Resumen
The cultivation of ‘cultural literacy’ in students from multicultural backgrounds may occur outside schooling practices in the US due to curricular framing and a lack of interest in integrating cultural education at schools. ‘Cultural literacy’ warrants student participation and requires a conducive learning environment where multiethnic students can seek inspiration through exploration. The San Antonio Writing Project organizes literacy project called the Kahani Project, and it fosters creativeness and facilitates authentic expression of cultural funds of knowledge of Indian American students. Performing arts including dance and music engage Indian students and enable them to learn about their culture, heritage, and religion. The Kahani Project is culturally contextualized writing activity, where Asian Indian American students write about their generational practices that may not addressed in schools in the US. This qualitative study explores two narratives written for the Kahani Project. The study utilized Leiblich et al., holistic content analysis to arrive at themes, categories, and meta categories. The findings revealed Indian students’ willingness to preserve their culture through writing about Indian dance and music. The second inference of this study was that Indian students’ heritage is neglected and excluded in US curriculum.

Resumen
ObjectiveThis study aims to measure the prevalence of mental health disorders in low-resource settings through telepsychiatry and evaluate data from Pakistan’s Sehat Kahani nurse-assisted online clinics serving low-income communities. This will help to understand the magnitude and nature of the demand for contextual therapies to promote mental health. The paper will discuss the challenges faced in these settings, such as limited access to mental health facilities, stigma and opportunities telemedicine brings.DesignAn observational cross-sectional study of telepsychiatry consultations using Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 to screen for depression and anxiety was conducted between October and December 2022.SettingThis research was conducted at Dadar Mansehra e-health clinics of Sehat Kahani with telepsychiatry services in Pakistan.ParticipantsThe study included 2660 participants who visited Sehat Kahani e-health clinics between October and December 2022 and voluntarily completed the questionnaire for data collection.ResultsThe study was comprised of 2660 participants with a mean age of 34.3 years. The study findings show that the majority of participants were females (98.4%), 16.9% of participants had moderate depression, and 20.8% had severe depression. Furthermore, the participants who were widowed/divorced were more likely to have depression than those who were single (OR=3.3, 95% CI (2.0 to 5.2)).ConclusionsBased on the findings, most study participants were female, and their mental health was negatively impacted. Women in Pakistan are disproportionately affected by the rising rates of depression and anxiety, and telepsychiatry therapies effectively respond to this growing need. Potentially, it is a game-changer for dealing with mental health problems. Telepsychiatry can help policymakers and mental health professionals to develop effective low-income mental health initiatives.

Resumen
It may also be taken as an analogy regarding the significance of retaining moderation and equilibrium in one's life. Amitabh firmly believes in the existentialist perspective that acknowledges life's transience and fleetingness. The conventional ways of thinking and doing are unable to grasp the complexity of human existence. Both of these ideas are congruent with a sense of uncertainty about the nature of human life and the connection between people and the wider environment in which they live. After World War II, the fragmented world was forced to re-evaluate human existence and look for meaning and purpose in life. Amitabh Bhattacharya's ‘Kahani’ (the story), a contemporary song, prompts its listeners to discover the authenticity of life.

Resumen
In June 2003, symptoms of stunting and leaf curling resembling symptoms of tomato leaf curl disease, as well as reductions in yields, were observed on tomato plants in the western (Combani and Kahani) and eastern (Dembeni, Kaoueni, and Tsararano) regions of Mayotte, a French island in the Comoros Archipelago located in the northern part of the Mozambique Channel. The whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), was observed colonizing tomato plants and other vegetable crops at low levels. Overall, 13 leaf samples with symptoms were collected from tomato plants among the five regions and tested for the presence of begomoviruses using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay with two sets of degenerate primers designed to amplify two regions of the A component of begomoviruses. Primers MP16 and MP82 amplify an approximately 500-bp fragment located between the intergenic conserved nonanucleotide sequence and the first 200 bp of the coat protein (CP) gene (2). Primers AV494 and AC1048 amplify the approximately 550-bp core region of the CP gene (3). Six leaf samples, one from Combani, three from Dembeni, and two from Kahani, gave a PCR product of the expected size with both sets of primers. No PCR products were obtained with degenerate primers designed for begomovirus DNA B or β. The approximately 500- and 550-bp PCR products from one sample each of Combani (EMBL Accession Nos. AJ620912 and AJ620915, respectively), Dembeni (EMBL Accession Nos. AJ620911 and AJ620914, respectively), and Kahani (EMBL Accession Nos. AJ620913 and AJ620916, respectively) were sequenced. For the 489-bp sequences obtained with the MP16/MP82 primer set, the three isolates had 90 to 95% nucleotide identity (DNAMAN; Lynnon BioSoft, Quebec). The most significant sequence alignments (NCBI and BLAST) were with begomoviruses; 80 to 83% nucleotide identity was obtained with the Tomato yellow leaf curl Morondava virus (TYLCMV) isolates from Madagascar (EMBL Accession Nos. AJ422123 and AJ422124), 80 to 82% nucleotide identity was obtained with the South African cassava mosaic virus (SACMV) isolates (GenBank and EMBL Accession Nos. AF155806 and AJ422132), and 79 to 81% nucleotide identity was obtained with the East African cassava mosaic Malawi virus (EMBL Accession No. AJ006460). For the 522-bp sequences obtained with the AV494/AC1048 primer set, 95 to 97% nucleotide identity was shown between the three isolates. The most significant sequence alignments were also with begomoviruses; TYLCMV isolate Morondava (EMBL Accession No. AJ422125) with 86 to 88% nucleotide identity, Tomato yellow leaf curl virus isolates (GenBank and EMBL Accession Nos. AF105975, AJ489258, AB014346, AF024715, AF071228, and X76319) with 86 to 87% nucleotide identity, and SACMV isolate M12 (EMBL Accession No. AJ422132) with 85 to 86% nucleotide identity. According to the current taxonomic criteria for the provisional classification of a new begomovirus species, nucleotide sequence identity in the core region of the CP <90% (1), the tomato begomovirus from Mayotte is a new species and is provisionally named Tomato leaf curl Mayotte virus. Resumen
Biological and molecular properties of Tomato leaf curl Madagascar virus isolates from Morondova and Toliary (ToLCMGV-[Tol], -[Mor]), Tomato leaf curl Mayotte virus isolates from Dembeni and Kahani (ToLCYTV-[Dem], -[Kah]) and a Tomato yellow leaf curl virus isolate from Réunion (TYLCV-Mld[RE]) were determined. Full-length DNA components of the five isolates from Madagascar, Mayotte and Réunion were cloned and sequenced and, with the exception of ToLCMGV-[Tol], were shown to be both infectious in tomato and transmissible by Bemisia tabaci. Sequence analysis revealed that these viruses had genome organizations of monopartite begomoviruses and that both ToLCMGV and ToLCYTV belong to the African begomoviruses but represent a distinct monophyletic group that we have tentatively named the South West islands of the Indian Ocean (SWIO). All of the SWIO isolates examined were apparently complex recombinants. None of the sequences within the recombinant regions closely resembled that of any known non-SWIO begomovirus, suggesting an isolation of these virus populations.

Resumen
A novel integration method for quadratic vector fields was introduced by Kahan in 1993. Subsequently, it was shown that Kahan's method preserves a (modified) measure and energy when applied to quadratic Hamiltonian vector fields. Here we generalize Kahan's method to cubic resp. higher degree polynomial vector fields and show that the resulting discretization also preserves modified versions of the measure and energy when applied to cubic resp. higher degree polynomial Hamiltonian vector fields.

Resumen
Three distinct tomato-infecting begomoviruses have been identified from Indonesia (GenBank Accessions Nos. AB100304, AB100305, and DQ083765). Severe yellow leaf curl epidemics have been observed on tomato on Java Island since the late 1990s. Viral DNA was extracted (2) from one such sample collected in Lembang, West Java in 1998. Polymerase chain reaction with previously described primers was used to detect the presence of geminiviral DNA-A (4), DNA-B (3), and associated satellite DNA (1). The predicted 1.4-kb DNA-A fragment was amplified with the general primer pair PAL1v1978/PAR1c715 and then cloned and sequenced. DNA-B and satellite DNA were not detected in the sample. On the basis of the partial DNA-A sequences, specific primers were designed to amplify and sequence the complete DNA-A component (2,762 nucleotides, GenBank Accession No. AF189018). The DNA-A sequence contained the geminivirus-conserved nanosequence TAATATTAC in the loop of the hairpin structure of the intergenic region and six open reading frames including two in the virus sense and four in the complementary sense. Pairwise comparison of the full-length DNA-A sequence with those of other begomoviruses available in the GenBank database was done by the MegAlign software (DNASTAR, Inc, Madison, WI). Highest nucleotide sequence identity (74.1%) was with Tomato leaf curl Mayotte virus-[Kahani] (GenBank Accession No. AJ865340). Comparison of the full-length DNA-A sequence with the three above mentioned tomato-infecting begomoviruses from Indonesia also showed less than 71% nucleotide sequence identities. Because the DNA-A sequence had less than 89% identity with other begomoviruses, it should be classified as a distinct virus according to the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses. The name Tomato yellow leaf curl Indonesia virus-[Lembang] (TYLCIDV-[Lem]) is proposed. The presence of at least four distinct tomato-infecting begeminiviruses on Java Island needs to be considered when developing tomato cultivars with stable resistance to tomato (yellow) leaf curl disease. Resumen
Abstract: This essay engages the thought of US rabbi Meir Kahane (1932–1990), a provocative, militant, and, to many, demonized figure in postwar American Judaism. Among his other interventions in Jewish life in the 1960s and 1970s, Kahane played a major role in the movement for Soviet Jewry that occupied Jews from the early 1960s through the early 1980s when the USSR loosened its restrictions on Jewish emigration. I suggest that, for Kahane, the movement for Soviet Jewry was much more than protesting the unfair treatment of Jews in Soviet Russia. It was, for him, part of a global conflagration between democracy and communism that implicated Jews, Vietnam, Israel, and the Arab world, as well as the US, China, and Russia. Moreover, the US was a fundamental part of Kahane's views on Soviet Jewry; he saw it as the pivotal player in the war against communism, which for him also represented the battle against the erasure of religious freedom and proved crucial for the support of Israel against its Arab enemies. I begin by briefly introducing Kahane, his relationship to the US and religion, and then develop his complicated views on Soviet Jewry and the US's role in saving Jews in the Soviet Union.

This article deals with Rabbi Meir Kahane’s assimilation doctrine, an under-studied aspect of previous published research on Kahane. The present study suggests that this doctrine is catalysed by a palingenetic myth of decline and rebirth, which also catalyses Kahane’s ideology. By proposing this, this article aims to offer a new perspective on the understanding of what drives Kahane’s ideology. It is further suggested that Kahane’s palingenetic myth is in part built around a myth of ‘intraracial antagonism’ between the American Jewish Establishment (AJE) and the ‘common Jew’. Following Bruce Lincoln’s theory of myth, it is here contended that Kahane’s assimilation doctrine is presented as ‘ideology in narrative form’. The study surveys the alleged causes and effects of assimilation, and what solutions Kahane presents to put an end to it. Among the alleged causes, Kahane singles out the AJE’s purported gutting of Jewish religious education, which is said to have alienated Jewish youth from their religion. Aside from curtailing Jewish continuity, Kahane for example identifies Jews engaging in social causes that allegedly run counter to Jewish interests as one alleged effect of assimilation. To end assimilation Kahane promotes a solution of campaigning in Jewish communities to ultimately put a stop to intermarriage, to instil hadar and ahavat Yisroel among Jews by the means of a regenerated Jewish educational system, and to encourage Jews to ‘return’ to Israel.

Resumen
We review the celebrated Gleason-Kahane-Zelazko and Kowalski-Slodkowski theorems from the setting of associative Banach algebras to the wider class of nonassociative Jordan Banach algebras. We introduce the notion of almost multiplicative linear functionals in Jordan Banach algebras and prove a theorem extending a former result of B.E. Johnson for Banach algebras by employing the more recent concept of condition spectrum. We show how to rediscover the Gleason-Kahane-Zelazko theorem for Jordan Banach algebras from the corresponding version for almost multiplicative linear functionals.

The behavior at infinity of the Fourier transform of the random measures that appear in the theory of multiplicative chaos of Mandelbrot, Peyrière, and Kahane is an area quite unexplored. For context and further reference, we first present an overview of this theory and then the result, which is the main objective of this work, generalizing a result previously announced by Kahane. We establish an estimate for the asymptotic behavior of the second moment of the Fourier transform of the limit random measure in the theory of multiplicative chaos. After looking at the behavior at infinity of the Fourier transform of some remarkable functions and measures, we prove a formula essentially due to Frostman, involving the Riesz kernels.

Resumen
Given that the expected return and variance of return of two gambles are equal the hypothesis that the gamble with the greater positive skewness of return will be chosen by an expected utility maximiser is appealing. However the hypothesis is not, in general, correct. Brockett and Garven (1998) and Brocket and Kahane (1992) demonstrate this both theoretically and by constructing counter examples.A particularly revealing example is the following one constructed by Brockett and Kahane. Gamble A has the two outcomes 2.45 and 7.49 with probabilities 0.5141 and 0.4859 respectively. Gamble B has the three outcomes 0, 4.947 and 10 with probabilities 0.12096, 0.750085 and 0.128955 respectively. Even though gamble A exhibits lower expected return, a higher variance and lower positive skewness than gamble B it is preferred to gamble B by an expected utility maximiser on the basis of any standard utility function such as power, log or exponential. Consequently in this example of theirs the expected utility maximiser exhibits an aversion to higher expected return and higher skewness and a preference for higher variance. As noted by Brockett and Kahane these results cannot be dismissed as decision makers “trading” variance for mean or skewness or having a strange idiosyncratic utility function.

Resumen
Kahan discretization is applicable to any quadratic vector field and produces a birational map which approximates the shift along the phase flow. For a planar quadratic canonical Hamiltonian vector field, this map is known to be integrable and to preserve a pencil of cubic curves. Generically, the nine base points of this pencil include three points at infinity (corresponding to the asymptotic directions of cubic curves) and six finite points lying on a conic. We show that the Kahan discretization map can be represented in six different ways as a composition of two Manin involutions, corresponding to an infinite base point and to a finite base point. As a consequence, the finite base points can be ordered so that the resulting hexagon has three pairs of parallel sides which pass through the three base points at infinity. Moreover, this geometric condition on the base points turns out to be characteristic: if it is satisfied, then the cubic curves of the corresponding pencil are invariant under the Kahan discretization of a planar quadratic canonical Hamiltonian vector field.

AbstractWe extend the recent results of R. Latała and O. Guédon about equivalence of Lq-norms of logconcave random variables (Kahane-Khinchin’s inequality) to the quasi-convex case. We construct examples of quasi-convex bodies Kn ⊂ Rn which demonstrate that this equivalence fails for uniformly distributed vector on Kn (recall that the uniformly distributed vector on a convex body is logconcave). Our examples also show the lack of the exponential decay of the “tail” volume (for convex bodies such decay was proved by M. Gromov and V. Milman).

Resumen
This qualitative study examines the factors that determine older Indian adults’ perceptions of successful aging. Comparisons are made between the Western and Singaporean notions of successful aging and care is taken to identify the differences in the definition of successful aging across gender, income, and educational levels. Finally, I analyze the role played by state policy and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in understanding and defining successful aging in Singapore. Concepts from Kahana, Kahana, and Kercher’s (1999) model of successful aging are used to test their degree of importance as factors associated with older Indians’ definition of successful aging in Singapore. Three variables, work status, marital status, and living arrangements, were employed to determine their influence on respondents’ perceptions of successful aging. In general, regardless of income and education, older males viewed financial stability and females indicated familial networks as key factors in successful aging.
