Brugidou, Jeremie. "Vers une écologie de l’apparition : le mystère de la genèse des formes à partir d’une Annonciation bioluminescente chez James Cameron". Electronic Thesis or Diss., Paris 8, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020PA080016.
Triggered by an aesthetic motif in James Cameron’s filmography, this thesis aims to describe light as a phenomenon shared beyond the human. An Annunciation unfolds in Cameron’s work, manifested through a luminous singularity: bioluminescence. Following the tracks of this uncanny light throughout several films, I consider the luminous event of the Annunciation as a modality of appearing in its bio-logical sense, i.e. in the sense of that which presides to the dynamic and inventiveness of the living in its relational dimensions. I name this dimension, a community of obsession. As far as light is concerned, this obsession is tuned to a photogenic appeal in the living, to which is tied photosensitivity in all its forms. Figurability in aesthetics likewise morphogenesis in biology, describe the multiple embodiments resulting from this bind. I name figurative ecology the trans-specific community thus created; I name figural ethology the observation method enabling to describe the obsessional dimension. I hence consider cinema in its phylogenetic perspective, in other words, throughout the long story of the interaction between life, light and forms. This thesis offers a different perspective on James Cameron’s work, as well as a biophotopolitical approach to multispecies ethnography and a new theory of communication based not on signal and noise, but on figures and grain

Edward James (1907-84) is a little-known british poet whose late poetry, composed between 1939 and 1984, constitutes the subject of this study. Based on a critical approach to the poet's literary production, hardly available at present, and of a huge unpublished correspondance with many of the international avan-garde leading figures, this research mainly aims at defining the kind of relation between writing and representation thatin a poet usually thought of as surrealist. The thematic approach to the texts brings about what may be called the poetics of kitsch in which an inner trend suggests a singular relationship towards reality, thus providing an exciting alternative to post-modernity : from a political point of view, a personal version of anarchism; at a more individual level, a series of reinterpretations of raw perceptions and, dealing with a poet, a questioning of the artistic act, willingly or not inscribed in time

As a preliminary, the analysis of three founding works of fiction in the fantastic genre ("rip van winkle ;" "the legend of sleepy hollow," by washington ir ving, 1819, and "peter rugg : the missing man" by william austin, 1824) allows us to ponder on the fantastic aspect of the origin of the universe and the origins of the fantastic genre in the americas, and the concurrence of history and the supernatural. The short stories of the american-henry james (1843-1916)-and the argentinian-cortazar (1914-1984)-illustrate that the fantastic genre allows the appearance of the unnameable in the text, and this process becomes the central, hidden plot of the text. Thes stories evoke a confrontation with the "being here" which is beyond words : the "thing" happens-obviously withou any reason-and this the text cannot capture, because of its uniqueness, because it is so real. The fantastic story paradoxically founded on the impossibility of its own achievement pushes realistic writing into its last strongholds there is no mystery within the fantastic story, there is the mystery of the fantastic story : the gross absence of the r and sensations that cannot be expressed in words. When this emptiness is felt as fulfilment, it is "the abyss," the "plunge into chaos" or the "spongy feeling" (cortazar), an "oceanic feeling" (r. Rolland, s. Freud). There is n absolute unifying-monothetic-theory of the fantastic genre, but a chaotic theory of the uniqueness, an idiographic theory. With james, the jungle tiger, "thing" that has been retrieved from the abyss, the ghost, would be part o some mystery : a ritual and dramatic change of the state of mind of the character resulting from an unformulable

This is a comparative study of the concepts of self as formulated by the psychologists William James (1842-1910) and B. F. Skinner (1904-1990). The source for James concept was the chapter The consciousness of self of his book The principles of psychology, from which I described the constituents of the empirical self, the authors reflection on the pure ego, and the feelings, emotions and actions of the self. In Skinners case, the sources were the section The individual as a whole of the book Science and human behavior, the chapter Thinking of the book Verbal behavior, and a few other articles; I discussed the concepts of self-control and thinking according to radical behaviorism in order to define the self as an organized system of responses. Then I translated James concept of self into references to contingencies of reinforcement: the material self in terms of phylogenesis and ontogenesis, the social self in terms of stimulus control, the spiritual self in terms of a repertoire shaped by the verbal community, and the pure ego in terms of the three levels of selection of human behavior. I proposed possible influences of James on Skinner, based on relations between their psychological theories: the conception of multiple selves, the rejection of the conscience as a substance, the affinity of radical empiricism and radical behaviorism, and the idea of evolution of culture. I reflected on the attitude of James and Skinner towards relating empirical data to general principles, on their classification of psychology among the natural sciences, and on the reasons for a supposed death of Jamesian psychology and radical behaviorism. Finally, I suggested some questions to further investigations.

This dissertation focuses on the study of the six novels published by James Arthur Baldwin and what is revealed in the texts about the economy of the paternal function, following a critical approach based upon the psychoanalytical writings and concepts of Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan. The first part, dedicated to the study of the family romances and the dialectic of the Oedipus complex, explores the oedipal links which govern the family configurations in the various novels and focuses first on the desire of the mother then, on the position of the father and, eventually, deals with the feminine response to the Oedipus complex. In the second part, the perverse relation which the subject enjoys with desire and law is studied. The subject, captured by the imaginary, is alienated in relation to the other : the other in the mirror, the brother, the homosexual lover and the other race. . .

Joyce's u stands central in the movement of literary renovation which takes place after W. W. I. The historical process of u's reception was staggered over months by the serialized pre-publication of the novel in the U. S. And in England between 1918 and 1921 and then by the release of the novel in 1 volume in Paris in 1922. This process successively, and sometimes simultaneously, implied 3 cultural areas which are distinct but inter connected in parts. Through the study of u's reception, and subsequently of the French version (1929), mutation and a certain reluctance appear: these phenomena operate within the English, the American and the French fields, over a period which witnesses the emergence of a new aesthetics that was later on coined "modernism". The comparative bias of the doctorate aims at explaining the internationalization of literary relationships, as well as at understanding the gaps between the cultural fields taken into account. Eventually, complementary results can be drawn : according to the "aesthetics of reception" theory and to hermeneutics, the readings produced as a critical answer to u betray the difficulty to appropriate Joyce’s text, in spite of early interpretations and "critical orthodoxies" such as Pound's (1914-1922) and Larbaud's (19211922) ; in a more historical perspective, it appears that u played a vital part in the constitution of a modernist self-consciousness in the Anglo-Saxon literary world, while this function didn't operate as decisively in France, where the integration of Joyce’s novel

@Creator of an immense work, each of whose opus constituded an artistic revolution, James Joyce (1882-1941) has left to Anglo-Irish writers a formidable legacy. Leaving behind the XIXth century novel, Joyce irrevocably altered the modern literary map. Representing that moment of transition for contemporary sensitivity known as modernity, Joyce's work undeniably was and still is a burden to generations of Irish writers. A comparative study of O'Brien, McGahern and Banville's novels and short stories can lead to a fruitful historical analysis of Joyce's influence on XXth century Irish literature. Each of those three writers has indeed benefited, consciously or inconsciously, from the literary lessons of the " master ", whose heritage, possibly a source of inhibitions, is now possible to measure. Altohgh Flann O'Brien (1911-1966) was hailed as the author of several masterpieces, the general critical reception derided the Joycean undertones of his work, and tended, not undully so, to condemn his work as inferior imitation. As a matter of fact, O'Brien remains as the first Irish metafictionalistalong with Joyce. Less than two generations later, John McGaherrn (1932-)appeared on the Irish literary scene. Undeniably marked by Joyce's early work, whose realistic and symbolical influence can be perceived in most of his short stories and some of his novels, McGahern only reluctantly admits his indebtedness to the author of Dubliners. And despite the poetic originality of his writings, he continues to write as though James Joyce had never existed. As for John Banville (1945-), who seems to have inherited Joyce's sense of experimentation as well as his capacity to recycle the work of his predecessors, he has obviously started to pave the way to new forms of literature -maybe for the first time since Ulysses. With Banville, the Irish literary community may be able to turn over the leaf Joyce wrote nearly a century ago

This thesis intends to contribute to the understanding of Henry James s representation of North-American national culture in his late works. In 1907, he publishes, under the title The American Scene, the travel reports of his visit to United States. The analysis of this array of reports, in the context of the American literary tradition of Nineteenth Century, helps to reconstitute the image constructed by the author of the individual-society relation, in American culture, in the turn of Nineteenth to Twentieth Century. From 1820s onwards, North-American essayists, fictionists, ministers, poets and theologians began to identify the Judeo-Christian etiologic myth with the founding myth of American democracy. It thus began an intellectual dispute between those who intended to associate American identity to the innocence of Adam s before the Fall and those who referred it to the image of the fallen Adam. This dispute s heritage and the literary legacy of writers as Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville and Henry James Sr., combined with his European cultural experience, ground Henry James s allegorized version of the American Adam s myth, which constitutes the narrative of his last published novel, The Golden Bowl. The conjoined analysis of this novel and the travel reports makes possible to understand the symbolic relevance, in James s work, of the categories of Fall and sin to the moral growth and the development of aesthetic sensibility in the individuals.

Pragmatism, as a philosophical movement, and anarchism, as a political one, seem to be connected by two seemingly complementary approaches: pragmatism is often considered as politically neutral, while anarchism as philosophically indifferent. The aim of our study is to examine this double neutrality and, following our interrogation, namely « is pragmatism an anarchist philosophy? », to evaluate the possibility of a positive answer, the political consequences of the one and the philosophical consequences of the other, and also the causes of their alleged complementary indifference, inspiring us the idea of a commun architecture. First, we try to locate this architecture in the philosophy of James and Dewey, focusing on the relationship of pragmatism to democracy. Thus, we point out the main features of a philosophy of experience fitting the demands - in a pragmatic perspective - of democracy. For it is only experience that allows democracy to see its ethical dimension - very present among pragmatists - become political. Second, we examine the articulation of what we can call anarchist doxa with the philosophical assertions that form, according to James and Dewey, the philosophy of experience. We focus, in particular, on the thought of Proudhon and Bakunin, whose kinship seems to carry the same anti-absolutist spirit that forms the critical dimension of the philosophy of experience

This dissertation offers a reading of the prefaces of Walter Scott, Henry James, Joseph Conrad and other authors, based on a systemic approach and on various theories of communication. Chapter 1 sums up the main existing theories on prefaces and shows their relevance to the present research. Chapter 2 describes the main elements in the schemes of communication of the prefaces : title, author, reader, locus. Chapter 3 shows how those elements form organised systems, both within each preface and regarding intertextual connections. Chapter 4 explores some of the functions of communication brought about accordingly by each author : negotiation, lecture to the reader, conversation, representation of the self. Finally, chapter 5 deals with the semantic effects of the prefaces

Within the French financial system, the singularity of the "institutions generating surplus" is to be observed. As far as their number is concerned, these institutions could be a side phenomenon; however they actually do have weight, in the financial system, as far as their dimension is concerned. By their liquid reserves, these institutions form a part of the supply, which quicken the financial markets and particularly the monetary one. We are mainly devoted to the study of the place and investment behavior excess liquidities generating bodies. The characteristics of debt economy which we approached in part one outline the contains faced by the excess liquidates generating bodies. The place of the banque de France, interventions of which are necessary, as so far as "lender without appeal constrained", is determining for the role of excess liquidities generating bodies on the monetary market. The funds employments, on the market, by these bodies aim at a financial remuneration in order to improve, first, their operating statement. So the tendered quantities have not great consequences on the equilibrium conditions on the money market, especially on the rates of interest. We divided the generic expression banks as an entity and we considered their statement of finances. Our research in the economic literature led us to present some models of auto-economy (Tobin, Modigliani and Sutch). The study of three excess liquidities generating bodies (the CDC, the crédit agricole and the sociétés d'assurances) led us to two important conclusions. First there is no full validation of these models, within our study limits. Second, concerning these three bodies and the period observed in our study, we found heterogeneity of financial behaviors. This last conclusion means that it seems difficult, if not impossible to form a single model that should explain the investments behaviors of the considered bodies
