Resumen
FR. The purpose of this article is to analyze the relationship between international journalists and local fixers in the context of war reporting. A shadow profession, the craft of the fixer remains unrecognized despite its great contribution to foreign correspondents in unknown and often hostile environments. The role of fixers has become essential to the practice of international journalism and in conflict zones reporting. The authors study the fixers’ input to the work of foreign correspondents and present a case study on Canadian and international journalists who have been accredited by the Canadian military during the war in Afghanistan between 2002 and 2011. The data of this study is based on semi-structured interviews with foreign correspondents and a corpus of documents on media coverage of the war in Afghanistan. The relationship between accredited journalists and local fixers has been a critical part of unembedded independent war reporting. In addition to embedded reporting, most of the journalists interviewed practiced non-embedded war reporting, mainly with Afghan political and civilian sources. The analysis reveals a multifaceted and complex relationship with three main contributions of the fixer, which relate to access, protection and production. The fixer plays a role of scout and translator to ensure access for foreign correspondents to local sources in a territory that has specific linguistic and cultural characteristics (local skill). The fixer plays a protective role based on advice and recommendation actions in a hostile environment to ensure the safety of foreign correspondents (risk skill). The fixer plays a role of content producer by contributing to the journalistic process of newsgathering and production and by suggesting story ideas and story angles as well as conducting interviews and taking images (editorial skill). *** PT.

This study examines journalistic authorship and authorial invisibility from the perspective of pseudonym use. As the question of authorship is rare in journalism studies in Brazil, the attempt to understand this phenomenon combines conceptual bibliographical research with an analysis of the discourses printed in a newspaper from Teresina (capital of the state of Piauí located in northeastern Brazil) in the 1950s. Unlike longitudinal studies on newspaper authorship (the byline) in the United States and England, our interests lie in exploring the historical perspective of a small corpusof documents in order to study the mechanics of power that underlie the concealment of identity. What conditions incite journalists to hide behind a pseudonym? In the regional editions of the O Dia newspaper, the use of the pseudonym (fake byline) permitted a constrained author to participate in a unique game in which the modality of production favoured a strategy that put forth the interests of business, public policy, and the public in its own stylistic expression. Behind a cloak of invisibility, journalists (generally intellectuals) often criticized their adversaries and government. They also created an innovative space in which to exchange with readers, and added to their writing elements linking journalism, rhetoric, and philosophy. Within the framework of a journalistic propaedeutics, the pseudonym also served as a vehicle to promote good practices and critique professional form, outside disciplinary control. The journalistic ideal dreamed of by these journalists was inspired by the lessons of the Enlightenment: extirpate the ignorance afflicting the masses. In this small discursive region taken up by the phenomenon, it was therefore possible to move beyond what had been the case in the American and English press in the twentieth century where the pseudonym was used for political reasons, or when journalists sought to protect themselves from reprisal.

This paper examines the initial results of an exploratory socio-ethnographic inductive and qualitative empirical study. It is based on semi-structured interviews held in 2014 – 2016 with investigative reporters working (or who had worked) in local media and draws upon the notion of the Fifth Estate to help distinguish the three main modes (collaboration, negotiation, conflict) that characterize the relationship between journalists and official sources. The goal is to better understand how the conflictual mode may be linked directly or indirectly to the information and communication technology (ICT) employed by officials and how it may limit the powers of the Fourth Estate—the media. The study focusses on the economic dimensions of these strategies within the context of the of the business model crisis local media in Swiss Romandie has faced over the last fifteen years. The study compiles a typology of ten major constraints systematically brought up by journalists that affect their ability to investigate, and consequently their professional identity and reputation. It concludes with a “necessary reluctance” on the part of the journalists to define investigative journalism precisely—its limits and know-how—so as to conserve a tactical advantage in their relationship with their sources. *** PT. Resumen
Conducted in 2012 to 2013, the current national survey of Kenyan journalists ( N = 504) examines major characteristics of journalism and mass communication training in Kenya. Findings show that training in journalism or mass communication is a prerequisite to practice as a journalist in Kenya. While 45% of journalists were trained at the level of associate degree, 91% said they need to get further training. Kenya Institute of Mass Communication is the most popular institution of journalism and mass communication. Moreover, 65% of respondents perceive the quality of journalism training as good—Though in contrast to this favorable evaluation, local colleges face a litany of serious problems.

Resumen
Professional and quality journalists are subject to an ethical code and their understanding and competence of said ethics code. Ethics are the minimum values or moral traditions that are used to separate truths from mistakes and good from the bad. Journalism ethics are the rules adhered to by journalists. News coverage has objectives. In order to reach said objectives, journalists should adhere to the professional ethics that they comprehend in the news coverage. Such a comprehension cannot be separated from the different interests involved in the news production process. This research aimed to identify the journalists’ understanding of the values of independence, objectivity, their relationship with their sources and gifts from sources. This research used the phenomenology method. Data collection was done via interviews with 13 Radar Malang journalists. The data analysis employed was Turner’s Theory of Structuration. The research findings presented that first, independence and objectivity are ethical values that are impossible for journalists to maintain. This is since news writing involves interpretation and choices because writing the news is the result of the journalists’ interpretation of their economic interests and journalist idealism. The news is written with a particular tendency in mind. Objectivity is only regarded in the scope of the balance of news. Second, there is a dynamic relationship between journalists and the sources of the news. Journalists are always in a dilemma when writing news that relates to the interests of the news sources. Journalists may receive any gifts from the sources so long as they do not relate to the news. In general, journalists should refuse remittance. However, any other kinds of gifts are still tolerable.

Resumen
The assault on the editor of a publication at a South African arts festival by an artist who disliked a review of his concert again highlighted an age-old rift between artists and critics. However, the response that this incident elicited among readers of this and other publications, showed surprising support for the artist rather than for the journalist. If this is read as an indication of a disillusionment among readers with regard to the standards of arts journalism in South Africa, the relationship between arts journalists and society should be re-examined. Ethical journalism rests upon a relationship between journalist and audience, and a sensitivity for the context in which journalism is practised. This article examines arts journalism within changing societal contexts, with a specific focus on the South African situation, where artistic production still bears witness to cultural and ethnic divisions of the past. Against the background of the changes that have occurred in society on a local and global level, it is argued that a re-evaluation of the roles and responsibilities of arts journalists is needed – especially in the light of the formation of new cultural identities after apartheid. In conclusion, an ongoing and indepth debate about the ethical responsibility of arts journalism is suggested in order to ensure its continued relevance within an increasingly commercialised cultural context on the one hand, and within a changing South African society on the other.

Resumen
Despite the widespread concepts of “civic journalism”, “social journalism”, “community-centered journalism”, “citizens journalism”, social projects implemented by the local media remain insufficiently studied. Journalists initiate and organize public discussions on hot issues, defend the rights of low-income families and World War II veterans, raise money for operations. The current research conducted at the School of Journalism at Lomonosov Moscow State University examined the phenomenon of journalists’ participation in solving social issues of local communities. We analyzed the descriptions of 126 social projects by local media and 25 questionnaires. The article discusses the factors that influence decision-making on the implementation of social projects. The authors present the themes, aims of social projects, and 15 types of initiation of social projects, give examples of constructive and nonconstructive relations between journalists and representatives of authorities, business, NGOs in initiation and implementation of social projects. The authors noted that journalists and citizens, to a greater extent than representatives of local authorities, business, NGOs, are initiators of solving social problems and developing the local community. The findings appear to demonstrate that by initiating and realizing social projects, local media are fulfilling the meta-function of the development of civil society. The authors highlight the necessity of supporting journalistic initiatives.

The increased usage of digital technologies has radically impacted the journalism profession across the globe. This qualitative study focuses on the factors influencing the technological adaptation of Twitter usage among journalists in the transforming journalism practice. To gain insights on the central focus of this study, ten (10) local news journalists at the News and Current Affairs Media Prima Berhad (NCA MPB) with professional profiles on Twitter were interviewed. Data analysis were conducted simultaneously with data collection and the NVivo 10 software was used in the coding process. Thematic analysis was employed to analyse the data. Findings revealed THREE (3) significant themes that contributed to the technological adaptation of Twitter usage among journalists, as follows; (i) willingness to collaborate (ii) technology acceptance gap, and (iii) institutional readiness and encouragement, which plays a salient role in facilitating the adoption process as well as bridging the technological gap among the journalists. An interesting finding in this present study warrants that institutional readiness is necessary to understand journalist's propensity to embrace and use cutting-edge technologies, from being a conventional journalist to adapt self and engage in the digital realm. With the blossoming platforms due to online boom and social media, journalists must embrace technology as an enabler for their professional relevance and the news industry survival. In conclusion, the institutional readiness is therefore necessary to ascertain the journalist's propensity to embrace the cutting-edge technologies in performing their challenging role in the changing media industry today. Keywords: Technological adaptation, Twitter, journalism practice, qualitative, media industry.

Resumen
Investigative reporting in the digital era faces challenges due to the presence of online and social media. Long reporting times, limited budgets, and minimal editorial resources increasingly undermine the sustainability of investigative journalism. The competition for rapid news coverage further pressures investigative reporting. Several journalists in Yogyakarta and other regions address these challenges by practicing collaborative journalism through collaborative newsrooms. This research aims to describe how journalists in the field use collaborative newsrooms to produce investigative reports. It explores collaborative journalism practices as a middle ground to deliver credible, public-interest reporting using data and investigative journalism principles. The study employs a case study method, involving in-depth interviews with journalists and the analysis of published news data. The findings show that journalists in Yogyakarta use a temporary and separate model for their collaborative newsrooms, focusing on short-term collaboration on a single topic. These newsrooms leverage technology to facilitate communication and data sharing. Tasks are divided among participants to ensure comprehensive, in-depth, data-driven reporting. The reports are published in online media, serving as a strategic approach to presenting investigative journalistic work often constrained by limited media space.

Resumen
The Romanian written press is torn between the quality of the materials and the struggle for financial survival of Romanian journalists. The situation of the local press in my hometown Arad is representative for the state of the Romanian written and online press as a whole. The traditional model of production, diffusion and reception of printed journalism is currently undergoing a complex reconfiguration. The print media is losing ground to the online press. The online press is also becoming more attractive because of its gratuity. Paying readers of the internet connection can access numerous sites without bothering to buy a press product from the newsstand. Easier access to the online press product, as well as the possibility to intervene anonymously, commenting on various articles posted by journalists, all this led to a decrease in interest in the written press. I will present an up-to-date situation of the local publications, written and online press from Arad, Romania, analyzing some trends that have occurred over time regarding quality of the local journalism. As a method, my study analyzes local Romanian publications in Arad, between 2019 and 2023, following the recurrent trends that appear in writing. I also used my 26 years experience in local mass-media as a guide to better understand the phenomenon. We see an increase in sarcasm, allusive speaking, abusive quotes in traditional journalism. Subjectivity is manifested in the written press both at the level of words and their adjective determinations, as well as graphically, by the preference for exclamation marks, inverted comas and numerous suspension points. We can noticed an extension of the the colloquial tone in local newspaper due to journalist`s desire to be familiar with the reader. Slum expressions win in the press’s discourse, as the rudeness of the language attracts the audience.

Resumen
This article presents a systematic literature review of 378 studies (1997–2017) on online participatory journalism, i.e., audience participation in the professional news production process. Participation can challenge established understandings of journalism and affect the relationship between journalists and audience members as peripheral actors due to the increasingly blurred boundaries between these actors and the renegotiation of authority and power. The review captures research practices regarding the theoretical, conceptual and empirical approach as well as results pertaining to the impact participation has on the journalist–audience relationship and is both interdisciplinary and global in nature. The results show that research mostly focuses on journalism in Europe and North America and examines participation in the interpretation stage rather than in the formation or dissemination stage of the news production process. Longitudinal and comparative studies, examinations of regional and local participation, in-depth audience studies as well as analyses of participation in all three production stages are rare. 121 studies explicitly deal with participation’s impact on the journalist–audience relationship and produce conflicting results: 51% see journalists retaining control over news production process; 42% see shared power; and 7% see mixed results. Notably, power structures differ depending on the examined world region, production stage, and actor perspective. The review illustrates the status quo of research practices as well as the role the audience as peripheral actors play in the news production process and concludes with five observations about the field as well as future avenues to close identified research gaps.

Abstract Editorial offices are being shut down in small municipalities, raising the question of whether hyperlocal media can fill the gap left by legacy media. However, very little is known about the shape of this gap and thus to what extent it can be filled by hyperlocal media. To inform this line of research, this study asks: what happens to the news coverage of a municipality when there is no permanent presence of journalists? A quantitative content analysis (N = 606), measuring news topics, framing, style, original reporting and sourcing practices, was performed regarding the news coverage of 12 Swedish municipalities – six with editorial offices of a legacy media organisation and six without. The results indicate that municipalities receive less original coverage, community news receives less attention and institutional actors are quoted more often when there is no permanent presence of journalists. Implications for communities and hyperlocal media are discussed.

Abstract Against the backdrop of struggles that local broadcasters in Turkey who advocate for Kurdish minority rights have endured, I discuss local broadcast journalists’ tactics for creating and maintaining programming that caters to the ongoing Kurdish conflict. Local ethnic broadcasting in Kurdish provinces has long strived to offer an alternative discourse than that of the state propaganda and to mobilize political support within and outside Turkey. In order to illustrate the role of Kurdish activist journalism in political mobilization, I analyze examples of local radio programming from 2010 to 2013, a period during which broadcasters in Kurdish provinces enjoyed relative freedom. I aim to illustrate the instrumentality of activist journalism in an authoritarian regime, and the ways in which local broadcasting is utilized as tactical media by both activist journalists and the community they serve.

PPolitical journalism as a field of study under the banner of journalism study, needs to be explored deeper in the context of Indonesia. Indonesia is one of the biggest democratic countries in the world. The country has implemented the system of direct elections in every five years to elect regional leaders as well as president and vice president. This paper aims to shed light on the practice of political journalism in Malang Raya. Malang Raya is a region in East Java Province which is comprised of Kota Malang, Kabupaten Malang and Kota Batu. The writers conducted semi-structured interviews with 6 reporters. The findings of this research are: (i) journalist and contributors do not obtain a complete freedom in the process of gathering the news and writing the news; (ii) journalist and contributors have obeyed the Indonesian ethics of journalistic, and (iii) to some extent, there are some factors influencing political reporting, i.e.: the interests of media firms, local culture, and geographical locations. Furthermore, politics is an interesting and challenging issue to report. Journalists can face some challenges and problems in reporting politics, as it also happened to our informants. In general, media firms have capacity to interpret the politicians conduct, and influence voters behaviour. In return, politicians are also in need of media, in terms of disseminating their ideas and obtaining some information about the communities.

AbstractThe paper approaches the ‘ideology’ of Romanian post-communist journalism as identified in local news media organisations. We focus on the practical philosophy of journalism, emphasizing elements such as autonomy, truth, objectivity; and the relationship of journalists and news organisations with political actors. Special attention is given to the interplay between this practical philosophy and the political and economic constraints influencing news media organisations in Romania. We approach this topic using in-depth interviews with journalists and editors from news media organisations in three Romanian cities. We argue that two different ‘ideologies’ of journalism as a profession exist. These are complemented by a tendency toward reducing journalism to a simple occupation, linked to the politicization of media ownership in Romania and the widespread use of media organisations as vehicles for the free speech of their owners.

What are the issues and problems to consider when discussing local (community) media? What are the challenges that local media are facing nowadays? Are phenomena such as: civic journalism, niche journalism, alternative journalism, or the combination of professional and civic journalism, opportunities for further development of local media or are they a threat to the professionalization of local media? In my paper, I discuss these issues within the context of culture—exploring local media situations in a variety of countries (e.g., Poland, UK, USA, Germany). However, the primary focus is on local media in Poland, and I examine what the biggest challenges are and whether current processes in journalism and media influence local media, and if so, to what extent. On the basis of my own qualitative research (case studies), I show how complex the local relations are and the level of involvement of local journalists and local media owners in these networks of relations. This complexity of relations (media-politics, media-business, media-church, media-media, etc.) might often be a cause of conflicts of interest (individual or institutional) or media bias.

A survey found the public does not strongly endorse traditional journalism norms of watchdog and rapid reporting. Furthermore, when opinions of survey respondents and journalists were compared, survey respondents were significantly more likely to say providing a community forum, a public journalism principle, was extremely important. African Americans, Hispanics, women, and adults with less education and income strongly endorsed the public journalism principle of offering solutions to problems. A factor analysis of thirteen public and traditional journalism roles and characteristics revealed four dimensions of journalism as perceived by the public: good neighbor, watchdog, unbiased and accurate, and fast.

Dharamshala is home to the Tibetan Government-in-Exile. Its small-town journalism landscape is unique due to specific forms of community journalism practice adopted by Indian and Tibetan journalists. The Tibetan press there faces a paradox: simultaneously “local and community specific” for Tibetans-in-exile, “refugee voices” for the international community, and “foreign journalism” for Indians. This framing study identified interpretive packages in news coverage of conflict and integration between Dharamshala communities, by examining stories from community news outlets. Indian Hindi journalists enact a “community booster” role by actively framing issues of conflict in favor of the community, while Tibetan journalists’ approach was comparatively more balanced.

Abstract: In this paper we argue that in local news media - different than in national news media - proximity is an important concept that can function as a rhetorical device to establish reliability and trust. In times of extreme pressure on local journalism, local reporters can and should benefit from the knowledge they have of the local situation. For this qualitative research we analyzed 52 interviews with local journalists from Dutch local news media to explore how they value and establish this concept of proximity as a rhetorical device in their daily practice to argue the reliability and trust in their medium. This article offers a scholarly review of the literature and research on journalism education and fake news from an international and a local (Croatian) perspective. The purpose of this paper is to examine the connection between the education for journalists as a scholarly and academic discipline (as well as a teaching practice) and the issues caused by fake news in the digital age of mass media. Based on a comprehensive critical conceptual analysis of the body of knowledge available on the subject, it was determined that there is a diverse discussion about the status of journalism education regarding fake news. In that context, fake news has so far been internationally researched from several angles – curriculum content, journalism students, journalism and media studies, journalism practice, media audience, etc. When addressing the issue of education of journalists and fake news, three streams can be singled out. The first and most voluminous one refers to the systematic formal or additional education regarding media and information literacy. The next one refers to various changes related to the higher education system for the education of journalists, but without any concrete propositions for system reconstruction or upgrading. The last one advocates providing additional professional education to employed journalists. From the local perspective, even though only two articles suggest journalism education as a solution for the problems caused by fake news, based on thorough research it can be concluded that fake news and journalism education are not yet topics of interest among communication scholars in Croatia.

Most of the research tends to equate media analysis and media messages with journalism study and keeps on failing to provide data that allows for learning about the working conditions and the professional profile of the Argentinean journalists.

It highlights the contact areas between these two disciplines and sheds light on the findings and insights of both fields, thus informing researchers in their quest to develop journalism teaching curricula and training courses. A foreign desk editor (FDE) needs to cross borders forward and backward between cultures depending on translation from one culture to another. However, a journalist usually faces many linguistic and cultural problems to achieve this task. Thus, the paper can be viewed as an attempt to bridge the gap between theory and practice in teaching journalists international communication and domesticating world news stories for a local audience.

This article draws on ‘hyperlocal’ journalism scholarship to explore the civic functions of Australian local reporting in the digital age. Through place-based case studies based on interviews with media and civic leaders from three disparate communities, we find community groups are engaging with social media, particularly Facebook, to connect locals to services and community news. Community service providers are increasingly adept at using social media and, in many cases, prefer it to legacy media to gather, disseminate and exchange news. Concurrently, legacy media have lost newsroom resources that limit their practice of ‘shoe leather’ journalism and increase their dependence on official sources without independent verification. Yet, journalists are adapting to newsroom cutbacks by forming symbiotic relationships with non-media news providers, including local police. We find there are promising alternatives for fostering civic discourse and engagement through digital technologies despite less traditional local news and a reduced capacity for verified journalism.

This article addresses practices of constructive journalism in the local, postcolonial context of St. Maarten, an autonomous Dutch Caribbean island. Building on extensive fieldwork at print and online news media outlets on the island and 14 in-depth interviews with reporters, editors, and news bloggers, this article shows that constructive journalism practices are widespread in St. Maarten. These are based on ideals of contributing to economic development, engagement and belonging, and social stability. The fieldwork, however, also revealed skepticism toward constructive journalism practices because of local political, economic, and socio-cultural constraints. This skepticism parallels broader critiques on active and involved forms of journalism, throwing up questions about the meaning and feasibility of a ‘constructive’ role of journalists in young, postcolonial democracies. This article argues that local constraints on St. Maarten journalism undermine the normative underpinnings of constructive journalism and calls for more disruptive journalism to serve the local community.

The development of new media landscape, with the increasing use of digital/online media, presents the local journalism with new opportunities and challenges, both in the consumption as well as the production of the local media contents. This paper attempts to describe how the practices of journalism have been impacted by the growing use of new media in the local media industries, especially in the city of Surakarta. The use of new media in local journalism has created multi-media and multi-platform news production and distribution, more demand for new skills from the journalist – which in turn will demand new approach in the journalism education/training, and new ethical issues to be addressed.

Abstract Local journalism is often categorized by policymakers and academics as what neoclassical economists call a public good. The theory of public goods is used to describe journalism's nonrivalrous and nonexcludable characteristics and explain its positive externalities. Challenging this, I argue that the discourse of public goods is insufficient to fully capture the social democratic importance of local journalism. In its place, I call for a shift to thinking about local news as a merit good. Positioning local news as a merit good gives political economic leverage for increased regulatory support and encourages efforts to ensure the sustainability of local journalism.

Journalism hackathons are computationally based events in which participants create news product prototypes. In the ideal case, the gatherings are rooted in local community, enabling a wide set of institutional stakeholders (legacy journalists, hacker journalists, civic hackers, and the general public) to gather in conversation around key civic issues. This study explores how and to what extent journalism hackathons operate as a community-based laboratory for translating open data from practitioners to the public. Surfaced from in-depth interviews with event organizers encompassing nine countries, the findings illustrate that journalism hackathons are most successful when collaboration integrates civic organizations and community leaders.

Resumen
The article is a study of the key professional competencies of TV journalism graduates based on identifying the needs of employers of television media in the Republic of Buryatia, as well as professional standards that correspond to the professional activities of graduates. The study of this problem is caused by a number of reasons. Firstly, the technological, social, economic, and other transformations taking place in the entire media industry require rethinking of the professional competencies of graduate journalists formed by domestic universities. This is especially important for television journalism, since television still retains its status as the main source of information for the majority of Russian households. Secondly, the educational programs of higher educational institutions in our country implement a competency-based approach, and one of its priority tasks involves identifying the needs of the labor market. And finally, thirdly, the analysis of various sources of information showed insufficient study of the issue of professional training of graduates in the media industry, where the object of research is the requirements of employers to the professional competences of TV journalists. Close attention was paid to theoretical and empirical research in this area among local scientists. The method of empirical research was an expert survey. The experts were the editors-in-chief of the leading television media of the Republic of Buryatia. The methodology of the study of professional competencies of a television journalist was based on the professional standards of a television program host, correspondent and media editor approved by the Ministry of Labor and Social Relations of the Russian Federation. As a result of the study, a rating of professional competencies of a television journalist in the region under study was compiled. Key competencies were identified, as well as the competencies of “outsiders” on the level of television media editors, television presenters and media correspondents.

We find that Metric Media prioritizes the publication of state and national partisan content at the expense of local news, algorithmically generates most of its content, and fails to live up to its mission of democratizing and revitalizing local journalism.

This article explores self-censorship among journalists by drawing on Bourdieusian field theory and New Censorship Theory. The article analyses the experiences of local Crimean journalists in the period following Russia’s annexation of the peninsula, and during the rapid increase of Russian state control over local media. The analysis presented here draws on 70 biographical interviews conducted with local journalists who worked in Crimea for a period of at least 1 year between 2013 and 2017. In the first part of the article, I propose a Bourdieusian approach to self-censorship. In the second part of the article, I focus on illustrative examples of journalists who have risen to prominent positions in new post-2014 Crimean media, and detail three self-censorship practices: (1) governing ‘the other’ (a journalist engages in self-censorship only when it comes to ‘the ethnic other’: they refuse to practice self-censorship when working for Moscow-based Russian language media, but agree to self-censorship in local media targeting Crimean Tatars); (2) alerting the authorities (a journalist strikes deals with local politicians by not reporting on local infrastructural problems, instead directly asking the local government to fix them in return for favourable media coverage); and (3) self-censorship as patience (a journalist oversees positive reporting of local news and avoids negative topics as they wait patiently for Crimea’s growing pains to pass).

Resumen
This study examines power misuse in global news production by focusing on the role of “fixer.” Fixer is a local journalist who reports for global media on conflict-riddled areas or crisis situations. By interviewing forty fixers in Pakistan’s war-hit Pashtun Belt along the Afghanistan border, I examine the challenges they face in working with the global media’s visiting journalists before the start of the war on terror. Using Marx’s concept of proletarianization which is a process in which capital transforms a great mass of society into daily wage workers, I reveal how the local journalist, who works as fixer, is not only de-professionalized, but his precarity, due to living in a war zone, also forces him to misuse his local news traditions in working for the global media. I argue that fixers are far more than just assistants to global media outlets. Not only are they all practicing journalists in their own right, but, as locals, they also are geographically better placed to use their experience than those journalists who are coming from outside the conflict zone. Yet, this subsidiary role automatically erases this distinction leading to the real fixers’ de-skilling with consequences for the entire region.

Given the local and global interest in sport, sport journalism occupies a place of considerable power and influence. As in other forms of journalism, sport journalists are focused on topical issues, as well as personal and lifestyle-related stories. In the case of sport journalists, this is centred around the challenges and achievements facing athletes, coaches, organisations and all those involved with the sporting industries. Some sport journalists pursue a career as reporters, while others may be editors. In some countries, this type of journalism is regarded as highly specialised, requiring long-term development of skills and techniques. However, this approach is not generally reflected in Azerbaijan. More precisely, some experts believe that the sports media remains in the shadow of other fields of journalism. Nevertheless, it should be noted that, despite certain shortcomings, progress has been observed in the sporting media of Azerbaijan in recent years. There are a growing number of dedicated TV channels, magazines and online portals. As Azerbaijan gains a global reputation for sporting innovation, there is a growing need for this focus on innovation to be reflected in the field sport journalism. Put simply, Azerbaijan has become a worldwide sporting success story. And it needs world- class journalists able to tell that story.

Resumen
Political transition of post Soeharto's authoritarian regime has been deeply influenced by a decentralised model of governance, which affected to more serious attacks to the journalism works. The extra-judicial killing, physical violence, criminalising against journalism, and other attacks through formal judicial process or other forms, included impunity system, have shown uneasy situation for journalist at field or members of the press to perform journalistic works. Violence against journalists at field in decentralised Indonesia has been more influenced by the role of political-economy contestation at the local level, rather than the influence of situation and policies at national level. The law enforcement to protect journalist at works seems easily deniable and disregarded due to law system itself that does not give significance effect. The court has been used to collapsing media, silencing opposition, retaliating, and terrorising journalism works. My research shows that the most targeted medias for ULAP (unjustifiable lawsuits against press) or criminalisation have been connected to its reliability, professionalism journalistic or high quality of news. On the other side, impunity has prevailed and become a dominant situation that is not merely caused by ‘external media’ factors, but also showed an ‘internal media’ factors. Avoiding the judiciary becomes phenomena that does not always relate to distrust over the judicial system, but more on a ‘forced situation’. In my presentation, I will show how this situation articulates a new configuration of political imperium which combines of free press and dominant ownership over media, plus illiberal democracy which legally allows and lets predatory system to be supreme class in the governance and other state institutions.

Resumen
Regional and local media outlets have much more credibility than news organizations placed at a national level, according to polls. In a context fueled by the spread of disinformation, audiences seem to trust close journalistic sources, while national and international leaders are seen as polarized. However, local journalism has few resources for fact checking. In this context, we explore some of the strategies developed by local news organizations to avoid the proliferation of fake news. This study uses a multiple-case study on four local media outlets from similar media systems (Spain and Portugal) as a qualitative research strategy. Drawing upon in-depth interviews with local journalists and secondary data analysis, we examine how these media outlets deal with fake news, shedding light on internal fact-checking resources and other original strategies applied. From our interviews, their journalists are aware of the problem, asking for more training; whereas their organizations have different approaches to the digital platforms where most of disinformation circulates. These findings contribute to the scant literature on the role of the local field in disinformation, arguing that the social mission of local journalism may be a guarantee against fake news if their journalists are trained.

Resumen
COVID-19 is not just a health crisis. It has disrupted the economy of the entire world. Like most sectors, it has brought massive changes to the field of journalism. The objective of the article is to explore the impact of COVID-19 on journalism in Bangladesh. This study follows a qualitative research methodology based on secondary sources. The study’s findings have shown that the pandemic situation has strongly affected the journalism industry and their work in Bangladesh. Many local newspapers have been severely affected by losses in advertising revenues from coronavirus. Advertisements have gone down by 70-80% despite an increase in television and online media viewership. COVID-19 has infected 1,010 journalists from 191 media houses in Bangladesh. Among these, 942 people have been recovered and 35 journalists passed away till November 15. Prior to COVID-19, few journalists were in financial crisis due to non-receipt of regular salary allowance; this crisis has become more evident during the pandemic situation. At least 600 journalists have been discharged and many journalists have been given compulsory leave without pay. Despite all the hurdles, Bangladeshi journalists continued to contribute to information gathering, dissemination and raising public awareness.

Resumen
Purpose – More journalists died in Syria during 2013 than in any other country experiencing conflict. This statistic raises concerns about the psychological wellbeing of journalists covering the internecine violence. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach – The study sample was made up of 59 western journalists currently covering the Syrian conflict. To place these results in the broader context of war journalism previously collected data from a group of 84 journalists who had reported the war in Iraq were used as a control sample. Outcome measures included indices of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Impact of Event Scale-revised) and psychological distress (General Health Questionnaire-28 item version (GHQ-28)). Findings – Compared to journalists who covered the Iraq war, the journalists working in Syria were more likely to be female (p=0.007), single (p=0.018), freelance (p=0.0001) and had worked fewer years as a journalist (p=0.012). They were more depressed according to the GHQ-28 (p=0.001) and endorsed more individual symptoms of depression including worthlessness (p=0.012), helplessness (p=0.02) and suicidal intent (p=0.003). A linear regression analysis revealed that the group differences in depression data could not be accounted for by demographic factors. Research limitations/implications – An absence of structured interviews. Results not applicable to local Syrian journalists. Practical implications – Western journalists covering Syrian appear to be particularly vulnerable to the development of depression. Journalists and the news organizations that employ them need to be cognizant of data such as these. Given that depression is treatable, there needs to be a mechanism in place to detect and treat those in need. Originality/value – This is the first study that highlights the emotional toll on western journalists covering the Syrian conflict.

Resumen
Media ethics in the Pacific Islands varies considerably among nations in practice, as shown in scholarship. This case study of 16 Marshall Islands journalists aims to provide evidence of ethical decision-making in practice in one Pacific Island nation, and demonstrate the intersection of imported journalism values and local culture. It builds on survey work of Pacific Island journalists’ roles by Singh and Hanusch (2021), the Worlds of Journalism study by Hanitzsch et al. (2019) and works by Robie (2004, 2014 and 2019). Responses from 16 journalists in the Republic of the Marshall Islands who made ethical decisions during a journalism workshop facilitated by the newly established Pacific Media Institute at the College of Marshall Islands in June 2022 were analysed. First, the participants identified ethical conflicts in carrying out their professional duties. Next, they applied standard ethics codes from democracies (absolutism), to local scenarios. Discussion centered on how to address the core value of independence because of dominance of the church and the strongly influential chiefly system in RMI. Personal relationships were also factored in their ethical decision-making because the journalists considered the perspectives of all stakeholders in reporting on Marshallese culture and society. They were keenly aware of the consequences of their reporting on their community. They offered unique, locally derived solutions from different perspectives. They often exhibited an ‘ethics of care', prioritising humanity and sometimes societal harmony.

Review of Can we talk about the news? A discussion of media criticism in New Zealand, by Jane Dunbar. NZ Journalism Monographs, No3, Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, University of Canterbury. In this monograph, Jane Dunbar interviews news journalists and media commentators about the quality of media criticism in New Zealand. This is certainly a pertinent theme for research. Dunbar's interviewees point out that local scrutiny of the news media is difficult to sustain. Thus, journalists within coporate media are unlikely to comment upon ownership patterns, within all media organisations unbiquitous advertising contracts available news space.

Resumen
Journalists and media researchers globally are increasingly expressing concern about trends in the news media industry which would appear to suggest a dire future for quality journalism, and thus democracy, in many developed democratic nations. The US State of the News Media report, now produced annually, regularly reports concerns by journalists and editors—and those who study them—about decreasing investment by news corporations in quality journalism (Pew Centre, 2005; 2006; 2007; 2008). The Australian Press Council has presented its own study to mirror that of the Pew Centre in an effort to report on the Australian context (APC, 2006; 2007). The author has, with colleagues from Griffith University, conducted research into the Australian community broadcasting sector for the past nine years. The research conducted since 1999 has been broad but this article will focus on one element of the research—the news and information services of community broadcasting. The community broadcasting sector is worthy of close investigation, because it is one of the few areas of the Australian media landscape that continues to grow. Importantly, quantitative research into the community sector indicates that 57 percent of the Australian population tune in at least monthly to a community radio station—and more than one in four listen at least weekly (McNair Ingenuity, 2008, p. 4). This article investigates the nature of community news offered by the Australian community radio sector through the perspectives of journalists and producers who deliver the news, and the audiences who access it.
