The finished goods inventory management in the accessories area of a material testing company is complex. There is interdependence between the demands of products and they can be sold both as part of systems and as individual after sales items. Besides, there is uncertainty in determining replenishment lead times. An optimization problem is formulated considering customer satisfaction, inventory holding costs and correlation between demands. To ascertain its validity, a discrete event simulation is executed over historical demand. Simulation also helps to check the solution robustness by executing the proposed inventory levels over statistically generated demands. The result provides the right mix of finished products which should be stored on the shelves. 90% reduction in lost sales and 35% in inventory value on hand have been projected. The results have been further implemented at the part level inventory.

A product line, characterized by high level of customization, diversification and demand correlation between different finished goods products, requires increased efficiency and effectiveness. The product line, along with the intrinsic correlation, is modeled; the customer expectation is also analyzed. Based on these analyses, two inventory control frameworks are proposed: a fixed service level policy for the raw materials and an optimized policy for the finished goods. The optimal policy is validated using simulation. The proposed policies reduce the inventory value on hand for finished goods and raw materials by 35% and 30%, respectively, while at the same time optimizing the service levels.

In this work the management of a production system with a high mixture of products, interdependent demands and optional components is analyzed. An approach based on reorder point policy is proposed for both raw parts and finished goods inventory control. In the latter case, the solution of an optimization problem determines whether each product should be held in inventory and if so which safety factor z should be used. The choice of z, and as a consequence of the reorder level R, takes into consideration the demands interdependence, the customer's availability to buy if a certain waiting time is quoted to them and the fact that in a certain type of orders the optional components are required to ship. Global and decomposed optimization approaches are presented and compared. The decomposed approach is shown to achieve performances very close to the ones of the global optimization with much easier computations. By using the policy based on the decomposed optimization, it is possible to reduce simultaneously the value of the inventory and the expected number of lost sales as compared to a simple reorder point policy or to the policy currently in use at the company. A reduction of 35% of inventory and of almost 10 times of the average value of lost sales is expected if the company substitutes the current policy with the proposed one.

Orsoni, Alessandra. "Dynamic process simulation for the design of complex large-scale systems with respect to the performance of multiple interdependent production processes". Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/47907.

This research developed a methodology to assess the design of complex large-scale products with respect to the performance of their production processes. In complex large-scale projects, physical and functional relationships among the product systems and components, along with concurrency and co-location of their production processes, generate inter-system process dependencies that drive the relative production rates among the systems. The methodology links the complexity of the product to the complexity of the production process at the level of detail of the single component and task to model the impacts of inter-system process dependencies on production performance. This detailed focus makes the methodology highly responsive to changes in design and technology and able to capture primary, secondary and tertiary impacts of change on production performance. Based on the methodology, a dynamic process simulation model has been developed to systematically assess different combinations of design and technology alternatives across multiple dimensions of production performance. Performance measures include project duration, costs, resource utilization and index of workers' exposure to dangerous conditions. Simulated scenario testing based on actual data from a construction project, the renovation of Baker House (MIT building W7), demonstrates that 1) inter-system process dependencies strongly influence production performance, 2) these links build their dynamic effects on production performance at the detailed task and component level, and 3) the nature of the links and their spatial and temporal location vary as changes are introduced in the design and in the production specifications. One important consequence is that the specification and optimization of the production processes for product systems and components as separate from one another leads to solutions that may be sub-optimal for the performance of the whole project. In addition, the specification and the representation of complex production processes at the aggregate level fails to capture important impacts of design and technology changes and, thus, leads to inconsistent duration and cost estimates.

An optimized framework for the inventory control of a high mix production system has been designed in order to guarantee the optimal mix of items in stock in presence of correlated demands. The Virtual Profit concept was developed to measure the criticality of an item in presence of correlated demands. The introduction of the Virtual Profit in the optimization problem allowed the problem to be decomposed and the optimal control parameters to be computed separately. Demands were modeled based on the stochastic properties of the historical demand so that simulations could be performed using statistically generated orders. The simulations provided a validation of the proposed technique showing that, with the same size of inventory, considering the Virtual Profits instead of the real profits improves the quality of the solution, especially when low levels of inventory are kept.

Post international scenario Second World War, there were several efforts of regional cooperation and integration in the world. Some had major advance in integration, such as the European Union. But the point is that it advanced more efforts had a security agenda and cooperation in defense, and economic. This research aims to understand how cooperative arrangements in defense aircraft equipment can influence regional integration and draw inferences applicable to Unasur. So we start with the question of how different models of cooperation in the development of military aircraft impact on the regional integration process? We believe that cooperation in the development of military aircraft equipment, from the creation of a regionalized supply chain has the ability to contribute to a better relationship between the members of UNASUR, overcoming barriers and distorted views that hinder the process of regional integration. For this, the research will be structured around the Comparative Politics, supported by other current theories of International Relations. In this case, we will examine the lessons that can be learned from the development of European programs, with the F-104 and Panavia Tornado fighters. You thesis will be structured in four chapters: first on the issue of defense cooperation, both the conceptual and theoretical aspect, as the practical bias, with the debate on regionalism. Following, in part two, with an analysis of the aviation industry and its reflection as power in the international system. In part three, we analyze the F-104 programs and Tornado and contributed to the process of integration in Europe. Finally, in part four, I discuss how the lessons of the programs analyzed in Chapter 3, can be applied in the case of UNASUR, emphasizing the interference of external powers and views on cooperation between members of the bloc.
