This contribution examines the relationship between vernacular translations of the sixteenth century and the history of the epic poetry genre in the seventeenth. To this end, it systematically analyses the Early Modern High German translations of Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey and identifies the various reasons why translators decided in favour of prose or verse. Of all the protagonists of the German reception of antiquity – including such figures as Jörg Wickram, Simon Schaidenreisser, and Johannes Baptista Rexius – it is the Meistersinger Johannes Spreng of Augsburg who most consistently chose rhyme for his translations of the classical epics into German.

Resumen
Abstract Isolated, yet at the same time, in an environment that is hostile to them, the four characters Jörg Wickram imagines in his novel ›Gabriotto und Reinhart‹ are alone together, as the two doomed couples are all also bound to each other in friendship. The construction of paradoxes, calculated primarily for effect, appears to be one of the novels controlled narrative devices. Much like the narratological strategies of intensification, exaggeration and repetition, they are controlled artifices designed for impact, and well-thought-out gambits on the part of the author which he uses, above all, to continue and intensify the tradition of medieval storytelling, and less frequently to counterpose an alternative understanding. Time and again the author makes use of the potential of widespread literary concepts to demonstrate that the love described in the novel is unparalleled.

Resumen
Jörg Wickram’s novel Der Goldtfaden deals with courtly communication in the form of an unusual constellation of its participants. It is a complex system of norms that is binding for all members of the court and becomes problematic if an outsider joins the act. Communication situations are presented in a variety of media, some of which succeed through fortunate coincidence, while others fail due to existing conventions and their disregard. Above all, the figure of the fool plays an essential role, which is constitutive for the entire text.

Resumen
This article accepts the challenge to reflect on the cultural history of music as a transcultural and universally human phenomenon, particularly in the medieval context. To what extent has music played the same or at least similar function in endless cultural contexts all over the world from the past to the present? We know for sure that music has always been present at all age groups, in all ethnic groups, among all genders, and throughout time. There have always been local, ethnic types of music (folklore), and universally accepted manifestations of music (esp. classical music). The emphasis here rests, after an extensive study of music in global cultural-historical terms, on comments about music in medieval philosophy, mysticism, and literature because here we discover fundamental notions about music being the medium to connect the individual with the cosmic harmony, hence with the divine. In literary texts, above all, music was identified as the critical expression of identity, love, and religion. Keywords: Transcultural music; classic music; music in cultural-historical terms; The Beatles; Martianus Capella; Boethius; Gottfried von Strassburg; Jörg Wickram; Hermann Hesse

The thesis is composed of three parts: the first one reflects theoretical questions concerning the connection between myth and literature. It also exposes the methodological concept of the thesis. An excursus analyses the metaphor of the tissue and reads it as a metaphor for the connection between myth and literature. This part also shows the parallels between the lai of the Laüstic and some of the mythic patterns of the myth of Philomel like the role of the nightingale, the topic of language and silence, or the woven communication. The second part is composed of four subchapters, which point out different texts who are all retelling the myth of Philomel in their own different way. The French and German text versions were written between the second half of the 12th century (by authors like Marie de France, Chrétien de Troyes, Albrecht von Halberstadt) and 1545 (by Georg Wickram). The third part of the thesis tries to show that four different mythic patterns are used by all authors, nevertheless of the many variations their texts show

Alessandrini, J. L. "Jörg Wickram's Rollwagenbüchlein : a study of laughter and narrative". Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2014. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1443882/.

Texto completo
Resumen
The phenomenon of laughter in early modern narrative texts is central to literary and cultural history. Particularly rich sources of laughter are early modern collections of German secular short prose narrative, known as ‘Schwanksammlungen’ (1555-1565) that were read for entertainment and pleasure. Such comic (anecdotal) tales, narrated in ways that appear to reproduce the language used by ordinary people, offer literary historians a deeper insight into contemporary understanding and appreciation of laughter in literature. This thesis offers a fresh reading of the motif of laughter in Jörg Wickram’s Rollwagenbüchlein (1555), which may be regarded as the epitome of this type of literature. This study considers laughter as an important key for interpreting the Rollwagenbüchlein, and explores what a close reading of scenes featuring laughter can tell us about Wickram’s narrative technique in his collection. It principally investigates to what extent the inclusion of explicit references to laughter adds to the Rollwagenbüchlein in ways that exceed comic functionality, on the basis of which a more nuanced reading of the text as a whole may be undertaken. It examines the extent to which this collection evinces a broader thematic interest in laughter and related phenomena – which provides further insight into early modern cultures of laughter. The main contention of this thesis is that Wickram capitalises on the social and emotional significance of laughter in order to flesh out his portrayal of everyday life, thereby also illuminating ideas about laughter that are irreducible to norms. Laughter is read as a revealing expression of urban mores and mentalities in mid-sixteenth-century Germany. Such a reading allows us to trace how burgher attitudes to laughter helped to shape German early modern conceptions of society, psychology, and life in general. This study falls into two parts, the first of which tackles the Rollwagenbüchlein’s portrayal of laughter’s social significance (chapters two ‘laughter and social processes’ and three ‘laughter and religious practice’), and the second - its emotional-psychological dimension (chapters four ‘laughter and emotionality’ and five ‘laughter and rationality’).
