Resumen
During the first decades of the twentieth century, Americans grappled with the idea of what it meant to be a modern society. As in other periods and places, arts, architecture and design played a significant role in expressing and exploring the issues and concerns of the day. In the period 1930 to 1965, and emerging practice called "interior design," in particular, became a potent medium for this purpose.Like modern art and modern architecture, the key to the practice of interior design was its basis in ideas. As curator Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., pointed out in his 1950 explanatory booklet "What is Modern Interior Design?" published by the Museum of Modern Art, interior design's foundation, in contrast to interior decorating, was in "principles rather than effects." To use the word "design" instead of "decoration," in relation to the creation of interiors implied the use of systematic and rational approach based in ideas not personal preferences. By the late 1930s both the discourse and practice of interior design as an alternative to interior decoration had begun to emerge in the United States. This study will explore how the emerging practice of interior design between 1930 and 1965, developed through the efforts of designers from various fields who all embraced this systematic and rational approach to creating interiors based in "principles and not effects." It will discuss how designers such as Ray and Charles Eames, George Nelson, Richard Neutra, Florence Knoll, and Russel and Mary Wright, whose work is highlighted in this study, used interior design as a way to explore and express theoretical considerations that could be learned, understood and disseminated by the designed interior. By doing so it exposes the ideas at work behind the interior designs of this period, which for the most part have not been fully considered by current histories, and presents a richer, more complete and more accurate account of this moment in design history and interior design's contribution to it.

Resumen
This research focuses on four main topics: Children’s’ Cognitive Development as it relates to age-appropriate interior design; Children’s Hospital Design and healing environments; Public Spaces in Hospitals – interior architecture and interior design; Contextual Issues – specifically, the religious, ethnic and national context of Palestine. Literature indicates that research is needed in the design of healing environments for children in order to create spaces that are child-friendly and meet their cognitive development needs. There is little research available about the design of the public areas of children’s hospital including the main entrance, atrium and thoroughfares. Also, most empirical research uses traditional social science methods to understand the requirements for healing environments for children (e.g. interviews, observations). Few studies use design- or arts-based approaches. Furthermore, most research has been conducted in the West, with little research from other countries, like Palestine, where few hospitals are devoted only to children. This research aimed to determine: (1) key design factors, functions, constraints and programme requirements for designing the public spaces of children’s hospitals in an age-appropriate way to promote healing; (2) how context-specific issues relating to Palestine play a role in determining the key design factors. From a critical analysis of the literature, specific research questions and the development of a primary research plan were developed. The main research question is: For a new children’s hospital in Palestine, how should the public areas (i.e., main entrance, atrium, and throughfares) be designed so that they are suitable for all age ranges and promote healing? In Palestine, qualitative data were collected during nine co-design and cocreation workshops that included arts-based activities and semi-structured interviews. Participants included children from 3-18 years, parents, doctors, nurses, reception and admissions staff, and four groups of designers. All participants, excluding the designers, participated in drawing and modeling activities. The use of drawings with children is an indispensable tool because their verbal expression is often not highly developed, and because preferences and ideas can be expressed more intuitively. Similarly, models can be effective tools because children can express ideas and preferences about form, materials and size through them in a way that words alone cannot describe. This study uses a thematic analysis approach to analysing the qualitative data. The results of data analysis were sorted into main themes and sub-themes. The key findings of this study are: context-specific issues (i.e. culture, gender, separation and religion issues); physical environments: interior architecture and interior design – medical spaces (e.g. emergency, outpatients, triage room and others); non-medical spaces (e.g. play areas, indoor and outdoor green areas, entertainment activities, spaces for eating, reception, waiting areas and admissions); interior design elements (e.g. image design, art, form and shape, wayfinding signage, and colours); and environmental considerations (e.g. noise, hygiene, smell, and light). These findings will inform guidelines and recommendations and will be supported by visual models for the design of children’s hospitals, particularly public spaces in the particular context of Palestine. The guidelines will contribute to the creation of supportive healing environments for all stakeholders, but particularly for children. This study demonstrates that practical design methods in the research process can be very effective in fostering creativity and in drawing out ideas and preferences from young children and other stakeholders. Such methods provide a novel approach to the design of healing environments for children.

The purpose of this research was to understand the ways that interior designers experience practice through thinking, acting, and being, and as a consequence develop their interior design identities. The findings have supported the development of a new model on interior design identity development through practice. This model will contribute to the discipline by strengthening aspects of interior design identity and practice and will in turn inform education and further research within the discipline.

Perolini, Petra S. "Futuring Design: Transforming Interior Design using Design Futures Theory". Thesis, Griffith University, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/393969.

Resumen
Design studies traditionally examine the process of design in the context of how that process contributes to the creation of the designed object, system or structure. That is, a successful design process is measured by the capacity and efficiency with which it results in an object, space or system. In many cases, there is no measure of how well-designed these outputs are, at most; such measures will generally be limited to cost, efficacy and user satisfaction. Further, the notion of what constitutes well-designed is arbitrary and inconsistent across disciplines. The theory of Design Futures highlights the crucial implications of design on society and the environment in which the designed object operates over its lifetime. This thesis deals with the challenge of finding ways to incorporate the principles of Design Futures to improve design practice so that it incorporates both the lessons learned from historical enquiry and the experience of design practitioners who have attempted to incorporate these historical lessons. Inevitably, any attempt to improve design practice must engage with education practice to ensure that designers acquire the principles and methods of design which they apply in their professional practice. Human-centred design focuses on the impact of the design on the user as they make use of the space, dwelling or object that has been designed and Design Thinking facilitates this by framing the problem as broadly and contextually as possible and iteratively reviewing the design approach with the user. Design Futures is one of a number of theories, or movements, that extends the context to the long term social, environmental and cultural implications of the design. This research builds on that work to discover a framework that connects theory to practice and how that framework might be used in educating designers to embed that theory into their practice thereby assisting them to take responsibility for the long term cultural, social and environmental implications of their design. This research sets out to link the theory and the practice by creating a Design Futures framework and integrating it into the curriculum of an Interior Design course. This challenges the superficial view of Interior Design with a view to teaching a socially responsible design practice that takes a long-term view. Such a curriculum is built on the theoretical underpinnings of Design Futures and is informed by the key principle that a designer is responsible for the social, cultural and environmental impact of their design. The term sustainability is used in this research to include these impacts over the long-term. This review unfolds in a narrative that moves from the literature review of Interior Design theory and practice in chapter one to an analysis of Urban Planning and its social impacts in chapter two. This second phase combines the literature review with interviews to explore the mechanics of change through an examination of the theory and practice of Urban Planning. The chapter on Authenticity extracts and examines a framework based on the variables of success developed by Price Waterhouse Coopers and summarised by the Greater Namoi Chamber of Commerce, to determine criteria for urban planners to measure the “Success of the City.” Interviews were carried out with the founder and residents of Common Ground and with the urban planners commenting on authenticity. The practitioners actively engaged in the research as they commented on the value of authenticity as a framework for measuring the impact of gentrification as well as on the authenticity of their practice. Given the apparent power of a framework to record and collate quantitative action research, these frameworks are then examined and compared with the Authenticity framework, to create the proposed Design Futures framework. This framework is then tested against Action Research previously undertaken by the author to explore its aptness for measuring Design Thinking and ways in which it might be employed pedagogically. There are two separate sets of Action Research used to retrospectively review the Design Futures framework. Firstly, the author and colleagues undertook major external projects applying Design Futures theory to refine, develop and promote it. In addition, the students engaged in delivering design projects to real-world clients by applying Design Futures methodology and so were actively engaged in developing and testing the concepts that were later incorporated as the components of the Design Futures framework developed in this thesis. By working with the students to refine and test the application of Design Futures theory, the research actively engages the students as participants in the research that they are applying. By developing the framework and the Action Research independently but from the same underpinning theory, it is possible that built in assumptions have been reinforced rather than exposed. Methods for overcoming this weakness are addressed in the conclusion.

Resumen
The Beat's Interior seeks to answer the simple question: What does the inside of a beat look like? This thesis provides a solution as an audiovisual projection-mapping project inspired by the song, "Pyramids" by Frank Ocean. It explores the relationship between music and architecture. Influenced by scientific theories of cosmic space and the philosophical ideas of space and rhythm, this installation becomes an immersive experience within a constructed form. Original video is mapped onto the skin of the dome using four projectors that are orchestrated through Madmapper. Eight individual parts of a single track are played separately on designated stereos located on the periphery of the room. Changes in the video and music are triggered by GyrOSC data filtered into Max/MSP/Jitter.

Resumen
This thesis argues that women were seminal to the development of interior design as a discipline and profession in Sydney, Australia. Covering the period from the 1920s to the 1960s, this study identifies Thea Proctor, Nora McDougall, Margaret Lord, Phyllis Shillito and Mary White as foundational leaders who progressively advanced interior design in Sydney through individual and collective understandings of design. Focussing on their contributions to this development, this study explains complex interrelationships between women and modernity in interior design. This emergence of the discipline and profession in Sydney situates the initiatives of these five women at a transitional phase of the field???s global development when ???interior decoration??? is challenged by modern attitudes and artistic theories of ???design???. Working as individuals, Proctor and her successors advance the profession???previously characterised as a ???natural??? pursuit for women of ???taste??? and ???style??????by their artistic, rational and practical approaches to interior design. At a time when no distinct discipline exists in Sydney, the women offer instruction and forge new directions by reformulating previous overseas traditions: incorporating a wide-range of aesthetic and theoretical conceptions of design, demonstrating common and different approaches to practice, and integrating changes in requisite knowledge and skills in response to their times. The women???s programs are conventional and progressive, common and diverse, universal and particular in content and meaning. Working within a variety of settings, the women importantly establish professional jurisdiction situating interior design in a modernist context. Significantly, their contributions challenge past readings that have diminished the early women of interior design, and at the same time, embody all the conflicts, ruptures, paradoxes and contradictions that are cental to modernity. This research redresses the lack of institutional history of interior design in Sydney and links theories of modernism and modernity to issues of gender and profession to explain the women???s significant contributions to interior design at a critical juncture of the field???s development. As such, their stories and legacy of design in Sydney contribute to a wider picture of women and modernity in interior design.

The main goal of this thesis is to explore how interior spaces in hotel designs can provide a less stressful environment and promote health and harmony by using Feng Shui Principles. It will first discuss the principles of Feng Shui and general hotel design, and then move on to demonstrate how the application of Feng Shui principles can be used to create a hotel environment that encourages health and harmony in its occupants. This project will demonstrate principles that not only can be applied to hotel space, but also can be practiced in any other interior space. This thesis, therefore, demonstrates new possibilities for how "care of the self" is delivered and received through design.

Resumen
The community of Old Town Manchester lies across from downtown Richmond on the south side of the James River. Annexed in 1910, Manchester was the industrial hub of the city and home to the Chesterfield Railroad, the first railway in Virginia and used to transport coal. These industrial roots are still evident today in the warehouses and manufacturing facilities that continue to operate or have been repurposed. The building of focus is located on the corner of bustling Hull Street and quiet 7th Avenue. Distinctive in its stone masonry exterior, 616 Hull was constructed in the 1920s as a Chevrolet showroom and manufacturing facility. Both the proximity to downtown and the historic character of Manchester made it seem an ideal location for a hotel and restaurant. Considering the hotel as a source of stability for the community because it provides jobs, and the restaurant as an entity within the hotel that simultaneously serves the guests as well as the local residents, the concept of discovery and experience of place emerged. With the belief that locals share a sense of pride in the city in which they live, thus making Richmonders the city’s best advocates, this thesis was an exploration of how design can encourage interaction between two groups of people- visitors and locals.

This dissertation examines the relevance of patterns as a compositional element in contemporary interior design. The field of observation consists on the inter-relationship between interior and surface design, present in the coatings and finishing of objects. The development of this research has as starting point the acknowledgement from the author, based on her experience, of the importance of the participation of patterning in defining the identity of the environment in contrast to the intuitive way of choosing this compositional element made by the professional of the area. The discussion of the topic is based on theoretical research of authors such as Ching and Binggeli, Gibbs, Gurgel, Rüthschilling, Lupton and Phillips, Savoir and Vilaseca, among others. The study is structured on a qualitative exploratory and descriptive approach in order to find indicators, taking advantage of the techniques of the bibliographical research, as well as a field and a case study. In order to verify the importance of patterns in Interior Design, the search is based on known activity of Interior Design, design development, field observation and case study of a specific project. Displays the state of the art design area under the aspect of conceptual and compositional patterns in the development of applied indoors, through the study of "contemporary visuality". In discussing the results of the study identifies the presence of patterns in research - Interior Design and Surface Design and observes the aspects considered in the use of pattern as a compositional element in the environment. It comes to the conclusion that the pattern is a relevant compositional element in constructing the identity of the environment. The work highlights the surface design in the development of patterns when it observes the technical and conceptual aspects applied to the identified coatings in contemporary environments. The use of patterns is significant and growing in the field, being almost impossible to see a surface without it.

Resumen

This report is a documentation of a Master’s thesis of 20 credits performed at the educational program of Technical Product- and Production Development with Design at Halmstad University. The project is carried out in cooperation with Hafa AB in Halmstad.

The purpose of this project was to bring forth a concept of a bathroom cabinet for Hafa’s new selection Young through creative design methods. The selection is supposed to attract the younger purchaser but also a target group that dare to experiment with home furnishing and appreciates new design. This group is referred to as Young at Heart.

To satisfy the needs identified in the initial development phase a specific design process model was developed that originates from Ullman´s “The Mechanical Design Process” and Landqvist’s “Vilda idéer och djuplodande analys”. The realization of the project was performed in four parts; problem analysis phase, idea generation phase, realization phase and resulting phase.

In the design process it was included to carry out a thorough analysis of functionality, characteristics and design the bathroom cabinet should represent. Moreover, choice of material, construction details and lighting were other aspects of great importance for the mirror cabinet’s performance.

A great range of tools were used with the purpose of reaching understanding of the product, the industry and the design process. Through quantitative interviews with the target group and the staff at Hafa, benchmarking and trend analysis, valuable information was gathered considering the preferred characteristics and design of a bathroom cabinet.

The project resulted in a mirror cabinet representing innovative design, offering both open and concealed storage. The design differs from the competition, however represents the core values of Hafa, quality and elegance to reasonable price.

How might interior environments play a role in promoting life long well being? According to Passarino, et al., genetic variety only accounts for about 25% of the variation of human longevity. A combination of diet, environment and exercise comprise the greatest factors. The amount of time Americans spend indoors presents a challenge to increasing physical activity: the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that Americans spend 93% of their lives indoors (Roberts, 2016). Therefore, if physical activity is crucial to living longer, the design of interior environments could logically be a critical factor in promoting natural movement and sustaining lifelong well-being. National Geographic fellow Dan Buettner identified five “Blue Zones” throughout the world where people naturally live longer: Ikaria, Greece; Okinawa, Japan; Oligastra Region, Sardinia; Loma Linda, California; and Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica. These regions have unusually high concentrations of centenarians who had grown old without noticeable signs of heart disease, obesity, cancer or diabetes (Buettner, 2015). Buettner identified nine common principles that universally characterize well-being in the Blue Zones. The first, and most crucial to design in the built environment, is to “move naturally.” Healthy centenarians, Buettner says, “live in environments that constantly nudge them into moving” (Buettner, 2015). This research will seek to translate Blue Zone principles aimed at promoting continued well-being through natural movement that can inform principles for the creation of interior environments. RESEARCH METHODOLOGIES Further analysis of Blue Zones principles will address specific conditions and behaviors that encourage natural movement. A literature review and case studies will be presented that show a correlation between natural movement within the built environment and measurable increases in healthy outcomes. The example projects include La Maison de Verre, Paris, France; L’Unité d’Habitation à Marseille, France; and Tea House, Bethesda, Maryland. Interior design that encourages regular natural movement occurs primarily in the design of a building’s major circulation systems and its program (Center for Active Design, 2010). Corridors, elevators and lobbies that connect other spaces in the program encourage walking. Elements like stairs, bicycle storage and furniture that produces micro-movement promote activity when they are visible, safe and attractive. Programmed spaces that encourage physical activity like dance/movement studios and those that promote healthy diets also lead to increases in healthy behaviors, which ultimately lead to increased longevity. Using these guides, a building in Richmond, Virginia will be redesigned as a micro-Blue Zone that could be used as a model for promoting increased life long well being. This two-level adaptive reuse, mixed use commercial project will address vertical transitions, social spaces and outdoor relationships that encourage residents and visitors to move throughout the day.

Resumen
This thesis investigates drinking water quality and the ways in which our built environment can be used to as a tool to alter or confront perception through the violation of expectations. Research indicates that the design of public interiors could be a key component in regulating healthy urban ecologies. Desire to understand the opposing needs of two user groups – the skeptic and the advocate – led me to research design prototypes that prioritize the unexpected as it is manifested in spectacle as underscored through proximity. By abstracting this research, a new hypothetical design is formed in the form of a comedy lounge, water museum, and research laboratory that will evoke inclusivity, collaboration, and surprise. This reimagining of public programs will serve to invite users to be “in on the joke,” as well as, become participants in acts of reckoning, accountability, and conservation for the future of common goods like drinking water.

Resumen
This thesis examined how virtual reality could be used in interior design. The thesis was limited to virtual reality experienced using a head mounted display. The Method was to integrate virtual reality into an existing interior design software called CET Designer. After investigating the available commercial virtual reality hardware and software Oculus SDK and OpenVR was chosen. Unity 3D was used as a prototyping tool for experimenting with different interaction and navigation methods. An user study with 14 participants was performed. It compared four different navigation methods. First person shooter style controls using a gamepad was proven to be the best one. It can also be concluded that having a bad navigation style could decreased the user experience in virtual reality and cause motion sickness.

Resumen
In the United State today, many people do not have access to adequate dental treatment, while tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease-five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever. At the same time, studies show that 80% of dental illness takes place in 25% of the population, which is comprised mostly of lower socioeconomic groups. A study undertaken by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2000, concludes that poor children suffer five times as much tooth decay as their more affluent peers. Furthermore, in poor children with tooth decay, almost 80% remain untreated. Poor dental health there-fore is a major health concern for under privileged families. The goal of this project is to enhance and facilitate the delivery of better dental treatment by designing a new prototype for a portable dental office that will be more flexible and more usable in a variety of situations and locations. For the purpose of this study, this prototype will be considered or tested within the context of three different types of spaces: the single closed room; a large open public space; and within mobile and nonpermanent structures such as tents. Several aspects of working conditions specific to the dental office will be taken into account when developing this design including transportability, degree of flexibility, storability, hygiene, and the creation of a relaxing atmosphere all of which greatly impact both the dentists and patients experience and are essential to the creation of a successful portable dental office.

Resumen
The relationship people have to electronic devices relys on their passive acceptance rather than an understanding of their functioning – often leaving the users alientated and helpless as their products break. Which qualities do electronic artifacts need to embody in order to be repairable? As opposed to a black-box, the metaphor of a white-box can describe this repairable ideal: A white-box is meant to be opened and allows easy access to all inner parts. It is designed to communicate functions and connections and aids the user in understanding. Therefore, a white-box is designed to allow the consumer to act. How «open» can household electronics be?
