Texto completoDuring the late Qing dynasty, a multitude of French engineers embarked on journeys to various regions of the Chinese Empire, assuming diverse and evolving roles in Franco-Chinese relations. Despite their diverse backgrounds, they were typically youthful and shared some common professional traits. They often enjoyed substantial compensation and prestigious honors throughout their careers, leading to remarkable upward social mobility. Their numbers witnessed significant growth from the mid-19th to the early 20th century. Initially, military engineers held dominance, but they gradually ceded ground to engineers from the state civil corps and civilian engineers who assumed multifaceted roles in commerce and industry. Concurrently, many military engineers entered private commercial ventures, which were expanding and diversifying. The enduring presence of French engineers in China was predominantly composed of civil engineers, drawn by factors such as marriage, religion and culture. Within the Chinese Empire, France leveraged its technical expertise to compete with other industrial powers. These engineers accomplished impressive infrastructural projects within the Chinese Empire, leaving behind them a rich historical legacy. Although not always synonymous with economic success, their achievements showcased both their technical expertise and the technological prowess of the French industrial landscape during the 19th and 20th centuries. Their written works, encompassing reports, blueprints, narratives, and familial correspondences, alongside photographic records and archives they amassed, serve as invaluable resources for historical research. Texto completoThe french diplomatic and consular corps in China from 1840 to1911 > presents a global vision of the french diplomats and consuls at the different positions they occupied from the middle of the 19 th century to the biginning of the 20 th century. This évolution is divided in three chronological parts. " The epic " from 1840 to the end of 1870 years, " The expansion " from the advent of the Third Républic to 1900, " The crisis time " from 1900 to the 1911 Révolution. In each of these parts, the evolution is analyzed under three different aspects. An historic aspect describes the action of the french ministry agents through the different events from the emperor Daoguang's reign until the collaps of Qing and the advent of the Third Republic. An geographic aspect shows the progressive settlement of the consulates and vice-consulates in China. An sociologic aspect describes the évolution of the diplomatic and consular careers specifically applied to China, as well as the evolution of the living conditions in this country. One hundred and fifty seven biographic notes completes this thesis

Texto completoFrom 1789 to 1905, China is one of the most exotic topics represented on the French theater stage. This China can evoke the imagination inherited from the eighteenth-century “chinoiseries” taste. And moreover, it witnesses the nineteenth-century Sino-French socio-political events, which are never detached from the rising colonialism or even the Orientalism.This work attempts to build up a repertoire of Chinese-subject plays, and to analyze the production and the reception of the Chinese image on the French theatre stage during the nineteenth century. The corpus of the entire repertoire can be divided into three categories: the French playwright’s creation, the plays translated or adapted from Chinese literary works, and the performances given by Chinese actors. Chronologically organized, each chapter in this work follows the decisive Sino-French bilateral events. The first three chapters examine the Chinese and Oriental elements which have been applied to the French theatre in the previous centuries, and which are reinvented and appropriated under the influence of Sinology, a new scientific discipline institutionalized in the first half of the nineteenth century. The last three chapters develop with the two Opium Wars, the Sino-French War in Vietnam, the Boxer’s rebellion, as well as the birth of the concept of the “yellow peril.”For the playwrights and the artists, this “China” is therefore familiar but strange, approachable but intangible, cliché but ever-changing, exhausted but exploitable. All these contradictions contribute to create a kaleidoscopic China on the French theatre stage

A retrospection of the extended meaning of the french word “chinois” led us to the present work about representations of China in french dictionaries. With the cultural history of dictionaries as the main theoretical framework, we have studied nine dictionaries whose publication dates cover 250 years. Through observations and analyzes on the formation, the change and the transmission of representations of China, we have uncovered complex influences of multiple factors about the dictionaries on representations, and the significant effect over time of dictionaries on the formation of stereotypes concerning China in the french language

Texto completoBy its short form and its fascinating content, the French fantastic short story proves itself particularly appropriate to the class of FLE. However, it doesn’t play any role in French teaching in the Chinese universities. This research aims to propose to Chinese teachers of French the introduction of some French fantastic short stories in the class of FLE and to give them some ideas for working with these texts. In this perspective, we try to investigate in the present thesis the fantastic works of some French authors, among them Maupassant, Barbey d’Aurevilly, Villiers de L’Isle-Adam, Jean Lorrain, Marcel Schwob, Apollinaire, in order to sketch a poetics of the French fantastic short story at the turn of the XIXe and XXe centuries and to establish a teaching methodology of fantastic texts in the class of FLE. Texto completoBased on the Polysystem Theory of Itamar Even-Zohar, this thesis aims to study the translation and adaptation of Molière’s theatre plays in China. The purpose of the author is to focus on the influence of the socio-historical factors in the transmission of the works of the great French playwriter in China, and identify the dominant traits of the translation and adaptation of each era. This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part, after a preview of the first encounter between the western theater and the Chinese public in the late 19th and early 20th century, is dedicated to the study of the first Chinese version of the play L’Avare. Then, the Chinese translation of Molière’s works in the modern era (between 1919 and 1949) is considered in terms of two questions: why the translators during the New Culture Movement couldn’t resist the literalist temptation, and why this strategy has given way to adaptation in the next decades? The last part focuses on the fate of the Molière’s plays in contemporary China. Molière’s comedies were first promoted by the regime to the rank of literary canon before being entirely excluded from the Chinese scene during the Cultural Revolution. With the end of political disorder, his plays have aroused interest among the Chinese public, and have encouraged new translations or adaptations
