and diffraction, as well as dispersion, in both the linear and nonlinear optical regimes. The contribution of non-instantaneous Kerr-type nonlinearity to the overall instantaneous and delayed Kerr effect at the THz frequencies is investigated. It is shown how increasing the nonlinear relaxation time and its dispersion modifies the THz pulse after the propagation through a transparent medium. The effect of linear dispersion on self-action during pulse propagation is also discussed. Moreover, the nonlinear spectroscopy of water vapour at THz frequencies is reported. Atmospheric water vapour has a rich spectrum with several strong resonances at frequencies below 3 THz, falling within the range of operation of most existing THz sources. An extremely large nonlinear response to THz radiation is observed at the positions of these resonances. Using the optical Kerr model for the nonlinear response, a minimum nonlinear refractive index of the order of 10² m²/W is estimated. The results provide insight into the energy levels of the water molecule and give a more accurate picture of its response to electromagnetic radiation, paving the way to more accurate THz spectroscopy, imaging, and sensing systems, and thereby facilitating future emerging THz technologies. Finally, the nonlinear response of solids at THz frequencies is studied. It has been shown that a phonon-induced THz Kerr effect can result in a larger nonlinear refractive index than the nonlinear refractive index at the visible or near-infrared range (optical Kerr effect). This pronounced nonlinear optical behavior is verified using a time-domain characterization approach. The results indicate a large delay occurred to the THz fields as they transmit through some of the material samples. In the frequency domain, the induced nonlinear phase shift of the intense THz field is shown to be relatively large of the order of 0.1 rad. From the phase information, the nonlinear phase is extracted by which the dispersion profile of n₂ is obtained.

Resumen
This thesis explores the connection between Philip Kerr (1882-1940) and the Irish Question in the early twentieth century. To date there has been no substantial survey of his Irish policy. Through consultation o f new sources the study explores the evolution of Kerr's thought on Ireland in light of his family, his faith, and his political background. Kerr's work on Ireland is particularly interesting as an imperialist, keen federalist, an admirer of the United States and not least as a Catholic who converted to Christian Science. The core of this piece explores Kerr's role in Irish affairs as Prime Minister David Lloyd George's secretary between 1916 and 1921, and the potentially influential role that he held at Downing Street. Although his biographers and historians have alluded to his involvement in the drafting o f the 1920 Government of Ireland Bill, none have considered in detail the extent o f the work that Kerr carried out in relation to Ireland between 1919 and 1921. The study addresses this by exploring Kerr's position as an individual who was not a statesman, but an influential figure close to the centre o f power, who was closely involved with the various forces working to shape an Irish settlement. The thesis adds to the existing biographical literature on Kerr by anchoring him within the Anglo-Irish story. The fact that the Bill he drafted remained as the basis for the Government o f Northern Ireland until 1972, and was not repealed until 1998, points to Kerr's modem relevance, and to the importance of recognising the work that he carried out behind the scenes during one o f the most crucial periods in Anglo-Irish history.
