Resumen
Renewal in an educational institution is a necessity, this is because educational institutions follow the times and the needs of an increasingly new era without reducing educational values. Reform cannot be separated from policy, there will be the right policy and the concept of reform through proper analysis, monitoring of policy implementation, and policy evaluation. The reform policy in Islamic boarding schools will present the ideals of modernizing Islamic boarding schools without losing the values of Islamic boarding schools. The method used uses a qualitative methodology with a library research approach, examining related references. According to Dede Rosyada, the functions of the pesantren are divided into two, the first is the functionalism model and the structuralism model, where in functionalism formal schools are included, such as madrasas or secondary schools and equivalent, then the structuralism function includes the development of student skills, such as agricultural skills, automation and so on.

Resumen
This article is devoted to the phenomenon of renewal (tajdid) in historical Islam. This topic is particularly relevant in the context of understanding the origins of Islamic modernism and neo-modernism, namely their embeddedness in the religious tradition. The fi rst paragraph traces the origins and content of the idea of renewal in historical tradition. Particular attention is paid to the connection between renewal and the spiritual and ethical revival of society (islah). Variable and constant characteristics in the development of the historical understanding of renewal are demonstrated. The second paragraph analyzes an issue fundamental to the topic in question as the distinction between innovation (bid‘a) and renewal. It is shown that despite the rather conservative rhetoric of historical renewers, tajdid has a creative nature, but at the same time retains the difference from an arbitrary innovation. The third paragraph reveals the mentioned creative dimension of tajdid: its connection with the practice of independent reasoning (ijtihad) and overcoming imitative thinking (taqlid). In conclusion, the author notes the peculiarities of the modern interpretation of the tajdid: the rejection of a literal understanding of the concept of “age” in the hadith about renewal and the assumption of the possibility of a collective renewer.

Resumen
The issue of renewal will always be associated with the advancement of science and technology as well as the changing demands of the times. Modernization or renewal can be an attempt to improve the situation both in terms of ways, concepts, and a set of methods commonly applied in order to deliver better circumstances. In the context of renewal education is the absolute thing to be done because part of maintaining the existence of education itself. Islamic education is uniquely different from other types of educational theory and practice largely because of the all-encompassing influence of the Qur’an. The renewal of Islamic education is an attempt to actualize the great values of religion in the form of an empirical and historical life. Nurcholis Madjid and Kuntowijoyo are two great Islamic thinkers of Indonesia who seek to actualize Islamic values in everyday life. Although not specific in the world of education, but what is done in Islamic renewal can be used in renewal in education. The values of religion that are still normative and subjective must be transformed into theories that can be translated in the empirical world and become objective. This paper aims to explore the thinking of Islamic renewal of these two figures and find its relevance to the development of Islamic education.

Since the nineteenth century, the study of history has become an important branch of historiography, and the number of related research discourses has renewed our understanding of the discipline in general. The study and learning of history has been undertaken in order to examine and summarise the lessons of historical research in order to make it better in the future. The Arab Islamic civilization of the Middle East has created a rich tradition of historiography, which has alternated and interpenetrated with various religious, humanistic and natural disciplines, occupying an important place in the history of Islamic culture and making a great contribution to the history of world civilization, while the tradition of Islamic historiography and its renewal in modern times have provided us with valuable lessons for the study of history today.

Ijtihad and Renewal is a confessional manifesto by Moroccan scholar andjurist, Said Shabbar. Very much in the style and substance of Taha Jabiral-Alwani, Abd al-Majid Najjar, and other leading lights of the InternationalInstitute of Islamic Thought, Shabbar adds a slightly more conservative and,if I may add, an Arab touch to the wider renewal discourse of this milieu. The intended audience of this monograph is no doubt a wide Muslimreadership, most of whom have little background in Islamic jurisprudence(fiqh) and even less in its legal theory literature (uṣūl al-fiqh). Sothis abridged version of Said Shabbar’s longer volume minus any footnotesmakes his material much more accessible to the general Muslim public.Nancy Roberts’ translation is mostly excellent and very readable (I did havesome questions however about two sentences that were likely either misleadingor at least unclear) ...

Resumen
AbstractThis paper responds to calls for renewal in Islamic schooling and education. In doing so, it provides insight into educators’ views on Islamic Studies (IS) in five Australian Islamic schools, with a focus on senior years (years 10, 11 and 12). The study offers a ‘dialogic alternative’ of ‘speaking with’ rather than ‘speaking for’ educators in Islamic educational research, planning, and renewal within K-12 Australian Islamic schools. It privileges educators’ voice and enables an insight into their experience with one of the most important and distinct features of Islamic schools – IS. Using phenomenology as a methodological framework, educators’ voice was elicited through focus groups where eighteen educators provided information describing their experience with IS. The study identified “strengths” and “challenges” of IS. Strengths includes parents’ desire for IS, educators’ personal connection with learner, knowledge of subject-matter, autonomy in teaching IS and unity among IS educators. The challenges outweigh the strengths and include insufficient time for IS, lack of resources, absence of a clear vision leading to a tokenistic and fragmented approach to the teaching of IS, low-level respect and recognition of IS educators and more.

Resumen
The renewal of Islamic law is essentially contrary to something that already exists (existing) then undergoes a qualitative change as a product of interaction in public life. It could be argued that the process of renewal of Islamic law is seen as something autonomous, but it also interacts with other elements in society that occur interdependently. Therefore, the concept of renewal of Islamic law requires adaptive stance with social conditions in which it interacts. In this case, the realization of the principle of al-muh}āfaz}atu ‘alā al-qadīmi al-s\ālih} wa al-akhdhu bi al-jadīd al-as\lah} (Maintaining the old one if it is still good and accept the new or changed if it is considered better) became a necessity. Within the framework of family law renewal in Indonesia, Islamic law has a very strategic and important role. From the sociological point of view, Islamic family law has deeply rooted in the Muslim daily live and become a living law in the midst of the majority of Indonesian people. Renewal of Islamic law in the context of family law in Indonesia includes four categories namely fiqh, fatwā, jurisprudence and legislation. This article explores these four categories and shows how reform influence these domains. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.20414/ujis.v19i1.1254

Resumen
This paper is intended as a historical research study on renewal business through technical codification of Islamic law (Taqnin) as well as theoretical implications of the legislation (Tashri’) of Islamic law through the political authorities called parliament. The authors conclude that taqnin and tashri’ as an instrument of reform in Islamic Law is not something new from if analyzed from a historical perspective. This has been initiated in the past at least by Daulah Abbasiya in the Second Century Hijriyah or Eighth AD, but failed because of a conflict between the political authority (umara) and religion (ulama) in fighting authority of the establishment of Islamic law. This issue over and over again when codification movement and legislation of Islamic law in the modern era has theoretically implicated and it is a rare phenomenon that should be more deeply considering the renewal of Islamic law which is ongoing it contains at least one millennium old historical value.

This paper discusses the making Islamic family law a formal law in the perspective of the political history of Islamic law in Indonesia, which cannot be separated from the role of the regime since the beginning of the Old Order era. In this era, the regime showed its alignment with the renewal of Islamic law. However, when the regime was not as firm and tended to be democratic, as it was during the Reformation era, Islamic family law reform tended to be stagnant. On the other hand, the history of Islamic family law renewal also experienced ups and downs because it is affected by political configurations, in which Indonesian Muslims attitudes could be classified into progressive and Islamist groups. Progressive groups try to fight for the renewal of Islamic family law contextually; whereas Islamist groups are more textual in responding to Islamic family law reform.

This article describes the development of Islamic family law in Somalia, ranging from marriage, divorce, guardianship, polygamy, wills and inheritance. In the practice of life that is in line with the times, place, time and conditions of the development and renewal of Islamic family law, it is always needed, especially after independence from the invaders. Whereas Islamic family law itself has actually been regulated in Islamic law. The formulation of the problem is: How is the development and typology of Islamic family law reform in Somalia. Using a qualitative approach with the document method and focus group discussion. The result is that the renewal of Islamic family law in 1975, called the Family Code of Somalia, contained a slight deviation from existing Islamic law and the school of thought adopted by the State, in which the issue of inheritance distribution between men and women is the same. The typology of renewal uses a progressive type of school unification and extradoctrinal reform.

The purpose of this study is to construct the dynamics of Muhammadiyah education in South Sumatera which is undergoing a phase called the local awakening. Such conditions occur after social, political and religious relations have struggled during the development of Muhammadiyah education there, which also helped encourage the renewal of overall Islamic education in South Sumatera. This study is a qualitative study with a social history approach. Data in the form of historical facts related to this research are collected through library and documentation techniques. The results of this study indicate that the construction of Muhammadiyah education as an identity for Islamic education in South Sumatera actually happened due to factors of Islamic renewal which occurred intensively in rural areas (periphery) that experienced a process of negotiation and integration in the social community. So that the renewal of Islam carried out by the modernist movement there actually appeared in rural areas not in urban areas as happened in other regions in Indonesia.

Resumen
Islamic civilisation is the diversified crystallisation of the essential values of the faith of Islam. These values can be summed up in two principles, one which is ‘vertical’ and Divine, the other ‘horizontal’ and human. The Qur’an is the vertical and Divine axis; the soul of the Prophet is the horizontal and human axis: it is at the point where the two intersect that there resides the immensely creative force capable of founding an authentic civilisation. All science, all art, all culture, all philosophy, all spirituality which can in any way be defined as ‘Islamic’ derives in the final analysis from this point of intersection between the human and the Divine, between earth and Heaven, between prophetic perfection and divine revelation. As regards the nature of the Islamic Revelation, there is not simply intersection between the two axes, but also profound complementarity between the divine Message and the human Messenger: on the one hand, the prophetic character (khuluq) was akin to the Qur’an, as his wife, A’isha, tells us in a famous narrative; and on the other, his character is described in the Qur’an itself as being ‘azim, “tremendous” (68:4)—an adjective used to describe both the Qur’an and God Himself.

This library research explains the position of ‘urf as the basis for reforming Islamic law and its contribution to the renewal of inheritance law in Indonesia, using the content analysis method. The result showed that ‘urf is of higher importance in the renewal of Islamic law and plays a very important role in reforming the inheritance law in Indonesia. Several KHI book II provisions were based on ‘urf, including the inheritance of adopted children and adoptive parents, żawul arḥām, radd, walad, joint property, and substitute heirs. Among the several forms of ‘urf that have been recognized as Islamic law, ‘urf of joint property comes from the rich culture and traditions of native Indonesia. Therefore, it has made a valuable contribution to the renewal of Islamic law in Indonesia.

Resumen
From the beginning of the Islamic era, Muslim societies have experienced periods of renewal (tajdid). Since the eighteenth century, Muslim societies across the world have been subject to a prolonged and increasingly deeply felt process of renewal. This has been expressed in different ways in different contexts. Amongst political elites with immediate concerns to answer the challenges of the West, it has meant attempts to reshape Islamic knowledge and institutions in the light of Western models, a process described as Islamic modernism. Amongst ‘ulama and sufis, whose social base might lie in urban, commercial or tribal communities, it has meant ‘the reorganisation of communities . . . [or] the reform of individual behavior in terms of fundamental religious principles’, a development known as reformism. These processes have been expressed in movements as different as the Iranian constitutional revolution, thejihadsof West Africa, and the great drives to spread reformed Islamic knowledge in India and Indonesia. In the second half of the twentieth century, the process of renewal mutated to develop a new strand, which claimed that revelation had the right to control all human experiences and that state power must be sought to achieve this end. This is known to many as Islamic fundamentalism, but is usually better understood as Islamism. For the majority of Muslims today, Islamic renewal in some shape or other has helped to mould the inner and outer realities of their lives.

Resumen
This article explores the themes of tradition and renewal in Islamic theology through a reading of Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī's Fayṣal al-tafriqa bayna l-islām wa-l-zandaqa ("The Decisive Criterion for Distinguishing Islam from Heresy"), a classic work about the boundaries of theological tolerance in Islam. The article begins by discussing descriptive and normative usages of the term "Islamic" and then moves on to reflect on al-Ghazālī's distinction between revelation and interpretation, his "rule of interpretation" (qānūn al-taʾwīl) and his emphasis on the importance of ethical and spiritual virtues for all intellectual activity, including theology, in relation to questions concerning tradition and renewal. It draws on Alasdair MacIntyre's notion of tradition as "an historically extended, socially embodied argument" and argues that attempts at theological renewal must, of course, be rooted in the foundational texts of the overarching Islamic tradition, mainly the Qur'an and the hadith corpus, but also in the historically extended and socially embodied arguments of its subtraditions, such as the Ashʿarī and Māturīdī schools of theology. The purpose of the article is to contribute to the ongoing discussion about theological renewal in the Islamic tradition and to the ongoing discussion about normative studies of Islamic theology at European universities by putting al-Ghazālī in dialogue with MacIntyre.

The emergence of new problems or problems in the community that really need legal clarity, all of which have not been answered in either the Qur'an or the Hadith, in connection with the cessation of revelation and the death of the Prophet Muhammad who acted as a mediator between revelation and the reality that lived at that time. The renewal of Islamic law is the solution, the purpose of this paper is to find out the concepts of Islamic law reform and figures who contribute to the renewal of Islamic law. Resumen
The conflict dynamics of revivalist and traditionalist Islamic groups always colorize development of ideological contest of religious live in Indonesia. One of the important episodes of this conflict dynamic occurred in the era of independence. Through this paper, the author is interested in portraying episodes of Islamic Revivalist dynamics in the independence era through the thoughts and works of influential revivalist scholars, namely Ahmad Hassan. This study aims to reveal the form of mediation of Ahmad Hassan's Islamic renewal in his book of tafsir Al-Furqan. The author uses a descriptive method of analysis with literature study techniques in reviewing the interpretation of Al-Furqan as the main object of research. The results showed that in mediating Ahmad Hassan's Islamic renewal, Kitab tafsir Al-Furqan accommodates and mediates Islamic renewal in two ways, namely formative and substantive ways. Formative way of mediation is indicated through the form of tafsir Al-Furqan as a literal and meaningful translation of tafsir. Critically, this form of translation aimed to make Al-Furqan accessible for Indonesian people at that time when they haven’t had proper understanding on Arabic literacy so that people could understand and refer to the meaning of the Qur'an directly. This is in line with Ahmad Hassan's renewal though about the Qur'an and hadith as the main sources of muslims. As for the substantive ways of mediation, tafsir Al-Furqan contains and expresses the thoughts of Ahmad Hassan's renewal as a substance in interpreting the verses of the Qur'an.

The debate between modernity and postmodernity in western discourses about law and morality calls for a similar debate in contemporary Islam. For Islam, the question is whether a rehabilitation of its classical discipline of ethics (`ilm al-akhlaq) may contribute to international morality even as it disabuses Islam of privileging Islamic jurisprudence (`ilm al-fiqh), which conceives of the Shari`ah as merely law. Islam’s strong tradition of ethical discourse is similar to the West’s classical and contemporary formulations of virtue ethics. Such a renewal constitutes a postmodern opportunity for contemporary Islam as it faces the globalization of western values and jurisprudence.

Resumen
This paper provides insight into senior secondary learners’ views on Islamic Studies (IS) in three large Australian Islamic schools. This study offers a ‘dialogic alternative’ of ‘speaking with’ rather than ‘speaking for’ learners in Islamic educational research, planning, and renewal within K-12 Islamic schools. The study privileges learners’ voice and enables an insight to their experience with one of the most important features of Islamic schools—Islamic Studies. Using phenomenology as a methodological framework, learner voice was elicited through focus groups where 75 learners (years 10, 11, and 12) provided information describing their experience with Islamic Studies. Thematic content analysis of the textual data suggests that learners’ dissatisfaction far outweighs their satisfaction with Islamic Studies. The findings of this paper can benefit Islamic schools in Australia and other Western contexts.

The data source used in this study is a secondary data source, because it only examines the literature or literature. From the results of this study, it can be understood that the role of the countries of Egypt and Sudan in fighting for qanunization (taqnin) and the formalization of Islamic law is very large. Even though they have to go through the challenges of Western imperialism and secularism, so that Islamic societies and countries have variations in responding to Western civilization today. Resumen
Historically, efforts to reform Family Law in parts of the Islamic world began to be realized in the late 19th century AD. The reality of Islamic legal reforms carried out in Islamic countries in North Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia gave rise to unprecedented changes in the last century. These changes occur both in the justice system and in the system applied. Changes to family law were first carried out by Turkey, then followed by Lebanon in 1919, Jordan in 1951, and Syria in 1953. Muslim countries in the world, in their context with the renewal of family law, are divided into three categories. First, an Islamic state that does not carry out any renewal and still enforces family law as stipulated in the books of fiqh. Secondly, an Islamic state that has completely abandoned Islamic family law and adopted European civil law. Third, countries that are trying to enforce Islamic family law but after making reforms here and there. This paper tries to discuss one of the reforms carried out by one Muslim country, namely Turkey, which is related to the reformation (reform) of family law that starts from the history of reform, legislation, renewal, and legal material. The author chose Turkey because it is the first Muslim country to make changes to family law.

Resumen
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) came into existence at the end of the 20th century during the Cold War, a period that also witnessed concerns among many Western intellectuals about the decline of the West. By the end of the century and the collapse of the former Soviet Union, the “clash of civilizations” thesis had placed Islamic civilisation at the center of international politics, once again raising questions about world peace and co-existence between civilisations. Could Islamic civilisation as represented by the OIC play a role at this juncture of history? Does it possess the capacity and know-how to meet this challenge? Such questions relate also to ideas of worldview: the Renaissance worldview of the West may be seen to have been tainted by Darwinism and Freudianism while the Islamic worldview appears corrupted by extremism. Can the OIC revive the universal Islamic values such as those upheld by Muhammad Iqbal-the 20th century student of Rumi? Can it do so in the context of tumultuous intra-Muslim relations? These questions frame our discussion in this paper.

<span class="fontstyle0">This article aims to examine the Islamic reform project through the reconstruction of theology and thought carried out by Ḥassan Ḥanafī and Indonesian Muslim intellectuals. Ḥassan Ḥanafī considered the need to reconstruct classical theology, which is regarded as too abstract in describing theological terms and does not have a strong practical basis as a value for the action. In criticizing classical theology, Ḥassan Ḥanafī offers two theocentric theories, namely language analysis, and social reality analysis. Conducting library research that relies on written materials and analyzed with content analysis techniques, the present study shows that Ḥassan Ḥanafī’s theoanthropocentric theological ideas have intersections with the development of Islamic thought in Indonesia. This can be proven by the translation of Ḥassan Ḥanafī’s books and examining his thoughts in Indonesia. Apart from that, Ḥassan Ḥanafī’s thoughts find relevance in Indonesia because Indonesian Muslim scholars carry out similar reform projects.</span> <br /><br />
