Resumen
The Introduction sets out the overall programme of the three-part Philosophy of Christian Life: the phenomenology of the devout life, the rhetorics of the word, and the metaphysics of love, focusing respectively on desire, language, and love in Christian life. It presents the work as philosophical in that it accepts the limits of human reason and common sense rather than revelation or dogma and is concerned to make or to justify some truth claims. It acknowledges that focusing on practice requires a different approach to truth from philosophies of religion that start with propositions about God: the example of Augustine as well as of some contemporary philosophers such as John Cottingham shows this to be nevertheless possible.

Resumen
This introductory chapter begins with a brief history of constitution-making and constitutional reform in the Islamic world. It then describes the emergence of a new constitutional era in the Middle East and beyond following World War II, and the two trends that characterized the early post-independence period in most Islamic countries, which were also reflected in the new constitutions: nationalism and secularism. It also discusses the development of Islamic constitutionalism in various Islamic countries. The chapter then sets out the book's purpose, which is to analyze the impact of the rise of political Islam on the development of key constitutional concepts in Islamic countries, and the extent to which the notion of constitutionalism has been transformed in these countries as a result. This is followed by an overview of the five parts of the book.

Resumen
The introduction describes the historical involvement of the state in the regulation of prostitution. It introduces the concept of public policy and its neglect in the academic literature on prostitution. We argue that the literature avoids a systematic discussion of public policy by focusing on a host of other factors that shape prostitution in society, such as large extraneous influences, broad (national) policy regimes, international human rights governance, discourse, broad shifts in governmentality. Instead, it is the concerted actions of national and local policy makers in designing regulation that shape the different manifestations of prostitution: the places where it is practised, the type of prostitution that is prevalent in a society, and the position and rights of sex workers. The chapter describes the three goals of the book: to provide an overview and critique of how prostitution policy has been analysed; to provide a policy analytical approach that both recognizes the particular challenges of the field and applies the concepts and tools of public policy analysis; and to provide suggestions for how policy-makers can move forward in establishing a fairer and more humane policy.

The electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the simplest, inexpensive, safest, and reproducible techniques that exist in medicine. During the current renaissance of electrocardiography, we need to improve how to interpret an ECG. This is especially important because currently the automatic interpretation still needs medical supervision. In spite of the great relevance of the ECG in the diagnosis of heart diseases, this section also includes a chapter that expresses the limitations of the ECG, entitled ‘The abnormal ECG without apparent heart disease and the normal ECG in serious heart disease: two extremes’.

The ‘Introduction’ chapter presents the concept of the entire ventilator system, whose understanding is crucial for the clinician performing mechanical ventilation. Mechanical ventilation is a risky, expensive, and error-prone therapy, the author asserts, which is why it is so important to understand not just the clinical application of ventilation, but also the equipment used in ventilation therapy. Furthermore, the ventilator must be viewed within the context of the larger ventilation system. This chapter defines the book’s audiences and discusses its value to them.

Resumen
This book gives a broad overview of the historical development of ideas about coercion, its current practice, and theory. It also considers future directions for research and clinical practice. Crucially it gives, for the first time, a global picture of these issues from those researching or working in mental health care across all continents. Coercion has always been a central concern in mental health care, and never more than now. The move away from asylums (deinstitutionalization) and into the community has widened the debate to all those with mental health problems rather than the much smaller group detained in institutions. The issues facing us now are consequently different and much more varied and wide ranging. This volume will bring the reader up to date regarding concepts, theories, and key issues pertaining to community coercion in different regions of the world.

This is a short chapter which describes the aims and the terminology of this book. This introductory chapter explains how the book is structured into five sections and which key concepts are included. It introduces the policy cycle, principles of prevention, and population-level approaches to prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). It is important to recognize that it is neither feasible nor desirable to devote all resources to prevention. This chapter shows that there are considerable areas of overlap and prevention; cure and care can be seen to exist on a continuum of activities that are needed to successfully tackle any disease, including NCDs.

Resumen
The UK government’s Offender Personality Disorder (OPD) strategy has provided a unique opportunity to revise the way in which health and criminal justice agencies collaborate in order to develop creative psychologically informed approaches to managing a complex group of individuals. This introduction to ‘Managing Personality Disordered Offenders: A Pathways Approach’ outlines the development and implementation of the strategy from the perspective of a consortium of mental health trusts—the London Pathways Partnership (LPP). It outlines the commissioning constraints in this particular geographical setting and details both the theoretical underpinnings and operational models used to implement the OPD pathway in community and secure settings. The chapter concludes with a review of the first four years of these services and a reappraisal of the strategic model.

Chapter 1 describes the book’s aims and scope. The main objective is to improve understanding of the Great Recession and its aftermath. The book provides a unified theoretical framework that uses dynamic general equilibrium models, or DGE, but dispenses with the rational expectations assumption. Its distinctive features are clean models with a rich institutional structure encompassing credit money, external finance, borrowing constraints, net worth, real estate, and commercial banks. Written for economists in universities, governments, and financial institutions, the book addresses an international audience.

This book explores the changing identities of extra-regular and non-monastic women from the early thirteenth through sixteenth centuries. It touches upon the social contributions of these women and the ways that fictive histories have obscured their voices. The introduction sets out the basics of the story that will be told. It both identifies major issues relating to the historical study of women and gender and questions the ways in which the history of women religious has affected modern perceptions. By unravelling the threads of this narrative, this study as a whole traces the way that a religious identity was both constructed for, and inextricably associated with, informal communities of pious laywomen.

Resumen
Mythographies were books that collected, explained, and interpreted myth-related material. Extremely popular during the Renaissance, these works appealed to a wide range of readers. While the European mythographies of the sixteenth century have been utilized by scholars, the short, early English mythographies, written from 1577 to 1647, have puzzled critics. The first generation of English mythographers did not, as has been suggested, try to compete with their Italian predecessors. Instead, they made mythographies into rhetorical instruments designed to intervene in topical debates outside the world of classical learning. Because English mythographers brought mythology to bear on a variety of contemporary issues, they unfold a lively and historically well-defined picture of the roles myth was made to play in early modern England. Exploring these mythographies can contribute to previous insights into myth in the Renaissance offered by studies of iconography, literary history, allegory, and myth theory.

The Introduction gives an overview of the elements and literary contexts of ancient dance discourse. It discusses in particular the modalities of ekphraseis of narrative and acrobatic dances, drawing attention to the specific conditions of a dynamic medium based on the human body, which may or may not convey a representational content. Finally, it argues that it is the double nature of dance, which is able both to represent entire myths and to be a performance of nothing but itself, that sparked highly sophisticated reflections on the relationship between dance and meaning in authors such as Apuleius and Nonnus. Dance in all its forms was seen as a cultural activity through which meanings are constantly negotiated, redefined, and reaffirmed.

Three simple forms of thought are fundamental to morality: treating others’ interests as important, respecting their equal status as agents, and being willing to join others as partners in a worthwhile cause. The aim of this book is to develop a substantive moral theory structured around this idea. To be successful, a theory of this kind must meet three constraints: it must be true, useful, and illuminating. The introduction specifies these constraints as a set of principles associated with Hume, Kant, Rousseau, Von Wright, Williams, Prichard, Aristotle, Hill, and Ross; and summarizes the structure of the book.

This chapter introduces the book’s central arguments as well as the theoretical account of norm translation that is developed through the in-depth analysis of contemporary donor-sponsored projects with village courts in rural Bangladesh. It opens with brief ethnographic accounts of a non-state court session and a courtyard meeting through which international donor agencies seek to promote transnational notions of the rule of law in rural Bangladesh. The chapter then outlines the overall argument of the book and its contributions to existing scholarship on the diffusion of norms and ideas as well as to research on non-state justice institutions and the rule of law. Subsequently, the chapter introduces Bangladesh’s recent political history, delineates the methodological approach, and reflects on the challenges of doing translation research. In conclusion, it outlines the overall structure of the book and summarizes the key arguments advanced in its individual chapters.

Resumen
Absolute Time: Rifts in Early Modern British Metaphysics explores the development of absolute time during one of Britain’s richest metaphysical periods, from the 1640s to the 1730s. This study is the first of its kind, although it connects to several existing bodies of literature. The Introduction places Absolute Time in the existing literature, and details it scope with regard to geography, historical period, and topic. The Introduction also sets out Absolute Time’s general developmental theses. First, the complexity of positions on time (and space) defended during this period is under-appreciated. Second, three distinct kinds of absolutism appeared during this wedge of philosophical history: Morean, Gassendist, and Newtonian. Finally, the Introduction provides an overview of the coming chapters.

The introductory chapter lays out the book’s research question, outlines its argument, identifies and critiques alternative arguments, locates its argument in the wider literature (academic, journalistic, and ‘grey’), explains the methodology, identifies the policy implications of the debate, and summarizes the chapters. The argument is offered not as an exhaustive final explanation but as the first of the ‘post-Chilcot’ accounts. Emphasizing the war’s intellectual and ideological roots, it puts ideas and doctrines back at the centre of the story, suggesting that the assumptions that drove Britain to war were more collectively shared and more enduring. Above all, it was Britain’s war, not just Blair’s.

This chapter traces the rise of Western war as ethical war since the end of the Cold War, that is, war that is claimed to be for the benefits of others, even where defence and security may also be a concern. It highlights that, against the prevailing hope for peace in the 1990s, the commitment to ethics came to justify and enable wars. It has also affected the practice of Western war, making a critical engagement with the phenomenon of ethical war urgent. The chapter further sets out the plan for the book, introducing the problematic of the politics of ethics.

The chapter starts by presenting the goals of the book in relation to the advancement of the study of party change, of political personalization, and of the relationship between them. It then examines the scope of the analysis (a comprehensive and integrative look at the two main phenomena, i.e., party change and political personalization), the level of analysis (country), and the research population (twenty-six countries). It notes that the study is about processes; it is not a static snapshot of the state of the parties or of personalized politics. It then presents the methodology that was selected: a broad-brush mapping of both phenomena rather than the use of proxies or of the best available data on a few indicators. Finally, the chapter presents a brief outline of the book.

The chapter explains the relevance, subject matter, structure, and method of the book. The book aims to challenge and explain the metaethical foundations of value-based arguments in constitutional reasoning. The chapter clarifies which value-based arguments are analysed, why we should study their metaethical foundations, what does it mean to challenge and explain them, and why constitutional adjudication is important in this context. In so doing, the chapter introduces the central concepts and themes explored in the book, motivates its philosophical approach, and provides a brief chapter overview.
