Resumen
The goal of my graduate thesis is to design a dinner service set suitable for mass manufacture. The purpose of completing an academic study of dinnerware as an industrial designer is to gain a mastery of a product used everyday in and out of the home. With such a rich history in ceramics, it is challenging to design a new dinner service set that is functional, enhances the aesthetics of a meal and sustains the intimate relationship of everyday use by adapting to lives. My particular design ideals are expressed in the line quality, section, volume, breadth and visual language of the Galaxy Collection. This document is a record of the research and decision making process for the design of the dinner service.

Resumen
Ethnography is among the many tools used in social research. It refers to a set of methods and techniques used primarily by anthropologists in their fieldwork. It is about observing people during specific periods of time or while performing particular actions and writing about what was observed. Because people rarely do exactly as they state, a purpose of conducting an ethnographic study is to uncover meanings about an issue that may not be available through traditional evaluation methods. Field research has the capability of leading researchers and designers to the understanding of peopleâ s needs, wants and expectations; thus, resulting in successful product design. Without conducting field research, the ability of a designer to satisfy consumerâ s genuine needs and demands is severely restricted. Cognitive, physical and cultural differences are factors which distinguish us from one another. Such factors should not be neglected when studying the design process. Could it be possible, for example, that an attribute such as oneâ s gender can influence and effect decision making or outcome of a project? Although difficult to answer definitively, applying ethnographic research methods can enable us to gain a deeper perspective of the issue. The present study applied ethnographic research methods in examining differences throughout the design process. A total of eight students (four males and four females) from the Industrial Design department in the college of Architecture and Urban Studies at VA Tech were chosen to participate. In further support of previous gender studies conducted, this research attempts to show that females do have a tendency to communicate more throughout the design process. In addition, females tend to engage in more of a communal type of design process. Males, on the other hand, were more likely to work independently, with very little or no interaction among each other.

Resumen
Co-design is a process that allows designers to develop products with greater insight to user needs through the participation of users in the design process. During this process what users say, make, and do is investigated using common research methods in combination with newer generative and exploratory approaches created for this purpose. Co-design encompasses many design practices. Despite the prevalence of the co-design process, a lack of studies into the education of designers on co-design have been implemented, leaving a gap of information that needs to be filled in order for co-design to become integrated into design education and practice. The purpose of this project is to understand the current state of co-design education in the U.S. and to assimilate popular teaching techniques, by surveying teaching methods of co-design within Industrial Design programs at U.S. Universities with reputations as leaders in the field. This project also aims to design a learning aid for Industrial Design students derived from the findings of interviews, materials review, and literature. A snowball sampling was performed with schools leaders in co-design. Schools were contacted and given a survey, interviewed with selected participants and assessed on their materials and practices on co-design. Various qualitative data analysis was performed with the surveys, interviews and materials. The conclusion includes a composite of common methods for teaching co-design, which are assembled into a learning aid artifact. The artifact incorporates findings into a practical outcome. The significance of this project is to further research into teaching methods of co-design as well as providing a common framework for design educators to follow in higher level learning institutions.

This thesis aims to build a working design-analyze-optimize methodology for Alstom Power Sweden AB at Växjö, Sweden. In order to be profitable in today’s competitive industrial product market, it is necessary to engineer optimized products fast. This involves CAD design and FEA analysis to work within an optimization routine in a seamless fashion which will result in a more profitable product. This approach can be understood as a model-based design, where the 3D CAD data is central to the product life cycle. The present approach provides many benefits to a company because of the use of a central database ensure access to the latest release of the 3D model. This allows for a streamlined design to fabrication life cycle with inputs from all departments of a product based company. Alstom is looking into automating some of their design process so as to achieve efficiency within their design department. This report is the result of a study where an industrial silo is taken as an example. A design loop involving CAD design and FE analysis is built to work with an optimization routine to minimize the mass and also ensure structural stiffness and stability. Most engineers work with a lot of constraints with regard to material stock size and other design codes (e.g. Euro Codes). In this report an efficient way to design an industrial product in a 3D CAD (CATIA) program so as to stay within these constrains and still obtain credible computation results within an optimization loop will be discussed.

Resumen

Development of Industrial robots is becoming more expensive and time consuming over the years. A lot of costs are spent in the development, and so it is necessary to improve the conceptual design phase.

This thesis is an object lesson that shows one of the multiple ways to improve the named phase.

It basically consists on, using a CAD program, build a robot whose parameters have to be modified from a user interface. The parameters to change are the dimensions of the robot’s parts (morphology parameterization) and also the parts to use (topology parameterization), which can be chosen from a large library of different parts.

Some parameters are changed so as the build robot has similar mass properties to a given one, in order to be able to do some tests with it and export the results to improve the real robot. For this reason, in the interface done there is also written some code to get the mass properties of the built robot. Even so, this thesis only shows how to do the named actions but it has not been done any kind of test.

Resumen
The industrial designer employs a wide variety of design tools to externalise, develop, propose and specify design solutions. This use of tools locates within a rich set of codependent relationships: the character and affordance of individual tools; a designer's expertise in tool use; the influence of the pragmatic requirements of the design process; working culture; and the designer's idiosyncratic use of tools. The research addresses a need to continue to develop an understanding of how design activity is influenced by the use of various established and emergent digital, conventional and hybrid tools and the designer's attitude towards tool use. An adapted model of activity theory was employed together with a taxonomy of design tools and a description of Universal Tool Characteristics (UTCs) to explore the designer's use of tools during practice. Survey studies of two sample groups, design practitioners and design students, were conducted. The study revealed significant differences, between the practitioners and students, in attitudes towards the UTCs of some design tools. In a second phase of research semi-structured interviews were undertaken to further investigate relationships between individual design tools and the practitioner's influence on tool use. Survey and interview findings generated a new framework to comprehensively describe design tool use during industrial design practice. The work was translated into a digital tool (IDsite) that supports less experienced designers in developing awareness of the relationships between tool use and the design process. Findings indicated the ways in which designer attitudes are a reflection of existing approaches to practice. Student designers tended towards a more constrained, convergent approach that can lead to earlier fixation and the crystallisation of concept ideas. Experienced practitioners tend to take a more explorative, divergent and often iterative approach to design work, allowing their design activity to remain open to suggestion and revision. Evidence of this was made explicit through more negative attitudes from students towards those UTCs associated with divergent conceptual design: lateral transformations between design ideas; ambiguity in design embodiment; reflection-in-action during design embodiments. These pre-existing approaches to studio practice are compounded through the use of certain design tools (sketch modelling, 3D printing 3D CAD). The research concludes that awareness of, and engagement with, the relationships between tool use and the dynamic requirements of the industrial design process have a profound influence on attitudes towards design activity. tool selection and use. The research makes explicit some of these differences and how they critically inform the designer's studio practice.

Resumen
This study examines gender typing of industrial products in the activity of industrial design. Thus firstly, the meaning of gender, related theories and gender stereotypes have been reviewed through the literature survey in order to pinpoint the stereotypical attributes assigned to men and women through society and culture. Secondly, the effect of the stereotypical gender attributes on the act of possessing products have been examined. In return, a literature survey on the cognitive aspects of design has been conducted in order to question whether these gender attributes might have a similar impact on the design activity. The findings of the literature survey pointed towards categorical information processing theories as an appropriate tool to gender type products and also as a tool to measure the gender qualities of a product. To test the applicability of the methodology of categorization a study has been conducted with industrial designers and industrial design students in which the students were asked to design gender typed products and industrial designers were asked to rate their perceptions of genderedness of the designs. The test revealed the existence of a mental library consisting of categorized images corresponding to stereotypical gender attributes in the individuals, thus preparing the grounds for the use of this process in the industrial design activity.

From industrial design to design - a critical bibliography to the subject presents a bibliographic or anthological character, which has as one of its main goals become a basis point for future related research through the construction of a significant repertoire of information, supported on three basic parameters: articles, exhibitions and guidelines for teaching the subject. Therefore, it is an inventory of theoretical and cultural production, during 50s, 60s and 70s. From this broad panorama, the most significant articles for the construction and definition of the field of knowledge are highlighted and analyzed. It is in the sixties that the historiography on contemporary architecture and design panorama is improved with new and more attentive contributions to consider the importance and the conquers of the modern movement. At the same time, is also possible to identify a crisis of the concept of industrial design. In this same period, the international literature leave behind nomenclatures as industrial design, which was translated as desenho industrial, focused on the design of the product. The English word design will be used with wider meaning, including the complex relationships between production and technological, social, political, psychological aspects that surrounds the final result product. The work tries to understand the process of the construction of the concept of industrial design based in the modernist models and identify, from the sixties and seventies, as this crisis gets in the brazilian scene. The purpose of establish a repertoire of bibliographic references and contribute to the reflection on the meaning of this subject nowadays do not intend to establish a definition for the questions here presented, but just to contribute to the reflection on the topics in this country, highlighting the complexity of the debate, expanding the discussion on the parameters which should support the practice and teaching of the subject in Brazil.

Resumen
Augmented reality (AR) is a way of overlaying digital information onto a picture or a videofeed and has been used in industrial contexts for more than 20 years. This Master's Thesis examines if AR can be used to help maintenance engineers set up and maintain robot environments by visualizing robot movement and safety zones. The main result of the Master's Thesis is a prototype application for a tablet computer. The user points the tablet towards a robot filming it and the video feed is displayed on the screen. This video feed is augmented with a virtual zone displayed around the robot, illustratingthe area where the robot is allowed to move. The application fetches the coordinatesfor the zone from the safety system SafeMove { a system designed by ABB to increase safetyand allow closer human-robot collaboration. The visualization of a SafeMove conguration is currently limited to an image of atwo-dimensional coordinate system showing the zone as a set of dierent coordinates. Thismakes it dicult grasping the full layout of the three-dimensional zone. By using theapplication the user gets a better view of the layout, allowing the user to look at the robot from different sides and see the safety zone projected around the robot. User tests show that people working with SafeMove could benefit from using the application to verify the conguration of SafeMove systems and the conclusion is that AR, if used right, greatly can improve robot interaction and maintenance.

Resumen
This thesis is an investigation into why Industrial Design students cannot Design for Sustainability (DfS); that is, students are unable to design in a way that can contribute in real terms to a sustainable society, economy or ecology. To proactively address the question, a three year action research project at the University of Western Sydney took place within the sustainable design stream of the undergraduate Bachelor of Design / Industrial Design program. This study examined over 400 conceptual DfS scenarios, which were the outcomes of student assessment tasks at the end of the sustainable design stream. Using content analysis, the ‘conceptual design scenarios’ were examined against progressive DfS theory to locate the effectiveness of both the theoretical and pedagogical interventions. Through the process, insight into Industrial Design Education for Sustainability was gained to inform the three key findings of the thesis: First, the definition of the unsustainable problem being worked with strongly determines the quality of the design outcome in terms of DfS (how you define is how you design). To enable Industrial Design students to design for sustainability, a sound, targeted definition of unsustainability is first required, a task that has been neglected in Industrial Design Education. Second, the role of pedagogy is equally as important as the theoretical material to which Industrial Design students are exposed. The pedagogy of deep learning and a student-centred approach to teaching was employed. These assisted both to progress students’ understanding of unsustainability and to transform their understanding into Designs for Sustainability. Third, if Industrial Design students are to be motivated and engaged in DfS, sustainability needs to be presented as more than a responsibility; students need to see clear, feasible, future vocational opportunities in DfS. Hence DfS needs to be presented as an opportunity with explicit career paths for their future vocations. The proposed future opportunities expand from the product focus of Industrial Design. The three key findings of the thesis informed the pedagogical framework for Industrial Design Education for Sustainability that is presented. To summate, the thesis argues that students can design for sustainability if an appropriate understanding of unsustainability is defined (the problem context), supported by pedagogic processes to transform this understanding into appropriate and forethoughtful design outcomes, which are seen as viable potential proposals justified for real world applications in a transformed Industrial Design practice.

Resumen
The design of complex control systems for industrial processes is in general still based on experience and trial and error rather than on systematic process analysis and control system design. Typically control systems in the process industry comprise either single PID control loops with clear association of the process input and controlled signal or standard control schemes developed by intuition through the years (e.g. cascade control using an underlying flow control loop). Although many of these control schemes seem to work rather satisfactorily, in most major control systems several poorly tuned or switched off controllers are encountered leading to unsatisfactory process behaviour or manual operation of the process. The subject of this work is the development of a structured approach to industrial control system design which makes the potential of systematic process analysis and controller design methods developed by control theory available for industrial users with limited control experience. This aspect has been addressed within the collaboration research project between the University of Glamorgan and the Fachhochschule Hannover, of which the work presented in this thesis is a substantial part. Therefore, the ICACSD (Industrial Computer Aided Control System Design) scheme has been developed to allow the design of PID based control structures for nonlinear single- and multivariable processes that are as simple as possible and as good as required. Beyond this an industrial standardised controller design procedure for nonlinear and multivariable processes has been elaborated. For the validation of the proposed approach, a prototype control system design tool has been programmed, which can be integrated into the ICACSD scheme using a blockoriented simulation environment. The approach for industrial control system design presented shows the benefits of applying advanced control system design methods which are usable by industrial users when provided with an intuitive and usable graphical user interface. In order to validate the work the proposed control design procedure has been made accessible in the form of a software prototype with an economically designed graphical user interface allowing easy application of the developed methods. The prototype realisation for the Industrial Computer Aided Control (ICAC) toolbox supplies the new structured approach to control system design for industrial processes within a block-oriented simulation environment.

Resumen
Enzyme catalysis has been scaled up for several industrial sectors during the last decades, including pharmaceutics, food and beverages. This raised the interest of other industries such as energy or paper and pulp sectors, for which biocatalysts need to be improved in order to be economically competitive. Molecular simulations play a key role in finding new applications for enzymes and reducing the costs of experimental work. In this thesis, computational techniques have been developed and applied on oxidoreductases for industrial needs, under the framework of the INDOX project. More specifically, investigations have been focused on lignin degradation and valorization by means of flavoproteins and laccases. Flavoproteins are oxidoreductases containing FAD in most of the cases as a prosthetic group. On the other hand, laccases are multicopper-containing oxidoreductases that can oxidize a large variety of substrates. In both cases, oxygen can act as the final electron acceptor, producing hydrogen peroxide and water as by-products respectively, which makes them suitable for green chemistry applications. Research on flavoproteins - Efforts were made to improve catalytic activity towards 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation and secondary benzyl alcohols. To do so, a Monte Carlo based in-house algorithm was employed to sample the protein-ligand conformational space, revealing two interesting positions for the aryl-alcohol oxidase flavoprotein, 500 and 501. Experimental collaborators found several variants from these positions that improved the activity of this enzyme for secondary benzyl alcohols, which were then computationally characterized with the same methodology. Investigation of the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural biochemical reaction was also performed, revealing that the negative nature of the carboxylic group limits the diffusion of one of the subproducts. This problem was proven to be solved by using another flavoprotein, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidase, whose larger active site allows the diffusion of the negatively charged substrate although with very low activity. The activity of this enzyme increases with the addition of V367/W466F double mutations, and the main reasons have been identified. Research on laccases - The addition of a ruthenium photosensitizer potentially allows the oxidation of challenging substrates, although the electron back-transfer was presented as the main limitation. Electron transfer calculations were performed empirically, instead of quantum calculations, to selectively attach the photosensitizer to the surface of the enzyme, finding that increasing the directionality towards the trinuclear copper cluster was the best strategy. In conclusion, it has been shown how computational studies are a useful complement to experimental work, for the benefit of industries. In silico applications are shown to be beneficial in both ends of the process. On one side, predictions and designs are made to guide experiments, narrowing the spectra of mutations and reducing costs. After the experiments, simulations still provide insights of the reaction mechanism and information about the role of certain amino acids, to better understand the experimental results and, as a final instance, refine future predictions.

Why do we do sport? Why do we consider what we eat? Why have our parents done doctor’s checking for us when we were kids?  One answer is to keep our healthiness. Healthiness is a main key in my master degree project. In this project I have explored such daily life behaviors that influence on our physical healthiness. I have looked into the ‘health’ as a main topic and ‘quality of life’ as a sub-topic from three perspectives: medical science, life-style studies, and industrial design. I have collected information from specialists, designers, and target users by use of surveys and interviews besides of literature studies. I have applied the outcomes of the research in designing a lamp in order to adjust the sleeping and awakening time. The health-oriented function of the lamp is based on the colors of light which it provides. In Nordic country there is a special situation in terms of day-light. It is different in north and south parts. But in general in half of the year specifically in few month most of hours of 24 hours are dark and it’s opposite in another half of a year. This situation effects on a human-body biological clock and disturbs times of sleeping and awakening. To re-adjust right timing I have suggested using a lamp which provides a variation of lights from bluish cold to reddish warm.

Resumen
Three decades have passed since milestone publications by several industrial and academic researchers spawned a flurry of research and commercial, industrial activities on model predictive control (MPC). The improvement in efficiency of the on-line optimization part of MPC led to its adoption in mechanical and mechatronic systems from process control and petrochemical applications. However, the massive strides made by the academic community in guaranteeing stability through state-space MPC have not always been directly applicable in an industrial setting. This thesis is concerned with design and a posteriori certification of feasibility/stability of input-output MPC controllers for industrial applications without terminal conditions (i.e. terminal penalty, terminal constraint, terminal control). MPC controllers which differ in their modelling and prediction method are categorized into three major groups, and a general equivalence between these forms is established. Then an overview on robust set invariance is given as it plays a fundamental role in our analysis of the constrained control systems. These tools are used to give new tuning guidelines as well as a posteriori tests for guaranteeing feasibility of the suboptimal or optimal predictive control law without terminal conditions, which is fundamental towards stability of the closed loop. Next, penalty adaptation is used as a systematic procedure to derive asymptotic stability without any terminal conditions and without using set invariance or Lyapunov arguments. This analysis however is restricted to repetitive systems with input constraints. Then, predictive control without terminal conditions is considered for nonlinear and distributed systems. The invariance tools are extended to switching nonlinear systems, a proof of convergence is given for the iterative nonlinear MPC (NMPC), and a guarantee on overall cost decrease is developed for distributed NMPC, all without terminal conditions. Reference generation and parameter adaptation are shown to be effective mechanisms for NMPC and distributed NMPC (DNMPC) under changing environmental conditions. This is demonstrated on two benchmark test-cases i.e. the wet-clutch and hydrostatic drivetrain, respectively. Terminal conditions in essence are difficult to compute, may compromise performance and are not used in the industry. The main contribution of the thesis is a systematic development and analysis of MPC without terminal conditions for linear, nonlinear and distributed systems.

Resumen
Rack clad building (RCB) is a type of warehouse building system built using steel storage racks. Generally, these structures are larger and taller compared to regular storage racks commonly seen in superstores. These are built in a way that the peripheral frame can be used to support cladding. These structures possess some unique properties such as the members are built using thin walled perforated steel sections and the beam column joints utilizes teardrop connector in down isle direction. The hysteretic behavior of these connections is usually pinched type. Due to these properties the structure shows unique behavior under lateral loading. Until now very little research work has been carried out to determine the seismic performance of these structures. As RCB is a new type of structure, there exists no guideline in the current building codes for designing these structures against seismic loading. Here, a force and a direct displacement based design (DDBD) procedure have been adapted for designing RCB structures in the down isle direction. Finally, the performances of RCB frames designed under these two different methods have been compared and an optimum design method has been recommended for such type of structures.

Resumen
The thesis focuses on the industrial design role against a backdrop of the technological and business development of advanced personal telecommunication products - defined within this thesis as System Orientated Products (SOPs) - and systems. SOPs are becoming functionally and visually sophisticated but offer less physical feedback to users in relation to purpose, operation and value. The thesis argues that if designers are involved early during development they may enhance commercial success, help teams to explore user issues, and strengthen user empathy with individual devices and task environments. The literature review explored industrial design, models of product development, and user issues associated with SOP development (SOPD). Findings suggest that industrial design is characterised by lateral and experience-based problem solving activities that can expand understanding of design opportunity and end-user knowledge. Product development teams, in contrast, support different specialist interests, and therefore, it is harder to maintain a collective user focus. This is illustrated within linear models of the design process, defined by the Design Methods Movement in the 1960s, and early generations of the innovation process described by Rothwell (Dogdson and Rothwell, 1994), where the introduction of expertise is staged according to development activities. Since the 1970s more integrated and user-centred models (e. g. Quality Function Deployment or integrated New Product Development) have supported collaboration during development. The review concluded that it would be positive to organise SOPD around collaborative, user-centred goals. A qualitative case analysis of industrial design activity during SOPD added to the literature review and the development of guidelines that outline a designer's optimal involvement during SOPD. Five case interviews were conducted with development specialists in the UK to compare development activity. Participants included engineering manager Larkin, and industrial design specialists Berry, Desbarats, Hohl, and McBrien. It was concluded that designers rarely adopt specific SOPD strategies, but support development teams with wide-ranging experience and problem solving abilities, and help to focus user requirements. A design process model is proposed that positions the Industrial designer as an integrator of design knowledge within development teams when clarifying design briefs. Implemented as a web-based design tool and co-ordinated by the designer, it supports an evolving knowledge base for development teams. Evaluation of the tool involved implementing a simplified e-mail version with development specialists. An industrial designer was asked to explore a specified design opportunity, then an engineer and an ergonomist responded to the emerging data. The exercise was repeated with a similar sample of specialists to compare data entry patterns. Data analysis suggested that the tool would offer an open and unrestricted platform for developing a brief, and encourage broader exploration of user requirements. The research conclusions highlight the exponential development of SOPs over the last decade, and the rapid response made by the industry to new and emerging technologies. This made it difficult to prove objectively the research hypothesis. However, conclusions suggested that opportunities exist for broadening industrial design contribution within SOPD in light of the clear shift from a technologically led, to a user- experience- and context-driven approach, reinforced by collaborative and multidisciplinary practice.

Wills, Gary Brian. "The design and evaluation of industrial hypermedia". Thesis, University of Southampton, 2000. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/266377/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis proposes design, authoring and evaluation methodologies to address the issues faced by an enterprise when developing a large-scale industrial strength hypermedia application, for use in a manufacturing environment. The design methodology satisfies the requirements found in the industrial environment in a holistic approach. That is, the methodology takes into account the information structures, the constraints that exist within the industrial environment, and the background of the people who will have to implement the hypermedia application. The size and complexity of an industrial environment aggravates the problems found in general hypermedia authoring, especially in the areas of scalability, re-use and cognitive overload to the author. Hence, an authoring methodology is present, which addresses these issues. The design and authoring methodologies are evaluated against an independent set of criteria. The results show, even after sensitivity analysis, that when compared against other methodologies, the methodologies presented in this thesis are the ones better suited to meet the requirements of an industrial application. The design and authoring methodologies have been used to produce an industrial hypermedia application. The application communicated with existing information systems, factory floor equipment and the management network. The application has been used to evaluate the usability of the system within the factory environment. A cost effective user evaluation methodology was developed. Not only did it allow potential problems to be identified early in the project, but it also encouraged ownership of the project from the managers, maintainers and factory-floor operators. The user evaluation showed that, compared to an existing paper based system, the user preferred the hypermedia system and that they found the hypermedia application quicker and easier to use. While the majority of problems to be overcome, when introducing industrial strength hypermedia, are technical, some of the most difficult issues relate to the inertia of the management culture within the organisation. Hence, the strategic benefits and considerations when introducing hypermedia application into an organisation are discussed. In addition a model for estimating the effort to produce an industrial hypermedia application, has been developed.

Resumen
IoT- technology, Internet of Things, is a fast-growing business, it means that more and more products, clothes, even people are provided with sensors that can communicate and perceive the surroundings to create a smarter community. For companies to keep up to date, it is essential to continuously provide products with better components and reduced size. To stand out further, companies should provide revolutionary products, with totally new feature. One of these ideas, of a new kind of product with special features, have been investigated and developed in this thesis. The thesis has been conducted with the company CombiQ, located in Jönköping, Sweden. The product that was going to be developed was an industrial sensor, that uses the technology of IIoT, Industrial Internet of Things, that the company develops. At the time when this project took place, CombiQ did not sell any own product, only the technology that was placed inside the products. To develop the industrial sensor for CombiQ, not only the functions of the product had to be investigated, further the brand had to be analyzed to create a design expression reflecting the company. Through implement several tools and methods, from among other things the product development process and design thinking, a concept of an industrial sensor is presented that fulfill the specific requirements and functions. Where the main-feature is that the sensor should be a modular solution to be adjusted for the specific need of the clients. Furthermore, during the project a visual brand language with design guidelines have been developed to reflect the design aspects of the company CombiQ. Design guidelines can be used for further product for the company in the same manners, which also has been displayed by developing design concept of the rest of the industrial sensor that counts to the same product family as the modular sensor.

This thesis consists of three independent chapters in the fields of matching market design, industrial organization and competition policy. Chapter 1 covers the matching market for lawyer trainee-ship positions in Germany. Because of excess demand lawyers often must wait before being allocated. The currently used algorithm does not take lawyers’ time-preferences into account. Hence, many desirable properties are not satisfied. Then, based on the matching with contacts model, I propose a new mechanism using waiting time as the contractual term, so that the shortcomings of the current mechanism can be overcome. In Chapter 2 I analyze competition of two-sided online platforms, such as social networks or search engines. Advertisers pay money to place their ads, while users “pay” with their private data to gain access to the platform. I show that the equilibrium level of data collection is distorted, depending on the competition intensity and targeting benefits. Less competition on either market side leads to more data collection. However, if platforms use monetary payments on both market sides, data collection would be efficient. Chapter 3 studies dynamic pricing as in markets for airline or travel bookings, where competition takes place throughout a finite selling time with a deadline. Considering the inter-temporal problems of firms and forward-looking consumers, the equilibrium price paths depend on the number of unsold capacities and remaining selling time. I find that more consumer foresight increases consumer surplus yet reduces efficiency. Further, competition policy is especially valuable when market capacities are excessive. Moreover, ex-ante capacity production can be inefficiently low.

Resumen
Hexafluorosilicic acid (FSA, H2SiF6) is a toxic and corrosive by-product of the production of phosphate-containing fertilizers and hydrofluoric acid, with more than 2 million tons produced every year. During the synthesis of HF, FSA is obtained as a result of the reaction between HF itself and the inevitable impurities of SiO2 contained in fluorspar, used as feedstock in the process. Not only should FSA be considered an obnoxious pollutant but also an economic burden as it is produced at the expense of HF, decreasing its yield. Moreover, direct uses of FSA are limited and its related compounds, such as fluorosilicates, are regarded as low value-added value products with niche applications. However, hexafluorosilicic acid should be considered an interesting alternative source of fluorine and silicon. In particular, it may replace the most common Si-containing precursors, such as TEOS and TMOS, in the synthesis of higher value-added materials, such as MCM-41, as the cost of these precursor severely hinders large-scale production of this type of materials. In this framework, the present work consisted in assessing first and foremost the best experimental conditions to obtain MCM-41 from FSA. The effects of temperature, time, hydrothermal treatment, and the presence of ethyl acetate on the textural properties of FSA-derived MCM-41 were assessed through a head-to-head comparison of textural properties with the analogous TEOS-derived samples. A range of analytical techniques were used to characterize these samples including N2-physisorption measurements, FT-IR, TEM, LA-XRD, FT-IR, and WD-XRF. This preliminary study was instrumental in the synthesis of a FSA-derived MCM-41 suitable to act as a support in a 10% Fe2O3/MCM-41 nanocomposite by using the so-called two-solvent incipient impregnation technique. This nanocomposite may be suitable for the removal process of H2S from syngas (sweetening). After characterization, it was tested and its H2S-removal performance compared with both its TEOS-derived counterpart obtained under the same experimental conditions and a commercial unsupported ZnO-containing sorbent. The test revealed no substantial differences in efficiency for the two nanocomposites with both of them outperforming the commercial sorbent. Another obstacle in implementing economically sustainable large-scale synthesis of MCM-41 lies in the necessity of using a templating agent (CTAB), essential to build up the mesostructured framework, which is usually not recovered but rather burnt off during the final stage of the synthesis. In envisaging a possible zero-waste industrial process involving FSA in the synthesis of MCM-41, the importance recovering the templating agent from the as-synthesized MCM-41 is compelling. For this reason, an experiment aiming at extracting and recovering CTAB from with ethanol was performed. In conclusion, this work confirms not only the feasibility of using a hazardous low-cost waste such as FSA in lieu of more expensive precursors in obtaining highly valued MCM-41, but also shows that FSA-derived MCM-41 and the related -Fe2O3-containing nanocomposite feature similar properties and performance, respectively, compared with their TEOS-derived counterparts. In parallel, FSA-derived precipitated silica was also synthesed and investigated for tyre reinforcement. The syntheses tried to assess the effect of pH, temperature, reactant flow rate, reactant concentration, and reaction medium on the properties of such silica. The samples deemed to be the best were used to prepare tread compounds and the tested in collaboration with the University "Bicocca" of Milan.

Resumen
This thesis describes research in the area of automated industrial inspection using machine vision systems. It is anticipated that the algorithms described will contribute to the design of a machine vision system for the automatic surface inspection of cylindrical pellets. Firstly, the acquisition and segmentation of pellet tray images using area capture is described. Individual pellets are segmented from a pellet tray image by a novel system using the Radon transform coupled with data clustering. Subsequent to the segmentation, the linking of four pellet views depicting the entire circumferential area of the pellet is described along with a simple technique to compensate for intensity variations brought about by imaging the three-dimensional cylindrical surface of the pellet. The image processing techniques of filtering, edge detection, thresholding and morphology are used in the segmentation of grey level pellet defect images. The grey level pellet images are low-pass filtered and binary images formed using edge detection with thresholding. Binary morphology operators are then used in conjunction with a termination condition based on the number of objects in the image to ensure homogenous defect representations. The problem of overlapping defects is addressed, resulting in a second algorithm using the Radon transform coupled with data clustering. Prior to classification salient features are extracted from a set of synthetic binary defect images to form feature vectors. The novel idea of image object classification using 100% fuzzy inference is described, and results are shown to be superior to results obtained by feature space classifiers. The sub-classification of crack defects is carried out using a heuristic classifier, and the parameterisation of pellet defects is described.

Resumen
Sustainable materials are prevalent within design, but industrial design lacks mass-manufactured product examples. This research explores this gap in knowledge to understand the influences affecting the selection of sustainable materials and how UK industrial designers could be better supported. A comprehensive literature review explores the selection of sustainable materials within the context of industrial design. Existing tools and resources designed to support industrial designers are analysed to understand the support provision and requirements. The research approach explores individual attitudes, and the influences towards and against selecting sustainable materials. Four UK companies were studied to understand how sustainable materials are considered and utilised for mass-manufactured products. Two frameworks were designed to support and facilitate sustainable material selection. The first depicts the overarching support requirements whilst the second presents the considerations and strategies. Both frameworks were evaluated by experts and previous participants. A workshop with designers evaluated the efficacy of the second framework when used as a tool The majority of industrial designers were aware of general issues of sustainability but rarely considered selecting sustainable materials. All four companies had experienced significant changes recently, including increasing resources and internal initiatives towards the use of sustainable materials. The market for sustainable materials is improving, but risks exist, such as fluctuating availability and market instability. A lack of awareness and understanding has meant that, in order to succeed, some companies have designed methods to educate stakeholders whilst designers have requested support to educate clients. Personal interest of the individual is a key driver, creating champions who raise awareness and boost confidence amongst colleagues. There is a need, not only for greater education and support, but also to improve engagement with sustainable material selection amongst industrial designers and others involved in the process.

Resumen
This thesis describes the outcomes achieved by an industrial design school that has for a decade directed the energies of its students and Faculty to the question of innovation and the generation of intellectual property. Developing a culture of innovation is no easy task. Firstly, there has to be a desire within the organisation to be innovative; secondly, there is the problem of how to identify what constitutes innovation; and finally one has to combat the natural tendency toward risk aversion. Successful industrial design should be, by its very nature, innovative. Therefore, generating a culture of innovation is a vital requirement in the development of a successful industrial designer. Do we know how to stimulate, incubate and nurture innovation? What are the factors that give rise to an innovative mindset? How can this culture of innovation be quantified? The research was conducted using the grounded theory paradigm involving three distinct phases supported by detailed study of the established literature. Theory was developed by comparing innovation outcomes and by alternating data collection and data analysis. The study examined the effect on innovation propensity resulting from an iterative development of pedagogy. Strategies were developed which led to the creation of a distinctive pedagogical model for the promotion and nurture of innovation in industrial design. The emerging theory is substantive in that it is developed for a particular area of inquiry in a specific context. A statistical test of project innovation was developed and a psychometric test for the evaluation of innovation propensity employed. The objective of the thesis is threefold. Firstly, it demonstrates that environment, culture and mindset affect the innovativeness of the industrial designer; secondly, it presents a blueprint for innovation pedagogy in industrial design and finally, it provides a verifiable psychometric measurement tool of innovativeness in industrial design.

Resumen
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2000.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 63-64).
Engineering simulation models, industrial design form models, and physical experimentation through prototypes are critical elements of successful product design. However, the three disciplines are disconnected and the direction of simulations, form models, and physical prototypes often diverge increasingly as product detail is developed. This divergence often results in an expensive and time consuming design cycle and inferior product quality. The first 10% of the cycle is taken up largely by conceptual design, an iterative stage that requires close interaction between industrial designers, modelers and engineers. In the current state of the art, information is often lost when models are approximately reconstructed from physical prototypes, CAD or surface models. A new approach to the conceptual design cycle is developed and applications for the design of consumer products are discussed. The tools that make up the cycle work together to create a flexible, iterative design environment. Industrial designers, engineers, and modelers generate and exchange form concepts, alternating between physical and digital representations of product geometry. Rapid alternation between the physical and digital domain is enabled and information flow between iterations is improved.
