Texto completoThere has been an upsurge of interest in Christian spirituality in recent years. In this thesis I will provide a brief survey of the history and forms of Christian spirituality in order to sketch the background against which this study will be situated with specific reference to the history of contemplative spirituality. Beginning with the life and teachings of the Desert Fathers it will show that contemplative prayer is firmly rooted in the ancient Christian tradition. More specifically, I will focus on two contemporary exponents of the contemplative tradition of spirituality, namely Thomas Keating (1923-2018) and Henri Nouwen (1932-1996).

Texto completoK. Lee Scott, a resident of Birmingham, Alabama, is a living composer of choral, instrumental, and vocal music who has received commendation from conductors, composers, musicologists, and publishers. Scott has composed over three hundred works with both sacred and secular texts. Ninety percent of Scott’s works are commissions from university, high school, church, and community choirs throughout the United States and from choirs in Canada, the Netherlands, and South Africa. Several university and professional choirs have recorded Scott’s music, including The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), The University of Mississippi, Brigham Young University, The University of Miami, The Lee Scott Singers, and The Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
His compositional attributes include an avoidance of trivial rhythmic motives, controlled diatonic harmonic structure, an inclination towards reflective and insightful texts, and an obvious understanding and appreciation for ancient church traditions and their continued relevance and application. Further, Scott understands for whom he composes, their musical and technical abilities, and creates music that is accessible to both singers and audiences. The influence of composers such as Ralph Vaughan Williams, Paul Hindemith, and Igor Stravinsky is identified in Scott’s specific use of rhythmic and harmonic devices. These facts act as a catalyst for this study and have led to the discovery of three basic issues: (1) in no known source has the entire body of work been examined for style or musical content; (2) Scott’s compositional style, including text selection, melodic construction, rhythmic motives and development, and harmonic structure techniques, have been minimally studied in previous research; (3) there are no conclusive comparisons of Scott’s use of traditional sacred texts such as Te Deum with that of other known composers.
This study enables conductors, composers, teachers, and scholars to gain a better understanding of the music of K. Lee Scott and his distinct compositional style. Further, knowledge of Scott’s compositional style allows the choral conductor and teacher to engage in an informed performance of Scott’s Te Deum. Through analysis of several key works within Scott’s oeuvre and subsequent comparison to other well-known composers, teachers and conductors will be able to find new teaching and programming opportunities.

Texto completoTaking as a starting point the Figure/Background division as established in art theory, this work tries first to reframe it within the cinematographic studies, and to link it to wider aspects of geometric rendering of space (the Perspective System) as a symbolic form of apprehending reality. In order to do so, this work addresses a popular film genre where the Figure/Background issues are central: the giant monster movies that had their Golden Age in the 50’s and 60’, a time when traditional models of representation came to a crisis with the arrival of modern cinema. In the second part of this work, hermeneutic analysis is put into work to address the comeback of the giant monster in contemporary audiovisual culture, its aesthetic function in our digital era and its connection with new forms of representing reality in science fiction cinema, as well as the apparently paradoxical conversion of the giant monster in a sort of intimate sign for the viewer.

Kenting National Park is the most famous tourist destination attracts large number of tourists visit every year, during tourist season, hotel rooms are hard to find, to solve the accommodation problem, a large number of hotel constructs thus the rise, according to industry statistics show Kenting has more than 900 hotels in communities, each community has a different environment, culture, ecology, each hotel is trying to figure how to use their resources more effectively, in the competitive business environment to create profit, this study attempts to identify the success of their communities and operators, provide communities to increase their chances of success. "resource-based theory" is the key, using the case study method to find 4 hotels make any profit in recent years, to observe, interview and collect the date, to understand the key of success, analysis and proposed results and recommendations. Case study results show Kenting''s hotel industry after operating results have a high rate of return guests, high rate of occupancy, high profit, analysis the success of the business into 1. External Resources: geographical location, rich natural ecological, interaction with guests. 2.The difference in the strength of internal resources section: architectural space design is unique, second is to have commercial and breakfast way of doing business, but yet maintain traditional of operating characteristics, quality services, the concept of brand marketing, these differences in the strength is important factors affecting pricing strategies.

Texto completoBecause of their relatively high coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of about 1·10-6 K-1, LAS-type glass-ceramics consisting mainly of keatite solid solution (s.s.) are much more sensitive to fracture due to thermal shock than glass-ceramics consisting mainly of high-quartz s.s., the CTE of which is about 10 times smaller. Nevertheless, it was shown that with certain parameters a glass-ceramic consisting of keatite s.s. can be produced to satisfy the criteria for thermal shock resistance. In this work the thermal shock behaviour (TUF) in a keatite s.s. glass-ceramic was investigated and optimised. A basic thermal shock resistance (“Basic-TUF”) is caused by the parameters a, E and n which can be increased through suitable ceramisation parameters. This additional thermal shock resistance can be attributed to a surface layer of approximately 100 µm thickness. The ceramisation process can induce compressive stresses of up to 10 MPa, which increase consequently the TUF. These small stresses were semi-quantitatively characterised by the use of Vickers indentation and described by a model, based on the theory of fracture toughness. The stresses influence the crack growth of the induced cracks. The length of these Vickers cracks can be correlated to the stresses and the TUF. As a consequence the TUF can be identified as a surface near property. It is also possible to distinguish between samples with high and low TUF-values

Buster Keaton’s movies are silent comedies that, above all, should be considered in the context of the classical Hollywood cinema of the pioneering era. Besides an apparent simplicity and its immediate meaning, they incorporate elements which are typical of the surrealistic aesthetic. Throughout this dissertation I intend to make those elements explicit, exploring common issues, associations and analogies with those aesthetics, in terms of the principles that preside to the creation of a surrealistic work of art. In order to accomplish that I shall focus on the period 1919-1929, during which Buster Keaton directed nineteen shorts and eleven features, also assuming the main characters in every one of those films. Therefore, I will first analyse Keaton’s feature films, and I will distinguish Go West for I consider it paradigmatic of what I want to stress. Then I will analyse the shorts, using the same kind of approach, favouring The Blacksmith, in order to verify if the surrealistic elements we find in Keaton’s shorts are of the same nature as those elements present in the feature movies.

Texto completoJohnston, Phillip. "The polysynchronous film score: the relationship between music and image/narrative in contemporary scores for silent film". Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.13/1306492.
Texto completoThe medium of contemporary scores for silent film offers extraordinary opportunities for innovative relationships between music and film. The “polysynchronous film score” is a term suggested for the purpose of this paper, referring to film scores whose relationship to the image/narrative falls outside the established analytical dichotomy of the terms synchronous/asynchronous, upon which the prevailing discourse in film music studies has been based. The research has a threefold intention: i) to identify the dominant conventions of film music, and silent film music in particular, and show how they are adhered to in contemporary scores for silent film. ; ii) to show why the art form of contemporary scores for silent films provides unique opportunities to work outside of these conventions. ; iii) to point the way to possible alternative relationships between music and film. I begin by discussing current thinking about the relationship between music and film, and how film music conventions are maintained in contemporary scores for silent films, as well as the ways in which assumptions about “silent film music” influence the latter. I then discuss both the history and technique of silent film scores in their original incarnation (circa 1895–1930). This is followed by a short history of the art form of contemporary scores for silent film, focusing mainly on a discussion of the work of some important practitioners and an analysis of excerpts from their work in terms of the conventions that I have discussed in earlier chapters. I then give some specific examples that exemplify some of the possibilities for the polysynchronous approach, drawn from my own work. The last part of my written thesis is an exegesis of my current creative practice work: the 65-minute score for Lotte Reiniger’s 1927 silhouette animation The Adventures of Prince Achmed, focusing on the ways in which it expresses the ideas of polysynchronicity and innovation in silent film scoring.
