Fluke Calibration is accredited for gas flow measurements in the range of 0.1 sccm to 6000 slm in nitrogen and air. Traceability is maintained directly through a gravimetric f low standard but only recently from 1 sccm to 10 sccm. The traceability of flow in the range of 0.1 sccm to 1 sccm is based on extrapolation of the use of laminar flow elements (LFE) below 1 sccm. This part of the range has never been completely verified through interlaboratory comparisons, proficiency testing or other means of measurement assurance. In an internal document from DH Instruments in the early 1990s it was suggested that a piston gauge might improve traceability for very low gas flows. In order to prove out traceability in this range an attempt was made to use a piston gauge using a piston-cylinder size of 35 mm diameter as a reference. One reason for choosing a piston gauge as a reference is its pressure control. This is crucial when measuring gas flow through a LFE in this design and range. In addition, the effective area is known to within 0.001 %, leaving the vertical displacement of the piston to dominate the uncertainty of the dimensional part of the flow test. This was a challenge because the measurements required absolute mode and the internal piston position sensor supplied with the piston gauge did not have sufficient precision. This paper describes the theory and design of the gas flow measurement system, the current results, and improvements desired or suggested. Two different designs are discussed, one with a single piston gauge as a reference and one with two piston gauges measuring flow on either side of the laminar flow element. Note: sccm (standard cubic centimeters per minute) is an industry accepted alternative to kg/s [1]. It is used out of convenience to normalize flow rates of gases with significant differences in density.

Resumen

The evaluation of the efficiency of investments relies on a system of measures based on actuarial techniques that consider the time value of money. One of the common measures used is the Internal Rate of Return (IRR). Commonly, by applying of the efficiency evaluation criteria, result consistent outcomes. In this paper, the author tries to highlight that, based on its theoretical assumptions and practical drawbacks, considering of this measure in evaluation of the investments decisions may lead to erroneous decision. Despite the fact that the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) has never had a favorable academic press, the surveys outline that financial managers seem just to enjoy this measure. The aim of this paper is to summarize the drawbacks of this indicator and to offer a presentation of the Modified Internal Rate of Return (MIRR), as a solution to express a project performance by using of a percentage measure concomitant to discard the unrealistic assumption of reinvestment of cash flow stream just at the value of the IRR, allowing a straightforward calculation.

Resumen

The physical model of the spectral responsivity of trap detectors consists of multiple parameters such as the internal quantum efficiency and the spectral reflectance. In some measurement models, the spectral reflectance of trap detectors is approximated by fitting a wavelength dependence equation which does not consider the effect of the oxide thickness of the silicon photodiode. To analyze the uncertainty due to the oxide thickness variation, a thin film reflectance model is set up in the Standards and Calibration Laboratory (SCL) for the evaluation of the spectral reflectance of trap detectors. The model is based on the Fresnel coefficients of a three-layer thin-film structure which consists of air and a thin-film oxide layer on a silicon substrate. The reflectance model was implemented as user-defined functions to calculate the spectral reflectance at different oxide thicknesses. It was also integrated with the SCL’s MCM program to evaluate the uncertainty of the spectral responsivity of trap detectors.

Purpose – This study aims to understand the effect of brand citizenship behaviors of hospitality employees on customers’ relation with the brand. A model, which links employee behaviors to customers’ evaluation of brand performance, brand trust and brand commitment, is proposed to provide further insight into how customers form their relation with a brand. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected from both customer-contact employees and passengers of a corporate airline company. Structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed model by using both employee and customer data in the same research model. Findings – The results showed that even brand citizenship behaviors of employees did not affect brand commitment of customers directly; these behaviors explain customers’ commitment to a brand through influencing perceived brand performance of customers and their trust toward a brand. Overall, this study provided support for the impact of employees’ brand-related behaviors on consumers’ relation with the brand. Research limitations/implications – The results suggest that hospitality employees contribute to the brand success through their behaviors. This helps organizations to enhance brand-related behaviors of their employees to ensure long-term relationships not only with customers but also with their employees in a labor-intensive and high customer contact industry. Originality/value – This research was one of the first to analyze the effects of employees’ brand supporting behaviors on consumers by using both employee and consumer data in the same research model within the hospitality context.

The paper reports the major results of a study of performance measurement of internal auditing in various organizations operating in Poland in 2013 and prospects for development. The research implies that many internal audit departments formally do not measure performance, while others do measure, but only informally. Many times satisfaction indicators of key internal audit stakeholders are not identified, the information on performance is not reported to anyone apart from the internal audit staff, and the information is not used for continues improvement. The most often used performance measures in practice are focused on measuring effectiveness of audit processes and impact of internal audit services on organizations' performance. In addition there are internal audit efficiency and output measured. Quality measures are less common. Stakeholders, scope and usage of performance measurement are related to various organizational characteristics. Many respondents have declared that in future will start and formalize performance measurement and based on it they will improve internal audit performance. In future performance measurement will be more focused on internal audit quality and value added.

ABSTRACT: Internal auditors perform work that is relevant to their host entities' financial reporting processes; yet, little research attention has focused on the effects of internal auditing on companies' external financial reporting. Using a unique and previously unavailable data set, we investigate the relation between internal audit function (IAF) quality and earnings management. We measure IAF quality using a composite measure comprising six individual components of IAF quality based on SAS No. 65, which guides external auditors in assessing the quality of an IAF with respect to its role in financial reporting. Earnings management is measured using two separate proxies: (1) abnormal accruals and (2) the propensity to meet or barely beat analysts' earnings forecasts. We find evidence that IAF quality is associated with a moderation in the level of earnings management as measured by both proxies.

Resumen

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released heat illness data which highlighted that ~29 heat stress hospitalizations and ~3 heat-related deaths occurred every day during the summer months within the US from years 2000 to 2014. Heatstroke- the most severe form of heat illness which oftentimes lead to death- has been cited to be entirely preventable if a timely intervention is introduced. This dissertation uses microwave radiometric thermometry to perform wireless non-invasive internal body temperature monitoring which can enable intervention methods that help to prevent deaths associated with heat-illness. Overall, this dissertation develops a comprehensive closed-form analytical radiometric model and validates the effectiveness of the comprehensive model through a controlled life-like human body temperature sensing experiment. Wireless sub-skin temperature data is predicted from a human tissue mimicking phantom testbed to within 1%. A generic isolated radiometer system equation is derived for all possible calibration source combinations. The generic isolated radiometer system equation predicts comparable results to that of an ideal simulation. While improved isolation decreases measurement uncertainty, it does not improve the accuracy of estimated noise temperatures using a perfectly-isolated radiometer system equation assumption. A highly reproducible tissue-mimicking biological phantom (bio-phantom) recipe (comprised of urethane, graphite powder, and a solvent) was developed to accurately emulate the electrical properties of actual dry human skin versus frequency up to 18 GHz. The developed solid state skin phantom begins in pourable liquid form and then cures at room temperature into a dry solid state mold. An in-plane electromagnetic bandgap structure was developed and integrated within an on-body inward facing spiral antenna design. The inclusion of the in-plane electromagnetic bandgap structure demonstrated a +2.64dB gain improvement in the antenna broadside and -8dB in the rear gain while in-contact with the body as compared to the conventional spiral antenna. Likewise, the measured main beam efficiency is improved from 54.43% for the conventional antenna to 86.36% for the EBG antenna. Two techniques based on signal-flow graph theory were derived to explain both the non-coherent steady-state radiative transfer and the coherent radiative transfer within multi-layered dielectric media with non-uniform temperatures and any number of stratified layers. Both models allow for the accurate characterization and sensing of the thermal emissions originating from subsurface tissue layers.

Recent statistics have suggested that a proportion of drivers are killed or seriously injured on UK roads due to feeling nervous, uncertain or panicked whilst driving. The literature into negative emotions has primarily focused on the relationship between anger and driving. Not including the literature on driving phobias and fears after a motor vehicle accident, the literature on the relationship between anxiety and driving is limited and inconclusive. The aim of the thesis was to investigate the effects of both state and trait anxiety on driving behaviours and autonomic reactions using studies with varying methodologies. Chapter 2 describes a questionnaire study, which found that whilst driving anxiety can have a substantial impact on anxiety related thoughts, behaviours and active avoidance, trait anxiety had slightly differential effects regarding social concerns, aggressive reactions and anxiety and avoidance of specific driving situations. Chapter 3 established, in a laboratory study, that whilst trait anxiety predicted various self-reported driving reactions, it did not affect levels of behavioural or autonomic reactions to driving video stimuli. Chapter 4 expands on these findings with a study that demonstrated reductions in high frequency heart rate variability, indicating a potential lack of emotional regulation within this context. The research was then taken into a simulated environment, where state and trait anxiety were investigated. The studies reported in Chapters 6 and 7 found limited impacts of threatening instructional sets on levels of state anxiety, but demonstrated that increases in state anxiety could lead to changes in behaviour and skin conductance levels. Finally, a simulator study reported in Chapter 8 demonstrated that whilst trait anxiety did not affect driving behaviours, it did affect levels of attentional control and processing efficiency. This leads into a discussion of the theoretical and practical implications of these findings. Particular focus is given to the benefits of interventions and exposure therapies, and it is argued that different types of intervention would be more beneficial depending on levels of state or trait anxiety.

Resumen

The desire for smaller, faster, and more efficient products places a strain on thermal management in components ranging from gas turbine blades to computers. Heat exchangers that utilize internal cooling flows have shown promise in both of these industries. Although pin fins are often placed in the cooling channels to augment heat transfer, their addition comes at the expense of increased pressure drop. Consequently, the pin fin geometry must be judiciously chosen to achieve the desired heat transfer rate while minimizing the pressure drop and accompanying pumping requirements. This project culminates in the construction of a new test facility and the development of a unique force measurement methodology. Direct force measurement is achieved with a cantilever beam force sensor that uses sensitive piezoresistive strain gauges to simultaneously measure aerodynamic lift and drag forces on a pin fin. After eliminating the detrimental environmental influences, forces as small as one-tenth the weight of a paper clip are successfully measured. Although the drag of an infinitely long cylinder in uniform cross flow is well documented, the literature does not discuss the aerodynamic forces on a cylinder with an aspect ratio of unity in channel flow. Measured results indicate that the drag coefficient of a cylindrical pin in a single row array is greater than the drag coefficient of an infinite cylinder in cross flow. This phenomenon is believed to be caused by an augmentation of viscous drag on the pin fin induced by the increased viscous effects inherent in channel flow.

This research explores the role, which the construct, service quality plays in an internal marketing setting. This is achieved by evaluating the perceptions and expectations of the production department with regards to the service quality provided by the maintenance department of a South African motor vehicle manufacturer. This was done using the INTSERVQUAL instrument, which was found to be a reliable instrument for measuring internal service quality within this context. A positivist approach has been adopted in conducting this research. There are two main hypotheses for this study: the first hypothesis is concerned with the relationship between the overall internal service quality and the five dimensions of service quality namely: tangibles, empathy, reliability, responsiveness and reliability. The second hypothesis focuses on the relationship between the front line staff segments of the production department and the five dimensions of internal service quality. The results of this research suggest that the perceptions and expectations of internal service customer segments plays a major role in achieving internal service quality. In addition, the importance of the INTSERVQUAL instrument in measuring internal service quality within the motor vehicle manufacturing environment is confirmed.

Resumen

The effective management of organisational climate has become an increasingly important ingredient for business success. This has resulted in a need for up-to-date research and information on the subject, leading to the development of various measurement instruments. The main purpose of this study was to validate the Organisational Climate Measure (OCM) for the South African context. The OCM is designed to serve as a global multi-dimensional measure of organisational climate and is based on the competing values model developed by Quinn and Rohrbaugh. In this study a comprehensive literature review was conducted prior to the OCM’s administration to a sample of 200 individuals currently employed in a South African organisation. The reliability and validity of the OCM was evaluated by means of Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and confirmatory factor analysis. The results indicated strong correlations between factors and a good model fit. It was concluded that the OCM is a valid and reliable instrument for measuring organisational climate within the South African context. Copyright

Resumen

This thesis examines the utility of the Rényi entropy (RE), a measure of the complexity of probability density functions, as a tool for finding physically meaningful patterns in geophysical data. Initially, the RE is applied to observational data of long-lived atmospheric tracers in order to analyse the dynamics of stratospheric transitions regions associated with barriers to horizontal mixing. Its wider applicability is investigated by testing the RE as a method for highlighting internal boundaries in snow and ice from ground penetrating radar (GPR) recordings. High-resolution 500 MHz GPR soundings of dry snow were acquired at several sites near Scott Base, Antarctica, in 2008 and 2009, with the aim of using the RE to facilitate the identification and tracking of subsurface layers to extrapolate point measurements of accumulation from snow pits and firn cores to larger areas. The atmospheric analysis focuses on applying the RE to observational tracer data from the EOS-MLS satellite instrument. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is shown to exhibit subtropical RE maxima in both hemispheres. These peaks are a measure of the tracer gradients that mark the transition between the tropics and the mid-latitudes in the stratosphere, also referred to as the edges of the tropical pipe. The RE maxima are shown to be located closer to the equator in winter than in summer. This agrees well with the expected behaviour of the tropical pipe edges and is similar to results reported by other studies. Compared to other stratospheric mixing metrics, the RE has the advantage that it is easy to calculate as it does not, for example, require conversion to equivalent latitude and does not rely on dynamical information such as wind fields. The RE analysis also reveals occasional sudden poleward shifts of the southern hemisphere tropical pipe edge during austral winter which are accompanied by increased mid-latitude N2O levels. These events are investigated in more detail by creating daily high-resolution N2O maps using a two-dimensional trajectory model and MERRA reanalysis winds to advect N2O observations forwards and backwards in time on isentropic surfaces. With the aid of this ‘domain filling’ technique it is illustrated that the increase in southern hemisphere mid-latitude N2O during austral winter is probably the result of the cumulative effect of several large-scale, episodic leaks of N2O-rich air from the tropical pipe. A comparison with the global distribution of potential vorticity strongly suggests that irreversible mixing related to planetary wave breaking is the cause of the leak events. Between 2004 and 2011 the large-scale leaks are shown to occur approximately every second year and a connection to the equatorial quasi-biennial oscillation is found to be likely, though this cannot be established conclusively due to the relatively short data set. Identification and tracking of subsurface boundaries, such as ice layers in snow or the bedrock of a glacier, is the focus of the cryospheric part of this project. The utility of the RE for detecting amplitude gradients associated with reflections in GPR recordings is initially tested on a 25 MHz sounding of an Antarctic glacier. The results show distinct regions of increased RE values that allow identification of the glacial bedrock along large parts of the profile. Due to the low computational requirements, the RE is found to be an effective pseudo gain function for initial analysis of GPR data in the field. While other gain functions often have to be tuned to give a good contrast between reflections and background noise over the whole vertical range of a profile, the RE tends to assign all detectable amplitude gradients a similar (high) value, resulting in a clear contrast between reflections and background scattering. Additionally, theoretical considerations allow the definition of a ‘standard’ data window size with which the RE can be applied to recordings made by most pulsed GPR systems and centre frequencies. This is confirmed by tests with higher frequency recordings (50 and 500 MHz) acquired on the McMurdo Ice Shelf. However, these also reveal that the RE processing is less reliable for identifying more closely spaced reflections from internal layers in dry snow. In order to complete the intended high-resolution analysis of accumulation patterns by tracking internal snow layers in the 500 MHz data from two test sites, a different processing approach is developed. Using an estimate of the emitted waveform from direct measurement, deterministic deconvolution via the Fourier domain is applied to the high-resolution GPR data. This reveals unambiguous reflection horizons which can be observed in repeat measurements made one year apart. Point measurements of average accumulation from snow pits and firn cores are extrapolated to larger areas by identifying and tracking a dateable dust layer horizon in the radargrams. Furthermore, it is shown that annual compaction rates of snow can be estimated by tracking several internal reflection horizons along the deconvolved radar profiles and calculating the average change in separation of horizon pairs from one year to the next. The technique is complementary to point measurements from other studies and the derived compaction rates agree well with published values and theoretical estimates.

AbstractValid and reliable measurement instruments are crucial for human factors in privacy research. We expect them to measure what they purport to measure, yielding validity, and to measure this consistently, offering us reliability. While there is a range of privacy concern instruments available in the field and their investigation continues unabated, we shall focus on a brief form of the scale Internet users? Information privacy concerns (IUIPC-8) as an example. We not only present IUIPC-8 itself, but also consider methods for the evaluation of valid and reliable measurement instruments. In this, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) serves us as a valuable tool. Our inquiry takes into account the ordinal and non-normal data yielded by the IUIPC questionnaire, compares multiple models to confirm the three-dimensionality is a fixed term, typically written with hyphen of the scale, examines global and local fit, and, finally, estimates construct validity and internal consistency reliability metrics. We offer a comparison between IUIPC-10 and IUIPC-8 drawing on two independent samples. In conclusion, we highlight properties of the scale and considerations for its use in practice.

AbstractEEG and fMRI are thought to measure partly distinct, partly overlapping, and certainly incomplete aspects of neuronal activity. Brain network models (BNMs) are used to simulate neuronal activity, like the dynamics of postsynaptic potentials, or spike-firing activity, and may conjointly predict both, EEG and fMRI, and therefore allow for the integration and the analysis of the two signals. The usual motivation for EEG–fMRI integration is to use both techniques in a complementary fashion by combining their strengths, while ameliorating their weaknesses. For instance, EEG measures electric activity on the scalp with a high temporal sampling rate, but a low spatial resolution (e.g., due to volume conduction effects). On the other hand, fMRI BOLD contrast is an indirect (proxy) measure of neural activity that is sensitive for the fluctuation of blood oxygenation at a relatively low temporal resolution. Some of the appeal of brain simulation-based integration of EEG–fMRI data is related to the idea that after fitting a neural model to reproduce observed activity, the internal activity of the model can tell us something about unobservable activity, like neural firing, which can only be measured invasively and in a spatially restricted manner. Brain simulation-based approaches have the potential to not only integrate EEG and fMRI, but basically data from every modality that can either directly (like multi-electrode recordings) or indirectly (like fMRI) be linked with the neural model.

On the way to a reliable and large-scale application of internal insulation, clear and simple guidelines for building practitioners are needed, across all phases of refurbishment planning. Closing this gap was one objective of the “IN2EuroBuild”-project, completed in 2022. As a support in the planning process and for decision-making within the framework of the project, two comprehensive guides for the planning of internal insulation measures were developed. They guide users from the as-is analysis of the building (part one) to the renovation planning of the façade, the selection of suitable insulation systems and the verification and consideration of constructional details (part two). It describes the aspects to be considered during the entire process of planning and implementing an interior insulation measure. Both parts of the guide are aimed at people who have little or no experience in the field of energy efficient refurbishment and interior insulation, but who want to be informed and at least have a say. This group of people can include, for example, building owners, investors or public authority employees, but also architects or engineers who have rarely dealt with interior insulation and therefore do not know the various planning bases and dependencies in detail. The reader should be enabled to assess an issue and select a suitable interior insulation system in the numerous, unproblematic cases in which experts do not need to be consulted.

Research excellence is a goal that universities and researchers alike strive for, but how do we identify and measure research excellence? Do quantitative metrics demonstrate the impact that researchers are aiming for? This report details the results of an exploratory case study investigating how researchers responded to a range of quantitative metrics. As a part of their approach, the project team interviewed thirteen academic staff at the University of Waikato across a range of disciplines. A thematic analysis of the interviews was carried out, bringing to light eight dominant themes from the participants’ discussions: • No one-size fits all - impact and excellence varies greatly across disciplines and matter more to some disciplines than others • Lack of understanding of metrics and reliance on h-index • Metrics are subjective and can be gamed • A general nervousness around metrics or disdain, especially for Altmetrics • Cultural considerations and the importance of the collective • Disconnect between what they value and what they think their peers value • Publishing decisions are driven by a diverse range of factors • Varying levels of importance in getting research out into the public including OA This paper argues that metrics can be used as a tool for researchers, but should be understood in the context of non-quantitative measures. Metrics alone cannot determine how impactful a researcher’s contribution may be. It is important for researchers to be recognised as individuals in order for them to tell the story of their work. This will require upskilling both for researchers and those who evalu-ate research.

The industry need was to investigate current and potential technologies for the measurement of seal gaps in internal floating roof storage tanks, including methods of remote monitoring including a) identify existing seal gap measurement technologies and methodologies as well as individuals and/or companies who own the technologies, and b) identify other technologies that may prove useful to effectively measure seal gaps on tanks in service. Four technologies were identified as possible remote-inspection alternatives to the current general practice of inspecting and measuring internal floating roof seal gaps by placing personnel inside in-service tanks. At least two of these technologies, remote camera and x-ray imaging, are worthy of additional evaluation to assess the relative costs and reliability as alternatives to manual inspection and measurement. Remote camera technology has been applied specifically to seal gap measurement and shown to be a viable alternative to manual inspection. X-ray imaging technology appears to be viable as an alternative but has not been applied specifically to seal gap measurement and would require further development to affirm its suitability for this purpose..

This paper analyzes the effects of the Realignment process of the Inter-AmericanDevelopment Bank (IDB) on internal collaboration outcomes. Network analysis methods are used to depict social networks and to measure the degree of collaboration between IDB employees at different points in time. Drawing on a before-and-after comparison, we conclude that the Realignment successfully dismantled the institution¿s regional segmentation and location silos. However, collaboration within and between sectors does not appear to have increased.

Coverage intervals for a parameter estimate computed using complex survey data are often constructed by assuming the parameter estimate has an asymptotically normal distribution and the measure of the estimator’s variance is roughly chi-squared. The size of the sample and the nature of the parameter being estimated render this conventional “Wald” methodology dubious in many applications. I developed a revised method of coverage-interval construction that “speeds up the asymptotics” by incorporating an estimated measure of skewness. I discuss how skewness-adjusted intervals can be computed for ratios, differences between domain means, and regression coefficients.

High Flow samplers remain the most useful and accurate tool for the direct measurement of fugitive and vented emission sources in the field. Operators may be obligated to measure certain emissions with the high-flow sampler for regulatory, reporting, or internal environmental and/or maintenance programs. The most commonly used commercial unit of the last 20+ years has been the Bacharach Hi-Flow� Sampler, though it was recently discontinued by the manufacturer. The supply of new units and spare parts is exhausted, leaving an unmet need for direct emission measurement capabilities. Though several research groups have constructed their own high-flow samplers as prototypes or in low volumes, the need for a commercial replacement of the Bacharach unit was recognized by several manufacturers who are bringing new and updated high-flow units to the market. This report will outline the capabilities and qualities of these currently available commercial units to provide interested users with the background needed to inform their purchasing decision.
