Texto completoDuring the process of software development, a great amount of documents is generated with the purpose of registering experiences and decisions related to software project. Despite the effort made aiming at documenting of such information, in general, these documents do not contain enough and necessary information for the complete understanding of the software, for the reuse of the acquired experiences and the recovery of the process of decision making. In general, only the final decisions regarding the project are registered. The Design Rationale (DR) consists of the additional information to standards documents in a process of software development, aiming to facilitate its understanding, maintenance and reuse. In literature, many researches reveal the problems related to the activity of DR capture, especially related to the work overload during the moment of design. The development of mechanisms to facilitate the Design Rationale capture, during the elaboration of software artifacts, is still a challenge. In the context of CASE (Computer Aided Engineering Software) tools usage, users (developers) present great resistance, so the application of techniques to achieve the maximum usability in the tools becomes essential, aiming to minimize the resistance to their adoption. The paradigm of ubiquitous computing brought great innovations to the development of applications, since the applications are transparent; they present a continuous and aware context behavior, and aim the user-computer interaction become the most natural as possible. For that reason, the adoption of ubiquitous computing mechanisms in the activity of DR capture becomes an approach of scientific interest. The use of the ubiquitous computing makes the capture of the information and decisions related to software project be carried out on a more natural way, reducing the overload of using a tool that needs additional time for the DR storage, either during the process of making decisions or just after. This master project consisted of re-engineering of a DR tool and its integration with a graphical editor. The editor allows handwriting and offers a service of writing recognition in order to provide a more flexible way for the data entry and can be used in devices of different sizes and characteristics, such as Tablet PCs and electronic blackboards.

1. Keeping the Little Guy Down: A Debt Trap for Informal Lending -- 2. Targeting High Ability Entrepreneurs Using Community Information: Mechanism Design In The Field -- 3. Voluntary Market Design: Dominant Individual Rationality.
The essays in this thesis span two important and related themes in development economics: understanding and relaxing constraints to small scale entrepreneurship and designing markets in environments with weak institutional enforcement. Methodologically, the essays marshal both theory and field experimentation to study these issues. In joint work with Ernest Liu, Chapter 1 offers a new explanation for why microcredit and other forms of informal finance have so far failed to catalyze business growth among small scale entrepreneurs in the developing world, despite their high return to capital. We present a theory of informal lending that highlights two features of informal credit markets that cause them to operate inefficiently. First, borrowers and lenders bargain not only over division of surplus but also over contractual flexibility (the ease with which the borrower can invest to grow her business). Second, when the borrower's business becomes sufficiently large she exits the informal lending relationship and enters the formal sector - an undesirable event for her informal lender. We show that in Stationary Markov Perfect Equilibrium these two features lead to a poverty trap and study its properties. The theory facilitates reinterpretation of a number of empirical facts about microcredit: business growth resulting from microfinance is low on average but high for businesses that are already relatively large, and microlenders have experienced low demand for credit. The theory features nuanced comparative statics which provide a testable prediction and for which we establish novel empirical support. Using the Townsend Thai data and plausibly exogenous variation to the level of competition Thai money lenders face, we show that as predicted by our theory, money lenders in high competition environments impose fewer contractual restrictions on their borrowers. We discuss robustness and policy implications. In work with Reshmaan Hussam and Natalia Rigol, Chapter 2 explores a different facet of small-scale entrepreneurship. The impacts of cash grants and access to credit are known to vary widely, but progress on targeting these services to high-ability, reliable entrepreneurs is so far limited. We report on a field experiment in Maharashtra, India that assesses (1) whether community members have information about one another that can be used to identify high-ability microentrepreneurs, (2) whether organic incentives for community members to misreport their information obscure its value, and (3) whether simple techniques from mechanism design can be used to realign incentives for truthful reporting. We asked 1,380 respondents to rank their entrepreneur peers on various metrics of business profitability and growth potential. We also randomly distributed cash grants of about $100 to measure their marginal return to capital. We find that the information provided by community members is predictive of many key business and household characteristics including marginal return to capital. While on average the marginal return to capital is modest, preliminary estimates suggest that entrepreneurs given a community rank one standard deviation above the mean enjoy an 8.8% monthly marginal return to capital and those ranked two standard deviations above the mean enjoy a 13.9% monthly return. When respondents are told their reports influence the distribution of grants, we find a considerable degree of misreporting in favor of family members and close friends, which substantially diminishes the value of reports. Finally, we find that monetary incentives for accuracy, eliciting reports in public, and cross-reporting techniques motivated by implementation theory all significantly improve the accuracy of reports. In Chapter 3 I highlight an under appreciated facet of centralized market design of critical importance to developing economies with weak contract enforcement: often market designers cannot force participants to join a centralized market. I present a theory in which centralizing a market is akin to designing a mechanism to which people may voluntarily sign away their decision rights and propose a new desideratum for mechanism and market design, termed e-dominant individual rationality. Loosely, E-dominant individual rationality guarantees participation by assuring participants that each decentralized strategy is approximately dominated by a centralized strategy. I then provide two positive results about centralizing large markets. The first offers a novel justification for stable matching mechanisms and an insight to guide their design to achieve E-dominant individual rationality. The second result demonstrates that in large games, any mechanism with the property that every player wants to use it conditional on sufficiently many others using it as well can be modified to satisfy E-dominant individual rationality while preserving its behavior conditional on sufficient participation. The modification relies on a class of mechanisms we refer to as random threshold mechanisms and resembles insights from the differential privacy literature.

This research reflects on the vernacular design as a communication experience in the Amazon region. The analyzed object in the study is the draws of letters (lettering) painted manually on boards, facades, banners, and other surfaces widespread across the region that, based on the popular culture, aim to supply the communicational necessities of the informal commerce where they originate. The focus of the investigation came from the following question: what are the inspirations, particularities, and strategies that permeate the material and symbolic universe of this type of informal visual communication, without losing sight of its market potential and its relationship to the community? Therefore, this research used concepts of Benjamin (1987), Braga (2011), Canevacci (1997), Schutz (2012), Dewey (1980), Durand (1996), Flusser (2013), Kant (2012), Maffesoli (1998) e Paes Loureiro (2008; 2001), among others. Accordingly, the hypothesis presented here pointed that the informal visual communication, permeated by the universe of the Amazonian culture, contributes in the symbolic and economic scope directly to the reality of the community in which it is inserted. The methodology was based on the qualitative descriptive analysis, starting from field research, being that the collection of material (photography registration and interviews) started from August 2015 to January 2018, including two visits in each one of the three islands of the Municipality of Belém chosen for the study: Cotijuba, Caratateua (Outeiro) e Mosqueiro. It's believed that the importance of this research is focused on the possibility of contributing with studies that go beyond the technical aspects of communication, therefore based on the men in society, as well as, long-term, to be able to collaborate for a possible demystification of stereotypes about the Amazon.

Extravehicular activity (EVA), or spacewalks allows astronauts to accomplish some of the most important endeavors in space history. The importance of EVA will continue to increase as people venture further into our solar system. The spacesuit, used to protect the astronaut during EVA, is an anthropomorphic spacecraft that provides the physical environment a person needs to survive in the harsh environment of space. Although the suits are safe and effective, the pressurized suit becomes rigid in the vacuum of space, causing the astronaut to waste energy. Mechanical counterpressure (MCP) suits offer an alternative to gas pressurized suits by using elastic garments to provide pressure against the skin. Despite their many advantages, MCP suits are very difficult to put on, or don, making them infeasible for use today. A network of gas pressurized tubes is proposed as a solution to the donning problem. When pressurized, the tubes expand to become rigid, opening the MCP garment in the process. The system was modeled and a functional prototype was developed using a novel construction process. The model can be used as a design tool for future designs and the prototype serves as a proof-of-concept for this solution to the donning problem. The spectacular feats accomplish through spacewalks and space exploration inspire students to pursue an interest and career in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Since its inception, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has been dedicated to educating the public about its compelling mission, fascinating discoveries, and the complicated technologies it develops. However, as the United States slips in indicators of student performance in STEM subjects, many look toward informal education, or education that occurs outside the classroom, to spur interest in STEM subjects. To maximize educational outcomes, NASA has developed a strategic framework to guide its educational programs. This framework is analyzed in the context of strategic management literature and suggests that the framework could be more easily implemented if NASA were to refine its education structure using the strengths of each of its directorates. The proposed framework was implemented in an informal education project and evaluated to determine if a projects implemented under the framework achieves the intended learning objectives. Students showed an increased understanding of NASA's mission and the complicated nature of space exploration. Suggestions to improve future projects are also given.

A significant number of studies have documented illnesses that follow flooding as a result of people coming into contact with contaminated water. Floods cause health risks by exposing children to bacteria, protozoa, viruses and fungi through contaminated water, contaminated household items, dead animals and mould, as a result of inhalation, ingestion and wound infections. This study focuses on the impacts of flooding on child health in the informal settlement of Barcelona, Cape Town. The health outcomes of flooding are conceptualized within the vulnerability framework of Turner and colleagues (2003), which explores human vulnerability in terms of exposure, sensitivity and resilience. In addition, the framework reflects global environment change and it powerfully defines the term vulnerability. There were three main research objectives. Firstly, the research established factors and other stressors that determined the occurrence of water-related illnesses among children in informal settlements as a result of flooding. Secondly, the research explored and identified the flood-related childhood illnesses. Lastly, the research identified strategies households applied in order to protect their children from flood-related illnesses. The study was conducted through the administration of 45 questionnaires, 2 focus group interviews and personal observation. The study adopted both qualitative and quantitative methodologies in order to understand the perceptions of what flood-related illnesses were and what caused them. Results from the qualitative research were used to triangulate data from the quantitative research. The integration of both methodologies provided additional solutions to understanding the impacts of floods on child health in Barcelona. Ethics approval was granted by Ethics Committee of the Engineering and the Built Environment Faculty at the University of Cape Town. The research findings suggest that flood-related illnesses in Barcelona were a result of different and interlinking factors. The various factors included poor access to basic services, general poor urban health, and location of the settlement and household hygienic factors. In addition, children were more exposed to risks inside dwellings as compared to risks outside dwellings. Vector-borne illnesses were the least recorded cases. In order to mitigate child illnesses resulting from flooding the households applied both proactive and reactive strategies such as buying of medication before and during flooding, bathing their children after they finish playing, and sending children to relatives during the flooding period and cleaning dwellings after flooding. Research findings highlighted that there is a significant association between child health and flooding in Barcelona. The types of illnesses that were reported were mainly water-related illnesses, which included respiratory illnesses, gastrointestinal illnesses, skin and ear infections and vector-borne illnesses.

The dissertation is refering to the analysis of experiences in sub-normal settlements where the architect/researcher strived to plan, develop, and execute projects from the perspective of those receiving the investments, although Public Power contracted their jobs, by understanding that participating is being able to make decisions in some process that will change, either spontaneously or not, the destiny of a given situation, targeting a tomorrow which should be improved as of today. Thus, social individuals need to gather worthy information and stimulate discussions within a multiple environment that is diversified in away to perceive and cope with actually relevant issues of the scenario. Resulting from discussions, creative solutions may start to come up in the decision-making process that better meet the needs and wishes of the target population. Many conflicts ensued between the architect/researcher and the contracting party, Public Power, because of the differences of understanding and approach that interfered in the rebuilding of an urban area where the involvement or participation of users was mandatory by law to validate the loan itself. Among these differences, there was the divergent conception of what should be considered as quality for the population for whom investments were designated and what was constituted of low-income families. Also, what it is presents a methodological synthesis to improve project design and urbanization construction works in squatter settlements - favelas - by responding not only to public administration, but also to the population receiving the investment. The challenges include: the dimension of an informal education, and the empowerment of an active manner of popular participation that points to, from the populations manifestations, a citizenship quality, one which institutes the citizen as a rights designer to open new areas, enabled to influence public policies.

Texto completoNowadays, the biggest population growth occurs in megacities of the developing countries, where extreme forms of modernization coexist with large scale informal urban conditions. In the informal territories of these megacities, large concentration of poverty, social problems along with social and economic dynamics, creative initiatives and sense of urbanity is observed. Considering that currently 1/3 of the world population lives in poor conditions (in slums and distance outskirts), and that the urban poor is the fastest growing population group in the world, it is based on the understanding of the informal territory as part of the city, that new strategies of intervention in the megacity shall be investigated. Issues posed by the social and spatial reality in the megacities of the 21st century, such as quantity, density and new conditions of urbanity, require new instruments of investigation, new vocabulary and concepts and more dynamic design strategies. To intervene in these dynamic territories, more flexible strategies, capable of considering multiple futures, are required. Diverse urbanisms and different programs, rather than stable configutarions of permanent forms. In this sense, the research points to the process of co-creation as an urban design strategy in the informal territories. Methodologies of intervention within the informal territory of Heliópolis are the research object of in this study.

Abstract: In this paper we analyze the possible benefits of a psychoeducational intervention project, reducing the burden of informal caregivers of people suffering from schizophrenia. Being psychoeducation part of nursing care in specialized mental health and psychiatry, we tried to confirm the experimental hypothesis that informal caregivers undergo a multifamily psychoeducational program that includes user interviews of single-family emotional support, have a higher reduction of overhead that informal caregivers receiving usual care in a Therapeutic Area Community and Mental Health. To better confirm or refute this hypothesis, we used a study of experimental design with pretest and posttest randomized control group, a sample of 14 caregivers. They were grouped randomly into two groups, one experimental group (N = 7) and a control (N = 7). In the experimental group was held multifamily psychoeducational program with participation of the user individualized interviews and emotional support for three months. As an instrument of data collection was used the QPF Xavier et al (2002). It was administered with the informed consent of participants and formal authorization of the responsible service, at the beginning and end of the project in both groups. We did not find differences in means, statistically significant (p> .05) between the two research groups, the overload. However, we have found that the experimental group had a decreased burden 10:57% higher than the control group. The data support the decision to invest in projects of this nature, in that specific context because it is associated with benefits in reducing overhead, greater than 5%. In the second part of the report, we reflect on key clinical and scientific skills developed during the clinical stage. These competencies were based on therapeutic interventions with patients and their informal caregivers attending the Therapeutic Area Community. It was possible to develop skills in the field of helping relationship existentialist in family psychoeducation, training in social skills and methodology of scientific research according to a quantitative approach.

Texto completoBecause of today’s development of technical possibilities and increased demand for personality influencing informal education, influence of fiction illustrations to youth was analyzed. There is a lot literature about artistic abilities of children and book design; however youth attitude toward book illustration is almost unstudied. Therefore objective of work was to investigate influence of fiction illustration for youth, and tasks – analyze literature related to research problem; investigate influence of educational text illustrations for youth; perform qualitative and quantitative research, analyze data received and provide conclusions. Thoughts of philosophers, psychologists, artists and pedagogues regarding research question were collected and summarized. Analysis of fiction illustrations for youth was performed. Then, the influences of illustrations made by different artists in the different editions of the same book to reader were compared. Conclusion is that text illustrations have various influences: aesthetical, cognitive, therapeutic and other; and that illustrations of books can strengthen or mitigate, or constitute to text influence. It was made conclusion from questioning and interviews that different illustrations are acceptable to youth depending on interests, gender, capability, work perception characteristics; moreover, youth like when illustrations stimulate cognition, thought, imagination, forms mood. It emerged that youth visual expression crisis... [to full text]

Texto completoThe challenges faced by members of underserved communities in South Africa have frequently been reported in literature. To ameliorate these challenges, different interventions have been introduced both locally and internationally to improve the wellbeing of the members of these communities. One such intervention is the introduction of information and communication technology ICT as a means to close the digital divide and meeting the socio-economic needs of the community. Youth living in these communities are expected to derive more benefit from ICT interventions as they have been reported to be more technology savvy and dependent on technology than the older adults are. However, the failures of ICT interventions deployed by donors have also been reported in literature. Authors have identified several reasons for the failure of ICT interventions, but a lack of consultation with the beneficiaries of this type of intervention is common to many findings. The exclusion of the youth as major beneficiaries of ICT interventions causes a lack of alignment between the interventions deployed for their use and the actual wellbeing needs of the youth in underserved communities. The failure of ICT interventions increases the digital divide and frustrates the good intentions of local and national government as well as international donors to improve the wellbeing of the youth in underserved communities. By using the concept of wellbeing, the study aimed to explore how youth wellbeing indicators can be used to facilitate effective ICT interventions for youth empowerment and development in underserved communities in South Africa. Furthermore, the study aimed todesign an ICT-based artefact to prioritise youth wellbeing indicators in underserved communities in South Africa. The study was implemented through a qualitative research method using a service design strategy that allowed for a participatory research approach and co-design instrument for data collection from the youth living in Grabouw anunderserved community in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Data was collected from 40 youth aged between 15 and 30 at two workshops. Content analysis technique was used to analyse data. Findings from the research show that given the opportunity, the youth are able to determine their social-economic needs. A comprehensive set of wellbeing indicators was developed. Thirteen wellbeing indicators symbolising the issues in the community were prioritised, which are:unemployment, self-image, reaching full potential, family support, access to water, sanitation and electricity, meaning and purpose of life, being healthy, religious practice, educational level, future expectations, freedom of expression, skills to get a job, and access to skills and training. Overall, nine categories of wellbeing indicators were identified; of these, seven are similar to theGlobal Youth Wellbeing Index(GYWI) categories. Three new categories – aspiration, social support, and infrastructure and services – were realised. The three factors are an indication that the Grabouw youth may have special needs different from the global perspective as specified by the GYWI categories. Moreover, the priorities of the wellbeing indicators when compared to the GYWI rating for South Africa differ significantly, which may indicate that the needs of the youth living in underserved communities may vary largelyfrom other youth in the country. Furthermore, an artefact that can be used to prioritise wellbeing indicators was designed. It is important for stakeholders of ICT interventions to embrace participation of the beneficiaries as a means of aligning interventions to their needs. These stakeholders need to seek ways of developing artefacts that address the needs, not limited to health, so that the youth can take advantage of technology to improve their wellbeing on a continuous basis.
