Resumen
The occurrence of disparities in society with female characters, Disney stories told about the existence of heroine characters in the Disney renaissance era. Disney stories had become part of a show culture that has evolved into the reproduction of gender roles. This study was conducted to find the female representation as a heroine depicted in the Disney renaissance as well as to analyze the reasons how Disney heroines struggle in claiming their equality as a woman in their society. This study was categorized into qualitative and descriptive research methods. Furthermore, this study used the theory of the renowned feminist existentialism by Simone de Beauvoir, one of the Feminist icons and Philosophers of existentialism, with her book; The Second Sex, Beauvoir represented the section of the independent woman; a woman could choose independence, which means continuing to carry out the process toward freedom without having the insight of a predetermined goal. Therefore, this study aimed to elaborate how the female representation as the women to fight their equality to their desire for freedom. Thus, the heroine character was expected to be able to contribute to society in terms of gender awareness, including women.

Resumen

Mrs. Gaskell is a very important woman writer in the 19th century in Britain, and she is famous for her social novels, in which she highlights complicated social conflicts. North and South is usually considered as the turning point of Mrs. Gaskell’s literary creation, in which she suggests for the first time that there should be a hope of a reconciliation between the working class and the bourgeoisie. Also, the author vividly depicted an independent woman with a sharp mind and a deliberate manner in the book, that is, Margaret Hale. She seems to be very special when compared with the women around her and very attractive to men for her peculiar thoughts as well as her beautiful looks. This thesis mainly analyzes the attractive heroine of the novel in three aspects: her independent character, her independent action and her independent thoughts. What’s more, the thesis aims to shed light on the characteristics a “New Woman” should be endowed with. The heroine, to some extent, is the author Mrs. Gaskell herself, rejecting inferiority to men and defending the rights to express themselves freely. All in all, this thesis tries to enlighten people on woman’s position in today’s society by deriving some inspirations from the literary work.

Resumen
This paper examines the three manga adaptations of Sarashina nikki (The Sarashina Diary, ca. 1058) written by Sugawara no Takasue no musume (Sugawara no Takasue's daughter) (1008-1059). The three manga adaptations were created in the early 1990s and in 2014, and belong to the genre of shōjo manga. Focusing on key episodes and scenes in the three manga rewritings, I examine how each recreates the heroine and why specific images of the eleventh-century woman emerged at the time they did. I argue that the shifting representations of the female protagonist in Sarashina nikki reflect social developments in Japan since the 1970s, including the decreasing importance of patriarchal norms and traditional roles assigned to women as wives and mothers. These adaptations show how the stereotypical view of young girls and women as cute (kawaii), which implies obedience, passivity, and dependence, has shifted towards a new, modern image of Japanese women who make independent choices regarding their social roles and careers.

The paper is devoted to the analysis of Mrs de Winter, one of the main characters from Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca, as an example of a Gothic figure. The analysis traces the stages in the development of the heroine by demonstrating how she first becomes, through the process of gothicisation, “the Gothic damsel in distress.” Vulnerable and easily threatened, she is defined solely in relation to Mr de Winter, her aristocratic husband, whose status she is unable to match. As a result of her growth as an individual, Mrs de Winter is degothicised. We witness a change in her attitude toward her tormentors: she no longer feels intimidated; she starts developing in what we view as an identity-building process her public and personal sense of a mature and independent individual.

Resumen
Our essay continues the critical discussion of Flora Nwapa’s treatment of the Ogene family’s involvement in the slave trade and domestic slavery in Efuru, as first articulated in Taiwo Adetunju Osinubi’s 2014 article “Provincializing Slavery: Atlantic Economies in Flora Nwapa’s Efuru”. We agree with Osinubi’s reading of the compromised liberation that Efuru represents and how patriarchal structures are upheld throughout most of the novel. However, we argue that Nwapa begins to outline an important shift towards her novel’s end: from a patriarchal, colonial order back to a matriarchal, precolonial one – at least for the heroine. We support this assertion by revisiting the relationship between Efuru and Ogea to point out its ambivalences, paying close attention to their dynamic at the book’s conclusion. Moreover, we contend that this change is most evident when Efuru is chosen by Uhamiri. We maintain that the wealth Uhamiri bestows provides a way out of paternalistic structures, as it serves as an antidote to the patriarchal inheritance by ensuring that Efuru has a source of income independent from her paternal family’s blood money.

Resumen
This article focuses on the relationship of Zahra; the heroine of the novel, The story of Zahra by Hanan al-Shaykh with "male" community. Zahra is not only the victim of her family but of an entire society also. Her father who is always cynical of her face which is full of pimples and expected spinsterhood, to her mother and her betrayal of her husband with her lover, to her spoiled and failed brother, her family friend who raped her and forced her to abort twice. Her failed marriage to a friend of her uncle and her return to her homeland, which seemed to be suffering from the scourge of war, and her belief in her ability to distract the mind of the sniper by establishing a relationship with him. Zahra couldn't be an independent individual in her society, but a tool that everyone can see from his perspective. Zahra suffered from the oppression of the patriarchal society, which gave the man the oppression and abuse of women without any deterrent or a pretext for their oppression. Hanan al-Shaykh The Story of Zahra is a real example of what most women in the Third World suffer from the dominance of male society and their control over women, spiritually and physically.

Resumen
The re-writing of a fairy tale caters for characters, settings and values that have undergone changes, be it explicit or implicit. In Juliet Marillier’s Wildwood Dancing, the main female character Jena is transformed from the passive and obedient Twelfth/Youngest Princess of Grimm’s The Worn-Out Dancing Shoes into a brave and sensible figure. She challenges the oppression of patriarchal rules by taking control of her household in her father’s absence, securing her four sisters’ welfare, and keeping secret of their nocturnal dancing trips in the Other Kingdom despite being threatened by her domineering male cousin. In this way, Gerard Genette’s Hypertextuality strives to investigate the underlying patterns manifested in both literary works by applying the Re-vision element. Through it, Jena’s and the Twelfth/Youngest Princess’ sensibility trait and the socio-cultural settings surrounding them are highlighted in order to determine the importance of the overall hypertextuality process that takes place between the two. Later, Jena emerges as the more influential heroine than her predecessor character because she does not stop struggling to be regarded as an independent young woman who can always give advice and make decisions for her family affairs sensibly. Also, it is eventually proven that sensibility is indeed a strong weapon to be possessed by women in order to empower themselves against the conventions of a patriarchal world.

Resumen
The denouement of Charlotte Brontë’sJane Eyrecontains multiple happy rewards for its heroine: a fortune, strangers turned friends turned cousins, the self-elimination of Bertha, and a Rochester still alive, still in England, and now free to marry. The hefty twenty-thousand-pound legacy (of which Jane only keeps one-fourth) bequeathed to her by her late uncle John Eyre allows Jane to return to the maimed Rochester and gleefully proclaim, “I am an independent woman now” (Brontë 501; ch. 37). Citing such financial independence, Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar briefly mention Jane's inheritance as the event that allows Jane to “follow her own will” and marry Rochester on terms of equality (367). Similarly, Nancy Armstrong writes that “[m]ore so perhaps than her virtue or passion, it is an endowment from Jane's wealthy uncle that makes her happiness possible” (47). Other critics, such as Elaine Freedgood and Susan Meyer, focus on the origin of the fortune – Madeira – and suggest that such a colonially associated locale implicates Jane in the finances of colonialism and even of slavery. Unlike those critics, however, I will claim that Jane's complicated relationship to the inheritance distances her from the problematic taint of the money's colonial associations and marks her non-conformity with and resistance to the economic practices of the British Empire.

Resumen
Indian writers including both male and female novelists generally utilise novels to reveal the psychological conditions of the female sex with the help of their dramatic personas. One such Indian writer is Rohinton Mistry, who unveils the mental states of women through his independent female characters, especially fictional female singletons. Among his numerous works, A Fine Balance is a notable piece that falls into this category. The novel is about the life struggles of the widow heroine Dina Dalal after the death of her husband. Apart from Dina, Mistry has used many widow characters who play minor roles in developing the storyline. The paper aims to exhibit the mental fluctuations of the fictional widows that comprise the widow protagonist Dina Dalal. The investigation with the help of the female characters uncovers the psychological oscillations of the widows due to their singlehood statuses. It unmasks the emotional transpositions, loneliness, fears, regrets, hopelessness and mental instabilities of the widows. The analysis avails the psychoanalytic Literary Theory to support its arguments and to obtain its objectives. With the aid of the select prose narrative, the research brings out Rohinton Mistry’s typical representation of widow characters to have psychological problems because of losing their husbands. Hence, the article projects that despite picturing the fictional widows as persons who are bold and liberating, Mistry has represented them to be psychologically vulnerable rather than presenting them as mentally strong and stable individuals.

Resumen
The following article analyzes Ubisoft Montreal’s art game Child of Light (2014) as an adaptation of the eighteenth-century fairy tale Beauty and the Beast (1740) by Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve, the less famous original of Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont’s canonical “Beauty and the Beast” (1756). While Villeneuve drew from the late seventeenth-century French salon fairy-tale tradition, her novel-length tale represented an ideological turning point, ultimately subordinating women’s independence and freedom to act in the public sphere, propagated by older upper-class salonnières in their fairy tales, to the bliss of love and family, typical of the bourgeois private sphere. Judging by the designers’ announcements that the game was meant to concentrate on growing up to adulthood, self-sufficiency, and independence, instead of marriage, and thus did not feature the character of the Beast/Prince, Child of Light might appear to have a potential to restore the voice of the older conteuses by, again, concentrating on women empowerment and the ability to act in the public/outdoors. In particular, I focus on the game’s transposition of the tale’s chosen fragments, namely: Villeneuve’s caste of powerful, independent fairies; class division dramatized in the tale; and, somewhat surprisingly, the self-sacrificing heroine, ready to abdicate her desire, or a docile daughter. In the case of latter, Aurora may not sacrifice herself for the sake of the man, but still must sacrifice her longing for family to become an egalitarian ruler devoted to public service, which, in the end, appears to peculiarly disempower her. Thus, Child of Light may be seen to nonetheless reiterate conservative values rather than propose a tale of women empowerment.

Resumen
The article considers the influence of the album tradition on the early work of Lesya Ukrainka: the disclosure of the features of this influence is the main purpose of this investigation. Landscape poetry is characterized by cordiality, simplicity and sincerity, usually consistent with some real or hypothetical everyday situation. Album work has its own characteristics, among which the most common are the simplicity of images, private themes, sentimentality and didactics. Ukrainian album lyrics maintained a close connection with folk art, in particular with the song. Hence the widespread use of permanent images of folklore origin and stylistic clichés, their repetition in different variations. During her literary growth, Lesya Ukrainka actively used the artistic experience of album lyrics. She was most interested in the thematic complex of youth: growing up, personal formation and self-awareness, expanding ideas about people and the world. The poetess revealed the topic of love popular in women's albums in general stereotypically - as a drama of sincere but undivided feelings. Her lyrical heroine cultivates faith in life and hope in spite of unfavorable fate. In the poetic expression of the author in the early period of her work was very attracted to the vivid imagery, pathos and a certain melodramatics, in part this led to the presence in her poetry of emphasized picturesqueness, evocative intonations, demonstrative emotions. At the same time, in some of Lesya Ukrainka's early works there is a noticeable readiness to partially rethink the expressive possibilities of the album tradition by searching for complications and combining them with other sources. In the process of interaction with the album experience, gradually, more and more fully, from work to work, the independent creative profile of the young author was expressed.

Resumen
Although she did not feature in W. T. Stead's influential 1894 essay “The Novel of the Modern Woman,” Ménie Muriel Dowie (1867–1945) was firmly established as one of the pre-eminent New Woman writers after the publication of Gallia in 1895. A controversial novel in which “the eugenic project is overt,” Gallia has been of some interest to scholars of the New Woman novel (Ledger 70). Despite this, Dowie remains one of the more obscure of the New Woman writers and her work beyond Gallia is seldom discussed. However, one hundred years after its first publication, Gallia was reprinted by Everyman in 1995. Helen Small's introduction to this edition also contains the fullest account of Dowie's life to date, in which the author is shown to be “every bit as defiant of convention as the heroine of her first novel” (xxvi). But, as Small points out in this introduction, it was her 1891 book A Girl in the Karpathians, a vivacious account of a summer of intrepid independent travel undertaken in 1890 when Dowie was twenty-two years old and unmarried, as opposed to Gallia that first established Dowie's considerable contemporary literary reputation. A Girl in the Karpathians enjoyed enthusiastic reviews and impressive sales. The Review of Reviews deemed it “[t]he most noticed, and in some respects most noticeable, book of the month” (“The New Books of the Month” 627). In the first year alone, the book went through five English, four American, and one German edition, and its author quickly became something of a literary celebrity (Small xxviii). According to John Sutherland, Dowie proudly claimed that the book received four hundred reviews, all unanimous in their praise (195).

Resumen
In this research work, Nella Larsen's two novels Quicksand and Passing explores the structures of the African American female identity. It investigate the textual depictions of Beauty, segregation and racial identity, and how these demonstrations are based in Harlem Renaissance literature and the broader literary canon on the stereotypes of the American women's identity. This study also demonstrated how both texts novels defy stereotypes of African American women by portraying women capable of liberty while condemning a culture that deprives them of their freedom and identities. Talking about race still causes discomfort, especially when trying to demonstrate how strategies for maintaining whiteness work as a hierarchical process, and that is why it is necessary that identities become key elements to open this path that is sometimes so tortuous and thorny. Passing exemplifies that the very notion of Whiteness must be questioned in order to illustrate that the debate about identities must not be dissociated from the question of race. Quicksand explores modern modes in which African American women represent identity by struggling to find their place in society in Larsen's first novel. Both novels challenge stereotypes of African-American women by depicting independent women and criticizing a culture that denies them agency and identity. This work portray protagonists and how fights against racial stereotypes, despite the difficulties they faced. For characters in Passing, beauty is very important, whom Larsen portrays as constantly assessing the physical appearances of other people, taking care of their own and worrying about how they appear. Also examines how Larsen employs mirrors, an unreliable speaker and unclear states to comment on the inefficient and dangerous effects on American society of segregation and assimilation. Her use of a distrusted, yet loyal-race heroine has revealed the traps in enabling the division between racial and social duties of a complete civilization.

Abstract Sami Michael and Eli Amir - two Israeli writers born in Iraq and of the same generation (Sami Makhail was born in Baghdad in 1926 and Eli Amir in 1937). They wrote in their novels, among other things, about Orientalism , love and femininity. They both lived wild, extroverted lives. They did not shy away from experiencing anything new that came their way, rebelled against conventions and acted provocatively; they enjoyed the shock and amazement that evoked around them. While trying to find their place in different family settings, they chose to present two Arab Christian heroines. The narrator in Jasmine is the speaker Noori-Eli himself. While the narrator of “Trumpet in the Wadi” is Huda the heroine herself. Both are independent and both have a hobby in which they invest a lot; which is reading. The families of the two protagonists undergo social changes during the plot, and when necessary they both work to provide the family needs. First, the study sheds light on the importance of the Arabs in Israeli literature as reflected in Sami Michael's book: "Trumpet in the Wadi" "(2008) and Eli Amir's: Jasmine (2005). It, also, provides summaries of the two novels and discusses the character of the Arabic Christian woman as described in both novels. Chapter two debates the characters of Huda and Jasmine and similarities of the two in representing their time. The chapter also compares the recurring image of the Christian Arab character in the two novels, the concept of racism, characters description, as well as the subjects discussed throughout the books with an number of citation taken from the book.

Sixty-five heroin abusers receiving Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT), 38 heroin abusers not receiving MMT, and 30 nonusers of drugs participated in this investigation of cognition in heroin and methadone users. Heroin users were measured for both implicit and explicit cognition, while the control group of nonusers was measured only for implicit cognition. The results demonstrate that implicit cognition can influence the development of addictive behaviors, and that implicit and explicit cognition of heroin were separate and independent constructs. Based on the results of Implicit Association Tests (IAT; Greenwald, McGhee, & Schwartz, 1998) MMT appears to be a valid method for opiate withdrawal treatment as it reverses the implicit desire for heroin in heroin abusers.

Resumen
“The Queen of Spades” by Pushkin is considered in the article as two stories in one: the first is an exemplary, in the spirit of Hoffmann, fantastic story, very convincing from the point of view of the “poetics of expressiveness” and completely independent; the second is “analytical”, which contains the possibility of explaining a fantastic plot and, consequently, its “cancellation”. This “cancellation” itself has already been made by the author in another article, and this one is devoted to its consequences: filling in various kinds of omissions and omissions, the main one of which is the Paris episode. After the cancellation of the fantastic plot, it comes to the fore and poses many new mysteries to the reader. This story is structured as an analytical riddle with pre-given, incompatible answers to the question of what the secret of the three cards is (a chance, a fairy tale, powder cards, a joke). Since this secret is revealed three times in The Queen of Spades, it is possible to prove that all these answers are correct in relation to certain episodes of this story. The “cancellation” of the fantastic plot transforms both the events and the characters of this story. The heroine of the Paris episode turns out to be not a frivolous beauty who came to Paris to waste her life and her husband’s millions, but Catherine’s maid of honor and confidant. It was in this role that she was briefly acquainted with the Count of Saint-Germain, who helped her out with money by inventing the secret of three cards for her husband. The story of Chaplitsky, who lost a huge sum, “I remember, to Zorich,” that is, to Catherine’s favorite, also appears in a different light. Consideration of the historical context to which the formula “sixty years ago” refers allows us to see the Paris episode of “The Queen of Spades” as one of the fragments of a possible historical novel, a kind of double of “The Captain’s Daughter,” written by Pushkin three years later. The action of this unwritten novel could take place against the backdrop of the RussianTurkish war, Polish events, intrigues of European governments, the Pugachev rebellion – the whole complex of political circumstances in the life of Europe and Russia “sixty years ago.”

Resumen
The art form of villupattu is one of the oldest forms of folk liturgy and is known to have originated from the times when it lived as a hunting community. It can be seen that Villuppaattu was also significant among the art forms performed in the characteristics of cultural life. It should be noted that Villuppaattu later took the initiative of social reform beyond the nature of entertainment. In the run-up to the completion of the worship at the temple festivsals, the artists begin the villuppaattu performance. This art is performed not by a single person but by a small group of organized individuals with a variety of musical instruments. This art form is executed in such a way that at the height of the story, their leadership excellence prevails by narrating the life events of the protagonist or the heroine, such as the preservation, the recitation of the meaning of the word, the singing of the guru, modesty on the public stage, the resources of the country, or the scene of Kailash, the life of the male protagonist or the female protagonist. In this system, the system of the continuation of the story is also used. That is to say, the narrative of continuing the story refers to the tendency to continue the story of the first day's event into the event the next day. In particular, the narratives of Villuppaattu sing not only the deity but also the specialties of their own country. Such a singing category is called "Swadeshi Stories." It is noteworthy that it is these Swadeshi stories that direct the audience to a cultured state. The singing of minor deities also plays an important role in the structuralism of the Villuppaattu in the manuscripts sung through copies of the same. Not only this, but there is also the tradition of singing the stories that are loved. On the basis of this, the independent nature of this art form is known. The concluding part of the structuralism of Villupattu is to thank God for the excellent completion of the Villuppattu. Not only this, but one of the peculiarities of this art is that the tradition of thanking all those who have contributed to this event is also situated in Mangalam (Conclusion), which is not different from this art form, but is a part of this art form. This study shows that the existence and development of this art form of Villuppaattu are due to the assimilation of changes in content and form from time to time.

Resumen
AbstractBackgroundAbuse or unintended overdose (OD) of opiates and heroin may result in prehospital and emergency department (ED) care. Prehospital naloxone use has been suggested as a surrogate marker of community opiate ODs. The study objective was to verify externally whether prehospital naloxone use is a surrogate marker of community opiate ODs by comparing Emergency Medical Services (EMS) naloxone administration records to an independent database of ED visits for opiate and heroin ODs in the same community.MethodsA retrospective chart review of prehospital and ED data from July 2009 through June 2013 was conducted. Prehospital naloxone administration data obtained from the electronic medical records (EMRs) of a large private EMS provider serving a metropolitan area were considered a surrogate marker for suspected opiate OD. Comparison data were obtained from the regional trauma/psychiatric ED that receives the majority of the OD patients. The ED maintains a de-identified database of narcotic-related visits for surveillance of narcotic use in the metropolitan area. The ED database was queried for ODs associated with opiates or heroin. Cross-correlation analysis was used to test if prehospital naloxone administration was independent of ED visits for opiate/heroin ODs.ResultsNaloxone was administered during 1,812 prehospital patient encounters, and 1,294 ED visits for opiate/heroin ODs were identified. The distribution of patients in the prehospital and ED datasets did not differ by gender, but it did differ by race and age. The frequency of naloxone administration by prehospital providers varied directly with the frequency of ED visits for opiate/heroin ODs. A monthly increase of two ED visits for opiate-related ODs was associated with an increase in one prehospital naloxone administration (cross-correlation coefficient [CCF]=0.44; P=.0021). A monthly increase of 100 ED visits for heroin-related ODs was associated with an increase in 94 prehospital naloxone administrations (CCF=0.46; P=.0012).ConclusionsFrequency of naloxone administration by EMS providers in the prehospital setting varied directly with frequency of opiate/heroin OD-related ED visits. The data correlated both for short-term frequency and longer term trends of use. However, there was a marked difference in demographic data suggesting neither data source alone should be relied upon to determine which populations are at risk within the community.LindstromHA, ClemencyBM, SnyderR, ConsiglioJD, MayPR, MoscatiRM. AbstractBackgroundChronic opioid exposure is common world-wide, but behavioural performance remains under-investigated. This study aimed to investigate visuospatial memory performance in opioid-exposed and dependent clinical populations and its associations with measures of intelligence and cognitive impulsivity.MethodsWe recruited 109 participants: (i) patients with a history of opioid dependence due to chronic heroin use (n = 24), (ii) heroin users stabilised on methadone maintenance treatment (n = 29), (iii) participants with a history of chronic pain and prescribed tramadol and codeine (n = 28) and (iv) healthy controls (n = 28). The neuropsychological tasks from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery included the Delayed Matching to Sample (DMS), Pattern Recognition Memory, Spatial Recognition Memory, Paired Associate Learning, Spatial Span Task, Spatial Working Memory and Cambridge Gambling Task. Pre-morbid general intelligence was assessed using the National Adult Reading Test.ResultsAs hypothesised, this study identified the differential effects of chronic heroin and methadone exposures on neuropsychological measures of visuospatial memory (p < 0.01) that were independent of injecting behaviour and dependence status. The study also identified an improvement in DMS performance (specifically at longer delays) when the methadone group was compared with the heroin group and also when the heroin group was stabilised onto methadone. Results identified differential effects of chronic heroin and methadone exposures on various neuropsychological measures of visuospatial memory independently from addiction severity measures, such as injecting behaviour and dependence status.

Resumen
The research discussed a different representations of femininity through the villainesses and heroines in two Korean webtoons (web cartoons). Traditionally, villainesses were depicted as undesirable antagonists as they did not fit into the frame of traditional femininity or were merely viewed as sexually attractive. However, the traditional aspects of femininity were now contested by the villainess protagonists. Utilizing Butler’s theory of gender performativity along with Kress and van Leeuwen’s visual analysis, the protagonists’ and antagonists’ thoughts, actions, and appearance were analyzed. A descriptive qualitative analysis was conducted on two webtoons, The Villainess Reverses the Hourglass, and It Looks Like I’ve Fallen into the World of a Reverse Harem Game. The studied data are selected from chapters 1-45 in each webtoon. The results show that the villainess protagonists are depicted as more independent, have more power, and occasionally dress in a masculine way, while the heroines-turned-antagonists are illustrated as a dependent, lack power, and always dressed femininely. In this case, the heroines-turned-antagonists’ traits represent Korea’s traditional notion of femininity. Meanwhile, the villainess protagonists possess traits opposing the heroines’ traits. Positioning the villainesses as protagonists and heroines as antagonists show a clash of modern vs. traditional notion of femininity, and putting the ‘villainesses’ as the desirable protagonists imply how their representation of femininity is considered more favorable in the modern context.

AbstractObjectives:To compare the prevalence ofStaphylococcus aureusand methicillin-resistantS. aureus(MRSA) carriage among injection drug users (IDUs) treated in an injection heroin maintenance program with that among IDUs treated in an oral methadone program, and to determine predictors ofS. aureuscarriage.Design:Survey.Setting:Two opiate maintenance programs at a psychiatrie university clinic.Participants:A volunteer sample consisting of 94 (74%) of 127 IDUs treated in an injection opiate maintenance program with at least twice daily injections of heroin, and 70 (56%) of 125 IDUs treated in an oral methadone program. Results:Addicts treated in the intravenous heroin substitution program had a significantly lower overall rate ofS. aureuscarriage (37 of 94 [39.4%] vs 42 of 70 [60%];P= .009) and a significantly lower rate of nasal carriage (21 of 94 [22.3%] vs 30 of 70 [42.9%];P= .005) than did addicts treated in the oral methadone program. Being treated in the oral methadone program was the only independent predictor ofS. aureuscarriage (odds ratio, 2.27; 95% confidence interval, 1.19-4.31;P=.012). AllS. aureusisolates were susceptible to oxacillin. Conclusions:The regular use of needles under aseptic conditions did not increase the rate ofS. aureuscarriage among IDUs. Further studies are necessary to investigate whether the lower rate ofS. aureuscarriage among IDUs treated with intravenous heroin leads to a lower incidence ofS. aureusinfections in these patients.

Abstract: National awareness to evict colonialization is a nationalism issue of a nation. Nationalism in a colourized territory is a reaction from various social and political pressures of the colonizers. Indonesia had suffered from colonialization for many times, such as colonializations by Portuguese, Dutch, English, and Japanese. The trajectories of European and East Asian colonialization in Indonesia have clearly recorded in modem Indonesian literature, for instance in three modern Indonesian poems, namely "Hang Tuah", written by Amir Hamzah which recorded the resistance trajectory against Portuguese colonial, '' Apa Kata Laut Banda" written by Mansur Samin which recorded the resistance trdject01y of Maluku's heroine against the Dutch colonial, and "Sontanglelo" written by Mansur Samin which recorded the resistance trajectory of a Barak young man against Japanese colonial. The three modem Indonesian poems are selected as examples in a discussion of the postcolonial critic by the reasons: (1) The three poems are records of the national history about colonial trajectory in Indonesia, i.c. a spirit of a national awareness to independent, free from colonialism and arousing the nationalism spirit of a nation. (2) The three poems were written in the form of narrative poems or ballads presenting the stories of a nation resistance against colonialism, i.e. represented by Hang Tuah who fought against Portuguese colonialism, Maria Martha Christina who fought against Dutch colonialism, and Sontanglelo who fought against Japanese colonialism. The realization of the three characters is a reaction to the colonial's social and political pressures in liberating their nation. Keywords: national awareness. nationalism, colonialism, postcolonial, liberation.

Resumen
Starting from the theories that prolong mayor influence of media as the agency of socialization and criticism of gender representation in the media, in this work we observed whether the image of women in Disney?s animated films has changed during the time, and if so, in which way the change happened. Basic dimensions of gender roles of the heroines that have been placed in one of the most influential franchises named Disney?s Princesses are described in the essay. More precisely, all of the 12 animated films and 13 heroines that had been emerging from 1937 to 2013 were embraced in the analysis. During the research close attention has been given to the activities heroines are committed to, communications they make, their physical appearance, goals, and also the attitude towards marriage and sexuality. The main finding is that the ?oldest? heroines (those who appeared between 1937 and 1959) are represented in accordance with the expectations of the patriarchal culture of the period (an obedient and a hardworking woman, excluded from a society, with getting married as her only life goal), while the latter princesses are presented in a highly different manner, being independent, educated and rebellious. Also the analysis showed that with the princesses that made appearance during the last decade, various trends have appeared. It turned out that some of them have chosen the road of emancipation while the other ones show indications of retraditionalization.

Resumen
Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Aurora Leigh is an unusual Victorian heroine because she ultimately combines career and marriage. Although Aurora's story has been recognized as an important revision of a traditional woman's story by such famous readers as Virginia Woolf (182–92) and Ellen Moers (60–62), some feminist critics have been disturbed by the ending, even as they describe its compelling feminist vision. Rachel Blau DuPlessis, while acknowledging that the story is a “rescripting,” argues that “being an artist is, at the end, reinterpreted as self-sacrifice for the woman, and thus is aligned with feminine ideology” (87). Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar argue that Aurora has to learn “not to be herself,” that is, she must learn sympathy and service (576–77). Deirdre David goes even further in asserting Barrett Browning's conservatism when she argues that Aurora's art does not subvert Romney's authority; instead, feminine art serves “male socialist politics” and “a woman's voice [speaks] patriarchal discourse – boldly, passionately, and without rancor” (134).

Resumen
When the basic characteristics of the Turkish nation are mentioned, the first values that come to mind are heroism, victory and independence. It is very important that children, who are described as the future of societies, are raised with these values In this research, it is aimed to examine the activities with the theme of heroism, victory and independence in primary school textbooks with the views of teachers. Content analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, was used as a method. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 classroom teachers working in two different primary schools. Teachers who have worked for at least 5 years participated in the study. In the findings of the study, especially the primary school level of music books was found to be sufficient at different grade levels. Turkish books are generally considered partially sufficient. It has been reached by the opinions of the teachers participating in the study that life science books are sufficient at some grade levels but partially sufficient at other levels. Mathematics and science books were found to be insufficient in terms of gaining the values of victory, heroism and independence. The suggestions offered by the teachers in order to improve the achievements were evaluated and sub-themes of quantitative increase, addition to the curriculum, diversification of teaching methods and material development were reached. As a result of the research, suggestions for educators and researchers were presented.

Resumen
This study focuses on the process of paradoxical autonomy and survival in the heroin careers of Mexican American women. We explore how gender roles among Mexican American female heroin users influence the emergence of a paradoxical autonomy. Five key subprocesses of this autonomy were identified from 14 life history narratives: sustaining employment, working the welfare system, illegal activities, emotional aloofness, and loss of family and children. Dependency on drugs did not lead simply to the reproduction of traditional gender dependency but, paradoxically, seemed to contribute to a new type of gender autonomy. This autonomy did not necessarily make the survival less arduous, only more independent from gendered responsibilities associated with men and often with family and children. We discuss how this paradoxical autonomy is not acquired without ambiguity by some of these women, who place a value on maintaining relationships with men and family. Our study makes a contribution to a better understanding of the diverse processes by which Mexican American female heroin users struggle to survive. Although this struggle leads to a paradoxical autonomy from their traditional gender roles, it does little to change other barriers to self-development originating from poverty, ethnic discrimination, and the severity of their drug addiction.

Resumen
Shakespeare’s comedies mark his artistic excellence in the portrayal of woman characters. Shakespearean women have invariably moved the audience and their understanding towards them from being sweet and mawkish to expressing their needs sternly for integrity, justice through wit and intelligence in his plays. Often strongly approved by the modern feminists, the qualities of intelligence and assertiveness are regarded as admirable qualities in Shakespearean comic heroines. As revolutionaries, Shakespearean female characters have always been projected as strong, sometimes stronger than the male counterparts; often going against the conventions of the society to symbolize what gender equality in the future may be like. Essential qualities like intelligence and wit always fulfilled and made Shakespearean heroines independent personalities. The female characters in Shakespeare’s plays always played an important role in the dramatic run in both tragedies and comedies. This article studies the portrayal of intelligence by Portia in The Merchant of Venice making her the hero of the play.

Family history of alcoholism and antisocial behaviour had both independent and synergic negative relationships with abstract verbal reasoning for a group of 42 female polydrug abusers whose main drug was heroin. This finding suggests that the observed lower cognitive performance may reflect the family history of alcoholism or antisocial behaviour rather than just drug abuse and is consistent with theories predicting a relative deficiency in high language skill by persons with antisocial personality disorders.

Resumen

Even after the rise of Indonesian feminist film directors by the likes of Nia Dinata, Mira Lesmana, Mouly Surya, Nan T Achnas and Lola Amaria, the Indonesian moviegoers still flocked into badly written teenage romance dramas. This paper interrogates the way romance and femininities have been shaped within the cinematic representation in London Love Story 2, Promise and Dear Nathan. It is concluded that the Indonesian romance teenage dramas are entrenched with masculine power and dominance spectacles in which the feminine heroines have been treated as passive objects of desire whose agency and subjectivities are being stripped away. Using feminist literature on post-feminist romance cinema, the heroines in these films have mostly been constructed as independent, smart and seemingly agentive at first, but nevertheless pursued romantic, traditional, heterosexual relationships saturated with masculine
control and dominance. This paper shows that post-feminist popular culture has transpired globally and morphed into transnational post-feminism that influenced the production and consumption of such text in Indonesia.

In Polish feature films about the Warsaw Uprising there are no women. They of course appear as nurses, civilians or message runners. But they are always part of the background, seen, but not looking, symbolic in their presence, and never the active heroines; always serving, and never independent or autonomous. If they are the heroines of the drama, then they are part of someone else’s drama, and are not given a voice of their own. Their narratives and accounts of life, even everyday life, are left unsaid, hidden behind grand and epic narratives of the heroes. The article is about women’s “micro-narratives”, the memories of women who lived in Warsaw and participated in the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. The memories give us a chance to see the Uprising in a different light, one that includes the women’s perspective and experience of the Uprising. Women’s accounts, due to their graphic nature and their uniqueness appear to be ready-made but not used film scenarios. [originally published in Polish in Kwartalnik Filmowy 2010, no. 69, pp. 95-120]

Resumen
ObjectiveTo assess the efficacy of slow release oral morphine (SROM) as a treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD).DesignSystematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials (RCTs).Data sourcesThree electronic databases were searched through 1 May 2018: the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE and EMBASE. We also searched the following electronic registers for ongoing trials: ClinicalTrials.gov, WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, Current Controlled Trials and the EU Clinical Trials Register.Eligibility criteria for selecting studiesWe included RCTs of all durations, assessing the effect of SROM on measures of treatment retention, heroin use and craving in adults who met the diagnostic criteria for OUD.Data extraction and synthesisTwo independent reviewers extracted data and assessed risk of bias. Data were pooled using the random-effects model and expressed as risk ratios (RRs) or mean differences with 95% CIs. Heterogeneity was assessed (χ2 statistic) and quantified (I2 statistic) and a sensitivity analysis was undertaken to assess the impact of particular high-risk trials.ResultsAmong 1315 records screened and four studies reviewed, four unique randomised trials met the inclusion criteria (n=471), and compared SROM with methadone. In the meta-analysis, we observed no significant differences between SROM and methadone in improving treatment retention (RR=0.98; 95%CI: 0.94 to 1.02, p=0.34) and heroin use (RR=0.96; 95% CI: 0.61 to 1.52, p=0.86). Craving data was not amenable to meta-analysis. Available data implied no differences in adverse events, heroin, cocaine or benzodiazepine use.ConclusionsMeta-analysis of existing randomised trials suggests SROM may be generally equal to methadone in retaining patients in treatment and reducing heroin use while potentially resulting in less craving. The methodological quality of the included RCTs was low-to-moderate.

Resumen
This study examined the criminogenic effects of terminating the Supplemental Security Income program for drug addiction and alcoholism. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to analyze self-reported crime, economic, and drug-use data collected as part of a two-year multisite study with five interview waves from 1,640 former DA&As. The primary independent variables examined included subjects’ replacement of lost SSI benefits legally or through re qualification under another disability category and their weekly use of heroin and/or cocaine. The study found that failure to replace lost cash benefits resulted in a moderate increase in crime, particularly drug and property crime, that peaked two years after loss of benefits. Heroin and cocaine use were also related to criminality, though the magnitude of this effect was greatest at six months after loss of benefits. The study also found a relationship between drug use and loss of benefits, suggesting that the federal legislation has created a crime-prone residual population of drug users with limited treatment access.

Resumen
Chicklit explains that chick lit genre reflects “the lives of the everyday working young woman” and appeals to readers who “want to see their own lives in all the messy detail, reflected in fiction today”. But some writers and critics describe it as a mere fluff or garbage and wastage of time. This present paper presents the characteristics of chicklit heroines and how their lives reflect the lives of the everyday working women, with the arguments in favour of “CHICK LIT” genre. It’s an important genre which deals with the problems of those women who are caught between the competing demands of feminism and being an independent woman. It is a via media which helps the women. It’s more like an escape, which helps the women too choose. This genre gives them a satisfaction that they are not alone with such and such problem; there are many more like them, to whom they can relate.

Resumen
Abstract. Whereas leadership is generally perceived as a masculine enterprise, heroism research suggests that people view heroes as similarly masculine, but having more feminine traits. We predicted that heroes will be evaluated higher than leaders in communion but not differ in agency. In Study 1, heroes were perceived to have higher communion and similarly high agency as leaders. In Studies 2 and 3, we replicated these trait ratings focusing on perceptions of typical heroes/leaders (S2) and personal heroes/leaders (S3). In Study 4, we showed that the greater level of communion associated with heroes is independent of their gender. In Study 5, using an implicit association test, we showed there is a stronger implicit association of communion with heroes than leaders.

Resumen
The article is a literary (preliminary) attempt to look at the modest literary output of Aurelia Wyleżyńska, a writer and publicist, practically unknown and forgotten. It is also an attempt to discuss her female perspective on the world. The heroines of Wyleżyńska’s novel are strong, independent, courageous, lonely women who want happiness, love, and sometimes a partner. Seemingly weak and submissive, in fact resourceful, progressive, rising above the average, they do not give in to the pressure of the environment and from the most difficult experiences they can draw the knowledge necessary for further development, becoming advocates of change themselves. Wyleżyńska was then an emancipator in the best sense of the word, and at the same time managed to maintain a childlike sensitivity in observing the world.

Resumen
George Orwell’s dystopian masterpiece, Nineteen Eighty-Four is one of the most pervasively influential books of the twentieth century. Many previous researchers have explored its profound themes and cultural implications. Starting from a different perspective, this thesis approaches the story in the light of anti-heroism. By analyzing the image of Big Brother and the protagonist, the anti-heroic spirit shown in the transformations of the protagonist presents the glory of humanity under the pressure of totalitarianism. The suffering of the protagonist especially when he is under arrest shows readers how humanity will be tortured by totalitarianism in a world which is dominated by traditional heroism. Orwell expresses his comprehending of the freedom and concern for the future of mankind and gives his answer about hero and freedom after a close reading. A true hero is not the one who maintains the leadership of the party, but a man with independent thought, identifying the beauty and ugliness. And the right of freedom is the freedom of ideology on the basis of history.

Resumen
The issue of the participation of Polish political emigration in the struggle for freedom and its comprehensive activity in the political, scientific and cultural spheres are reflected in the Polish (European) history, thus providing valuable research material for future generations. Polish post-partition emigres, especially after the major national uprisings, was concentrated mainly in France, England and Belgium. Polish emigration in Belgium, similar to some extent to emigration in France – albeit smaller in number – was constituted by the Polish colony, represented, among others, by soldiers seeking refuge after the November Uprising (including several dozen officers, e.g. Ignacy Kruszewski, Feliks Prot de Pruszyński, Jan Zygmunt Skrzynecki, Władysław Zamoyski) and representatives of culture and science, Joachim Lelewel (an outstanding Polish historian, spiritual guide in an exile democratic camp), Stanisław Worcell (thinker and social activist of the Great Emigration) and many other outstanding Poles. The aim of this article is to present the role of Polish emigration in Belgium, its contribution to the struggle for Poland’s independence, and to draw attention to the scholarly dispute surrounding the Great Emigration between Polish and Belgian historians regarding the effects of “politics in exile” and the question of the heroism of Polish patriots in exile. These considerations are a contribution to a broader discussion and an encouragement to a deeper penetration of the literature (source materials) on the Great Emigration, especially, if it concerns Belgium, available in foreign languages – French and Dutch.
