Resumen
Social networking sites and digital technologies have created opportunities for young people in India to establish virtual intimate connections. In this article, the authors analyze the intimate exchanges between young men on two different digital platforms – Facebook and Planet Romeo. An analysis of the intimate virtual exchanges reveals technologies of queer neoliberal subject formation within contemporary India. Queer neoliberal subject formation refers to the emergence of a sexual subject of rights, one that is a consumer-citizen within the Indian free-market economy. The article highlights two ways in which bodies are being queered within present day India. First, the authors discuss the case of run-away young men, whose bodies are marked as failure, a kind of ‘delinquent’ subject by an ensemble of state and civil-society formations. The young men are escaping violence from male elders, and poor living conditions in peri-urban Kolkata. Their bodies come to signify a queer figure within neoliberal notions of success and enterprise. Second, they interrogate the ways in which homosexuality is an emergent juridico–political category in India. The Supreme Court of India ruling on 11 December 2013, which reinstated the anti-sodomy provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC 377), is the site for the sedimentation of ‘homosexual’ as a subject of legal rights. The homosexual is being presented as a subject of conjugal love. Conjugality is represented as a private good, as the right to consume intimacy within private space. Representation of intimacy and celebration of conjugal love is found through the growth of dating websites in India along with the proliferation of media texts such as memes, poems and illustrative images found online commemorating conjugality. Our ethnographic analysis of the virtual exchanges among runaway young men and young gay identified men reveal how neoliberal subject formation in India remains incomplete.

Forty-two elderly individuals received partial or complete testing on: (a) the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale; (b) frequency of social interaction (quantity of social interaction); and (c) round-robin reports of disclosures among peers, that yielded whether the persons had reciprocally intimate relationships (quality of social interaction). It was found that depression was: (a) negatively correlated with the measure of the quantity of social interaction entailing frequent conversations; and (b) contrary to expectation, positively correlated with having reciprocally intimate relationships. Also, the individuals' intimacy of disclosure to peers was not correlated with the intimacy of disclosure received from them; indicating a lack of reciprocity of self-disclosure. The findings were interpreted as showing that depression in elderly individuals is negatively related to having peers to “talk to” frequently, but positively related to having reciprocal exchanges of negative communications.

Resumen
In Beirut, gay hook-up and mobile apps have become popular among men who want to arrange sex. These apps generate a new means for men to explore possibilities in their intimate lives, impacting the ways they create fantastical imaginaries of self, others, and sexual and social encounters. Focusing on the intimate biography of Nadir, in this paper I examine the relationship between fantasy and information in these media. I examine how Nadir exchanges, consumes and arranges information via media to create fantastical imaginaries about possible sex and pleasure, and to control possible outcomes in his intimate life. Once Nadir moves his interactions offline, he relies on information flows to evaluate the strength of his intimate relations. This article contributes to debates on the role of fantasy in digital cultures by examining how fantasy in digital media becomes informational, grounded to sociocultural systems of signification and communications and is negotiated within imaginative horizons of intimate possibilities.

Resumen
Through her versatile use of video technology, Nina Sobell explores nonverbal means of communication that interfere with normative modes of behavior and closely regulated interpersonal relationships. Deeply informed by the pursuit of intimate connections, her practice fosters reflection on how we modulate our sense of selfhood through interactions with others. This article examines Sobell’s video performances with chicken carcasses, instantiating the ambiguities of mother- infant relationships, in connection with her Brainwave Drawings, a series of installations based on biofeedback that unveils reciprocal influences between art participants’ psychic states. Even though these sets of works were developed during the same time frame (1974–82) and are equally concerned with bodily communication, they are almost never interpreted as conceptually related. Underscoring their mutual affiliation with a feminist agenda, this article argues that these works are deeply intertwined at the level of their interrogation of socially sanctioned forms of interaction. Embracing the dynamics of open systems, Sobell cultivates fluid forms of communication and exposes the invisible threads that connect us to others. She relies on technological mediation in order to advance a more complex understanding of the biological and social underpinnings of selfhood. Sobell’s works invite viewers to consider interpersonal exchanges that surpass linguistic forms of communication and reveal the porous thresholds between body and mind, self and other, nature and culture.

Resumen
Abstract The “sphere of intimacy” is increasingly mediated by a socio-technical network inlaid with new meanings and readings in love and seduction games. In these affective-digital exchanges, nudes are essential in linking interest between partners, also setting spaces for power struggles and violence. This work aims to analyze the prevailing moralities, the emotional management, and the inclusion of the body in affirming autonomy and diversity identified in the statements of young people whose intimate contents were disseminated on the internet without their consent. We analyzed 20 videos of young YouTubers who had such an experience from the Critical Discourse Analysis perspective. The statements carry discursive forces of “venting”, “testimony”, and, above all, “counseling”. The narrated experiences highlight the dynamics of disseminating these intimate contents and how they differently affect the representations of face and social recognition of boys and girls. Handling suffering techniques vary between resignation in the face of patriarchal order and overcoming and autonomy discourses. We also highlight the initiatives of these young people in managing intimate images and a political stance on the use and expression of their bodies.

Resumen
This paper explores the similarities between ordinary conversation and intimate letters, with focus on the devices used in the epistolary form to imitate the primary genre of conversational interaction. The comparison is based on a speech-based model that draws on Bakhtin’s pragmatic theory of the utterance and of speech genres and on the Conversation Analysis perspective, according to which conversational discourse emerges through the turn system and the sequential relationships within the turn-taking activity. The study concludes that epistolary form is an endeavour by the correspondents to compensate for the absence of shared time and space through such means as negotiation of meaning through internal reading, writing to the moment, mapping the writer’s coordinates, the I-You reversibility, and the achievement of such joint projects as adjacency pairs or longer series of turn exchanges. All these devices are illustrated based on a selection of letters from the renowned courtship correspondence between Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett (1845-1846).

Resumen
Abstract Rhetorical tropes of intimate friendship (you 友) employed in the classical era in China present a stark contrast to those that survive in Latin and classical Greek sources. For this ideal form of friendship was described far less often in terms of the material and psychic advantages that can accrue from alliances outside the immediate family circle than in terms of the propensity for true friendships to foster the development of the singular traits and potentials of each partner in the intimate friendship. This essay argues, contra many social historians, that moderns cannot extract any underlying social realities from the early discussions of the theme, even if our sources allow us to see how certain social exchanges were construed, valued, and promoted by members of the governing elite.

Resumen
In recent years technology has developed significantly and rapidly become an intricate part of people’s daily life in the globalised world. There is a growing recognition that within intimate relationships, technology usage has many functions which can create both negative and positive impacts on intimacy.  Yet research on intimacy in online social relationships is still underdeveloped. This paper maps the literature on long-distance relationships and how its participants use information and communication technologies to overcome the physical detachment. The purpose of this study is to examine whether intimacy changes over Erasmus+ exchange studies in long-distance romantic and parental relationships. Data from an online survey of 100 Erasmus+ exchange students residing in Budapest, Hungary were analysed to see whether the quality of their relationship worsens during the exchange period. Based on the data collected it can be concluded that the majority of respondents does not experience critical decay in neither of their relationships and that preparation for distance communication with ICTs is not strongly connected to preventing a decay in intimacy.

Resumen
A Mediated Intimacy; Art, Technology and Exchange in the Digital Age examines the role of intimacy in the technologically extended work of art. The text posits that there are three strategies that the technologically extended work of art uses to create mediated intimacy. These strategies are technological completion, where the viewer/participant completes the work; technological exchange, where the viewer/participant enters into an exchange with the work; and technological displacement, where the viewer is displaced from their time and place and occupies a new co-constructed space. The strategies are analyzed through the theories of subjectivities of the self, and Foucault’s approach to inter-subjective exchanges is employed to understand how they function. The strategies are further demonstrated through analysis of works by Gary Hill, Janet Cardiff and Martine Neddam. A concrete example of the three strategies is presented in an original mobile media based project, Cite, Site, Sight: Richmond.

Mentzer, Julianne. "The textuality of friendship : homosocial hermeneutic exchanges in early modern English drama". Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/16009.

Resumen
My thesis argues that textually embedded intimacy and exclusivity between men opens up ethical problems concerning the use of education and persuasive powers—the ability to reconfigure vice as virtue, to argue a case for transgressions, and to navigate political, economic, and social spheres for personal self-advancement. My argument is based first on the proposition that masculine elite friendship in the early modern period is situated in specific pedagogical practices, engagement with particular rhetorical manuals and classical texts, and manipulation of texts which determine the affectionate, ‘textual', nature of these relationships. From this, I propose, second, that a hermeneutic process of rhetorical and poetic composition and exclusionary understanding is embedded within these textual relationships. From these two propositions, I analyse the textual surface of homosocial relationships in order to ask questions about ethical dilemmas concerning the forms of power they represent. How can an enclosed system of affection be useful for political, social, or financial advancement by making a vice (self-interest) of a virtue (fidelity), a dubious idea in the early modern period? How are homosocial networks developed and depicted through an engagement with their own textuality? Are they shown as transgressive and dangerous in further marginalizing those who are not privy to the system of textual exchange between men? The creation of homosocial male friendships is predicated on the idea that there are shared texts and methodologies for internalizing ideas from classical sources (imitatio) and for using these as starting points for the creation of arguments (inventio) to suit social, political, and even domestic situations. I focus on fictitious relationships developed in early modern English drama—as playwrights represent masculine discourse, textual knowledge, and rhetorical techniques. The friendships and fellowships in these dramatic productions contain questions about the use of masculine networks in socio-political and economic navigation.

Sizaire, Laure. "Des romances au-delà des frontières : la globalisation genrée du marché matrimonial : échanges intimes, expériences migratoires et réflexivités sur le genre dans les conjugalités franco-postsoviétiques (1990-2015)". Electronic Thesis or Diss., Lyon, 2021. http://www.theses.fr/2021LYSE2043.

This thesis focuses on the extension of spouses' recruitment areas beyond borders and aims to shed light on the important transformations that have affected transnational unions since the 1990s. On the one hand, it intends to understand the sociological and historical conditions of the increase of these unions and, on the other hand, to question their eminently gendered character. To do this, the thesis is devoted to the analysis of French-Post-Soviet conjugality and unfolds in a kaleidoscopic way: combining qualitative and quantitative methods and navigating between different fieldworks (Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, France), it varies the scales of observation in order to access the dynamics of the globalization of the marriage market. The thesis also presents a research path: it moves from a socio-historical analysis of situated gender regimes producing (in)desirable masculinities and femininities, to a multi-sited ethnography of global matrimonial matchmaking where these gender projects are central, through a quantitative study of the capitals that circulate and are exchanged on the globalized matrimonial market. From there, the thesis dives into the complexity and thickness of life-courses by mirroring the paths of post-Soviet women and French men engaged in a transnational marriage. If the first ones testify to projects where matrimonial and migratory aspects are intertwined, the second ones are above all in a quest for social ascension where the professional aspect prevails. From these parallel life-courses, however, points of encounter emerge: at the heart of intimate interactions, with their share of adjustments and maladjustment, emerge reflexivities on gender produced both by the migratory experience and by transnational conjugality

Winston, Brianne L. "The Influence of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) on Marital Relationships". Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42795.

Texto completo
Resumen
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) on marital relationships. MCI refers to age-related decline in memory and other cognitive processes that do not necessarily interfere with daily activities or the maintenance of social relationships with others (Petersen et al., 1999). Using social exchange theory as the theoretical framework to guide this qualitative study, aspects of the marital relationship explored from the nonimpaired spouses’ perspective were couple interaction, intimacy, and the division of household labor. In-depth interviews were conducted with five husbands and five wives (M age = 76.6 yrs., S.D. = 6.64). Open-ended interview questions that focus on issues specific to the marital relationship included: (a) range of activities participated in as a couple, (b) ways of showing care or affection toward one another, and (e) management of everyday life. In addition to participating in the semi-structured interviews, the spouses completed three standardized scales (e.g., Revised Memory & Behavior Problems Checklist, Zarit Burden Interview, Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale). Their responses to these measures provided information about the memory and behavioral changes of the elder as it related to the outcomes for and responses of the spouse. Spouses noted both change and stability within their marriages. They expressed “mixed emotions” concerning the influence of MCI on both them as individuals and on their relationship. Husbands’ responses focused on the negative relationship outcomes (e.g., frustration, stress) associated with caring for a spouse with memory loss; however, wives reported higher levels of burden and depression on the standardized measures than did the husbands. Gender differences were found regarding how husbands and wives view their roles in context to the caregiving situation, as well as how they adapt and cope. Longitudinal research is needed to examine the changes in the dynamics of these late-life marital relationships over time.

Privacy is a serious concern of users in daily usage of social networks. Social networks are a valuable data source for large-scale studies on social organization and evolution and are usually published in anonymized forms. This thesis addresses three privacy problems of social networks: graph anonymization, private community detection and private link exchange. First, we tackle the problem of graph anonymization via uncertainty semantics and differential privacy. As for uncertainty semantics, we propose a general obfuscation model called Uncertain Adjacency Matrix (UAM) that keep expected node degrees equal to those in the unanonymized graph. We analyze two recently proposed schemes and show their fitting into the model. We also present our scheme Maximum Variance (MaxVar) to fill the gap between them. Using differential privacy, the problem is very challenging because of the huge output space of noisy graphs. A large body of existing schemes on differentially private release of graphs are not consistent with increasing privacy budgets as well as do not clarify the upper bounds of privacy budgets. In this thesis, such a bound is provided. We introduce the new linear scheme Top-m-Filter (TmF) and improve the existing technique EdgeFlip. Thorough comparative evaluation on a wide range of graphs provides a panorama of the state-of-the-art's performance as well as validates our proposed schemes. Second, we present the problem of community detection under differential privacy. We analyze the major challenges behind the problem and propose several schemes to tackle them from two perspectives: input perturbation (LouvainDP) and algorithm perturbation (ModDivisive)

"Dyadic Outcomes of Gratitude Exchange between Family Caregivers and their Siblings". Doctoral diss., 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.24930.

Texto completo
Resumen
abstract: Family caregivers are a quickly growing population in American society and are potentially vulnerable to a number of risks to well-being. High stress and little support can combine to cause difficulties in personal and professional relationships, physical health, and emotional health. Siblings are, however, a possible source of protection for the at-risk caregiver. This study examines the relational and health outcomes of gratitude exchange between caregivers and their siblings as they attend to the issue of caring for aging parents. Dyadic data was collected through an online survey and was analyzed using a series of Actor-Partner Interdependence Models. Intimacy and care conflict both closely relate to gratitude exchange, but the most significant variable influencing gratitude was role. Specifically, caregivers are neither experiencing nor expressing gratitude on the same level as their siblings. Expressed gratitude did not relate strongly or consistently to well-being variables, though it did relate to diminished negative affect. Implications for theory, the caregiver, the sibling, the elder, the practitioner, and the researcher are addressed in the discussion.

Resumen
The narrative of the birth of internet culture often focuses on the achievements of American entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley, but there is an alternative history of internet pioneers in Europe who developed their own model of network culture in the early 1990s. Drawing from their experiences in the leftist and anarchist movements of the ’80s, they built DIY networks that give us a glimpse into what internet culture could have been if it were in the hands of squatters, hackers, punks, artists, and activists. In the Dutch scene, the early internet was intimately tied to the aesthetics and politics of squatting. Untethered from profit motives, these artists and activists aimed to create a decentralized tool that would democratize culture and promote open and free exchange of information.

Resumen
An ethnographic study of music, performance, migration, and circulation, this book examines how forms of love and intimacy are linked to changing conceptions of political solidarity and forms of belonging, through the lens of Nepali dohori song. The book describes dohori: improvised, dialogic performed poetry that is sung, in which a witty repartee of exchanges is based on poetic couplets with a fixed rhyme scheme, often backed by instrumental music and accompanying dance, performed between men and women, with a primary focus on romantic love. The book tells the story of dohori’s relationship with changing ideas of Nepal as a nation-state, and how different concepts of national unity have incorporated marginality, in the intersectional arenas of caste, indigeneity, class, gender, and regional identity. In the aftermath of Nepal’s ten-year civil war, changing political realities, increased migration, and circulation of people, media, and practices are redefining concepts of appropriate intimate relationships and their associated systems of exchange. Through multi-sited ethnography of performances, media production, circulation, reception, and the daily lives of performers and fans in Nepal and the United Kingdom, this book examines how people use dohori to challenge (and uphold) social categories, while also creating affective solidarities.

Resumen
AbstractWhile close relations include both intimate family members and close friends, the transmission of socioeconomic resource remains largely confined within families. Moreover, family-transmitted values and sociopsychological skills are incorporated during childhood, and emotional and instrumental support is still mainly assumed by family members. These overlapping exchanges mean that family ties constitute durable resource for individuals, but that families are (also) damaging in case of tie dissolution, poor relational quality or gendered family practices. In this chapter, we examine how family and friends affect vulnerability processes differently by using three longitudinal datasets on long-term couples, lone parents, and ageing individuals, as well cross-sectional data on adults’ personal networks, collected with support from LIVES. We found that ambivalent and sometimes negative (i.e., resource depletion) aspects of family relationships emerge, in particular, in situations in which other key resources (including friendship ties) are missing, typically with the occurrence of stressful life events. Conversely, negative family events are more quickly overcome when sufficient resources (including friends) are available. Interestingly, some negative life events, such as job loss, are better dealt with through sparser personal networks. By contrast, normative life events act as densifiers or enlargers of both elective and family networks.

AbstractCompared to other branches of the welfare state unemployment compensation was enacted later and in much lesser countries. This chapter examines the introduction and spread of unemployment compensation schemes across the globe until 1950. We argue that unemployment insurance was (and still is) the most controversial social protection scheme, which, in addition, is intimately tied to the existence of complementary institutions such as capitalist labour markets and employment exchanges. Programme adoption therefore only occurred in economically developed countries crucially facilitated by interstate war and deep economic crises. Both world wars and the Great Depression set-off shock waves across the globe, which not only created tremendous social needs but also opened a (short) window of opportunity for the introduction and reform of unemployment insurance.

Allergic reactions induced by kissing and other intimate interpersonal acts can present significant obstacles for spontaneous interactions for those with certain allergies. In both articles, passionate kissing—a seemingly subjective qualifier—marks an interaction as potentially precarious or even as deadly. In this chapter, I continue to trouble the assumption that food allergies demand isolated and individualized accommodations. In so doing, I challenge ideas about which types of accommodations are desirable, or safe. Through a discussion of risks associated with kissing and intercourse, including allergies, as well as HIV, and other viruses and bacteria, I also discuss consent and pleasure as key aspects to help navigate intimacy to mitigate risk

Resumen
Cavitating bubbly flows are encountered in many engineering problems involving propellers, pumps, valves, ultrasonic biomedical applications, … etc. In this contribution an OpenMP parallelized Euler-Lagrange model of two-phase flow problems and cavitation is presented. The two-phase medium is treated as a continuum and solved on an Eulerian grid, while the discrete bubbles are tracked in a Lagrangian fashion with their dynamics computed. The intimate coupling between the two description levels is realized through the local void fraction, which is computed from the instantaneous bubble volumes and locations, and provides the continuum properties. Since, in practice, any such flows will involve large numbers of bubbles, schemes for significant speedup are needed to reduce computation times. We present here a shared-memory parallelization scheme combining domain decomposition for the continuum domain and number decomposition for the bubbles; both selected to realize maximum speed up and good load balance. The Eulerian computational domain is subdivided based on geometry into several subdomains, while for the Lagrangian computations, the bubbles are subdivided based on their indices into several subsets. The number of fluid subdomains and bubble subsets are matched with the number of CPU cores available in a share-memory system. Computation of the continuum solution and the bubble dynamics proceeds sequentially. During each computation time step, all selected OpenMP threads are first used to evolve the fluid solution, with each handling one subdomain. Upon completion, the OpenMP threads selected for the Lagrangian solution are then used to execute the bubble computations. All data exchanges are executed through the shared memory. Extra steps are taken to localize the memory access pattern to minimize non-local data fetch latency, since severe performance penalty may occur on a Non-Uniform Memory Architecture multiprocessing system where thread access to non-local memory is much slower than to local memory. This parallelization scheme is illustrated on a typical non-uniform bubbly flow problem, cloud bubble dynamics near a rigid wall driven by an imposed pressure function.

Resumen
This paper presents a soft-sensing technique of determining the mass flow rate of a liquid-liquid heat exchanger using temperature measurements and a distributed parameter model. The efficiency of a heat exchanger is intimately related to its mass flow rate and as a consequence mass flow rate measurements are essential for any fault detection or monitoring program of the heat exchanger. However the costly mass flow rate sensor measurements can be bypassed by this soft-sensing technique which primarily employs measurements from inexpensive temperature sensors. We first develop a distributed parameter model of the counter flow type heat exchanger using energy balance equations. Thereafter, a state-space model of the heat exchanger is formulated using orthogonal collocation method where temperature at the collocation points and the unknown mass flow rate are considered as the state variables. The mass flow rate is estimated by a Hybrid Extended Kalman Filter algorithm using the outlet temperature measurements. The sensitivity of the soft-sensing technique in presence of modeling errors and measurement noise is also studied using a suitable simulation example.

Resumen
The paper explores two phenomena powerful in life and interpretive terms: the heart and deification. One is understood as deeply human, the other as metaphysically appealing. It is a connection present in the history of Christian thinking for a long time, since the heart is perceived as an inner space where God meets man, in the most intimate form, which can only acquire the character of unification. Deification, as the experience of Christian mystics and mystics shows, basically means the deepest unification with God and activation of the change in God’s love. The issue examined in the paper is presented in the form of a brief guide to the theological concept of deification, and also the convergence of the historical and biblical views of the heart. The core of thinking about the topic is the interpretation of the heart as an inner image the (heart as the center, exchange of hearts) and the interpretation of the phenomenality of deification in the context of written mystical experience.

Texto completo
Resumen
In this work plastic micro channel systems were investigated as a potential device for micro solvent extraction of rare earth elements. The proposed microfluidic structures are made by laser welding of three layers of inexpensive thermoplastic films which form separate paths (top and bottom channels) for each of the immiscible fluids. The middle layer is perforated in order to provide contact between two fluids and to enable the extraction process. Experiments were performed to show that two different immiscible fluids (water and 1-octanol) can flow through the fabricated device and exit at separate outlets without mixing even when those fluids get into close contact within the main channel. Experimental results for single devices show that immiscible fluids can be brought into intimate contact and then separated with compliant polymeric microfluidic devices. The transfer of a compound from one immiscible fluid to the other was verified by dye exchange between the immiscible fluids. The same fabrication method is a promising technique for fabrication of massively parallel systems with larger throughput.

Resumen
The performance of indirect thermal storage systems is critically dependent on the degree of thermal contact between the energy storage medium and the energy transfer medium. For liquid-liquid systems, the energy transfer occurs across a heat exchanger for which the overall effectiveness is determined by both tube-side and storage-side convection coefficients. While the tube-side convection is essentially constant throughout a draw at a constant flow rate, the storage-side convection process depends intimately on the natural convection flow driven by the temperature difference between the two fluids. This temperature difference is inherently transient during the discharge process. In the present work, analytical models are developed which predict system behavior for constant and variable heat exchanger effectiveness. The accuracy of each model is quantified in relation to empirical data obtained by Liu et al. [1, 2] in a physical system motivated by application to integral collector storage (ICS) solar water heating devices. From analysis of the empirical data, discharge-averaged values in the constant effectiveness model and in the variable effectiveness model are determined for a range of empirical conditions. The results show that the initial flow transients generated by the start of the discharge process are flow rate dependent and have a significant impact on the observed overall heat transfer coefficients.

Resumen
"This study is a qualitative study that explores the interdependence experiences of college students who participated in role play-oriented cooperative learning using case research methods. In the post-COVID-19 learning environment, interaction in a non-face-to-face environment is more emphasized. Therefore, this study attempted to examine specific aspects of how interdependence between learners is practiced in cooperative learning and discover the meaning of interdependence experience through this. Data collection was conducted focusing on class participation observation, in-depth interview, student class review, and reports. As a result of the study, learners' interdependence practice was ‘achieved through responsibility’, ‘clear goal sharing’, and ‘emotional exchange’, and the experience of interdependence was derived as 'becoming a subjective learner', 'improving communication skills', and 'discovering positive meanings of cooperation'. Based on the research results, for effective interaction in non-face-to-face classes, intimacy between teams, clear structuring of classes, expansion of interactions with other teams, and appropriate feedback from instructors were suggested."

Texto completo
Resumen
The high energy density available from polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell systems makes them attractive sources of portable power. A key consideration for minimum weight portable power systems is that they must operate simultaneously at water balance (no external water supply) and thermal balance (controlled temperature). Water and thermal management are intimately linked since evaporation is a potent source of cooling. The cell’s electrochemical performance and the ambient environment determine the rates of water production and transport as well as heat generation and removal. This paper presents the basic design relationships that govern water and thermal balance in PEM fuel cell stacks and systems. Hydrogen/air and direct methanol fuel cells are both addressed and compared. Operating conditions for simultaneous water and thermal balance can be specified based on the cell’s electrochemical performance and the operating environment. These conditions can be used to specify the overall size and complexity of the cooling equipment needed in terms of the “UA” product of the heat exchangers. The water balance properties can have strong effects on the size of the thermal management equipment required.

Texto completo
Resumen
During the last quarter of the 20th century, cross-cultural research established that the meaning of interpersonal behavior can be described in terms of a universal structure that includes, among others, the notions of association (affiliation), superordination (dominance), and intimacy. While researchers generally agree on most of these universal dimensions, little is known about their origins –the whys and the wherefores of these structures. An approach designed to explain the emergence of the meaning of interpersonal behavior is the focus of this chapter. This approach is based on the assumption that social behavior involves the exchange of material and psychological resources, a process guided by a number of natural constraints operating on human interaction. The chapter outlines this theoretical system and discusses the emergence of the primary features of meaning over long periods of time. It reviews formal analyses of information gleaned from literary documents of different historical periods and cultures, including the works of Homer, Hesiod, and Theophrastus, as well as other sources (e.g., medieval European literature). It concludes with a discussion of how this approach can account for various social-psychological phenomena and can lead to the development of a useful theory of culture for psychology.

Texto completo
Resumen
Controlling complex network systems is challenging because network systems are highly coupled by ensembles and behaving with uncertainty. A network is composed by nodes and edges. Edges serve as the connection between nodes to exchange state information and further achieve state consensus. Through edges, the dynamics of individual nodes at the local level intimately affects the network dynamics at the global level. As a following bird can occasionally lose visual contact with the target bird in a flock at any moment, the edge between two nodes in a real world network systems is not necessarily always intact. Contrary to common sense, these real-world networks are usually perfectly stable even when the edges between the nodes are unstable. This suggests that not only nodes are dynamical, edges are dynamical, too. Since the edges between the nodes are changing dynamically, network configuration is also dynamical. Further, edges need be defined and quantified so that the unstable connection behavior can be properly described. The paper explores the concepts of statistical mechanics and statistical entropy to address the particular need. Statistical mechanics describes the behavior of a mechanical system that has uncertain states. Statistical entropy on the other hand defines the distribution of the microstates by probability. Entropy provides a measure of the level of network integrity. With entropy, one can assign desired dynamics to the network to ensure desired network property. This work aims to construct a complex network structure model based on the edge dynamics. Coupled with node self-dynamic and consensus law, a general dynamical network model can be constructed.

Tuwhera Open Access, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.24135/link2021.v2i1.125.

Resumen
The concept of “Homeodynamic Environments and Products” is proposed to understand the environment-product-human organism relationship from the inseparable connection between body, mind and spirituality. This concept is coined by the co-founders of the DASMind – UNICAMP [iar.unicamp.br/dasmind]. Three pillars guide the applications of the “Homeodynamic Environments and Products” concept: [1] “Homeodynamic Architectural Environments,” preventive and/or restorative, relate to applying the concept to the study, planning, design and construction of architectural environments. This pillar aims to analyze and understand the user’s environments, whether residential, educational, cultural, corporate, commercial, among others, in the body, mind, spirituality relationship. Whether in the design or physical sphere, it reveals the cooperation between the architectural elements and the human organism to restore the body’s homeodynamic balance, aiming at its health and well-being. Associated with smart biointerfaces (ZUANON, 2013-2020), this pillar also evaluates and verifies the level of homeodynamic quality of environments in their various purposes: care; cure; labor; exchange of knowledge; leisure; among others. Based on the evaluation, it proposes design solutions conducive to the inner balance of its users, aligned with the purpose of each environment. [2] “Homeodynamic Urban Environments” are supported by urban fabrics, although they do not necessarily represent a simple change of scale, from the architectural scale to the urban scale. In other words, reflecting on the relationships that aim to promo or restore the health and well-being of individuals, as inhabitants or users of the city, in many cases relates to the actual scale of urban design, to the interstice of buildings, to green areas, to small squares and other open urban environments (ZUANON et al., 2020). Moreover, this pillar signals a throwback to classic urban planners who were pioneers in focusing on spatial perception and the relationships of territoriality, privacy, personalization and crowding (MONTEIRO and TURCZYN, 2018). The various humanization studies also provide valuable groundwork for “Homeodynamic Urban Environments,” which, alongside smart biointerfaces (ZUANON, 2013-2020), transfer important contributions to design and the implementation of healthy cities. [3] “Homeodynamic Products,” whether preventive and/or restorative, relate to the study, design and development of physical, digital and/or physical-digital products capable of “feeling” and “reacting” in real time and empathically to the neuropsychophysiological condition of their users, without interrupting the performance of their routine activities. This pillar operates in deep convergence with smart biointerfaces. In this sense, it correlates contributions from affective computing, cognitive computing, computer vision and wearable computing with the transdisciplinary and complex framework of its concept (ZUANON, 2013-2020). In this intimate connection with the human organism, homeodynamic products provide access to and interaction with the neurobiological scale of affects, emotions and feelings, during different experiences centered on the human being, whether in architectural or urban environments. Furthermore, they enable a consistent interpretation of the body’s overall conditions in response to the somatosensory and sensorimotor stimuli produced by those environments. Thus, in establishing a direct relationship with the human organism, “Homeodynamic Environments and Products,” whether preventive and/or restorative, in their architectural, urban and object scales, prove to be greatly relevant to life regulation and survival, in both current and future social contexts.

Resumen
The article clarifies the features of interactive relationships, which are modeled by the addresser of modern media text for maximum impact on the addressee. The author controls the perception of the text, focusing on linguistic competence and an objective picture of the reader’s world. A pragmatic approach to journalistic text makes it possible to identify explicit and implicit forms of dialogue: modeling feedback and interactive settings that can turn a hypothetical reader into a real one, adapting to the addressee’s language thesaurus. Discursive openness to the exchange of views with the addressee leads to the fact that the entire media text becomes a guarantee of commonality of addresser-addressee interpretations. The difference between the addresser and the addressee is minimized, their connection is strengthened through the combination of linguistic consciousness, which, in turn, forms a special structure and semantics of the journalistic text, in which the emphasis is not on I but on the Other. The addressee in some implicit or explicit form is always in all segments of the media text, and the author establishes a trusting relationship with the reader through the phatic linguistic means that the addressee relates to himself. Approaching the addressee is a sign of modern journalistic texts, which show a tendency to dialogue and democratization of forms of mass communication, and their characteristic feature is the actualization in the center of attention of the addressee, latent (mediated by written text) dialogue with which is modeled as real. The addressee in the process of establishing contact with the author of the media text also becomes the part of broad cognitive space. This opportunity is realized if the journalist has different types of competence – communicative and procedural, that is, is able to compare their own thesaurus, their own knowledge with the thesaurus and the picture of the world of his reader. Modern journalism is characterized by the search for contact with the addressee and new effective models of influence and intimacy of relationships that contribute to the creation of a single cognitive space for both, which, in turn, will allow the recipient to move from knowledge to understanding.
