Basic variety and interlanguage in Italian L2. Notes on Arab speakers Italian L2 writing The Basic Variety is a “simple, versatile, and highly efficient for most communicative purposes” system (Klein and Perdue, 1997: 304). The main goal of this article is to find out if L1 transfer phenomena in Italian L2 Arabic speakers are acceptable in Basic Variety (BV) Italian L2 or if they should be avoided because they hinder the communicative functionality of BV Italian L2. Starting from a synthetic premise on some characteristics of the Arabic language and some educational issues regarding the learning of Italian by Arabic speakers (Della Puppa, 2007), we make observations on BV and finally we focus on the analysis of some texts that represent a sub corpus of the VALICO corpus (Corino and Marello, 2017) produced in Italian L2 by Arabic speakers.

This article questions the long-standing assumption that heritage Italian can be characterized as italiano popolare on account of a number of similar non-standard features. It is argued that this is a problematic comparison due to some methodological lacunae in research into heritage Italian and that a systematic corpus-based analysis is needed in order to reveal its underlying sociolinguistic dynamics. This study focuses on a corpus of Italian spoken by the Italian community in Flanders (the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium) and presents a multivariate analysis of a set of morphosyntactic simplification features that have been labelled as typical of italiano popolare. It will be shown that the features of heritage Italian clearly correlate to a set of traditional language contact variables (e.g., contact with the home language and intergenerational transmission). This variation pattern shows that heritage Italian can no longer be connected to italiano popolare in the original sense of the term (viz. an interlanguage or diastratically lower regional Italian).

This essay aims to analyze how and where English methods of word formation participates in Italian word formation. Results are achieved by examining a specific corpus made up of articles taken from the first pages of La Stampa and written during the first ten days of January in 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010. The analysis reveals how important English is in Italian word formation: new Italian words are be formed by adding prefixes and suffixes to an English word or by combining words. In our opinion, the typical English sequence ‘Dnte+Dnto’ is one of the most significant methods of Italian word formation and it shows how English influences Italian so far.

Resumen
Modality expresses high probability and total degree through boosters (Halliday 1985,Holmes 1990). Through them, writers reinforce statements with the assurance of reliableknowledge (cf. Hyland 1998b). This study compares the usage of boosting emphasizers (e.g. certainly) and intensifiers (e.g. completely) (cf. Quirk et al. 1985) and their orientation and manifestation (cf. Halliday & Matthiessen 2014) in Albanian and Italian student academic writings in L1 and English as an L2. I compiled an Italian and an Italian English corpus (around 3 million words each) as well as an Albanian corpus (around 2.2 million words) and Albanian English one (around 700,000 words). The corpora are comparable in terms of genre, disciplinary domain, gender and the division of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ sciences. Since very little research has been conducted on academic writing in Albania (Toska 2015), it is essential to initiate research in this field. The results showed that boosters were significantly favored in Italian and Italian English and less favored in Albanian. Conclusively, Italians show more commitment than Albanians.

Resumen
The aim of this study is to compare various lexical structures between a learner corpus of students with Italian as a foreign language and a reference monolingual Italian corpus. More specifically, the first is a learner corpus (part of a wider learner corpus) comprised of Greek students studying Italian as a foreign language while the second is the CWIC reference corpus of native Italian speakers. The research findings help us explain the role of didactic material in comprehending linguistic structures that are found in informal letters/emails and, moreover, they provide us valuable information regarding the use of the same lexical structures by native speakers.

Resumen
This contribution describes the potential of parallel corpus analysis for the development of research skills in the translation classroom. Using culinary texts as a case in point, and more specifically a culturally salient Italian text from the turn of the 19th century (Pellegrino Artusi's La scienza in cucina e l'arte del mangiar bene/Science in the kitchen and the art of eating well, in its original Italian and translated English version), a detailed analysis is offered of the Italian equivalents of the verb lemma COOK and of the English equivalents of the Italian verb lemma CUOCERE, showing how the paradigmatic and syntagmatic insights thus obtained could be used to construct bilingual lexical/terminological profiles of units of meaning, and/or to shed light on translation strategies and norms, depending on one's research hypotheses and variables. Two more unorthodox uses of parallel corpora to tap into translators' domain-specific knowledge, and as aids in the interpretation of culturally salient historical and literary texts, are also discussed.

Resumen
This paper examines a series of documentaries produced in the period between 1956 and 1964 that document the activities of Italian migrants around the world (a corpus of more than 100 films and programmes altogether). These films, which record the dedicated and laborious nature of Italians around the globe, play a double role. On the one hand, they serve as a necessary adjunct to the establishment of a ‘labour culture’ in Italy, a central aspect of the compromise between labour unrest and the demands of capital in which the figure of the worker is continually praised. At the same time, they serve to obscure and rewrite the Italian collective memory concerning the legacy of Fascist imperialism and Italian involvement in colonial expansion, in the process recasting the Italian coloniser as the ‘good worker’.

Resumen
After the Great War, in autumn 1918 the nationalities of the Austro–Hungarian Monarchy proclaimed their independence. Croatia, which formed a personal union with the Hungarian Kingdom for centuries, was recognized to be an independent state by the Hungarian Government. The Croatian Committee formed in London in 1915 expressed its willing to be part of a federalist South-Slavic state. In this way Hungary lost its only one port, the city of Fiume, as territorically it was part of the Istria. Nevertheless, it was not obvious that Croatia could keep Fiume – Rijeka –, as the Italian National Council of the city formed on 30 October 1918 proclaimed its belonging to Italy through a petition written on 4 November 1918 to the prime minister Vittorio Emanuele Orlando, as the majority of the Fiumean citizens were Italians. This petition made Italy to claim Fiume on the Paris Peace Conference held in 1919, although it was not judged or promised to the Italians in the secret Treaty of London of 1915 that made Italy to enter into the war. The question of Fiume caused serious conflict among Italy and Yugoslavia, and – as the Peace Conference gave the city to the Yugoslavian Kingdom – in autumn 1919 the Italian poet Gabriele D’Annunzio decided to annex Fiume and create a city state. In my paper I will present, through the case of Fiume, what consequences an only day – in this case the 4 November 1918 – can have in history.

Resumen
Collocations are ubiquitous in everyday language, which help language users sound more natural and ease the processing burden during language production. They are also commonly taught in foreign language classrooms and those learners who can master these prevalent word combinations and chunks get to use the language more fluently as they enjoy a processing advantage. There are different approaches to the definition of these frequently co-occurring word combinations, but the current study embraces the frequentist approach which adopts a corpus linguistic technique and tries to combine corpus linguistics and user intuition data in its interpretations. Collocations have been extensively investigated from many different angles using both corpus linguistics and psycholinguistics techniques so far. Having its spark in the theory of collocational priming, the present study attempts to (a) investigate the relationship between corpus-driven association measures and the collocational frequency judgements of L1 Turkish-L2 English-L3 Italian users, (b) analyse the possible effect of congruence across the languages on the frequency relationship, (c) question if there is a difference between L1 Italian users’ and L3 Italian users’ sensitivity towards collocational strength based on their collocational frequency intuitions in Italian and (d) find humble evidence for the psycholinguistic reality of collocations in the L3 Italian mental lexicon, if any. The results indicate that language users’ frequency judgements in L2 English and L3 Italian correlate with an association measure (t-score) and the frequency of congruent items are judged more accurately. Additionally, L3 Italian users’ frequency intuitions overlap with native Italian users to a certain extent. The findings are discussed in the light of the earlier research on usage-based language use and frequency intuition.

Resumen
<p class="Abstract">The paper is about the challenge of approaching the teaching of economic and cultural (Italian) issues through a nineteenthcentury resource. What could be a reliable material to build the intercultural bridge necessary to a translator, specialized in economics and history? Papafeio Archive and its epistolary Italian corpus can be useful under various respects. The letters are very interesting to the modern reader, since they show a cultural cross section of the nineteenth century Maltese, and generally Mediterranean, society. At first sight this conspicuous (598 letters) material could be considered obsolete, but in fact it is both productive and reliable in order to teach LSP. There are at least three main reasons for that. 1) The language itself: Italian and, more precisely, Italian language in the Mediterranean basin, that is Southern Italy and Malta, during nineteenth century. 2) Cultural models: they are stronger in epistolary corpora. 3) Specialized language: Papafis himself was a broker, and his letters often deal with business transactions in a strongly connoted cultural context. The paper shows how what we consider obsolete material can cover the cultural gap contained in an economic/historic text. Moreover it demonstrates the necessity for a deep intralinguistic intertemporal perception and knowledge of the Italian language cultural system as a primary instrument for the mediation process that a (Greek) translator should provide.</p><p class="Abstract"> </p>

Resumen
Abstract This article introduces EPTIC (the European Parliament Translation and Interpreting Corpus), a new bidirectional (English<>Italian) corpus of interpreted and translated EU Parliament proceedings. Built as an extension of the English<>Italian subsection of EPIC (the European Parliament Interpreting Corpus), EPTIC is an intermodal corpus featuring the pseudo-parallel outputs of interpreting and translation processes, aligned to each other and to the corresponding source texts (speeches by MEPs and their written up versions). As a first attempt at unearthing the potential of EPTIC, we investigate lexical simplification replicating the methodology proposed by Laviosa (1998a; 1998b), but extending it to encompass both a monolingual comparable and an intermodal perspective. Our results indicate that the mediation process reduces complexity in both modes of language production and both language directions, with interpreters simplifying the input more than translators, and evidence of simplification being more lexical in English and more lexico-syntactic in Italian.

Abstract This article investigates the use of finite reporting clauses with that-clause complementation (e.g. I will suggest that…) as devices for the expression of stance in academic texts (Hyland and Tse 2005; Charles 2006). These constructions are compared to their functional equivalents in Italian, i.e. reporting clauses with che (‘that’) complementiser. The comparison is carried out using a corpus-based approach, involving the analysis of a parallel corpus of Political Science papers in English and their translations into Italian, as well as a comparable corpus of articles originally written in Italian within the same discipline. Thanks to their ability to convey evaluative meanings, reporting clauses are analysed as structures that may provide insights into the epistemological negotiations taking place in the encounter of different research traditions through the practice of translation.

The goal of the article is to provide a comparison between several words from Florentine vernacular language and modern Italian language, using software written by the author. This paper focuses on two corpora: the first one includes a selection of Florentine vernacular literature and the second one a group of literary books written in a modern Italian language from the end of XIX Century up until the present. The article demonstrates the use of some features of the software to compare the two corpora, ranking the lexicographic entries using different strategies. It is possible to analyse the lexicon taking into consideration different types of sorting, using only three parameters: the word frequency, the percentage of frequency according to the number of words in the corpus, and the percentage of texts where the word is found in the corpus. From these parameters a fourth parameter also arises the level of persistence of words in each corpus. The software allows observing the differences in the use of lexicon in various periods of history, comparing the Florentine vernacular language, which was used in the Italian peninsula till the beginning of XIX Century, to the modern Italian language.

Indicators of complexity in the speech of Italian L2 teachers: a quantitative analysis Quantitative analyses of L2 English teacher talk have allowed us to investigate how they make – not always conscious and planned way – adjustments in their way of speaking in front of a class of learners. These adjustments concern several linguistic levels and vary in intensity according to the learners' overall level of competence. In this paper we propose to quantitatively analyze the complexity of the teacher talk for Italian as L2 teachers, collected and transcribed during lessons from A1 and B1 levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR, Council of Europe, 2001). Part of the transcripts concern lessons carried out in class during face-to-face lessons (corpus ParInIt, Parlato di Insegnanti di Italiano), while a second corpus is composed of lessons administered online asynchronously, through a YouTube channel (corpus Oneworlditaliano). We propose a classification of the adjustments that enables testing the quantitative difference between lessons belonging to level A1 and B1 and between face-to-face vs. online lessons. Furthermore, this work aims to understand if quantitative analyses can help discover the teachers' adjustments that make the input more understandable.

Resumen
Abstract In Italian, grazie ‘thanks’ and ringraziare ‘to thank’ historically introduce an object by means of the preposition di ‘of’ (Renzi, Salvi & Cardinaletti 1991: 545–548); when grazie and ringraziare introduce a subordinate infinite clause, they may all the same be followed by either di or per ‘for’, the latter being the habitual preposition introducing an implicit causal subordinate (ibid.). In light of these considerations, a general lower frequency of occurrence of collocations with per would be expected. This article argues that, in contemporary Italian, there has been an increase in the use of constructions with per and that such an increase is due to an influence from the English thanks/to thank for. Through diachronic lexicographic, quantitative and qualitative analyses carried out over a range of dictionaries and corpora, this article will show that the frequency of use of forms with per has indeed more than octupled in writing from 1200 to 2011 and more than doubled in speech from 1965 to 2003. Moreover, by analyzing the distribution of the studied constructions in a corpus of dubbed Italian from (American) English, the article will also explore the possibility that language contact with English, mainly via dubbing translations, may have played a concurrent fundamental role motivating such changes.

Resumen
The analysis of special multilingual corpora is still in its infancy, but it may serve a particularly important role for the directions it offers both in cross-linguistic investigation and in the selection of the most typical features of text types and genres. To exemplify the information which can be obtained from corpus evidence, the paper reports on an on-going corpus-driven research project, named Bononia Legal Corpus (BOLC). The main aim of BOLC is to build multilingual machine readable law corpora. Data are at present limited to English and Italian, but an extension is envisaged to include other languages. Before the first sample, a preliminary pilot corpus was constructed to consider European legislation and create a conceptual framework to be used as a first-level experience. In the paper, sections 2 and 3 describe the corpus design and formatting as well as the corpus access tools. Sections 4 and 5 discuss two case studies and analyse two semantic areas which can be seen as two ends of the same variational continuum. At one end, we consider the words contratto and contract, which through the extension of international transactions and circulation may be supposed to have acquired transnational traits. At the other, we focus on a semantic area which may be expected to present translation problems for the differences existing in the two socio-institutional systems. Reference is made to the English words tax and duty and to the Italian words tassa and imposta.

Resumen
Recent research in audiovisual translation has focussed on the language of both original and translated dialogue, revealing different degrees of alignment between fictional dialogue and spontaneous conversation. In this context, demonstratives deserve special attention as they are major means to highlight segments of the current discourse and extra-linguistic reality in speech and may play a significant role in cinematic language as well. Furthermore, demonstratives are an area of dissimilarity between languages, with their translation being potentially subject to interference from the source to the target text. Through a quantitative corpus-based approach, this study explores to what extent demonstratives occur in the language of Italian dubbing, how similar in this respect dubbed dialogue is to Italian spoken language and what translation operations may account for the observed translation outcomes. Drawing on a small English-Italian parallel corpus of film dialogue, all English demonstrative pronouns have been coded for syntactic role, pragmatic function and translation operation. Results show that demonstratives occur to a lesser extent in dubbed film language vis-à-vis both Italian conversation and the source English dialogues. These findings are discussed in terms of the cross-linguistic contrast between Italian and English as well as the convergence of dubbed dialogue towards the model of original Italian film language.

Resumen
This essay focusses on how the knowledge of cross-cultural pragmatics can provide a theoretical background for the translation practice, especially in the search for equivalent functions. This study concentrates on the Russian and the Italian languages and on the speech act of requesting, in that not only is request amongst the most frequent speech acts, but also it is realised in different ways in the two target languages. In particular, whereas imperative is a common strategy used in Russian requests, its presence is restricted to informal bilateral requests in the Italian-speaking contexts. In order to investigate how the imperative is distributed in requests translated from Russian into Italian and vice versa, and whether such translations are appropriate from a pragmatic perspective, in our study we have analysed the occurrences of the imperative request “give (me)!” in Russian (дай!) and Italian (dammi!) in the parallel Russian-Italian corpus of the National Corpus of the Russian Language.

Resumen
The goal of this paper is to offer a model to quantify the level of complexity of the linguistic content of a corpus in Italian extracted from OpenWHO, WHO’s health emergency learning platform (Rohloff et al. 2018; Zhao et al. 2019). The nature of the computational ranking costs of a typology of relativization strategies is investigated. To reach this goal, the results of the corpus are compared with other three syntactic annotated corpora from Italian belonging to different genres (news, social media, encyclopedic entries, legal). The results show that online learning contents in public health reduce complex structures in syntactic terms. The case study presented here provides a methodology to quantify syntactic and computational complexity in corpus studies.

This paper aims to spark the interest in how written messages contain evidences of the spoken language. This research is corpus-based: in the initial chapters can be found a description of how data were collected to make the corpus. Reformulation, lexical repetition in textual cohesion and polysemic lexicon were recognized as linguistic aspects linked with the spoken language. In conclusion, how messages may be the way of a new contact between writing and speaking in the history of the Italian language will be revealed. Moreover, these texts are likely to represent an important development in a new form of informal written Italian.

Resumen
The research is focused on the comparison between the abbreviations in modern Italian and those in Serbian and Montenegrin language, as stems for derivation by nominal, adjectival, and verbal suffixes. The approach is contrastive, and for the corpora were used mostly materials extracted from the daily press, as well as dictionaries of neologisms in the case of Italian corpus. For the Italian corpus, the dictionaries used were Neologismi: Parole nuove dai giornali (2009) by Istituto Treccani, with an updated online version of that dictionary on the publisher’s site https://www.treccani.it/magazine/lingua_italiana/neologismi/, as well as the database ONLI: Osservatorio Neologico della Lingua Italiana (https://www.iliesi.cnr.it/ONLI/), which collects materials mostly from daily and weekly press. Several studies on abbreviations were also very helpful as the source for examples of suffixation. Serbian and Montenegrin press was analyzed as one corpus, as there are virtually no differences between these languages as far as abbreviations are concerned. The latter corpus relies mostly on online versions of Serbian and Montenegrin daily press (Vijesti, Pobjeda, Dan, Novosti, Telegraf, Politika, and so on), with several examples taken from social media, blogs and web portals, for the most part through the web site Kontekst.io (https://www.kontekst.io/) which for Serbian corpus uses database srWaC (Serbian Web, https://www.clarin.si/noske/run.cgi/corp_info?corpname=srwac&struct_attr_ stats=1&subcorpora=1). As in printed Serbian and Montenegrin literature were found only older and, in some cases, outdated examples, it was necessary to complement this corpus with newer and more up-to-date materials. In the corpora analysis, neologisms derived from acronyms by suffixation were of particular interest, as an indicator of vitality and productivity of these lexical items in modern language. As they become more and more present in modern languages, this traditional approach to abbreviations as a marginal anomaly should be revised. It is necessary to establish consistent rules of writing and pronouncing for some acronyms, as well as to meet the requirements of everyday use which their limited inflection and morphosyntactic irregularity can complicate. Although their form does not conform to the rest of the language system, their use is becoming more frequent and encompassing, and the number of derivations from the most used and present abbreviations keeps growing. In both Serbian and Montenegrin linguistics, the research of abbreviations has merely started as far as word formation is concerned. Therefore, this field offers a lot of potential for further research, especially if one observes the daily influence of extralinguistic context on the changes in modern language.

Resumen
This article identifies and analyses a catalogue of English loanwords from Italian merchant texts; specifically commercial letters (1392-1401) sent to employees in the service of the ‘merchant of Prato’, Francesco Datini, and his company. Research on loanwords in late medieval London has already shown a significant degree of linguistic exchange between Italy and England. The corpus studied here consists of seventy-eight letters published by Nicolini (2020) which are subjected to a linguistic analysis for the first time in the paper. Within the corpus, twenty-five English loanwords were identified, revealing a far greater degree of lexical exchange than what has previously been recorded in the literature. However, there were occurrences of loanword transfer where the etyma or direction of transfer was unclear and therefore not easily identifiable. Italian morphological changes of English loanwords include but are not limited to: adjectival and noun case marking, gemination, deletion of double consonants, apocope, and phonological reduction. The results provide insight into the extent of language and cultural exchange between local English speakers and Italian merchant immigrants in the period immediately preceding the Renaissance.

Abstract This contribution describes the functional properties of Italian sentence adverbs (SAs) occurring in the left periphery, i.e. in clause initial position, on the basis of a corpus-based analysis of articles drawn from online daily newspapers. We show that a qualitative analysis of the data found in our corpus (albeit relatively small) using the Basel model for paragraph segmentation allows to substantially refining our understanding of the information and discourse properties of these items. Our data suggests that there are important differences in the information properties of two classes of SAs, thereby confirming a classification of the category of SAs in at least two main categories. Finally, the data analyzed allows further refining our taxonomic model of Sentence Adverbials.

The present paper focuses on the syntactic description of verb-second-sentences from a contrastive view (German-Italian). The study is based upon a corpus of texts written by Italian native speakers of the course German Language for Tourism at the University of Pisa. This paper is composed of two parts: the first one aims at pointing out the main grammatical structural differences between Italian and German declarative sentences as far as the position of the verb is concerned; the second one shows the results gained by analysing the corpus of written texts referring to the position of the verb in declarative sentences in order to provide a successful methodological approach to verb-second-sentences in the didactics of German as foreign language

Resumen
Abstract This study describes the outcomes of a POS-based method for the automatic extraction of V-N Italian oral academic collocations from an annotated corpus. A frequency statistical measure is applied to automatically extract the collocations from the POS-tagged corpus. The results reveal that frequency alone is not sufficient to measure the degree of association that connects the two elements of a word pair. In order to detect the real-attested Italian collocations, the data has been further evaluated by 50 Italian native speakers. The results indicate that these combinations are tightly linked to their context of usage. Thus, native speakers should be exposed to these phrasal contexts to activate their mechanisms of explicit reflection and assess the degree of collocativity of these combinations.

Resumen
This study examined how tonal prominence impacts the acoustic cues to features of Italian vowels. It was one aspect of an analysis of the LaMIT (Lexical Access Model for Italian) project [Di Benedetto et al., “Speech recognition of spoken Italian based on detection of landmarks and other acoustic cues to distinctive features,” in 179th ASA Meeting, Chicago, IL, 8–12 December (2020)]. We strove to understand and systematize the quantitative changes to vowel quality provoked by prosodic and lexical stress, using the LaMIT corpus (100 Italian sentences recited twice by four speakers). Prominent vowels were classified with the TOBI (Tones and Break Indices) labelling method. Accents deemed tonally prominent, known as “pitch accents,” were starred and given a label that reflected their F0 contours. Labels were limited to those put forth by Avesani (“ToBIt: Un sistema di trascrizione per l’intonazione italiana,” in Atti 5e Giornate di Studio del Gruppo di Fonetica Sperimentale, Povo, Italy, pp. 85–98) as constitutive of the prosody of standard Italian. Labels also marked silences, elisions, and spaces between words. Results will clarify if prominence in Italian induces enhanced vowel sonority, or instead a “hyperarticulation” of distinctive segments, contributing to an ongoing debate on the subject.

Resumen
This paper examines how migration redefines family narratives and dynamics. Through a parallel between the mother and the mother tongue, I unravel the emotional, linguistic, social, and ideological connotations of the mother–daughter relationship, which I define as a ‘condensed narrative about origin and identity’. This definition refers to the fact that the daughter’s biological, affective, linguistic, and socio-cultural identity grounds in the mother. The mother–daughter tie also has a gendered dimension, which opens up interesting gateways into the female condition. Taking this assumption as a starting point, I examine how migration, impacting on the mother–daughter relationship, can redefine gender roles and challenge models of femininity, which are culturally, socially, geographically, and linguistically embedded. I investigate this aspect from a linguistic perspective, through a reading of a corpus of narratives written by four Italian-Canadian writers. The movement from Italy to Canada enacts ‘the emergence of alternative family romances’ and draws new routes to femininity. This paper seeks to illustrate how, in the narratives I examine, these new routes are explored through linguistic means. The authors in my corpus use code-switching to highlight contrasting views of femininity and reposition themselves with respect to politics of gender.

Resumen
Abstract The aim of this paper is to study the categorizing function of exemplification in Italian. Based on a corpus study, it will be shown that the strategies used to exemplify are mobilized from a variety of different syntactic levels, ranging from small clauses to lexemes. Though differentiated, exemplifying constructions are all characterized by the same function, that is, to signal that the expressions in their scope are examples and that they have to be processed as triggers of a higher-level category. Exemplifying constructions signal the non-referential status of what is within their scope and presuppose non-exhaustivity, namely, the existence of further alternatives which are contextually associable with the mentioned exemplars. We will first provide a semantic analysis of the constructions under examination (in terms of semantic specificity of examples), and then move on to the distributional features (in terms of the realis/irrealis status of exemplification contexts and the kind of speech act) and textual features (in terms of topic continuity of exemplification). In the conclusions, we will propose the outline of a discourse profile of exemplification as it has emerged from the analysis of corpus data.

Resumen
This article reports on two parallel but independent studies of idiom variation in corpora — one of Italian and one of English. In the Italian study, 324 idiomatic expressions were looked for in a corpus of 16 million words, while the English study investigated more than 2,800 idioms in an 18-million word corpus. A description is given of the search techniques employed to locate instances of variation. We present our findings by first describing the variation types common to both languages and thereafter examining cases where variation seemed to be wholly or predominantly language specific. Many similarities were found to exist between the two languages, and language specific variation could often be related to more general language specific features. We also comment on the overall frequency of idiom variation, which was found to be very similar in the two studies. In our concluding remarks we suggest that contrastive idiom analysis of the sort carried out, could and should be undertaken between other language pairs, and that the resulting interlingual descriptions would be of use in practical applications such as second language learning and computational tasks.

Resumen
Abstract This paper provides a corpus-based analysis of compounding in Old Italian. The semantic and formal properties of compound words attested in Old Italian are described and discussed through the theoretical tools provided by Construction Morphology. The analysis confirms that compounding is exploited since the earliest attestations of the language. It reveals that Old Italian compounds are mostly right-headed endocentric or exocentric: particularly, endocentric [ADV-Y]Y, [A-N]N|A and exocentric [V-N]N are the most productive schemas. Moreover, this study highlights a significant influence of Latin on Italian compounding, whereby many Old Italian compounds are Latin loanwords and calques which served as a model for the creation of new native compounds.

"Towards a new definition of manner through Italian spontaneous dialogues. Manner has been traditionally considered as a semantic prime expressing the way in which an action is performed. In previous studies, it has been treated as a category fulfilling a basically descriptive function, encoded by an inventory of lexical or morpho-syntactic items (such as verb roots or adverbial phrases). In this paper, we propose a functional and corpus-driven definition of this notion. We present an annotation scheme of Manner constructions and we show how we applied it to 40 spontaneous Italian dialogues from the VOLIP corpus. The analysis of Manner constructions in spoken interactional data shows that, far from being a static descriptive notion, Manner can be regarded as an interactive, gradable category, co-constructed by speakers. Resumen
The aim of this paper is to present LEX.CH.IT, a corpus for micro-diachronic linguistic investigations of Swiss normative acts in Italian. Italian has a peculiar position as an official minority translation language within the Swiss institutional system. Until now, few studies have focused on Swiss legal Italian, but the academic interest has been growing over the last two decades. In order to further expand on research in this field, resources such as corpora are fundamental. This is why LEX.CH.IT has been compiled. This corpus was originally created in the context of a doctoral research project, which will be briefly outlined in this paper. The main goals of the project are to determine whether clarity is a feature of Swiss legislation in Italian, whether there have been relevant evolutions over the last five decades and to assess the role of translation for a clear legislation. In the future, LEX.CH.IT could also be useful for a number of other projects aiming to shed light on the features of this language variety.

Resumen
The present study deals with the phonetic description of sentence topics in Italian tourist guides’ speech. Topical coherence characterizes the communicative strategies that human experts adopt when delivering contents to the visitors of cultural sites. Topical progression, which ensures temporal, spatial, and referential continuity, is frequently expressed by sentence topics as well. The relevant literature generally supports the idea of a topic accent and a rising-falling (or “hat”) contour is described as the most frequent for the unmarked topic in Italian utterance structures, but other realizations are also possible. The hypothesis that we want to test in this work is whether this variability is due to specific factors. Hence, we investigate phonetic realization of sentence topics as a function of syntactic features -structure, function and weight- and textual-pragmatic features -discourse role considering ±aboutness, ±contrastiveness, ±givenness-. Specifically, tonal events, i.e., accents and boundaries, phonetic phrasing, and disfluency phenomena were investigated. Results show that both syntactic and pragmatic factors play a role in the phonetic realization of topics, though they act at different levels. In particular, disfluencies are found to be affected by syntactic weight and givenness, while tonal events seem to depend mainly on the discourse role.

Resumen
We argue that corpus linguistics should be used as a tool for teaching students a second foreign language. The researchers focus on the study of English loanwords in French and Italian. We propose a new approach to teaching a second foreign language to students who are fluent in English as a first foreign language. We emphasize the importance of concordance in linguistics and teaching a second foreign language. We analyze the works of the methodologists who suggest using corpus technologies in the language classroom to develop students’ lexical skills. We touch upon the characteristics of corpus technologies, define the term “loanwords” and refer to the concept of “English borrowings”. The researchers analyze the role of English loanwords in French and Italian, and identify the spheres where English borrowings are mainly used. Based on the language of the media, we study the models of assimilation of English loanwords in French and Italian. We focus on the most popular English loanwords used in France and Italy, provide statistical data on their use and analyze their grammatical and semantic assimilation. We analyze the most popular loanwords from the English language; study their origin, language context and the way they were modified according to the patterns of the receiving languages. It is advisable to implement the proposed approach in teaching the vocabulary of a second foreign language and to use other tools of corpus linguistics as teaching methods.

Resumen
Fixed lexical or syntactical expressions and formulae hallmark legal language. They serve both linguistic and legal purposes, and should be rendered accordingly in a target language and legal system. Most of the times, however, formulaic expressions are translated by resorting to calques, false cognates, or phrases that are uncommon in the target legal language (and legal system). This paper is aimed at exploring how and if corpus analysis can dispel doubts and help find acceptable translation candidates. As there are currently no publicly available legal corpora addressing corporate documents such as contracts and agreements, this paper wishes to bridge this gap by building and relying on an ad hoc corpus of authentic agreements written in English as a first language according to the laws of England and Wales. In this way, corpus evidence can help find equivalents and, possibly, address recurrent mistranslations from Italian into English. During the corpus analysis process, the paper shows and discusses search queries and how equivalents can be obtained. At the same time, it questions dictionary entries. The paper findings highlight that the consultation of the ad hoc corpus allows to find acceptable translations of Italian legal formulae and address recurrent mistranslations. English formulaic expressions, in fact, can be rendered satisfactorily thanks to the possibility of noticing word usages in context, keywords in contexts and collocations. Further research can encompass a wider variety of formulae and/or legal documents so that scholars and translators can be equipped with useful reference tools.

Resumen
In this paper, we investigate the usage of opinion verbs in Italian as a foreign language and any errors this usage may cause, taking into account intralanguage and interlanguage factors. First of all, we analyze the frequency of opinion verb types, in a Greek corpus of native speakers and we investigate the frequency of the same type of verbs in an Italian Translator Learner Corpus compiled by the same learners. Secondly, we explore to what extent there are errors regarding the use of opinion verbs. The data will show that learners, in some cases, commit errors because of their mother tongue influence while in others they avoid using opinion verbs because of this particular lack of knowledge.

Resumen
Linking interdisciplinarity and multimodality in translation studies, this paper will analyse the diachronic translation of English ideophones in Italian Disney comics. This is achieved thanks to the compiling of a bi-directional corpus of sound symbolic entries spanning six decades (1932–1992)—a corpus that was created following extensive archival work in various Italian and American libraries between 2014 and 2016. The central aim is to showcase practical examples coming from published comic scripts and to highlight patterns of translation in each of the five different time windows which were chosen according to specific historical, linguistic and cultural vicissitudes taking place in the Italian nation. Overall, the intention is to shed light on an under-developed area of studies that focuses on the cross-linguistical transposition of ideophonic forms in comic books and to pinpoint how greater factors might influence the treatment of such deceptively miniscule elements in the comic books’ pages.

Resumen
This article investigates direct quotations in a corpus of corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports in Italian, Chinese, and English. The corpus is composed of 60 CSR reports published by Italian, Chinese, and American companies in the banking and energy sector. The study aims at exploring what types of textual voices are involved in the discourse of CSR reporting and how different sources of voices are represented, using the framework of social actor representation proposed by Van Leeuwen. The results show that the voices presented in direct quotations are often “orchestrated” by companies into “symphony” rather than “polyphony.” Most of the sources of direct quotations are represented as individuals with specified names. The comparative analysis shows that companies from different cultural backgrounds present different preferences in selecting and representing the various sources. The Italian and American CSR reports present more voices from managers, while the Chinese CSR reports show a clearer preference for voices from employees and clients.

Resumen
This paper investigates the idiom principle realized as four-word phrases (4-grams) headed by prepositions in specialized corpora in English and Italian. Concentrating on at the end of, it reports that the collocates of at the end of regard time, and that apparently synonymic 4-grams are not used in the same contexts. It then explores realizations of at the end of in a specialized comparable corpus of Italian. Two findings emerge: firstly, that the most obvious equivalent, alla fine d*, occurs more frequently than in the English corpus; secondly, this n-gram is frequently used, but has weaker collocational relations, and several synonymic 3-grams share its collocates. This invites contrastive research on lexical variation and repetition and on the strength of collocations of multi-word units in English and Italian. Lastly, the paper recounts an experiment with students who gained awareness of language by concentrating on phraseology in comparable corpora.
