In seeking to understand the relationship between university technology transfer and early stage venture capital, one must review the historical impact of the Bayh·Dole Act, the amendment of the "Prudent Man" rule by the Department of Labor, the historical association between academia and venture capital, as well as the rise and influence of formal and informal social networks. Within this thesis, one can observe the issues that arise in designing successful university commercialization processes and licensing relationships. Specifically, this paper will outline the common formal and informal elements found within the process of commercializing university-born technology and research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ("MIT"). Utilizing a sample set of licensing arrangements from MIT's Technology Licensing Office, a compilation of interviews with 10 early stage venture capitalists and a series of personal insights from academics and entrepreneurs, this thesis will seek to understand if a formal "entry point" exists for early stage venture capitalists seeking to harness the best university research for commercial applications.

Texto completoThe specialization of farms and regions toward either crop or livestock production leads to high environmental impacts worldwide. Yet, high-input specialized farming systems remain the mainstream. Opposing this trend, a few pioneer farmers are reintegrating (i.e. intentionally organizing the return of) livestock in specialized crop farms and regions. Such farming systems theoretically match the principles of agroecology, and may contribute to improve the environmental impacts of agricultural production. Yet, they have been understudied to date. In this Ph.D. work, I aimed to produce knowledge on why, in which contexts, how and with what impacts farmers are reintegrating livestock. To do so, I relied on an exploratory approach. I studied a wide diversity of French farms having reintegrated livestock on the farm or through partnership with a livestock farmer (i.e. with the crop farmer hosting livestock temporarily) including all crop and livestock production. I relied on a multi-level approach from the farmer, to the farm and the sociotechnical system, and interviewed diverse actors. I built on the innovation-tracking framework to unearth and document livestock reintegration as an example of agroecological innovation. I inventoried and ranked French farmers’ motivations for reintegrating livestock. Such motivations are diverse, the three main ones being: following personal ethical and moral values (e.g. aligning with environmental stewardship, undertaking a technical challenge) ; benefiting from ecosystem services, particularly soil quality and biodiversity promotion, to substitute input ; and improving and stabilizing income due to decreasing production costs and diversifying farm production.Beyond motivations, other determinants condition livestock reintegration. Through a transversal analysis of sociotechnical barriers and levers to reintegrating livestock in three regions of the world, I showed that such reintegration is particularly hindered by the lack of specific knowledge from all actors of the sociotechnical system and by the disappearance of livestock-related services (e.g. slaughterhouses) in specialized crop regions. Such barriers require collective actions to be raised. To contribute addressing this knowledge gap, and disentangle the benefits to expect from reintegrating livestock, I re-focused on the farm level and on French farms to characterize the changes in farming practices after reintegrating livestock and assess their agroenvironmental impacts in regard of farmers’ motivations. I showed that reintegrating livestock can be environmentally sustainable only if subsequent adaptations of the farming system are made to promote interactions between crop and livestock that reduce input use. As reintegrating livestock is a process of change by nature, I aimed at analysing the succession of events leading farmers to reintegrate livestock by providing a typology of trajectories they followed. The high diversity of my sample did not provide sufficient redundancy to do so. Yet, this failure questioned me on the way I, as a researcher, choose to emphasize or overshadow specific elements while analysing data and on how such choices condition my research results. I shared this epistemological reflection as an invitation to agricultural scientists to reflect on their research stances and practices. In my Ph.D. work, I provide first insights on the understudied topic of livestock reintegration by building a panorama of determinants leading to reintegrating livestock, actual changes in farming practices and their impacts. I identify sustainable forms of livestock reintegration that should be studied more in depth by research and identify conditions to support their scaling up. I contribute to enrich the innovation-tracking framework through an original approach studying across levels the determinants leading to agroecological innovations, and objectively assessing their agroenvironmental sustainability

Texto completoModern radio communication networks use complex modulated signals with high spectral efficiency, offering significant data rates. However, this comes at the expense of high peak factors.This latter parameter significantly degrades the average efficiency of amplifiers, leading to increased thermal dissipation, thereby limiting prospects for miniaturization, cost reduction, and reliability of the power amplifier. This work presents the design of an RF power amplifier >40W in the L/S band. This component has been specifically developed to be compatible with an envelope tracking efficiency enhancement system. To meet this requirement, a quasi-MMIC miniaturization approach in a plastic package, comprising a GaN HEMT 0.25µm on SiC active part, and passive adaptation circuits in AsGa (ULRC-20), have been selected. A multi-phase envelope tracking architecture has subsequently been developed to be associated with this amplifier and operate with complex 5G modulated signals, wideband with high PAPR levels (>8dB)

In response to the global trend of entrepreneurship, all nations around the world are dedicated to business incubation. Due to the rise of globalization and knowledge economy, innovation and entrepreneurship have become important issues (Sun-Quae Lai, 2006). In recent years, our government has also engaged in promotion of entrepreneurship. According to a 2012 survey released by Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), Taiwanese people have a higher intention to start up a business (26.85%) compared to most other Asians, and a high ratio of our people (70.4%) “view entrepreneurship a good career option”. These figures suggest most Taiwanese people have good impression of entrepreneurship. Besides, universities and colleges in Taiwan act as the main platform for promoting entrepreneurship to encourage innovation and business start-ups among students. This study described the author’s personal experience of starting a business during study in a graduate school. The author’s plans for each stage, including developing business ideas from scratch, designing product functions based on user contexts, creating an entrepreneurial team through collaboration with corporate mentors, and achieving the initial goal of patent registration, were introduced. Through a comprehensive review of the entrepreneurial process, the author attempted to mark important milestones in her entrepreneurship. The author also reviewed related literature to examine the methods used and decisions made during this process. It was found that user contexts designs were helpful for understanding user needs, and patent assets could help increase competitiveness and overall value of the firm. In light of the scarcity of literature addressing student entrepreneurship, the author wished to share her personal experiences and achievements with people having an entrepreneurial dream.

Texto completoAugmented Reality (AR) promises to create direct, automatic, and actionable links between the physical world and electronic information. It provides an immediate and straightforward user interface to an electronically enhanced physical world. In particular, Industrial AR allows the integration between knowledge-based information, traditionally used by operators and provided mainly in paper documentation and data available from sensors on equipment. This approach is suggested by companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, who want a gradual introduction of Industry 4.0 technologies within their established practices. The scope of this work is to develop an advanced technical documentation system in AR for a flour milling plant. The work discussed in this dissertation aims to bring added value to the existing literature in the field of industrial AR and advanced technical documentation. Besides, an attempt will be made to shed light on the role of AR as an enabling technology for the industry of the future. First, we focused on different industrial AR interfaces in order to understand established practices to guide IAR interface design. Then, we investigate the AR key technology with a novel approach based on patent research. Finally, the main result of this work is the design and development of two AR systems for a flour milling plant that following two different design approaches.
