Notre thèse porte sur l’histoire de la communauté juive au Liban, notamment à partir de la fin du mandat français en 1943 et de la création de l’État d’Israël en 1948, jusqu’à sa désagrégation et dispersion au lendemain de la Guerre des Six-Jours en 1967. Nous souhaitons examiner la place cruciale occupée par l’Alliance Israélite Universelle (AIU), établissement éducatif principal de la communauté juive libanaise, dans la formation identitaire de ses anciens membres jusqu’à ce jour. À l'appui de notre travail d’archives et des entretiens menés au sein de la diaspora juive-libanaise aujourd’hui, nous avançons que le rôle de l’Alliance Israélite Universelle fut non seulement un important agent de socialisation des Juifs libanais, peut-être le principal, mais que les valeurs dispensées par cette institution renforçaient en outre la notion d’une appartenance ethnique commune et la croyance dans cette appartenance, ressentie comme primordiale. Cependant, cette prise en conscience subjective d’ethnicité – un terme que nous expliciterons et discuterons plus loin - est fortement circonstancielle et relationnelle, et donc non essentielle per se. Ce qui le prouve est d’ailleurs l’expérience migratoire des anciens membres de la communauté juive du Liban. Une expérience qui les conduisit à réévaluer leur conception de soi ainsi que le recours à des stratégies identitaires pour maintenir, changer, transformer ou rejeter leurs identités établies jusqu’à leur départ du Liban
This thesis deals with the history of Lebanon’s Jewish community, in particular from the end of the French mandate period in 1943 and the creation of State of Israel in 1948 to its disintegration and dispersion in the aftermath of the 1967 Six-Day War. I will demonstrate the crucial place the Alliance Israélite Universelle (AIU), the community’s main educational institution, occupies in the identity formation of its former members to this day. Based on our archival work and interviews conducted in today’s Lebanese-Jewish diaspora world-wide, I argue that the AIU in Lebanon was not only a primary agent of socialization but more importantly an institution that reinforced the notion of belonging to a distinct and primordial ethnic community. I explore the subjective awareness of ethnic belonging which is profoundly contingent and relational rather than intrinsic and essential. This is illustrated by the migratory experience of the former members of this community, an experience which led to a reevaluation of their self-conception and the relying of identity strategies in order to keep, change, transform or reject their previously established identities

Situé au cœur d’un environnement hostile et instable, l’État d’Israël est confronté depuis sa déclaration d’indépendance le 14 mai 1948 à des défis existentiels, au premier rang desquels celui de son intégration régionale. Pour faire face à ce qu’il perçoit comme un encerclement, le jeune État hébreu recherche parmi ses voisins proche-orientaux des groupes confessionnels ou ethnolinguistiques susceptibles de s’allier à lui pour fractionner le bloc arabe hostile. Plusieurs éléments font de la communauté maronite du Liban un allié potentiel pour Israël. Durant huit décennies, l’État hébreu et la droite chrétienne au Liban entretiennent de bons rapports. Certains dirigeants israéliens songent à la création d’un nouveau Liban, sous contrôle chrétien et allié à Jérusalem. La relation israélo-maronite a cependant toujours été précaire. Elle est basée sur une position inconfortable pour deux communautés minoritaires dans une région dominée par les Arabes musulmans. Elle est altérée par les interactions dynamiques entre chrétiens et musulmans au Liban et par le conflit israélo-arabe. Cette thèse s’inscrit dans une interrogation sur les capacités de l’État juif à tisser des liens avec d’autres groupes minoritaires au Proche-Orient, ainsi que sur la pertinence du concept d’ « alliance des minorités ». Elle soutient que les politiques régionales d’Israël sont influencées par un certain nombre de représentations héritées de l’époque du Yichouv. Elle fournit des exemples concrets témoignant de l’influence négative que peuvent avoir certaines représentations erronées ou des idées fausses sur la politique d’un État
Located, as it is, at the heart of a hostile and unstable environment, the State of Israel has been faced, since its declaration of independence on 14 May 1948, with existential challenges, its regional integration being one of the major ones. In order to deal with what it saw as being encircled, the young Hebrew state looked among its near-eastern neighbours for denominational or ethno-linguistic groups likely to form an alliance with it in order to divide up the hostile Arabic group. For several reasons, the Maronite group in Lebanon turned out to be a potential ally for Israel. The Hebrew state and Lebanon's Christian right have had good relations for eight decades. Some Israeli rulers have thought about the creation of a new Lebanon, under Christian control and allied with Jerusalem. Yet, the Israeli-Maronite relation has always been fragile. It is based on an uncomfortable position for the two minorities in a region dominated by Muslim Arabs. It is altered by the dynamic interactions between Christians and Muslims in Lebanon and by the Israeli-Arab conflict. This doctoral thesis aims to question the Jewish state's capacities to forge links with other minority groups in the Near East as well as the relevance of the “alliance of minorities” concept. It argues that Israel's regional policies are influenced by a certain number of representations it has inherited from the Yishuv era. It provides tangible examples illustrating the negative influence some misleading representations or false ideas may have on a state's policies

My research aims to investigate the processes of memory and identity reconstruction of Libyan Jews who emigrated to Israel and Italy in the second half of the twentieth century. The research is based on oral sources (interviews and life stories) collected in Israel, Italy, France and Great Britain. It also studies the memorial and heritage activities promoted by individuals and institutions belonging to the Libyan Jewish community in Italy and Israel.

Existe-t-il un pluralisme démocratique, une démocratie différente de celle des normes « occidentales » ? C’est la question que nous nous sommes posés dans notre recherche, en partant sur une hypothèse affirmative, dans un contexte spécifique qui est celui de l’alliance communément contestée entre démocratie et religion. Nous avons décidé de nous pencher sur les démocraties du Proche-Orient, sur leurs particularismes liés au rapport étroit qui existe dans ces pays entre politique et religion. Les pays de la région qui sembleraient à nos yeux les plus démocratiques à ce jour sont le Liban, Israël (en incluant une étude des Territoires palestiniens également), et la Turquie. En tenant pour principes démocratiques l’égalité et la liberté, présents dans leurs constitutions respectives, nous avons décidé d’étudier les spécificités de chaque pays ; celui d’être un Etat confessionnel pour le Liban, un Etat Juif pour Israël, un Etat sans Etat pour les Territoires palestiniens, un Etat à la fois laïc, turc, et islamique pour la Turquie. Il existe des failles démocratiques dans chacun de ses Etats, que nous avons mises en évidence, tout comme des évolutions positives. Le nationalisme présent dans chacun de ces pays est particulièrement prononcé, selon les différentes communautés d’appartenances, ce qui fait de l’appartenance ethnique principale une appartenance nationale ; d’où notre choix ambitieux d’appeler ces Etats des démocraties ethniques, se basant sur l’ethnos (l’appartenance communautaire du peuple). C’est aussi en raison de cette condition qu’ils connaissent surtout des lacunes vis-à-vis de la reconnaissance d’autres appartenances, leurs minorités respectives
Does a democratic pluralism exist, implying a democracy different from the "Western" standards? Based on a positive assumption, this is the question that we attempt to answer to in this research within a specific framework, namely the commonly contested alliance between democracy and religion. We have decided to study Middle-Eastern democracies with their specificities related to the narrow link that exists in those countries between politics and religion. The countries of the area that seemed, as of today, the most democratic to us are Lebanon, Israel (including a study of the Palestinian Territories) and Turkey. Based on the democratic principles of Equality and Liberty, also present in their respective constitutions, we have decided to look into the specificities of each country; such as being a confessional state for Lebanon, a Jewish state for Israel, a state without a state for the Palestinian Territories and a state being at the same time secular, Turkish and Islamic for Turkey. In each of these countries there are democratic flaws that we have highlighted, as well as positive evolutions. The Nationalism present in each of these countries is particularly pronounced according to the different communities to which one belongs, which leads the main ethnic to become a national identification, hence our ambitious choice to name these states ethnic democracies based on the ethnos (people's identification to a community). It is also because of this specificity that they encounter weaknesses towards the recognition of other identifications such as their respective minorities
