Resumen

In type 2 diabetes incretin effect (IE) is reduced but still contributes to 20-35% of insulin response to oral glucose. One reason is the impairment of GIP and GLP1 effects. The role of IE in nondiabetic people is still under debate. In this study we evaluated changes in GLP1 levels, differential β-cell responses and IE during oral vs intravenous stimuli in nondiabetic humans before and after pancreatoduodenectomy (PD). We enrolled 37 nondiabetic patients affected by periampullary nonmalignant neoplasms scheduled for PD. Subjects underwent a 2-h hyperglycemic clamp (HC), a 830 kcal mixed meal test (MMT), and an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) before and after PD. GLP1 secretion was calculated during MMT stimulation. β-cell glucose sensitivity (βCGS, pmol·min−1m−2·mM−1) was calculated as the ratio of insulin secretion and glucose increments during both HC and MMT. IE was calculated as the ratio of βCGS obtained during MMT and HC. Based on post-PD OGTT, we divided nondiabetic subjects into 3 groups according to glucose tolerance after PD: normal glucose tolerance (postNGT, n=11), impaired glucose tolerance (postIGT, n=15), or diabetes (postDM, n=11). Before surgery, postIGT subjects exhibited increased GLP1 secretion during MMT compared to the other 2 groups (GLP1 AUC: postIGT 12638±688 vs postNGT 6994±1773 vs postDM 6443±1687 pmol/L·min, P<0.05). Further, a similar βCGS was observed in the 3 groups following HC stimulation (postNGT 95.2±15.5 vs postIGT 64.3±8.72 vs postDM 73.8±11.8, P=0.2), while a scaled reduction in βCGS was observed in postIGT and post-DM following MMT (postNGT 206±50.0 vs postIGT 111±19.9 vs postDM 88.2±8.45, P<0.05). Accordingly, we observed a scaled reduction of IE in postIGT and postDM groups (postNGT 2.35±0.52 vs post-IGT 1.37±0.13 vs post-DM 0.86±0.18, P<0.05). Our data show that GLP1 secretion increases in people at risk of IGT, possibly to compensate reduced IE, which seems to predict DM appearance after β-cell mass reduction. This journal reprints the history of the Elder Dempster company by Peter N. Davies, from 1852-1972, originally published in 1973. It includes an additional chapter, also by Peter Davies, on the history of the company from 1973-1989, covering its decline and final years. The purpose is to describe and analyse the economic history of the Elder Dempster shipping company and its predecessors, and provide an account of West African and British economic backgrounds. The journal is divided into five parts, each concerning a different era in the company’s history. Part 1 covers the formation of the African Steam Ship Company, which would eventually merge and become Elder Dempster; Part 2 covers the expansion of Elder Dempster and the partnership with Alfred Lewis Jones; Part 3 explores major historical events and their impact on Elder Dempster, including the Great War, the transition from war to peace, and the end of the Royal Mail group; Part 4 concerns the establishment of Elder Dempster Lines Limited, the emergence of successful rival companies, the Second World War and post-war reconstruction, and prediction for the company for the 1970s and beyond, as this part concluded the first edition of the history; Part 5 is a retrospective look at the 1970s and 1980s, and tracks the decline of Elder Dempster and the evolution of the Ocean Group.

In its twelfth Postal Sector Report (2021), the Monopolies Commission recommends a "large-scale" amendment to the German Postal Act, which has been in force almost unchanged since 1997. This includes the revision of the pricing principles, the extension of access obligations in mail delivery networks to include the shipment of goods and press, and the expansion of Deutsche Post AG’s obligations to hand over business contracts. In addition, the Commission is examining the role of Amazon in the parcel market. On the one hand, the company stimulates competition; on the other hand, there is a risk that Amazon could leverage its market power as the larest online marketplace operator into the parcel market. Thus, Amazon should be monitored.

This work studies the history of two major Scottish shipbuilding firms based on the River Clyde - Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company and Lithgows Limited. It traces each firm’s origin, success, decline, and collapse, and places the events into the historical context of maritime Britain. The aim is to enhance the academic understanding of the cause and effect of the decline of the British shipbuilding industry, delving beyond the factors of poor industrial relations, international market conditions, and entrepreneurial failure in search of further answers. As a private company, Lithgows Limited provides useful insights into company management outside of state control. The authors base their analysis on the catalogued volumes of Scotts and Lithgows records, though due to the large number of gaps in the data, they also conducted interviews with major players in each company from the post-war period. Public, business, and banking records also provide supplementary material. The book is separated into eight chapters, plus a concluding ninth, an appendix listing ships built by Scott Lithgow Limited between 1970-1987, and a select bibliography.

Chapter 5 deals with the 1990s, a decade when changing market conditions dramatically affected perceptions of public companies and the executives in charge. Pessimism prevalent as the 1990s got underway would dissipate in a few years with the American economy and the stock market both thriving. Public company executives ended the decade riding high in a manner that was unmatched throughout the post–World War II era. Concomitantly, confidence in the efficacy of internal and external constraints affecting public company management grew substantially. Optimism about corporate governance would quickly dissipate, however, when public companies suffered a sharp reversal of fortunes as the 2000s got underway.

The chapter scrutinizes how German and Danish unions are navigating the increasingly integrated slaughterhouse industry, based on a case study of a large Danish multinational slaughterhouse company with operations in both Denmark and Germany. The German slaughterhouse industry is highly affected by increasing fragmentation of production and the widespread use of low-paid workers often posted from Eastern Europe, which the Danish multinational company utilizes to lower its production costs. The Danish slaughterhouse workers’ union was more successful in safeguarding workers’ wage and working conditions and preventing labour market segmentation, while their German peers faced much more precarious work. These differences are explained by the vast differences in the unions’ power resources in the two systems. Danish unions were in a much stronger position in terms of membership, where unionization remains a social custom, with stronger collective agreements and local representation compared with the German union.

This chapter focuses on the Boston Ideal Opera Company, a comic opera troupe. Its founder, Effie Hinckley Ober, was not a performer, but a businesswoman who owned one of the first musical management firms in the country. Her success in a male-dominated business provides valuable insight into how an ambitious and enterprising woman could navigate a distinctly competitive, virile world in the post-Civil War American social landscape. This chapter covers the Boston Ideals only during the Ober period (1879–1885) and illustrates techniques of management, a hitherto unknown relationship between opera production and the emergence of lyceum bureaus, and performance practice. The company mounted both operettas (Gilbert and Sullivan) and some of the standard works that had been performed by English-language troupes for decades; after Ober’s retirement it continued until 1904 under a new name (the Bostonians) and new management.

AbstractThis paper examines the phenomenon of influencers with a special focus on the tourism industry. The question arises whether self-portrayal within a gender-stereotypical framework correlates positively with success and the number of followers. To this end, the profiles of twelve tourism influencers and their posted content in the first half of 2023 were analyzed. With the help of quantitative content analysis, we examined 427 photos of tourism influencers on the Instagram platform. The results show that while female tourism influencers more often present themselves in a sexualized way and focus on themselves and their bodies, male tourism influencers put their competencies in the foreground. In this way, both female and male influencers comply with their expected gender roles – in addition to the body, a presentation of socially expected actions and attributes is also in the foreground. The results are discussed against the background of social sustainability.

Resumen

Independently of the negative economic, social and human effects of the COVID-19 virus, sustainability is an emerging issue. The purpose of sustainability and integrated reporting is to create a holistic approach to performance measurement, bridging financial and non-financial measures based on integrated thinking that covers all the key elements of a business. Publishing these reports is a way for external communication to show a comprehensive picture. In order to prepare a good quality report, companies need to identify their stakeholders, their interests, needs and expectations while also presenting all the relevant information in a concise and structured report. In this paper, we describe the background and development of sustainability/integrated reporting in terms of its regulatory and application environment. We concluded that although there are different interests and approaches, intensifying intensions to form generally accepted and uniform regulations in sustainable reporting are existing and escalating. In this paper, we summarise the practice of companies from some EU countries in sustainability/integrated reporting. In practice, despite the common EU directive, the content, level of detailed presentation and structure of the reports of non-financial information differs from country to country and company to company, which restricts the ability to compare these reports or elements.

Resumen

Abstract ln co-operation with industrial companies, education and training institutes, and universities, an interactive multimedia learn-ing programme was developed. The project was sponsored over three years by the European Community. Structure and contents of this programme are based on the EWF-guideline “European Thermal Sprayer - Minimum requirements for education and training”. The multimedia programme contains the module of theoretical basis of the training course and covers training subjects as spraying processes, base and spray materials, bonding mechanisms, coating characteristics, measuring and testing, environmental and safety aspects. The interactive multimedia programme may be used to shorten the duration of the ETS-course, for spray company internal education and training, for settling into a new job concerning thermal spray technique, or for supporting a training course itself. The multimedia programme will be demonstrated during the poster sessions. Paper text in German.

Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) is a company framework that focuses on environmental, social and corporate governance sustainability. Incorporating ESG into company operations plays a significant role in investment decision-making and can provide a significant advantage over competitors. The challenge is that the ESG does not yet have uniform standards, but several international initiatives have been launched to develop these standards. The European Union's ESG reporting framework is already being developed and is expected to enter into force in 2023. The purpose of reporting is to show how the company fits into its global sustainability goals. The number and depth of ESG topics is significant. The chosen framework will determine which topics are relevant to the company. The aim of our study is to identify and examine financial, economic information and possibilities and methods from which the objectives set out in the Sustainability Report can be verified for both internal and external stakeholders; in this paper we deal with the private sector only. It is important to note that the preparation of a sustainability report will be dataintensive and successful reporting will depend on existing, welldesigned reporting systems.

The main theme of this paper is worker-employer cooperation in occupational health and safety management. This is one of the most topical topics, since the provision of occupational health and safety is key to reducing risks in the workplace. Therefore, questions arise about how to ensure that the health and safety problem in a company or organisation is addressed by the employer and employee working together. Many companies are tackling this issue in different ways, whether through employee motivation, on-the-job training, raising awareness, cooperation, etc. Various research has been conducted on this topic, which has shown the positive results of cooperation in occupational health and safety management. This paper thus deals with the themes of employer-employee interaction, in which mutual communication, risk reduction and prevention are key. The paper then goes on to compare governance in the European Union and Slovenia. Given the situation that forced large numbers of employees to work remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, the subject is also approached from this aspect, how employers can ensure employee safety when working from home. At the end of the paper, some examples are given of how Slovenian and foreign companies are tackling and solving the problem in practice.

Information Technology Service Management (ITSM) can be defined as the implementation, management and provision of quality information technology services that meet the needs of the enterprise to support business goals and customer needs in the area of IT operations. ITSM is an important factor in the success of many organizations and for this reason a large number of norms, standards, frameworks and models have been created (ITIL, COBIT, ISO/IEC 20000, ETOM, TOGAF, MOF and others) through which the company can use best practices and management practices information technology services. The most widely used standard is ITIL, which in its current version is aligned with the digital technologies of the digital era, so that together with consumers they create value, support business strategy and embrace digital transformation. The aim of the scientific article is to map the use of conceptual frameworks, norms and standards in the field of information technology service management. Business entities should use frameworks, standards and norms to be competitive, efficient and more profitable.

Resumen

This paper presents acceleration data of seventy-eight open-wheel, Indy car type, racecar impacts. These data were collected by the “Impact Sensor Program” conducted jointly by the Ford Motor Company and the Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART), Inc. The seventy-eight impacts consisted of forty-two side impacts, thirty rear impacts, three frontal impacts, and three rollover/flipping of cars. Related crash data were used as input to a CAE model of a racecar driver in a typical CART car to perform computer simulations of the impacts. This model was developed using MADYMO software, and was an enhanced version of one previously published. Enhancements to the model included accurate geometrical representations of the cockpit interior, the seat, and the energy-absorbing collar; a more realistic geometry of the driver’s head and an improved representation of the neck; a highly detailed model of the driver’s helmet; and improved contact algorithms to define the head-helmet, helmet-collar, and head-chin strap interactions. Additionally, data collected from twenty-six drivers were used to improve the seating posture of the driver in the model. Results of simulations performed established the validity of the model in predicting the potential injury risk to the drivers in the head and neck areas. Model predictions of injuries based on the “Head Injury Criterion” (HIC), the Injury Assessment Reference Values (IARVs) of upper neck forces and moments, and a biomechanical neck injury predictor compared well with the actual injuries sustained by the drivers. The model predictions of reversible concussions also compared well with results of recent brain injury risk studies. The present study shows that CAE modeling can be effectively used to predict potential injuries to racecar drivers involved in high “G” impacts, and that the model can be used to evaluate countermeasures to improve safety of CART cars.

This paper explores the foundation, concept, benefits and mechanisms for implementing sustainable procurement. To achieve the purpose of this research, the author reviewed the key findings of relevant studies and observed them in the context of the current turbulent global geopolitical, economic, social and environmental circumstances. The author claims that sustainable procurement influences the extent and benefits of sustainability implementation in the whole supply chain. Successfully encouraging suppliers to implement sustainability aspects into their production or service activities/processes accelerates a company’s enforcement of sustainability into the whole supply chain, which triggers positive impacts on its value chain creation. Considering the higher stringency of international regulation on sustainability compliance, the positive impacts of sustainability implementation in procurement and supply chain contribute to a company’s higher global competitiveness. Additionally, sustainable procurement shows a company’s adherence to social responsibility for current global challenges. This research implies that sustainable procurement is a requisite international business strategy

In any industry or organization, personnel training is emphasized with reference to National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) guidelines and other globally accepted guidelines. In spite of many refresher training programs, the pharmaceutical industry still faces significant variations in individual/ team efficiency and productivity. Individuals/teams given the same task, SOPs, environment and materials continue to produce significantly different results reflecting the possibility of operating on different sets of theoretical and practical information, which may stem from differing trainer, training program or training method. This study focused on using a standardized manual for training two teams A and B involved in vaccine production, as a tool to increase employee efficiency, productivity and quality, at a Livestock vaccine manufacturing company, with an objective to shorten the supply chain of vaccines (starting with Newcastle disease vaccine I-2 strain) to improve product quality, availability and affordability up to rural household level and back yard farmers. Baseline data was collected from four pre-training production batches and compared with data collected from three post-training production batches. The results showed that a tailored standardized training was effective in achieving the same level of efficiency, regardless of how late or soon the member joined the facility, and who conducted the training. The process of training staff, using a company tailored standardized manual, was shown to be successful within this company’s set up and could potentially be applied to other industries that are struggling with implementation of uniform information to their staff.

In August 2022, LastPass suffered two cyberattacks that breached customer data and encrypted passwords. LastPass acknowledged the attacks, but their communication was not transparent enough. In November 2022, a follow-up attack compromised customer data further. LastPass communicated that this was a low-risk attack and that customers did not need to take any action. However, in December 2022, LastPass admitted the actual scale of the breach, and that all customer vaults were compromised. It is important to note that every company suffers frequent attacks, but the proper security posture under this type of attack is to assume that everything will eventually get compromised. The incident makes a case for why companies should always deploy additional defenses, such as employing security keys, to stay secure in the long term.

This is the final research report of the "Tech in Churches During Covid-19" research project, a three-year study of churches in Indiana who received funds from the Center for Congregation's Connecting through Technology grant, which focused on the ways technology use during the global pandemic impacted churches experience and outlook. This report presents finding from a survey of 246 church leaders about technological decisions made during the global pandemic. The aim was to better understand churches' engagement with digital media, and compare their practices and attitudes toward technology before, during and after the pandemic. Findings from this report demonstrate a positive shift between 2020 and 2023 in congregational attitudes towards technology and online services. It also highlights how the size of the congregation and the age of religious leaders making technology decisions influenced the type of digital media used and how churches adapted to digital tools.

This paper examines the factors associated with the adoption of cloud computing and artificial intelligence/machine learning, two emerging digital general-purpose technologies (GPT), as well as firms' post-adoption outcomes. To do so we identify adoption of GPT based on references to these technologies in listed company reports, and merge this with data on their Board of Directors, their hiring activities and their financial performance. We find that firms that have directors with relevant technological backgrounds, or female representation on their Board, are more likely to profitably adopt GPT, with the former being particularly important. Worker skills also appear important, with firms that adopt GPT, particularly those that do so profitably, being more likely to hire skilled staff following adoption. Finally, while early adopters of GPT experience a dip in profitability following adoption, this is not evident for more recent adopters. This suggests that GPT may have become easier to adopt over time, potentially due to changes in the technologies or the availability of relevant skills, which is encouraging in terms of future productivity outcomes.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to compare the incidence of post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in opioid-utilizing and opioid-free general anesthesia. Background PONV is an extremely common, potentially dangerous side effect of general anesthesia. PONV is caused by a collection of anesthetic and surgical interventions. Current practice to prevent PONV is to use 1-2 antiemetics during surgery, identify high risk patients and utilize tracheal intubation over laryngeal airways when indicated. Current research suggests minimizing the use of volatile anesthetics and opioids can reduce the incidence of PONV, but this does not reflect current practice. Methods In this scoping review, the MeSH search terms used to collect data were “anesthesia”, “postoperative nausea and vomiting”, “morbidity”, “retrospective studies”, “anesthesia, general”, “analgesics, opioid”, “pain postoperative”, “pain management” and “anesthesia, intravenous”. The Discovery Search engine, AccessMedicine and UpToDate were the search engines used to research this data. Filters were applied to these searches to ensure all the literature was peer-reviewed, full-text and preferably from academic journals. Results Opioid free anesthesia was found to decrease PONV by 69%. PONV incidence was overwhelming decreased with opioid free anesthesia in every study that was reviewed. Implications The future direction of opioid-free anesthesia and PONV prevention are broad topics to discuss, due to the nature of anesthesia. Administration of TIVA, esmolol and ketamine, as well as the decision to withhold opioids, are solely up to the anesthesia provider’s discretion. Increasing research and education in the importance of opioid-free anesthesia to decrease the incidence of PONV will be necessary to ensure anesthesia providers choose this protocol in their practice.

Background Diabetes mellitus (DM) and depression are important comorbid conditions that can lead to more serious health outcomes. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) supports routine screening for depression as part of standard diabetes management. The PHQ2 and PHQ9 questionnaires are good diagnostic screening tools used for major depressive disorders in Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2). This quality improvement study aims to compare the rate of depression screening, treatment, and referral to behavioral health in adult patients with DM2 pre and post-integration of depression screening tools into the electronic health record (EHR). Methods We conducted a retrospective chart review on patients aged 18 years and above with a diagnosis of DM2 and no initial diagnosis of depression or other mental illnesses. Chart reviews included those from 2018 or prior for before integration data and 2020 to present for after integration. Sixty subjects were randomly selected from a pool of 33,695 patients in the clinic with DM2 from the year 2013-2021. Thirty of the patients were prior to the integration of depression screening tools PHQ2 and PHQ9 into the EHR, while the other half were post-integration. The study population ranged from 18-83 years old. Results All subjects (100%) were screened using PHQ2 before integration and after integration. Twenty percent of patients screened had a positive PHQ2 among subjects before integration, while 10% had a positive PHQ2 after integration. Twenty percent of patients were screened with a PHQ9 pre-integration which accounted for 100% of those subjects with a positive PHQ2. However, of the 10% of patients with a positive PHQ2 post-integration, only 6.7 % of subjects were screened, which means not all patients with a positive PHQ2 were adequately screened post-integration. Interestingly, 10% of patients were treated with antidepressants before integration, while none were treated with medications in the post-integration group. There were no referrals made to the behavior team in either group. Conclusion There is no difference between the prevalence of depression screening before or after integration of depression screening tools in the EHR. The study noted that there is a decrease in the treatment using antidepressants after integration. However, other undetermined conditions could have influenced this. Furthermore, not all patients with positive PHQ2 in the after-integration group were screened with PHQ9. The authors are unsure if the integration of the depression screens influenced this change. In both groups, there is no difference between referrals to the behavior team. Implications to Nursing Practice This quality improvement study shows that providers are good at screening their DM2 patients for depression whether the screening tools were incorporated in the EHR or not. However, future studies regarding providers, support staff, and patient convenience relating to accessibility and availability of the tool should be made. Additional issues to consider are documentation reliability, hours of work to scan documents in the chart, risk of documentation getting lost, and the use of paper that requires shredding to comply with privacy.

Under what conditions do countries comply with their fiscal policy rules? We tackle this question in the context of emerging countries, with a specific focus on Latin America and the Caribbean, a region where fiscal rules have become increasingly common in recent decades. Based on an original dataset of compliance behavior across 14 countries observed between 2000 and 2020, we first document that complying with fiscal rules makes a difference: countries that comply with their fiscal rules show, on average, lower sovereign bond spreads, higher credit ratings, and lower probability of public debt acceleration episodes than countries that do not comply with their rules. We then show that compliance is affected by the broader macroeconomic and politico-institutional environment. First, we find an asymmetrical response of compliance to macroeco-nomic conditions: while compliance decreases during bad times, it does not improve during good times. Second, optimistic macroeconomic forecasts undermine compliance during the budget preparation phase: the probability of complying ex-post with the fiscal rule is lower when policymakers overestimate GDP growth ex-ante. Finally, a solid institutional environment supporting commitment to fiscal discipline is a strong predictor of fiscal rule compliance across emerging countries. Our findings contribute to the literature on fiscal rule effectiveness by showing the relevant pre-conditions that may foster or inhibit the successful implementation of rules-based fiscal frameworks.

Review question / Objective: To compare and rank the clinical effects of Non-Pharmacological Therapies for Psychological State of Medical Staff in the Post-epidemic Eradifferent. Eligibility criteria: The published randomized controlled trials (RCT) of non-Pharmacological Therapies for Psychological State of Medical Staff in the Post-epidemic Era, regardless of age and gender. Patients had clear diagnostic criteria to be diagnosed. Interventions in the treatment group included were various types of non-pharmacological therapies, including various types of acupuncture therapies (such as simple acupuncture, electroacupuncture, warm acupuncture, acupuncture catgut embedding, Auricular therapy, or the combination of acupuncture and other Non-Pharmacological Therapies), meditation, Baduanjin, Tai Chi, aerobic exercise, yoga, psychotherapy, music therapy, etc.; the control group was conventional treatment groups or different non-pharmacological therapies compared with each other. The results of the report are required to include at least one of the following outcome indicators: The self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), and effectiveness rate. The language of the publication is limited to Chinese or English.
