Resumen

Exchange rate fluctuations generate high risk for the insurance companies in Egypt, such as bankruptcy and liquidity. This study aims to measure the foreign exchange exposure (FXE) for the life insurance companies in Egypt during the period from 2000-2016. After that, the study measures the determinants of this exposure. The problem of the study is concerned with the fluctuations of the foreign exchange rate in Egypt, which have a great effect on the financial performance. Following prior studies (e.g. Lee, 2011 and Ampomah 2012), this study uses Jorian model to measure the FXE. The results of the study show that the life insurance companies in Egypt were significant to the FXE; the results are robust to the choice of model design.

Resumen

The early organic movement was closely connected with the crusade for monetary reform, since it was felt that Britain's agriculture and rural life could not be revived without challenging the vested interests of banking and the import-export trades. This paper focuses on the work of the Economic Reform Club and Institute (ERCI) from the 1930s to the 1950s, revealing the major part played in its activities by leading organicists. First, it identifies various strands that were drawn together in the ERCI: the monetary reform theories of Kitson and Douglas; the ideas of the Irish agricultural organiser ‘AE’ (G. W. Russell); and Montague Fordham's Rural Reconstruction Association. It then looks at various speeches and conferences arranged by the ERCI, particularly during the Second World War, to demonstrate the importance given to the organic school's proposed agricultural policies. In the post-war years Jorian Jenks, who also edited the Soil Association journal, ran the ERCI's journal Rural Economy as another platform for organic ideas, arguing for a conception of ‘economy’ based on natural resources rather than money. The paper concludes by suggesting that the anti-semitism sometimes found in early organic writings may be attributable to the organicists' dislike of the international finance system.

Here, the taxonomy of the genus Rhagastis Rothschild & Jordan, 1903 (Lepidoptera, Sphingidae, Macroglossinae, Macroglossini) from China is revised based on differences in wing morphology, male and female genitalia, and the phylogenetic relationship of the DNA barcodes. Subspecies of Rhagastis albomarginatus (Rothschild, 1894) and R. castor (Walker, 1856) are treated as “good” species, namely Rhagastis dichroae Mell, 1922 stat. nov.; R. everetti Rothschild & Jordan, 1903 stat. nov.; R. aurifera (Butler, 1875) stat. rev.; R. chinensis Mell, 1922 stat. nov.; R. formosana Clark, 1925 stat. nov.; and R. jordani Oberthür, 1904 stat. rev. The distribution maps, biological notes, and ecological records of the genus Rhagastis Rothschild & Jordan, 1903 from China are given, and a species inventory of genus Rhagastis in the world is also included.

A review and cladistic analysis of the genus Ptychoderes Schoenherr, 1823 is presented. The genus and the following seventeen known species are redescribed: P. nebulosus (Olivier, 1795) (type species), P. elongatus (Germar, 1824), P. viridanus Boheman, 1833, P. virgatus Fåhraeus, 1839, P. obsoletus Jekel, 1855, P. depressus Jekel, 1855, P. mixtus Jekel, 1855, P. callosus Jekel, 1855, P. antiquus Jekel, 1855, P. brevis Jordan, 1894, P. longicollis Jordan, 1894, P. bivittatus Jordan, 1894, P. rugicollis Jordan, 1895, P. jordani Frieser, 1959, P. crustatus Frieser, 1988, P. magnus Mermudes & Napp, 2004 and P. jekeli Mermudes & Napp, 2004. New synonyms are proposed: Ptychoderes nebulosus (Olivier, 1795) = Ptychoderes tricostifrons Fåhraeus, 1839 syn. nov. = Ptychoderes columbianus Jekel, 1855 syn. nov.; and Ptychoderes antiquus Jekel, 1855 = Ptychoderes affinis Jordan, 1894 syn. nov. A key to species and maps of their geographical distribution are provided. The cladistic analysis with 24 taxa and 50 characters from body vestiture, external morphology, wing venation, male and female terminalia and rectal loop, resulted in a single cladogram showing, for the first time, a hypothesis of phylogenetic relationship among genera of Anthribinae. The analysis included the seventeen species of Ptychoderes, as defined in the taxonomic review, along with the type species of the genera presently considered as belonging to Ptychoderini Jekel, 1855: Cerambyrhynchus schoenherri Montrouzier, 1855, Phloepemon acuticornis (Fabricius), Phloeotragus heros (Fabricius), Tribotropis prasinata (Fåhraeus, 1839), Hypselotropis annulicornis (Fåhraeus, 1839) and Unanthribus maximus Mermudes, 2003. A hypothesis of the phylogenetic relationships among the Neotropical genera of Ptychoderini is presented in parenthetical notation: ((Tribotropis + Hypselotropis) (Unanthribus + Ptychoderes)). The monophyly of Ptychoderes is supported by 14 synapomorphies and its interrelationships are as follows: ((P. crustatus (P. brevis + P. jekeli)) ((P. longicollis (P. jordani (P. obsoletus+P. magnus) (P. depressus+P. virgatus))) (P. mixtus (P. bivittatus ((P. callosus+P. rugicollis) (P. viridanus (P. antiquus (P. elongatus+P. nebulosus)))))))).

Resumen

The results of the analysis revealed that factors, such as the level of understanding risk management, risk assessment and analysis, risk control, and monitoring, feature more prominently in Malaysian Islamic Banks than in their Jordanian counterparts. However, Jordans IBs are ahead in terms of the level of risk management practices. Both countries are similar in their risk identification. It is also found that Islamic Banks in Malaysia and Jordan are somewhat reasonably efficient in managing risk where risk assessment and analysis (RAA), and risk control and monitoring (RCM) are the most influencing variables in RMPs in Malaysia; whilst understanding risk management (URM) and risk control and monitoring (RCM) are good predictors of RMPs in Jordan.

Theatre as the confluence of the collective and private trauma in Erigon by Jordan PlevnešThe text problematizes the concept of national history and trauma in the play Erigon, written by the contemporary Macedonian playwright Jordan Plevneš. The starting point of the analysis are some peculiarities of Plevneš’s poetics and of the theatrical conceptions of Antonin Artaud that are central to Erigon as well as the problem of the representation (and performance) of history in drama and theatre. In Erigon one can recognize the critique of eurocentrism and the European centres of power along with their influence on the formation of political and historical processes in Macedonia and the Balkans in general. The main question concerns the societal role of political theatre and its power. Teatr jako ujście zbiorowej i prywatnej traumy w Erigonie Jordana PlevnešaTekst prezentuje koncepcję historii narodowej i traumy w sztuce Erigon autorstwa współczesnego macedońskiego dramatopisarza – Jordana Plevneša. Punktem wyjścia do analizy są cechy charakterystyczne poetyki Autora oraz koncepcje teatralne Antonina Artauda, które zajmują w Erigonie miejsce centralne, podobnie jak problem reprezentacji (i performansu) historii w dramacie i teatrze. W Erigonie rozpoznać można krytykę eurocentryzmu obecnego w politycznych i historycznych procesach w Macedonii, a także ogólnie na Bałkanach. Resumen

Despite the wide distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, refugees remain last in line for the intake of vaccines. Syrian refugees in Jordan reach up to 700,000 registered and almost up to 700,000 unregistered refugees. This study aims to assess the willingness of Syrian refugees in Jordan to take the COVID-19 vaccine. Participants in the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan were invited through social media to complete the survey between January and March 2022. A total of 230 refugees participated in our study, with almost half the participants of male gender. The majority of the participants had secondary school as their highest education level and were unemployed, being below the social poverty line. Interestingly, Syrian refugees showed a high vaccine acceptance rate, as 89.6% were willing to take the vaccine. Moreover, they showed high knowledge regarding the vaccine, the disease, and the virus. Our findings highlight the importance of knowledge and awareness of the COVID-19 vaccine to increase the acceptance rate. This is very important as refugees represent a vulnerable group to infection and complications and require close attention, especially with their significant numbers in Jordon and challenges of providing adequate vaccine supplies at their camps. We hope that, with proper dissemination of knowledge and awareness and with easy accessibility to the vaccines, it will ensure high immunization to reach herd immunity in Jordan.

Resumen

Artykuł w całości nawiązuje do dotąd niepublikowanej korespondencji Tadeusza Czeżowskiego z emigracyjnym filozofem Zbigniewem Jordanem zachowanej w rękopisach w zasobach archiwalnych Uniwersytetu Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu. Ich korespondencja trwała blisko 40 lat i jest dowodem, że nawet przymusowa powojenna emigracja nie zrywała więzów łączących filozofów związanych ze szkołą lwowsko-warszawską. Choć Czeżowski i Jordan należeli do dwóch różnych pokoleń tej szkoły, to wspólne zainteresowania naukowe i podobne zapatrywania polityczne spowodowały, że ich więź, choć tylko korespondencyjna, była w pewnym sensie wyjątkowa, bo nawet ingerencje komunistycznej cenzury nie były w stanie wpłynąć na jej kształt. Dzięki niej Jordan wykazywał się doskonałą orientacją w dorobku samego Czeżowskiego jak i pozostałych przedstawicieli szkoły lwowsko-warszawskiej. To właśnie głównie dzięki tej korespondencji mógł pełnić rolę „ambasadora” polskiej filozofii w świecie i zarazem pierwszego historyka szkoły lwowsko-warszawskiej. Przypomnieniu roli obu filozofów w dziejach polskiej filozofii sprzyja zwłaszcza przypadająca w tym roku 40-ta rocznica śmierci Czeżowskiego oraz 110 rocznica urodzin Jordana.

El Dr. Jordan, Rector de la Universidad de Indiana, durante seis años, y primero de la de Stanford, durante unos veinticinco, con más de cincuenta libros y 1.000 artículos publicados, no necesita de presentación entre los botánicos y los zoólogos especialistas en ictiología. Lo que llama la atención es que mereciera la atención del traductor castellano no por esos estudios, sino por dos obras: La cosecha humana (1912) y El imperio invisible (1914); en la primera Jordan estudia el efecto de las guerras en la raza humana y en la segunda, el empobrecimiento de los pueblos por causa de los enfrentamientos bélicos. No ha de olvidarse que, precisamente en aquel 1914, comenzó la sangrienta I Guerra Mundial. El traductor de ambos libros fue un prolífico hispanista: Aurelio Macedonio Espinosa, fundador de los estudios hispánicos en la Universidad de Stanford. En el presente estudio intentamos abordar el por qué y el para qué de estas dos traducciones, cercanas a la aparición de los textos originales y referencias casi únicas del "Dr. Jordán" en España y América Latina

English This article reports on a collaboration between Jordan and the UK to develop social work as a profession in Jordan. Reflecting on some of the less anticipated outcomes of the project and the mutual benefits of engaging with cross-cultural alliances, the article is contextualized within debates around post-colonialism and the indigenization of practice. Resumen

Na przełomie XVI i XVI w. jurysdykcją diecezji krakowskiej objęto powiat Lubowla na Spiszu, krainę na wschód od Tatr, należącą od 1412 r. do Polski. Na tym obszarze znajdowało się sześć parafii, wszystkie założone w średniowieczu, zostały odzyskane od luteranów w pierwszych latach XVII w. i zwrócone katolikom. W 1643 r. parafie spiskie zebrano w dekanat, który został przyłączony do archidekanatu sądeckiego. Jedyna wizytacja dekanatu spiskiego miała miejsce w 1728 roku i przeprowadził ją arcydziekan Józef Jordan. W artykule przedstawiono strukturę cerkiewną i życie religijne dekanatu spiskiego w drugiej ćwierci XVIII w., jak wynika z protokołu wizytacji arcydziekana Jordana.

Resumen

Autor prezentuje mało znane fakty z historii polskiej nauki świadczące o tym, że przedstawiciele polskiej emigracji powojennej mieli bardzo dobre rozeznanie o sytuacji w nauce krajowej. W filozofii przykładem tego były kontakty Zbigniewa Jordana (1911–1977) z przedstawicielami filozofii pracującymi w kraju. Jordan przez wiele lat utrzymywał systematyczne kontakty z około czterdziestoma osobami, stanowiącymi elitę polskiej powojennej filozofii i socjologii. Do grona jego znajomych i korespondentów należeli m.in. Jan Łukasiewicz, ks. Józef Pastuszka, Tadeusz Czeżowski, Maria i Stanisław Ossowscy, Tadeusz i Janina Kotarbińscy, Adam Schaff, Leszek Kołakowski, Jan Szczepański, Andrzej Grzegorczyk, a także przedstawiciele polskiej emigracji pracujący na uczelniach zachodnich. Dzięki tym kontaktom potrafił zrealizować naraz dwa cele. Po pierwsze, popularyzował godne upamiętnienia osiągnięcia nauki polskiej, dzięki czemu jego starania zapewniały ścisły związek między nauką krajową a światową. Po drugie, zapewniał historyczna ciągłość nauki polskiej, której nie przerwało nawet wprowadzenie komunistycznych porządków w kraju, które sprowadzały się do próby odrzucenia całej dotychczasowej tradycji. Autor stoi na stanowisku, że nauka stanowi najważniejszą część kultury i z tej racji dokonania Jordana powinny zostać spopularyzowane w całym środowisku nauki w Polsce jako przykład, którym winni kierować się jej młodzi adepci, koncentrujący się wyłącznie na karierze w zagranicznych instytucjach naukowych.

Resumen

Jordan D-bialgebras were introduced by Zhelyabin. In this paper, we use a new approach to study Jordan D-bialgebras by a new notion of the dual representation of the regular representation of a Jordan algebra. Motivated by the essential connection between Lie bialgebras and Manin triples, we give an explicit proof of the equivalence between Jordan D-bialgebras and a class of special Jordan–Manin triples called double constructions of pseudo-euclidean Jordan algebras. We also show that a Jordan D-bialgebra leads to the Jordan Yang–Baxter equation under the coboundary condition and an antisymmetric nondegenerate solution of the Jordan Yang–Baxter equation corresponds to an antisymmetric bilinear form, which we call a Jordan symplectic form on Jordan algebras. Furthermore, there exists a new algebra structure called pre-Jordan algebra on Jordan algebras with a Jordan symplectic form.

Resumen

The purpose of this paper is to introduce and study a notion of pre-Jordan algebra. Pre-Jordan algebras are regarded as the underlying algebraic structures of the Jordan algebras with a nondegenerate symplectic form. They are the algebraic structures behind the Jordan Yang-Baxter equation and Rota-Baxter operators in terms of $\mathcal{O}$-operators of Jordan algebras introduced in this paper. Pre-Jordan algebras are analogues for Jordan algebras of pre-Lie algebras and fit into a bigger framework with a close relationship with dendriform algebras. The anticommutator of a pre-Jordan algebra is a Jordan algebra and the left multiplication operators give a representation of the Jordan algebra, which is the beauty of such a structure. Furthermore, we introduce a notion of $\mathcal{O}$-operator of a pre-Jordan algebra which gives an analogue of the classical Yang-Baxter equation in a pre-Jordan algebra.

Resumen

The notion of quasi-Jordan algebras was originally proposed by R. Velasquez and R. Fellipe. Later, M. R. Bremner provided a modification called K-B quasi-Jordan algebras; these include all Jordan algebras and all dialgebras, and hence all associative algebras. Any quasi-Jordan algebra is special if it is isomorphic to a quasi-Jordan subalgebra of some dialgebras. Keeping in view the pivotal role of homotopes in the theory of Jordan algebras, we begin a study of the homotopes of quasi-Jordan algebras; among other related results, we show that the homotopes of any special quasi-Jordan algebra are special quasi-Jordan algebras and that the homotopes of a K-B quasi-Jordan algebra is a quasi-Jordan algebra. In the sequel, we also give some open problems.
