Resumen

This article is representative of the “culturalist” school of thought inpolitical science. Using a paradigm coined by Foucault, numerous facesof power in the international knowledge order are explored. Startingfrom the assumption that the burden of “cultural gate-keeping’’ restsheavily upon UNESCO’s shoulder, it is analyzed whether ISESCOcan count as a counter-power. Once the flaws of the comparativeframework that posits ISESCO as a “second UNESCO’ are shown,an Islamic methodology is used in order to see whether this Islamiccultural institution represents Islam or simulates it. Such an inquiryrequires a discursive analysis of two institutions that share a commoncultural goal using either the framework of internationalism or that ofthe Ummah.

Resumen

ISESCO Educational Centre in Malaysia (ISESCO Malaysia), in collaboration with the Islamic Education Department of Ministry of Education, Malaysia, offers various annual language activities to improve the level of Arabic language usage among secondary school students in Malaysia. One of the languages activities organised by ISESCO Malaysia annually, is an Arabic Short Film Competition. It is noticeable that there are variety of Arabic language usage errors appeared in the videos presented, including those resulting from language interference effect. Some of these errors are often repeated by students, believing that it is a sound of Arabic language. This study therefore, conducted to examine the errors of language interference effect and its causes among Arabic learners in Malaysia’s secondary school. The study has followed the descriptive approach to analyse these errors. The study found that linguistic errors among Arabic students in Malaysian secondary schools resulted from language interference effect of their mother tongue; by literally translating it, following the culture and rules, as well as lack of knowledge of the rules of the language and culture of the Arabic language. This study proposed an appropriate action to solve the problems using educational approach.

abstract: The southern Appalachian region is a hotspot of ecological biodiversity that is under increasing threat from climate change and rapid population growth. We posit that informal science education is uniquely adapted to foster environmental stewardship in the region, but the current state of informal science education within the southern Appalachians is poorly understood. We reviewed current informal science education centers (ISECs), which we define as centers for science learning outside of structured curriculum ( n = 166). For each of these centers, we compiled information on geographical location, programs offered, and funding sources. We found large geographic gaps in ISEC coverage that often aligned with low-population, low-income counties. The most common program type in our dataset was field trips, followed by public programming, while research and virtual programming were the least often offered. ISECs that had funding from multiple organizations generally had the most diverse and robust programming.

Background: Residual limb volume is often measured as part of routine care for people with amputations. These measurements assist in the timing of prosthetic fitting or replacement. In order to make well informed decisions, clinicians need access to measurement tools that are valid and reliable. Objectives: To assess the reliability and criterion validity of the iSense optical scanner in measuring volume of transtibial residual limb models. Study Design: Three assessors performed two measurements each on 13 residual limb models with an iSense optical scanner (3D systems, USA). Intra-rater and inter-rater reliability were calculated using intraclass correlation coefficients. Bland Altman plots were inspected for agreement. Criterion validity was assessed using a steel rod of known dimensions. Ten repeated measurements were performed by one assessor. A t-test was used to determine differences between measured and true rod volume. Results: Intra-rater reliability was excellent (range of intraclass correlation coefficients: 0.991–0.997, all with narrow 95% confidence intervals). While the intraclass correlation coefficients suggest excellent inter-rater reliability between all three assessors (range of intraclass correlation coefficients: 0.952–0.986), the 95% confidence intervals were wide between assessor 3 and the other two assessors. Poor agreement with assessor 3 was also seen in the Bland-Altman plots. Criterion validity was very poor with a significant difference between the mean iSense measurement and the true rod volume (difference: 221.18 mL; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Although intra-rater reliability was excellent for the iSense scanner, we did not find similar results for inter-rater reliability and validity. These results suggest that further testing of the iSense scanner is required prior to use in clinical practice. Clinical relevance The iSense offers a low cost scanning option for residual limb volume measurement. Intra-rater reliability was excellent, but inter-rater reliability and validity were such that clinical adoption is not indicated at present.

ABSTRACT A novel QnrB-like plasmid-mediated resistance determinant, QnrB19, was identified from an Escherichia coli clinical isolate from Colombia. Its gene was associated with an ISEcp1-like insertion element that did not act as a promoter for its expression. Using an in vitro model of transposition, we showed that the ISEcp1-like element was able to mobilize the qnrB19 gene.

ABSTRACT The plasmid-mediated novel β-lactamase CTX-M-64 was first identified in Shigella sonnei strain UIH-1, which exhibited resistance to cefotaxime (MIC, 1,024 μg/ml) and ceftazidime (MIC, 32 μg/ml). The amino acid sequence of CTX-M-64 showed a chimeric structure of a CTX-M-15-like β-lactamase (N- and C-terminal moieties) and a CTX-M-14-like β-lactamase (central portion, amino acids 63 to 226), suggesting that it originated by homologous recombination between the corresponding genes. The introduction of a recombinant plasmid carrying bla CTX-M-64 conferred resistance to cefotaxime in Escherichia coli, and the activities of cefotaxime and ceftazidime were restored in the presence of clavulanic acid. Of note, CTX-M-64 production could also confer consistent resistance to ceftazidime, which differs from the majority of CTX-M-type enzymes, which poorly hydrolyze ceftazidime. These results were consistent with the kinetic parameters determined with the purified CTX-M-64 enzyme. The bla CTX-M-64 gene was flanked upstream by an ISEcp1 sequence and downstream by an orf477 sequence. The sequence of the 45-bp spacer region between the right inverted repeat (IRR) of ISEcp1 and bla CTX-M-64 was exactly identical to that of ISEcp1-bla CTX-M-15-like. Moreover, the presence of a putative IRR of ISEcp1 at the right end of truncated orf477 is indicative of an ISEcp1-mediated transposition event in the bla CTX-M-64 gene. The emergence of CTX-M-64 by probable homologous recombination would suggest the natural potential of an alternative mechanism for the diversification of CTX-M-type β-lactamases.

ABSTRACTAcinetobacter baumanniiisolates T23, W35, and H1 were isolated from three patients who had been injured in the Haiti earthquake in January 2010. Those isolates, corresponding to two distinct clones, were identified as extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producers and found to beblaCTX-M-15-positive. That ESBL gene was associated with ISEcp1, involved in its acquisition by a one-ended transposition mechanism. In all isolates, the ISEcp1-blaCTX-M-15compound transposon was apparently chromosomally located.

ABSTRACTKlebsiella pneumoniaeKP3 was isolated from a patient transferred from India to the Sultanate of Oman.K. pneumoniaeKP3 was resistant to all β-lactams, including carbapenems, and expressed the carbapenem-hydrolyzing β-lactamase OXA-181, which differs from OXA-48 by four amino acid substitutions. Compared to OXA-48, OXA-181 possessed a very similar hydrolytic profile. TheblaOXA-181gene was located on a 7.6-kb ColE-type plasmid and was linked to the insertion sequence ISEcp1. The ISEcp1-mediated one-ended transposition ofblaOXA-181was also demonstrated.

Rotating parts of blood bank centrifuges are under heavy mechanical cyclic stresses due to their centrifugal loading conditions. Estimating the effective lifetime for these parts is very important for their application. Providing safety requirements for these components is mandatory in blood transfusion centers (BTC). Failure occurs in the engineering parts for both loading conditions of steady and cyclic. The fatigue phenomenon is the main reason for mechanical failures at least in 90 % of fractures during operation. In this paper, the effects of fatigue caused by centrifugal loadings on aluminum buckets produced by the Iranian Sina Ebtekar Company (ISECo) are investigated experimentally. In this study, 48 aluminum buckets are chosen from a set of 500 buckets. The numbers of service of the samples are accounted for a period of 7 months. Finite element analysis, FEM, is done for an aluminum bucket and the relevant maximum stresses due to the rotating loads of centrifugation are determined. Analyzing the numerical results and using the fatigue, lifetime diagrams according to the number of operating cycles is presented for the samples. A good consistency is observed between the experimental and numerical results. Based on the results, a new correlation is presented for estimating the aluminum bucket’s lifetime made by ISECO.

ABSTRACT We describe identification and functional characterization of ISEc11, a new insertion sequence that is widespread in enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC), in which it is always present on the virulence plasmid (pINV) and very frequently also present on the chromosome. ISEc11 is flanked by subterminal 13-bp inverted repeats (IRs) and is bounded by 3-bp terminal sequences, and it transposes with target specificity without generating duplication of the target site. ISEc11 is characterized by an atypical transposase containing the DEDD motif of the Piv/MooV family of DNA recombinases, and it is closely related to the IS1111 family. Transposition occurs by formation of minicircles through joining of the abutted ends and results in assembly of a junction promoter (PjuncC) containing a −10 box in the interstitial sequence and a −35 box upstream of the right IR. A natural variant of ISEc11 (ISEc11p), found on EIEC pINV plasmids, contains a perfect duplication of the outermost 39 bp of the right end. Upon circularization, ISEc11p forms a junction promoter (PjuncP) which, despite carrying −10 and −35 boxes identical to those of PjuncC, exhibits 30-fold-greater strength in vivo. The discovery of only one starting point in primer extension experiments rules out the possibility that there are alternative promoter sites within the 39-bp duplication. Analysis of in vitro-generated transcripts confirmed that at limiting RNA polymerase concentrations, the activity of PjuncP is 20-fold higher than the activity of PjuncC. These observations suggest that the 39-bp duplication might host cis-acting elements that facilitate the binding of RNA polymerase to the promoter.

Resumen

The most widely distributed blaCTX-M gene on a global scale is blaCTX-M-15. The dissemination has been associated with clonal spread and different types of mobile genetic elements. The objective of this review was to describe the genetic environments of the blaCTX-M-15 gene detected from Enterobacteriaceae in published literature from Africa. A literature search for relevant articles was performed through PubMed, AJOL, and Google Scholar electronic databases; 43 articles from 17 African countries were included in the review based on the eligibility criteria. Insertion sequences were reported as part of the genetic environment of blaCTX-M-15 gene in 32 studies, integrons in 13 studies, and plasmids in 23 studies. In this review, five insertion sequences including ISEcp1, IS26, orf447, IS903, and IS3 have been detected which are associated with the genetic environment of blaCTX-M-15 in Africa. Seven different genetic patterns were seen in the blaCTX-M-15 genetic environment. Insertion sequence ISEcp1 was commonly located upstream of the end of the blaCTX-M-15 gene, while the insertion sequence orf477 was located downstream. In some studies, ISEcp1 was truncated upstream of blaCTX-M-15 by insertion sequences IS26 and IS3. The class 1 integron (Intl1) was most commonly reported to be associated with blaCTX-M-15 (13 studies), with Intl1/dfrA17–aadA5 being the most common gene cassette array. IncFIA-FIB-FII multi-replicons and IncHI2 replicon types were the most common plasmid replicon types that horizontally transferred the blaCTX-M-15 gene. Aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes, and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes were commonly collocated with the blaCTX-M-15 gene on plasmids. Resumen

Objetivo: Elaborar e analisar a composição físico-química e sensorial de um bolo funcional isento de lactose e sacarose. Métodos: Trata-se de uma pesquisa experimental com delineamento transversal de abordagem quantitativa. Para verificar aceitação se aplicou os testes de escala hedônica e intenção de compra com 118 indivíduos, de ambos os sexos e idade entre 15 a 87 anos. As análises da composição físico-química foram realizadas no laboratório de Bromatologia e Bioquímica de Alimentos do Departamento de Nutrição da Universidade Federal do Piauí. A Análise Descritiva Quantitativa foi processada por 6 assessores treinados. Os dados obtidos foram analisados por estatística com auxílio do software SPSS versão 17. O estudo foi aprovado por Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa Resultados: A formulação obteve boa aceitação e 102 assessores não treinados informaram que comprariam o produto. O bolo apresentou 38,21% de umidade, 1,79 % de teor de cinzas, 4,25 % de proteínas, 32,01% de lipídeos, 23,67% de carboidratos e 399,86 kcal/100g. Observou-se que os atributos sensoriais como aroma, sabor, textura, dureza, cor e aeração foram semelhantes aos bolos convencionais. Conclusão: Portanto, é possível desenvolver produtos com ótima aceitação, nutritivo e funcional, para atender necessidades de pacientes intolerantes à lactose e diabéticos.

ABSTRACT The resistance of Klebsiella pneumoniae BM4493, isolated in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to cefotaxime and aztreonam was due to production of a novel β-lactamase, CTX-M-17. The bla CTX-M-17 gene was borne by 7,086-bp plasmid pIP843, which was entirely sequenced and which was found to belong to the ColE1 family. The 876-bp bla CTX-M-17 gene differed from bla CTX-M-14 by 2 nucleotides, which led to the single amino acid substitution Glu289→Lys. bla CTX-M-17 was flanked upstream by an ISEcp1-like element and downstream by an insertion sequence (IS) IS903 variant designated IS903-C. The transcriptional start site of bla CTX-M-17 was located 109 nucleotides upstream from the initiation codon in the ISEcp1-like element, which also provided the promoter sequences. Plasmid pIP843, which was non-self-transferable and nonmobilizable, contained five open reading frames transcribed in the same orientation. Regions homologous to sequences coding for putative RNA II and RNA I transcripts, a rom gene, which is involved in initiation of replication, and a cer-like gene, which is responsible for the stability of ColE1-like plasmids, were identified. Consensus sequences for putative replication (oriV) and transfer (oriT) origins were present. Results of primer extension experiments indicated that ISEcp1 provides the promoter for expression of bla CTX-M-17 and may contribute to dissemination of this gene.

Resumen

A doença celíaca é uma intolerância permanente ao glúten, e este é encontrado em cereais como trigo, o centeio, a cevada e a aveia, causando a atrofia das vilosidades intestinais. O objetivo deste trabalho foi desenvolver diferentes formulações de bolo de cacau isento de glúten e verificar sua aceitabilidade. Trata-se de um estudo do tipo quantitativo, exploratório e descritivo. A matéria prima para a elaboração dos bolos foi adquirida no comércio local. Foram desenvolvidos três tipos de bolos de cacau, utilizando três tipos diferentes de farinhas isentas de glúten: farinha de banana verde, farinha de arroz e fubá de milho. Os bolos foram elaborados no Laboratório de Técnica Dietética do Centro Universitário Estácio do Ceará. As amostras foram submetidas à análise microbiológica para detecção de coliformes e Salmonela sp. Para a avaliação da aceitação do bolo foi realizado um teste sensorial avaliando os atributos de aparência, cor, aroma, sabor, textura e aceitação global com 60 provadores não treinados. Com relação à análise microbiológica, todas as amostras apresentaram ausências dos grupos de microrganismos pesquisados. Na análise sensorial as amostras que obtiveram melhor média de aceitação foram os bolos desenvolvidos com farinha de arroz e fubá de milho. A formulação elaborada com farinha de banana verde diferiu significativamente das outras duas amostras em relação aos atributos avaliados, excetuando-se a cor. Dessa forma, conclui-se que a utilização de farinhas sem glúten para o desenvolvimento de bolos de cacau é aceitável, necessitando de adequação dos parâmetros sensoriais para algumas amostras.

Resumen

Com a intenção de minimizar a carência de produtos isentos de glúten e tendo em vista o crescente aumento de celíacos, a elaboração de produtos diferenciais a base de farinha de arroz e milho torna-se uma alternativa de consumo e comercialização. Assim, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos da adição de farinha de arroz e milho, e emulsificante nas características de qualidade (teste de cozimento, textura instrumental - firmeza e aceitabilidade) e físico-químicas (proteínas, lipídios, carboidratos, minerais e fibra alimentar) de formulações de macarrão, mediante o emprego de metodologia de planejamento de experimentos, fixando a concentração de ovos in natura (12%, m/m) e água (20%, v/m). A formulação com 40g de farinha de milho, 60g de farinha de arroz e 0,4g de SSL por 100g de farinha mista foi a que apresentou melhor resistência ao cozimento, menores perdas de sólidos na água de cocção (2,12% m/m), textura (30,40g seg-1) e aceitabilidade superior a 85 %. Além disso, o uso de farinha de arroz, associado à farinha de milho, proporciona fonte de minerais (152mg de K, 1,55mg de Fe, 46mg de Mg, 20mg de Ca por 100g), proteínas (~7%), carboidratos (52%) e fibras (~1%), importante suprimento nutricional para celíacos, por estes apresentarem perdas significativas destes nutrientes, devido à diarreia e à absorção restrita, característica da doença.

In September 1980 at the International Aeromedical Evacuation Congress held in Munich, West Germany, the International Society of Emergency Medical Services (ISEMS) was formed. The purpose of this new society is to develop, promote, and improve EMS throughout the world. The founding members came from sixteen nations and represented such regions as Africa, the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East.This new organization, ISEMS, provides a permanent, ongoing focal point for studies and serves as a global clearinghouse for EMS technical assistance, training, management, and evaluation. The Society remains on an international level, and its eligible membership consists of all persons who participate in EMS throughout the world. The publication of a scientific journal for all EMS personnel is planned. Through ISEMS, International Centers of Excellence will be established to provide technical assistance to countries for improvement of their EMS programs; training seminars and educational programs will also be sponsored. In addition, annually sponsored meetings in key cities in various countries of the world are planned.

Mobile genetic elements play an important role in the dissemination of antibiotic resistant bacteria among human and environmental sources. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the occurrence and patterns of integrons and insertion sequences of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli isolated from different sources in Navarra, northern Spain. A total of 150 isolates coming from food products, farms and feeds, aquatic environments, and humans (healthy people and hospital inpatients), were analyzed. PCRs were applied for the study of class 1, 2, and 3 integrons (intI1, intI2, and intI3), as well as for the determination of insertion sequences (IS26, ISEcp1, ISCR1, and IS903). Results show the wide presence and dissemination of intI1 (92%), while intI3 was not detected. It is remarkable, the prevalence of intI2 among food isolates, as well as the co-existence of class 1 and class 2 (8% of isolates). The majority of isolates have two or three IS elements, with the most common being IS26 (99.4%). The genetic pattern IS26–ISEcp1 (related with the pathogen clone ST131) was present in the 22% of isolates (including human isolates). In addition, the combination ISEcp1–IS26–IS903–ISCR1 was detected in 11 isolates being, to our knowledge, the first study that describes this genetic complex. Due to the wide variability observed, no relationship was determined among these mobile genetic elements and β-lactam resistance. More investigations regarding the genetic composition of these elements are needed to understand the role of multiple types of integrons and insertion sequences on the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance genes among different environments.

In ‘Our Future State: Advancing Queensland’s Priorities’ the Queensland Government outlined how industries and government should contribute to community well-being. Agriculture’s contribution lies in generating economic activity, job creation and the Great Barrier Reef protection. While lack of data prevents the measurement of some attributes in the government plan, composite sustainability indices have been used worldwide to represent the wider objectives of “triple bottom line” economics (growth and throughput), social justice (fair and equitable distribution of the wealth) and environment-friendliness (compatibility with the preservation of natural ecosystems). One such approach is an innovative self-designed iSENSE index—indicators of Sustainability: ENvironmental, Social, and Economic—that is based on 15 indicators with a maximum overall score of 30. The featured indicators are based on a literature review and represent commonly accepted parameters. In this study, iSENSE indicators have been enumerated for the analysis of three Queensland sectors: Agriculture, Mining, and Manufacturing. The results show that while Mining leads the group in terms of economic indicators, it is Agriculture that is the most socially oriented and environment-friendly. Overall, iSENSE score is equal 16 for both Agriculture and Mining, whilst Manufacturing stands at 13. While these results should be taken with caution, they can be used as a guidance for prospective policy proposals in conjunction with the sound ex post impact assessments around Queensland industries. Applying composite assessment tools can help to identify challenges related to environmental, economic and social impact, in the course of developing sustainable agriculture.

ABSTRACTWe examined the genetic context of 74 acquiredampCgenes and 17 carbapenemase genes from 85 of 640Enterobacteriaceaeisolates collected in 2009. Using S1 pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and Southern hybridization, 37 of 74blaAmpCgenes were located on large plasmids of different sizes belonging to six incompatibility groups. We used sequencing and PCR mapping to investigate the regions flanking the acquiredampCgenes. TheblaCMY-2-like genes were associated with ISEcp1; the surroundingblaDHAgenes were similar toKlebsiella pneumoniaeplasmid pTN60013 associated with IS26and thepspandsapoperons; and theblaACC-1genes were associated with IS26elements inserted into ISEcp1. All of the carbapenemase genes (blaVIM-1,blaIMP-22, andblaIMP-28) were located in class 1 integrons. Therefore, although plasmids are the main cause of the rapid dissemination ofampCgenes amongEnterobacteriaceae, we need to be aware that other mobile genetic elements, such as insertion sequences, transposons, or integrons, can be involved in the mobilization of these genes of chromosomal origin. Additionally, three new integrons (In846 to In848) are described in this study.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo verificar a qualidade microbiológica da pré-mistura de gelado de chocolate isento de lactose a base de farinha de inhame, sob tratamento a vácuo durante sessenta dias no Laboratório de Técnica Dietética da Faculdade Redentor. Os contaminantes microbiológicos analisados foram Salmonella spp/25g, Bacillus cereus, e coliformes a 45°/g. Os resultados obtidos mostraram ausência de Salmonella spp/25 e Bacillus cereus, entretanto a carga microbiana de coliformes a 45°, mesmo ocorrendo redução na amostra a vácuo, ultrapassou os limites estabelecidos pela RDC n° 12 de 2 de janeiro de 2001. Sendo assim, conclui-se que a embalagem a vácuo foi significante para a conservação do produto, sendo necessário apenas estabelecer medidas de controle que visam diminuir a contaminação inicial da pré-mistura por coliformes a 45°/g, para que o produto possa tornar seguro e pronto para o consumo.Palavras-chave: Salmonella, Bacillus cereus, coliformes fecais, isento de lactose.

Abstract Objectives To clarify the transmission mechanism of the blaCTX-M-64 gene between Escherichia coli and Salmonella isolates from food animals. Methods A total of 329 E. coli and 60 Salmonella isolates collected from food animals in 2016 were screened for the presence of blaCTX-M-64 genes. The blaCTX-M-64-positive isolates were typed and plasmid and chromosome DNA was sequenced to determine the genetic context of blaCTX-M-64 and the plasmid types present. Results The blaCTX-M-64 gene was identified in only three E. coli isolates but was the predominant gene in the Salmonella isolates (n = 9). These 12 CTX-M-64-positive isolates were all resistant to ampicillin, cefotaxime, ceftiofur, ceftriaxone, ceftazidime and florfenicol and 9 were resistant to ciprofloxacin. The blaCTX-M-64 gene was located on transferable IncI2 plasmids and an IncHI2 plasmid in three E. coli and one Salmonella isolate, respectively. The remaining eight Salmonella isolates contained blaCTX-M-64 integrated into the chromosome. Different genetic contexts of blaCTX-M-64 genes were found among the 12 isolates: ISEcp1-blaCTX-M-64-orf477-A/C on IncI2 plasmids of 3 E. coli isolates; ΔISEcp1-blaCTX-M-64-orf477-A/C in the chromosome of 1 Salmonella isolate; and ISEcp1-blaCTX-M-64-orf477 on the IncHI2 plasmid and chromosome of 8 Salmonella isolates. Conclusions To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of chromosomally encoded CTX-M-64 in Salmonella isolates. ISEcp1-mediated transposition is likely to be responsible for the spread of blaCTX-M-64 between different plasmids and chromosomes in Enterobacteriaceae especially E. coli and Salmonella.
