Resumen
The gender† dimension of science and technology has become one of the most important and debated issues worldwide, impacting society at every level. A variety of international initiatives on the subject have been undertaken, including the continued monitoring of the status of women in science by Unesco Institute for Statistics (UIS) or the annual reports “Education at a Glance” by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) as well as field-related working groups and networking in order to collect data in a consistent manner. The majority of the international organizations have made clear statements about their discrimination policies (independently of their main field(s) of action), including the International Council for Science whose regulations are followed by the IAU. Gender equality at large is one of the eight United Nations Millennium Development Goals, which clearly calls for action related to science, technology and gender.

Resumen
Abstract The Afro-Asian People’s Solidarity Organization’s (AAPSO) Presidium Committee on Women met to prepare for the United Nations Conference on Women in Nairobi, Kenya. The committee aimed to tackle the impact of colonialism and imperialism and the ways they disproportionately impacted the lives of women. The AAPSO wanted to do this through a series of workshops focusing on the status of women in apartheid South Africa, the destabilization of women and children in Africa and Asia, the burden of debt in developing countries, and the subversive role of transnational corporations in mass media. The committee also recognized that women, particularly in Africa and Asia, formed the forefront of resistance movements, driving the struggle. This meeting shows that the Presidium Committee on Women optimistically saw women’s social justice as an integral component to the larger anticolonial and anti-imperial project.

Resumen
The study of the nutritional transition in Spain must combine sources concerning the health conditions and the nutritional profile of the population. Such an approximation to the issue is, as a rule, not possible until the two final decades of the 20th century. However, the report on the nutritional status of the Spanish army, undertaken by the American Interdepartmental Committee on Nutrition for National Defence (ICNND) in 1958, combines both approaches. The report is based on the medical examination of 10727 army drafts. First, the article contextualised the report’s sample geographically and demographically; second, it validated the variables used statistically; and third, it explored the relationship between the diseases diagnosed, the biomarkers yielded by blood and urine tests, and the diet. The main results were as follows: (a) the report confirmed that the military population under examination did not suffer from severe dietary shortcomings; (b) the sample presents a double bias, geographical (overrepresentation of southern provinces) and institutional (underrepresentation of the land forces).

Daley, Tanya Dawn. "The Politics of “Choice”: Canadian Feminism and the Royal Commission on New Reproductive Technologies". Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/20264.

Texto completo
Resumen
The Royal Commission on New Reproductive Technologies developed rapidly in Canada after the birth of world’s first “test tube baby,” Louise Brown, in 1978. Canadian feminists, propelled by the women’s health movement, perceived these technologies as a threat to women’s control over their bodies, the gains made to redefine the identity “woman” against the biological tradition of “mother,” and against the safety and freedom of women based on race, disability and class. In response to the lobby efforts of the women’s movement under the Canadian Coalition for a Royal Commission on New Reproductive Technologies, the Mulroney government established a commission in 1989 to study the medical, legal, and social implications these technologies would have on Canadian society. Through a qualitative analysis of manuscript and printed sources, this thesis explores the debate surrounding new reproductive technologies (NRTs) before and after the mandate of the Royal Commission (1989 to 1993). It discusses the views and positions of some of the key stakeholders such as the National Action Committee on the Status of Women, the Canadian Medical Association, the DisAbled Women’s Network, as well as adds the voice of infertile women through the Infertility Awareness Association of Canada. This thesis also examines the controversy and discontent created by the Commission’s dismissal of several members, by the management’s style of its Chair, and by the final report’s narrow scope. In the end, the reaction to the report was one of considerable disappointment amongst all major stakeholders, starting with NAC, which claimed that its voice had not been heard. At the same time, the debate over NRTs illustrates NAC’s ongoing internal problems as it faced the challenge of “identity politics.”

Resumen
The well-known outcome of the 1988 federal election – a Conservative Party majority in Parliament and an effective “yes” to the question of whether or not the Free Trade Agreement between Canada and the United States was desired – tends to obscure the importance of the process by which a large non-party based opposition movement sought to cultivate and organize the public’s understanding of the election’s central premise. While the opposition movement failed to have Prime Minister Brian Mulroney removed from power, the discursive process that the movement both created and was the driving force behind, is key to understanding the historical context of the debate over free trade itself. This thesis will illustrate that there existed a discursive process amongst the efforts of the anti-free trade movement from 1985-1988 to cultivate, organize, and mobilize public opposition to Mulroney’s neo-liberal economic policies, through re-framing those objections into a larger and more deeply-rooted Canadian historical narrative. A discourse analysis was conducted using the various public education materials produced by major anti-free trade civil society organizations in Canada. The examination of that discourse revealed three major stages in the overall process: First, organizations relied heavily on classic paradigms of an anti-continentalist narrative to reinforce what was different between the two countries creating an us and them paradigm and building a case for Canadian exceptionalism. Second, there was an intensification of the us and them language into a more defined us versus them, or them against us, dichotomy. Third, the anti-free trade movement sought to effectively translate the previously established civic opposition into pragmatic political action in preparation for a national election campaign. The results show that there was an evolution in the ways members of the civil society opposition framed and evolved their arguments in order to turn their “issues” into more of a “crisis.” By employing (and expanding on) discursive tools used within that public narrative to generate fear of the other to validate illusions of self, and to construct believable threats to the collective, the more “micro” discussion over the growing pervasiveness of neo-liberalism took on a hyper-nationalistic and symbolic routine, one that mirrored the iconic political and electoral debates in 1891 and 1911, both of which had also been based upon the potential for free trade with the United States. Most of all, the evidence points to a popular opposition movement against free trade, which not only significantly pre-dated the official political opposition, but in some respects created its message and focus.

Mubanga, Christopher Kapangalwendo. "Protecting Eritrean refugees' access to basic human rights in Ethiopia: an analysis of Ethiopian refugee law". Diss., 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/23205.

Texto completo
Resumen
Eritrean refugees are compelled to flee their country mainly to avoid forced conscription into indefinite military service, arbitrary arrest and detention for prolonged periods without trial. The majority of Eritrean refugees are young people, who leave their country in search of a better life and sources of livelihoods. The mass migration of Eritrean refugees has started to have adverse effects on the country’s socio-economic landscape. The main destination and country of refuge for the majority of Eritrean refugees is Ethiopia. Although no serious violations of human rights have been reported among Eritrean refugees living in Ethiopia, it a well-known fact that the Ethiopian Government has not fully extended the internationally accepted rights of those who have been forced to flee their own states, to refugees. For example, freedom of movement for refugees is restricted, which is obviously compounded by the encampment policy, which requires that all refugees should be confined to designated refugee camps. This situation seriously undermines the UNHCR’s efforts to enhance refugees’ self-reliance, independence, and chances of local integration. There has not been much research undertaken regarding the Ethiopian Government’s legal framework on refugees and its impact on the protection of the rights of refugees. In 2014, Ethiopia hosted the largest number of refugees in Africa. This phenomenon was largely attributed to the Ethiopian Government’s ‘open door’ policy towards refugees. The present study is an attempt to critically examine Ethiopian refugee law and determine the extent to which the national laws protect the rights of refugees. Although the study is limited in scope to the situation of Eritrean refugees, the principles and standards of treatment discussed apply to all refugees living in Ethiopia.

Resumen
Abstract Nutritional assessment procedures were first used in surveys designed to describe the nutritional status of populations on a national basis. The methods used were initially described following a conference held in 1932 by the Health Organization of the League of Nations. In 1955, the Interdepartmental Committee on Nutrition for National Defense (ICNND) was organized to assist low-income countries in assessing the nutritional status of their populations and to identify problems of malnutrition and the ways in which they could be solved. The ICNND teams conducted medical nutrition surveys in 24 countries. A comprehensive manual was then produced (ICNND, 1963), with the intention of standardizing both the methods used for the collection of nutrition survey data and the interpretation of the results.

Resumen
Abstract The notion that childhood provides the basis of the adult’s intellectual and moral status is extremely old. However, with the exception of studies of height growth, the idea that the foundation of adult health is prepared in the early years of life has been slower to develop. In Britain the findings of the Boer War recruiting medical examinations (MacKenzie & Matthew, 1904) and the Interdepartmental Committee on Physical Deterioration (British Parliamentary Papers, 1904) raised anxieties about the health of the nation’s young people. Although the outcome was of great value in terms of the public health care of mothers and infants (Dwork, 1987), the implications for epidemiologic studies of etiology were recognized much more slowly.

Resumen
Abstract On February 22, 1995, Senator Merle Kearns was presiding over one of her first meetings as chair of the Human Services and Aging Committee. A standing-room-only crowd was on hand to hear a bill dealing with child custody and parental responsibilities in cases of divorce. As Senator Grace Drake began a line of questioning with the sponsor, she abruptly stopped to ask Senator Kearns what title she preferred in her new role. “Do you want to be called ‘Madame Chairwoman,’ ‘Madame Chairman’ or what?” Senator Drake, who up until then had been the only woman chairing a Senate committee, added: “Personally, I have always preferred ‘Madame Chairman.”‘ Senator Kearns responded, “Whatever works.” An almost identical question was posed by a male lawmaker a day earlier to Representative Cheryl Winkler, the new chair of the House Family Services Committee. Her preferred title is “Madame Chairperson.” The two events are not merely incidents of self-conscious “political correctness.” They reflect the transitional stage at which female committee chairs in Ohio find themselves. Unlike the few women chairs in Oklahoma, who are largely defined by their token status, institutional practices, and political culture, Ohio women are defining roles for themselves during a period of institutional change and leadership transition. Because Ohio women are still relatively few in number and new to leadership positions, however, their long-term imprint on leadership practices seems less certain than that of women chairs in other states. But their impact has thus far been considerable because of real power rather than numbers.

Resumen
Abstract A central question about women officeholders is whether they make a policy difference in office. Michele L. Swers and Carin Larson offer compelling evidence that female members of Congress have been more likely than men to advocate for women’s issues bills, particularly feminist bills, throughout the legislative process. It is true that the prevailing political environment, such as the Democratic-controlled 103rd Congress and the Republican-controlled 104th, affects the extent to which women demonstrate their support. In particular, women’s commitment to women’s issues is mediated by both the party in power and their position in the institution, such as their status as members of the majority or minority party and their committee positions, but changing political winds have not eradicated their commitment. Whether it is bill introduction, committee markup. floor scheduling, or floor action, women are instrumental at all stages of the process, and their energy, effort, and effectiveness is demonstrable.

Resumen
Chapter 2 explores women’s strategic role as clubs grew up to support amateur activity. Unlike the early colonial cine club scene that was largely male dominated, Britain's cine club scene involved women from the outset and echoes other gendered patterns of associational and voluntary activity. Previously unavailable films, club records and interviews identify significant contributions by award-winning women practitioners, as mentors, adjudicators, writers, teachers and committee members that facilitate local to international events and bridge the transition from analogue into digital activity. Interviews reveal how healthier, personally wealthier and active retirees still sustain roles carved out by their pioneering predecessors. Background, education, marital status, paid employment and domestic roles contextualise how women maintained local groups during wartime, filmed club life and made films alone or with other members. Some became fundraisers, all became keen advocates and for some, film became part of their identity, whether working in non-fiction, fiction, experimental filmmaking or animation.

Resumen
Abstract Helvi Sipilä (1915–2009) was a Finnish lawyer, an advocate of women’s rights, whose achievements have remained largely unexplored. She held important positions in the UN as chair of the Commission on the Status of Women, its Rapporteur on family planning, and as chair of the Third Committee of the General Assembly. She took part in drafting of and steering the UN Declaration against Discrimination of Women, which later formed the basis for a legal convention, and solidified family planning as women’s right, expanding the reproductive rights of women. She became in 1972 the first female Assistant Secretary-General of the UN, and was in charge of the International Women’s Year conference in Mexico City in 1975. It was the first UN conference focusing on women, a turning point in enlarging and consolidating a broader international regime for women. Criticizing the dominance of the economistic approach in the UN, Sipilä advocated an international human and social order, based on a women-centric world view.

Resumen
Background: Studies have shown a sex difference in the cognitive dysfunction in the elderly where women are more susceptible to Alzheimer’s disease than men. Physical activity (PA) is an important strategy for brain health, but the exact mechanism is unclear. Santos has the largest proportion of the elderly population in São Paulo State (22%), but no studies have whether there are differences between the sexes in cognitive function. Objective: To evaluate the differences between the sexes in the cognitive function of the elderly and which factors are associated with this difference. Methods: Ninety-seven women and sixty-nine men were eligible for the study. Inclusion criteria were >65 years old, no severe cognitive impairment, preserved activities of daily living. Cognitive function and PA were assessed by the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and Baecke questionnaire. Results: The mean age was 75±7 and 73±7, for women and men, respectively. Both sexes showed a similar MMSE score (26, varying between 14 and 30) that was inversely associated with age. The influence of the schooling status on MMSE was greater in women (r=0.49, p=0.0001) compared to men (r= 0.30, p9. Conclusions: The MMSE score is affected by the aging process similarly between the sexes. The years of schooling have an influence on cognitive function in women that is attenuated by higher PA. Resumen
Objective: The VENUS trial is an ongoing prospective, multi-center, non-inferiority randomized controlled clinical trial aimed at comparing the disease-free and overall survival of T1-2 N0 M0 breast cancer patients subjected to either (a) sentinel lymph node (group sentinel) or (b) no axillary surgery (group no-sentinel). This is a partial report on the initial data collected 3.5 years after the trial started. VENUS differs from previous similar trials in that women undergoing mastectomy and neoadjuvant chemotherapy are accepted. Methodology: The protocol was approved by the local research ethics committee (CAAE: 068051 18.2.0000.5404). Initial axillary status was ascertained through physical examination and axillary ultrasound. Randomization is being stratified by age and clinical tumor size. Secondary endpoints include regional recurrence-free survival, axillary recurrence rate, axillary morbidity rate, ultrasound accuracy, and cost-effectiveness. The sample size was estimated at 800 participants. Primary and secondary endpoints will be reported after 5 years of follow-up of the completed cohorts. VENUS trial is registered in Clinical Trials (Identifier: NCT05315154) and ReBEC (Identifier: RBR-8g6jbf). Results: As of February 2023, 176 patients were enrolled and 156 were randomized to the sentinel (84 patients) and no-sentinel (72 patients) groups. The current mean follow-up time is 18.57 (+8.52) months. Patients are statistically evenly distributed across study groups regarding age and molecular subtype. Sentinel lymph node positivity in the sentinel group was 17.8% (1.19% isolated tumor cells, 3.57% micrometastasis, 11.90% 1–3 macrometastasis, and 1.19% > 4 macrometastasis). There were no axillary recurrences in both groups. Conclusion: Until now, with nearly 20% of the trial completed, VENUS showed no significant difference regarding its posted objectives in women undergoing or not sentinel lymph node dissection.

Resumen
Introduction: It is known that breast cancer is the type of cancer that mostly affects women in the world, both in the developing and developed countries, with about 2.3 million new cases in 2020, comprising 25% of all cancers diagnosed in women. Vitamin D concentration has been studied as a risk and prognostic factor in women with breast cancer; its deficiency is common in women with postmenopausal breast cancer, and some evidence suggests that low vitamin D status increases the risk for disease development. The impact of vitamin D at the time of diagnosis on the outcome of patients with breast cancer is less well understood. In view of the increasing number of breast cancer survivors and the high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among patients with breast cancer, an evaluation of the role of vitamin D in prognosis and survival among patients with breast cancer is essential. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between serum vitamin D (VD) levels at diagnosis and overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), and cancer-specific survival (CSS) in postmenopausal women treated for breast cancer. Methods: This is a single-center prospective cohort. The study included patients newly diagnosed with invasive breast cancer between 2014 and 2016, aged ≥45 years, and in amenorrhea for ≥12 months, and VD assessment at the time of diagnosis, before any cancer treatment. Patients were classified into three groups according to serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin-D [25(OH)D]: sufficient (≥30 ng/mL), insufficient (between 20 and 29 ng/mL), and deficient (<20 ng/mL). Clinical and anatomopathological data were collected. The primary outcome was OS and secondary outcomes were DFS and CSS. Kaplan-Meier curve and Cox regression model were used to assess the association between 25(OH)D levels and OS, DFS, and CSS. Differences in survival were evaluated by hazard ratios (HRs). The study was approved by the Ethics Committee (CAAE: 71399117.2.0000.5411). Results: The study included 192 women with a mean age of 61.3±9.6 years at diagnosis, mean 25(OH)D levels of 25.8 ng/mL (ranging from 12.0 to 59.2 ng/mL), and follow-up period between 54 and 78 months. Sufficient VD levels were detected in 65 patients (33.9%), insufficient in 92 (47.9%), and deficient in 35 (18.2%). Patients with 25(OH)D insufficiency and deficiency had a larger proportion of high-grade tumors, locally advanced and with distant metastasis, positive axillary lymph nodes, negative estrogen receptors (ER), and progesterone receptors (PR), and higher Ki67 index (p<0.05 ). The mean OS time was 54.4±20.2 months (range 9–78 months), and 51 patients (26.6%) died during the study period. Patients with VD deficiency and insufficiency at diagnosis had significantly lower OS, DFS, and CSS compared to patients with sufficient values (p <0.0001). After the adjustment for clinical and tumoral prognostic factors, patients with serum 25(OH)D levels considered deficient at the time of diagnosis had a significantly higher risk of global death (HR=4.65, 95%CI 1.65–13.12), higher risk of disease recurrence (HR=6.87, 95%CI 2.35–21.18), and higher risk of death from the disease (HR=5.91, 95%CI 1.98–17.60) than the group with sufficient 25(OH)D levels.
