Resumen
Parasitic infections caused by Entamoeba histolytica are still major threats against public health, especially in developing countries. Although current therapies exist, the problems associated with parasite resistance and negative side effects make it imperative to search for new therapeutic agents. A systematic scaffold analysis reported herein of a public database containing 474 antiamoebic compounds reveals that benzimidazole is the most active scaffold reported thus far. To gain insights into the antiamoebic activity of novel compounds, the authors report herein the biological activity of 12 compounds, including benzotriazole and indazole derivatives, scaffolds not previously tested against E. histolytica. Compounds with the benzotriazole and indazole scaffolds showed low micromolar activity (IC50 = 0.304 and 0.339 µM) and are more active than metronidazole, which is the drug of choice used for the treatment of amebiosis. The novel compounds have similar properties to approved drugs. Compounds with novel scaffolds represent promising starting points of an optimization program against E. histolytica.

Resumen
In tire tread applications, achieving enhanced abrasion resistance, wet grip, and rolling resistance is crucial for optimizing overall performance. To realize improvements in these attributes for silica-filled tire tread compounds, it becomes imperative to improve the dispersity of silica filler by investigating the effect of each component in the tire tread compound. In this work, we study the effect of styrene content within solution styrene butadiene rubber (SSBR) on the properties of tire tread compounds. A higher styrene segment within SSBR contributes to increased silica dispersion and crosslink density. Thus, tire tread compounds featuring SSBR with increased styrene content not only improve physical and mechanical properties, but also enhance major characteristics tailored for tire tread applications. These findings provide valuable insights into advancing the reinforced performance of tire tread compounds through the strategic utilization of SSBR enriched in styrene content.

Resumen
After defining auxiliary verbs as a grammatical category in Sinitic languages, this chapter sets out to analyze the notion of modality as expressed primarily by the Chinese modal verbs. Beginning with a brief sketch of their diachronic evolution, we proceed to treat this category in each of three major Sinitic languages, namely, Standard Mandarin, Hong Kong Cantonese, and Taiwanese Southern Min (Hokkien). It is shown that the main modal verbs possess different sets of polysemy in each of the three languages. Potential verb compounds are also considered, as well as clause-final modal particles coding speaker stance, both being characteristic of East and Southeast Asian languages in general. Although Sinitic languages do not mark mood inflectionally, an important discussion regarding this category is dedicated to sentence types and the role of negation, intimately connected with the expression of the irrealis, the interrogative and the imperative in Sinitic languages.

Resumen
Bulbar dysfunction typically manifests as speech and swallowing impairment in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Timely assessment of changes in speech and swallowing is imperative, given its negative prognostic implication and impact on psychological well-being. The progressive loss of the ability to speak and swallow can also result in threats to the self-concept, which may compound issues with social interaction. The use of communication devices to accommodate loss of speech appears to be beneficial in reducing patient distress and caregiver burden. Implementation of interventions to manage problems eating secondary to swallowing impairment can also result in marked improvements in patients’ and caregivers’ quality of life. However, the success of these interventions depends on intact cognitive and behavioural functioning, which may be compromised in patients with bulbar dysfunction. Assessment of bulbar dysfunction should therefore be considered in the context of cognitive and behavioural change, to maximize patient and caregiver psychological well-being.

Resumen
Cancer is a widespread disease worldwide. Researchers and scientists have been giving much attention to the drug design and drug discovery of nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S)-based heterocyclic compounds in the last decade. These heteroatoms containing heterocyclic compounds have an imperative role in medicinal chemistry in developing new anticancer drugs. These N and S-based heterocyclic compounds such as pyrrole, quinazoline, thiadiazole, and quinoline are widely used in the rational drug design for anticancer drugs with a favorable therapeutic index. They inhibit the cancerous cells by different mechanisms like inhibiting FGFR, VEGFR, EGFR receptors and inducing apoptosis. They also act as a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma inhibitor, and PI3K inhibitor. This chapter highlights the SAR study of recent literature (2016-2020) in which N and S heterocyclic compounds are present as core structures in molecules. This chapter also emphasizes the benefits of hybrid molecules acting on multiple target mechanisms. In the future, N and S- based heterocyclic compounds will be essential lead compounds for the designing of new anticancer drugs.

Resumen
The surge in immigrant-student populations in schools has disrupted conventional education approaches, presenting both challenges and opportunities. Language barriers, coupled with a dearth of support systems, mentors, financial aid, and health services, hinder the academic and socio-economic growth of these students. Mental health support, crucial for their well-being, faces disproportionate access challenges compounded by cultural stigmas. The cultural assimilation process further compounds the hurdles for immigrant students in American classrooms. Balancing academic rigor, social integration, and reconciling new knowledge with their backgrounds strains their adaptation. Educators' lack of understanding exacerbates these challenges, hindering effective teacher-student connections. This chapter aims not only to delineate the challenges faced by Hispanic-immigrant students but also to highlight overlooked aspects such as mental health support, counseling, and the imperative need for a sense of belonging within educational environments.

Resumen
Viral infections are a major concern for public health systems. The possibility of outbreaks and pandemics can be devastating at a global scale, as seen with the recent coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Therefore, it is imperative to control the spread of viruses, especially highly-virulent strains, for which the administration of vaccines continues to be the best strategy; however, these may be not available for certain viruses, such as the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and herpes simplex virus, or they can quickly lose efficacy towards highly-mutable viruses, such as the influenza virus and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). In such cases, treatments that can attenuate the infection and hamper the multiplication of the virus need to be widely accessible. Drugs are available to treat several virus infections, although they may impose considerable side effects and drug resistance can occur from continuous administration. In this case, alternative treatments should be procured. Polyphenols, alkaloids, terpenoids, and other natural compounds have demonstrated antiviral activity, acting through multiple mechanisms, and showing inhibition of proteins and enzymes that are essential during the life cycle of viruses. This chapter examines recent findings on the antiviral effects of bioactive compounds found in nature, highlighting the characteristics that can make them potential ingredients for the development of antiviral dietary supplements.

Resumen
Out of 30 elements, 16 horticulture crops require them to thrive. All horticultural crops require boron, one of the necessary elements, to function. Extremely trace amounts of boron are present in soils. The majority of the boron that is readily available in humid areas is primarily contained in organic debris, which is broken down by microorganisms for the benefit of plants. In the tropics this element is leached down in soil due to heavy rainfall. As trace element B plays an important role in the growth and development of plants. Various crops exhibit symptoms of deficiency as well as of toxicity when there is even a slight aberration of available boron in soil. Therefore, it is imperative to study and understand the optimum requirement of B by specific crops. Boron also interacts with other elements and manifests in crop plants in various ways. This chapter attempts to understand some of the roles of boron in horticultural crops (fruits and vegetables) and its management for optimum growth and development in crop plants.

Resumen
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a very contagious bacteria that induces devastating illnesses, is a multidrug resistant (MDR) pathogen. The stubborn nature of MRSA biofilms is one of the main reasons for the ineffectiveness of antibiotic treatment against outbreaks brought on by this resistant bacterium, which leads to an increasingly alarming situation globally. Quorum signalling activation and biofilm formation cause infections to become more resistant to antibiotics, making it more difficult to treat bacterial diseases. To overcome this reluctance, it is imperative to support newer therapeutic approaches. Natural substances derived from plants bind to quorum sensing (QS) receptors and interrupt the QS system of microbes by disrupting the production of biofilms and rupturing those that have already formed, hence decreasing the possibility of developing a resistance mechanism. This chapter’s objective is to offer a concise summary of scientific studies on plants and plant-derived compounds with putative anti-QS characteristics against S. aureus.

Texto completo
Resumen
Infections caused by the group of Staphylococcus bacteria are commonly called Staph infections, and over 30 types of Staphylococcal bacteria exist with Staphylococcus aureus causing about 90% of the infections from the genus. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a major cause of both hospital- and community-acquired infections with major concern arising from its strain of species that is resistant to many antibiotics. One of such strain is the Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) that has been described to be a resistance to methicillin drugs. Another is glycopeptides-resistant emerging from the increased use of glycopeptides drugs. This continuous emergence and spread of new resistant strains of S. aureus is a major challenge which makes the search for novel anti-resistant agents imperative. The development of vaccines from natural and synthetic products is some of the measures being proposed for the protection against the infections. Also, the development of monoclonal or polyclonal antibodies for passive immunization is sought for, and attentions with regard to arriving at successful trials have been directed back to medicinal plant research as an alternative. This review discusses the treatment strategies of MRSA, the antibacterial property of various medicinal plants, and the influence of their active compounds on methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), as well as to recommend the path to future research in this area.

Resumen
Chamomile flower, a well-known medicinal plant, possesses significant antioxidant properties attributed to its diverse array of bioactive compounds, including antioxidant proteins. These proteins are vital in combating oxidative stress and neutralizing harmful free radicals. To fully harness the antioxidant potential of chamomile, it is imperative to optimize the extraction methods. This study evaluates the effectiveness of nonconventional mechanical extraction methods using ultrasound to extract antioxidant compounds from chamomile, comparing it with a traditional agitation-based technique. The extracts obtained using green solvents such as basic aqueous solutions or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) showed that while the ultrasound extraction requires a shorted extraction time compared to traditional methods, it yields a more active extract in terms of antioxidant activity. These active constituent-rich extracts were then subjected to thorough characterization and quantification using advanced analytical techniques, such as gel electrophoresis, mass spectrometry, UV-vis, and FTIR spectroscopy. Finally, the antioxidant capacity of the aqueous extract was determined using the DPPH free radical method and the FRAP assay.

Resumen
Abstract Preventing and mitigating corrosion problems can be very challenging due to technical considerations and prohibitive economic implications. It is thus imperative to arrest the escalating corrosion rates and impede the deterioration effects of corrosion with versatile remedies. In this review, previous research efforts on the application of plant-derived polysaccharides as potential inhibitors of metal corrosion in various aggressive media are studied. The deployment of corrosion inhibitors has proven to be an outstanding solution to prolonging the lifespan of metals. However, the most applied inhibitors such as the inorganic and some organic compounds are prohibitively expensive, hazardous, and toxic. These limiting factors have stimulated interest in more research into greener and less toxic natural alternatives. Considering the success of synthetic polymers for corrosion inhibition, a wide range of plants with high natural polysaccharide content have been evaluated to determine their effectiveness as biodegradable, renewable, and more economical corrosion inhibitors. Studies generally show that natural polysaccharides exhibit over 90% efficiency for corrosion inhibition with appreciable adsorption on the metal surface. Modification and grafting of the plant polysaccharides to enhance their inhibition efficiencies and to make them more desirable are currently being investigated. Such bio-inspired polymeric molecules thus have invaluable significance as potential alternatives for the problematic corrosion inhibitors.

Resumen
As petroleum resources are finite, it is imperative to use them wisely in energy conversion applications. Plastics, a petroleum-based product, are widely used in manufacturing disposable products and have created a solid waste issue. Due to their abundant supply, and given their high energy content, their use for power generation is of technological interest. However, whereas waste plastics have found limited use in incineration, such a conventional direct combustion technique is ill-controlled and produces considerable amounts of health-hazardous airborne compounds. Thus, an alternative technology is proposed herein to further address our increasing energy needs and, at the same time, utilize our waste plastics streams in an environmentally-benign manner. More specifically, a multi-step process/device is proposed to accept post-consumer plastics, of various types and shapes, and generate an easily-identifiable form of energy as a final product. To achieve low emissions of products of incomplete combustion, the plastics are liquefied, pyrolyzed, mixed with air, ignited and, finally, burned forming pre-mixed low-emission flames. Combustion is thus indirect, since the solid polymer is not directly burned, instead its gaseous pyrolyzates are burned upon mixing with air. Thereby, combustion is well-controlled and can be complete. A demonstration device has been constructed to convert the internal energy of plastics into clean thermal energy and, eventually to electricity.

Resumen
Suppression of cell movement is an imperative in the effectiveness of future generations of chemotherapeutics. Frizzled 7 receptor (FZD7), as the first protein of Wnt/β-catenin signaling cascade, plays a significant role in regulation of cell differentiation, proliferation, and cell migration. This study aimed to investigate the potential effects of platinum (IV) complex: [PtCl4 (dbu-S, S-eddp)] – C1, and its corresponding ligand – L1 on cell movement, as well as the FZD7 expression and localization after treatments on two human colorectal carcinoma cell lines (HCT-116, SW-480). A Wound healing assay was used to examine cell migration, while FZD7 protein expression was examined by immunofluorescence. Chemical compounds, especially L1, reduced cell motility of both tested cell lines. They showed a particularly good effect on HCT-116 cells, increasing protein expression of the antimigratory marker FZD7 whose localization was observed on the cell membrane of HCT-116 cells. Suppression of cell movement was significantly lower in SW-480 cells after treatments, when compared to HCT-116, with an obvious decrease of FZD7 receptor expression and its localization in the cytoplasm of these cells. Our results indicate that among the examined treatments, the ligand showed more significant results in the suppression of HCT-116 cell movement, most likely through the stimulation of differentiation, which is indicated by the promotion of FZD7 expression.

Resumen
Reducing the amount of carbon dioxide emitted to the atmosphere is a major goal and an imperative need for most of the world’s nations, even for those nations such as the USA who are not Kyoto Treaty signatories. A response by the current USA administration is to develop a national transportation economy for automobiles based upon efficient, environmentally sound fuel cells. However, hydrogen is a secondary fuel requiring a primary energy source for production. Nuclear power (or renewables such as hydroelectric, wind or solar) must be the source of the primary energy required to produce hydrogen from water, if the overall energy system is to be free of carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere. The dissociation of water leaves oxygen as a major byproduct. Currently, there are no existing commercial markets for the large quantities of oxygen that would result from a US transportation economy based upon hydrogen fuel cells. However, Integrated Coal Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plants operating on pure oxygen for both gasification and combustion produce no greenhouse gas releases. This highly desirable feature results from the combustion output being only water and carbon dioxide. Pure CO2 can be relatively easily captured and delivered to a sequestration site. Also, hazardous trace metal compounds (e.g., Hg, As, Pb, Sn, Sb, Se, U, Th, etc.) that would ordinarily be emitted to the atmosphere could be captured as solids, for environmentally acceptable disposal.

Resumen
As petroleum resources are finite, it is imperative to use them wisely in energy conversion applications and look for alternative options as an energy source. Biomass is one of the renewable energy sources that can be used to partially replace fossil fuels. Biomass-based fuels can be produced domestically and may thus reduce dependency on fuel imports. Due to their abundant supply, and given that to an appreciable extent they are considered to be carbon-neutral, their use for power generation is of technological interest. However, whereas biomasses can be directly burned in furnaces, such a conventional direct combustion technique is ill-controlled and typically produces considerable amounts of health-hazardous airborne compounds [1,2]. Thus, an alternative technology is described herein to further address our increasing energy needs and, at the same time, utilize our biomass streams in an environmentally-benign manner. More specifically, a multi-step process/device is outlined to accept biomass, of various types and shapes, and generate an easily-identifiable form of energy as a final product. To achieve low emissions of products of incomplete combustion, the biomass is gasified pyrolyticaly, mixed with air, ignited and, finally, burned in nominally premixed low-emission flames. Combustion is thus indirect, since the biomass is not directly burned, instead its gaseous pyrolyzates are burned upon mixing with air. Thereby, combustion is well-controlled and can be complete. A demonstration device has been constructed to convert the internal energy of plastics into clean thermal energy and, eventually to electricity.

Resumen
Abstract Experimental studies have been augmented by computer modelling and simulations for the development and optimization of future fuels and automotive engines. Traditional reliance on the simplified global reactions for combustion simulations reduces the credibility of the prediction of combustion and engine performance parameters, such as in-cylinder pressure, heat release and pollutant formation. The study of engine performance parameters helps in improving the performance as well as the reduction of emissions in the engines. The present study has used detailed chemistry by augmenting the combustion model of a three-dimensional unsteady compressible turbulent Navier-Stokes solver with liquid spray injection by coupling its fluid mechanics solution with detailed kinetic reactions solved by a commercial chemistry solver. A skeletal reaction mechanism was reduced to study the in-cylinder pressure in a direct injection spark ignition (DISI) engine. Sensitivity analysis was performed to reduce the reaction mechanism for the compression and power strokes utilizing computational singular perturbation (CSP) method. An interface was developed between fluid dynamics and chemical kinetics codes to study iso-octane that is a well-established surrogate fuel for gasoline. Gasoline is a complex mixture of various compounds and hydrocarbons. The study used 90% iso-octane and 10% n-heptane as surrogate fuel because this combination best modelled the results. A mesh independent study was performed at stoichiometric conditions that validated and showed a good agreement of peak in-cylinder pressure against the experimental data for a direct injection spark ignition (DISI) engine. This study has been comprehensive as it includes a detailed study performed for premixed case at ϕ = 0.98 and 1.3 as well as stoichiometric condition in a direct injection spark ignition (DISI) engine, that resulted in the development of a reduced mechanism that has the capability to validate in-cylinder pressure and heat release rate from stoichiometric to rich mixtures for premixed cases in a spark ignition engine. The study concludes that it is imperative to establish a library of reduced mechanisms for various spark ignition engines as well as other combustion systems.

Resumen
Manufacturing process for complex and heterogeneous systems in sub-millimeter scale requires several discontinuous and expensive steps. Batch manufacturing approach via legacy semiconductor processes often do not provide a viable solution for such type of product development due to either their inherent limitations of monolithic and in-plane design or commercial unsuitability in cases of low to medium production volumes. Therefore, alternative approaches, such as microassembly techniques, are warranted for this type of advanced manufacturing requirements. However, lack of standards for design and unavailability of off-the-shelf robotic assembly systems, augmented with scaling of physics in micro-domain, eventually renders the highly iterative approach toward product development cycle cost-inefficient and time-consuming. In ordered to deal with this compounded problem in micromanufacturing, it becomes imperative that a holistic approach be employed that develops not only the product but also the system that is used to construct the same. In our work, we demonstrate this concurrent engineering approach through a novel, analytical framework, called as “Design for Multiscale Manufacturability (DfM2)”. This framework, built into an interactive software application, enables the user to estimate common manufacturability metrics such as process yield, cycle time, overall cost and device performance, which improves the decision making in production and paves the pathway to commercialization by reducing the time and cost to market. Furthermore, we also demonstrate the implementation of the DfM2 application in evaluating the manufacturing of heterogeneous microsystems by a custom developed modular and reconfigurable manufacturing cell (MRMC). A real case-study has been discussed for the implementation of the DfM2.
